UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

The signs are everywhere

Dennis Felton is leaving no doubt about what’s top priority for his Georgia basketball team right now.

On the four walls of the team’s practice court, about 100 signs have been posted, all exactly the same.

In big red letters, they command:

“Blockout!

“Rebound!”

The Bulldogs’ rebounding has been “a consistent inconsistency” all season, Felton said Monday. And recently it has deteriorated and put the Bulldogs on a three-game losing streak heading into Wednesday’s game at Vanderbilt.

Thus, the reminders all around the practice court.

Other notes from Athens:

— Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers will go for his 800th career victory Thursday night when his team plays Savannah State in Stegeman Coliseum. He would become just the fifth major-college women’s basketball coach to reach 800 victories.

— This is one of those stats that make you do a double-take: In 30 years of coaching at Georgia, Landers has never had a team lose four games in a row. That improbable record was kept intact Sunday when Georgia ended a losing streak at three by beating South Carolina.

— And for those who have asked, here’s the full list of Georgia football players who will miss spring practice while rehabbing from surgeries they had this past season or have had/will have this month:

Neland Ball, DE, patella tendon

Rod Battle, DE, shoulder

Chris Davis, OL, hip

Matt DeGenova, walk-on DE, shoulder

Darius Dewberry, LB, shoulder

Justin Fields, LB, knee (ACL)

Bruce Figgins, TE, shoulder

Akeem Hebron, LB, ankle

Jeff Owens, DT, knee (ACL)

Craig Sager, walk-on WR, shoulder

Trinton Sturdivant, OT, knee (ACL)

Vince Vance, OL, knee (ACL)

Corenelius Washington, DE, forearm

Also: RB Dontavius Jackson will be limited initially in spring after arthroscopic knee surgery last month.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR “PINK OUT”. IT SHOULD WORK OUT GREAT FOR YOUR BASKETBALL AND FOOTBALL TEAMS.

No commitment to basketball at UGA at all. How many ’ Basketball Schools” would let a program flounder like this for years. None. It’s something to do until spring practice. Can you just see a top ranked kid walk into Stegman for the first time and not laugh after visiting a ACC power. Where’s HE going to sign. Yes, Felton is a FINE MAN, JUST like CMR. It’s about WINS, Championships, Banners hanging from the rafters. Felton being a fine man gets us that, a fine man. Ditto Mark Richt. Ask Bama and Florida if Saban and Meyer are sleze bags. yes. next, look at the hardware in their trophy case.

Hey Tim,

Hate to say it but CDF’s job isn’t looking so safe this year. I have watched a couple of games (TECH, MiZZO), this team doesn’t have a ball -handler, or a consistant scoring threat. Woodbury & Thompkins seem to have the ability but don’t have high basketball I.Q.’s. they make bad decisions in the heat of the game. Everybody’s going to say they are young, but how many times are we going to say that about a Felton team, Just seems like our basketball program is not at the level of our other sports. As for the football team, this Spring is critical to this season’s success. To see so many counted on players not participate is not good. However, i think Cox will be more Shockley than Joe T., and the defense will be outstanding with Owens and Atkins healthy, veteran secondary & bad taste from ‘08 season. Dawgs will compete, although Tenn. scares me this year,& that first trip to OkieState.

This program is in shambles! With all the talent that this great state produces and UGA cant hire a great big name coach! It makes me sick at all the oppurtunity UGA could have in basketball if they wouldnt be dumba$$es during the hiring process and settle for a felton! UGA deserves better!! GO DAWGS!!

WILLIE MARTINEZ NEEDS TO LEAVE ATHENS ON THE NEXT BUS AND HE NEEDS TO TAKE DENNIS FELTON WITH HIM. TALK ABOUT TWO LOSERS … HOW LONG? HOW LONG? HOW LONG WILL MICHAEL ADAMS AND DAMON EVANS ALLOW THIS TYPE OF POOR PERFORMANCE TO PULL DOWN UGA ATHLETICS? IF THIS WERE ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE SEC … BOTH THESE CLOWNS WOULD ALREADY BE LONE GONE. AREN’T YOU THRILLED THAT TWO SUCH LOSERS HAVE KEY SLOTS IN TWO MAJOR UGA PROGRAMS? WILLIE AND DENNIS … GET ON A BUS … TAKE A TRAIN … BOARD A PLANE … JUST LEAVE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. GEORGIA WILL BE MUCH BETTER OFF AFTER YOU’RE GONE!!!!!

