UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Richt, Bobo endorse Cox as QB

Hey folks. Sorry just getting back to you. Had some technical issues during the press conference for Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno that prevented a live blog and I stuck around a long while afterward to get some of the more detailed interviews regarding their decisions and the future.

In a nutshell, here’s what we found out:

Stafford got considerable feedback from NFL types, was projected by the NFL advisory board to be “likely a be drafted in the first round” (they don’t specify early or late). If you believe Moreno, he hasn’t submitted his paperwork yet — “I should have but I didn’t” — and really hasn’t talked to very many people from the league. “I talked to may family and my counselor about it the most,” he said. “I’m leaving early.”

So you’ve probably heard and read enough about that even if you didn’t watch the live simulcast of the press conference. The real interesting part of college football to me is it’s ever-changing. You’re always turning the page and getting a look at the next guy.

For what it’s worth, both Mark Richt and Mike Bobo gave a rousing recommendation to rising senior Joe Cox as the heir apparent. Logan Gray is a distant No. 2, Bobo said, and incoming freshmen Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger aren’t even on the radar yet.

“I know right now that Joe Cox is No. 1 on the depth chart,” Richt stated flatly. “Somebody will have to knock him out of that box.”

Said Bobo: “I think Coach made a good analogy with D.J. Shockley. The way he carries himself, a team guy. And Joe does a lot of things well.”

Of course, Murray, the ballyhooed quarterback from Tampa, is supposed to be the second coming of Stafford. And he and fellow frosh Mettenberger both checked into the dorms on Wednesday. So there will be competition.

Very reminiscent, I’d say, of a few years ago when Joe Tereshinki was the heir apparent, Blake Barnes was hanging around and Stafford and Cox were the young pups. Of course, that first year didn’t go so well.

So what do you think? What are the odds of Cox being the starter at Oklahoma State for the opener next season? What are the odds he’ll be the man come Game 12?

Hey, it’s never too early for a Quarterback Debate.

As I said on the other blog, I am glad to see Cox get his chance. He has paid his dues(like Tereshinski did)but I think he has more talent than Joe T. had. And he is a leader. I think he will do well.

Blake Barnes update please. How did he do this year at that Mississippi junior college? Did he graduate from that school? What are his plans?

Get ready for a year of off-color jokes with Cox as the QB.

Cox has earned the right to start. He’s got talent. We need to redshirt Murray and get him ready for the future.

Cox IMO will be more Shockley than Tereshinski. Cox did beat most if not all of Chris Leaks records at Independence HS. He can throw the football and should have a solid season for us.

We should all remember what happened when Manning left the Vols…a National Championship the next year…I am ready to see what Gray can bring to the offense…and of course Cox has certainly paid his dues, so good luck to both…we’ll be fine, we are deep at both positions.

Well…Stafford is going to ride the pine on a bad team and Moreno will find out quick the reality of the NFL but I wish them both well.

For the future…Cox is the only QB to throw for a TD against Florida and actually moved the ball well against the FL D that was still in there. I strongly recommend Cox to start and have Murrary and Mettenberger enjoy learning. I think we will be fine and look to win the SEC in the next two years with a NC in three.

Hey Chip

I think Cox will be a good QB, as much time as he’s spent on sidelines he should know the play book very well, Logan Grey is a good choice also, watched him play in the spring game and was suprised at his speed, he also threw a touchdown pass that looked pretty good too. Just hope CMR decides on one early instead of waiting until middle of season.

By Quarterback Debate??

January 7, 2009 5:26 PM | Link to this

Chip, are you kidding me?

Joe Cox will be fine, much closer to Shockley than Joe. T.

The only debate should be who will be our #2 quarterback because if Cox gets hurt Georgia will have QB issues. The backups are young and inexperienced.

The real debate is how Georgia will replace Moreno.

My only question is does Cox have as good of a relationship with his linemen as Bobo did? Will they hold the guy in the bar for Cox while he beats on him like Bobo’s did??

I hate to see MS and KS go. I wish them the best. If you do not look out for yourself no one else is. A person who does not wish them well is selfish. As for what next year holds for the Dogs only the Good Lord knows. Definitely I would like to win another championship, but I have learned what difference does it make ten years from now.

Remember this. Cox has never lost a football game in which he has touched the football. Never. He saved us against Colorado a few years ago when he came in and threw that long beautiful pass to the tight end in the end zone. Aaron Murray is the future or Mettenburger (sp?) But as of right now,,,,Support mr. Cox…He is “The Man”

ALl due respect to Joe T., but he sort of ‘inherited” his spot on the depth chart, and by his senior year, he had to be the guy to start the season. Going into that season, he was the only QB who’d seen action on our roster, right?

This is vastly different; Cox was a highly-recruited HS QB (he did toss aside many of CHris Leak’s records at Independence HS) and while he may not be as mobile and durable as Stafford, he also won’t need ot be, with a seasoned offensive line.

And a marginal QB can look great with sure-handed recievers. A.J. Green’s a phenom - a QB’s best-friend - and we have a stable of good young RBs. Somebody, or more than one, will emerge as our future star, and I have to think the slice of humble pie served to Caleb King will serve as the motivation needed to push him this offseason. He knows the opportunity’s there for him to be “the guy” for the first time since HS.

Folks are wringing their hands like we’re in a re-building mode, and I just don’t think that’s the case. We’re in re-load mode; next season’s team may/will have different strengths, but I think we’re going to see a vast up-tick in defense and special teams, with health and depth now, so here’s hoping we don’t have to chew our nails through shootouts, and can instead shut down opposing offenses and win on timely runs/throws/kicks.

GO DAWGS!

Murray is coming into the same situation as stafford. Except Tereshinski never had the credentials cox did and Murray is not being heralded by mel Kiper to be the number one pick coming out of high school.

No insult to Joe III, but Cox appears a much better QB from the limited duty we’ve seen him in. Cox is smart and has the physical tools to lead. Joe was smart but had a woeful arm.

It’s not likely that a freshman QB will start a game in 2009. Remember that Stafford became a freshman starter only AFTER Joe T. got injured. When Joe T. got healthy, he shared time with Stafford as the Dawgs lost enough games that Richt decided to do what was best for the Dawgs long-term and make Stafford the full-time starter. If Joe Cox stays healthy in 2009, he can probably hang onto the job all year. Also, Logan G has been here long enough that he should have no problem starting the year far ahead of the frosh on the depth chart.

Guys - Pay attention. In the article both Richt and Bobo make it about as clear as possible that Cox is the man. Looks like their minds are made up unless someone really steps up bit time - not likely.

