UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Change of power for Dogs as well
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Happy Inauguration Day everybody. I intended on getting up a blog much earlier today but a certain 18-month-old boy had other plans (cold and flu season, as you know). As ever, he’s my boss.
I’m sure everybody’s attention is on the Presidential Inauguration anyway. Mine certainly is. I’m watching as I’m blogging now. It’s an exciting time for our country no matter what side of the aisle you favor.
In a lot ways college sports are similar to our government’s system of power. Generally there’s a major personnel change about every four years or so. You could certainly say that this year at Georgia with Joe Cox moving in at quarterback for Matthew Stafford and, well, whomever moving in for Knowshon Moreno at tailback. Guess you could say Cox is the new prez and let’s say Caleb King as VP. Perhaps Georgia fans should throw an inaugural celebration later this year. Then again, I guess that’s what they call Picture Day.
Speaking of changes, the only real college football news yesterday was the finalization of the underclassmen pool for the NFL draft. The Bulldogs, as you’ve probably noted, were tied for most underclassmen entered with Stafford, Moreno and cornerback Asher Allen. South Carolina, oddly enough, and Ohio State also had three enter. Georgia came out pretty good considering it had at least six seriously considering it.
The national total of 46 was actually down from 53 last year. Of those, 14 were from the SEC, which I believe is also down. Some were no-brainers. Others left you saying, “what?” But this is, after all, the Land of Opportunity. May they all live long and prosper.
With that lame segue from the inauguration, I offer you these less lame links:
Willie Martinez critics take note — his alma mater, the U, is apparently interested in the Dogs’ defensive coordinator. That is, if their current DC accepts a lucrative offer from Oklahoma State… .
Apparently the British are concerned that American breeders are turning Bulldogs into “genetic monstrosities”. As noted Bulldog breeder Sonny Seiler so eloquently put it, “I don’t care what the British think.” …
Not sure what the wife of Ole Miss basketball coach Andy Kennedy was thinking but I have a feeling her lawsuit may come up on the SEC road this season… .
The New York Times examines the more shallow underclassman pool for the NFL draft.

If the U offers Martinez surely he will take the job. He knows that if he does not shut out every opponent next year the wolves will howl. he is loyal to richt but would be crazy to not take this lifeboat. The article sounds like the DC at Miami is a good bet to be gone as the U cannot match the money at OSU. (who can with T Boone shelling out the dollars. If OSU comes up with a better d then it could be along day next September for the Dawgs with or without WM.

If Martinez really does feel like he owes a debt to Richt, he should take the UM job if it’s offered. The position he’s put CMR into on and off the last few years is just not fair to a man that is loyal to a fault.

PLEASE TAKE WILLIE MIAMI…PLEASE. I say let him walk and give the job to Gardner who is most upbeat, aggressive, and our heart of recruiting so we can be assured he is not lured away for a DC job. It would only be if a HC job came up which would be some time for that to happen.

I would like all the Willie Martinez crybabies to name a realistic replacement if he were to go to Miami. The key word is REALISTIC. We cannot resurrect Erk Russell so I don’t want a bunch of pie in the sky notions of who should be our defensive coordinator. I want names of people that a) Richt would have a realistic shot at hiring, and b) Could make the Dawg defense one of the elite of the SEC. You have been whining for months about Martinez so this should not be hard. Get to work…

Hey Chip,
CWM should take the job. All circumstances aside, it’s alma mater and his area of the country. Miami does run the 4-3, which UGA runs. Besides, he can deflect some of the pressure off of him in the less exposed ACC. New DC canidates; Garner, Robert Nunn of Green Bay, use to be GMC head coach, Croom, Tuberville, my favorite Sean McDermott, Eagles secondary coach. Can you image UGA running Jim Johnson’s blitzing, attacking scheme in SEC. Wow! Get McDermott in here and free Willie.

If Willie leaves, Rodney would surely step in as the DC. I think its a win win situadtion for the dawgs, unless they decide to go after Sly Croom! I think that would be the best thing to do. Rodney Gardner as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting coordinator would be great! We need someone who is going to be tough on defense with our players and Mississippi State was always tough on defense. Only time will tell.

Willie possibly leaving is like a delayed christmas present to this UGA football program. It’s probably the only way to “get rid of Willie” by him taking another job. We know that CMR will protect and do whatever it takes to keep his friend employed regardless of the detriment he brings to the program with his under performing defenses of late.
This one’s for you georgia fan Replacement - Kirby Smart from Coach Saban’s staff. Someone who bled the “red and black” as a college player and would be passionate about coaching at UGA.