Mike Adams is the guy running things. Evans is the ADMINISTRATOR. It’s about the Money. Georgia Football MAKES SO MUCH MONEY that all the heads in ATHENS ARE IN THE SAND. I love UGA, but something is not right up there when it comes to Athletics. Other SEC schools want to win BIG TIME. I know we say we want to, but look at a Felton and his record and you have to wonder. I would love for it to leak out that Adams met with Richt and told him he was concerned about the defense. Why ? Adams tells him that people who write BIG CHECKS are concerned !

read this article about Joe Cox and tell me you don’t want this guy starting for us next year. Even back then Stafford was his same, monotone “it happens, oh well” attitude. I get so tired of hearing people talk about Stafford’s big arm. He can throw a football a long way, last I checked this was not a javelin competition. Atleast Cox looks like he’s going to give a sh!t come next fall.

Based on Felton’s inability to coach at all, I would imagine that the team will have zero rebounds Wednesday night.

It is as if the players refuse to listen to him, are too incompetent to absorb what he says or simply teaches the wrong things. Whatever the case there are only two more months until he will be mercifully dismissed and UGA basketball can move forward.

By Tired B-ball fan

It’s Felton’s offensive scheme, or lack there of that’s causing the biggest problems. While other teams are cutting back door, running pick an rolls, and executing crisp ball movement for easy shots, we just STAND AROUND until the clock runs down and we take a poor shot. Letting them go playground style would yield better results that the current offense.

Sorry Football Ken, you are dead wrong about Thompkins. He has great IQ. Yes he will make freshman mistakes, but most everytime he touches the ball GOOD things happen like a shot for him or a good pass to a teammate. If Felton was smart he would run the offense through Thompkins when we end up in half court play.

Aside from the lack of offense, the other big problem I see with Felton’s teams is lack of player talent development. Albert Jackson is still making Freshman mistakes. Woodberry still settles for jump shots when he could be a great slasher. Jeremy Price actually seems to have gone backwards from last year.

As an oddity in the Bulldog nation—-a basketball enthusiast—I’m sicke and tired of mediocrity. Felton may be a great man but he will never deliver us a great team.

Hey Ramble On, thanks for your regular postings here. You actually might want to take some time to go tutor Reggie Ball. He still has not figured out where to throw the ball on fourth down. Just make sure you are not using the George O’Leary method of changing grades to keep players on the field. Superior education. Ha!

Tim - I know it’s early and I hate to change the subject to the Diamond Dawgs, but we heard after the CWS that the team was angling to get out of the exclusive Nike contract that required us to use their sorry bats (the bats that might have cost us the Series). Is there any update on that before the season gets going? It’s looking like we may be poised to break our post-CWS appearance down year streak. Just Curious.

The basketball program and the football program should not EVER be talked about in the same way. EVER. UGA just finished in the Top 10 in football for the 6th or 7th time in 8 years. The basketball program isn’t on the same planet as the football program. Don’t try and compare the two because they are vastly different.

I was at the Tennessee game on Saturday and it looked to me like the players were just merely inexperienced, which was actually kind of encouraging. Inexperience can easily be fixed. Other times, they’ve looked just plain inept and hopeless, but Saturday, they actually looked like they could improve a lot with more playing time.

Tell ya what sparky, why don’t you go up to the rehab center and berate all those athletes (who are 10000x the men you’ll ever be) for their “posturing”. Let us know how that works out.

Perhaps you could also stop by the English department and learn when not to use apostrophes.

Yeah DawgGirl 32. That’s the problem.
The UGAA seems content with a basketball program that’s not on the same planet with football. That’s the problem. The idea you can’t have both a successful football AND basketball program been derailed by Florida, TN, OSU, Ala, Texas, and many others.

And yes the freshmen looked inexperienced at times, but the problem is that so did the juniors and seniors on the team. That’s Felton and staff’s fault.

By DawgOnTheFarm

January 13, 2009 8:22 PM | Link to this

DawgJones - You have obviously never played competitive baseball before. Honestly, there are high school teams that would not touch these bats. We’re not talking about wooden bats here. There is some serious technological research that goes into the production of high quality aluminum and alloy bats. The industry has pretty much unanimously agreed that NIKE bats are pure s#*t and far behind the innovative curve. Just take a swing with a Nike bat, then use an Easton, DeMarini or TPX (companies that rely on staying ahead of the curve to stay in the black). Your lazy flies will become gap liners and Home Runs. This is not just bellyaching. This is a legitimate disadvantage. Still curious Tim or Chip.

