UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Stafford, Moreno ready for NFL?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
UPDATES PROVIDED HERE ALL DAY
Georgia is holding a press conference with Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and Mark Richt at 3 p.m. day to unveil the two players’ decisions regarding the NFL draft, Stafford’s father John Stafford confirmed to me this morning.
Unfortunately Mr. Stafford wouldn’t hint which way Matthew might be leaning. “I’m not going to reveal what that decision is,” Mr. Stafford said. “I’m going to let him do that.”
Mr. Stafford did tell me about all the feedback Stafford has gotten, including input from Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning and Jay Cutler and Kansas City Chiefs scout Mike Hagen. As you can see, those guys are all from the league. Not sure if that’s revealing or not.
“He’ gotten input about what it’s like, what to expect and everything else from those guys,” John Stafford said. “I’ve done my best to try to get him those kinds of contacts with those kinds of folks that have actually been involved in something to help him figure out what he wants to do. My role really was just to try to do that, to get him as much input as possible number one. And then number two really to help him go through the thought process, make sure he was looking at it both ways and look at the different areas and make sure he wasn’t getting too much weight from one point or the other. But I’ve always stated it’s up to him, it’s what he wants to do.”
Georgia players claim to be in the dark about the whole thing.
“If that’s their decisions I’m happy for them,” said rising senior Joe Cox, Stafford’s backup at quarterback. Whatever they decided to do I’m sure is the best for their situations and I support.”
Cox and Stafford are very close friends, but Cox insisted, “I have no idea [what Stafford’s decision is]. I can promise you I haven’t been told a thing.”
Sophomore left tackle Trinton Sturdivant said the team hasn’t been briefed on anything. In fact, he didn’t know there was a press conference scheduled until told by a reporter.
“We’re still waiting to find out ourselves,” he said. “If there’s a press conference I’ll be there. Either way I’ll be happy for them. I would like to have them both back but I’m not going to put any pressure on them. I don’t want to be selfish about it.”
Personally, I always believe these kids are turning pro. Guaranteed first round, guaranteed big money, that’s usually the way it turns out. I sat at press conferences for Worley and Henderson and Hampton and Hearst and Hastings and Champ Bailey and watched them all make the jump. Who can blame them? I do recall Bernard Williams, Mitch Davis and Eric Zeier’s pressers to say they were staying, though.
So it looks like some answers on Georgia’s future are on the way today. You think both those guys are going to the big leagues? Think they’re ready?

I really hate to see Moreno go, but Stafford can go. All he is going to do is make some NFL coach’s very angry when they see him throw bonehead, game changing picks. Stafford is showing that he is to stubborn to listen to or realize what people are saying about another year in college to try and see if it is possible to get the “between the ears thing straight”. Oh well good luck on whatever crappy pro team, with their crappy OL that picks you. As for Moreno, I’m afraid he’s the only tailback in Athens at the moment. The two that backed him up did not even show Thomas Brown type talent, much less serious contending SEC talent. Unfortunately according to the recruiting services the Ealey kid has speed problems, so how “SEC” he will turn out to be surely remains to be seen. I really like Joe Cox, but I’m afraid he won’t get much help from a running game.

are you serious? Stafford can leave! listen to what your saying. if stafford leaves were screwed. royally screwed. stafford is the leader of this team and quiet possibly the best quarterback to ever play at georgia. I mean think about it, the past two seasons have been learning years for staff. he has had to grow with the team and the offence. he knows the team and the offence now. think about what we as fans have had to go through an now he is ready to explode. if he leaves were going to have to go through all that again with another qb. an i like joe cox but he isnt staff. an that aint good. staff. has really came on this yr. we should all hope he comes back. i want both of them to come back but it would be better for the team if stafford comes back, if we dont have a leader that knows this offence an can make the kinda passes stafford can make the running game isnt gonna take us all the way.

… Stafford’s parents moved to Athens from Dallas when he arrived 3 years ago and have been struggling financially ever since. If this is true, it is basically a foregone conclusion that he would leave now. Hope both of them make the right decision that is best for THEM.

Redwolve321….You know who has the most wins at QB for Georgia…Greene. Cox can lead the DAWGS just like Greene. I am more worried about Moreno. Who can replace Moreno? I think Stafford could use one more year at Georgia though and I would be happy to have him. I think Moreno could be a great NFL back NOW. It will be sad to see both leave with our line coming back, but good luck to both.

Staffords parents struggling financially? Please, he is from The Woodlands in Texas one of the more affluent areas in America. His parents would not have made a move like that unless they were sure they could financially afford it. Good grief. Stafford leaves due to the fact the QB class this year is terrible.
Moreno is gone. Moreno at 21 and considering the short lifespan of an NFL runningback needs to capitalize on draft stock. I cannot blame Moreno ar all.
I am fine with having Cox as our QB next season. Remember it was JC who brought us back against Colorado two seasons ago. He will manage the game and make the plays when needed.
Good luck to both!

Stafford is gone. Moreno stays. I think Bradford comes out next year along with Sanchez from USC with McCoy from Texas which in turn affects Stafford and his draft spot. Stafford goes this year as the top drafted QB.
-Whoever says they would take Joe Cox over Stafford should have their head checked out. Does he make Bone head throws….yeah….but who doesn’t. He is a top 10 probably top 5 pick with about 60 million and 30-40 of that garunteed. What would you do?
-KM to me is a different story. Is he full of himself like some one posted above???? Maybe. But he loves the spot light and next year would be the biggest fish in the pond. Me thinks he stays and leaves next year. I see KM as a late 1rst round to back of 2nd round pick. With another great year, along with the kid from Iowa and U-Conn leaving KM can improve his draft status very much with a return. However there is always a risk of injury…but KM looks like he has tons of fun out there.
It would be nice if they both stayed no doubt…I think everyone would agree about that…..but to get 1 out of 2 would be really GREAT. Hope I’m wrong and they both stay….but I’ll take 1 out of 2 and me thinks that 1 is KM.
GOOD LUCK TO BOTH GUYS.

