UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Looking at Dogs’ glass as half full
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from the lobby of the J.W. Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes, and a nice lobby it is. I haven’t seen so much marble since my last trip to Washington D.C.
I’m waiting on Tim Tucker to come down so we can ride over to Georgia’s practice this morning at Olympia High. There will be a press conference later today and I have a lot of interviews to get in order to write tomorrow’s story. Trouble with getting two weeks off is the only legwork you get done is whatever you get exercising (in my case not much).
Regarding today’s blog, I’m tired of all the whining. Maybe it’s because of the bright sunshine and perfect weather we’re encountering down here or maybe it’s just because I just woke up on the right side of the bed but I’m not seeing all the doom and gloom I’ve been reading in the comments here lately.
So let’s focus on the positives. Like Georgia’s offensive line. Think about it, every one of this group will be back next season. Vince Vance will be the only senior. The trouble next season will be figuring out who to play where. Do you put Trinton Sturdivant back at left tackle and move All-SEC left tackle Clint Boling back to right guard or right tackle? If it’s right tackle what then do you do with Justin Anderson? Does Vance move back to guard?
Regardless, these are good problems to have. And regardless of what Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford decide to do, that line is why I think Georgia’s offense will still be explosive next season. That line should make the transition to the next guys more smooth.
I don’t think Georgia’s defense can do anything but get better. Most of this group is back. The interior line loses only Corvey Irvin and will add Jeff Owens back in. We’ll see some new blood move in at defensive end. Three-fourths of the secondary is back. Again, lots of young talent to see on that side of the ball.
And isn’t that, after all, what’s great about college football? It’s a cyclical sport. Everything is going to change every four or five years.
Now I’m going to finish my cup of coffee. It’s still half full.

Sorry about the screwup with the blog this morning, guys. I think we’ve got the issues worked out so hopefully we won’t have any problems. Now to football …
It was an absolutely gorgeous morning for Georgia’s practice at Olympia High School over on the west side of Orlando. Temperatures were in the high 60s with a nice little breeze and CMR was saying how perfect it was to work out in… .
I talked to LB Demarcus Dobbs and he said — without much conviction I must add — that it was “about 50-50” whether he’d be able to play with his sprained ankle. He certainly didn’t look too close to playing with his foot in a boot and on crutches. “I’m planning on playing,” he said. Unfortunately it’s not up to him… .
A ridiculous number of players in green jerseys were walking around the track during practice. By my count Georgia will have 24 players injured or completely out for this game. Incredible… .
I don’t know why the Rodney Garner rumors continue to persist but CMR said he was pretty certain that Garner is no longer talking to Auburn or anybody. Keeping him and Searels is a big deal… .
Can’t tell a lot from one day with the players but in general their attitude appears to be upbeat and positive for the bowl game.
By NO, the Dallas Cowboys...

Chip,
Is there going to be any kind of breakdown of Orlando and what to do/see for those of us attending the game? Such as places to eat and most importantly will there be a Dawg Walk before the game?
I remember reading quite a bit of information for the ASU game and think that would be really helpful for those of us taking the trip down there.
Thanks.

I agree with Mark Richt. That 10th win is huge. Alot of people, including many supposed Georgia fans, have attempted to portray this season as a collosal and embarassing meltdown of epic proportions. Its kind of hard to get away with that when the team has a 10-3 record. Its not what we wanted, but its still pretty good.

WIth the best returning RB and QB in the college ranks, UGa goes 9-3 and gets obliterated in their two big games. The D returned almost everyone and stunk, Bobo can’t call plays when they get behind, and Richt can’t recruit a top OT to save his life.
Moreno and Stafford should both go pro and get away from Mark Richt, the most overrated coach in the SEC, who will never win a national championship.

I agree the whining can get old, but this is one of the most prodigious offenses UGA has ever had. It would have been nice to see them play against a BCS defense.
Next year, the offense will be fine and the line should be excellent. My worries still center around a young kids ability to put on muscle weight in the offseason along the defensive line.
I still believe we have talent on the defensive side of the ball, but they were out of position. If that is corrected, it could be a great year.
I hope we start off 2009 right!

You must have missed the part where Clint Boling was named All-SEC and Trinton Sturdivant was a freshmen All-American last year. Please don’t ever talk about football again without permission from your parents kid. You are clueless.

Huh? Do the names Michael Oher, Andre Smith, and Ciron Black ring a bell little girl. I’m not talking about freshman who start. I’m talking about guys who break open the line and give Moreno a hole to run through once in a while.
Richt’s the total package: a complete fraud.