Cox’ efficiency rating this year = 201.89. Stafford’s = 153.54.

Not to mention when Cox came in and literally pulled a miracle in the Colorado game in the fourth quarter. Who was the other QB in that game? Plus, I have never been impressed with Stafford’s leadership. I could be wrong, but I’m thinking Cox will be a team leader and team chemistry may well be better. Lack of that team chemistry explains our pitiful performances against both Alabama and Florida this year (IMHO).

Trust me on this, as a former coach, I am absolutely convinced that leadership is more important than raw talent. I believe David Greene proves that, as did a OB named Buck Belue back in 1980. Neither had anywhere near the raw talent Stafford has. However, both won championships. Neither one will ever be a NFL OB, but on the college level they excelled because they were leaders. Both DG and BB never had that deer in the headlights look I saw on Stafford more than once, usually while we were getting beat by a team with a QB with much less ability than Stafford.

As for Murray and Mettenger (sp?), it is not likely that a true freshman can come in and get the job done. We need to bring them along slowly.

I can’t believe that CMR would even consider Cox. I can see where BOBO the Bozo thinks Cox will help him. After losing the two best play makers on offense, GA will be in big trouble next year. You will finally see how big a clown BOBO the BOZO really is. I predict that GA will be 5 and 7 at the best next year. I won’t even get into Slick Willie the def. cor.

them leaving is bull and im p**. i dont see anybody on the roster that will rush for 1000 yards or pass for 2500, so unless we have the highest scoring defense theres ever been, we dont have a shot in the dark. im a big bulldog fan, but its hard to be optimistic. everybody knows the run game opens up the pass. so lets look at the backs. king was a back up this year and had only 46 carries. when Moreno was Thomas browns back up, he had 256 carries. i dont see a very good transition for the run game. heres how its gonna work. cox will be the starter at the beginning of the season ready to prove himself. he will go 1-2 and they’ll replace him like Stafford did tereshinki. the next guy will come and they’ll finish 9-4(the reason i say 9-4 is because of our schedule next year , and auburn and Tennessee have problems also). georgia has been in the top 5 in recruiting 4 of the last 5 seasons, so whats going on. lets just hope King and Samuel live up to their 5 star ratings.

Loosing both will hurt badly. We simply dont have the athletes we had a few years ago. We have a young experienced and enormously talented OL. This will be the key. Washuan Ealy will be the only back we will have because King is a project and Samuel cant see the field. It will all rest on Joe Cox and Im not sure he has the arm. Defense will be ok but Martinez will see to it that we only play at %70 and CMR will see to it that the team plays down to the level of there weakest opponents and gets out coached buy SC, Fla and others. Go Dawgs

In my opinion Cox outplayed Stafford whenever he was given the chance. I think Stafford’s potential and politics kept him on the field. He never took over a game or dominated. He was barely consistent. I don’t see him or Moreno having great careers. Stafford will be a diasppointment, Moreno probably a career 3rd down back.

Top Dawg,

When Peyton left UT, the Vols were loaded at every other position, esp. on D who carried that team until T Martin got some experience. UGA is not loaded and that is exactly why Stafford and Marino left. To imply that UGA will be anywhere near the NC next year is rediculous…esp with Tebow coming back. Gators will have an easy time winning the SEC East next year as every other team will be down.

Joe Cox has earned his place. He’s been reliable, supportive and waited his turn when he could have transferred and played somewhere else. I think he’ll do great. He’s a technician and a passionate leader. I’m looking forward to see him get his opportunity. Joe Cox is a quality young man and I believe he’ll have David Green kind of sucess. I’m behing you Joe … way to go. Stafford was a great athlete and I enjoyed every moment he played, but his athletic ability did not always produce the results a less talented winner can produce. Let’s go with Joe … and see the Bulldogs rise again. Things are looking great after 2008 (except Willie’s still around when he should be lone gone).

good riddance stafford and moreno.

stafford was supposed to bring us all the glory….NOT. He didn’t even bring us an SEC title.

i remember when he arrived on campus and it was even worse than the upcoming presidential coronation ceremony. He was going to lead us to the promised land. Where did he lead us, actually? No where near the promise land….

Jim donnan’s best qb was not the talent laden quincy carter, but an undertalented mike bobo. Vince dooley’s best qb (Buck Belue) had to battle his way for a starting spot on the depth chart.

Give me a team full of guys who don’t care about going pro and being #1, but want to play football and I will beat your butt any day of the week. (for vindication of this, see a replay of the Utah vs. Alabama game.)

Maybe the problem with the dawgs was that they thought they could ride stafford and moreno’s glory to the national championship….now that they are gone, i hope these bandwagon trash talkers who were buying their tickets to miami in august will go with them……

The Dog fans who are trying to compare Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno leaving, to Peyton Manning leaving and then UT winning the National Championship need to stop. First of all Joe Cox is not Tee Martin. Second of all UT had an amazing defense in 1998(remember 22-3) and all you Dog fans have been wanting to fire your defensive coordinator since the UF game. Finally you do not have a running back coming back like Jamal Lewis or Travis Henry. I think unless Tebow goes pro UF will easily win the division, and UT, UGA, and maybe USC will all fight for 2nd.

By Skydawg

January 7, 2009 6:18 PM | Link to this

UGA will be fine at QB with Joe Cox. As several stated before, he broke almost all of Chris Leaks records at Independence HS. But what many forget is that he also won the Elite 11 competition as did Stafford and Murray. He is highly intelligent and will have the full reins of the offense. He is a deadly accurate passer. Joe Cox reminds me more of David Greene than anyone. Not the strongest arm and not a lot of flash but very intelligent and accurate with his passes.

The TB position scares me more but as Mark Richt has done in the past is he will utilize a type of running game that best suits the talents of the backs. I know UGA has backs with tons of talent but what concerns me more than anything is there pass blocking abilities. We’ve been spoiled with Knowshon and Thomas Brown who were both great at chipping and picking up blitzes. Time will only tell, but the cupboard is FAR from bare. Its only getting stronger with the incoming class as well.

Cox will be fine. Good talent. Smart. A leader. Knows the playbook inside and out. No problem.

I assure you we will also see some Logan Gray in a totally different package that will cause a lot of problems for defenses if for no other reason it will distract them during preparations for the week leading up to our game.

The games are normally won in the trenches and we will be much better than 2008 in talent, depth and experience on both lines.

We may not win a MNC but 2009 is not a bust in the making. 10 wins in realistic and the possibility is there for something better in 2009 and for the years to come.

