UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Evans, Martinez, Moreno, etc.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Been a busy week so far gathering information for this story and that one. So it’s time to empty out the notebook of some things that are piling up.
— Damon Evans is not saying much these days with regard to men’s basketball coach Dennis Felton other than “there’s still a lot of games to be played” and “we’ll see how it turns out.” But in a brief conversation I had with him this week it is clear he is very passionate about having a winning basketball program at Georgia.
“We want to do better,” he told me. “Basketball is important to this institution, to our overall athletics program. It’s something we’re going to continue to work on and build on and support. I want our fans to be excited about basketball and I want them to come out and support us.”
Wonder what the crowd will be like for Mississippi State on Saturday? …
— Funny story (at least to me). I’m sure you all realize that, with Willie Martinez’s name coming up for the Miami job, I’ve been trying to get him on the phone the last couple of days for a comment and to see if they’ve made contact with him. So multiple voice and text messages later, I’m in the Butts-Mehre Building on Wednesday when I see Martinez going down one of the the glass elevators. After I give him a polite wave and he returns it, I hold my thumb and pinky to my ear and mouth like I’m holding a phone so to communicate, “please call.” As Willie’s bald head disappears into the floors below he moves his head from side-to-side slowly but emphatically as if answer, “no way, dude.” I laughed. I’m fairly certain I saw Willie smile… .
— Not sure if I mentioned this anywhere else but I find it interesting that, while Matthew Stafford of Dallas is training for the combine out in Tempe, Ariz., Knowshon Moreno of Belford, N.J., is training in Dallas. Moreno is working out at the relatively new Michael Johnson Performance Training Center. Seems like a good idea to me. You’ll recall that Johnson was the world’s fastest man in the 200- and 400-meters in the 1990s. Seems like the only real question dogging Moreno is his top-end speed. Bet they can help with that… .
— Speaking of fast people, looks like the Bulldogs’ track team has a young burner. Freshman sprinter Torrin Lawrence of Jacksonville, Fla., was named the SEC Male Runner of the Week after smashing UGA’s indoor record and automatically qualifying for the NCAA championships in the 200-meter dash last Saturday in Kentucky. Lawrence clocked the nation’s fastest time this season — 20.77 — to win and break the former school record by .28. He also recorded the third-best 60-meter time (6.75) and was part of the 4x400 relay team that clocked an all-time, top 10 the same day. Oh, yeah, it was his first collegiate meet… .
Couple o’ links:
I’m not sure how cool it is to float your name for a job that isn’t yet open but distinguished journalist Richard Hyatt of Columbus writes that recently-ousted Toronto Raptors coach Sam Mitchell of Columbus is interested in coaching the Georgia Bulldogs… .
Apparently Oklahoma State has deemed Georgia one of its “premium games” so there will be no single-game tickets sold for it. That means beyond UGA’s allotment you can only get a ticket by buying a season package. Of course Georgia fans were more than happy to lay down $99 to $129 for Arizona State season tickets last year. I’m eager to see if as many Dogs fans will go to Stillwater as went to Tempe… .

Chip
I think the Dawg fans will show up in Stillwater, only thing is students won’t be in school yet but i still think we’ll be represented well. I also think Willie’s playing with you on the Miami job. Why would he leave Athens?
Chip i know it has nothing to do with your topic, i was wondering about Kiante Tripp, after mid-season he very rarely saw playing time after being used on both sides of the ball. Saw him make some great blocks at RT and just wondered after being moved to defence and then to Tightend he seemed to get lost in the shuffle. Just seems like too good a player to not have on the field, could you find out his status? Thanks?
As for the hoop hounds, what can you say, winning sells tickets and winning starts in hoops with defence. No defence- no wins!!

There is no ‘C’ in defense (or offense). “Defence” is that thing you put up around your yard. Not really digging at you, Sautee; a lot of people get it wrong. There. I feel much better.

CHip,
Maybe CWM knows something we don’t. I won’t be surprised if he left, by the way shouldn’t he be on the road recruiting, may be a hint. As for B-ball program, we need an established college coach, not an ex-NBA guy. Sure do like Grant (VCU), Miller(Xavier) and Dixon (Pitt). We got the bread to throw at them.

Evans, it doesn’t look like its important! UGA continues to hire unproven coaches. I hope he realizes with the talent the state of Georgia produces every year our program would be great with the right coach!! Its time for change, EVANS! GO DAWGS!!

Of course Damon Evans is going to say that UGA wants a winning basket ball program. However as a season ticket holder I see him at a majority of the home games and the fact that he is suffering right along with the rest of us lends credence to that statement.