I hope neither leave, but I’m thinking they both will. If anyone could benefit at all from staying, it’d be Stafford getting another year of experience up and being the guaranteed #1 quarterback pick next year (plus he wouldn’t be playing for the Detroit Lions). Moreno probably should go since he’s a running back and those knees only have so much work in them. Better get the money while it’s there and while he’s uninjured.
That being said, I think we’ll be fine next year if/when both leave. If Moreno does leave, I think Richard Samuel will step up. He seems like he has the “it” factor moreso than King. QB wise, would probably be Murray and Logan Gray fighting it out.

Why is CMR involved in the press conference if they are leaving? I don’t recall (though I could be wrong) him at a press conference when others left early or there even being press conferences when others left early. That fact alone makes me wonder…Having said all of that, I think Knowshon is probably gone.

Stafford is not even close to ready. He will be another Jeff George, unless he lucks out and Bradford and Mark Sanchez both get drafted before him.
He needs a year or two to sit and watch. He is not even in the same zip code as Matt Ryan, and if he gets thrown on the field for a team like Detroit next year, he will never recover.
Good luck to him. I think we will be better off with a QB who cares about winning and does not have a blasé attitude about the program. David Greene could not throw the 20 yard out route but I would take him over Stafford every day.
Knowshon is ready. He is a super, super football player. He is a great blocker and receiver in addition to his running skills. We will miss him a lot. I just hope he does not land with the Saints or the Bucs, as I do not want the Falcons to have to face him.

Both will leave. Knowshon will be a star while Stafford will struggle mightily with a poor team as he is asked to do more than he is ready to do. If Stafford could go to a decent team and be brought along slowly he would do great, but that is not what is going to happen. He will be thrown into the fire and be expected to lead a last place team to the playoffs by himself. Matt Ryan has set the bar high and Stafford will be unrealistically expected to exceed it.

I think they are both gone. Stafford could use another year at the college level. He’s a top 5 pick this year with Tebow, McCoy and probably Sanchez staying another year. The timing is right for Stafford to go. I think Mpreno made up his mind a long time ago that he will be going. Hope I am wrong. His energy and leadership will be be missed. Samuel and King will be good backs and I am interested to see what Cox or Grey can do at qb. The O line will be good, I just hope the D will improve.

Stafford and Moreno are both projected as first round picks, that means the time is now. You attend college to place yourself in a position to earn a good living making as much money as you possibly can. These young men have nothing else to prove at the college level, even if we think they do the NFL says they are ready. Good Luck to both of them on the next level, I don’t expect to see either of them in Athens next year unless they are visiting during their off week in the NFL.

If the Stafford’s are indeed strapped for cash as the above post mentions, you can’t blame him for going pro. Their money problems will be over whether I think he’s ready for the NFL or not, obviously. I wish him the best of luck. For Richt however, things are just now beginning to become difficult. The people are not going to get out of his ear anytime soon. He now has the task of becoming a better football team, minus these playmakers. Hopefully someone will step up and provide a spark, possibly Carlton Thomas? I saw a post somewhere saying this kid put on a show in bowl practice. You are right as rain about David Greene. As I said I wish Stafford all the blessings as he goes forward, but that being said I am not going to sit here and give him the “Best Quarterback Ever at Georgia Award”. I would take Greene or Eric Zeier anyday with a stout defense over Stafford. They did not turn the ball over a fraction of what Stafford has, and I believe both were far better team leaders for UGA. I think most Georgia people will now still expect Richt to produce even without them. In Moreno’s case, Georgia people feel more cheated because we only had him on the field for two years, and fans never had anything to whine about concerning Moreno’s play in those two years. That is other than some complaining about him taking himself out of games. They are not thinking about the fact that most of his yards the hard way due to the inexperience on the OL. Many fans, and I mean large donors, are just not impressed lately with Richt’s continuous pointing out his ten win seasons, when nearly all of his seasons contained the losses to the very teams that have kept him from playing for the national title. Everyone who knows anything about the SEC championships he won were due to UF losing to someone other than UGA to get him there. I know that it is a good thing for Georgia that the coaching staff stays in place, but the bottom line is the coach’s don’t play a down on the field. Some of the folks complaints about the lack of recruiting a running back behind Knowshon appear to be well founded from what I’ve seen on the field. This year 2009 will either prove Richt as a bigtime coach, or not.

both played well and both deserve good careers, i wish em well staying or going, and those of you who are critical of stafford, please , he got hit often against florida either due to poor blocking or an iffy game plan that didn’t mix it up, whatever reason, that was the only game the offense didn’t score enough to win. stafford can’t play defense and neither could our regulars on defense, we give up 45 to the insects and bugs from atlanta, and 41 to alabama and we’re gonna lose. good luck stafford and moreno best wishes from this dawg and thanks for the memories

NO college quarterback should jump to the NFL early! They are not ready. an additional year of starting 13 games is invaluable. Matthew Stafford should stay.
Moreno can play in the NFL right now, but with a more experienced line next season, he could win the Heisman Trophy.

I hate to say it but for the good of the program, Stafford needs to go and Knowshon needs to stay. Cox has waited and knows the system. Richt will probably use Logan to run more of a spread style offense….two QB system. That should add another dimension giving us the “change” that was expressed by Evans. This can only help in recruiting QBs in the future. Who knows, maybe we have a year like the Vols had after Manning went pro.

I think both are gone and given the potential change in the rookie salaries over the coming year I think it is a wise business decision. If these guys were born and bred die hard red and black dawgs I’d be disappointed for their lack of loyalty to the team and the university, but these guys came to Athens to get the training and prep work done to get themselves NFL $. They’ve done that, and good for ‘em. I’d love for them to stay and personally believe another year would do Stafford a lot of good but, due to the aforementioned expected changes it would be silly for them to do so. As far as next year goes…I think RB position is up for grabs, but Andy in Ohio and anyone else out there who has QB questions, rest assured that Joe Cox is the starting QB next year. He certainly can give it away, but a family member on the field day to day says with some certainty the Logan Gray will be fighting with the incoming freshmen for the backup spot. That is the ONLY fight for the spot next year.

dawg through and through…the D did not give up all those points to the bugs. Remember the first half, when we were dominating, and Stafford threw one of the worst passes I have ever seen in all of my football watching experience?
We were cruising in that game until that moment, and as was Staff’s m.o., he gave the opponent hope.
That throw was very emblematic of his career in Athens. NFL fans are much, much less forgiving than we were. I sincerely hope, for Staff’s sake, that Bradford and Sanchez come out this year.