To georgia fan who referred to those of us fed up giving up 40plus points to Kentucky GT Ala UF etc etc as crybabies, I can safely tell you that Rodney Garner can easily take over as DC. I been to several UGA practices and he the most aggressive and I think respected def coach we have. He deserves the shot with his loyalty to UGA and would do an outstanding job as DC! He’ll get after that a$$ when they screw up rather than hug them and pat them on the back. Georgia Fan you need to go with Willie to Um so you can watch the points pile up in Miami instead of Athens.

So what makes everyone think that he is such a dog if he is being offered this job? Why would they not offer it to Garner, no offense to him?
Maybe while we are thinking about those questions, we should think about who really should get the offer for the UGA defensive coordinator. We have great admiration for Kirby, Will and co. Texas wasn’t exactly the defensive team of the year, now was it?
So before we wish him well, let us make sure we have something good in our well

Garner could possibly be a solid DC but that may not be what he wants to do. Given his pedigree, he probably could’ve been a coordinator at a big program several times by now. His strengths may indeed truly lie with recruiting and if he can’t be a head coach, that could be what he wants to concentrate on. The responsibilities of a coordinator would certainly impact the time and energy he could put into recruiting.
Garner’s one of the best recruiters in the country. Let’s keep him doing what he excels at.

Both of you are on crack. (Georgia Fan) What team have you been watching over the past four years??? UGA’s defense has regressed in every statistical way…including the most important stat (for a DC) points allowed. If you want names to replace him 1.) Rodney Garner - Great recruiter, good d-line coach, invaluable to UGA’s success 2.)Tommy Tuberville - Pretty darn good head football coach and defense is his specialty 3.) Slyvester Croom - Decent head coach - specialty defense…tons of SEC experience 4.) A sack of dirty old shirts…really, anything is better than slick Willie at this point.
I appreciate your support for UGA, but please don’t be a homer, be an obejective, supportive fan who knows is more than a blind loyalist.

All of you that are hoping for Tommy Tubberville or Kirby Smart for DC hear this: If you think the Gene Chizik over Turner Gil thing was an embarrasment for Auburn, let somebody other than Rodney Garner be named as DC. Besides, Rodney deserves it. He is as responsible for UGA’s success since the Ray Goff era as anyone. I like “Wil Walton“‘s idea above: Garner as DC and Smart to DB coach. Who knows if we could get him from Saban though. He is probably taking the Muschamp route to a DC job of his own…..

I think that DCWM should seriously consider the UM DC job if the opportunity presents itself. As has been stated many times prior, Rodney Gardner would, in my humble opinion, do an excellent job as DC. The Sylvester Croom slant is also quite appealing. Regardless, of how the chips might fall, there has to be marked improvement on the defensive units’ part or WM WILL be gone after 2009 and CMR WILL be on the hot seat if he’s not already sitting next to WM on the train down south!
Go Dawgs!
P.S. We all need to get a life if this is the stuff that we’re always paying attention to! It’s college football with a bunch of young men playing a game they love before it becomes a business for them.

Seems as if Reality Check thinks you have to be a “young Dawg” to wish Willie well in south Florida. Well, I’ve been a Dawg for more than 50 years and think Willie going to Miami is not only a good idea, but an obvious solution to the difficult position he has put his good friend Marc Richt in.
The only question is whether Coach Garner can do the job. If so, promote him as soon as Willie slams the door behind him.
As for Kirby being a loyal Dawg - Does staying one year and bolting to the Dolphins = being a loyal Dawg? I don’t buy it.

I don’t recall CWM taking a single snap on the field, missing any tackles or blowing any assignments. I don’t recall him being on the sidelines on crutches or in a no contact jersey. There was no sign of a defensive end on the field this year, Jeff Owens out for the year, Ellerbe getting hurt early in the Alabama game and out for weeks, Asher Allen playing with a broken hand, discipline cases causing players to lose games. Look what happened to Alabama’s offense after losing their starting tackle in the bowl game. Now look at Georgia’s losses on defense and then I dare you to complain about coaching. It’s the players on the field not the man on the sidelines. Look at the defenses the last few years, always finishing in the top level of the nation. Don’t throw a man under the bus for one bad year. That should be left for Tech fans.
By gdawginkalamazoo
January 20, 2009 1:53 PM | Link to this
I can it now. When Willie moves to Miami and his defense holds Tech to 48 yards rushing next year.
If Willie goes and Garner wants it I think he should have a shot. Loyal to the program and a damn fine recruiter could strengthen the D. If he doesn’t want it get Croom in there. Tuberville is waiting for Saban to leave.
Chip, thanks for that link to the Ole Miss BB coach. If you people haven’t clicked on that link you better do so. Hilarious doesn’t begin to describe it. Be sure to read the comments too. Sounds like the coach is working overtime on his dribble and pass drills.

