UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Green finds fuel for ‘09
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Chatter:
— After a recent workout in the Butts-Mehre building, A.J. Green admitted to disappointment about falling short of 1,000 receiving yards in his freshman season. “That’s my focus,” he said. “That’s what’s driving me right now — how short I came of that 1,000 yards. It pushes me to work even harder.” You’ll recall that a 1,000-yard season was well within reach for Green entering the Capital One Bowl. But Michigan State’s defensive strategy shut down Green and Mohamed Massaquoi and opened up a big day for Michael Moore. Green caught just one pass for 12 yards, finishing the season with 963 yards.
— Green, by the way, said the strained groin muscle that bothered him all season continues to be an issue. “Still rehabbing and trying to get it right,” he said. “I’m not going to rush it.” No surgery is contemplated — just rest and rehab, he said. He’s not sure about his status for spring practice. But having led the SEC in receiving yardage despite the season-long injury, he seems excited at the thought of a healthy sophomore season. “I’m going to have to show the fans [what I can do] when I’m 100 percent.”
— Green added that he talks to Massaquoi almost every day and that Massaquoi, who sprained an ankle during Senior Bowl workouts last week, will be back to 100 percent soon. “He’ll be good to go for the [NFL] combine.”
— NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock ranks prospects by position for the April draft. He has Matthew Stafford ahead of Mark Sanchez as the No. 1 quarterback, Knowshon Moreno as the No. 2 running back (behind Chris “Beanie” Wells), Brannan Southerland as the No. 3 fullback, Dannell Ellerbe as the No. 4 inside linebacker, and Asher Allen not among the top five cornerbacks.
— And defensive tackle Geno Atkins was in action over the weekend — in his other sport. He won the shot put for the Georgia track and field team at the Carle/Health Alliance Classic in Champaign, Ill., with a sesaon-best effort of 55-6.50.

No matter what time of the year, what the conversation, or whether it concerns them or not, Gator fans just have to be a*****.

I hope he stays awhile…Looks like we are having trouble getting a Big Time WR to commit this year……I think we have one. I don’t think this Tech guy will come to us, although I’m sure our coach’s told him Tech throws it 120 times a season and we throw it over 400.

Wow. That’s almost scary. Can’t wait to see him back again next year. I hope we can keep him around for a while. Thanks for the updates.

Can you guys beleive it…….Chris—Beanie—Wells is rated ahead of Knowshon by some observers. Knowshon has been more productive for his team, played in a much more stingy conference, and time and time again proven to show the fearlessness and passion to play the game like no other. Knowshon’s HEART is what, by estimation, places him in an elite class of exceptional people and athletes.
But if i was a pro scout, the one thing that would really set the two apart is their running styles. Bennie wells, despite his size, can’t run between the tackles as effectively as some of his long highlight runs would suggest. What makes him a special back his ability with his size and speed to allude defenders in open space. But when there is no hole to hit, Beanie has proven to be a marginal tailback.
Conversely, Knowshon, with his unique running ability that demonstrates his superior agility and balance manages to turn two yard losses into two yard gains; he’s shown that when he hits the hole, he will fight for those extra yards. Additionally, his agility and balance, we’ve seen, have worked to eliminate those extra hits that could have inflicted serious injury.
My conclusion: Knowshon is a better everydown back, particularity in pro-style system. And i would wager to say that pro scouts see the dramatic difference between these backs, and place Knowshon miles ahead of Wells. In reality, the real debate should be if the back from pitt, lesean mccoy, is rated higher than wells.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK..??..??

…Knowshon was an idiot when, on the first play of the UF game, he tiptoed up to the line and stopped, thus allowing Spikes to plant him and then hover over him! That set the freakin’ tone for the entire day and really hurt the team psychologically! If not for that one play I would say he is a great back, yet whenever you tiptoe, especially in big games, you lose points!

Thanks for the nice article Tim. I would hope Green takes the spring off to rest that injury. Per JB’s comments I actually think the Tech commit, Hill will sign with the Dawgs. CMR and company are good folks and Hill will see that.
Go Dawgs!

Personally, my fuel wouldn’t be personal stats. It would be the losses that my team suffered the season before.

You see chumps, this is your typical georgie player mentality. He’s disappointed about coming up 37 yards short of 1,000 instead of the way his preseason ranked #1 TEAM stunk it up on the field. This is why georgie continues to disappoint you trailer park fans.
They’re NOT TEAM PLAYERS!! All they care about is showboating in college (ala knowshow, fatford) and bolting to the NFL. They could care less about you toothless idiots.
How does that yearly butt raping with sandy vaseline feel to you mutt fans??
NO NATL CHAMPS!! NO SEC CHAMPS!! NO STATE CHAMPS!! 45-42!! THWG!! and NO STEPHEN HILL!!

