UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Off to the land of Mickey

Greetings from Gate A10 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. I’m awaiting the departure of Delta Flight 957 to Orlando. Word of advice: If you’re flying out of Atlanta today, get there early. It was backing up before 7 a.m. this morning.

I’m back, folks. Sorry for the extended absence but I had a bunch of off time I had to get in before the end of the year. In sports jargon, we’re not as deep as a staff as we once were and, when one of us is sidelined there’s just not as many waiting to fill in for us. But, God willing, I’ll be joining my colleague Tim Tucker on the ground soon in Orlando and resume filing daily (multiple) reports as usual.

So let me know what’s foremost on your minds as I get there for today’s morning practice (I won’t be there in time to file any live practice reports. Sorry.) Have you heard enough about Moreno’s and Stafford’s pro decisions or do you want to know more? Are you excited about at all about the Capital One Bowl matchup with Michigan State? Are you more interested in talking about what went wrong this past season or what the expectations should be for next?

I’ll be traveling this morning, then checking in throughout the day. Next report will come from the Land of Mickey. Bon voyage!

I’m excited about the bowl game, and a little concerned about Michigan State. On paper we should kill them, but most UGA fans thought that about West Virginia a few years ago when they came ready to play and UGA did not. I’d hate to see that happen again. Glad you’re back!

Feels like months since we’ve had ligimate Dawg talk.

Would love to know if they’re are any possible personnel changes (especially for D and specifically at LB & DB) for the bowl game. Did they practice tackling for the game?

Would love to know the realities of where Stafford and Moreno stand…amongst others.

Would love to know if the staff is still tight knit with Garner and Searels talking with Auburn.

Would love to know if any other staff members (like Ball with UTC) have talked or may talk to other schools.

Would love to know the current mental state of this team…do they feel like something more special slipped away or are they just happy to be involved in something.

Would love to get a feel for what the off-season may hold as they look to correct any mistakes they feel exist.

Safe travel and have fun…don’t forget what Disney is all about!

“Off to the land of Mickey”. You play like Mickey Mouse, you get rewarded with a Mickey Mouse Bowl. You play like the Beast of the Big-Ten, you get rewarded with a BCS Bowl against the best team in the nation. Either way, people get what they deserve!

Say hey to Goofy while you’re down their Dogs!!!!! Be sure and stop by Go Gators and Florida Dog’s place along the way.

As for ……….THE……….Ohio……….State……….Buckeyes………., well, we have a can to open up on some Texas cow tippers. No, not PBR, America in a can guy. A can of whoop azz. We may not win but…..WE….. will surely cover.

Don’t envy you Chip…in Hartsfield on a Monday morning of a holiday week.

I think we don’t need anymore Matt/Knowshon draft talk. I would be interested in how serious Asher is about going. We need him back yesterday.

I know its a bit cliche, but who is the underclassman getting a good look during bowl practices? C. Thomas? N. Ball? etc…

On the bowl game, is Caleb going to finally play again? Any changes to the defense line up after the Tech game?

safe travels. Go Dawgs.

Can someone at the AJC, please assess the current situation at UGA regarding basketball. The loss that occured last week warranted more than one story. What were Damon’s thoughts or reactions? Does anyone at UGA have a comment on the lack of a pure shooting guard on this team or in the upcoming recruiting class? It doesn’t matter if we get D Favors if there is no one that can handle the ball or hit from the outside to open things up for Favors and Thompkins.

Who really cares about this Mickey Mouse Crapital One Bowl or whatever. I still cant believe UGA lost to a team in Tech from the ACC. UGA had two weeks to prepare and gave up 45 points to the youngest team in the ACC. UGA still continues to struggle with the likes of Vandy and South Carolina. Vandy lost to Duke for sakes alive! CMR needs to get on the ball because the football program seems to be moving in the wrong direction. Players getting arrested and not making simple tackles certainly falls back on the coach.

Embarrassed - chill out man. How short your memory. Was it not just 12 months ago that UGA finished ranked #2 in AP poll. Sure this year hurt, but with the injuries and youth on both front lines, frankly I’m not shocked. I know we all want the program to get over the hump and make it to the NCG, but c’mon, I went to school during the Goff/Donnan years. 10 wins a year under CMR… I’ll take it.