Thanks for the memories Matt and Knowshon. Good luck in the NFL.

Joe Cox will easily help us get over Matthew. You guys are acting like Matthew one us multiple SEC titles. He is taking his strong arm, bad decision making, and questionable leadership to the next level. We will finally have a guy under center with some moxy and fire, things that Matt sorely lacked. Joe can do no worse than the guy he is replacing. Go Joe!!!!!! It is definitely your time. You fans would be silly for wanting Logan Gray taking snaps come September. Let him continue covering kicks. We have Branden Smith to return punts now!!!!!

Wait..RockyTop2… did you really put UT in the mix for 2nd in the SEC East?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Lay off the ‘shine! And you’re right; Cox is no “Tee Martin.”

He’ll be better.

I’ll even go one step further; if Georgia survives the first three weeks, they’ll go undefeated into the Florida game, and at that point, anything’s possible. It’s all in the momentum. Going to OK State, vs. South Carolina, and at Arkansas is daunting, but remember Arkansas “barely” beat an LSU team at home that had no QB to speak of.

Cox is a fine QB; he knows the playbook, the offense, the guys he’ll be working with, and he’s no slouch. Were it not for Stafford, he’d have easliy been one of the top QBs in the nation himself. He’ll study his @ss off this offseason, and take advantage of his year as the starter to make his case for the NFL.

And let’s not forget that many good QBs stood behind waiting for their one year to shine at a little QB factory called Southern Cal. How did Leinhart do after watching Carson Palmer all those years? And Booty? And Sanchez? How’d that program manage? Pretty well.

You don’t see QB’s bolting early very often (and they’re almost never succesful), but good luck to you as well. Out of all of this, I’m really glad that Joe Cox is going to have a significant senior year. I have always been a fan of Joe and I really think we will have a chance to do great things with him at the helm. It would of been sad to see him ride the bench all his UGA career. I honestly think he will be more like David Greene in that he will distribute the ball around and let the players make the plays. Only I think he will be better. I personally believe the team will be in good shape next year. I think Cox will be every bit the QB Stafford was. If the defense steps it up to the point they should be at, improve on special teams & the kicking game you never know. D will be better…WM had some issues with certain players and talent…..give it up guys the sky is not falling and to have 2 guys get drafted in teh top 15 is great for UGA. and to those who don’t think MS will be a good pro..you don’t know football. Ok a lot of these people on here make me sick! I believe Joe Cox will be a great QB him and Stafford are great friends and Cox has watched Stafford for 3 years so i am pretty sure Cox learned something from him and i still say watch out for Aaron Murray i beleive that we could see Murray and Cox share time as starting QB and as far as RB goes we have plenty of good young running backs, Caleb King had an amazing high school career and people forget that. The fact is King was who everyone was high on before Knowshon emerged so i think now with Knowshon out of the way Caleb King will finally feel like its his time and he will have an incredible next season, and Richard Samuel and Washaun Ealey will also be big time play makers so i really beleive that the 2009 is going to be a great season for us

A few comments: 1. We will miss Knowshon’s energy. When he ran over a defender, the team was fired up. If Samuel & King can play with that same fire and run over people, backs will be fine. If not,… 2. While I hope Joe Cox does a great job, remember that in the Colorado game on the drive before the TD, Cox throws the ball right to the DE. Spring game, fumbled a snap. 2006, final scrimmage with Joe T, BB & MS, 2 interceptions. Hope that was all lack of reps 3. Redshirt AM & ZM. Logan Gray played outstanding in the spring game. If the OL is healthy next year, IMO, Logan could do as well as Cox.

Think of when Manning left Tennessee and T Martin came in and lead them to the BCS champ. I am actually more nervous about our running backs then QB. I am not convinced Caleb is the next best thing. He seems timid at times to hit the hole and dances and tip toes a lot. Obviously now we want be ranked pre-season 1, probably not top 10, so I think we will be better focused next year and not have such a bulls-eye on us.

what’s the deal with you so-called dawg fans talking crap about stafford and knowshon for leaving. get a life, these guys are living a dream and you’re a hypocrite if you say you wouldn’t do the same thing. joe cox will give the dawgs a chance to win each game as long as the other side of the ball can keep them from scoring 30 a game. all i know is that i’ll be hunkered down 11 rows up on the 15 like usual. GO DAWGS!!!

Ron Roberts, You make all these comments about your offense being fine, which maybe it will be, but I doubt it will be as good as this years, and you still did not answer anything about your DEFENSE. Yes UT’s offense was horrendous, but our defense was in the top 5. We have most of our defense returning which will keep us in all of our games except for Florida and maybe Bama. We get Auburn, UGA, and USC all in Knoxville so I legitimately see a chance at 6-2, but I know 5-3 is likely. As for the Dawgs you can think what you want, but I definitely see a loss to UF, and toss up games against LSU and UT, and you have the road trip to OSU. Overall I see both UT and UGA at 8-4 or 9-3, but things could change in the next 8 months. And who are you to say Joe Cox will be better than Tee Martin. If he is good for him, but I do not think you can say a QB who has won one game in his career,(against a not very good Colorado team) will be better than an SEC QB who led his team to a National Championship.

There are many times that I’ve wondered why Stafford wasn’t pulled in favor of Cox. Yeah, I know Stafford had the stronger arm, but everytime I’ve seen Cox play he brought something to the hudle that wasn’t there with Stafford, and I can’t put my finger on it. Believe me when I say that GEORGIA will have a very good season in ‘09. GO DAWGS!!!

Best wishes to Stafford and Moreno - thanks for the memories.

If the Bulldogs fix what really ails this program, then the departure of these two won’t make much of a difference. If, however, Richt fails to make the necessary adjustments it won’t matter if they had stayed.

Anyone on here who tries to put Joe C in the same league as Stafford needs to see a doctor. I want UGA to do well next season too, but please stop making stupid comments that UGA will be better off with Cox. While I admire Joe for being a team guy the past 2 seasons he will never be Stafford. UGA will have to roll him out a bunch because he does not have the height or arm strength to be an SEC QB. His size is going to be an issue against the top teams next year. In games he’s played it looks like he has trouble seeing over the linemen. And to the guy who said Joe C will show the NFL he has the talent please say no to drugs the next time.

There’s only one way to look at this. Stafford and Moreno abandoned Georgia. They jumped off a sinking ship. Just like a rat would.

They both looked at the 2009 season, and saw another failure ahead of them. If not, then why didn’t they stay and give Georgia the season it deserves? No, they are ship-jumpers.

