UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

How does UF title affect Dogs?

Well, I’m sure most of you saw it. I watched almost every play. The Florida Gators are national champions for the second time in three years. Beat Oklahoma 24-14 this time. Congratulations.

I thought it was a great game. Well, maybe not great but definitely entertaining. Some great plays were made, most of them by the Gators. Of course there was a tidal wave of praise and credit being heaped on quarterback Tim Tebow (comparing him to Lincoln and JFK during the telecast was a little much for me, though) and he certainly played well, at least after the early interceptions. But to me I’ve always thought Percy Harvin was the biggest difference-maker on that team. And he wasn’t even 100 percent healthy in the game.

So how do Dawgs’ fans feel about Florida’s latest accomplishment? Usually there’s a good bit of conference loyalty in such matchups. I remember last year a bunch of Georgia folks saying they were rooting for LSU because it’s in the SEC. But most of the Bulldog backers I talked to this week said they were pulling for the Sooners.

But forgetting personal feelings, what tangible effects do you think another Florida title might have on Georgia? With the Gators residing in the same division, does this make it even more difficult for the Dogs to get past them to the promised land? Or since they are Georgia’s chief rival, does it simply raise the bar for the Dogs as well and put them that much closer should they manage to get by Florida in Jacksonville?

I’ll say this: Florida doesn’t appear to have peaked. It is slated to return 19 of 22 starters off this team — most notably Tebow of course. There’s a good chance that’ll shrink to 17 of 22 if Harvin and LB Brandon Spikes jump to the NFL as expected. Most seem to think Tebow will definitely be back. He said after the game, “nothing but good could come from it.”

The Bulldog Nation might disagree.

Gary was War Damn Eagle wasn’t he with Brando. Good grief. Brave over the phone, just like alot of the fellow bloggers. Brave behind the keyboard.

Anyway, went to bed 3rd quarter 9 minute mark and the score was 7-7. The last quarter and a half might have been great, but what I saw was just decent football being played. The rust from the layoff was apparent. Glad the Gaotrs won for the SEC however.

First of all, I simply cannot pull for Florida.

As for the effect on the Dawgs, who knows. UGA may lose a recruit or two, they may not.

What I do know is that it is Florida’s MOXY that effects Georgia.

Florida’s approach is on par with high levels of success.

When they have the ability, Florida flats gets after it and stays after it; end of story.

We’ll just see what the future holds for Georgia. It’ll be good, maybe great someday, maybe not.

I am a UGA alumnus. For the first few years I was pleased with the results Richt was bringing to the university.

However, I have come to the conclusion that he just cannot bring home a championship. He’s a good man. That’s great. But frankly, he is just not getting it done.

Part of me was pulling for the Sooners to win. Why? I’m tired of all the Tebow talk and Florida talk. Tebow in my opinion is the single greatest college football player - at least that I have seen.

Fla has won 2 NC so far with him there. He has won the Heisman. And if he returns next season, who is going to stop Fla from winning it all again?

The part of me that was rooting for Fla did so because I thought it would add additional pressure to Richt and Evans. I think this school can achieve more and perform better. I just think Richt cannot deliver on those orders.

And I don’t see how UGA will have a good season in 09. I’m not impressed with Cox. His great accolade - he helped bring the team back to win a game against Colorado a couple of seasons ago. If he is so great, then why did he not push Stafford for any playing time?

The o-line might be good. The defense returns a lot of people, but WM will find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Evans needs to begin to take a very strong look at Richt and his ability to deliver. I’m not content with SEC East Division championships. I’m not satisfied with SEC Championships.

The ability to get the talent to win National Championships is there. The coaching so far has shown it is nowhere near capable of delivering a championship.

What do you come away with watching Florida play and the Dawgs play…..I’ll tell you……The ole saying is still true. Defense wins Championships. OU scored 14 points. CMR better wake up and look at HIS BEST FRIEND running his defense. He’s over his head !

The only way UF’s title could affect us is recruiting, though we still seem to get top-ten classes year after year, regardless. Unfortunately, we just can’t seem mold these stars into a great “team”. Urban Myer seems to have the formula, though. Sadly…

From what I saw watching the game last night Florida is not un-beatable, however if you’re to do so you had better eat your Wheaties in the morning. If Harvin & Spikes leaves I believe it will help the Dogs hopes of winning in J-ville next year, but not by much.

First off Congrats to the Gator fans out there. You guys had a great season and should be very proud of your team. They played very well last night.

-I don’t think it affects UGA on the field or during a game with them. Whether the Gators win it all for 5 years in a row or lose for 5 years in a row we still have to play them no matter what they do. I think it affects recruting more than anything. Kids see a winner and wantt o play for a winner no matter if it is UTAH or UF or Troy.

It has been hard to get past UF for the last 20 years. In that time frame we have won like 3 games. So the other 17 times UF didn’t win the title all 17 times….so I don’t think it matters if they win it all or not. UF pretty much owns us in head to head match ups for the last 2 decades whether they are national champs or not….proof is in the pudding.

-Oh yeah and UGA might look at UF as our “chief rival” but in reality it is a rivalry game….but it isn’t. AU is mroe of an actual “rivalry game” considering what happens and how that series is so close for the last 100 years and year in and year out. UGA has to put up or shut up agaisnt UF for the next 3-5 years if we really can put a Rivalry title on that game. It;s a rivalry game in the sense of Border war of the states…..recruting…..and over all dislike for the most part of one anothers fans or schools. But for themsot part for UGA for it;s fans to deeply consider UF a rival we have to win on a lot more consistant basis in my opinion.

-So no I don’t think it affects UGA players so to say…..no matter who wins it all we still lace it up in Jacksonville every year.

AS ALways GOOOO DAWGS….and get Ried signed!!!!!!!!

Can we get Damon Evans to sell his soul to the devil? I have no idea who did it in Gainesville, but they managed to take a historically irrellevant program and give them 20 years of incredible success.

Also, note that every time you drink a Gatorade you are directly contributing to UF’s success. It is no coincidence that UF was irrellevant until 1985, when the first “Gatorade shower” was given to Bill Parcells and the drink took off. Michael Jordan also did not hurt.

TEN PERCENT of the royalties from every Gatorade sold go directly to UF. The rest goes to the families of the four scientists who invented the drink, and there is no telling how much money they have donated. The tally from Gatorade to UF is around $400 million and counting.

Do us a favor and never buy another Gatorade.

The only effect this will have on UGA is that now our fans will whine even more, if that is even possible. The logic will go something like this: Because Meyer has won national titles that means that Richt can’t. I’m not sure what kind of sense this makes but you can’t talk much sense in to a bandwagon whiner.

Congrats to Florida. 2 out of 3 is very impressive. But this does not effect UGA at all. If Florida wants another title they will have to earn it just like everybody else. The slate will be wiped clean at the first kick off of the 2009 season. Every season stands on its own.

From a fan standpoint though I do think it is hard for our fans watching all these SEC teams have great seasons while we sit on the sidelines. Richt has had only one truly great season in 2002, and that is starting to feel like eons ago. Since then LSU and Florida have combined for 4 national titles and Auburn had an undefeated season. Our fans are asking “Why not us?” We have competed with these teams. We have beaten the best best programs the SEC has to offer, so why not us? I think its time for Richt & Co. to ask the same question. I don’t know if they have done that. I still have faith in him though. Richt will get his title one day. I truly believe it.

UGA has a chance against UF next year. Follow this scenario. The offensive coordinator takes the Ole Miss job (done). The defensive coordinator, Charlie Strong, one of the best in the business takes a pro job. Urban Meyer, instead of finding top notch replacements, gives the two jobs to weaker coaches on his staff - maybe one is an old college roommate. UGA would have a good chance then. The playing field would be even finally.

Gradygrad96? Aside from Florida, exactly what is Mark Richt NOT getting done? Did you drink the kool-aid this year and actually think we were the best team in the nation? Come on! Florida is having a spectacular run right now…congrats to them. But my gosh, who do you suggest we hire? Urban Meyer? Oh wait the Patriots will probably let us have Belichik! Or wait even better, maybe we can hold a seance and let Bear Bryant coach our boys to victory through mystical spirits! Yeah, and maybe Tebow will transfer to UGA too! And Herschel has his senior year left!
Man, get real. We happen to be playing in a conference that produces NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP quality teams! If its not Florida, its LSU. if its not LSU its UT, if its not UT its Bama…AND WE ARE ON THAT LIST TOO!!!! Yes, we underacheived in many peoples minds, but only because we lost to the dorks. Had we gone 11-2 instead of 10-3 there would be a lot less whining!
Mark Richt is the best chance we have had in 30 years to win! Tebow is to Meyer what Herschel was to Dooley. Once Tebow leaves the Gators will drop off a little (not completely).
JUST REMEMBER, WE BEAT THEM LAST YEAR…with Mark Richt!