With Detroit picking first and Kansas City picking third, Stafford will get picked in the first hour of the draft. That means he would be leaving $30 million on the table by coming back. In spite of his UGA education, he isn’t that dumb.

Look at two of the people he spoke with - Cutler and Manning. They both returned for the senior seasons. He also spoke the the younger Manning at the Manning qb camp who also returned for his senior season. I also hope he took into consideration that he could possibly wind up in Detroit. As for Knowshon, the running back class should be deep for this draft and he would benefit from another year. He loves it in Athens and his grandmother I believe wants him to stay. My heart says that Stafford will run for the money which will result in a loss of respect from me. Knowshon not so much so. He does not need another year to improve unlike Stafford who would greatly benefit from another year in college. I guess we will see what happens.

Stafford is way overrated. Good riddance Mr. Underachiever. I loved Knowshon early in his career, but after seeing him consistently remove himself from games, I grew very tired of him. I wanted to embrace him as the next Herschel, but Herschel was willing to carry the dang ball as many times as Vince would give it to him. Knowshon was either too poorly conditioned, or too worried about injury, to play more than 2/3 of a game.

I read above where someone thinks CMR will use Logan Gray to use some spread plays. I don’t see that. I don’t see that Creativity in CMR or Bobo. We are a dull , boring offense. Before you all explode, Stafford and Knowshon and two pretty special wideouts made that offense work. Three of those will be gone next year. How many times have all of you seen us get the ball back with a small lead with 3-4 minutes left and ALL WE NEED TO DO IS MAKE A FIRST DOWN TO RUN THE CLOCK OUT. WE JUST ABOUT ALWAYS HAVE TO PUNT. THAT’S COACHING. We play not to lose, not to win late in games. We will not throw on 3rd and 8 to save our lives, or play action on FIRST DOWN. Nope, up the gut 3 times for 3 or 4 yards. Let’s see what new blood brings !

Good luck to both these kids with whatever decision they make. IMO I think Stafford should stay and get that extra year under his belt if he wants to be an impact QB in the NFL. He will end up in Detroit or KC and have an uphill battle. I don’t know about KC but (and don’t laugh) Detroit wasn’t as bad as that 0-16 record indicated. They played hard all year and were competitive in a lot of those games. Think Miami last year. One good GM, No Millen, a new eager coach and Detroit will be back to 9-7 no time. Stafford is from Highland Park near Dallas. You can afford to do that AND invest with Madoff Securties and still live the high life. Right now Bradford is the only QB that might go before Stafford. Nobody else this year or next (Sanchez, Harrell, McCoy) would go before him in the draft. There is at least one team a year that needs a QB high in the draft.
Moreno, plays like a champion, 100% hustle, no brakes. A couple of 1300 yard years? And you guys don’t like that? You ar crazy. We haven’t seen a back like that since you know who. If he will definitely go on the first round he should go. IF there is a possibilty of slipping to the 2nd round he should come back and next year be a definite top 5 pick. I like the kid and the way he plays the game.
We will miss them if they leave, don’t kid yourself. Stafford when he is on can be awesome. Moreno when fired up ignites the entire team. If you guys leave good luck.

From listening to Stafford’s interviews its clear he understands the value of having a back like Knowshon & he knows that together there a dynamic duo. Due to that it seemed obvious to me that there decision’s would partially be based on what the other one does. Stafford was a different QB this year but I was hoping to see this progression last year in my opinion he needs another year of seasoning. Being that an RB can play in college or the NFL if they can pick up the blocking schemes on passing down, Knowshon is ready but could benefit from a another year of conditioning. When you start mulling over staying here’s the issues for each if they stay but the other goes: Stafford – He’ll have AJ & Michael Moore to the thrown too along with some emerging targets & incoming stud recruits (Marlon Brown & Orson Charles) that would be influenced by his staying. BUT are Caleb & Samuel ready to carry the load? Moreno: depending on who the QB is early in the season he could be the focal point of the offense & get most of the carries which would be a year of wear & tear on is RB life span whereas he could be paid for it while sharing the load on a NFL team. IF they both stay then neither has those issues but they’ll finally have a seasoned OL to black for them. To me it’s telling that there having this press conference together with CMR & Matt’s dad. Could it be that there staying because they love UGA, CMR, CMB & want to try to accomplish the unfinished business?

Both players have given me a great deal of satisfaction during their days at UGA, and I will miss them if they decide to leave. While some bloggers harp on the “boneheaded” throws MS made during his career, I remember those that he made and completed. He is a great quarterback. And KM provided numerous moments on the field that I will remember. I hope they both stay, but if either or both decide to leave, I say thanks for the memories and good luck.

Either way, I don’t blame them for leaving and if they do, good luck to them! However, I also would not blame them for staying.

Hey if they leave, we load up again, Cox will do fine, he knows the system. we have quality backs, plus we have two QB’s coming in. Both guys will be forgotten in two years. Staff dad is not driving from Dallas to listen to his son say I’m staying. I would love for them both to stay and improve and being guranteed top 3 draft choices next spring.

Did you not read about the fact that Stafford talked to his neighbor Troy Aikman. You can’t be Troy Aikman’s neighbor and be poor living in Athens. And I would hope that Moreno hasn;t been in class in last several weeks since there hasn’t been any class in about 4 weeks! If he hadn’t been there during the last few weeks and missed his exams then he would have been ineligible for the bowl game and i think i remember seeing him play that game.

News from CBS Sportsline, according to sources, that both of them leaving for the Draft as well. I agree, why would they hold a news conference saying they are staying. Also, why is Matt’s dad driving to Athens today from Dallas? I guess to be with his son when he announces he is going pro. Coach Richt has been at most news conferences when his players go pro except for those who waited to the last minute when Coach was out on Recruiting trips.