Will they be good NFL’ers? Stafford is a 50-50. Good size, good arm.

Moreno is too small. The best he can be is a Warrick Dunn.

You Dogs will have to excuse us Yellow Jackets for being so giddy, at the start of the season we had a new coach and new system and ya’ll were No. 1. At our spring practice game we were fumbling all over the field. It didn’t seem possible that we could stop number 8 in a row. Now we have the whole offense back that ran up and down the field with ease against you and as noted by many in the blogs following the game, you have the same DC back with blessing from Richt. Now you lose possibly the top pick QB and RB and that dadgum number 1. It is looking good for Tech for next year and the next.

Anyway, I think Moreno will do well in the pros and am sure you guys are dissapointed because he would easily end up second behind Hershel in total yards. Stafford I’m not as sure of but will go high and make millions. I’m surprised at the meanness toward them. Good luck until next Nov.

I think this is good for UGA, and being a GT fan, I hate that. No, they may not win as many games next year as they may have if Stafford and Moreno stayed. But their decisions to leave for the NFL should help UGA with recruiting. When you have you top 2 skill players being drafted in the first round (with Stafford in the top 3 being very likely), it makes recruits want to come play for you. QBs and RBs will see Mark Richt as the coach that got these guys to the NFL and got them paid. For years, Miami has been an NFL factory, and even when they aren’t that good, top-notch high schoolers still want to go play there, because they know that the NFL looks at Miami players before the draft, and the U does a good job of churning them out. So while this may (or may not) have a negative effect on the 2009 season, it’s a boost for UGA and Mark Richt in the long run.

What’s it feel like to have disappointment year after year? You’ve had all these top recruiting classes for the past few years but yet you say your having to rebuild and your depth is not deep. Your ultimate goal when CMR was hired was to build a program that had the talent to reload … not rebuild. So what happened? Same ole, same ole. The bottom line is “You are wanna be’s”. Meanwhile the Gator Nation is competing for and winning National Titles. Trust me, it does feel good to be a winner. We win National Titles at the end of the season, not the beginning. joe cox, logan gray, arron murry , zach mettin burger all top 10 or better comming out of high school caleb king, richard saumel, washon ealy, top 10 dontavious jackson, carlton thomas both top 15 jackson would have been higher if he had not broke his rist in the first half of the first game after 245yds and 3 tds. if some one would have taught king how to block he would have been a strong nuber 2 back. talent is there now they will have to coach them instead of thinking about how great there qb and rb are. they will have to spend more time teaching these guys and finding out who wants to win these guys had no shot while they were there but they are hungry and the oppertunity awaits. joe cox is no jo t he is not a walk on te that became a walkon qb i will give all the credit in the world to joe t for what he did accomplash but there are schools that would kill to have joe cox lead them. and i would rather see the dogs have a losing season and a winning attitude than some of the heartless attempts that we saw this year. i wish mathew and knowshon the best and cheered for them while they were there but the best thing about college football is there is going to be a new breed of dawgs leading them into battle this year. go dawgs sickem. and if you dont think a qb is suppost to be a leader watch tim t and his gators i despise florida but like tim t because he is a great player, leader, and human being. that guy would have one a hisman at vandy and had them in the discusion for a national championship. and i think that some of those qualities are what georgia needs from qb

Caleb King I agree looked timid at times. I wonder if he still had lingering concerns about his leg he broke? Samuels while not taking care of the ball at times looked very hungry and aggressive and quick.

I wish Knowshon the best he’ll get his money but it’s hard for me to see him really succeding. He is sort of in-between. He has some nice cuts but he isn’t really fast, he isn’t big enough to be a up the gut type pounder. He is sort of like a Reggie Bush only a half second slower in the 40. His best asset is his determination.

A lot of fans are selfish whiners. I wish 7 and 24 had both stayed another year but I don’t fault anyone for doing what he feels is best for himself. It’s their lives, not ours. They don’t owe us anything- we owe them for the great plays and wins both of them created. And there were quite a few of them. The TD connection against Michigan State was a beautiful statement of farewell. Best wishes to two of the best we’ll ever see. It’s great to be a Georgia Bullldog!

Now, here’s to the man of the hour, Joe Cox. He’s stuck to his commitment and now it’s his turn. And he’s going to have a lot of good men to lead next year.

Techies, good luck in your conference next year

Rocky Top, good luck doing whatever you guys are doing this bowl season, and whatever else you need to bring your program back up again,

Dogs, we have a lot to look forward to seeing. We must have a great program, with great coaches, to have these guys be ready to go to the NFL at such young ages.

To everyone, in the final analysis it will not matter what anyone says here, it will matter only what happens on the field next Sept through bowl season. Who knows who will be tops or toppled. All I know is that UGA will have as good a team as they have had in years, and that we will need it with that schedule.

What CMR and Bob need is for Michael Moore to continue to develop to kelp on the other side of AJ. Then hope White continues to develop into a starter at TE. Those two parts are critical to Cox being a successful starting QB at UGA. The RB’s will be fine with a rotation of Samuel and King. Whichever back is having the most success will get the bulk of the carries that day. Looks good for 2009.

Hopefully we will stop calling the Fla State deep ball so much. Just wish 24 could run with next years healty line. But I think Samuel will step up big and be a tough runner. Joe Cox is actually more mobile and puts better touch on the ball than Stafford. He’s been in the system now for 4 years so he knows what he’s doing. The kid is a winner. He won all of his games in HS and won the Colorado game when Stafford couldn’t get his head out of his butt. I’m not worried about the QB situation at all. And I truly hope that Murray is not the second coming of Stafford! Stafford has all of the talent in the world but some things still just don’t click with him! I’d rather have a second coming of David Greene or DJ Shockley!

We’ll miss Moreno’s energy and excitement but I think Samuel could be a bruising TB running behind a solid, experienced OL. The kids legs never stop moving and he bounces off of guys left and right. Remember, the kid was only 17 this year!!!! We have tons of depth at the TB position. I’m sure someone will emerge as “the man” at that spot. And maybe this new star TB won’t take himself out of drives once they enter the red zone!

Again, I wish Moreno and Stafford nothing but the best and appreciate all of their hard work here at UGA. But they did not make our program and will not break our program. It’s a bigger deal to keep Garner and Searels around than Moreno and Stafford!