Congrats to the Gators again on a well played game. I hope Urban handed his tissues over to Stoops to wipe his crying eyes. The victory doesn’t do anything to us or for us. We still have to beat UF in order to get there. Pretty talented group they have. OK’s defense wasn’t highly rated coming into the game and they did pretty well for the first three quarters. Harvin is gone. He cannot be replaced. Any team is beatable on any given Saturday. Recruiting won’t matter a whole lot, we do well and you can only field 11 players on any given play.

For you people calling for Richt’s job and doubting his ability to “get us there” are just plain crazy. He is the reason we are doing as well as we are. He is the reason we are recruiting so well and retaining a great recruiting and coaching staff. Don’t think Richt doesn’t know how to get it done, he does, and he will. He was part of all those great FSU teams and don’t forget his time on the great Miami teams of the 80’s. So just chill out and let the man do his job. Wining 82 games in 8 years is a hell of a lot better than the previous 20 years.

And I agree with the first poster. Fox’s coverage was horrible. Can’t they get Aikman and Buck to do the game? That might have been better. Almost as bad a Pat Summerall on the Cotton Bowl. He was good in his day but that day past a long time ago.

GradyGrad, I couldn’t agree more about your assessment of Richt. He is a good coach and an even better person but he will never lead UGA to a national championship. The telling sign about the program for me is the fact that neither of our coordinators are getting interviewed or even mentioned for other jobs. Look at Oklahoma, Texas, USC, and Florida…they lose coordinators all the time but continue to find replacements and stay successful. Richt’s loyalty to below average coordinators is killing this program. Until he realizes the name of the game is winning championships and not hanging out with your friends, we will be played second fiddle to the truly powerful football programs.

As far as the game last night, the announcers were absolutely horrible. Brennanmen couldn’t keep up with the downs and Davis just kept saying that Florida would blitz, hoping at least once every few plays he would be right. And the continuous fawning over Tebow was sickening. Yes, he is a great player but so is Harvin and Bradford…and they seem to be just as good of people, just don’t do all the publicity grabbing things Tebow does. When Tebow got the penalty at the end of the game, it showed his true colors and the announcers, of course, swept it under the rug as just having fun. If an OU player had done something similar, the announcers would have ridiculed him. Just look at how the OU player was called out for supposedly twisting the ankle of Harvin. That kind of thing happens on just about every play but because Harvin is a Gator and had a hurt ankle, the announcers pointed it out. How about pointing out Spikes continued thuggery and every Florida player acting like a punk. They are a great team but have no class. Starts at the top with the classless coach and staff. Winning is great but being a-holes isn’t the way to go about it.

Congrats to Florida and all the Gator fans out there. I respectfully disagree with an earlier poster who felt that it was merely good football being played last night…it looked to me like both teams were so insanely fast that they were offsetting each other. Tebow appeared shocked (early on, that is) by the team speed of Oklahoma’s defense. That OK QB has a freaking cannon of an arm. Percy Harvin is a freak, plain and simple. UGA has to get faster, tougher and a LOT more disciplined if they plan to match Florida. IMHO, as always…

…really young if you think the sales of Gatorade took off after 1985. I am sure you have seen the ads referring to the invention of the drink back in 1966 - 67 with the “ol’ head ball coach” at QB. Sales were terrific since the inception of the drink, and progressed from the involvement of “His Airness” and others. While the showering of Parcells may have been the first time that was done, it had nothing to do with the sales increasing.

Back to the game - I agree that UF looked strong and will be strong next year. Their freakin’ defense started 2 jrs. and the rest sophs and freshmen - unbelievable. The Dawgs and everyone else is are in trouble, but no team is unbeatable “on any given Saturday”. Here’s hoping that the last Saturday in October or first Saturday in November is one of those days!

Fox’s coverage was horrid. I thought about trying to find the game on radio and turning the TV down. Thankfully the SEC is on Raycom and ESPN. The BCS can not move to ESPN soon enough.

Richt can get it done but has not had the luck. The first SEC title team was just not lucky enough to get in with one loss like other SEC national champs. Shockley may have won it if he was not injured. It took time for many great coaches to win it all. The program is strong.

Gardy Gard makes some valid points.

Grady? - “Yes, we underacheived in many peoples minds, but only because we lost to the dorks.”

that’s exactly why Vince Dooley was so beloved. He usually beat the Gators.

If we lose to Florida in 2009, that makes Richt 2-7. this game should mean more to a miami grad, a former FSU offensive coordinator, and a UGA coach.

and speaking of Miami…look for them to be scary good in two years.

i am not advocating Richt’s dismissal but the conversation builds momentum unless he turns this Florida series around to 50%.

it may not be in the cards for Richt. just accept it and move on b/c he ain’t going anywhere. he will always have a job at UGA as long as he wants one.

When I was at Georgia we owned Florida and now thy own us. I hate’em but they are good. Tim Tebow is the best overall college football player I have ever seen. I can’t wait till he is gone. Congrats Florida on another SEC National Championship-3 in a row.

I always pull for the SEC no matter what. It is, in my opinion, the toughest conference to play in year in and year out. Even in a down year for the conference it is still dominant. Look at wins and losses vs other conferences, bowl victories and National Championship.

As someone said earlier, each year stands alone and this Florida win really doesn’t affect Georgia or any other program.

It will continue (evidently) to be in the minds of Dawg players that fla is superior and the game is lost before it is played…that is how it looks every year. Second verse same as the first…

The difference in teams was evident on the first play of the game last night… the fla safety came over and just laid out the sooner receiver, just a viscious hit. First, the current UGA secondary does not hit or cover like that, Second, UGA would have been flagged (rightfully) for pass interference. The fla team plays hard and gets some breaks because of their rep, UGA has been playing soft and getting no breaks because of theirs…

I thought the announcer saying that was the only thing Tebow had ever done wrong in his life was pretty sad. I hope that kid stays right, he is extremely impressive but there is a TON of pressure on him to be a saint.

How does UF title affect the Dogs?

It means that we have a nice little program that will forever be in the shadows of the Gators. There is not one player or coach on our team that haves the drive, determination and will of Tebow and Meyer.

Chip,

As a season ticket holder since 1972, I hate the Gators, I detest Tech and Auburn is just obnoxious. I do pull for the rest of the SEC when they play out of conference. Living in ATL, I used to hate Tech more than Fla, but they became irrelavant when they joined the basketball conference. Fla fans have short memories and think they have only been playing football since 1990. However, give them credit, they have been playing really good.

UGA is 21-5 they last two years and Fla is 22-5. We are 1-1 with the Gators and Tebow. Maybe in the next two years we can get a break, make a couple of plays at the right time and get a chance to play for a big game.

I plan on keeping my tickets for a few more years and then turn them over to my son, when he graduates from UGA. It has been great to be a Georgia Bulldog and the program is in the best shape since the ’80s.

Go Dawgs!!!

How is pointing out that Tebow acted like a punk sour grapes or being a whiner? He gets entirely too much publicity for what he does. There are many other college athletes who do similar things but the difference is they don’t drag an ESPN crew along with them. He is a great player but the constant St. Tebow commentary is annoying.

As a UGA fan i couldnt pull for UF either, even though I am loyal to the SEC, and its not even the Gators its the smug Urban Meyer whom I can’t stand. I hate his attitude.

With that being said the bad news for UGA is that Tim Tebow is one of the best college football players ever. I hate saying it but is the truth. However, the good news is we only have one more year to deal with him and have had just as good of recruiting class as they have the past 4 years. Once Tebow leaves UF will be good, but not dominant and UGA has always had good QB’s since Richt has been head coach. Joe Cox will be fine next year and the Aaron Murray or Zach Mettenberger will take over for 2 or 3 years. UGA will be fine

Chip, I was rooting for UF. I want the SEC to dominate so that, if nothing else, I can tell my ACC/Big10 fans up here in NC that we play in the best conference, hands down.