How many NFL teams have a qb better than Matthew Stafford? Not Detroit or KC. How many NFL teams have $75 million to throw at a qb? Look at what the Falcons gave Matt Ryan. Stafford is a lot better at this stage of his career than Ryan. hopefully, he will get on a team where 42 points will win a game. The only hope we have is that KC will not give Stafford $75 million. Maybe that is what Mike Hagen is telling John Stafford.

I assume most of you guys attended college and some graduated???
How many of you would have now or ever turned down an opportunity to give up your senior year and take a job that would Guarantee you at least 20 million the first 5 years on said job? Especially taking into consideration that if you wait another year, there may be a chance that that opportunity may never present itself again!
Stafford and Moreno are gone…I personally wish them the very best.
From a UGA football perspectivee, I do wish that both could have played at least one year behind a seasoned OL. They would have been REALLY special. Next year and for the immediate future UGA will have one of the best OLs EVER. And our DL will be much improved with the return of Owens, Adkins, Weston, and Tyson.
I could go on and on, but let it suffice to simply say that any of you posters on here that would harbor a grudge, or as one poster said, would lose respect for Stafford if he leaves for the NFL…..You my friends have a problem and need to get things in their proper perspective!!!!

Pre-combine rumor has it that Detroit prefers Bradford and Kansas City prefers Stafford. Not surprising Matty spoke with a Chiefs scout. He’ll sit behind Brodie Croyle until Brodie gets hurt, and then he gets tossed into the fire. Having Larry Johnson to have the ball off to is somewhat appealing. Minnesota is also interested in trading up to the #2 pick to get a QB. That would seem to be the ideal situation for MS, and probably what he’s hoping for.
By mitch

Many in Detroit want Stafford to stay. Not because they don’t like him, though some don’t - because they want the LT Smith instead. A bigger need. Either way Stafford would sit next season in Detroit anyway, a year to learn the offense. A 4th year in College isn’t the only way to improve your game.

ramble on - GT Troll who simply can’t get UGA out of his simple mind! :SMIRK:
and now on with the topic of discussion…
If Stafford has any notion on succeeding at the NFL level, he can NOT go to the Lions. Just can’t. Now, if he somehow goes to K.C. there will be an opportunity, when they get a good GM, fire Herm and hire someone like Josh McDaniel from the Pats. Plus your competition is Tyler Tighpen, (who is useful in fantasy football but little else).
Matthew Stafford, if you go sir you need to pray you go to K.C. NOT Detroit where young QB’s go to “die” and be known as busts, or journeyman. I sure do hope MATTHEW had that talk with former Falcon Joey Harrington about being a rookie QB in Detroit and their sorry a&& Lions.
Moreno needs to go. He is ready. There is nothing in the college game that will make him a better player. Shelf life of an NFL RB much shorter than for a QB. Moreno best of luck in the NFL.

OK! We got it Tech Fans! You won this year. What about the previous 8 years & the series record? Whenever GT, SC or Clemson beat UGA it’s a monumental event for them because it RARELY happens! So enjoy this one while it last because that’s the best D you’ll see PJ have at GT. He’ll have a hard time replacing the guys that are leaving & the new guys will not have the benefit of practicing against a regular O the most of their college careers. The O works but the passing game needs to be developed. I still don’t get why PJ doesn’t add a shotgun package especially given the fact that he touts his O is like FL’s & RichRod’s except for they run it from under center. On the surface of things it looks like Tech will take a step back next year. For UGA a lot will depend on today’s announcements but if we can avoid the injury bug next year we’ll still be in good shape.

But seriously, I would like to see Moreno return for one more season. I don’t think we have another back with his abilities on scholarship right now. Stafford on the other hand I’m not so worried about. Don’t get me wrong, kid has MAD skills. Strong arm, quick release, good foot work & decent reads but I am still unsure of his leadership skills. David Greene skill wise was no where near Stafford but he was a great leader. I’d like to see Joe Cox under center just one year to see what he can do.

I would be absolutely shocked if both Stafford and Moreno stay for another year. If I am pretty much guaranteed first round pick…you would be crazy not to go and take the money. If I were 21/22 and had the opportunity to be set for life financially, I would take it. Guess what? You would, too!!!! Dawg fans, where is the faith? We are UGA, we don’t REBUILD, we RELOAD!!!! We were good before Stafford and Moreno, and we will be fine when they are gone and are doing well. Isn’t that what we want for our guys who come here? I am quite sure this is what we tell our recruits…come to UGA, be successful for yourself and UGA, go to the NFL and become successful on the field and in the bank!!!! I wish them nothing but the best as they move on…this time next year, we will almost have forgotten about these guys while we talk about Murray, Cox, Ealey, Samuel, King, Smith, or whoever takes these guys’ places!!!! Once we get our O-line healthy, it won’t matter who is in the backfield with the guys we have. We will be just fine. GO DAWGS!!!!

Here is what espn.com reported:
Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno, who led the SEC in passing and rushing this season, respectively, are expected to announce Wednesday that they will enter April’s NFL draft.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the players’ decisions said Moreno was definitely leaning toward entering the NFL draft, but said Stafford had wrestled with his decision for several days.
Stafford, a junior from Highland Park, Texas, might be the first player selected in the draft, according to Todd McShay, director of college football scouting for Scouts Inc. who also does NFL draft analysis for ESPN.
The strong-armed passer set a Georgia single-season record with 25 touchdown passes this year. He threw for 3,459 yards this season, the second-best total in school history, and ranked 15th nationally in pass efficiency.
Moreno, a sophomore from Bedford, N.J., ran for 1,338 yards and 16 touchdowns before the Bulldogs’ 24-12 win over Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl. He became the first Georgia player since 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker to run for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons.
Moreno was redshirted at Georgia in 2006, so he is eligible to enter the draft after playing only two seasons with the Bulldogs.
Moreno is expected to be one of the top two running backs selected in the NFL draft, along with Ohio State junior Chris “Beanie” Wells, should he decide to enter. Wells hasn’t yet announced whether he’ll return to school for his senior season.
Moreno leaves Georgia with 2,769 career yards rushing with 32 touchdowns (30 rushing, two receiving), not including the Capital One Bowl performance.