Hey KJ, I’m at GT fan, and I would laugh at anyone who thinks we have a chance at a preseason #1 ranking, as well. I’m not trolling; it’s a fact that anyone who would vote UGA #1 after a 3-loss season and after losing their starting QB and RB must be smoking some good stuff. You know, with Colt McCoy coming back and Tebow and Bradford still undecided, I would think one of those teams would likely be ranked #1 in the preseason. Not that it matters much, however. I believe only 1 team has started the season #1 and carried that ranking all the way until the end.

Cox will be fine - maybe more of a team gut than MS. As pointed out earlier, he was a hero against Colorado. Matt will suffer Archie Manning syndrome (getting killed on a bad team). Hopefully, T-blow will leave.

Knowshon probably should have stayed. The long season will take a toll on him. He won’t be jumping up too many times after some of those NFL hits and his habit of taking himself out of games won’t be tolerated.

Elmo, many people though Matt Ryan would get killed this year, thanks to a horrible offensive line that gave up 47 sacks last year. But the Falcons showed how quickly a team can turn around if they make the right moves. If Detroit or KC can get a new GM in place who knows how to spot talent, and if Detroit gets a good coach and KC shows Herm Edwards the door an upgrades, who knows what could happen? Hell, look at what Miami was able to do this year with a couple moves.

I like Detroit’s RB, and Stafford would have Calvin to throw to, which would make any QB better. Stafford obviously has all the physical tools to be good at the next level. I do worry a bit, however, about his decision-making. Maybe he’ll end up with a really good QB coach or OC or an offensive-minded HC who can mold him.

can Cox deliver the football on go routes to AJ Green?

i have serious concern in that department. Richt’s offenses are always more effective when they can both run the ball and stretch the field deep. not short route throws but with the deep ball.

stafford could throw the deep ball but greene was far more accurate and completed a higher percentage of those throws.

can cox even throw it as far as greene? i ses him stonger than Joe III but not as strong as Greene.

Cox was average; just like he always is, and Gray looked confident, athletic, and much more capable.

Why do we want to put ourselves in the same situation next year by having to find a new starter with almost zero experience.

Wasn’t Cox at Georgia before Stafford? Why was Cox never able to push Stafford out of his job?

The former Bulldog played in all their games but didn’t start any of them. He played behind a junior named Garrett DeWitt. Barnes was 49-of-87 passing for 533 yards with 3 TDs and 3 INTs. He was a senior so that’s it. My understanding is he will or already has graduated with a degree from UGA.

How about Cox as the starter and on ocassion Logan Gray runnin’ the Wild Dawg formation. Folks understand that we will not be ranked #1 next year BUT could be a better team. I’m excited about 09!

What Dawg fan would ever want to be preseason #1 again? That was like winning some screwed up contest from hell…

I too would like to see a spread package implemented for Gray. I’m not a big fan of the spread, but you can’t argue with it’s effectiveness especially in short yardage & redzone situations.

7 & #24 I thank you for the chance to see you both in red and black. You both served UGA very well. Best of luck in the NFL. I hope the 2 extra schollys this gives us are put to good use. This signing class was going to be good anyway but it’s now going to be even better. Cox or Gray or one of the frosh will be fine. The glass folks, is a lot more than half full. Ga may not win the SEC next year, but I’ll bet they will darn well compete for it. This team is much more than a QB and RB. I want everybody to write us off…. It makes the victories that much sweeter

If you’ll recall, Cox is the reason we beat Colorado in 2006. He’ll be solid behind a ridiculously good O-Line. As well as some good RB’s and great receivers.

They should Move Samuel to LB

Cox should be fine but DAWG fans need to be realize that this fall if we are going to win alot of games and compete they are going to be low scoring games won by the defense.

I like Joe Cox and think he will do fine but the I ithnk the offense will dip down 10-13 points a game. He did come from behind and beat Colorado but they STUNK that year. I do remember him getting yanked in his only SEC start against OLE Miss 3 years ago.

-You know it;s actually kinda exciting to see who and how these guys step up. I ithnk with KM gone it gives Bobo a chance to put in a package for C. Thomas and we get to see Jackson hit the field in the spring. To me as I stated above I see Samuel as a fast hard hitting LB to go along with Curran. Of course he needs to beef up some but with his speed he can cover and from watching him run with the ball doesn’t shy from contact.

I for one am looking forward to a team with alot of young talent play a tough schedule and we’ll see how it goes!

-Oh yeah good to see we picked up the DE from Indiana. We need those.

OK. First, I appreciate all the UGA fans who post here. Opinions are like, well, we all know everyone has one. Sometimes one stinks pretty bad, but mostly they’re just there, and get expressed. Let’s keep all ours clean.

Second, why do misguided fans of other teams insist on posting negative thoughts on UGA blogs? Would all of you UGA fans stay off competitor blogs? That may not make a difference to the idiots who come on here to post their BS, but let’s quit doing it to them. The worst thing in the world is useless boasting, especially when one isn’t going to take the field in headgear.

Third, I have scanned all the posts above, and others, and have seen nothing suggesting a “Wild Dawg” formation with Logan Grey running. With a good line next year, it seems to me that Bobo would be remiss in not installing this type of formation. He could also use A.J. for the direct snap, although, that may risk injury unnecessarily for our best WR.

And finally, Joe Cox will be fine. He has the leadership skills of D. Greene and M. Bobo. He can throw the ball well and knows the play book. I will guarantee you that Cox will have better rapport with Bobo than Stafford did. After a point, no one could reach Stafford, “where he lived,” for lack of a better term (not saying he was a stubborn, self-invested AH). Joe will be motivated, not just by his nature, but by his opportunity to deliver unexpected results.

I predicted a disappointing season for UGA, considering expectations, and a complete turnaround for Tech in 2008. It happened. Next year, UGA will over-achieve and Tech will be disappointed in their results (though they will still exceed the Chan G. years).

I look forward to seeing this Bobo/Cox collaboration. I think they are more “of the same mind,” in their game philosophy. I even suspect MR prefers Joe, on an emotional level, as a leader.

No one is really projecting the Rams to take a QB at #2, but they’re in talks with Josh McDaniel over their HC position. I know they have Bulger, but a young offensive-minded coach like McDaniel may want his own young QB around which to build a team. And if Detroit doesn’t select Stafford, playing for Josh McDaniel with the Rams might not be such a bad deal. Just look at what the guy was able to do with Matt Cassel this year.

This year reminded me of the Zier, Hearst, and Hastings years. Lots of yards, penalties, a questionable OL, and poor in the red zone. Cox and Bobo will go for more high percentage passes and not rely on his arm much more like Green. If the OL stays solid which has never happened under MR and UGA gets a healthy DE and a better DB, the season will go well.