UF winning only helps us. Sure, they may get an extra recruit or two…but so do we. We steal them from other conference by saying you can play AGAINST top teams!

And anyone displeased with CMR, go and root for the other 8 teams in the SEC who do not win Nat’l Champs often. I, for one, would LOVE to win the MNC. But, I am also very content winning the SEC and taking my chances with the BCS. Winning the SEC is a phenomenal occomplishment.

Chip, I agree about FOX hyping Tebow by the end of the game I was SICK of the Saint Tebow talk! Sure he’s a great kid & while I appreciate his commitment to mission work let’s be fair about it. He plays for a coach & team that is the polar opposite of that! He’s committed minor recruiting violations in the past by making illegal cell phone calls & those occasional taunts in games aren’t very Christian like. I’m sure the kid is a good Christian & person but like the rest of us he’s human so a Saint he ain’t! It’s interesting how the media usually plays up the negative but in this case all we get is good but no balance & fair reporting. I guess compared to typical thugness we see in a lot of the athletes today he is a saint lol but the kid ain’t perfect & Urban Myer isn’t God!

On how this affects UGA…I love CMR & think he’s the right man for the job. However as I’ve stated in the past if he keeps losing to FL & Tech he’ll be in trouble with the Hartman Foundation folks soon. If FL keeps beating us & winning NC’s that’s going to add to the frustration. Mark Bradley wrote about how UGA may be more of team next year since they won’t be waiting on Stafford & Moreno to make big plays. That brings up an issue that CMR needs to deal with. How it is that FL, TX, USC & others are loaded with stars but still play as a team, yet UGA did not?!? So some changes are needed:

-The off field disciple issues must stop: I’m to the point where maybe we need to kick a kid off the team just to make a point! I don’t care if we’ve got to lock them up in their dorm rooms. Just keep them out of the blotter! To me the players should get it: you’ve got a free ride so don’t screw it up!

-Whatever the problem is on D must be addressed: To me you adjust to your talent & have schemes varied & flexible enough to do that. We did that in 07 but in 08 we tried a few tweaks but mostly went vanilla. CWM loves the Tampa 2 but pro teams that run it don’t stay it all game long! We need more packages & the ability to go to one as a base D if our talent &\or injuries dictate that. Like this year on the line we could have gone to 3 DL’s but there wasn’t enough healthy db’s & lb’s to go 3-3-5 or 3-4 full time. Unless you have superior talent all over the field it’s hard to just play base vanilla D against teams with complex schemes. If the issues were just due to all the injuries then things should improve in 09 however if some of it is schematic then that needs to be addressed! Rather or not it’s CWM is Richt’s call but whatever the prob is just GET IT FIXED!!!

-Tweak the O: I LOVE OK’s offense as well as the way both teams used their TE’s & FB’s. Shaun Chapas, Aaron White fit that TE\FB mold (if we get Orson Charles he does as well) so maybe we are going more towards that. I was happy to see the no huddle hurry up in the bowl game but would like to see it more often if not most of the time. The reason I like OK’s O is because they go spread one play then to the conventional I the next all while in a hurry up no huddle. Much like UGA did when CMR first got here. I could see where a with a few tweaks our O could be ran more like OK or Missouri’s while keeping the power O & substitution elements we have now. Cox could run that type of O then the when Gray or Murray take over you’ll be able to add in some option elements to the spread packages. However if Metenburg won the job then you keep the spread packages as mainly passing based.

-Special Teams: Which used to be strength was a major weakness this year…I loved it when CMR said we’d find a kicker to kick it out of the end zone on kickoffs if he’s not on campus so it sounds like we’ll get those issues addressed From CMR post season PC it sounds like there open to schematic changes so hopefully we’ll see some!

As much as we hate Florida, you simply have to give credit where credit is due. Urban Meyer has proved to be a masterful, top-notch coach. period. He has won 2 national titles in 3 years. His main reason for success has been Tebow.

Hate to admit it, but Tebow is simply one of the best college football players to ever play the game. He is a true leader that demands perfection from his teammates. He may not do jack in the pros, but he will go down as one of the greatest in history. As mentioned by many other bloggers, there just on an unbeliavable run right now. All the credit in the world goes to Meyer and Tebow, because they have won more national championships in 3 years than Spurrier did in 12-13.

Here’s the reason we haven’t played for a national title in 28 years: we can’t beat tennessee and florida in the same year. If we beat both of them and win the SEC we’re in. Great coaches go decades without winning national titles, look how many titles Paterno and Bowden have.

I think Richt will get one for us eventually and think Florida will drop off a little once Tebow leaves.

i dont understand why nobody thinks uga will have a decent season next season i mean we have trindon holliday typoe player on our roster named carlton thomas plus were getting one awesome running back in washaun ealey then we richard samuel & caleb king they will develop in spring practice i promise that. Cox should have been the starter from the start stafford had the arm but not the intelligence that cox, plus we have the whole offensive line coming back prolly the next 2 or 3 years(depending if someone leaves for the draft) only thing we should be working on is the receiving corp. we have aj green & maybe tavarres king but we dont know how he’ll respond but just give uga a chance people there gonna surprise a bunch of people next year. Congrats to the Gators. The way they played with such fire and purpose should be the blueprint every college coach follows. Unfortunately, I agree with the previous comments about “Mr. Nice Guy”, Mark Richt. The Dawgs don’t have the nasty demeanor to follow through. Richt tried to be a badass with the end zone celebration and all it did was provide motivation to Florida and set up the refs for revenge the following year (who obviously felt Richt showed them up.). Meyer and staff coach players up, CMR and staff coach players down. That’s the reality. They had the talent and wet their pants in their biggest games. The Brandon Spikes hit on Knowshon set the tone for the game and ended the mojo from the year before. End of story. The only game I saw the Dawgs smell blood in the last two years was against Hawaii — and it’s obvious the Rainbows were in way over their heads. Georgia players seem cocky to me, but don’t back it up on the field. I’m tired of seeing a Georgia cornerback get beat on a long pass, and then shake his head when the ball is overthrown like he had something to do with the play being unsuccessful. Forget the injuries, Florida had them too. This year Richt had the pieces to put it all together and couldn’t do it. If he couldn’t do it this year, it won’t ever happen. I predict next year will be the tipping point — starting with a loss to Oklahoma State — which will set the tone for the year. Sorry to be so negative, but that’s the way I see it.

Anybody else notice….

Two minutes before half, OU and FL in a seesaw defensive battle, OU takes the ball and drives down the field. Takes a great goal line stand by Fl to stop them.

THAT’S the difference between playing for a championship and watching the game on TV. Didn’t hear Stoops mutter some asine crap about “not wanting his defense back on the field.” Hell no, two minute drill, he was going for the score.

Pay attention Richt…

How will UF’s NC win impact UGA?

Considering the UF NC team is mostly freshmen and sophomores (there goes Richt’s “we’re a young team” excuse from last year out the window), that Meyer and his staff are far superior to Richt’s, I would say that we won’t win the East for some time to come. Florida’s next recruiting class will lead the nation and Meyer knows how to coach-up raw talent. I don’t see any end to this pattern in the foreseeable future. I see a UF dynasty in the making.

My biggest concern comes from Richt’s assertion that his staff did some of their best coaching this year. If he really meant it, he’s stupider than I originally thought.

I see us as a perennial #2 in the East team for a long time to come. If you’re happy with that, then you’ll be happy with Richt and Co.

Richt said that this year his staff did their best job ever. Net result 10-3

Urban Meyer said nothing of the sort. Net result: SEC East title, SEC title and the 2nd MNC in 3 years.

I would’t clear space for any more trophies in Butts-Mehre (unless it’s the Peach Bowl).

UGA will win as many MNCs in the next 27 years as they have in the past 27.

Personally, I’m more excited about next year than I was this year. I hated being pre-season #1, because I had a feeling it would feed the ego of a team that had loads of potential, but not a killer instinct. Bradley made a great point about everyone waiting for Stafford or Moreno to make a play. That’s exactly the way our losses played out. As much as I love Stafford and Moreno, it always seemed to me that the losses just didn’t bother them as much. I know they worked hard and played their butts off, but I don’t really get the feeling like their ultimate dream is to win SEC and National Titles, say like Tebow.

Assuming someone between Caleb King, Richard Samuel, Dontavious Jackson, Carlton Thomas, and Washaun Ealey can step up; I believe we’ll be a lot better than people think. I’m a little worried about receiver besides Green. Who do we have?..Durham, Moore, Tavarres King and who else?