Even though I STILL don’t see this happening (why would CWM leave UGA for UM, even though he is an alum?) I’ll play along.
I’m with Dawg Tired on Smart. I’d rather have Garner who has shown his loyalty and earned this opportunity many times over.
And did someone actually mention Coach Tubs? He can’t come from what I’ve read about his “release” from AwwHell. And if he could, why? Really…why would he? He’ll fish for a year and get paid for it then take over Miami’s program as the head man once Shannon is fired…with or without CWM.

Free Willie…Please Miami…offer him the job!..
Rhino….It’s the DC job to teach kids how not to miss tackles…how not to blow assignments, how not to get unsportsmanlike penalties. It’s also the DC job to make ADJUSTMENTS during the game…which seems to be Willies #1 problem.

Can’t say it would kill me to lose Martinez, but if we go with Garner I think we take a step back. I don’t think Garner is ready for the jump to DC. His interest in working with Monte tells you alot about his own thoughts about where he is right now. If Martinez is offered by UM he has to take it and Richt will be in one hell of a pickle, unless Garner knows he isn’t there yet. How about we throw 1.2 mil at Charlie Strong? If UT can dole out that kinda cash so can we. The Falcons DC has to be bored with a whole year in Atlanta right? Whose coaching defense at TCU? If Martinez goes and Garner thinks he’s earned it and ready then he has to get it, but there are probably better options.

Connorsgp, as a matter of fact I have looked at the depth chart. Great talent across the board. How is it the same OL as 08 when you lose 2 starting OTs? Carl Johnson will slide out from 8 starts at OG. Other OTs on roster are Freshmen/Redshirts (not that a FR/RS can’t come in and compete in the SEC). It IS still a weaker OL than UF normally has (and losing OC Mullen will afftect the O as a whole). DL is very strong, especially if starting DT Estopinan gets another year of eligibility.

One problem with the Sylvester Croom talk he’s mainly coached offense: http://www.mstateathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=90894&SPID=10997&DBOEMID=16800&ATCLID=931622&Q_SEASON=2007 I’d love Tubbs but that makes no sense about like a UT fan telling me there where going to get Stoops from OU right after they ran Foolmer off. Let’s pull a UT tactic & go after Ed Oregon LOL! To be real about it, Tyrone Nix from Ole Miss would be a great get. Whoever the DC is next year even it is WM needs to be more aggressive & adaptable to the personnel. One thing that frustrates me is how we see FL making changes during the season to alter their schemes to their personnel based on skills & injuries. BUT we don’t seem to be able to do that without a bye week. One reason for that on the offensive side could be the weakness of the OL the last couple of seasons. On D we saw changes after the bye week in 07 this year I think injury bug was so bad they were just trying to have enough guys in the 2 deep healthy enough to play.

Connorsgp, BTW, you never answered my question. And I don’t remember me (or many others) saying that the Gators 08 D was going to be weaker than the 07 D. In fact, I thought before the season that the Gators D would be much improved and the reason why UF would be better than 9-4 in 2008.

Everyone screaming for Sylvester Croom to become UGA’s next DC might want to look up his background on Wikipedia. He has only coached linebackers on the defensive side of the ball. He was OFFENSIVE coordinator at Green Bay and a running backs coach at Tampa, Indy, and San Diego so you might want to rethink that one. No disrespect to CSC because I believe he’s a great man and a great coach… but DC at UGA? I don’t think so. I would love to see UGA offer Muschamp the same deal that Texas has given him. DC now and head coach in waiting because CMR has been here 8 years now and most of the greats only stay around for 10 or 12, so Muschamp would be a perfect fit back here in Athens where he belongs.

It would seem that after many years of loyalty, that Rodney Garner(not Gardner) would get a shot at the DC’s position. At least we would have many candidates to choose from. I doubt that Kirby Smart would return to Athens to coach defensive backs. He thinks he’s on the way to a head coaching job. Also I don’t see why everyone is so infatuated with Muschamp. When he was DC at Auburn, we smoked them. What kind of endorsement is that?

