UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

AJC > Sports > UGA > Blog > Archives > 2009 > January > 12 > Entry

Polls, stats and such

Six morsels to start the week:

  1. Anybody else surprised by how high Georgia climbed in the final coaches’ poll? From 17th to 10th — that’s quite a move based on a Capital One Bowl victory. Dogs passed Brigham Young, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Boise State and Texas Tech, all of which lost their bowl games. It’s Georgia’s fifth top-10 finish in the coaches’ poll in seven years.

  2. Running back is going to be an interesting position to watch in the NFL draft. One day after Knowshon Moreno said he’s turning pro, Ohio State’s Chris “Beanie” Wells said the same. Still waiting on official word from Pittsburgh’s LeSean McCoy, who is reconsidering his earlier statement that he’d remain in school. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., the dean of draft analysts, told me last month that any of those three underclassmen — Moreno, Wells, McCoy — could be the first (or third) RB taken if all three enter the draft.

  3. Well, we tracked Georgia’s place among the nation’s most penalized teams all season, so we might as well get the final numbers: Georgia finished 115th out of 119 major-college teams in penalty yards with 72.15 per game. That’s better than only USC (72.92), Southern Miss (74.77), TCU (76.92) and Hawaii (78-36). For whatever it’s worth, the five most penalized teams finished with these records: 10-3 (Georgia), 12-1 (USC), 7-6 (Southern Miss), 11-2 (TCU) and 7-7 (Hawaii). The nation’s least-penalized team was Ball State, 26.71 yards per game while going 12-2.

  4. In another stat that dogged Georgia’s defense this season: The Bulldogs finished 72nd among major-college teams in sacks, getting an average of 1.77 per game. No. 71 was Alabama, getting 1.79 sacks per game. No. 1 was Texas, 3.62 per game.

  5. And one more thing that jumps out at me from the final NCAA stats: The teams that played for the BCS title — Oklahoma and Florida — finished the season as the nation’s top two teams in turnover margin. Oklahoma gained 23 more turnovers than it lost, and Florida gained 22 more than it lost. Georgia finished 73rd in turnover margin, losing three more than it gained for the season.

  6. Quoting QB-designate Joe Cox, talking about his fiery, emotional style of play: “Hopefully, if I can transfer that to just a couple of other people on the team, it could spread like wildfire.”

kind of funny how you guys spend so much time saying polls are total crap and to settle things on the field etc, but then like to toss around being a top ten team for the past x # years, and call laugh about being ranked higher than tech, as if that will change what happened on the field this year.

UGA can be a top 10 team next year, if we don’t have key injuries and if Joe Cox is capable of taking over for Stafford and leading the team.

The Defense needs to step up and perform, esp someone on the DE position. Secondary needs to be better, still waiting on someone to emerge as a “fierce head hunting” SS!

Kicking game needs work, both field goals and kick offs were less than stellar and we were used to having a kicker that can do both who got drafted in the 7th round to the Seattle Seahawks last NFL draft.

I expect our skill positions to be OK. AJ, Moore, Durham, (interesting to see what King) will bring to the table as well. Running back is OK, someone needs to emerge as our 2 down back, Samuel (depending on how things go) could be asked to switch positions. He seems to play with passion energy and a full head of steam and is a beast for being 18-19 years old. We have need at LB, it’s not a move (if he wants) that is out of the question.

TE another question mark. Aaron White doesn’t look like he can be a “blocking and passing TE”, size is limited. Although pass catching he showed he’s got good hands. Maybe he bulks up a bit more and learns how to block consistantly so he can be our #1 TE.

The Talent will be there in 2009 for CMR and staff to have another 10 win team, anything beyond that it’ll be a bonus.

UGA will be a repeat of 2008. Cox will be as good as Stafford Stat wise. Running back production will be down some. The Defense will be a little better, But not a difference maker record wise. Special teams will still be average or below. We will beat the usual suspects but look bad doing it. We will lose to Florida. LSU at home is winnable, and TECH should be a win. 10-2 , top 10 and ALL happy in Athens. 2010 gotta shot at taking the gators. Big, big, 325 pound Junior line and pound the rock and control the clock. Go Dawgs. We will have a QB with NO EXPERIENCE IN 2010, but he will have the best line in recent memory.

ha: take a look at Sagarin, the poll you trade schoolers counted on so much this year to prove your dominance and the SEC’s decline. acc no longer 1st (or even 2nd), gt 36th - the 8th best acc team behind even clemmons and miami.