This is most ridiculous and unintentionally funny moment of last night. Thom Brennaman’s analysis on St. Tebow…”In such a cynical and sarcastic society, often times looking for the negative on anybody and anything, if you’re fortunate enough to spend five minutes or 20 minutes around TimTebow, your life is better for it.”

Are you kidding me? Thom, it is you and the other “journalists” who try to dig up dirt on everyone, not the viewers at home. Get off your soapbox, it’s a football game! You and Tebow should vacation together, so you can whisper loving praise into his ear. Thom, my life is vastly worse for spending almost 4 hours listening to you and your hapless sidekick butcher a good game with your one-sided commentary.

Florida’s defense is the difference. They attack the LOS and the DBs break on the ball, cover tight and attack the receivers. They will occasionally give up the big play IF the opponent executes but they don’t sweat it. Georgia plays soft defense to not give up the big play and they always end up in the shadow of their own goalpost. Georgia will never catch up to Florida by playing careful on defense. The TOO Deep Zone EVERY play is killing them but it appears to be something we have to live with.

Chip Towers——First, please let me thank you for consistently moderating one of the best team-specific college football blogs in America. Neither the Gators nor any other SEC football team gets any kind of coverage like this from the mainstream media outlets. Frankly, as a Gator alumnus and fan living in Atlanta, I’m a little bit jealous of your daily coverage of UGA. Dawg fans should grateful for your frequent and usually insightful comments and questions regarding UGA sports. Kudos to you, Mr. Sports Reporter.

So, how does the Florida’s second BCS championship in 3 seasons affect the Dawgs? Simple. In combination with LSU’s two BCS titles in the past five years, it extends an aura of national credibility around the four or five competitive teams at the top of the SEC. If and when UGA beats Florida or LSU, the victory means that much more. And when UGA is finally in line for a title berth against another undefeated or another on-loss team, the Dawgs will be the beneficiary of a lot of residual conference credibility. Every undefeated or one-loss SEC conference champion deserves to be seriously considered for the BCS title game bid. That includes the Dawgs when their time comes.

For the record, their have been 11 BCS title games to date (1998-2009). SEC teams have played in five of the eleven; and they have won all five in which they participated (Tennessee ‘98, LSU ‘03 & ‘07, Florida ‘06 and ‘08). In the three Bowl Alliance games which preceded the BCS, an SEC team participated in two of the three games, winning one (Florida ‘96) and losing one (Florida ‘95). In the three Bowl Coalition title games which preceded the Bowl Alliance, an SEC team participated SEC team participated in one of them and won (Alabama ‘92).

In the Bowl Championship/Alliance/Coalition era, SEC teams have participated in 8 of the 17 number-1-vs-number-2 championship games, and won 7 of the 8 games in which and SEC team has played. Only one undefeated SEC team has ever been denied a championship game berth (Auburn ‘04), and both teams selected for that game were also 12-0 undefeated conference champions (USC and Oklahoma). In that 17-season timeframe, four different SEC have played won national championship games.

Bottom line: That SEC record of dominance builds an awful lot of conference credibility for UGA … if and when the Dawgs can finally have a break-out season. The rest is up to the UGA players and coaches.

The Flordia game is the benchmark of the Georgia season each and every year dating back to the birth of the series. Even in 1980 Vince Dooley admits the Florida game springbroaded them to the National Title. It should be the case now also. When Spurrier got to Florida his cheif objective was to BEAT GEORGIA if he wanted the program to take off. That point has now come for the Bulldog program and Coach Richt. I will stand behind my words, I’m a Bulldog Fan that pulls for ANY SEC school not playing UGA and playing for the National Title. I want the Title team in my conference EVERY YEAR. Dawg fans hate the Gators. I’ve respected the Gators as long as I’ve been a UGA fan (28 years) but GEORGIA MUST BEAT FLORIDA before I even feel UGA has a chance I don’t care how good they look and play, they MUST BEAT FLORIDA PERIOD!!! Mark Richt even says “We don’t have to beat Florida to win the conference”, I say you have to beat them to win the National Title. Don’t believe me…see 2002 season (13-1), I wonder who that ONE was to…(Thanks George Foster and Terrance Edwards and 0-13 on 3rd Down) Yep I called them out cause it’s fact. The Florida- Georgia game is all emotion harnessed with football, it’s that important and hopefully the Georgia Program will soon realize that!! Go Dawgs, Go SEC!!!

UF = Hardwork, disciliplne, desire, and better coached. UGA = undisciplined, not fundamentally sound and seem to lack desire sometimes.

During the UGA v UF game the commentators talked about UF doing 160.. something situps, for every yard Knowshon gained on them in 2007, during off season workouts. I think UGA needs to do a situp and push up for every penalty yard we had in 2008. Maybe that will discipline this team in 09.

Pianful words for a dawg fan to say but UF has won ANOTHER National Championship.

Folks that don’t recognize that are in denial… . By the same token, it’s not like Georgia is a bottom-feeder, as so many of your fellow Gators come on here. I hate the gators and I hate UM but I have to give him credit—he is one heck of a coach. As long as he is at UF and as long as we have CMR we will beat the gators only every once in awhile and it won’t be next year even if Tebow and Harvin both leave. Lets just hope that in 2010 Notre Dame will lure UM away.

Are the people who are glad Florida won “for the SEC” really Georgia fans? Perhaps they are insulated Georgia fans who’ve never had to deal with Gator fans.

I wouldn’t pull for Florida if they were playing Red China and coached by that lunatic Iranian dictator. What does conference affiliation have to do with anything. Do you think Texas fans were pulling hard for OU, all in the name of the Big XII? Or that Michigan fans were rooting like hell for Ohio State to beat Texas? Woody Hayes refused to cross the Michigan state line unless he had to coach a game up there. Do you think Steve Spurrier has ever pulled for Georgia in a game in his entire life because of SEC loyalty?

Any Dawg fans here who pull for Tech because of state loyalty? Didn’t think so. Loyalty should be to schools, not to conferences or geography.

Maybe that’s the problem - Georgia’s players have gotten as soft as their fans.

I’ll reserve my congratulations for Utah, who won all of its games and spanked the runner-up SEC team (best regular season SEC team at 8-0), Alabama, in the Sugar Bowl. Beat them much more decisively than UF did, in fact. If I were a Utah fan, I’d be wondering why a one-loss team finished ranked no. 1 over my team.

Talk about Utah’s conference and weak schedule all you want, but I don’t see many SEC teams that could beat TCU, BYU and Alabama in the same season. Florida lost to a 4-loss Ole Miss team. At home.

Florida won a championship this season - it’s called the SEC. They now have 8, which puts them behind Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia on the all-time conference title list. The national championship is fun to talk about, but it doesn’t actually exist at the D-1 level. Elections are won by votes, not football titles.

Was actually looking ahead to 2009 with hope then I remembered:

-CWM still on staff -Hoping for 19 serious injuries to heal -Will go to Stillwater w/ half the team due to suspensions from summer arrests

Well the good news is that much of our fan base will be thrilled with 8 wins (give or take 1). They never question unfulfilled potential and aren’t concerned at all that UF is now miles ahead of our program. They love Willie and overlook all of his shortcomings. They embrace mediocrity and will be awarded with same yet again in 2009.

Tebow will likely return because unlike our departed QB, he actually embraces his leadership role and is truly having fun at UF, and will likely play for another MNC. Dawg fans will sit back and talk about how darn lucky you have to be to play for the MNC.

Since my freshman year in 1980 I’ve always felt our time was coming again. I lived through some great years and always felt how close we were. After this past year I no longer believe that UGA has what it takes to win at this level. It’s not the end of the world - life goes on but I have to call it like I see it.

Meyer has set an absolute standard of being on top and nothing will stand in his way. UGA talks about it but you never get the impression they ever believe they can do it.

Before the WLOCP this year, Meyer was declaring the Gators would get revenge; Richt was apologizing for the year before. UF kicked the crap out of us. That was very telling and I think we can safely extrapolate these results for the foreseeable future.

It certainly does help with the argument the ACC folks try to bring every year, that there conference is better than the SEC. I would say that a 3rd straight Nat’l. Championship and a final top-25 that is consistently “littered” with SEC teams ranked higher than their teams (once again, UGA finishes ahead of Tech in the final polls…ooooh, yeah…right there!!) says a little something about the entire conference. 45-42, uh, yeah…how about 256-160.