First, see ya Asher. Hope you do well in the NFL. Guess that opens the door for Greg Reid. He’ll be starting at CB for the Dawgs this fall.

Secondly, the Nike bat situation is legit. Friends with Jake Crane and he confirmed that there was a problem with Nike’s bats. The guys know they had chances to win but also know that some of their balls came up just short while FSU’s balls had enough extra pop to get out. The Dawgs were not making excuses. They were just saying they deserve to have the best equipment available and if Nike can’t “do it” then get bats from somewhere else.

Not worried about those guys missing spring practice. Want them to be healthy come August 1 so they can start practicing at 100%.

I agree. I don’t want to hear about any more injuries either. We have 85 Scholarships, just like every other football program. We have the same number of practices and the same number of games. We should, actually, have an advantage in getting walk-ons with this state the 4th largest producer of high school football players who go on to the NFL.

Tim Tucker, sir This list doesn’t tell us a thing, except that half your list are walk-ons.

There are no excuses for what is going on in our football program. Losing to Georgia Tech 42-45, never giving the ball to Knowshon Moreno, just like we didn’t give it to Knowshon against Bama who we should never have lost to either, and like we didn’t give it Knowshon against Florida, whom we were never going to beat. 26 unanswered Tech points, 31 to nothing Bama at the half, and 49-3 Florida. Another 12 arrested and suspended this season, like Coach Richt’s recruits do every single solitary off-season. Our best win is the game we were losing 3-6 at half time in the last game, but Michigan State had no QB and they beat not 1 team ranked in any of the Final Top 25 Polls.

I’m very disappointed that here we are next year year 20 two decades and we have won exactly 3 games against Florida. Don’t give me this injury crap Tim Tucker. These players don’t need any more excuses for the way they are playing football and conducting themselves off the field either. And, this coaching “staff” of Coach Richt’s even now that John Eason is finally gone, is still a damn joke.

Are you kidding me Jon Fabris is still in charge of our Special Ed, er uh I mean Special Teams ?

The signs are everywhere that this coaching “staff” of Coach Richt’s sucks, not the injuries where during the bowl game practices, we have an all out brawl among our own players in practice. Penalties only 4 worse in the nation. This team has no discipline.

Can someone explain to me why coach Felton continues to play Albert Jackson? If a guy doesn’t defend, doesn’t rebound, doesn’t score, then what’s his role? Jeremy Price or Barnes are an inch or so shorter than Jackson, but if you’re going to have a guy just stand aroud, then why not a different guy? I know that Felton’s trying to restore order to a program that was left in shambles by Jim Harrick, but how long must the fans wait for a team that can win more than 14 games in the regular season?

Well, I for one will not see Allen’s departure as anything but an opportunity for Boykin or Cuff,(I seriously doubt that a true freshman will start at that position),to show why they were recruited. That is if they can play the position without committing the penalties. Reshad Jones is the other penalty problem in our secondary, and MUST learn to play agressively without drawing fouls. I believe penalties, lack of turnovers gained, offseason arrests, and of course the injury problems will have to improve. Cox is a senior, and should know this. He needs to be a leader around campus and carry the “stay out of trouble banner”. Only time can fix the injury problem, but all of the others can and must be fixed.

See where Asher Allen is entering the NFL draft. It’s hard to contain my laughter. NONE of the GA DB’s had a clue as to how to play the position, so I suppose he figures he’d better leave before the NFL types figure him out. Last year’s collection of DB’s were lit up so many times they resembled a Christmas tree. Can’t wait to see Allen go one on one with T.Owens. After all, as Jerry Glanville told us “you know what NFL stand for? Not For Long.” The entire GA program needs re-tooling, and these departures make the process easier. Not a bad thing at all.

I’m happy for Asher Allen. Whether it was a good or bad career decision remains to be seen. But he sees the sriting on the wall- there is NOTHING for him to stay for. More of the same. With Martinez & Fabris intact in their jobs, nothing will change. The worst thing that could’ve happened was for the defense to have played so well on the bowl game. As much as I hate to say it, if we had lost, it may have been better- it would have forced Richt’s hand on some staff firings.

Good job Felton. Can’t close the deal on Favors and your team just put up one of the lowest offensive efforts in 50 years. This team is getting worse every game. Felton has shown that he can’t get the team back once it starts going into the tank. I honestly only see about 3-4 wins the rest of the way. The writing is on the wall………the is no reason UGA shouldn’t have a competitive bball program with all our resources.