CHIP - I agree, we should be pretty good next year. My concern will still be the same as it was going into this season and that was pressure from the edge.
That said, I’ve never really seen any kind of explanation on why our tackling became so atrocious. Dis you ever ask that question or hear any theories on it?

I’m so glad someone else is tired of the constant whining! Enough already. Some of these people need to get their priorities in order. We did not so as well as we hoped this year for multiple reasons. The bottom line is I have faith that Coach Richt will do what it takes to get us where we want to be.

Yeah and Moreno will run for more in the pros when he gets a real line. The OL stunk both years. And while we’re talking about recruiting deficiencies at OT, let’s not forget the inability to recruit a CB who can cover man-to-man.
But the main thing is Florida and Alabama have big-time coaches. Ga has a coach who would do fine in the WAC or MAC or some little conference - not the SEC.

I’m not talking about freshmen who start either. I’m talking about freshmen All-Americans. They don’t just give that award out to freshmen who start genius. You made an absolutely baseless assertion that Richt cannot recruit top OT. The facts do no support that assertion. Clint Boling and a healthy Sturdivant are two of the best in the SEC. Some would argue Sturdivant could be one of the best in the nation. You are indeed clueless.

Is Demarcus Dobbs a linebacker now? I thought Coach Richt would KNOW if his Recruiting Coordinator and Asst. Head Coach & D-Line Coach was still talking to another school during Bowl Prep. Is it possible that he wouldn’t know? Much as I love Knowshon and our quarterback and don’t want them to leave it’s line and defense that win the big games consistently. That’s hardly a new observation. Interesting that UT won it all after Peyton left.I look forward to next year. And Coach Richt will definintely win a championship

Nice column as always Chip. Unfortunately, you are always going to have those that are always negative. They are probably the same ones who have criticised the Falcons and Arthur Blank and Mat Ryan and everybody else. Mark Richt is a class act. We are lucky to have him. Just because things didn’t go our way this year, it’s ridiculous to hang him out to dry. Most of the low comments come from immature non-Ga fans!

Chip,
You sound like my stock broker telling me the market has to go up next year. Things can always get worse.
I do remain optimistic, but hedged. Forget about talent and wins and losses. For a program that has featured the mantra “Finish the Drill” this team was not able to once put together a complete 60 minute game. The Tech game, as hurtful as it was, probably was a close as we came to a complete effort, however poorly we tackled.
I believe coaching was our biggest disappointment of the year. Do not get me wrong, I want the entire coaching staff to stay in Athens for years to come. I support them all, especially Willie. We played flat, we played out of position, play calling was predictable (how many possessions started 2 and 10?), it was just hard to watch.
Sorry for Whining, but this same coaching staff has really developed talent and gotten the max out of the roster from day one. We need to get away from the gimmicks, the jersey’s and the sideline motivational huddles and get back to playing nasty defense with violence. AND THAT STARTS IN PRACTICE!!!!
I know they will get it straightened out and bounce of the bottom of 2008.
Go Dawgs!

Same hype at the end of 2008 as there was in 2007. Probably same result. Stop talking and start doing. CMR is not a tough coach, UGA will get 9-10 wins every year, be hyped to the max and never win championships because his players do not play with heart and desire. Thats why Alabama and UF had their way with us. Regardless of the UA 2nd half.
Remember, our national championship was won with defense. Not possible with this team. Enjoy the mediocre years.

This year was an eye opener for many including myself. I drank the kool aid and thought we would dominate…injuries took its toll no doubt but Id say lack luster coaching and execution on defense killed us.
One can talk about “prolific offense” but it really doesnt matter if the defense muster a decent showing. But back to the prolific offense…haha thats laughable…because we dropped alot of points on sorry teams. And the 31 points in the 2nd half against Bama was garbage points.
My point is you can throw all the points up on the board as you want but if there is no defense then it really doesnt matter. like the tech game…OOoooo stafford threw for 5 td’s…..yeah but we still lost.
I am tired of excuses just get the job done and lets finish the drill. I am not happy with this no accountibility thing that is going on.

It’s good to have a coach like Searles who is a business approach type of guy. He doesn’t do interviews which I think is a good thing. The media sure doesn’t like it but he is paid to coach not to please talking heads or sport pundits. This guy has done a remarkable job with the offensive line and that’s more than Willie has done since he has been there at UGA. Maybe next year our players will not buy into all the media hype, also don’t do silly AJC videos and concentrate solely on football. I think that would be a positive approach for next year.