The Gators were awesome this year and deserve all the praise and the glory.

Congratulations, Champs! Maybe one day our coaching staff will discover the right formula. Until then…

I’m not advocating a head coaching change but seriously, how close do you think we are to winning a MNC?

BTW, how does the number of season-ending injuries keep growing? I thought it was 19. Injuries in the 4th Qtr of the Cap 1 bowl shouldn’t be added to your list of excuses. Do we win it without those injuries? Yeah, I don’t think so either. Do you remember the 6 personal fouls against AU? Was that an issue to you or do you think we were well-disciplined and well-coached?

If you were a UF fan, Ron Zook would still be there and they would have 0 MNC’s instead of 2.

I’m sure you loved Ray Goff, Jim Donnan and now, Willie Martinez. Since I’m not as fond of these guys, according to you I need to quit contributing to the Athletic Department, tear up my season tickets and my UGA degree and cheer for Tech? I generally root against SEC rivals in big bowl games. I had a fun time watching Utah beat Bama. The Gators took care of business against the Sooners, but I don’t think there are many people out there who believe that game wouldn’t have gone differently if Oklahoma hadn’t blown two red zone opportunities. That’s a hallmark of a Bob Stoops BCS squad, though.

Florida certainly made some mistakes and weren’t made to pay for them. Like the champs that they are, Florida made the Sooners pay for their sins. Congrats to Urban Meyer for getting another ring. Congrats to Tim Tebow on healing the lame and making the blind to see.

First let me say congradulations gators.I have been a Georgia Bulldawg fan for as long as I can remember and I think all this does is makes the Dawgs have to work harder than ever. I live about as far in southeast Georgia as you can get and I work with several so called bigtime gator fans who are very poor losers and very poor winners. So now I have to again listen to their loud mouth, smartass comments for another year. Maybe its because for the first 75 years of their football program they never won anything and they just havent figured out how to handle it yet. I just know that I would not pull for the Florida Gators in a goat screwing contest.

Congrats to you as a fan and to the Whole Gatornation on a great season. Coaches and players alike showed what hard work and a total team effort can produce. I agree with Mr. college football, when will someone wake up and give Charlie Strong a HC position? He should have taken home the SEC coach of the year honors. Urban Meyer has set the bar for the SEC and reaching it will be hard for all teams, but that’s what makes the SEC so strong is all those teams will keep reaching and trying harder. Your assesment of Chip Towers is correct, and i for one think we are fortunate to have him, I don’t consider him a reporter but a blog specialist. Next year looks good for the SEC again with Gators and LSU bringing back a lot of starters as will ALA, and UGA. team that surprises me the most is Ole. Miss. if that program continues to get better we’re all in trouble, should be an interesting year.

Congrats again!!

Hot Dawg 84, Sautee Dawg & others——Thank you for your gracious congratulations on the Gators’ BCS title game victory last night. Most, if not all, of the Dawg fans and other SEC bloggers have extended their congratulations. For some of you, I know that’s hard … like swallowing when you have strep throat.

Perhaps we should all make a New Year’s resolution to kill the blog troublemakers with kindness and expressions of good sportsmanship. And, if that doesn’t work … ignore them. It drives them nuts, and that, my canine friends, is the best revenge.

Sautee Dawg——I would be happy for the Gators if Charlie Strong remained their Defensive Coordinator forever, but that would not be fair to him. He has clearly earned the promotion to head coach at a good program, and I would be proud if he were the Gators’ head coach one day. He’ll get a head coaching job soon, and I hope he’s patient enough to wait for a truly good opportunity. Coach Strong will be the best kind of “minority hire”——that is, the kind who succeeds because he’s a damn fine football coach.

Football operations chief Steve Greer retiring, WRs coach John Eason taking over for Greer, RBs coach Tony Ball moving to WRs coach, grad asst. Bryan MacClendon moving to RBs coach.

Been hearing Eason moving upstairs for a long while but always told B-Mac would take over wideouts. Ball coached receivers at Louisville and Va. Tech before joining Dogs.

Chip, thanks for the update on Greer, et al.

When will we get a story on the details? Eason was in the dog-house last year with WR’s dropping everything, but gotta admit the WR’s had a great season. Of course AJ had about everything to do with that.

Why would our highly profitable athletic department hire a relatively unproven grad assistant as the RB coach? Why not go out and get a proven guy?

Here’s the story that should be popping up on the web page before long:

By CHIP TOWERS ctowers@ajc.com

Athens — What has been rumored for years finally came to fruition on Friday as Georgia wide receivers coach John Eason left the sideline to accept an administrative position and graduate assistant Bryan McClendon was promoted to a full-time assitant coaches’ position.

There was a twist, however. Instead of taking over wide receivers — the position he played at Georgia from 2002-05 and the one he assisted Eason the past two seasons — McClendon will move in at running backs coach and Tony Ball will take over wide receivers.

That’s an interesting move considering running backs is going to be rather unsettled position this season. Knowshon Moreno, who rushed for more than 2,700 yards for the last two seasons, just left for the NFL.

“I met with the running backs for the first time today and I just reminded them of the opportunity our segment is about to take on,’ said McClendon, 25. “We just lost a guy that had back-to-back 1,300-yard seasons and my oldest running back is a sophomore. I reminded them about the challenge they need to get ready for.”

Ball, who has coached running backs at Georgia since 2006, coached wide receivers at Louisville and Virginia Tech before joining Bulldogs coach Mark Richt’s staff in Athens.

“Tony has some experience there and that’s an area he wanted to move into,” said Eason, 63, who becomes Georgia’s director of football operations. “For B-Mac it’s an opportunity to come in and coach full time and learn another position. With his intellect he’ll pick up fine.”

The timing of Friday’s announcement was intentional. The Bulldogs, like all college teams, are in the throes of recruiting season. Saturday is the last day coaches can be on the road. The rest of the month will be filled with on-campus visits.

“I understand what Coach Richt is doing,” said assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner. “He doesn’t want to mislead anybody. There’s been a lot of speculation about this and Coach Richt wants to do business up front and not mislead anybody.”

Eason also held the title of associate head coach. There is speculation that title might be bestowed upon Garner, who passed up a lucrative multiyear offer from Tennessee to remain with the Bulldogs.

“If so nobody has told me about it,” Garner said Friday. “I’m being honest with you. I’d be flattered but nobody has talked to me about that.”

The staff restructuring was made possible because Steve Greer, whose association with the University of Georgia spans 35 years, announced his retirement as director of football operations. Greer was an All-America defensive lineman for the Bulldogs in 1969 and been an assistant coach or administrator since 1979.

“Steve Greer has been a loyal and dedicated Georgia Bulldog for more than 35 years and we are all grateful for his service to the University,” Richt said in a statement. “I know all the Georgia people will join in wishing him the very best in retirement.”

Richt was on the road recruiting and could not be reached for comment.

We need to face reality … Gator defense held OK to only 14 points. How many could they have scored on Georgia? 60 - 65? Defense wins ballgames. The Gators only had to score 15 points to win. Georgia won’t win until defense returns and defense will not return under Willie Marinez. I saw where CMR was reorganizing the football staff … he only reshuffled. He needs to reorganize it and move Willie Martinez to ball boy … just maybe he could do that. I’m so sick of thinkng about next year and how pitiful our defense will be under his direction. I would pay good money to contribute to a fund to pay him off and get a real DC. Willie needs to go.

Look at the bright side: at least your Tigers don’t have to play the Gators next year, and every year after that, with the SEC’s current East-West rotation. You don’t see players from other schools doing the “solja boy” on the sidelines while their coach does nothing. Injuries played a huge part in our losses this year. Yes, I know injuries are part of the game-and every team has them. But I do not think that Fla and ALA had the severity that we had. Coach Richt was very honest. He said that due to the injuries they started limiting live tackling in practice about mid-season. This really hurt the defense-if you look at our performance as the season wore on-it got worse and worse. He reversed course for the bowl game- and it made a differnce. Just like any other job, you learn as you go. so those who want to throw Martinez under the buse-you may want to re-think your position. I feel very comfortable with Joe Cox next year-give him some more reps in practice-and I think he’ll be great leader and QB. This will give us time to break in Gray and Murray. We should feel very fortunate that Joe has one more year of eligibility-he knows the system. Plus, he’ll have something that Matthew Stafford never had- a seasoned offensive line from game one!.