If the Miami Herald is to be believed, that means the Hurricanes are going to come after Georgia’s Willie Martinez. Martinez hasn’t returned phone messages and I haven’t been able to reach CMR to see if UM has asked permission to take to Martinez. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, a quote from the Oklahoman regarding Young:
“We’re very excited to add Bill Young to our staff,” coach Mike Gundy said. “He has been successful everywhere he’s been. He will bring a great deal of experience to the defensive side of the ball and he is very familiar with our conference. It’s great to have an OSU graduate and a former player as an addition to the staff.”

CRG is obviously happy with his current job or he would have left a couple of weeks ago for UT. He serves UGA very well as recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach (and I think defensive line coach?) and he loves working for CMR so I would go after a little bit younger, more fiery coach. When we land Reid and Jarvis Jones, I’m sure most will agree.

Kendawg… Muschamp did beat the Gators twice with Auburn. I do like Kirby or Garner. What we could use on defense right now is for Greg Reid to sign with the DAWGS!

CWM shouldn’t be getting this much hate mail. CBV was a tough act to follow and the Dawg Nation got spoiled. CWM needs to take this opportunity (if given) or he may never get another chance to coach his alma mater. He’s a good SEC coach but he’ll be a great ACC coach. Hope you get the chance to go to Miami CWM! Good luck, if so, and thanks for your hard work here in Athens!

If Willie goes, the short list:
Rodney Garner Will Muschamp - not likely Kirby Smart
I also like the idea of Sly Croom but doubt he will take a DC position. He will get a mid-major Head job somewhere. Same thing with Tuberville, although I think there may be too much history to even consider and SERIOULSY doubt he would bow to a Coord position to one if AU’s big rivals even if UGA would offer.
All that being said, I would prefer Willie stayed. Change is rarely a good thing for a team that has won 10+ games in 6 of the last 7 seasons.

DT Warner to visit UT this weekend; DE Montgomery changes to Jan. 30 By Dave Hooker
Warren is originally from Mays High School in Atlanta, Ga.
“I will be visiting Tennessee this weekend,” Warner told Rivals.com. “I was interested because it is only two hours away from home.”
Distance won’t be the deciding factor, Warner said, now that he has reevaluated his priorities.
“Playing at home was once important, but it is not anymore,” Warner said. “I have been away now for over a year now so. Location is no longer an issue. It’s all about business now. Meaning getting my degree and playing time

I think a lot of you guys aren’t being very realistic. You put up statistics about the defense’s regression but fail to put those numbers in perspective. Yes, the number of points an opponent has put up on us has increased, but the number of points that SEC offenses are putting up as a whole has increased considerably, yet no one wants to take that into consideration. The teams that Van Gorder coached against are very different than the teams we play now. I don’t think it’s fair to compare Van Gorder and Willie Martinez. When Van Gorder coached, there were no teams like Florida who were putting up 50+ points on teams every week. Times have changed. Everyone wants to get Willie fired but aren’t considering the true consequences of that. Tommy Tubberville and Sylvester Croom aren’t logical answers. At all. There’s no way Tubberville takes a coordinator position and Sylvester Croom is definitely not qualified to be a defensive coordinator. I also agree with many on here that Garner is a great recruiter, but probably isn’t ready for a DC position. It just doesn’t make logical sense to me to get rid of him right now. I mean, weren’t we ranked in the top 10 on defense last year with Willie as the DC? If he chooses to stay, he deserves a fair chance of showing what he can do with healthy players. I know that this year sucked for UGA fans, but let’s be a little realistic here.

CMR has stated every time the possibility of one of his assistants leaving comes up, he already has two or three people in mind to replace them. And we might not even know who the hell they are when he makes his announcement! How many people on this blog can honestly say that they had heard of Brian Van Gorder before he came to UGA? Those guys know a lot of people that are relatively unheard of but are ready to make their move out of the shadows and become great coaches at big time schools. I trust CMR in whomever he chooses.

Send Willie your blessings not your loyalty. It’s time to catch up with the offense. Defense wins championships. Scoring 30pts should constitute a victory. 45pts should be a blow out!

They always pull against each other. Look at the History of any successful team. You wouldn’t’ know that because it’s obvious you have never played the game of football. Oh yea, Rodney Garner is a chub-butt that is just lookin for a free BBQ somewhere when he needs to go to work and not rely on talent alone. With that talent anyone could go 10-3 !! You do a great job for this program and we are extremely lucky to have you. Keep up the good work! And by the way dawgtime, a team is a team no matter their color. Dawgtime,
You are obviously pretty effin stupid to write what you did about white football players because, first of all, its patently racist. Further, the idea that any human being on the planet would believe that their sports team could be improved via the influx of “white talent” is shocking to me in its disconnect from reality. I mean you must be the guy who bets on Gerry Cooney to be World Heavyweight Champ aren’t you? In other words you are a chump. A stupid ignorant backward azz chump. Go pull for Dartmouth. Richt and all of Georgia’s assistants are out on the road recruiting. Hopefully we’ll find out more tomorrow.