It may be negative to some … but the major improvement to the Dawgs would come if Willie Martinez went to the pros and left MS and KM behind. It will be a nightmare next year with Willie Mart back in his old form. With this great a negative at defense coordinator … it’s very difficult to be positive. To Gator gonna bit that dog, I can still distinctly remember a Big Ten Romping of Florida last year, can you? I also can remember that UF didn’t even win a conference championship until the 90’s. I can also remember that period of 19 years that UGA beat the Gators regularly, like almost every year. Can you? Yes you have beat us too much as of the last two decades, but to label us as the MSU of the SEC is completely false. Despite my complete hate of the Gators I can still admit they are a top-tier program, becasue I am intelligent. Why can’t you admit that UGA is? Are you not intelligent? Look at the records for Richt’s tenure, and our history, and our conference championships record. Just cause you root for a completely classles team and come from a horrible fan base doesn’t mean you have to ignore the facts.

EF Hutton, Not doubting that you are correct in that all of it was an issue, but you sound as if it was some coaching decision not to have those thing be the same as the previous 7 yrs. Good to hear from you Chip. I agree with the latter, half full. I’m not going to spend the next 8 mos complaining. The Dawgs will be fine on offense with King, Samuel maturing, and Ealy coming in. Joe Cox knows the system and is a smart QB. If he goes down we have Logan Gray who can run. Not to mention having the two prep QB’s coming in next year. I beleive the D will work hard to improve their play. They have a fast DE in Cornelius Washington and Toby Jackson coming in with Battle, Houston, and Dobbs still in the mix and improving. Also, a fine recrutuing class once again. Hopefully the Dawgs can sign Branden Smith and some others. A lot of folks are down on CMR but I have faith in him and the rest of the coaches. The kids didnt handle the expectations as well as they could have this season but I am sure it will be a very good lesson learned for 2009.

I’m a Vol fan, and would kill for a chance to reverse our records. That having been said, I cannot see the Dawgs improving overall next year. You might have a chance if Stafford returns, but that would only be if he would rather take the chance that he might not get hurt, over having to end up in Detroit. His backup will take time and training to come anywhere near to Stafford. Recipe for losses. It is what it is.
Why do I say that things will not improve? It is a reality that you will be losing some key parts of your offense. It is also a reality that you were giving up three to five touchdowns a game against most teams (except for my Vols and Auburn, who could not score in a Mexican cathouse with a brand new hundred dollar bill taped to their foreheads).
My point is that there has been a major dropoff in your defensive stats since Van Gorder left, and it seems to be getting worse not better. With Tebow’s backup possibly as good or better than he is, you will not be able to give up thirty points a game and win the SEC East…it is what it is. If you cannot win the SEC East, you cannot win the SEC. If you cannot win the SEC, you probably will not get to a BCS, much less the NC.

The fact is that we will have seven starters to fill five O-line positions next year, barring injuries. Personally, I would put Sturdivant back at left tackle and move Boling, who has proven that he can play well almost anywhere. Whether Stafford comes back or not, we will be fine at QB. Cox and Gray can both play. Tailback will be the concern next year. Also the defense, where we had plenty of returning starters who didn’t play well at all. Also, despite a good offense, the offense didn’t play well against Alabama and Florida. I thought the onside kick against Florida was a stupid call, but what do I know, I’m just a fan who pays big bucks for tickets each year. Maybe our pass rush will improve next year. Could it get any worse?

Off the subject… but I was reading the article about SAT scores. I found it interesting that UGA had the highest SAT scores in the SEC (vandy not included in the list) but then I realized that the stats were from 1997-1999 from UGA and more recent from other years… What a waste of an article that was. Atleast learn how to do research before printing something as useless as this up.

OK dawg boys and girls: Happy New Year and njoy the win in Orlando. It’s all downhill from there. In 2 weeks Stafford and Moreno announce they are going “bye bye”. You will see Jonny was right next year when you realize the glass is 3/4 empty and Ga struggles to get above .500. You’ll all be calling for Richt to be fired a year from now.
Georgia is just mediocre. It’s too, too bad that Florida and Alabama have great programs and great coaches and they have you surrounded.

I think the thing I’m dissapointed about with this season is how the players didn’t try from the Florida game on. I can deal with 9-3 if I felt like this team went out there and battled and came up short. But I don’t think any of these guys can say that, at least not with any consistency. I would like to think that they will will blowout Michigan State. They certainly have the talent to do it, but will they care enough? If they do then this won’t be a game. If they don’t then it will be the Tech game all over again. These guys don’t owe it to the school or it’s fans to play well, they owe it to themselves. They’re the ones that have to look at themselves in the mirror.

