UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

MSU can’t keep pace with Dogs

NOTE: Updated with news and notes from coaches press conference and Kickoff Luncheon in comments section below… .

Happy New Years eve, Dogs fans (and others). Today I’m coming to you from my little cubicle at the Kinko’s business center at the J.W. Marriott. Exciting place. I’d write from expansive desk in my room next to the window with the picturesque view of the four pools and wading areas but my college-age daughter is here with me and she seems the think morning is an optimum sleeping time. So I have a great view of three wooded walls.

Anyway, it’s time to get down to it. Georgia and Michigan State face off in the Capital One Bowl tomorrow at 1 p.m. and it seems like we’ve done very little talking about the actual matchup. So let’s talk about it.

There’s a reason ESPN’s Jesse Palmer picked this game as his biggest lock of the 34 bowl games. Now I don’t necessarily think the former Florida QB is the world’s greatest prognosticator or anything and I don’t feel as strongly as he does about the matchup. I just bring it up to make a point: Georgia is the better team and should win the football game.

The Talking Heads are going to babble a lot about Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno and Michigan State’s Javon Ringer and it is indeed an intriguing and exciting showcase of two of college football’s best tailbacks. But that’s really not what this game is going to come down to.

In my opinion it’s going to be about the Spartans defending the Bulldogs’ passing attack AND Moreno. I think you’re going to see huge games from quarterback Matthew Stafford and wideouts A.J. Green and Mohamed Massaquoi. MSU hasn’t played an offense as balance, explosive and effective as Georgia’s all season. They were ranked in the bottom third of the Big Ten and 64th in the NCAA against the pass and they’re actually worse at stopping the run (72nd). So I believe this is one of those deals where the Spartans are going to be on their heels all day defensively trying to figure out if Georgia’s going to pass or run and being a step behind by the time they do.

I know, I know, the Bulldogs’ defense ain’t so hot either. But it’s all relative. Georgia has had some awful games — especially that 409-yard rushing debacle against Georgia Tech — but it’s still 28th nationally in defense against what’s considered the third-toughest schedule in the country. And last time I checked Michigan State doesn’t run the triple option (though I bet it put some in!).

Bottom line, the Spartans will put up some points but no way they can keep pace with your Dogs. Now I’ll qualify all that with, I probably said a lot of the same things before West Virginia came to the Georgia Dome for the Sugar Bowl in 2005-06.

So you think I have it about right or am I totally off base?

I’ll get you some updates from the coaches’ press conference and kickoff luncheon later today. Play nice!

Tomorrow should be a big day for our offense and will be a nice way to send out MoMass. Does anyone remember the last time we lost to a sorry Big10 team in a bowl game? It seems like we always represent the SEC well in these matchups…

Wondering if there are any M.State fans out there and their thoughts on the game.

-It should be a great game. M.State is a good team with an outstanding RB. The way they can counter UGA is by a slow and steady running game that Kepps our offense on the sideline. Ringer ran the ball 370 times this year….thats freakin 31 times a game. If he is,knocking down 4 yard runs it cold get tough for our offense to get in rythym.

-I think this is a big game for Blair Walsh. Getting a couple of FG’s for him and having a good game, could carry over into next year for him. Hopefully MM has another great game and goes out on top at the end of his career. Sine I think this is Staff’s last game it would be great for him to get 300 and a couple of scores. He has had a very nice season this year.

Expect Georgia to lollygag and run up record number of penalties. MSU is not Georgia Southern or Central Mich. This will be another humiliating defeat for Georgia followed by more whimpering about injuries and finger pointing.

Dogbyte: The last time I remember is David Greene’s Senior year against LSU. That has been the only time where they came out and played up to their full capability.

Just like that Sugar Bowl (and too many other big games) we cannot afford to come out flat. I do think we beat MSU, but a win is not enough here. We need a statement game to end what most consider a disappointing season. Finish the drill.

I’m looking forward to seeing MoMass go out with a big game. He’s a great player and better person. Moreno, Green and Stafford should excel as well (Let’s hope the QB and TB stay for one more year).

The defense is probably hungry for a level of respect, so expect some big hits and big plays.

I am anxious about the injuries, but UGA will play with the dice given them and earn its 10th victory of the year and 10th out of 12 bowl games.

The 2nd half of the 2007 season was full of solid performances — against Florida, Auburn, Hawai’i, etc.

