UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

The lull begins after recruiting

Well, now what do we do?

National Signing Day has come and gone and, with the exception of a few stragglers here and there, all the drama is done. Georgia is in the hunt for one of the holdouts. Tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, a teammate of the Bulldogs’ quarterback signee Aaron Murray, will supposedly be making his decision in a week or so. Other than than that, the Dogs are done.

By all accounts, Georgia did quite nicely, especially considering it signed a relatively small class (18). Based on the rankings I looked at this morning the Dogs generally were slotted around eighth or ninth in the nation. Take that for it’s worth.

So now, the long vigil begins. There is nearly seven months to go before college football season resumes. I guess there’s spring practice to whet your appetites. Never done much for me, especially this year as something like 16 Georgia players will be sitting out due to injuries.

Regarding this year’s recruiting class, lost in all the late dramatics was all those players that committed to the Bulldogs’ early and stayed true to their word all the way to signing day. A lot of times I don’t think those kinds of guys get enough credit.

So let’s hear your thoughts. Meanwhile, here’s a bunch of mostly-recruiting-related links to chew on. Bon appetite! …

Here’s some recruiting rankings from Tom Lemming and we list the Scout and Rivals rankings HERE… .

By the way, did you catch that Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels broke his silence on the occasion of National Signing Day? …

Here’s the Memphis Commercial Appeal’s take on wide receiver Marlon Brown choosing Georgia… .

SI.com’s Stewart Mandel writes that early playing time is the chief motivation for where kids sign these days… .

Georgia held up well “Reevaluation Rankings” complied by Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News. He ranked teams based on their recruiting rankings each of the last five years and what they got out of those classes. Spoil alert: Dogs are No. 3… .

Speaking of Alabama, did you see that the Crimson Tide’s plans to expand Bryant-Denny Stadium? The project, expected to cost more than $80 million, will take their seating capacity to 101,000. That will, of course, surpass Georgia’s Sanford Stadium as the fifth-largest on-campus stadium… .

Great story in the New York Times about the next nasty trend in football recruiting — agents. At least that’s what I’m calling them.

I noticed the players we did not get, went outside of the SEC. (Except Massie, he went to the West part of the SEC.) We won’t be playing them much.

Bama deserves a better stadium. They are a better program with more fans, more talent, better coaching, and a legacy of championships that will always have them on the map of the college football world. UGA is not on the same level.

Great recruiting class! The commitments sticking are a reflection of the “Bulldog for Life” philosophy CMR has, as well as there ability to identify talent. While sometimes it’s frustrating if we offer a kid then stick with them when there’s another kid we might could use that scholarship on. Prime example is Shun Chapas he got hurt we could have used that scholarship, I figured this kid never makes the field he’s FB we can get a walk on to take that role so why are we sticking with him? Well now look at it, he stepped in for Sutherlin & is a good enough athlete to play the FB/TE/HB hybrid role as well. So I will not question them again on recruiting philosophy or who they go after. However I’m concerned we might be becoming a football factory & not a team. It’s great to have players go on to the NFL BUT we need to be winning championships too! All in all I have to say Marlon Brown made my day yesterday so let’s hope the kid comes in & lived up to the hype like AJ did. You just never know in recruiting see Israel Troupe I thought he was going to make an AJ type of impact but has barley seen the field hopefully he’ll step up next year.

On AL adding seats I’ll go back on my soap box…Damon Evans are you paying attention?!? Stop Talking & get the facilities added &\or upgraded ASAP!

The agent article is scary stuff! Chip once a player is in college doesn’t the NCAA have more control over stuff like that?

I’m THRILLED to have these guys on board! Especially Marlon Brown!! i can’t wait to see the excuses that vol fans will jump in here and say. stuff like-“he’s too slow, he’ll never qualify, we didn’t want him anyways” sounds about right from ut fans. Same song different verse. Nothing is sweeter than taking the top 2 players from that state and listening to the whining from good old rocky flop!!

Alabama>UGA……………You do realize that until this past year, your program has been a DOORMAT for the last ten years or so while Mark Richt at UGA had the best winning percentage in the SEC. You do get a paper over there don’t you ? Yes, Bama is back, but winning runs in cycles. Ya’ll should be pretty good for the 2-3 years until Saban moves on. He loves the money and the attention. I’ll take Coach Richt. He doesn’t have a Bekins Van Line magnet on his fridge !

Congradts for getting the Brown kid. I think he will see early playing time. Joe Cox, you are going to have some great targets this year.

When asked if he would like to comment on how he was going to utilize the stocked recieving corps, Joe Cox said, “I’ll pass.” Leaving reporters in a quandry.

Coach Searles speaks. I thought he was mute.

JB, you said it before I could. When St. Nick goes marching on, he will take the heart out of the pachyderms. After getting beat so bad by Utah, “Utah!” think Jim Mora saying playoffs, you would think that Bama fans would find a little humility, well you would think it anyway.

Alabama>UGA……

Go back to your Wal-Mart book section get a magazine and take it to someone who can read it for you. Since 2001 Bama’s win loss record is 62-40. Georgia’s is 82-22. I think even someone with your lack of intelligence should know how to count. Don’t start writing about the glory days from before you were born. Every program has them, remember that until this year Alabama was one of the doormats of the SEC. I would say in the last 27 years Alabama has been no better than anyone else in fact since Bryant left in 1982 Georgia has won more ball games than Alabama. So get your facts straight before you go running your mouth on the Georgia blog.