P.S.: I love how everyone is sucking up to Nick Saban and Urban Meyer this year and calling them great coaches when they are just a year removed from 6-6 and 9-4. These same fans were singing Mark Richt’s praises this time last year. Saban and Meyer have done a good job this season but let’s hold off on all this ” great coach” stuff until they finish out their tenure.

I believe that the 2009 team can do well. The OL will be as stable and talented as it has been since 2002. Stafford and Moreno back will make UGA top 5 material. Joe Cox/Logan Gray and Caleb King/Washaun Ealey make us top 15 material.
I am OK with it either way because I’m hoping that Joe Cox can win big and manage a game better than Stafford. There have been plenty of college QB’s who thrived with a good defense, a good running game and a solid OL while limiting mistakes.
Jonny, go back to your room and finish playing your video games.

Obviously Charlotte Dawg, you have not seen the high school stats for Tebow’s backup. I agree with everything you said about Tebow, but you apparently don’t know crap about what is coming up behind him. Tebow’s backup broke Tebow’s high school records in Florida.
Perhaps I should have worded my comments in a different way, but if you think that Florida is going to drop off much by Tebow leaving you are the fool. You are staring through those same rose and black colored glasses that the Dawgs who think that GA is the NC before they even play a down each year.

By mediocre?
December 30, 2008 4:53 PM | Link to this
If UGA is mediocre what does that make the rest of the SEC? UGA is the only team in the SEC to finish in the top 25 the last ten years. Under Richt UGA has finished all 7 years in the top 25, 4 years in the top 10 (2nd, 3rd, 7th and 10th). In the same 7 years FLA only finished in the top 25 4 times and only once in the top 10. FLA was 12-1 the year they won the MNC same record UGA had in 2002. LSU was 11-2 last year same as UGA so that just shows luck plays a part of the MNC. UGA is consistent under Richt and it is only a matter of time before it all comes together.

dan, how about we start plucking players off that Alabama team one by one, and see what a genious Saban would be. Lets start with Andre Smith before they even start, then his next 2 replacements. What the hell, lets cripple caldwell for a few games. Now lets put Travis McCall and Nick Walker in a shoulder sling. Maybe Arenis plays with a broken hand for a while. Brandon deaderick, can’t play. How about losing one of the best NT in the SEC Cody in the first game? Oh and for good measure about 15 more reserves and special team guys. How we doing now? Saban is a great coach and will be extremely successful, but he does not beat Ky or Ole Miss with that many “oh its just part of the game” key players out in those close games. Beat LSU in OT, doubtful.

The Georgia haters are what’s wrong w/ this country. Everybody wants everything TODAY! My God, if a HC doesn’t win w/ in 2 to 4 years, he’s fired. Look at JoPa, Bobby Bowden or even Tom Osbourne. Those guys took 20+ years to win a NC. Richt has had a great 8 year run here, and if he wants to stay for 20 more, he’ll be even more successful.
If you want something bad enough, you’ll wait for it, because in the end it will be all the more special. I think the UGA “haters” out there pretty much don’t have anything worthwhile in their lives to brag about, so they have to log onto a UGA blog and bring us down so we’ll be on their level. Pretty sad actually.

Chip,
You call it whining I call it reality.
Florida is going for a 2nd NC in four years under Meyer, and will more than likely win it.
8 years in and Georgia is right back in a meaningless bowl game.
As I say each time I post…it is the approach. Meyer and Saban are hard-nosed, no nonsense, and aggresive in mentality.
Richt is the lovable neighbor that all the neighbors know they can take advantage of.
Great person, very good coach and I hope he stays in Athens forever. I just wish he could change a little or hire a “bad guy” you know, like the next Van Gorder cause he ain’t ever comin back. Heck, even in saying that I don’t want Martinez fired…just wish the approach would change.
Reality, not whining sir.

O-line does look good for next year, most importantly Coach Serals. Glad he’s staying. Should get some kind of award for putting together the type of o-line he did this year with all the injuries. Noticed in an article where CMR gave Serals a raise and unless i read wrong gave the other coaches a raise also. Coaching and pay scales are not in sync with the real world where raises are based on performance and production. I’m sure they all deserved it. This “wait til next year” malarkey has got to stop. I hope our team does great next year, and I am a Dawg either way. But, I will NOT be optimistic until this team proves that it can man-up each and every week. Thus far, it has not come closing to proving it can do so. Plus, Willie Martinez is back, and the defense has been the problem, not so much the offense. So, spin it how you like, Chip, but there is no room for optimism at this point.