DawgBBall Great, great post. that is an issue Chip will write about soon I’d bet. I think if we don’t win 7 games in the SEC, Felton needs to go. We have been a “young” team for 5 years now because he can’t keep kids there… it SUCKS

The good news — I’m here. Coming to you from the beautiful J.W. Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes. Haven’t seen much but the entrance, lobby and view from my window but that’s enough to tell me this is one of the nicer joints I’ve stayed in. Thank goodness for that special bowl media rate… . The bad news, I didn’t get in time to get any interviews. They did them before practice this morning. But my esteemed colleague Tim Tucker was there and will bring you all the pertinent news. I’ll be buckled down the rest of the day banging out info and stories that you’ll read about the game this week. May catch a Michigan State media opportunity later today… . So I won’t be enjoying the four pools or golf course but I’ve got a great view outside my window any time I care to look!

I think KM stays and Stafford is gone. People can say why would Stafford wantt o go play for Detroit???? Well I got news for you Detroit isn’t getting any better next year either and the Lion wil lhave the top pick again in the following year. So the fact is a moot point. Go this year get drafted by the Lions. Go next year get drafted by the Lions.

The loss by the basket ball team is weird to say the least. Beat a good VT team and lose to TAMCC…go figure. They are 8-4 though. Win 2 out of your next 3 and your 10-5 going into the conference. Win 7-8 games in the conference and you have put yourself in a position to make a run in the SEC tourny and and the big dance. Thats all you can ask for with UGA basketball at this point. Split your conference aor go 1 up, win a game maybe 2 in the SEC tourny and hope you get selected. Jsut my thoughts.

There is no clear cut explanation for what went wrong with our football DAWGS in 2008. Naturally the huge number of injuries had an impact but, thanks to Coach Searles, the offensive line did a great job considering the circumstances. It is my biased opinion that the lack of a pass rush led to the lack of effectiveness in our defensive secondary. How could the loss of Marcus Howard cause a major breakdown in this area? I also noticed a lack of intense pursuit in plays that went for big yardage/scores. If all had the heart and desire of Rennie Curran it would have made a ton of difference. Could it be all coach Martinez? Nope, he was the defensive coordinator last year when UGA stormed to a season closing “best in the nation”. Either Martinez and company had a relapse or most of the defense didn’t give us their best. I find fault with the defensive ends, safeties and corners. Ellerbe was not as effective once he returned from his injury. When you give up 40 to 50 points to the Gators it is not national news but when you give up those type numbers to half of your schedule there is a huge problem and those in charge should have figured it out by now. Help may be on the way if we can sign Brannan Smith and can get Toby Jackson enrolled at UGA.

Go easy on the tree nut fan. He can only run his mouth before the game starts. After kickoff, the track meet starts, and OSU will finish a distant second….again for the third straight year in a BCS bowl. But finishing second in a mathematically challenged conference and second in a BCS bowl is not too bad.

I’m heading to Orlando and looking forward to going to Lee and Ricks. It is going to be a lot more fun than being stuck in The State of Ohio this week.

Best steak in America is the NY Strip at Charley’s Steak House (on International Drive -about 3 miles from wher you are staying). You want the New York strip which is not on the menu. Not the Kansas City strip but the NY Strip!

Would anyone agree that this was prabably the best year to have lost to tech, all things considered. Once the SEC goals were out, and clearly we are not in the best shape, moral, injuries, coaching issues, whatever.

It’s not like we would beat tech every year for the rest of time. Would anyone have traded this year, for last, or give away next year. What year would be ok? Given that we have won a bunch of close ones in the past, losing a close one is a certainty at some point.

I have total confidence in 2009 being a banner year, and I’d rather be playing tech with something to get back than a 8 game streak on the line.

Solutions….. since you are a fan who obviously is the type who likes for coaches to coddle their players….yes I do have one solution, hire a hard nosed defensive coordinator who knows what they are doing. CMR is paid a lot of money and its a damn shame that he being loyal to a college buddy will be his demise. Its funny when fans voice their displeasure in a teams performance they are labeled fair weathered by others. I guess most of dawg nation is fair weathered according to their line of thinking. Gee… I guess we dawg fans were guilty during the Goff and Donnan years of being fair weathered too. Maybe we should settle for this years performance in losing to Tech as Altamaha Dawg mentioned. Maybe we should settle to playing to a teams level that is lesser football team. Maybe we should settle for the defense allowing a barrage of points being scored as of the last 3 years. I wonder what should dawg fans settle for in the Mickey Mouse bowl in the next few days? Maybe we should settle of not executing a trick play. Maybe we should settle in hoping and wishing which UGA team will show up I guess!