You have not heard or read about any UGA players taking this game lightly. And they haven’t been talking any smack. They’ve been complimentary of the MSU team while the MSU senior DE has been dissing the UGA OL.

Stafford throws for 300+, AJ & MoMass have big games and Knowshon runs for 140. If the defense has relearned how to tackle, Ringer is held in check. If not, his RAC yards are huge and he has a big game but not enough to outscore the UGA offense.

Dave in Tampa, so we’re supposed to win every game by 29 points like we did that one? That is essentially what you are telling us. This is apparently your definition of “playing to your capabilities”. Nothing less than a total blowout will satisfy crybabies like you. Your standards might be a tad high dude. Take a look around you. Georgia plays alot of really really good teams every year. Sometimes you play up to your capabilities and you’re still lucky to win the game. Sometimes you even lose. That’s college football. That’s the SEC. I will not for a second suggest that Georgia played up to its capabilities this year, but the crap you are spewing does us no good. Its not reasonable. Sorry to single you out but I have been hearing nonsense like this all year. It is absurd to suggest that in 81 wins in 8 years Mark Richt’s teams have put together only ONE game where they played to their capabilities. That is ridiculous. Please stop your whining people.

Behind good senior leaders and Coach Dantonio, the Spartans had a very good season. Nevertheless, I basically agree with Chip. State had trouble defending, even against some bad teams. They move the ball well, unless their offensive line gets overpowered. If the Dawgs defensive line can’t control the line of scrimmage, I think the game will be interesting (not unlike the Missouri-Northwestern game ouple nights ago). Go Green & White, let’s get it on!!!

I read that AJ Green is dating Angel Robinson of the UGA basketball team. He’s 6 foot 4 and she is 6 foot five.

UGA vs. Spartans: If (i) UGA cares about this game, (ii) UGA doesn’t have a we’re-the-SEC-so-we’ll-win-because-we’re-so much-faster attitude, and (iii) if Stafford and Moreno don’t hold back (to avoid injuries so they’ll do better in the draft a la Arkansas last year) then I think UGA winning by a score of 35-17 is in order.

On paper and talent/potential wise, UGA should wipe the field win MSU. However, the Dawgs have (sadly) underperformed (to their potential) all season long. If the defense steps ups & makes most of their tackles & the offense protects the football, UGA should win handily. My gut instinct tells me Ringer will rack up some yardage, but I’d like to think CWM & the D will bring the “A game” (instead of the usually D- game). It would be a nice end to the season if the Dawgs blow out the Spartans…with Stafford passing for 300+, YOshown getting 150+ rushing & the D holding MSU under 17 or so. GO DAWGS!!!

Seems we said the same thing about South Carolina and also West Virginia a few years ago. Heck , the dawgs thought Tech couldn’t keep pace and look what happened. Oh yeah even Auburn and Kentucky this past year too. When will UGA put together a complete game? Its been a long time! Its either the offense is good and the defense is pathetic or vice versa or both play pathetic. When is UGA gonna arrive and have a total dominate game?

Just got back from the Capital One head coaches press conference and Kickoff Luncheon over at the Renaissance Orlando SeaWorld Resort. At this point there’s not a lot left to say, or ask for that matter, but there were some interesting comments I thought.

The most interesting came from coach Mark Richt when a Michigan writer, right out of the box, asked him how in the world the Spartans would stay with them on Thursday:

Richt: “Come on. I don’t think that’s a very good question quite frankly, with all due respect to you. This team [Michigan State] was one game away from winning the Big Ten. Their last game of the year, if they win they’re going to the Rose Bowl. They’re a fantastic football team. Their record is the same as ours non-conference, in-conference. Coach Dantonio has put together a great team. They play together, they play disciplined, they have plenty of speed where they need it. They’re winners.”

Richt wasn’t mean about it but his delivery was about as pointed as I’ve seen from him this season. He almost glared at the dude. “Here’s how I’m looking at it,” he said. “I’m just hoping for the victory. And we’re going to play as hard as we can play and hope we have more points at the end.” …

CMR went on to say that his staff and, by association, his players, were taking this game extremely seriously and has been working very hard. He talked about moving the curfew up an hour earlier than usual so the players could get in their work early each day (rising about 6:45 a.m.), then cut them loose in the afternoon to enjoy the theme parks. “There’s no point in them staying up. They should be tired and going to sleep at night.” …

CMR was asked about the 409 yards rushing allowed to Tech and how that may not bode well getting ready to face the one of the top ballcarriers in the country in Javon Ringer. Richt said they worked more on tackling in the bowl practice that they ever have.