Chip, in your article about 5 plays that defined the season, you write that Akeem Dent still believes that was a bad call by the officials when he slapped John Parker Wilson (Alabama QB) in the facemask. His failure to realize that was a DUMB PLAY but was the CORRECT CALL by the officials is part of the problem in Athens. The fact that his coach, or coaches, let him still believe that that was not Akeem Dent’s personal foul and was the correct call is part of the problem. No sir, as long as that attitude persists, our defense will be no better than it was in its pitiful effort in ‘08. Reference my previous blog entry at 7:56 p.m.)

Top Dawg, Ga fans like you are killing me.Last year we played subs on def almost as much as starters and held the last 6 teams to under 300 yards a game.We really missed guys like Hebron and Dewberry .I know they are not starters but it makes your starters that much better when rested. We basically lost Owens our best DT and Weston played backup not at a 100% and Ellerbee our leading tackler and voted by coaches (All SEC linebacker)I will admit one of the biggest dissapointments was no pass rush, which I hope Toby Jackson or someone steps up next year.To many injuries 6 linebackers out for the Ga Tech game, they had only one TD in the first half is there a chance that no back ups at LB caused the second half to be different?Other than Alabama if you look back we got real sloppy when tired in second half of ball games.Ga fans we will be OK next year if we don’t lose so many players again that we have to play our cheer leaders and you fans think we shouldn’t miss a beat.

Top Dawg, I agree with you, another comment made by Samuel, said he didn’t really know what happened on the fumble in the Tech game.I thought you go back and review mistakes to try and correct them.We are not disciplined in that area (personal fouls)but neither was FSU when they finished in the top5 for all those years. What was so unfortunate was when they came!Tebows interception and Ala’s fumble, crucial times!

Chip — Thanks for clearing up the rumor about the “fight” in practice. Figured it was just a little extra contact after the whistle.
The O-Line will be a massive force next season if they can stay healthy. Searels will be able to rotate those guys at will to keep them fresh. The D-Line should be solid barring injuries as well. And getting Marcus Washington back will be a big boost to stopping the run. Give Willie a chance with some healthy guys and see what he can do……maybe we’ll get the same result as we did in ‘07. BVG’s defense in ATL isn’t lights out either my friends!!!! Yeah his UGA teams were better statistically but look at the level of offensive competition in the SEC at that time. Florida had Zook and Leak. Bama had Shula and Croyle. UT was w/out Cutcliffe and had Clausens at QB, etc. A healthy Georgia D will be solid in 09.
Let’s get MoMass and AJ to 1,000 yards receiving and grab that 10th win. GO DAWGS!!!!
I wonder if Techies put the score of the Gardner Webb game on the rings too? Normally you don’t receive a ring unless you win a conference championship or national title. Guess they know that won’t happen anytime soon so just take what ya can get!

DawgMite,
If you go back and look at the video from that play with Samuel, you’ll see the kid was fighting for yardage and had defenders on him for about 5 yards before he went down and the ball came out. The kid runs harder than anyone I’ve seen in years. He could’ve just hit the ground at the first sign of contact but he’s not scared of contact. He was freakin’ 17 years old. Get off his back. He’ll hold onto the ball and will continue to run all over people in the coming years. His fumble did not cause the loss to Tech.

Every body knows Tebow was short on that mark on the first drive and should have had to punt for what would have been 4 punts in there first 5 possessions. The score was only 14 -3 8 minutes to go in the 3rd quater and us on fl’s29 yard line when Joe Haden was faked out and clearly grabbed AJ Green for TD the other way making the score 21-3(Danielson the commentator was saying Haden got away with one before he even got in the endzone! That was our 5th possession and we had only punted on our first possession.Fl’s 28th point was the play the receiver about pulled Asher Allens jersey off to get about 3 yards open, the 35th point was after the missed pitch that gave them the ball on our one.The replay of Tebow was not a missed call he was clearly short and we got rcheated is the bottom line.It was the same crew from the year before we had teed off with endzone celebration.BTW we had more yards in the game, when you get int’s for TD’s and missed pitches to your one yard line that is how scores end up like that.

At Tech’s current winning pace vs. Georgia (9-25 since 1975), if Tech players get a ring every time they beat Georgia, then they will have one for each finger around 2042.

Actually since Richt has been at UGA, UGA DOES NOT have the best winning % in conference play. Florida’s is better and that’s with 3 years of Zook.
In addition Richt is 2 and 6 vs. UF and 1-3 vs. Meyer who knows what it’s like to coach in a National Championship game.
Lastly UGA has NEVER made the SEC Championship game without having to rely on another team to beat UF because they didnt those years.