I could be wrong, but it looks to me that Green was “asked” about not getting 1,000 yards so he responded to that question. I’m sure if they asked him about the team, he would have discussed disappointment in failing to win the SEC and NC.

Doggie girl, the truth hurts doesn’t it. You see, when you sign up for being associated with georgie, you forfeit being treated with class. Feel pregnant. We don’t treat other programs this way, just you.

Everyone “steals” recruits. No big deal. Just look at how many kids have decommitted this year. This includes Stephen Hill, who’s going to GT, but was committed to Central Florida. UGA made a late offer b/c they need a WR and have a couple more spots open now. Nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately for UGA, Hill is sticking with GT and that’s ok too. He’ll get a great education for free.

Barring injury or some foolish off-field choices, Green is going to be a megastar the next 2 seasons. For this off-season, he needs to keep mastering the WR routes, plays, blocking & add some more bulk/strength (while maintaining his speed). I think Durham & Moore will be solid go-to 2nd & 3rd WRs (respectively). With his 6’5 frame & solid hands, Durham could be viable threat as the #2 WR (he needs to add some muscle in the offseason though).
Stafford should definitely be the #1 QB, as he has a much stronger arm than Sanchez & can read defenses better. Stafford has more talent/potential (better arm) than Bradford as well.
Moreno is a better TB/prospect than Ringer or Wells.
A 100% healthy Southerland would be the #1 FB prospect. He led the team in TDs + scoring a few season ago, runs a 4.6/40 & squats 750+. He was grossly underutilized the last 2 seasons, and is an under-rated athlete. Hopefully, he’ll post impressive #s at the Combine & climb up the draft boards.

” WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK..??..?? ” I think every blogger on here has had way way too much of the koolaid. Way way way too much. Knowshon is no where near Wells. Not in speed, hands, blocking, not in anything. Just like I told your sorry asses last August when the Dogs were a joke at number 1, I am telling you now that Knowshon will not got in round one and maybe not in round two. You heard it hear first….from……THE…..OHIO…..STATE…..BUCKEYE.
I’d bet Go Gators trailer on it.

You here this Orson Charles, and Marlon Brown, a chance to play by a true receiver, only Julio Jones can match-up when it comes to sophmores, you better come to UGA, and learn how to get that money, from a future first rounder.

These post continue to show UGA fans are the most obnoxious fans in the country. 8 months of UGA whining and being declared: “Preseason 2008 BCS National Champions” instead of letting the play on the field do the talking like the Gators did and came away with the: Postseason “2008 BCS National Championship”! I hope the dogs win, with their whining, their second “Preseason 2009 BCS National Championship”!

I guess Im a little late getting in on this but you have got to be kidding me saying that Wells is a better blocker than Knowshon. All Knowshon talked about his first two seasons was getting better at blocking. Ok so your a Buckeyes fan so you probably watched them most of the season and Im a UGA fan so I watched UGA. However, Im also a football coach and I like to watch every detail of a film over and over again. Knowshon is the best blocker pound for pound that I’ve ever seen. He hit guys so hard when he punch blocked them that he would knock the other guy and himself out of the game. Tell me Beanies hit guys so hard he knocked them and himself out the game. Im just saying…. Knowshon blocks just as hard as he runs, and thats really hard man.

I also just wanna say that Ive watched a lot of the Gators games since I was in H.S. and have known Gator fans over the years and it really seems to me that they are pretty much the most snobby, spoiled, unjustifiably arrogant douches of all fans in all sports. Im a down to earth guy and Im not saying all of them are like this but the ratio of fans to douches is definitely way higher with the Gators. Now this really only applies to football. I really like Donovan as a BB coach and their program is very good. The football program is also great right now and because of that the people who happen to cheer for them think they are so much better than everybody else but they themselves dont play on the team and would probably get their butts handed to them on the street by a lot of UGA, ALA, USC, FSU, MIA fans including myself. Ive won championships personally as a player (not at UGA) and have never used that to inflate my ego. Now of course I am biased to UGA, but most of the fans that I know are good down to earth people that dont act all superior over the fans of other teams, yes even tech. I just dont see why a fan of a team that is better than everyone elses thinks that he/she is better than everyone else because of that team. Or maybe UF just attracts the type of person that just thinks they are better than everybody else=douche