I don’t think Cox is reminiscent of Joe T at all. Joe T was a career 3rd stringer that we all knew had limited talent from day one. Nobody expected him to come in and do what Shockley and Greene had done. In his extremely brief tenure as a starter he was not asked to do very much. The hope was that a strong running game and defense would take the load off him in ‘06. That didn’t happen. He was a great guy and I was rooting like hell for him, but this is reality.

Cox, on the otherhand, is an elite talent that will be able to do everything in the playbook. Watch what all those NFL draft shows say about Stafford and you’ll know why Cox was riding the pine for the past 3 years. But make no mistake about it, Joe Cox is the real deal. I am very excited about 2009.

HS Scouting report (courtesy of Scout)

Joe Cox - Very polished coming out of an offense that runs a very sophisitcated offense. Arm deceptively strong, but his accuracy and spin are terrific. Moves well inside the pocket and combination of his mobility and offensive style keeps the pass rush off of him. From GeorgiaDogs.com - 2004 Parade Magazine All-America Team SuperPrep All-MidAtlantic Team…2004 Associated Press Prep Football Player of the Year for NC…NC Gatorade Player of the Year in 2004…Featured in Feb. 21, 2005, Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” for being the Old Spice Red Zone National High School Player of the Year…AP First-Team All-State and two-time Charlotte Observer Offensive Player of the Year…Played in Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas…31-0 record as starting QB and two-time team captain

Logan Gray - He has decent size, good speed and is a dangerous runner and passer. Gray has good arm strength and is very accurate, especially on the short and intermediate routes. Gray makes good decisions with the ball and shows good fundamentals as well. When things do break down he has the athletic ability to make a play. He can buy some time with his vision and quickness and locate a receiver down field or tuck it and run. From GeorgiaDogs.com - SuperPrep All-America and All-Midlands Team…Prep Star All-American… rated as the No. 2 prospect in Missouri and the No. 10 QB in the nation by Rivals.com…ESPN Top 150 and No. 7 QB in the nation…named to Tom Lemming’s Top 100 Prospects…Class 6 First-Team All-State…named an Elite 11 QB.

As you saw this year with Alabama, a solid offensive line and a good defense can make even an average college quarterback like JPW look very good. Joe Cox is not someone that can carry an offense. The defense will have to play substantially better and the oline will need to stay healthy and someone must emerge at running back to avoid 7-5.

I tend to think you will see a good bit of Logan Gray next year as well. We’ll see what Bobo can do without a future ALL PRO in Matt Stafford.

I think UGA should redshirt Murray and play Cox and Logan Gray. I would love to see some plays with the both of them on the field. UGA could do the same with them like Florida did with Tebow and Leek (they won a NC doing this). Right this down, Cox will be a better QB that Stafford and the college level. Doesn’t have the arm strength but he is extremely accurate- will throw 65-70% completion rate.

Boys, it doesn’t matter if we got John Elway running the offense if we don’t have a defense. Cox will be good because he don’t have the arm to make bad decisions. We will have 3 running backs that will do us good. Bottom-line is defense and we are seriously struggling in that area. Hope we got some redshirts coming in!!

We will have a much better oline next year!We all know Cox knows all our plays and can step right in. Our defense matured finally in the bowl game and will do nothing but get better, In my opinion what hurt us the most this year was the play of our tight ends! Good luck to both Stafford and Moreno! would love to see the NY jets get Stafford and Moreno even though I am a die hard Giants fan!!!

To answer your question, I am not comaparing a three year SEC starter in JPW to Cox, my point was to illustrate, the surrounding cast, particularly the offensive line can make a HUGE difference in the play of the quarterback particularly when he is not the claiber of Matt Stafford. I would imagine with Cox playing the last two years, UGA would most likely have lost 4-6 games more.

By RealityYech

January 8, 2009 2:23 PM | Link to this

I might be on a boat all to myself here, but I for one don’t see losing Stafford/Moreno as a huge travesty. Would I have rather them both stayed? Sure, for the POTENTIAL as to what could happen. But you know what, it never did. It was by all means not their sole responsibility as to why it didn’t, a lot of factors were at play. But fact is, UGA lost the program’s greatest QB several years ago in David Greene.

Yes, I know, he’s not ever going to start, or possibly even play, in the NFL, but that by no means diminishes what he achieved and did at UGA. I think, instead of worrying about who the next Stafford will be, we need to worry about who the next Greene will be.

The Moreno loss is far more impactful and reason to worry. But just like how Moreno came from nowhere on the practice squad, we could very well see that again next season.

So no need to panic, just wish everyone would stop pretending we’re losing the greatest college QB of all-time. Stafford did for us what Calvin Johnson did for Tech, which isn’t much.

By BBR

January 8, 2009 2:25 PM | Link to this

I agree with Dawg Tired. Stafford wasn’t much of a leader. Hopefully Cox will be, just the way Shockley was. Georgia didn’t really have any leadership this year and I believe that was a huge problem.

For the future…Cox is the only QB to throw for a TD against Florida and actually moved the ball well against the FL D that was still in there.

What the hell are you talking about? Stafford threw for at least 2 or 3 touchdowns against Florida dumbass. Remember the win against Florida?

As for Cox, I wish him well. He’s gonna need he. Has nowhere near Stafford’s talent, arm, size, and strength. Better pray for one hell of an offensive line. Especially considering we haven’t even had a decent offensive line in 3+ years.

I think it is absolutely hysterical that the nerds are STILL talking about their measley three point win over an average Georgia team! Let me guess, you still have your flags on your car too, right? Get a life. Then again, when you play in such a crappy conference that you only have one rival….

GO DAWGS!!! 7 years in a row

By the way, the Tech fans sure do spend a lot of time in the UGA blogs? Don’t you have your own geek blog? Maybe you should go to those and try to figure out how in the world such a GREAT team that you profess to be got their a**es handed to them by LSU!

Comparing Stafford’s contribution to Johnson’s at TECH is hillarious. First, a qb handles the ball every play. A wide reciever might at most get 10 - 15 touches. Given the line the last three years, Stafford did an amazing job, this year alone without Matt we most likely lose to Kentucky, Auburn and South Carolina. Imagine the whining from the “fans” if 9-3 was 6-6. Calvin never beat the dogs. Comparing him to Stafford is ridiculous.

We gonna be all good. Hopefully these young DB’s will step up and we’ll lock em down.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!