SEC #1 in Sagarin, and with 6-2 bowl record, SEC didn’t even begin playing bowls ‘til the acc was practically finished. Says something about the quality of bowls in which the acc went 4-6. Very strong.

In the AP and USA Today Coaches’ polls, gt is only the 6th best 9-4 team - barely remaining in the top 25. Less than 11 months to enjoy your aberrative win over the Dawgs. Truly embarrassing to lose to such a delusional program, so don’t expect it again anytime soon.

georgia will be improved in many facets in 2009.

the qb will be fine with a more accurate passer in joe cox, running back not as good, but a much improve o/line might help that position.

defense will be much better with more depth and younger guys available at defensive end, linebacker and d back. defensive tackle will be much improve with key injured players returning.

this good be a very good georgia team who could compete for the SEC.

I agree with, and like what Cox, has to say about his personality.

That type of inner fire is what UGA missed this season for sure.

An inner fire in a QB is a tremendous asset. Just look at Tebow.

Of course, you have to be good also, but I think Joe has the ability to be good.

Tim - I questioned in another column about AJ Harmon. Where do you see him playing next year?

I know coming in he was on the D-line, but over the course of the year wasn’t he moved back over to O-line where he played in highschool? If so, will he stay there?

I think Stafford had some fire, but the 2008 team lacked a lot of intangibles. An improved O-line and better D (Willie Martinez has to produce next year or else) in 2009 means that the Dawgs should be better able to handle a tough schedule. The lack of any preseason hype also won’t hurt matters. Last season’s squad attempted to coast through nearly every game. It takes more than talent to win in the SEC. I hope the returning players will take that lesson to heart next season.

Tebow just found the cure for cancer, and it’s in his tears - DEVELOPING.

Joe Cox is going to be a lot better than people think. He NEVER lost a game in high school at a very high profile school (Independence in Charlotte, NC.) and each time he has come into a game, he has done well in a reseve roll. O-line will be much improved. Skill players are all very good. Defense will (have to) be improved.

Every year brings a whole new dynamic to college football. I can’t wait for it to start all over again.

Correction on the poll stats!

UGA has actually finished in the top 10 of the coaches poll SIX times in the last seven years. That would 2002 3rd, 2003 6th, 2004 6th, 2005 10th, 2007 3rd, and 2008 10th. It is the AP poll that would only five out of seven.

You seem to forget that UF has down years also. And to the trailer park? you have got to be trying your hand at irony. Next time you go to a Ga-Fla game notice the attire of the two fan clubs and how much they differ. It isn’t the Ga fans I would say came from the trailer park! You have to beat a team more than 1 year in a row to claim to own them. It’s been 4 days now since UF won it’s time to sober up.

CMR knows he needs to totally revamp his special teams. People can say want they want about our D but most of the time the special teams unit put our backs against the wall. We have to find a kicker who can kick the damn ball into the endzone after a big UGA TD in order to keep momentum. Then we have to find a playmaker who can return punts and kickoffs. I loved what kid who returned that kick against Bama. Then we never saw him again. Coach Fabris puzzles me at best.

OK infantile Tech nerds…gather ‘round and listen to ya daddy. When are you pointed heads gonna realize that the “once in a decade” win over UGA was a fluke of historic proportions? We hung 42 on you and our defense stayed in the dorm. Surely, the LSU game made it painfully obvious that you guys are not ready for “prime time, big daddy SEC caliber football”. As I have said in this space before…. back out the FSU brainfart goal line fumble and UGA’s 2nd half, defensive vacation, and you guys are a “run of the mill” 7-6 team. Coach Paula Johnson is a very decent head coach, (though now grossly overpaid for his ability grade) but the triple fumble offense will always put the ball on the ground against fast, well-schemed defenses. Paula can out-coach the Academies….but he is outmatched against the beasts of the SEC. And lets face it, the half full high school stadium is hardly an intimidating place for opponents to fear. In fact, opponents come into your place with a swagger because it reminds them of when they were high school superstars.Let me give you 5 most certain automatic losses on your schedule next year……BC, Clemson, VT, FSU, and of course….a severe embarrassing vengeful drubbing by UGA in the high school stadium. Throw in a few more triple fumbles, and I’m telling you 7-6 is wishful thinking. Remember, ya daddy told ya so.