You watched two very well coached teams. Unlike ours. They say Oklahoma was the most penalized team in 1-A? But they looked pretty disciplined all night to me, considering the magnitude of the game.A tip of the hat to the SEC the best conference in College Football! What a great leader in Tim Tebow, what he may lack in arm strength compared to Stafford he more than makes up for in determination. Florida is a more talented team than we are. That doesn’t mean they can’t be beat on any given day we just have to be better coached than them. Something easier said than done currently.

dangerranger6969——Notwithstanding the obvious bias inherent in my blog handle, there are many Gator fans who would love it if the Florida-Georgia game evolved into an alternating Atlanta-Jacksonville series. Gator fans associate playing in Atlanta with the SEC championship and the NCAA Final Fours and regionals, and the venue is a fun change of pace from playing in Gainesville and other small Southern college towns.

Preserve the 50-50 seating arrangements, thus preserving the neutral site character of the game. Most Gator fans would be happy to travel to Atlanta every other year, and the arrangement will not alienate your south Georgia fanbase who are vehemently opposed to moving the game. The neutral site game is special, and everyone knows it. Switching to a standard home-and-home series would change the character and marketability of the game, making it just another SEC East game, not the media event that it is, nor the recruiting tool that it has become for both programs.

If UGA were to move their series “home” games to Athens after the current contract expires, Florida’s athletic department has already signaled on several occasions that the Gators would keep their series “home” games in Jacksonville, but with the usual 10,000-seat set-aside for the visiting Dawg fans.

UGA’s biggest hurdle: overcoming the majority of your own fans. Perhaps your AD can put it up to a vote of your season ticket holders … .

By AltamahaDawg

January 10, 2009 9:12 AM | Link to this

No it wouldn’t ‘alienate” us, for for damn sure p** us off. What’s the point in moving it from Jacksonville and still ending up traveling and playing in a stadium not your own. Just go home and home. The only people that would appreciate playing a college football game in that sterile atmosphere of the Ga Dome, are the Atlanta based fans, and it has nothing to do with the game and all to do with what best for thier convenience. Some folks would love it it every game was right there. Just ride the bus. Or better yet, just put it on thier laptop. Maybe someday we can develop a “college football experience PILL”, and not even have to be burdened by all of that silly pagentry.

Like many Bulldog fans I’m upset that Florida has been able to build such a dynamic program under Darth Visor and Urban Meyer. I enjoyed Coach Dooley’s remarkable run against the Gators, but even toward the end of his time the balance was beginning to shift. Part of the issue is the huge population surge in Florida over the past 40 years and the ton of talent available. True, Georgia has a lot of talent and other schools come into the state to recruit. At the same time, look at the number of Division I programs that have been developed in Florida over the past decade and generated success. As a long time fan and former sports writer, it’s clearly evident to me that things run in cycles. Depending on how long a coach stays at a school, probation, injuries etc play into the success.

I’ve mentioned on this blog several times that Osborne, Paterno and Michigan struggled for decades before winning national titles. Their programs were successful, won bowl games and sent tons of players to the pros without earning the big prize.

I also remember the great success Southern Cal had with John McKay and John Robinson and then it foundered for a long time before Pete Carrol came on board.

With Mark Richt all the pieces are in place to make a run. It just happens that Georgia competes in the most competitive division of the most competitive conference in the country. USC doesn’t have to play UGA’s schedule. Neither does Oklahoma, Ohio State or Michigan. And Notre Dame, now a an echo of itself, gets to play the service academies to pick up two or three wins a year against Division I opponents.

I do get upset when UGA loses to Florida. And I see the Gators having continued success I also see Georgia having great success and enjoying a great ride under CMR —- and his record proves he is capable of winning. But all of us need to sit back and realize that football, like life, goes in cycles, and sometimes, with talented coaches and players, a lot of hard work and little lady luck, a national championship will come our way.

I thought fla was supposed to win it all last year after chris leak team won it. they had tebow coming back and all that great talent. but nope, they go 9-4 and lose to a joke of a team in mich. they will not win it all next year because harvin will be gone. plain and simple. i think uga will beat them next year with a healthy line and our best pass rusher coming back the dogs and

WM defense will be at the top again next year. i ask anyone to see if they can find one team in the top 5 with a better record than us that has a line with 3 freshman starting and two sophs starting on the O-line. and their backups were freshman as well. the experience those young guys got this year will only make us stronger for next year. our line will be pretty impressive next year and having a 5th year senior in joe cox as qb is not a big drop off from stafford. joe cox can and will make all the throws that staff made and the big difference here is that he will actually have time to do it. staff was having to make his throws while under prerssure, and he made some damn good throws at that. Joe Cox will have a better line to work with so he should have no problem hitting our top notch receivers. i think our offense will be just as good as it was this year simply because our line will be 3 times better.look what happen to ala when they lost just one guy..we lost like 3-4 counting back-ups. Willie will have the players next year to get pressure on the qb which he lacked this year. due to injuries and some leaving for the pros. uga is really close to winning it all. i see us winning at least 2 in the next 4 years simply because our line will be finally put together.in the 3 years stafford was qb he never had more than 2 seniors on line which is a big diffrence. most if not all of the top 5 teams have seniors and juniors with a few sophs on their lines. that is why uga has come up a little short these last few years. football games are won in the trenches.we have the skill players and the great coaches as they are the reason we have won 10 games a season the last 8 years under richt and company. i wish all you whiners out there would tell me why you think you know more about football than our coaches so at least i can read your comments without wanting to punch the computer..=) i love when the SEC teams win natiional titles that only helps uga chances even more to winning one. that way when uga makes it through the SEC as champs they wont get screwed like aub did a few years back by the likes of the crappy teams of the big 10 and pac 10 and big 12. so just relax uga fans and enjoy the off season and come back next year ready to put a beat down on the other teams out there. at least uga can say wait until next year where as most teams like mia and fla st and ga tech can’t. by the 5th week of the football season next year uga will be in the mix for a NC.

I think Dawg in Kalamazoo and Reality Dawg have it right. When you see the absurd range of feelings on this blog, and you always see it, one would think that there would be a great satisfaction from winning 10 games every year, going to a strong bowl, and winning an occasional SEC championship. Whats amazing is that half of this group goes beserk as soon as it is apparent that UGA will not win a nat champ. That group is hilarious and we all laugh at them. Who can possible expect a nat champ ? Not even FL. With luck, talent, and great coaching it MAY happen but theres still only a 50% chance at best. Why is UGA upset ? Its UTAH that should be upset this year. Or maybe Texas.

The UF vs UGA game is fine where it’s at, most of the people that whine about this games location have never been to this match-up in Jax. It’s the type of gameday feeling that could not be duplicated anywhere, moving to Ga. Dome would only give The City of Atlanta athourity to disburse tickets to whoever they see fit and those mostly would go to event sponsors. UGA and UF would lose out on the 50/50 seating arrangement. I think both schools would benifit form leaving the game in it’s current location. To have this game played on campus wouldn’t really be fair to the opposing fans, as this game is more of a war between them i think than it is the teams. CMR has mentioned that he would like to have this game at the Dome every other year, but hope it don’t happen. I’d hate to miss a my anual weekend in JAX, win or lose.

Out of 120 teams can’t but 1 win it all, I think with the coaching staff that we have oneday that team may very well be us. The fairweather fans don’t think so, I sat through some long and dissapointing games and seasons before Dooley and his group of Dawgs finally was that team and won’t give up on this team either.

The knee jerk reaction to WM’s defense this year is laughable. I don’t remember hearing all this b*** from so called “dawg fans” last year when the defense was stellar. Did WM suddenly forget how to coach. I don’t think so.

To all the bandwagon fans: find another team to pull for, because we don’t need you. CMR has brought success to this program like it has not seen since Dooley. And any given year anything can happen. To win a MNC you have to have a little luck, which we haven’t.

First off congratulation to the Gators on a great season and winning the national championship. They earned it.

Next- Coach Charly Strong deserves a lot of credit for their success once again. All these college administrators i.e. Presidents, ADs etc. are idiots for not realizing just how great a coach he truly is, a winner and one of a kind coach. Letting the fact that his wife is white enter into this is plain ignorance.

