UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Georgia gets off to slow start, but expecting fast finish
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia will find out today whether its gamble for the some of the nation’s top prospects has paid off.
The Bulldogs started off recruiting as if they were going to finish with the country’s No. 1 class. Georgia was gangbusters through the summer, securing a top 10 class, and giving the Bulldogs the confidence to target some of the nation’s top prospects at their respective positions with the few remaining scholarships: wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis, safety Jawanza Starling of Tallahassee, Fla., offensive lineman Bobby Massie of Hargrave, Va., defensive tackle Kwame Geathers of Carver’s Bay, S.C., and tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, Fla.
Was it the right move for the Bulldogs? Should they have gambled so much on out-of-state guys? Or should they have focused more on state players? They could’ve easily had Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill (signed with Georgia Tech), Dacula’s Cameron Kenney (committed to Oklahoma), and Walton’s David Paulsen (committed to Oklahoma State) had the Bulldogs offered them earlier.
About 50-60 fans are gathered in the Butts-Mehre Building (UGA’s athletic department) to watch the festivities. The crowd was hushed as word spread that Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill had decided to sign with Georgia Tech rather than Georgia this morning.

Georgia recruits the same way every year. Should Texas also try and get guys who won’t commit until NSD? The headline sounds a bit negative but I guess it hit your intended mark - it got my attention.

Michael, don’t know how long you have lived in the area, but under Richt Georgia always closes with a whimper. This staff can’t close a door on signing day, and it’s shown already with the decisions by Reid, Hill, Massie, Jarvis Jones, etc. No coffee for this group, coffee is for closers.

Big news for Georgia. Wide receiver Rantavious Wooten of Belle Glade, Fla., who many Georgia fans were not going to celebrate until his letter arrived on signing day, is officially a member of the Bulldogs.

Ha ha…what a bunch of fruitcakes over there in Athens. Maybe another top 10 recruiting class that will go by the wayside when you lose four games next year, give up 40+ points in five games, and get knocked off by someone like a Vandy or SCarolina. LOL.

This is not looking that good for Georgia in terms of getting more blue chippers added to this class. Losing Reid yesterday really hurt, but I think we just have to coach up who we have recruited the last two years and start trying to get guys next year.

If there was a commitment that Georgia fans worried about losing on signing day, it was wide receiver Rantavious Wooten of Belle Glades, Fla.
Wooten had switched from LSU to Georgia, and was heavily pursued down the stretch by the national champion Florida Gators. Wooten kept a very low profile, saying very little publicly, which only fueled speculation that he could bail out on the Bulldogs.
This was a minor victory for Georgia, which was disappointed after Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill signed with Georgia Tech this morning after some last-minute flirting with UGA.

Hill was a last minute shot in the dark. UGA only made any effort with him the last couple of days. The fact he seriously considered UGA after Yech threw the world at him for months shows how unsatisfied he is with his commitment to the trade school on North Ave.

Rantavious Wooten is a HUGE get. Wow. Another very very nice receiver on the outside to pair with Green. Greg Reid stayed close to home in a place where he can play right away and his family can come watch more easily. Good for him and good luck to him.

Euharlee, if we get Charles, Geathers and Brown, I will dance for joy. That would be an awesome close out for the Dawgs. Heck getting just one of those three would be an acceptable finish, and it looks very good for Geathers.
Hill was a total shot in the dark, and Ried was a no brainer for him to stay close to home and someplace where he will probably start as a Freshman.

An article about Brow last night on Vols extra made me think the kid might shock the world by “staying home” & going to Ole Miss. Then today we hear rumors its Ohio State so who knows. Based on that article the QB situation at each school played into decision so if wants to catch the ball Ole Miss a lot of sense. Then again all of UGA’s QB’s were top recruits, Richt & Bobo have shown they can develop them, the team is young & in the SEC East. He wasn’t real sure about the Big 10, playing in the cold & Terrell Pryor needs to devlope his passing skills in a hurry if they want to throw the ball. All that led me to think was its down to us & Ole Miss Garner has built the relationship with him so my thought was he’ll be a Dawg or shock the world, which this OSU thing threw me off but not going to believe anything until the kid signs! GO DAWGS!