MIAMI (SP) — Shortly after leading the Florida Gators to a national championship with a 24-14 win over Oklahoma, junior quarterback Tim Tebow announced that he would skip his senior season and ascend directly into heaven.

Tebow entered the press room to wild applause. A reporter for a 24-hour cable sports network burst into tears when the 2007 Heisman winner entered the room. Another threw a pair of boxer shorts on the podium. Tebow smiled at the gesture and several sports reporters fainted.

“Sorry I’m late,” Tebow began. “There was a six-year-old boy with cancer in row 54 and I had to make my way through the crowd to heal him.”

“I want to start by saying that playing quarterback for the University of Florida, winning two national championships, has been a great honor. There has been some speculation about my future and I want to clear that up right now,” he continued.

“Don’t go, Tim!” a reporter shouted from the back of the room.

“After much consideration, I have decided to skip my senior season at the University of Florida and ascend directly into Heaven,” Tebow announced. Upon making the announcement, Tebow was bathed in a blinding white light and vanished.

In response to the news, ESPN announced they will have a month-long tribute to Tebow. ESPN2 will now be known as ESPN-TEBOW and will feature Tebow highlights (including home videos of Tebow’s childhood), re-airings of past interviews, Tebow-centric analysis by ESPN air personalities, a Tebow quiz show and a reality show to find the “most Tebow-like” person in America.

“He wasn’t just the greatest player in college football history,” said a college football writer at the press conference, tears streaming down his face. “He might have been the greatest person to ever walk on earth.”

Nice try, anyway. Some of these UGA fans drive me crazy, too!

The main thing is that UGA was ranked higher then Tech in the final polls, just as I had predicted. Tech had a good year that only became “great” when they beat UGA by 3 points and went and bought rings to celebrate. LSU, a middle-of-the-SEC team (this year) came to town and throttled Tech, with a freshman QB and now all the Techies can do is bad mouth anything UGA, including future players and recruits considering UGA. Pathetic is as pathetic does!

Georgia will be better off next year without Stafford and Moreno. There is no question of their talent, but they were not team players. 256-160 Ha,ha,ha,ha…good to see you’re still laughing. I am too!!

How pathetic to celebrate so much, so long for a 3 point victory in 8 tries. Ha,ha,ha,ha!!

How long do you think LSU celebrated their 35 point victory? Not long, because they’ve “been there before”. It’s fairly obvious you’ve not “been there” in quite a while.

Keep laughing!

Only reason Tebow is coming back to play another year is because he wasnt going to be selected in the first or second round of the draft. The dude will never be a every down quarterback in the NFL. Whereever he goes next year I guarntee he plays either T.E. or fullback also.

Georgia is lookin good for the future. With the committ from Aaron Murry from none other than Fla. and some other key guys coming in as well they should be in good shape for 2009 and beyond. I’m taking Georgia with the bye week to beat the Gators, but the start of the schedule looks brutal.

Gator Fans: Yes, UF is on top of the world. Heartiest congrats!

No team stays on top forever though (even with Urban the father, Timmy the son and Mr. 2 bits, the holy spirit). Your non-stop gloatfest is gonna make for a very ugly landing when you fall.

I’m sure you guys will buy into the pre-season hype and strut around talking $hit all year. Might be wise to remember that this stuff rarely works as predicted. A little humility never hurt anyone.

Help us not regret that most of your SEC bretheren pulled for you guys in the title game. Be proud of your team. Have fun. Quit rubbing your $hit in everybody’s face.

That is all.