Third, Richt would be wise to hire him as his defensive coordinator and head coach in waiting, but that will never happen because of his blind spot when it comes to Martinez. Yes we had a lot of injuries this year but Great Coaches make adjustments, this staff didn’t realize their mistakes until after the regular season was over. I believe that lesson should have been learned in 2005 when we had some injury problems at the end of the year as well and we didn’t have full contact in our practices before the last 4 games with 3 of those being loses.

Coach Martinez is a very good to Great defensive backs coach and IMHO I believe that is what he is best suited for. He is in over his head as a defensive coordinator and that has been shown time and again the last 4 seasons and it became very apparent this past season because of all of the injuries and problems on the defense and special teams.

Plus we did have a very good season when you reflect on it and realize that with all of the injuries we still won 10 games and could have easily lost 3 to 4 more games. That is a testament to just how deep in talent this team truly was and just how close to being a NC caliber team they were.

Well NY DAWG,

How do you explain last year’s defensive success?

I don’t think most dawg fans disagree with me. You only hear from the ones who don’t.

So, by not winning the MNC such great teams as USC, Texas, Penn State, and others should be firing coaches? The last time I checked only one team could win the MNC.

And if we were to fire WM and/or CMR, who do you propose we replace them with? You and people of your ilk are always looking for greener pastures. A great coach does not directly translate to a MNC (see Joe Pa). I am curious, what great football team do you coach for? I’m sure your phone will be ringing off the hook if UGA decides WM needs to go.

Hey GradyGrad, I’ll use some of the same from the Tim Brando bit, just how much football have you coached? Let me see, are you a Broadcast Sequence, an News/Editorial Sequence or a PR/Ad Man Sequence major? Whichever it is it basically qualifies you for just another uneducated opinion. In Mark Richt we have a both an outstanding football coach and a quality individual that has built as class an operation as any in the league, or the country for that matter. The proof of the pudding at this point is that both superior coaches and players want to be there and win there. I’ll take my chances against the Gators and the Vols and the Jackets everyday of the week just for the privilege of saying I’m a Georgia Bulldog and won’t take any crap off any of ‘em…plus we’ll kick their collective butts more often than they’ll kick ours. They have average offence with high school defences.OL Miss kicked their a* and florida did the same!the only reason texas won is becuse they were facing the usual over rated bowl failing suckeyes. I love Martinez and CMR by the way. they are both great! What did Dawg nation think about the final polls? Ohio st.went in at #10 loss their freaken game and finished #9!Thats a new one on me guys, lose the damn bowl game and move up a notch.Boise st also lost prooving again the wac is just p** poor. Texas Tech got pounded by the rebels and also barely moved down.Georgia wins against a decent Michigan St. team in the biggest bowl outside the bcs bowls and is ranked below these three losers. Look it up, the Capital one pays 4.5 million,Only the bcs bowls pay out more. Never mind,it’s just the way it is I guess. I also want to say good job to Ketucky for doing what we could not do and beat an acc team this year.I give credit where it is due and my hat goes off to the yellow jackets for finally beating us. Too bad you only play hoping we will throw you a bone once every 7 years!!lol just kidding, good game. We did whoop LSU’S a* though. By “overcoming the majority of your own fans,” I was referring to the fact that a majority of UGA fans apparently still support keeping the game in Jacksonville, thereby preserving the last neutral site tradition in the SEC. Notwithstanding the opinions of some very vocal Dawg bloggers, I do not believe there is a consensus among Dawg fans to move the game anywhere, including Athens or Atlanta.

In answering dangerdawg6969, I was suggesting that the neutral site game tradition is one which is worth preserving, even if UGA’s moves its series home games. Without the neutral site tradition, the Florida-Georgia game is just another tough SEC game, no more special than Alabama-LSU or Florida-Tennessee, and that would take some of the shine off the Florida-Georgia rivalry.

Bottom line: When the current Jacksonville contract expires, games played in odd-numbered years are home games for UGA and the UGA AD can arrange to have UGA’s home games played anywhere he wants. Jacksonville, Athens, Atlanta, Savannah … presumably anywhere that has a stadium that seats 70,000 to 80,000 people. That’s up to your folks, not the Florida AD.

Like most Gators, I prefer to keep the game in Jacksonville, but if UGA wants to move its series home games to Athens or anywhere else, Florida would likely keep its series home games in Jacksonville. Florida fans will get 7/8 of the tickets instead of half, and the atmosphere will be very different. If so, that would be a sad ending to 75 years of tradition.

Sautee Dawg——I understand a lot of the small-town distrust of all things Atlanta, but I can assure you that the members of the Atlanta Sports Authority and the Chamber of Commerce would just about give up their first-born children to have the Florida-Georgia game played in Atlanta every other season. So, rather than the local powers-that-be demanding free tickets, it would likely be more a matter of what the city can do for the schools to get them to bring the game here.

Like I said to alta~dawg, most Gators are happy with the game where it is. I was merely suggesting Atlanta as the only currently viable Georgia location for a neutral site game. Otherwise, the only real alternative is a home-home series.

I hate the Gators, but I respect them and congratulate them. Everyone says UGA doesn’t have what it takes to win a National Title, but they seem to forget that UF won both with one-loss. (NOT meant as a disparaging comment, clearly UF was the nation’s best team both times). UGA’s season in ‘02 would have been good enough most of this decade to play for the NT. Last year a Kentucky field goal in OT vs LSU probably means we are playing for a NT. Sometimes things have to fall your way. However, if you don’t go undefeated, you really have nothing to complain about.

Atlanta Gator

You are the representative of the type of UF fan I see most of the time during the Jacksonville game. Not some of these other bozos. Sure, there are some exceptions, but I don’t think people realize that for the most part, the atmosphere is simply spirited and good-natured. The game needs to stay in Jacksonville.

1- Leave the game in J-ville, for those of you that haven’t been, there is nothing like it in all of college sports. 2- UF will have an excellent chance to return to the BCSNCG. UT has a new coach, UGA loses three of the top offensive producers in it’s history, and has a QB with little game experence. South Carolina has QB problems and seemed to quit playing hard at the end of the year. They didn’t look at all like a Spurrier coached team in their bowl game. UK and Vandy are better than they used to be, but little threat to Fl. Bama will lose a senior QB and a couple of huge linemen and still lacks depth, and LSU and AU have problems on offense. So if Tebow comes back the Gators will be holding all the cards. 3- UGA still has a chance, if Cox and King step up. The O line will be a strong suit if Sturdivant returns to form and they can avoid the injury bug.

Atlanta Gator, Traditions are great but they come and go i.e. uga-auburn played in Columbus for many years until we decided that wasn’t fair to uga. Now the big question—are you willing to play uga in atlanta for the next 40 years? Remember the ga-fl wlocp in jax—a great tradition. but you can party anyplace any time. Also, remember the name of the game is winning and because of the home field advantage(being fair to both teams) i believe home and home is the way to go. My 2 favorite teams are ga and whoever plays fl. That being said, I must admit that you have an excellent coach and tim tebow, in my opinion, is the best college football player I have ever seen and that includes hershall

I pulled for all SEC teams in their bowls except Florida. I never pull for them.

Special high fives to LSU for the Bug killing they did in their bowl.

UGA will have another top recruiting class this year. And Bobo and Martinez will screw this recruiting class up just like all the others.

You guys can praise Bobo until the cows come home…but he is nothing but a HS level type of coach. At best he could coach at a school like Troy State.

Martinez? What else can be said that hasn’t already been said about this lamer.

UGA is destined for mediocrity while this staff remains. The big money alums appear to be satisfied with “10 win seasons”..aka, mediocrity. And sadly the fans appear to be content as well.

But we can always say “next year we’ll win the national championship”.

2009 Predictions: Tebow will win the Heisman his Sr year, FLA will win another National Title (currently 19 starters are projected to return), UGA will finish 3d in the SECE, and RAMBLE ON will finally get the date with a dawg fan she’s been begging for.

Coaches like to say it’s not them, it’s the players. But, in reality, when UGA was wiping the turf with Gator hide before the 90s, it wasn’t because UGA had better players than UF. It was one reason alone, coaching. The value of real estate is location, location, location (or, at least, it used to be). With football, it’s coaching, coaching, coaching. We’ve all seen it on both the collegiate and professional level. Coaches make the most impact on a team because the degree of difference in the quality and skill level of the players between two schools like UGA and UF is nominal. I like Mark Richt but he has some serious problems with special teams play and the defensive side of the ball that all the 5 star recruits they can muster will not be able to change.

gainesville ga dawg——Yes, it has been publicly discussed in the past. Gator fans want to keep the Gators’ “home” game in Jacksonville even if Georgia wants their series home games played in Athens. I suspect, however, that it would not last more than a few seasons in Jacksonville without the 50-50 neutral site seating, etc., because the atmosphere would not be the same.