DAWGfan - Tech’s class isn’t even close to Georgia’s in overall talent, but Johnson did do an excellent job in getting athletes that will fit well in his system. I am excited about the competition Tech will give the Dawgs on the field in the coming years, it will be nice to anticipate a challenge and a great game instead of the annual Dawg dominance we have enjoyed for so long. A powerful Tech is better for Georgia than the Reggie Ball joke fest of the Chan Gailety years.
As for the upcoming season - it is all on Joe Cox’s shoulders. If he steps up we could see him lead us much like DJ stepped up. If he struggles or gets hurt, then it will be much like 2006 as Murray or Metzenberger go through the growing pains of a Frosh QB in the SEC.

As I predicted weeks ago, Reid to FSU.
Charles will join him.
Brown will go to ut.
Massie to bama or ole’miss.
Jones to fla.
Starling to fsu.
Geathers will sign with UGA but will not qualify.
An exciting signing day is not Caoch Richt’s game as evidenced by the biggest suprise being the signing of a player whom was already commited.
It will still be a Top 10 class, just no suprises.

We don’t want them unless their heart bleeds red and black. These are just high school kids who have yet to make a block, catch, run, tackle or throw in the SEC or ACC or any other major conference. A top recruiting class is determined by their record in 4 years. We will only know then how well we did today.

I was looking at some of our players from past years on rivals and some of our best players have been 3 and 4 star recruits. 5 star recruits are great, but I would take a 3 or 4 star recruit that was hungry to learn anyday than a 5 star recruit who felt a sense of entitlement. We have a great class coming in. I’m especially excited about Rontavious Wooten. I had been hearing about him for a while and then he seemed to kinda drop off the radar. Glad he’s a Bulldog. Joe Cox will have some great receivers next year. Thanks for the updates, MC.

I am amazed at the Maggott fans that come on here talking $—T. They win 1 out of 7 games, never mor ethan 2 in any decade, they can’t even win the lesser ACC who never wins their BCS bowl, Tech hasn’t ever played in a BCS Bowl, they barely beat a down and injured Georgia team (and they should get credit because it was PJs first year), they get pounded by LSU who GA beat bad…..and they come on a GA blog talking trash. That would be like GA fans talking trash to UF…..what a joke. At least when GA wins over Florida it has been twice in the last couple of years and we win the SEC. That is why Tech will always suck. The inferiority complex is so large even Freud couldn’t figure it out.

The thing I like about Wooten is his speed and the fact that he made his decision and said I am done after he thought about the mistake of digning with LSU, he finally realized that Georgia was the right choice. I think this guy is going to be an instant help for us even though he is a bit smallish right now, his speen reminds me of Percy Harvin. Any news on Jarvis Jones? I think we could really use Orson Charles and I would imagine Murray made some late night and early morning phone calls to him.
As for Marlon Brown, hopefully that will be the icing on the cake if he signs.
Down here in Valdosta, I know Reid was a hope, but with the grades he supposedly had, FSU was a little easier to get into and he will be close to home. Truthfully, I don’t think Georgia needed him with Branden Smith on the team. It would have been nice, but, oh well.
If we have anything going for us, is that fact that we make tight ends and defensive players rich in the NFL. Geathers and Charles know that and I hope they weigh it out heavily.

We really need help on that defense and there is NO reason why Steve Spurrier should be able to bring his a* in GA and get some of these top-notch D lineman and Linebackers. However I do like who we did end up sighning. I just wish we had more becasue it seems we can’t keep anyone healthy anymore.

Anybody else believe we may have seen our best days for a while?!! Florida just reloads. Alabama is back. South Carolina gives us fits and is getting stronger. LSU is solid and getting better. We were beat by a Tech team that looks to get better and better under Johnson. And we lose two prized recruits(Reid and Hill) to ACC schools(FSU and Tech). And we lost others to other schools.. Looks like in the eyes of recruits we’ve lost some of our luster. Don’t get me wrong we should win 8 or so a year but I see us more like Tennessee has been than Texas or Southern Cal.

gametime don’t sound like a gt whiner…uga is reloading as well plus we have a really talented off line that got big time experience last year. coach richt will have those guys playing a for nc very soon maybe even next year when we beat fla. i have no worries what so ever that this team will win 10 games next year and even give fla a run for its money. uga will have some key players on defense that missed out last year that will put pressure on tebow and other teams for that matter that we missed this year. that will make or secondary better as well. uga is still top 2 or 3 in the sec with a a good shot at 1 when we knock of the gators. it wont be easy but it never is in the sec that is why i love this conference. i think our best days are ahead of us with the players we have and the coaching staff with mark richt. no doubt we will have that nc title soon. so hang in there gametime and enjoy the ride..im not worried or afraid that we have seen better days.