Offer Rodney the job whether WM takes the Miami job or not. He may be happy where he is and not want the job. If so, give him a few more perks or more money, he is a quality Coach. I think he could already have been an OC somewhere else. If he wants it, fine, if he doesn’t, there are a lot of good Head Coaches out there that could fill the bill, if we could work the money out. I’d love to have TT in here, but probably a tough hire. But, the main thing is to offer Rodney the job.

Hug them and pat them on the back? I don’t know how many practices you’ve been to, probably none, but as an Athens resident, close to the program, I’ve been to more than a few and I can tell you CWM might be as rough as anyone not named Fabris when a guy screw up in practice. No, the defense has not been ‘Dawgworthy’ since Van Gorder left…and took Pollack, Davis, Blue, with him. But I will tell you this: Willie is a good man, a good coach, and totally a credit to the real ‘U’…UGA.
I wouldn’t blame him for leaving, back to his roots and away from idiot posts such as the ones’ we see here, (Tuberville? As a DC with 5 million coming in for doing nothing???puhleeze) and perhaps Garner would be a good, even great DC. So, who’s your recruiting coordinator? You better get a good one. Without athletes, even Coach Erk wouldn’t have much success. Stay or go, good luck to a good man.

I realize its different than a football staff in terms of specifically defined player groups, but I know Felton isnt the guy standing there running the shooting drills. Dawg time, for your information, not only did I play organized sports, I exceled at them. Was on a team that went to the state championship3 times in the 80’s, won 2 of them, and later played ball in the big ten. I think when it comes to football I’m a little bit more qualified to talk about it than you.Two of my first cousins [we grew up in the same town]and played on the same team have SB rings, and my uncle is a two time SB coach, as well as a ex linebacker in the Nfl.Me well I went on to play a half season with the Saints before getting badly hurt.Dawgtime it’s a team sport, or did you forget you loyal dawg fan the last Heisman winner at UGA was black, Oh that seems to be the last time a national championship was at UGA to.Maybe you need to stick with Nascar, or the NHL, but you would leave the NHL alone when you realize that for the last two years that a black goal tender played in the allstar game you BIGOT!Oh, one more little piece of info for you BIGOT, the last time football was segregated [in the 60’s] the SWAC put more players in the Nfl in a 10 year period than the SEC. Check the facts you BIGOT PREJUDICE RED NECK.And ask the people in Alabama when you join them why BEAR BRYANT got black players, because USC took them apart with there BLACK PLAYERS! aND DON’T FORGET TO CALL YOUR NEW BLACK LEADER, MR.PRESIDENT

People that think it “unfair” or not applicable to compare defensive coordinator records are the ones that are not “realistic” did not read many posts carefully. The lack of disciplined play (i.e. missed tackles, blown coverages, teaching Cornerbacks to hold recievers (however slyly) as a matter of course, teaching all defensive backfield players it is not only OK but desirable to play with your back to the ball, downright wrong defensive set calls, the willful commision of unsportsman like conduct and personal fouls by numerous players) are directly and soley the responability of the DC.WM has done very poorly in all these areas. Even though circumstances has changed everywhere VanGorder is still a hot commodity today. The numbers of UGA defensive players drafted for the NFL and other Leagues have remained constant. The points per game noted so ablely by Ugadawg30 is but the thumbnail sketch that boils it down for such a comparison. The only negative tone I do not agree with is that Coach M “doesn’t make adjustments”. To the contrary, he does that pretty well. His problem from where I sit is he does not have the team ready from the get go! We lose to teams (WVa 2004 Sugar Bowl)because we give up big first quarters (see Alabama 2008) and on occasion “shut the other team down for the other three. There are times when we did not stop teams late but they are far rarer than first quarter flops. One word for Willy—-ReMax. ALM

Count me among those who hope UM takes Martinez. That will probably be best for all. Martinez is a class man and I have no doubt he’ll be a big help at Miami, but he is an albatross around the neck of Coach Richt. The expectations on him at UGA next year will be enormous because of the disappointing performance in 2008. Take this job, Coach Martinez, and everyone wins.