The material from Jon Solomon at B’ham news is eye opening. It covers 2004 - 2008 recruiting classes and lists 2008 results. Obviously 2009 results are not complete or included. UGA does rank # 3, interesting is to look at how conferences ranked. OK # 5 with 4 Big 12 titles, Texas # 10 with one Big 12 and BCS. What is interesting is the next ranked Big 12 teams are Nebraska @ 15 and Texas A&M at # 16. Same is true in PAC 10 USC is # 1, 5 PAC-10 titles and 1 BCS, yet next best PAC 10 team is California @ # 16. ACCC ahs 3 in top 20. SEC has 6 of top 13 evenly split between East and West. Sure helps to be the “Big One” in your conference, feed off bottom and get to BCS. The mark of success in business is consistency, UGA’s average for the prior 5 years is a 7.2 ranking and so far this years class is #8, my thoughts are if UGA can continue on this pace we will win a BCS championship (VD won one in over 20 years as coach), have good teams to cheer each fall, be respected for recruiting good men and allowing them to earn an outstanding education.

I guess having Tenn,Florida,SC,Auburn,Rotating LSU,Alabama, playing out of conference teams such as Oklahoma St,Arizona St,Colorado, future games scheduled with Oregon, Louisville and Clemson gives off playing an easy schedule (oh by the way learn how to spell dumb arse) then I would hate to see how easy your teams year to year schedules are.

Chip, Thank you, Tim Tucker and Michael Carvell for your collective diligent effort and up to the minute tidbits. As a wrap I agree that not much has been spoken of how early this group committed and stayed committed to UGA. Speaks volumes of the efforts of the Coaching staff and their focus on kids of high character. When you look at the makeup of this class I am impressed with the following: UGA inks TWO Elite 11 QB’s! hAS This ever been done before by another D1 school? If USC, ND or UF had done this the national scribes would have been all over it. UGA signed the #1 QB recruit in FL!!! UGA signed the TWO best prospects in TN!!! UGA Signed the best DL in IN!!! UGA signed the best TE in the northeast! UGA got on Jordan Love early and he stayed committed even though UF and others tried hard to sway him. UGA signed the best DL in the state and who mysteriously went from 5 stars to 4 stars?! all the while competing at the highest level in GA HS football. UGA got a sleeper in Derrick Lott whom once UGA offered got slammed with offers from UF among others. UGA showed that the UGA Brand is highly visible outside GA and well accepted by recruits across the country. This was not the best year for top HS talent in GA (still good but not quite as deep) and for the Coaches to go outside the borders and score some coups speaks volumes of where UGA is on the national radar. Once again congrats to the UGA Coaches and particularly the new UGA Dawgs who stayed true to their word!!!!

I think we landed an outstanding class, its rich in quality over quantity which is very important, and probably the lack of quantity dropped our recruiting ranking which is one major flaw of the recruiting ranking system that have been used by rivals and scout. On this regard USC should be #1.

When will the docile Georgia fans start asking that Richt get his guys at least in the conversation for a NC. None of the real SEC schools would put up with this recruiting and lack of comparative success on the field. Is it coaching. Has the emperor no clothes except on recruiting day. i actually thank that the UGA fans have a little perspective- the folks at Alabama think they should win every year. Same at Florida (not good exaple they do win and Georgia will be behind them most years. Still the Georgia program is solid and it is good that the fans are so patient but it may run out. I wonder what will happen if they lose 2 or 3 in a row to Tech. Could happen. I know that at least for this next year that GT will be on their mind every day. That is their season next year. Should be intersting.

By the looks of some of these recruits they really need to hit the weight room yesterday. UGA has proved once again that it will be a distant 3rd or 4th place team in the SEC. UGA has now wasted talent for 5 years in a row. Well I guess we cant wait for more uninspired play at the spring game in a couple of months. Then its time for arrests to start cranking up again during the summer months.

The basketball program at UGA should be done away with ,its a total embarrassment. Heck even the cellar dweller Clemson basketball program has come alive in the ACC by totally annihilating # 2 Duke last night by almost 30 points. Well maybe UGA can do something in Golf,GYM,Tennis or underwater basket weaving.

3-4 defense?

I can’t help thinking that using the 3-4 defense might be something for Martinez to consider this year.

Unless C. Washington or some of the other young DE’s look like world beaters… it appears we won’t have dominant pass rushing D ends.

We do however, have two prototypical nosegards in Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins. D tackles such as Kade Weston and Corvey Irvin.

There would be a lot of competition for the “ONE” Defenseive End Spot and we seem to have plenty of linebackers to line up four playmakers.

I’m thinking if the front three can asborb the Offensive lineman from getting to the second level which is critical in the 3-4 it would allow Currie, Dewberry, Washington, and Charles White to make a lot of tackles.

We just seem to be better suited personnel wise to a 3-4 this year and last year as well.

By I-DOG

February 5, 2009 10:16 PM | Link to this

Actually,

Kiante Tripp having moved to defense would probably compete with a few others for the DE spot along with Brandon Wood and Jarius Wynn

In the 3-4, I believe, that the DE’s are usually bigger players who can hold the point of attack against the run but also get after the qb against the pass.

Does anybody know what’s happening with Jawanza Starling? According to Scout.com he still hasn’t signed his letter of intent. USC has already signed a CB and 3 other safeties. Jawanza would make 4. Four safeties doesn’t make sense.

Florida did not sign any rated #1 but signed three players rated #2 and had four #1’s to consider them.