It would seem that Stafford’s father driving from Dallas to Athens would be a tipoff on what Stafford is planning to do. He would probably benefit from another year at the college level, as most 3-year QB’s have not done well in the pros, but who can turn down that money? Moreno should go pro. The lifespan of an NFL RB is only about four years, on the average. UGA will be fine. We will have a much more experienced and, and hopefully, deeper O-line next year. I think Cox will be fine and he was a big winner at Independence H.S. Not sure about TB. Unless King or Samuel rapidly improves, this position looks average at best. Maybe the defense will be better, can it be any worse? We score 42 against Tech and still lose?

Some of you are asking whether it’s true that Staff’s parents moved to Athens. Some of you have even mentioned in your blog that his Dad is driving in from Dallas for the news conference. Why would he be driving in from Dallas if he lived in Athens? Duh.
We want these guys back and you can be on one side or the other in the 4-way guessing game. Certain facts can be cited to say that they are staying, other facts are evidence that they are going. If they have kept this secret thus far, why would they tell sports news and/or writers that they are going? Those guys are playing a guessing game as well, but with a few more facts than we have(like being able to call the NFL teams and ask about their conversations with these guys or their families. Schlabach is my favorite writer/broadcaster in all this business, but this time I hope he is wrong. He has been wrong before. Like when he picked us over Bama,FU and Tech.
Folks, their records here are what they are depending on how you want to characterize their triumphs and tradgedies on the field. I was hoping that a red and black revenge might be on their minds. I was hoping they wouldn’t just let the gauntlet lie. My hope was to see them back as our Team Bulldogs, not as two stars that every reporter will try to fill pages in deference to the entire team. My hope is they will remain as playing Dawgs one more year because they see the challenge as the fans do. The Bulldog Nation will survive since this too will pass. I just wish we didn’t like them so much as good people. No matter what they do today, they will always be known as good Dawgs as well.

Stafford is from Highland Park area around Dallas one of the most affluent areas in the country. I don’t think money is an issue. Roger Goodell came out two weeks ago and said the guarantee signing bonus issue would not go into effect until after next season so that should not be an issue either. Personally I beleive Moreno is going pro and considering he is a running back that is the best thing for him. I do think Stafford would be better suited to wait a year and gain a little more polish before turning pro. Injury is less likely to impair his pro prospects. But good luck to both of them whatever they decide. The Dawgs will be alright in the long run.

Responding to yesterday’s thread:
I have been on record here as a major Richt supporter and still am, but I have to completely disagree with him that this may be their finest coaching job. It was not!
They were outcoached by Georgia Tech plain and simple. Who had the better athletes (even with the injuries) Tech or UGA? Who had two weeks to prepare while the other team did not, Tech or UGA? Who was playing at home?
As a coach, give me the team with the much more talented roster playing at home with 2 weeks to prepare. Let’s face it Richt and company were outcoached in that one.

Uh….players have held press conferences to announce they were returning. Eric Zeier, Ben Watson, David Pollack are just a few Dawgs who have done this. Peyton and Eli Manning did it too. So there is precedence in calling a conference to say you are coming back. However, with the media reports coming out that they are leaving and the fact that Knowshon called a press conference as well is telling enough that at least he is leaving. Why else would a redshirt sophmore call a press conference? I say Stafford is leaving as well. Good luck to both of them. I hope both NFL careers are long and prosperous.

Chip—Is there any chance the AJC could start an “adult only” football blog? In order to post on it you would need to prove you are over 25 and have an IQ above room temperature. I realize that would cut our usual cast of characters by at least 2/3rds but you could also institute a K-1 section for them to have their verbal food fights and potty-mouth exchanges. Please bring it up at the next editorial meeting.

i think they are both gone - it’s the wise decision. both are to big for Georgia, now…particularly Knowshon.
my biggest question heading into next season is who can deliver he ball to AJ Green. Is Cox’s arm that much stronger than Joe T’s? i have no idea.
would like to see Gray make it a battle for starting QB.

In terms of coaching, there were two people on Richt’s staff that did a fantastic job this year. One was Searels, the guy lost 3 starting left tackles and while the offensive line play may have been inconsistant from time time, anyone would rate his job with the OL last year and this year as fantastic.
The other unit on the team that did great was the wide receiving corps. Ironically, coach Eason deserves a lot of praise. I was on him pretty hard a couple of years ago for the drops and not developing players, but his results this year were very good.

I hate to get overconfident and perpetuate hype, but barring injury Stafford would absolutely dominate next year if he came back. Please stay!!!
Knowshown has absolutely nothing to gain by coming back unfortunately. I would love to have him but I would question his sanity if he decided to come back. He won’t be able to top what he’s done unless Richt gives him 300+ carries next year, and that ain’t happening. On the up side I will have a favorite NFL player to cheer for next year.
And for all those questioning the abilities of King and Samuel, you have very short memories. Knowshon did not emerge until midway through the 2007 season after Brown went down. Before then, morons like yourselves were wondering whether he was as good as advertised. Neither King nor Samuel have had opportunity to show their stuff with the spot duty they have been given this year. Relax.

Both could benefit from another year of college ball. Stafford has improved every year but hasn’t reached his full potential. Moreno is incredible against lesser opponents. Then again if the money’s there, take it before you blow a knee. I really like both of these guys, but the dogs will be just fine without them. I have slways been suspicious about ego-driven dissention due to the star power hype, anyway. Stay or go, UGA needs teamwork and discipline not swagger and hype.

ESPN is reporting that they both will leavefor the pros. I wish we could see them again for another year, but we will not. Now its time to start looking at Joe Cox, Logan Gray, or even Aaron Murray. Will Calib King learn how to pick up the blitz or will Richard Samuel be the vext great tailback at Georgia? I am in favor Joe Cox getting the nod> He has all the tools and he may even be a little more accurrate than Stafford who constantly over threw receivers

Fortunate enough to have a job that allows me to stay close to the game and the opportunity to observe a lot of SEC and ACC practices, I can tell you that Logan Grey can flat play. Reminds me of Charlie Ward. Good arm. Acurate. 4.3 speed. UGA will be fine at the QB position no matter who plays. Not too many schools have the QB talent as deep as UGA and now you got Mettzenberger and Murray coming in. QB is the least of the worries in Athens.