As for playing the game in Atlanta, no, I would not want to see it played in Atlanta every year, but I think every other year would be great for north Georgia Dawgs, and most Gators I know seem to enjoy their periodic trips to Atlanta for the SEC championship game. That having been said there are clearly a few bloggers on here that are adamantly opposed to playing in Atlanta or Jacksonville … others who are adamantly opposed to moving to a home-and-home series.

You fellas sort it out and let us know. I think the Gator coach and team will be happy to meet your UGA kids anywhere you want——every other year.

To address Mr. Towers’ question, I would say that FL’s NC will actually help GA as FL will get more national 5 star recruits and possibly leave some regional kids available.

Those of you doubting CMR are all cry babies and not associated with the university or bandwagon fans. This is his first HC, he’ll have to learn as he goes. Who out there would be an upgrade to Mark? Not only on the field coaching but off the field representation? Do you think Auburn regrets getting rid of TT for Chizsik?

I would rather be GA and the top 1o than to act like the hoodlums of FL. Their taunting and self promotion antics on the field is embarrassing.

While some see CMR’s loyalty to his staff as a negative, I think its viewed more in the coaching profession as a positive. You aren’t very apt to be thrown under the bus publicly and be a sacrificial lamb to the clammoring fair weather fans.

NY DAWG- You ain’t a DAWG! Get some history before you slam anyone who thinks Richt is the best coach around. Perhaps you should look at his career as O coach at FSU. Beat FU on regular basis, championship after championship, Heisman Trophy winners. Since he left, they haven’t done so well. Richt knows more about it than anyone. He and UGA are a perfect match as UGA alumni know. UGA has never had this streak of success, year after year. You sound like an interloper WISHING he would go. You ain’t a dog!

It’s been a good year for the Dawgs and the true fans on here. Nice to see most of you not falling for the false blogs. How low can anyone be to pretend you are a fan and come on here slinging mud? Takes a special slimeball and a few of them came on to jostle some of you into believing they are fans. Now that those few are forewarned, everyone should be forearmed and not belive the cynicism these people are selling. Dawgs cheer for their team , coaches and our school they represent. They don’t detract and cover up their negativism by “saying” they are knowledgeable in the coaching field. Sounds more like sour grapes from J.Donnan. He was on ESPN tossing stones for years, now I guess he is blogging. Haven’t you wondered why he never was hired as HC even though he used to apply for every opening? No, you probably haven’t.

Moving the UGA/FLA game to the GA Dome every other year would be a welcomed change.

I don’t think going to true home/away split would work as well, but moving the game to the GA Dome would be a way of making it more fair to UGA and their fans who live near the Athens/Atlanta Area and don’t want to travel out of state to see the game live.

Something special about playing at the GA Dome for UGA anyways, FLA seems to play great there as well.

I hope when the Jax. contract is up they really revisit this option of playing the game every other year at the GA Dome in ATL.

Welcome and fair? to who? UGA fans come from lots of towns, and many have to travel what equates to “out of the state” and spend the night to see the Dawgs play even at home. Atlanta folks can travel once a year, just the same as the rest of us do every time. Plus I seriously doubt that many folks who make the trip to Jville look at it as a reluctant sacrifice just to see a live game. It’s a road trip, and quite optional.

What exactly is special about the Dawgs and the Dome? Crappy environment for a college football game, and barely a winning percentage there.

Atlanta Gator, we in the southern portion of the state have helped pay for the World Congress Center, the Atlanta Convention Center, the daily repairs to the perimeter that you mentioned, along with work on 75-85, I-20, and many other Atlanta improvements. Albany and other South Ga. citys suffer from transportation problems and infrastructer needs while our tax money goes to Metro Atlanta. What may be worse than the money going north is the “brain drain”. Our best and brighest take their newly minted diplomas from UGA, Tech, Auburn, and FSU and head for the big citys. Why? Because Albany has 8.5% unemployment! That is why I resent so greatly our local tax dollars going to an area that needs little help. Want to see where your tax dollars went? Just get on 400 or 285 and you can see them being used every day. In the meantime, Albany cannot get an interstate highway. I had to leave the area over thirty years ago to have a chance for success and nothing has changed since then. We can’t even buy an Atlanta paper down here anymore. Am I bitter? Hell yes! At least leave Us one freakin’ ballgame!

shane——I sympathize, brother. I grew up in a small town in Florida, and I spent a lot of time working in small towns in north Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and Indiana after college. The “brain drain” you described is not restricted to south Georgia. On the other hand, if Atlanta weren’t so attractive, many of those same kids would move to Charlotte, Dallas, Indianapolis, Washington, New York, Chicago, etc., instead of staying in the state. The grass is always greener somewhere else when you’re 22 … .

As for the tax dollars, our General Assembly tried to snatch my license plate off my car last session, after I had paid an extra $75 for it and agreed to pay an extra $50 every year thereafter. Certain individuals among our legislators wanted to turn down over $1 million in free money so they could stick it to Georgia citizens who attended certain unnamed out-of-state universities. It’s a strange world, my friend, and there are some even stranger birds running it.

BTW, other than Chip’s occasional article, you’re not missing much in the hard-copy AJC … but, it will be nice to frame the 1-9-09 AJC sports page.

Georgia fans need to accept there are two elite teams in college football these day, USC and FL, year after year they put out great teams that can go anywhere in the country and win. The dogs are in a second tier with Ohio St., Virgina Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma, LSU and Texas. The second tier is very good at reloading and year in and year out they can go anywhere in the country and compete. The difference is USC and FL can win anywhere, the second tier can compete anywhere. Alabama may join that second tier or they may even move into tier one but they have to show me more than one solid season that ended rather badly. USC and FL enjoy a significant recruiting advantage at this point and their coaches are above average but the key really is the level of players.

LSU has won 2 NC title in 6 years.Richt, Saban are 10 win coaches with no potential to win at the Big Show soon. You have to play DEFENSE and have an experience top of the Line QB. The way The SEC having won 3 consecutive BCS Title Games now affects The Dawgs is that we were therefore able to end the season Ranked Number 13 in the AP and Number 10 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. Other than that, next year will be Year 20 and we have won 3 times against Florida in our own SEC East Division. It pinpoints the difference in our 2 Programs and defines the game in JAX as not a Rivalry. We do have Rivalries, however. Florida is not 1 of them.

2002-2003 UGA 3 Tech not ranked. .

2001-2002 UGA 22 Tech 24.

.

Two of the last 8 years (Coach Richt Era), Tech has been ranked. 1 was Number 24 and the other Number 22. Both of those years, UGA has the better football team, had the better season, and didn’t lose to crappy football teams like Tech’s Losses this year to Virginia, North Carolina and LSU - not a 1 of whom are a ranked football team in the only poll that will be published for the 2008-2009 season.

Tech 9-4 against a soft schedule.

UGA 10-3 against the 4th toughest Strength of Schedule in the nation.

You wish that you could disregard your losses to Virginia, North Carolina and LSU along with your loss to Virginia Tech, while UGA only has 3 Losses, all of whom are ranked teams in the Final AP Poll.

This has left the ACC with zero teams ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 14, while The SEC has four (4.)

Clearly Georgia Tech did not have as good a season as UGA.

Yet, all season long the Tech fans came running in here saying that UGA keeps DROPPING IN THE POLLS and Tech kept moving up in the rankings.

Now, however, that the season is over, UGA did not drop so far in the Polls as to determine that Tech had a better season than UGA.

You did NOT.

I do not see where Auburn is so damn great compared to UGA in the Coach Richt Era. You speak of national championships and Auburn has exactly One (1) Ever way back in 1957. In the 8 years of the Coach Richt Era, Auburn has been NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll 3 of the 8 years, while UGA has been ranked in fact every year of the last 12. In the 5 years Auburn has been ranked of the last 8 (Coach Richt Era), Auburn has been ranked ahead of UGA Number 2 to UGA Number 7 in 2004-2005 and Auburn 9 UGA 23 in 2006-2007. That’s it.

How the hell is Auburn so damn great compared to UGA then please War Eagle ?