Your right once Fl was given the 21-3 lead you dropped your coverage deep because you knew he had to pass.According to Charlie Strong there Dline is so small they have to play 8 in the box to stop the run when the refs let Haden clearly grab Green across the waist and pull his self back into the play for a TD the other way the game was over.Calling me a whiner dosn’t bother me,whether we would have beat Fl without the cheating I don’t know.Stafford did miss Chandler running with nobody even on him in the back of the endzone and our kicker had missed two chip shot field goals, kind of like Billy Bennett a few years ago.So who knows probably Fl would have won if I had to pick, but the FACT FACT FACT is Tebow was CLEARLY SHORT,and HADEN CLEARLY grabbed Green to end any chance Ga Had.Yes call me awhiner because I don’t care if people think i’m politically correct like so many on here worry about. And as to last year It wouldn’t have meant anything to me to win a MYTHICAL NC with two losses.

If the post are stupid why don’t you respond to what part is stupid or a lie, other than to cut me down.I admitted that Fl probably would have won,in the last almost ten years we have lost some close games that we should have won kinda like when Vince beat some teams during his domination that he shouldn’t have.BTW I will admit when I’m wrong our record is 48-19 ,while FL’s 48-18 the difference being we played in the championship game one more year than FL and lost.CMR has tied or won the SEC east 4 out of 8 years and won 2 SEC championships. No other SEC team has won more during that same time.THE STUPID ones are the ones to call that average.BTW only GA and USC had finished in the top ten for the previous 6 years.Average HUH?

1) Regarding the constant invasion of the terds and gaytors on UGA boards - they are jealous
2) Regarding CMR not winning a NC, if it wasn’t for the politicking of ESPN, UGA would have been in the NC game last year

All time record against each other: UGA: 46 wins uf: 37 wins ties: 2

I wish we would have done better, but we did not. Oh Well. UF & Bama where better teams the days we played them. Plain and simple. I give credit for Tech’s victory, but I can’t say they were better, Sorry. We gave that game to them. Again, I’m not taking credit away from Tech. You guys won. hats off to ya.

Like Chip said the negative posts and whining are getting old. The season wasn’t as good as we hoped but UGA is on the verge of another 10-win season, a possibility fans of many schools would love to celebrate. Truth be told, the DAWGS have never had a many successful years in a row like they have had under CMR. Truth be told, FLA is on a roll and is difficult for anyone in the SEC to beat. But if you follow football and other sports, these things go in cycles, so the Gators will have a down period … please, god make it happen!!
But I feel good about next year and the seasons to come. Good talent is coming in and the OL looks solid for several more seasons. If CMR and WillieM fulfill their promises to review all aspects of the defense and make updates, that will be better too.
Like many of us have said, we’re looking to the future … something all sports fans do. Sure, we love to review the past and punch holes in areas we don’t like . At the same time, folks like Jonny really need to go to a therapist and find other outlets to vent their anger. Perhaps punching his SpongeBob Squarepants Doll 2 or 3 times a day. Or maybe a Buzz Doll.
Either way, you really need some alternative outlets or you’ll go postal, dude!

Haha. Alabama and Florida are the big names. UGa is 2nd tier. Face it. It’s not even a question of whether I like ‘Bama more historically - it’s about me believing that Richt could win this year and then I saw the result.
3 losses doesn’t capture the depths of UGa’s failure. It was that Georgia was crushed by both Florida and ‘Bama and then loses to in-state rival Tech who ran all over the overrated Dawg D like they were a Div 3 team. I mean that was just pathetic.
You can make all the excuses you want about injuries but failures like that tell me one thing: Richt is in over his head and isn’t a good enough coach to win a national championship.

How in the world did the play where AJ Green inexplicably handed the ball to the Alabama defended who was just running by NOT come is as the defining play in that game. UGA finally driving, Green with plenty of open field ahead of him and the ball goes the other way. My buddy at the game with me that night, said as soon as that happened, that was going to end up being the difference in the game. 11 point loss, 10-14 point swing on that one play. If we had scored one time in that half, it would have been a completely different ballgame.
The INT was the nail in the coffin at J-ville to be sure. I wonder if any of the “oh youth and injuries are just something that the rest of the college teams in America hade to deal with equally as much as we did” crowd would admit that a more mature O-line would have been pretty helpful during the 3 trips inside the 10 we had and not even close to being able to line it up and punch it in. 21 points or 3? But then again WM personally not able to hold UF to 9 points was really the story.