Okay, so I’m reading these posts and the comments are all over the charts. What I find really amusing are the ones that talk about Cox being too small to see over the line. Let’s see, if I remember this right, Stafford was listed at 6-3 and Cox at 6-1. Others go on to say that Murray would be better than Cox, yet he also stands at 6-1. Will Murray somehow be able to see over the line even though he is the same height as Cox? Finally, Shockley was listed at 6-1 and I don’t remember him having any trouble seeing over the line.

I really think we’re grasping at straws here.

Anyone find it interesting that even in blowouts(the few we had) Joe Cox never saw the field, yet in the Colorado game he comes off the bench and leads us down the field for the winning score, and against Florida this year when Staff struggled all game Joe comes in and leads the team right down the field for our only TD against FL. I’ve often wondered if he didn’t see the field much the last two seasons for fear of creating a public QB controversy. Staff definitely is the better athlete of the two with a stronger arm, but as many have stated he did at times seem to have a “win it all on one throw mentality”. Some of the mistakes he made this year seemed to be ones that he should have learned from in the previous 2 seasons. Many times when he went for it all on a big throw, the WR was either covered like a wet blanket by the opposition’s shut down corner or was double covered, meanwhile there would be a wide open reciever on a shorter route that was past the first down marker but wouldn’t have been as glamourous a throw but would have moved the chains. Don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to bash Stafford in any way and he is a tremdous talent, but he seemed to be a bit stubborn with some of his decision making, which is something I don’t think we’ll have as much of a problem with Joe Cox. I think something else to consider is Staff and Moreno put up the numbers they did with a patchwork line this year, and that line will be much better and deeper because so many lineman had to play different positions. 2009 should see the starters returning to their natural positions and leave us with 2nd and 3rd stringers who have exp at multiple line positions so if we do happen to have injuries we will much better equiped to deal with it. As for Knowshon’s replacement, Caleb King, it’s MUCH too early to judge him. He only had 40-50 carries over the course of the season to spell Knowshon. I personally will wait to pass judgement on his ability until after I see what he can do with 15-20 carries + in a game. Many great backs need a few carries to get into a groove and get a feel for what the defense is going to give him. Think about how many times Knowshon didn’t do much on his first 5-6 carries in a game and then went on to have a 100+ yd game. Caleb definitely has talent, I just don’t think you can judge how good or bad a RB is based on getting a carry here and there in spot duty. Don’t forget we also have Carlton Thomas who should be a nice change of pace back like Tyson Browning was, Dontavious Jackson who was tearing it up in spring before getting injured, and WaShaun Ealy. (didn’t forget about Richard Samuel, but hearing rumors he may be moved to LB). As for the critics of WaShaun Ealy and whether or not he has SEC speed, 1. He did something right to rush for the yardage he did and found the enzone 55 times, and 2. Remember the knock on Anquan Boldin and his 40 time? track speed and football speed are different, and just because someone has a tremendous 40 time doesn’t mean it will translate to the field otherwise coaches would be beating down the door of every track star in america to play. Regardless of his 40 time he’s obviously a very good football player. Anyway, there’s always concern in who’s going to replace top talent, but I definitely agree with most that we will reload next year and the future is indeed bright. GO DAWGS

Its not that similar to the situation in 2006 with Joe T, Cox, Staff, and Blake Barnes. Joe Cox is exponentially more talented than Joe T. was. He was an elite 11 Qb coming out of HS. Logan Gray is more highyl touted than Blake Barnes, by that point in 06, we knew Blake was a bust.

By Oledawg

January 8, 2009 5:12 PM | Link to this

Cox is no DJ. One big difference. If DJ had a busted play, he could fairly well pick up his game by running fast as hell and with great athleticism. He was a running back qb who was a great leader with heart. Cox does indeed know the playbook better because he has been utilized for signal calling from the sidelines as well as scout team experience. DJ’s work with Camp Sunshine kids impressed me due to his full emotional involvement (i.e.,the little girl who gave him her hospital bracelet). He stood in wait as a loyal Dawg moreso than any other before or since. He was advised to leave by his Father (who could blame him), but his was the loyalty we as fans depend upon. He covered himself with The Red and Black through personal sacrifice of part of his life. He and Cox as individuals shouldn’t be compared. It is unfair to them both.

Cox’s loyalty, lest you forget, resulted early on to help bring MoMass to us as well. He was his favorite target on their championship team. This would have been his last year to throw to him since MoMass is soon to be an alumnus. Why am I writing these testimonials? Because deep loyalty commands respect from the team and the fans. It leads to those miracle plays and sound playing from individuals he is leading.

Gray has shown his loyalty by requesting to contribute to the team in any way possible including getting nailed on kickoff returns where his ability to catch instead of throwing the ball gave us confidence that nothing stupid would happen on kickoffs. He was there to run as well. He requested and got scout team play to help sharpen our game. His loyalty and skill is not to be questioned. So where does this leave us with incoming QBs?

Mettenberger is the son of a UGA Athletics Dept. employee. Wonder how many nights he laid awake thinking if he would be good enough to be asked to put on the Bulldog mantra. I’ll bet it was a lot of nights. He was top QB at an Alabama camp last year. I’ll bet he will be better than his potential assessment for a scholarship by competing with Murray. He is going to be a surprise keeper beyond what is expected.

Then we have Murray. He is probably recruiting as much as the coaches. His encampment in Ca. with the top QBs in America resulted in him established as the top QB in the country. If a guy like that asked you to come to UGA as a receiver, you would respond. His loyalty is without question before he starts. And he has the gun and the leg to go with it.

Spring practice will be exciting just from this one position of candidates. Their Bulldog loyalty will be unquestioned and I wish them all well, but I do have a favorite as I’m sure many of you have as well. I will watch him closely and hope he fulfills his athletic promise. This entire bunch will work their way into games.

Ron Roberts-Your comparison to USC QBs is a good reminder for the fans to be patient and rely on the coaches to go with the best man as our starter. D.Ellis- Right on! Lets watch’em compete for the best job in college ball. We will expect nothing less. Uga-You have to hold up the #7 all by yourself, boy. Good dog!