This is all fun, but the truth is that until these recruits, the coaches and current players elevate the level of their game, we will be good but always looking up to the Trojans, Sooners, and Gators of the NCAA. It’s just like the PGA. The top 25 are all good, but they are all chasing Tiger, Phil, and VJ, who have learned what it takes to be the best. Total committment, hard work, and discipline. Go lacking in any of these, and you’re toast.

I love the recruiting strategy. We locked up a great class early and that allowed us to pursue national talent. It puts on on the national map, and that’s worth it even if we whiff on all of them. We should aim to be classed among the nation’s best programs for student athletes, because we are. We have great resources and we excel at nurturing these kids not only as athletes but as people.
The only drawback to this strategy is that signing day could be an emotional letdown. But no one will care come the fall. We’ve still got great talent coming in so there’s nothing to hang our heads about.

Shane-
Thanks for the luck on the “gimmick” offense. And the best way to go after a team is talk about how ANOTHER team (LSU) beat them instead of yourselves.
Just remember…the “gimmick” high school offense put up over 400 yards rushing on the poodles. Looks like a bunch of fat pigs wading in the mud on that UGAG defense.

Here are my final projections for the top five uncommitted prospects in the Southeast. Again, these are projections (extremely educated guesses, really) and anything can happen on National Signing Day.
Dre Kirkpatrick (Gadsden, Ala./Gadsden)- Alabama. Texas got in the mix, but it’s hard to see Kirkpatrick heading anywhere but Tuscaloosa.
Rueben Randle (Bastrop, La./Bastrop)- LSU. The Tigers simply don’t let players of this magnitude out of their state. It would be a major upset if he leaves.
Greg Reid (Valdosta, Ga./Lowndes)- Florida State. The Seminoles did a great job building a relationship with Reid in a short amount of time.
Marlon Brown (Memphis, Tenn./Harding Academy)- Georgia. Imagine how nasty the Bulldogs’ receiving corps will be if Brown develops like we thing and A.J. Green continues to shine? This is a major upset as Tennessee was thought to be in the driver’s seat.
Sam Montgomery (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood)- North Carolina. Montgomery remains a projection for the Tar Heels as he has been for weeks. It’s really been UNC and LSU for some time.

Dear RYAN, if UGA counted MNC’s like Tech does, then UGA would have more MNC’s than Tech. Numbers can be made to say what you want.
1980 (12-0-0) - Vince Dooley coached the Bulldogs to a perfect 12-0 season, including a 17-10 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to win the National Championship. Georgia finished as the only team with no losses and no ties and was declared No. 1 by almost every poll.
1968 (8-1-2) - Litkenhous 1966 (10-1-0) - Massey Ratings 1946 (11-0-0) - Williamson System 1942 (11-1-0) - Berryman; DeVold; Houlgate System; Litkenhous; Poling System; Williamson System. 1927 (9-1-0) - Boand System; Poling System

The idiots from other schools on here are just sad.
Just as sad are the dawg fans that are putting too much weight into the players on the board today. We already have a great class. Getting any one of these guys would just be icing on the cake. And IMO it’s no fault of the coaches. Reid wanted to play close to home. Jones wanted to play as far away as possible. No surprise, we’ve known these things for a while.

Is it just me or does rivals.com always downplay Georgia recruits while scout.com gives more generous rankings. According to Scout, we got several 5 star players. According to Rivals, we only got one. How can they be so different?
By Atlanta Gator
February 5, 2009 8:06 AM | Link to this
Charlotte Dawg——Rivals.com does not “downplay” UGA recruits. Rivals uses a different matehmatical scale than Scout.com does. Rivals rates fewer prospects as five-stars overall, and awards fewer points for each individual 4 or 5-star recruit in comparison to Scout. Those individual player rating points, when all the recruits for each school are added up, are what determines the school’s “team ranking.” You will note that Scout and Rivals have UGA’s 2009 recruiting class ranked 8th and 9th respectively. Different mathematical methodology, but with more or less the same results for UGA.
Other schools have a wider variation in their team recruting ranking than UGA. Notably Florida is ranked 10th by Rivals and 21st by Scout. Either way, the Gators aren’t whining. Sure, a couple of 4-stars got away on signing day, but the small class of 16 players still has among the 2 or 3 highest average player ratings in both major rating services. As I am sure you know, all things being equal, bigger classes with more recruits garner more individual player points, and receive a higher team rank as a result.