Buzz——You have an interesting nickname for a Dawg fan, but that apparently isn’t all that is wrong with your post above. There are numerous factual and statistical errors in your data. Here are the University of Florida’s correct records and historical statistics (as opposed to those cited by you):
(1) The Gators’ all-time win-loss-tie record is 640-373-40 (.6318); the Dawgs’ is 723—384-54 (you appear to be 2 seasons behind the curve).
(2) The Dawgs started playing varsity football in 1891; the Gators fielded their first varsity football team in 1906. As a result, the Dawgs have played 108 more games than the Gators, accounting for most, if not all, of the 83 more all-time wins that the Dawgs have.
(3) Notwithstanding the fact that the University of Florida fielded its first varsity football team in 1906, the University of Georgia athletic department includes a 1904 win over a non-varsity club team from the old Florida Agriculture College in Lake City as a win over the University of Florida. According to georgiadogs.com, the official athletics website of the University of Georgia, “Georgia’s rivalry with Florida begins with a 52-0 romp over the Gators [sic] in Macon.” The “Gators” did not exist in 1904. The first actual game played by teams from the two universities was played in 1915 in Jacksonville (UGA won 37-0).
For the record, Florida Agriculture College was one of the three constituent schools that merged to form the University of Florida in 1905. The University of Florida celebrated 100 years of Gator football in 2006. Draw your own conclusions.
(4) The Florida-Georgia all-time head-to-head is 46-38-2 (not the 46-37-2 cited by you) following the 2008 season. Georgia still leads the series by eight wins, but the Gators have gained 13 games in the last 19 seasons (16 - 3 = 13).
Of the first 15 games played between 1915 and 1936, UGA won 12, lost 2 and tied 1. In games played since 1934, the series is tied 34-34-1. The SEC was formed in 1933.
(5) Total points scored in the Florida-Georgia series: UGA 1664, UF 1388 following the 2008 season (not the point totals cited by you).
(6) Three Gators have won the Heisman Trophy (Spurrier ‘66, Wuerffel ‘96, Tebow ‘07), not the 2 cited by you. Additionally, two Gators have won the Maxwell Trophy (Wuerffel ‘96, Tebow ‘07), not the zero cited by you.
(7) National championships? The UGA athletic department claims 2 consensus national championships in 1942 and 1980 (based on a majority of poll and publications), but notes that at least one publication credited UGA as the best team in three other seasons (1927, 1946 and 1968). The 1927 and 1968 claims are shaky since UGA lost the last game in both seasons to finish 9-1 and 8-2-1, respectively.
Florida won national championship games following the 1996 and 2006 seasons, and played in a third following the 1995 season. The Gators can also claim publication/poll championships in 1984 and 1985, but do not. The Gators will play in their fourth national championship game on January 8, 2008. Only Nebraska has won three national championship games during the Bowl Alliance-Coalition-Championship Series era (1993-2008), and Florida now has an opportunity to equal Nebraska’s three championship game victories during that time.
Only one team, Florida State, has played in 5 championship games, winning 2 and losing 3.

This is more depressing than reading about the economy. You people should qualify for a group discount on anti-depressants and take the whole bottle. I’m just glad I’m not a UGA fan. To be in this state of mind would be grewsome. Tech should give the players new cars for beating UGA. There is no gift too good for that accomplishment. This game simply means more to Tech than it does to UGA. Go back to your Florida inferiority complex.

Until we get a real DC, or at the very least a LB coach with a pair, the best days of the Richt era are behind us.
Florida got in Urban what we thought we were going to get in Richt. Urban, of course, unerstands that defense is not a limp wristed trade.
Bobby Bowden, Richt’s mentor, ALWAYS surrounds himself with madmen for coordinators (Fisher? Andrews? D’Amato?). Until Mr. Nice guy realizes this, until he puts the Dawgs’ need for a DC in front of his own want for a friend, we will continue to watch the Gators represent the East.