Chip, as to Coach Felton, I am very sorry to say that I think he is halfway out the door due to the team’s poor performance. I think that he has been snake-bitten since he came to UGA. First, he had to try to clean up behind Harrick. Then, Louis Williams went pro instead of coming to UGA. Then, Coach Felton had all the problems with several of his starters not being able to either stay healthy or stay out of trouble with the law. And, OBTW, are te legal troubles an example of poor background checks by our coaching staff, or is it poor choices by the student-athletes? Now, we have a very talented freshman, but he was hurt until after the season had already begun, and now it seems that Tompkins can’t get any support from the rest of the team. I’m not sure what can be done about Georgia basketball. We need a “hot” big-name coach so that we can recruit with the SEC basketball powers, but I don’t see anyone necessary available(and I’m not sure the ex-Raptors coach qualifies as a hot big-name coach). For CWM, I have very mixed feelings. I still can’t understand how we could play “lights-out” defense against Auburn and Hawaii in 2007, then play so poorly in other games, particularly Alabama and Florida this past year. Now, as to Stillwater, I think that we may get several hundred fans out there, but no where near what we had in Arizona. We’re going because one of my brothers and his family live in OKC, and they’ll be meeting us there, and also because my Dad is a long-time season-ticket holder (since he graduated in 1955), and he hardly ever misses any game, either home or away.

I think the above “blog” really sums up the basketball situation. After about 3 sentences about Georgia basketball, Chip lapses into what did Matthew Stafford have for breakfast. I have been a season ticket holder for about 35 years. I really don’t know why I ever expect any thing different. The biggest crowds over the years has been when FOOTBALL recruits attend a game. The people in the stands act like Kentucky basketball fans by ignoring the game and staring at high school football players. Folks, it ain’t gonna happen. The athletic department is not committed to a winning basketball program. I’m sure that the new 30 mil weight room will soon be used for football.

Chip, Instead of making Texas the “premium” game (which makes a lot more sense to me,) OSU has decided that Georgia gets that distinction. According to this morning’s Tulsa World, the basic season ticket price is $479. They do have West-end (i.e. endzone) season tickets for $336 or $1,120 for a package of 4. The only other option according to the paper is Club level tickets, which include food service(and I think access to booze.) There are 300 of those remaining, and they cost $679 each, but you have to donate $1,500 to the POSSE club first, in order to purchase those. By the way, OSU also plays Texas, Missouri, Texas Tech and Colorado at home this year, along with Houston, Rice, and Grambling State, so you should be able to get rid of most of the other tickets (that’s right, 8 home games.) I’m still incredibly disappointed.

Can’t see dawg fans showing up at Ok St. This team has something like 19 starters coming back, a prolific 40pt per game offense, etc. This one is going to get ugly. Just can’t see Joe Cox and whoever might be the tailback keeping pace with the cowboy offense. Dawgs dip to 8-4 with 3 sec losses including the usual blowout loss to UF. Look at the bright side though, you don’t have to play the bammers so that’s one less humiliation that you don’t have to worry about.

I am surely glad that we do not play in the ACC. Can you imagine what Duke, UNC, Wake, etc. would do to us? In a somewhat down year for the SEC, we are still with the bottom feeders! I live a good ways from Athens, but have gone down in the past( when Tubby and Harrick had competetive teams) to see some games, but the recent teams of Felton hardly warrant making the the trip. This team is even hard to watch on tv, every trip down the court is an adventure, usually a bad one! A change is needed at the top, probably not mid season, but definitely at seasons end. If the locals don’t show up, how do they expect us from away places come to see these type teams play? How disgusting for a large Univ. to put a product like this on the market, particularly with the talent in the state, and metro Atlanta in particular. Please Damon Evans, make some changes!!!

Last year after the SEC tournament, I blogged and asked the fans not to get caught up in the euphoria that existed after the Dawgs won the SEC tourney. For my blog, I caught a lot of grief from bloggers who thought that UGA had finally turned around their BB program. I said that wait another year: that UGA would again finish in the bottom half of the Eastern Division. People scoffed and said extend Felton’s contract; he had finally proven that he’s got “it”. What are they saying today?

The B-ball team is in the same state of disrepair that it was in when I showed up in Winter of 1978. Our hall intramural team was about as good. I have to agree with Rabun, watching a few minutes of the game last weekend was agonizing.

Um, truth be known, apparently you have not taken notice at how well Georgia fans travel. Oklahoma State is improving each year but they do not play enough defense and their offense tends to struggle against good defenses. Even if Georgia had no chance in that game they would easily buy their allotment of tickets. Regarding Ga/Fla, you’re probably right but let’s go ahead and play the game before just giving it to the Gators (see USC - Oregon State last year). As far as “the bammers” go, let’s see how they respond to multiple injuries like UGA when expectations are very high. Bama was 0-2 without their best lineman.