Bloggers; So Stafford, and Moreno, have taken there talent on to the next level, and the Bulldawg nation is questioning about Joe Cox. Well people let a real football guy tell you that the wheels will keep rolling. Coach Richt, and Coach Bobo will make the necessary adjustments based on what “Cool Joe can do”, we’ve got a stable of running backs, very good receivers, and a O-line that will have matured alot. Dawg nation, you are not Ball State, that had one good season, you are UGA, and you are a perennial power in the best conference in college football. Let’s not forget, that three nat’l champs in the last five years came from this conference, and a fourth one [AUBURN] was robbed of one in ‘04’. We are the BULLDOGS, we get the cream of the crop kids from high school and turn them into better players.Joe Cox will lead with precision pinpoint short and intermediate passes,Caleb will run like a man that wants it, because he knows that Dontavious Jackson,Washun Ealey,R.Samuels, and Xavier Avery are hungry. The Defense will step up big time, because Lil Willie knows he has got to take it up a notch, and he’ll have healthy body’s. Yes Bulldog nation this is your year, and you better get ready, you will be better than even you know. TECHIES please prepare yourself for a bad day because this year you wont be dealing with a Bulldog, you’ll be dealing with a very mad Bulldog. Now with that said strap up the chin straps, look your opppnent in the eyes, tell him you gonna hit em in the mouth and do it. I am excited at the talent we have at QB and at RB. I look forward to the battles at fall practice for the coveted first and second spots. Ealy impresses me with his raw talent. CK could take over and pull away with the number one spot if he gets the touches. My family watched him while he was at Parkview and they said he is the real deal. Just get him the ball more than 5 or 6 carries per game.

O line and D line should be healed up. DB’s got a year under their belt. Heck I am fired up to see the “new model” Georgia Bulldawgs.

I have been following UGA football since I was a kid in the sixties. Many great players have come and gone. I got the thrill and pleasure to drive one of the team buses on game days from 81-85. I have seen many greats come and go. This is what I love about college ball, the changing of the guard and the dedication of the players and the fans. College football is the greatest sport in the land.

GO DAWGS!!!

CRS,

Yeah, my bad. Will you please forgive me? I can’t for the life of me even begin to imagine why I compared Stafford to Johnson. I mean, it can’t be because both were in the top 3 coming out of high school at their respective positions. It also can’t be because both were ballyhooed as having NFL ready skills as true freshman. Definitely not the fact all the “experts” predicted both would be far better in the pros than at the college level. And it surely can’t be the fact that neither won a national, nor conference, title while in college. And it definitely can’t be the fact both bolted after their 3rd year. And it most definitely can’t be the fact that both are probable top 5 draft picks. So other than that, yeah douchebag, you’re right. Lol!!!!!

I’m always amazed at the amount of stupidity that post on this site. Good grief man.

I still think my dawgs should be playing tonight instead of the Gators. Even though they beat us for two decades, I beleive they just got lucky. I can’t wait to play them again next year.

My Jackets should really be playing tonight. We’ve got the best coach in the world. The best QB, RB, you name it. I know we’re going to win the next 10 straight National Championships, and beat UGA the next 91 years straight, but it just really chaps my behind that we’re not showing our stuff tonight. Ahh shucks, I guess I can wait one more year for greatness!! Ramble on Jackets!!! You da man!!!!

One thing to remember 1997 - Manning = nothing, 1998 - Martin = National Title. Go Joe!!!

Isn’t RICHARD SAMUEL really young. I think he is 18 and already has a year of SEC experience. He is probably still growing and hopefully is getting stronger and faster. He has the potential to be a great back.

I AM AMAZED AT HOW MANY MORONS POST ON HERE. ALL OF THEM ARE ANTI-UGA AND TRY ALL KINDS OF REASONING WHY UGA WILL BE BAD IN 2003/2004/2005/2006/2007/2008/2009 (FILL IN THE BLANK). I KEEP WAITING ONLY TO SEE RICHT WIN 10+ GAMES YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT. NOTHING WILL CHANGE IN 2009 EXCEPT UGA WILL PLAY UF FOR THE SEC EAST TITLE (AGAIN) AND WIN ANOTHER 10+ GAMES. UT AND SC WILL NOT BE IN THE PICTURE. ANY MORON CAN SEE THAT. OH AND OL MISS OR LSU WILL WIN THE WEST. TONY BARNHART NEEDS TO CHECK INTO REHAB BSED ON HIS PRE-SEASON PREDICTIONS.

Call me selfish. If Peyton Manning and Matt Leinert can stay for four years, because they still want to get better before going to the NFL. What in the Wide, Wide, World of Sports is Matt Stafford thinking about? As far Moreno, his decision is even more mind boggling!!!

“Of course, Murray, the ballyhooed quarterback from Tampa, is supposed to be the second coming of Stafford.”

The second coming of Stafford? So basically we won’t be sniffing an SECC, much less a NC for another 3 years?

I am glad to see Stafford go, if only so I don’t have to listen to you bozos in the media hype “Staff” up making excuses for his inconsistent throwing and applauding his mediocre performances.

Joe Cox will perform atleast as well as ‘the prototype NFL QB’, but as those above me have said - Moreno will be much harder to replace.

If anyone cares about history, I remember the 70’s (yes, the 70s) when UGA had the baddest bunch its ever had. The defense was king (Stanfill, Scott) and won the SEC when there was only one division. The QB was Cavan,a freshman, and he was only OK. But OK was good enough as the defense killed everybody. Defense is the key yet these blogs only discuss the offense. Put your best atheletes on defense and you have a better team. Again, can any of these hotshots (Greene, King, etc) tackle ????

Just wanted to point out nobody has mentioned A.J. Green. He may be the best WR the Dawgs have ever had.

Excuse me, Stanfill-Scott was the late 60’s. And the game is still the same. By the way, I learned a lot about high school offenses last night while watching UF-OK. Both teams ran a lot of “spread” plays. FL stuck with their QB option run, the pitch to the trailing back, etc. I’m sure P Johnson sees many ways to vary his offense and I can’t wait.

I don’t give a crap how long Cox has been at UGA, don’t get us into another Tereshinski situation.. Throw the job open for all the qb’s and let the best man win!!! Look at all those players Richt wasted because he was so gung-ho on red-shirting freshmen. He finally admitted it after his eighth year. Pete Carroll tells all his players that the best player at his position is going to start no matter what his class, and it is pretty hard to argue with his record, but then again Richt isn’t too smart so you don’t know what to expect. As an afterthought maybe I should ask the water girl, choke, choke!!!!!!

Well best of luck to Staford and Moreno.

I am excited to see our 09 team play. I think Cox will do a great job as QB. He knows the offense as well as anyone, and he has a great arm. He also has great vision. He looks at multiple recievers, and has great accuracy.

Go Dawgs….Sic em!!!!!!!

It seems they both have assets what with L.G and his legs I almost am tempted to utter that expression, you know 2 QB system. Think about c\Cox’s passing and the you bring in Gray to run out of that position. L.G can throw pretty well himself.