Financially they should both turn pro now. Stafford would benefit from another year at Georgia, but with the uncertainty of the new collective bargaining agreement next year signing bonuses in 2010 are at risk.
Moreno should go because of the risk of injury and short working life of running backs.
Georgia will be fine next year even if we do lose these two guys. As great as they are others will step up and do a good job.

It’s actually kind of sad, knowing these poor souls have to go home to a life of mediocrity day in & day out. No woman would have them, internet porn & re-runs of Star Trek are the only things keeping them from eating a bottle of pills. It’s okay guys, I mean Georgia Tech will forever be irrelevant to the Dawgs. Winning once every 8 years or so…. But things are looking up, they almost won the first 5 minutes of their bowl game. And if not for that strong Virginia team they may have won their division. Well, probably not but oh well. Looks like Tech will be at least 4th or 5th best team in the ACC with Miami & FSU getting these great recruiting classes. It will be okay, go across the street to the varsity see how many footlongs you can swallow whole.

On ESPN site, if it means anything:
Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno, who led the SEC in passing and rushing this season, respectively, are expected to announce Wednesday that they will enter April’s NFL draft.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the players’ decisions said Moreno was definitely leaning toward entering the NFL draft, but said Stafford had wrestled with his decision for several days.

exNFLplayer, thank you for the QB post. Not many on here have taken a look at our backup QB’s. Every single one of them could start for 95% of D-1 schools. Plus the talent coming in. Joe Cox is no slouch either, too bad he won’t have his buddy MoMass to throw to. Georgia will be fine at the QB position if Stafford leaves. Tee Martin effect is what I would hope for. As far as RB’s, Samuel is the kid. He left HS and enrolled early and is only like 18 yrs olds going into his sophomore year. King will do just as well with more PT. Moreno is a special back that UGA was fortunate has for two years.

First of all, I offer my congratulations to both Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno. Although they didn’t win championships and this season didn’t go as most of us expected, they played hard for the Dawgs and I think true Bulldog fans should say thanks and wish them well as they move on with their lives. Secondly, I don’t understand folks being upset that either leaves. Say you’re a sophomore journalism student at UGA right now and the New York Times (or the AJC) comes to you and guarantees you $10 million/year for five years. Are you going to stay in school so you can learn more about the 5 W’s, or are you going to sign on to cover fires and cop chases? I think we all know the answer. Same for Stafford and Moreno. Regardless of how well they may do as pros, the NFL is a JOB, just like your job. The idea, as on your job, is to get as much money as you can as soon as you can. The thought that somehow a fourth year of college football would somehow make them All-Pro players, while leaving early dooms them to disaster is irrelevant at this point. Their future performance doesn’t matter right now. They’ll be drafted — and signed — based on what they did at UGA. So let’s just take a deep breath everyone. There has always been life after at UGA. There was life after Sinkwich, life after Walker, life after Greene and there will be life after Moreno and Stafford. And one other thing. Matthew Stafford is from HIGHLAND PARK, TEXAS. That’s the same town where current President George Bush plans to live after he leaves the White House. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also resides there. I can assure you all that the residents of Highland Park (and it is it’s own self-governing municipality — it is NOT Dallas) are in no way poor. So please put this idea about Stafford’s parents “struggling financially” to rest. They could probably offer bailout packages to all of us.

dawgfacedboy, the scenario I see emerging there is an open competition in the spring with Cox #1 on the depth chart. I really think Logan Gray is the heir apparent because of the speed he brings to the position as well as his passing skills. He fits the Richt profile and adds a potentially new dimension to the pro style play action offense UGA runs. He can get outside the pocket by design and put additional stress on a defense. He has been in a similar situation to D.J. Shockley behind David Green. If not for Matt Stafford, Gray would have probably been the starter last year. Unless Cox has some mental edge I really think Gray is the eventual starter. Don’t get me wrong. Joe Cox is a quality QB and if he were to open the season as the starter and wins he could be difficult to dislodge. But I can’t see Richt wasting another year of talent like Gray’s. He was keeping him happy this year finding things for him to do on STs. Gray starting for 2 years also gives UGA continuity at the position and allows the QBs coming in to mature before being tossed into the ring.

Secondly, for all of these people who are cursing the two for leaving let me ask you a question. When Stafford and Moreno both make it in the first round and start playing on Sundays how many are going to say screw those guys for leaving early? Nope, everyone will say, “Yeah he was a Dawg.” Don’t hate on the guys who gave us some great games and a great Georgia/Florida memory that will forever be bulldog lore. First off, this is AMERICA. 1st Ammendent - Freedom of speech.
I have been on these blogs many times. I am sick and tired of these idiots coming on here simply to stir the sh#tpot. I use profanity on a daily basis & will continue to do so while in the midst of Tech, Bama & Florida fans.
If you Tech, Bama & Florida fans have a problem with that then maybe you should go to a Tech, Bama or Florida site.
Real Dawg Fan - If I offended you in any way I want to offer my sincerest appologies, I am at the end of my rope when it comes to dealing with these people. I simply want to come on here & blog about UGA football with UGA football fans without having to hear 45-42, 31-0 or 49-10 being thrown in my face constantly

Judging from the pictures taken at Talledega a couple years back mental edge would probably fall to Logan. Of course those proverbial 12 ounce curls builds arm strength.

If Stafford does not return and it appears he will not, dog fans we need to deduct 3 wins from next seasons expected win total. I was expecting with Stafford 10-2 and possibly 11-1. Without, I see 8-4 and possibly even 7-5.

I hope Paul Johnson doesn’t try to return all those 9 win rings after Tech goes 5-7 next year. He’s a big enough a-hole to do it. I sure don’t want to be one of those idiots dumb enough to get caught with all that Tech stuff nobody wants to buy every year. But thinking about it. I am a little stupid to have given a 1 year money back satisfaction guarantee on those rings. Who ever heard of giving rings to a bunch a 9 win losers anyway?