Kudos to the Lawrence kid on the track team - we’ve had a decent team for a long time, but haven’t had a “star” in a while. I’ll definately start trying to keep up with them a little more this year.
As far as basketball goes, I must agree with the masses. I defended Felton for a long time, and still appreciate a lot of what he has endured and accomplished with UGA bball. Unfortunately, he just isn’t the man to make it a consistent, competitive program. I rarely (actually, this is the first time) believe in midseason firings, but if I see the same disconnect with the team this weekend that I saw last, he has to go if there is a prayer of even making this a mediocre season. I’ll still make the loyal trek to Athens to support the team either way. I wish more people would. The team deserves it even if the coach doesn’t.
Go Dawgs!

Truth be known needs to research some truth. Dawg fans know how to get to the airport. 20,000 strong in Tempe, Tulsa/Stillwater?Ok City will be the same.
Want another truth? Check the score of the ‘05 UGA/OSU game. That cowboy team was just as heralded for their offense as ‘09’s will be. Dawgs will control the clock and use their talented veteran O line to stampede the cowboys in their brand new stadium.

i don’t think you can say enough about someone who won’t comprise his beliefs just so he can win. he’s had to boot alot of good players because they just couldn’t adhere to team rules. the man can coach and will succeed if not at georgia then somewhere else.

Chip, If a sprinter runs a 6.75 in the 60 meters, coming out of blocks, what do you think his 40 yard time would be? I calculate it at 4.15 at the very best. I am sure he was accelerating at the end and was much faster in the last 20 than the first 20. I would be willing to bet that his first 40 yards were no faster than 4.3 or 4.35.
Here is the point I would like to make. When football coaches, high school and college, make the grand claims about a running back or a receiver running a 4.3 or 4.4 or 4.5 40yd, it is nothing but bullC*@#! There is no way a6’3” 220lb running back or receiver is going to run close to a 4.3, from a standing start or a three point stance. But give the coaches credit for pumping up their players and promoting them to be great. and shame on writers and fans for buying into this folly.
What do you think?

Murf, I tend to agree with you. When you look at the NFL combine stats, you don’t see many if any 4.3 forties. You would think that some would improve their time through their college training, and these 4.3 high school players would be in the 4.2s by the time they left college. A football player in the 4.2s is extremely rare indeed.

Like many of you I have been going to UGA basketball games for about 25 years and we have thrown some pretty bad teams out there over this period. However, I can say without a doubt that Saturdays performance against an unranked Kentucky was the absolute worst that I have ever seen. Not only can they not shoot, rebound or play defense, but apparently they can’t hustle either. And what does our esteemed coach do after embarrassing our entire state? He hops on a plane to DC for the inauguration. So let me get this straight. Your team scores a combined 85 points in two games (the Vandy game was the lowest total in 49 years) and you take a three day vacation right in the middle of the season. Unbelieveable. And as if that’s not enough, I just found out that we gave this guy a raise with an extension. He’s owed 2.3 million over the next three years. Go Dawgs!?!?!?!?!?

I just thought I’d let you know that as far as Arizona State tickets went, maybe in part because they went down the week before, but you could NOT sell that student ticket on facebook or craigslist in Athens or in Tempe. Literally I could not give away my roommate’s ticket. So, no, UGA students were never happy to pay $99 to $129 dollars for a ASU ticket.. I unhappily paid $49.99 for a ticket I could have gotten for free.

There’s a documentary following four players preparing for the draft, and one of the people at the camp they attend is Michael Johnson. Surely Felton is gone or what’s left of the program will be dead. Every single aspect of Georgia basketball is just dreadful, except for maybe, the quality of person Felton is. No disrepect intended for Evans, but this call is too big for him. He may be the figurehead on the decision….but I’m sure its not HIS call to make. To all of you giving Sautee Dawg a hard time about spelling “defence” with a “c”. It’s not wrong. Although most Americans spell it “defense,” the original British spelling is with a “c”
We could clearly spend all day correcting bloggers spelling and grammar, but what’s the point. Most of us are just slamming a few thoughts down while we are supposed to be working, with no thought of typos or spelling or grammar anyway, as long as we make our point. It’s just a blog.
To the point, I’ve always liked Felton and admire the job he has done in adding discipline to the program, but at some point we need to see results, especially after 6 years. I think it’s time for he and UGA to part ways unless the dogs show a lot of improvement soon. That Kentucky game was a huge embarrassment. Adams refresher: Adams hired Jim Harrick against the recommendation of the search committee and Vince Dooley. Adams personally admitted the hoodlum, Tony Cole, to the Univeristy against Harrick’s recommendation. When Harrick, Coles, and company got caught, Adams hung them out to dry, then pulled the basketball team from the conference tournament. When the team members tried to talk to Adams, he called the police. I agree that Adams knows nothing about sports. Evans may be a nice guy, but he has no say so in anything.