“We tackled more during our bowl practice sessions than we did the entire season,” he said. “We went back to a little bit of our spring practice mentality and blocked and tackled live… .

“The biggest problem we had [against Tech] was we didn’t wrap up. I’m not trying to throw [the defense] under the bus but when you watch what happened, we tried to knock people down, we tried to knock them out of bounds. Every time we were in pads we tackled to the ground for this bowl game.” …

Georgia is still a banged up team. CMR said they’ll have 28 players that will be unable to play in Thursday’s game because of injuries, 16 of whom definitely would have played.

“It’s been a real issue,” he said. “I’m not crying about it. In some ways we’re blessed that a lot of young guys are playing. But the reality is that we had one season-ending injury last year and we’ve had 22 this year… .

The latest to go down is DE Demarcus Dobbs (ankle), who is considered questionable. The problem there is not as much with the defense as all the special teams that Dobbs plays (punt, kickoff return, kickoff, extra point/FG, extra point/FG block). “A lot of coaches are scrambling now to make sure his sub is ready.” …

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio is clearly an intense guy. He talked about how this year’s bowl was part of the building process in his second year as head coach. “Our goal was to make it to a New Year’s bowl game. It was a big goal for a small group of 16 seniors and they accomplished it.” …

Dantonio pointed out it has been 44 days since their blowout loss to Penn State to end the regular season and that they’ve worked very, very hard ever since, to the point that the team was “leg tired” and they had to pull back this past Monday. They ran multiple conditioning tests and he believes they will be in “peak condition” for this game… .

As for the game, he thinks the Spartans’ offense might be more balanced than folks think. He believes they have enough speed to hang with the Dogs. “We have guys that run 10.5 100 meters; we’ve got speed. We’ll try to play a lot of players and stay fresh.”

ONE OTHER NOTE: A pretty funny scene at the Kickoff Luncheon. The two quarterbacks — Georgia’s Matt Stafford and MSU’s Brian Hoyer — were assigned to pass out the door prizes, four of which were autographed footballs. So they were told to throw them to the recipients.

Stafford’s first one hit the ceiling and nearly took out a chandelier in the fancy ballroom. He took off his jacket and managed to hit his second target. Hoyer fired two perfect strikes on his balls.

So advantage Spartans.

Chip, I think one thing we have learned from this season is that how teams stack up statistically and who “should win” according to the “experts” can be much less a factor in the outcome than just which team wants the win most. There’s a psychological factor that seems to defy fan analysis. When the DAWGS come out on the field with fire in their eyes, playing with intensity and desire for a win the whole game, then we will have the real deal. Until then, we just have to watch and see what will happen. Regardless, I am a true DAWG fan and will be as long as I live.

The day was November 4, 1893. A little history for you. The first match between Georgia and Georgia Tech.

I remember it like it was yesterday. We were gathered at Herty Field with our finest clothes, hats and smokeable tobacco. The ladies wore their shiniest of scarves and fluttered about like butterflies. Excitement was in the Athens air awaiting their arrival and the battle.

The Georgia School of Technology (that’s what they called Georgia Tech at the time) Blacksmiths led by coaches Stan “Devil” Borleske and “Cheap” Casey Finnegan arrived by train and entered our fair city with arrogance and disregard for our lady residences. A few of Athens prettiest ladies drew faint at the sight of these bothersome and boorish city foot-ballers. They arrived to play our dear honest and trustworthy Georgia boys coached by Ernest Brown.

At one time early in the last half of the game, a Tech player announced to the crowd that he was the man of the match and that he would take the local woman of his choosing. A stone was hurled at this player, striking him a cruel blow in the head. He immediately ceased such announcements. At another time, after the coaches of the Tech team lifted the skirt of one of our fairer lady observers, one of the Athenians drew a knife and threatened revenge. The Tech coaches hurried themselves back to the game offering apologies and coins. Because of their vile nature, the Techs were poked and gouged with canes on plays toward the boundary lines. Some of the crowd had the privilege of the gridiron equally with the players.

True, that day the Blacksmiths defeated Georgia 28-6 on four scores by Leonard Wood, a thirty-three year old who did not matriculate at the Technology school. Travesty was called and agreed up.