So, Spurrier was banned from the Tucker campus? Efforts like the one put forth against Iowa may get SOS banned in a lot of places, including Columbia. It’s not like Florida at all, is it Coach? Can you imagine the howls of protest if the Gator’s HC was banned from a High School? South Carolina’s HC is banned and it barely creates a ripple. My how the mighty have fallen!

You know Donnan started his demise when he crowned Quincy the king of qb’s. Richt and BooBoo are already bestowing the starting job on Cox when he has all this talent coming in a qb and Gray is no slouch. Pete Carroll tells all his players no matter what their class the best man is going to start. Why doesn’t Richt do the same?? He should throw the job open and find out just who is the best. I don’t know why I even suggest this because it isn’t going to happen (as usual)

Hope all you losers remember to read my new book coming soon, “Urban’s Way or the F*ing Highway, Loser!” - Even more grotesquely pompous than my last book.

All the rest of you fans need to ask yourself, “Who wouldn’t want to be a freaking Gator?” Just remember whatever recruits you get came from the UF slag heap. You’re recruits don’t deserve to live because they were to hopelessly stupid to want to come to UF.

Just remember I am #1. All others are #2 or lower. When you look at a map of the US and notice the shape of the state of FL, just remember mine is bigger!!

Well, Mr. Tim Tucker sir,

That does not begin to tell the whole story of Polls, stats and such…Now, does it, sir ?

Total Offense, NCAA Number 22 UGA.

Total Defense, NCAA Number 22 UGA.

No. 13 Final AP Poll to Tech at Number 22, and for the 8th Consecutive Season, then, UGA is HIGHER RANKED THAN TECH in the Final AP Poll.

Again.

I just think your numbers and stats, etc. herein presented do not tell the whole story.

UGA ended Number 4 Official NCAA Strength of Schedule.

The Coaches’ Poll is called the USA Today Coaches’ Poll as presented herein.

Whereas, the Grantland Rice Trophy is the Final AP Poll, instead.

You know Tim Tucker, the Poll you used to be able to VOTE FOR yourself ?

There are 4 SEC teams in the Final AP Poll Top 14 and zero ACC teams.

You newswriters here at the AJ-C told us how much better Tech was doing than UGA.

You told us how much better the Big XII than The SEC.

SEC 3rd Consecutive AP Poll National Championship.

SEC 6 Bowl Wins.

ACC 6 Bowl Losses.

ACC and Big 10 tied with 6 Bowl Losses, as most in the nation.

Vandie beat Boston College.

LSU killed Georgia Tech.

Ole Miss slaughtered Texas Tech.

Kentucky beat East Carolina.

UGA beat Michigan State.

The Big XII chose Oklahoma over Texas, when Texas beat Oklahoma and when NO POLL HAS OKLAHOMA HIGHER RANKED THAN TEXAS.

Matthew Stafford had 18 fumbles in 39 games here and 33 Interceptions to his only 51 TD Passes.

Oh, yeah.

And, for War Eagle Auburn was not ranked ahead of UGA in the Final Polls 6 of the 8 years of the Coach Richt Era and 3 of those 6 years, Auburn is not ranked at all.

Nada.

UGA had 3 Losses all to Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.

Tech had 3 Losses which were not to Final AP Poll Top 25 teams (and 1 more for good measure to a team who was ranked.)

Tebobama - definition - non-fatal disease caused by two airborne bacteria. Disease is most likely passed to host while watching broadcasts of ESPN, ESPN2, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, MSNBC, The View. The two bacteria, ‘Tim Tebowcus’ and ‘Barack Obamus’ work in tandem by disrupting the host’s “mental state” causing said host to become delusional with visions of walking on water, the sky becoming a more brilliant shade of blue and unicorns running gayly through a meadow full of lilacs and gerber daisies.

Tebow didn’t just find the cure for cancer. He found the cure for cancer when he was a freshman, He was just waiting till after his Jr. year to announce his findings. The FDA & the AMA get be such a pain sometimes with all their silly rules. Next project; water into wine, with an option on fire and brimstone as an alternative fuel for cars. Can’t wait till he gets his degree, he will really show us how its done.