Cuz, Urban is know as a “spread” coach in more ways than one. If you noticed {how could you not}, Urban tends to leave his starters in longer than most coaches even after victory is assured. I believe Meyer is well aware of the line and likes to beat the spread if possible, thus bringing the Gators to the attention of the BCS voters and the guys in Vegas with the big cigars. Blowing people out gets you lots of air time on ESPN and lots of press. Lots of air time and lots of press makes the voters in the coaches poll aware of you, most coaches do not have much time to watch other teams play. Unfortunately, it seems that being a gentleman and a good sport, as in pulling your starters and letting your opponent save some face, doesn’t count when it comes to gettimg to the BCS title game. That is another reason I want some kind of playoff system. So if the Gators are playing Vandy, and the line is twenty and Meyer is ahead by twenty in the fourth, he will try to score at least another field goal, just to beat the spread. So if the Gators are playing a weaker team, never take the points.

I agree, those “one and done” guys really do not help the program as far as stability goes, ask coach K about signing those types. He was stung a few times in the past, and really tries to avoid them now. Your guy Hewitt can surely get the talent over there, but what happens to them? 0-5 start not the way to endear oneself to the fans and AD. And they thought Bobby was done?

He has had enough time to get this program on the right track, but he has not done it. Felton does not seem to be an accomplished recruiter, but he has shown the knack for running off many of the players he gets. Many people admire him for standing up for what is right and running a tight ship. What is more valuable than running a tight ship and being tough, is getting players to pull for the same thing. To get players to strive the same goals and getting players to abide by the rules and manage their classroom requirements because to not do those things will hurt the team. I’m not impressed with Felton’s coaching or management ability. An example of Felton’s lack of coaching skill occurred in game earlier this year. UGA had the ball out of bounds under their basket, but failed to get the ball in bounds and lost the ball on a time violation. Felton’s response I preferred us losing the ball rather wasting a timeout or making a bad pass. First of all a well coached team would have passed the ball in to the backcourt, and maintained their possession. A well coached team would not hold the ball when they had a timeout available. It was an unfortunate day(s) last year when the his team won the SEC Tournment. It will be a very positive day when he leaves UGA.

Cuz, I think you may be right. There are so many reasons that UGA BB is suffering right now, but not sure any of it is going to matter. Right guy, wrong time, who knows. Somebody is going to benifit from all this eventually. I believe sometimes its better to be the man sitting next to the man sitting next to the man. And who called that MF a picolo player.
And obviously Evans isnt going to say much about the man that currently holds the job during the middle of the season. Stop asking him. even if he had already made up his mind, why would he say anything that would detract from the team right now. I foolishly would like to see them win the a few more if only for expereince. We are going to run a team in basketball again next year, irrespective of the coach, right?

Even with willie martinez, the dawgs will blow out Ok State—-they have no defense, and Cox will put up big numbers against their terrible secondary. Dawgs 41 Ok State 24

felton has simply had major problems recruiting and why i don’t know.
he had a great record at western kentucky where he excelled in recruiting and why it is a problem at georgia is beyond me.
i think he is a good x&o’s coach, but he simply cannot get it done at georgia.
it will be interesting to see how damon evans performs since this is his first major test since being athletic director.
i wonder if we can steal tubby from minnesota!

Bulldawg, if that moniker reflects a connection with UGA, unfortunately, from my experiences there on campus, I could suppose from your screen name that you are white. Whether or not you personally understand the significance of that black man becoming President of this country at this time…… is a you problem. Sorry. Whether or not going to the inauguration is seen as neglecting his job or not, well, that his and his boss’ problem. Sometimes life moments are more important than anything else. However, if you make that decision, then you man up to the consequences. Sounds like a you’re a sore loser to me about the election of President Obama and personally, I feel sorry for those of your mindset. Thankfully, those of that mindset are slowly withering away (see the election results…blacks weren’t the only ones who voted for him!).
I agree (and you should spread the word to all races) that basing decisions on race is disgusting. But I guess sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to make the game a little more fair for everyone. But anyways, this is a sports blog and I apologize to all for getting off topic here. It’s just that certain people who don’t get it, and then generalize about those that do, really irk me sometimes.
Bulldawg, you have a great day and God bless you. Make sure you show up to work too and stop in and say hi. This might freak you out, but chances are becoming greater that my office will more than likely be the one right next to yours.

Has anyone thought of making Suzanne Yoculan AD after she retires. A gator fan told me Florida’s success is due to Jeremy Foley finding and retaining the best coaches possible. Just think, do you really think Yoculan would put up with Dennis Felton or Willie Martinez? She has the passion, personalty, and drive to make Georgia competive with Florida, I don’t Damon Evans does.