Oh the morons… Tech fans, you won a game. I wouldn’t expect you to act like you have been there before. UGA is still in a better bowl game than you. Not to mention, that half of you were on here a month ago talking about how Paul Johnson must go after you got spanked by UNC. The other half weren’t even fans.
Gators- you were exactly where we are now last year. Headed to Orlando to play a team from Michigan. As I remember, you guys got smoked so you have absolutely no leg to stand on. You embarrassed yourselves and the SEC by getting thumped by a second tier Big-Ten team. Especially after running out talking all that smack… At least when we had the “celebration”, we backed it up.
Now that is out of the way, the Dawgs are still on track to have a 10 win season. There are a lot of schools that would love to say that. I don’t know why everyone is making such a fuss about it. 2 of the teams we lost to are ranked in the top 5 in the nation. Tech should have been a win, but 7 bad minutes cost us. I guess we had to give them a reason to hand out little rings… How cute…

Jonny. You obviously live in a van down by the river. You need a therapist, terribly. Someone who will help you find other outlets in life. After further review you don’t need anger management, but complete behavioral change. We’re recommending 6 to 12 months inpatient treatment to develop and execute a life-changing plan that will help you find other activities in life … perhaps painting your van down by the river in multi colors.
TW will be your room mate while your are secluded from the rest of us. Enjoy the drugs. They’re expensive but very effective.
I hope and pray your treatment and time with TW is successful.

Buzz your history lesson is far from a lesson its not even factual.
For example UF has 3 Heisman trophies to UGA’s 2. UF has 2 National titles to UGA’s 1. If you want to start counting National Titles the way Bama does then it’s UF 3 UGA 2.
It’s funny you have to resort to making up stuff and talking about games won before ww2 to make yourselves feel better about being owned about UF. You have to be well over 50 to have seen a winning record vs. UF in your lifetime, so con grats on the series record that is owned because your grea great grandfathers won games while playing with Leather helmets. I’ll take winning Championships and kicking your tails for the last 20 years in MODERN times instead of having to brag about games played well before intergration.

ATLANTA GATOR, is this a GATOR COLUMN?
Is it a confidence thing? Funny, last year all of you shut up pretty well. now you’re back huh?
You bother Dawgs on our blogs and you wonder why no one likes the University of Florida.—-Hmmm—I wonder why with representatives like yourself. So go back to the swamp, reptile, and give yourself a quick death roll.

Actually Dawg4life here’s a aleg for the Gators to stand on…Last year UF wasn’t the preseason #1 team who ended up in Orlando. UF didn’t get blown out twice last year.
Here’s another leg to stand on… 49-10 SEC Champs National Title Game
Celebrate that mutt!

“AtlantagatorGO_HOME”——No need to be so sassy. The point was to correct a variety of mistakes and inaccurate information regarding the Florida-Georgia series provided by another blogger.
BTW, that’s a “victory roll,” not a “death roll.” LOL

Old Dawg - you seem to enjoy sniffing the Gator’s backside. Explains your love affair with Martinez. No doubt you also enjoyed the Donnan years of kneeling in front of Fat Phil.
You’d make a great Kentucky fan.

I see where Tech got rings with 45-42 on them a better ring would be 1 out of 8 or maybe 1 and 7 which is their record against the dawgs for the past 8 years good luck next year losers

As long as UGA has that hypocrite Mark Richt and Willie Martinez UGA will never win a National Title. So keep making excuses why Georgia can’t make it to the big dance. UGA = JUST AN AVERAGE PROGRAM AND 4TH IN THE SEC.

I’ve never enjoyed losing to the Gators, and never will. As for the series to UT, what Dawg fan enjoyed those years?
You obviously need a longer time in the psycho ward, so your admission is extended until you can learn who to make a post without a vulgar line. Perhaps electro shock treatment is in your future.

LOL. You dawg fans are the ones with all the angers. But that’s understandable. It’s the frustration of knowing Mark Richt will never win a national championship and UGa is officially a 2nd team SEC team.

Wow, so many haters. I hope all you Dawgs, Gators and Techies that seem so heartless on this site actually do not have kids on your own. This is how a game played by college kids makes you act? There is nothing wrong with a little compassion but so many of you seem full of hate for other people. Go Dawgs!

I am not now, nor will I ever be a Tech fan. I respect Tech’s academics and their accomplishments in athletics but I’ve always been a UGA fan.
But your statement is wrong — it’s your attitude and statements that hurt UGA. By maintaining unrealistic ambitions,it allows recruits to think the expectations are out of contact with reality.
Since it’s obivous you have trouble comprehending copy, read this carefully: I always want UGA to win. I expect them to win. But reality doesn’t always reflect expectations. Until you can accept that as a fact, you’re a;ways going to be an unhappy person.

UGA fans hate to see any team (sec or not ) have success. Why? Cause their program = failure. UGA fans rant rave thumb their chest on how they going to win it all. Then UGA fail just as always, their fans whine cry make pathetic excuses…then as always again UGA fans start barking thumping their chest on how they will win it next year. UGA fans always playing that same broken record every year. Win something, then you mutts fans will have something to brag about..

A real SEC team is beating up on Tech. Richt’s a loser. All that talent and he squanders it.