BBALL ??? nope, i haven’t supported UGA hoops since a certain crook named Harrick was hired. I predicted ehat eventually happened years before it did. I turn blue in hoops season, you know, when in rome……..
I predict UGA gets serious about defense next year with some players returning and an OL that can actually run block keeping the defense off the field. Cox or Gray will be fine.

RAMBLE ON I’m real sorry you have to wait for the next decade for your next scheduled win over UGA. I hear the pressure was really on to drop Tech and find another in state team that could provide UGA with a real rivalry. Maybe Georgia Southern, the team Tech is terrified to play. 13-37 against UGA since 1964 doesn’t really qualify as the stuff rivalries are made of I don’t think. And maybe Tech could pick up Georgia State in 2010. You know. A team they can beat more than once a decade.

Good luck to both of them, I acutally hope for Stafford Detroit takes Bradford, Detroit will be a mess forever.
Moreno, the way he cuts, he made the right decision, he’ll injure a knee sooner rather than later.
Stafford had a nice career, would have been nice to have gotten an SEC title but in fairness he played behind a patchwork line his whole career. It was a missed opportunity for the program. Stafford’s a pro, he says and does the right things and that will translate well during his career. Wish he had that Tebow passion. I knew Stafford was leaving when his knee got bent the wrong way in the early 4th quarter of the Michigan State game. He was lucky and smart not to press that luck coming back.
KM, nice career, wish he carried over last year to this year, he seemed to play it safe.
In terms of next year, I hope Logan puts in the time studying film this summer and throwing the ball because his quickness would be a nice dimension early on when he struggles with the SEC defenses.
Just with the info I have now, 2009 dogs 7-5.

Real Dawg fans’s man-up,we all want Stafford and Moreno to stay, but if the money is right, can you blame the young men!We thought we would hurt when Q.Carter left, then came Greene, and Sockley, and we won. We thought “Oh God’, When Greene left, and Shockley won a S.E.C. championship. Stafford renewed ,and reinvigorated us the next year after Joe T. had his chance, and we’ve won consistently. We’ve got two top 10 Q.B.’s in the country coming in this spring, and I can gaurantee you one is going to step up.Joe Cox can win given a chance, and Coach Bobo adjust the offense to fit his short short comings, which, by all accouts is his arm is’nt as strong as Stafford’s.Moreno on the other hand is going to be missed, not so much for just his running, but for his energy, attitude, and love of the game. The great one’s all love the game!Remember though, Caleb King, the number one back in the state, and number five overall, or Richard Samuels number ten in the nation overall. Dontavious Jackson, a Knowshon clone was reshirted this year. We are all anticipating the arrival of Washun Ealey, between the four of these backs, all that were ranked in the top twenty five players in there class, I think we will be O.K.Bulldog nation rise up and remember who we are, and what conference we come from, we are the Bulldogs, a perennial power and we expect to win, not like GT, who just hope to win. Dawg fans if they leave, wish Stafford, and Moreno the best, now let’s go get ready to hunker down. Click- Clack!

Well, Stafford wont be missed as much. Joe Cox is a 5th year senior and will do just fine. We’ll have A.J. Green and Michael Moore at wide receiver and Caleb King at running back…. that’s the problem. Caleb King has not proven much but we’ll have a really good o-line next year (knock on wood). In the midst of the Stafford/Moreno issure, a lot of Georgia fans have forgotten that we may be losing Asher Allen on D and also Ellerbe is departing. Those are two big time guys on D that will be missed. Cant wait to see what happens, sorry to you Moreno, you would have truly been the star next year without another player like Staff on the team and we could have ran for a BCS title again. Go Dawgs!!!

HC—Funny that you state the record since 1964. Why didn’t you go back to 1944? Was it because Tech won 14 of those 20 contests between ‘44 and ‘63 and it might make your 13 - 37 record not look so good? Hmmm! Granted, I am not happy with having only won two games in this decade, but you will not have an oh-so-easy time with Tech in the coming years. It’ll be much more interesting.

Last year: Lose to SC, blown out at UT, Sugar Bowl vs Hawaii (that’s Hawaii folks!).

Look I do wish them the best of luck but for me it’s not so simple to say, ok, it’s fine to leave, no problem, cause we as fans put alot of money in these players regardless of if they get it or not. That’s the reason why we go to games and pay so much money it’s to watch them play competitive football. I believe they should pay the school back by finishing their career when they sigh a full scholarship. Thats my opinion. $10,000 donations just for rights to tickets aren’t cheap, Sorry.

Well,
they are gone. I can’t blame either of them for this decision. However, I think they will probably look back on this years from now and regret that they didn’t stay, especially Stafford. You can always make more money but you will never have a chance to play your senior season to lead your team to a championship. There are things in life more valuable than money. Stafford will be remembered as a good QB who never won a championship. He will not even come close to the legacy of DJ Shockley or David Greene. Moreno - what could have been.

And so it happens. Knowshon was a Knowbrainer, good luck to you. You are a footballer. Stafford is a bit of a surprise. You don’t see QB’s bolting early very often, but good luck to you as well. Out of all of this, I’m really glad that Joe Cox is going to have a significant senior year. I have always been a fan of Joe and I really think we will have a chance to do great things with him at the helm. It would of been sad to see him ride the bench all his UGA career. Both gone, From Tech fan I wish them both luck, I would go if I could make that kind of $. Both were very good players but I can see where people get on to Stafford for some of the bad throws, but overall a very good QB. Knowshon is great and should have been given the ball 30 times a game, running and passing. I think he’s better then Wells and the RB from UConn. I think he’s better then Reggie Bush and he got drafted pretty high. Also UGA has nothing but 4 and 5 stars backing them up so they should be ok, coaching is their major issue, MR a nice guy but not a great game day coach. Bobo just avg coach.
Just hope GT can beat them 2 year in row, that would be sweeet.
oh and to all those dawg’n the GT fans chill out, I’ve been to Athens and seen your fan base and you really should not be calling out other teams fans. I was pumped to finally go to game in Athens thinking it would be something, that place is boring on game day. Yall need to learn how to have some fun and enjoy the time, it’s just a game, support your team good or bad. Sometime your players will make bad plays, it ok it happens, it not always the refs fault or the other extreme excuse

Joe Cox — it’s your turn! You are the leader of the offense. All you’ve done as a starter is win games (and you bailed Stafford out against Colorado). You’ll have a solid line, proven receivers and some raw talent at RB. Go out and win an SEC title and Georgia fans will be saying “Matthew who?”