The Techs as they departed our fair field announced loudly and to all that they had used a heterogeneous collection of Atlanta residents - a United States Army surgeon, a medical student, a lawyer, and an insurance agent among them, with here and there a student of Georgia’s School of Technology thrown in to give the mixture a Technological flavor. The scoundrels!

For this callous yet frank admission, our dear fans defended the integrity of the University by hurling rocks and other debris at the offending Tech players and chased the ill-mannered Blacksmiths back to their awaiting train.

Ahh, the days. A loss is made better by a hurled stone. I had not hurled any in quite some time. I will take a loss every eight years just to launch a few at the scoundrels.

So I guess Richt doesnt have faith in his team to score style points or be able to put away the Spartans. Richt is getting everyone prepared for another nail bitter. Come out to Denver where we share our Game Watching location with MSU. It will be exciting for all of us, and we think MSU will put UGA to a great test. Stopping Ringer, and special teams will be the key to the game.

If UGA can isolate recievers, open off tackle for the run, they can win handily. If we tackle soundly, and limit the penalties, we should win. Anyone in Denver, come on down to the Blake Street Tavern and watch it with the Colorado Dawgs.

uga-brave, You are correct in that Richt won’t fire Willie, but he won’t have to. D. Evans means what he says about closing the gap with Florida because the big money people say he has to. Adams knows this also. Richt will be way down the line on the WM decision when and if it has to be made. Personally, I beieve the D will get turned around, hopefully beginning with today against MSU. The practice issues Richt spoke about are big. Georgia will not be soft in ‘09. Now that being said, we may find out what kind of men some of these players will or won’t become. Players like Rashad Jones and some of the others who it seem’s can not focus and execute the “Georgia way” as Richt puts it, will either shape up or will be put out of the way. We will have “Q” Banks back at safety, and is a big hitter who will push Jones this spring. There are a lot of people who are very disturbed by Asher Allen’s cover up about his hand. This kind of selfishness can not be tolerated. The injuries really are a bigger problem than a lot of folks want to admit. If everyone will remember, Jeff Owens drew a heap of double teams from most opponents, allowing Geno Atkins to have holes to get pressure through. While Corvey Irvin did a pretty good job of filling in, he just does not have the wide body presence that Owens has. Willie’s defense, as we have been told many times by Richt, really does rely heavily on front four pressure to be successful. We should have some good help coming at DE, so just maybe things will tighten up on the D. Also I know eveyone thinks that Stafford and Moreno are playing their last game for UGA today, but I’m not so sure about that. Let’s just watch and see what happens today, and I think the Dawg Nation will be a lot happier around 4:45pm today at game’s end than were the Tech Mites last night!!! GATA!!!!

LSU shuts out Tech, the same Tech that ran thru Dawgs like running for a Plane. Well Coach Richt must have been thinking, “that doesn’t mean nothing, our players are to blame. I mean, they are all slow and undersized maybe.”I wish the reporters were man enough to ask Richt these question (point blank), and ask for a decent response. Make him answer the question without some lame answer he always gives. In fact, ask the water girl, she is tougher than Richt. Martinez, wake up, you are full of crap and can’t coach in the SEC, period. Ga. will always lose at least 2 games a yr with Wee Willie and Richt needs to take a pay CUT. Yes a pay cut, 10 games a yr. isn’t nothing to brag about with the recruiting base he has. One of the best in the country. Also the school adminstrators need to HOLD Richt accountable! He’s is an employee isn’t he?

If the Dogs can avoid the penalties and turnovers, they will win the game. Just look at Vanderbilt! Zero turnovers and zero penalties. Got beat miserably in 1st downs and yardage but won the bowl game. If the Dogs could have played in that style, this season would have been much different and we definitely would not be playing in a consolation bowl.

Chip thats the problem, you all writer gods assume to much. Can you see into the future or something to know Mich St. cant beat Ga? Well…look back into your cyrstal ball and see they are 9-3 for a reason and our defense couldn’t stop a rolling tomatto right now if it wanted to. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day and to boast otherwise is foolish…PS. in the future you should give thought to bulliten board material you write and I’ll laugh at you if Ga looses…thanks for giving them extra motivation…

Tech fans — back to reality. Hope you enjoyed your success and your lone victory against UGA in the past 8 years. Tech gets blown out by an SEC team and UGA is about to light up a Big 11 team.