Hey joe taxpayer …. here is a fact for ya to think rationally about… it is Tebow not Teabow, they have 3 NCs, not 5 and 3 heisman trophy winners not 2. how ironic that you say to look at the facts! Also, UGA has 5 SEC championships in the last 28 years not 2. We also have more 10 win seasons in the past 8 years than anyone in the NCAA except USC which is pretty hard for an “average” team to do especially in the SEC.

OK 5 in football still average.2 in 25 years. Even worse proves my point even more. The bigger question is why can’t we be a national program. I want the dogs to live up to there potenial. We can split hairs on history but outside of the state and espically the south; Ga. is a nobody and we have the talent and resources. Lets not be thin skin lets identify the problem and fix it. Lets tip our hat to Fla. and beat their a$$ next year. At some time even a great DAWGS fan like you will begin to get weary of underacheiving. Yes, come fall I will be there on Saturdays, wearing my red and black, however I want my school to live up to its potenial.

VOR 3 in football and 2 in mens basketball 3 plus 2 equals 5 OK 3 Heisman winners again that makes my argument even better. You sound like Tech w/there rings. How much more would we have if we could just beat Fla. Buy the players some rings w/10 win seasons in the past 8 years on the sides. I want Ga. as the gold standard of college football because they can be.

thanks Munson 2 in 26 years I said 2 in 25 years. All of you history buffs out there If you reverse the GA-Fla. rivarly records for the past 8 years how many more SEC rings would the players have had to sell on e-bay. Also, how many MNC games would we has played in. Just kidding about the e-bay thing and I will not compare arrests records between the 2 schools. My point I am trying to make on the past 5 blogs is Fla. is between us and greatness. IMHO We must turn the rivarly around. We are close, we are 1 team away. That team is Fla. That is the problem. How do we fix it?

By Voice of Reason

January 13, 2009 2:29 PM | Link to this

Joe you make good points on wanting to take it to the next step but you can’t be ready to get rid of what has gotten us this far because it has yet to get us to the next level. We definatly need better showings vs.FLa and defniatly need a NC but we are much closer than we have been for YEARS so we need to wait it out and to use a line from our soon-to-be former president “stay the course”. I think a tweak here and there is needed but Richt is the one to take us there.

By joe taxpayer

January 13, 2009 2:42 PM | Link to this

VOR right on about CMR. but I do wish he would run a tighter ship. What type of recurits do we need to beat Fla. I say a big physical O and D line. I believe right or wrong we must recurit certain type of players to beat Fla. Our offensive and defensive scheme must be geared to beat Fla. What tweaks would you like to see.

By dan

January 13, 2009 2:53 PM | Link to this

I think this team needs to get back to basics because essentially they are starting from scratch. The nice thing about next season is that there won’t be any over-hyped expectations so the Dawgs can just go out there and play. Richt and company need to assess what made them successful during their run between 2002-2005 and what has not made successful like in parts of 2006 and 2008. Some of it is pretty obvious( defense and special teams etc.), but some of it might not be. Sometimes when you become successful over a period of time, you tend to improvise and get away from the things that got you there. I think this is true for the Dawgs as it is for many of us. We have all seen what can happen with a team like the Falcons when they got back to basics. The same can be true for the Dawgs.

By Voice of Reason

January 13, 2009 3:03 PM | Link to this

Mainly I agree with the assessment of the lines. In SEC football, and in beating UF, it all starts and end with the O and D lines. The SEC is loaded with speed and skill at the skill position but the difference comes at the lines. Build them up. Another thing that we have been lacking is fire. When you watch Tebow on the sidelines it is liking watching tape of David Pollack when he led our team with fire and intensity. It isn’t how much talent you have but how well you play as a team and how bad you want it. I want guys not only with talent but with the mindset to play every down, to never take a play off and to not rely on someone else to make the play. IMO that is where UGA goes from good to great.

By joe taxpayer

GratefulDawg, apology accepted. I am excited about next season, also. I think Joe Cox is great. I hope to see a real team gel and not a superstar hype fest. I also agree with the above sentiment expressed by many that the key is really fundamentals. Especially, playing the option… it is all about discipline and fundamentals.