DrFeelGood—If life was nothing but a football game, I suppose I would feel badly about Tech’s record against Georgia in football, but we all know at the end of the day that football is just a game. UGA attracts many players that Tech can’t touch due to academic standards. I’ll take my degree from Tech anyday over what I would have gotten at UGA, and I bet most of Tech’s players feel the same, regardless of football records. And by the way, the view looks mighty fine!

Just in case you missed it, Joe Cox just announced that he will be holding a fan greet and meet on the infield this spring at the Talladega 500. Note: Bring your own keg.
Exciting new turn for UGA football. Two great players who will do well at the next level.

UGA FINE NEXT YEAR…THEY ARE YOUNG BUT THEY WILL BE OK. THEY ARE LOADED WITH TALENT…YOU CAN’T BE MAD WITH MATT & SHON…THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE YEAR THEY WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, REMEMBER? IT DID NOT HAPPEN DUE TO POOR COACHING IF YOU ASK ME, BUT THATS JUST MORE PLAYERS UGA BRINGS IN THE NFL. UGA MAY NOT COMPETE FOR RINGS BUT IS SURELY A PRO FACTORY…GOOD LUCK GUYS.

To LEE - Yes I do. Caleb King rushed 12 times for 100 yards. I think Knowshon had about 60 on 8 or 9 carries. Until the missed blocking assignment by King resulting in a sack and fumble, I thought he was doing a very good job rushing the ball. After tha we never saw him again. I told my friend from PA that I liked King more than Moreno. Of course, on this blog that makes me crazy with some moronic cuss words added in my those unable to express themselves without using such words.

You can’t blame them, and they are actually pretty decent human beings as well.
I wish them well on Sunday’s especially Matt since he’ll probably be throwing to Calvin Johnson. Anybody want to see the spoon picture one more time?
Good riddance, that’s a lot of fire power.

Moreno and Stafford knew there was no way that they would win the sec title or nc title with this current staff.

Stafford will go #1 more than likely…top 10 for sure. YOshown will be between middle 1st & early 2nd (unless he tanks at the combine). We’ll miss them both, but Cox should be solid. I’m kind of worried about TB, but our OL will be much improved (plus Chapas is a offensive threat at FB…good potential). GO DAWGS!!!

I wish both of these guys the best in their NFL career. As a Tech fan, I am glad to see them go since Moreno’s talent and play style raised the level of everyone around him and Stafford’s talent spoke for itself. Best of luck to these two great players on draft day, they made the right business decision and that is how professional football should be approached.

Hey DA BOTTOM LINE: Got news for ya! The ACC has put more player in the NFL then the SEC (Sorry Education Conference). This is pretty sad considering the SEC graduation rate of atheletes is 17% and the ACC’s is 75%. You do the math if you know how to! LMFAO! GO JACKETS! 45-42, 67-62 is the exacta. Hey, at least you got the women’s gym mutts that are good. Also, you will never win 8 in a row over GT, so don’t even go there. RAMBLE ON!

Hate to see’em go. Good luck to them, though. Whatever team that takes Stafford is in for a little head-scratching over some of his passing decisions. He made some of the most confounding interceptions I’ve ever seen. Great raw talent, but Richt and Bobo never seemed to get his full attention. Moreno will be missed much more, as his back-ups showed nothing whatsoever this past season.
More than anything I hate the idea that UGA is now going to be thought first as a quasi-amateur program instead of a collegiate one. I realize that the program itself hasn’t changed (it’s always been quasi-amateur), but I regret that the perception of it has changed to the point that the University is okay with it.
As far as who will be the QB next year, I don’t think even Richt has an idea quite yet. I take that back; he might have an idea, but it’s way too early to tell anything without having seen those freshman QB’s even take a snap at this next level of play.

Stafford will be in a booth calling radio play by play within the next 5 years if he’s lucky. He will never be a starter in the NFL, he can’t run a pro offense…Moreno will be the League MVP at some point within that same 5 year span.

I think Stafford and Moreno will both do well in the NFL. I think Stafford is much more suited for the NFL than say Tebow no doubt.

I wish them well. With that kind of money involved and the risk of injury from another year it would be tough not to go.
Stafford is going to be a great one for a long time if he doesn’t get killed behind a bad offensive line. Stafford has rare skills. A true cannon, a quick release, pretty good wheels and he’s a tough kid.
I think Moreno’s a little dicier because his top end speed isn’t that great but with his cutting ability, moves and his hands he should do well.
It”s amazing how many people on these boards have been down on Stafford. Stafford wasn’t the Dawgs problem this year. Bad defense, sloppy play and injuries were.

After seeing th first half of the NC game, Stafford will be the first QB taken. Does Bradford have to look to the sideline for every play? Does he not know the check-offs or what plays to run according to Floridas formations. His coaches are making all of his decisions. Bradford played in a conference with very little defense, that is why he won the Heisman. Stafford will be the #1 pick to Detroit. As for Moreno, great balance, great heart, very determined. He and Wells will be the 1st 2 backs taken. Good luck guys

kneejerk, So your advice is not live in the past? Well the 42-45 fluke is in the past. Oh yeah and if we had played Tech last week instead of Michigan State, we would have avenged ourselves of the earlier fiasco.I guess ya’ll thought since you just got by us that you would coast past LSU.Forgot that LSU is still SEC, their not in that cripple league ya’ll are in. Stupidest move TECH ever made was To leave the SEC.
See you for your usual beatdown this year in Atlanta.

So Tebow is going to stay his senior year. He has achieved all one can in college, yet he is coming back… and Stafford takes off without doing squat.
Yeah, maybe the pundits’ claim that Stafford is more of a “pro-type” player should be considered…. but me, as much as I hate to say it, I think Tebow has more class in his left toe that Stafford does in his whole “powerful arm”.
I AM SO GLAD TO SEE STAFFORD GO! SAY HELLO TO ZEIER FOR ME!