You’re going to have to justify all of the Stafford-is-Marino claims, the Moreno-is-(name your NFL running back here) claims, and yet the dogs don’t win their division. I don’t see the big deal about the ring. Ending a long winless streak against your hated rival is pretty significant. You have stated over and over again that they have 80 conference wins in that period. I say Bama Stan was correct when he said the bulldogs are the 4th best team in the SEC since 2000. Buzz: I am not a Tech basher, but before you start calling ANYONE gutless, review the class notes of the GA-TECH game of 2002. I am 56 years old and have been watching college football since 1959. In that time I have only seen two teams that quit during a game. Tech was one of those two in 2002. Talk about a pitiful effort. One win in 8 years does not a juggernaut make. Tech has a great coach in CPJ, and they will be fine. Likewise, if CMR makes the tweaks required to his program he should be more than fine as well. Personally, I am glad the rivalary appears to be back. Again, I am old enough to remember when the GA-TECH game had real meaning.

I think it is unrealistic to expect a whole lot more from our defense in the bowl game than we have gotten previously this year. Why? Because we have the same players and that means no dominant defensive ends to cause havoc and give others a chance to make big plays. No amount of coaching or scheming is going to correct this deficiency. To win the game we are going to need to break the UGA receiving record for 1,000 yard seasons by a factor of 2. Also, Knowshon and our outstanding, young offensive line will need to have a good day too. This will work as long as special teams doesn’t give it away. Keep the kickoffs in the field of play….please! Go DAWGS!

I’d rather have a ring than be featured in the famous AJC Kiss-Up-To-Your-Dawgs series which showed the country the individual players on the most underachieving team in football history. If CMR wanted to do the right thing he would have refused to play in any bowl. Lets hope that Stafford, Moreno, CMR, Martinez and all the other UGA cupcakes are there again next year. I’LL probably get a 45-42 tatoo. Why ? Because we want the win more than UGA does. Losing to UGA causes disease.

wreckmaniac: You said it right. You are a disease!! Have fun with your whistle ring. Refuse to play in a bowl? Dude, we are still in a New years day bowl! You beat us once out of eight years and you call us “cupcakes”? You need to get a clue. Don’t get use to beating UGA.

Some of you tech people are clueless. Now if you win a couple in a row, and you won’t, I can see the cockiness. UGA is featured more in the AJC because we have been ranked every year and winning 10+ games every year since 2000. You guys can’t even win your league championship and you want respect? PLEEEAASE. Beating an average team in Georgia will not get you respect. Appear in BCS Bowl game then run your mouth. Until then keep watching UGA get more coverage.

Deal with it! Go Dawgs!

I just love the story on Caleb King and how he was never coached to block UNTIL AFTER THE FLORIDA GAME, when he missed a block on Brandon Spikes on a CRUCIAL THIRD DOWN ON THE 16 YARD LINE OF A SCORELESS GAME! To me, that is one of the most telling stories of this season. Why would CMR put a guy in such a crucial situation when he doesn’t have the skills to execute? Tony Ball then taught him step-by-step how to block. Shouldn’t this have been done a lot earlier in the season? Maybe it’s just me, but Richt should quit being the CEO and start coaching again.

Dave, I am sure there are plenty more knowledgable folks in here about the guys in particular. In my mind the biggest Standout as DE will be if Battle can return healthy. He was supposed to be the next big deal, but hobbled all year. I actually thought guys like Houston, started to look a little better toward the the end of this season. Seems like we did get mroe pressure if not sacks. One step quicker, or 20% better technique, aughtto really help next year. Did Irving ever get much PT? Toby Jackson recruited last year and spent a year at Hargrave, could be something. Washington I hear a lot of folks mentioning.

But really the biggest help to the pass rush could be Owens back. He was usually dragging 2 guys with him, and that didnt always stop him. If you remember last year when we lead the SEC in sacks (with the same DC, imagine that) everyone credited him for freeing up DE’s. Now add a healthy Weston, and a much more experienced Atkins. I expect we are in great shape on the D line next year. Might help to get back the 6 LB that are out with injuries now too.

Chip- Well, well. Back so soon? Just kidding.

Everyone can ignore the anti-Richt and other coaches sentiments. We know that you and Embarrassed are putup jobs. Alt,you are up to your usual. Keep jabbing the jerks.

If I’m not mistaken articles have stated that we are still putting recently hurt players in the game because they are better than those that have been practicing. They have not practiced until Sat. Cheez!! It’s the end of the season all over again! We are not any better off than if this was the last scheduled game with players playing hurt and nothing has changed. Tell me I’m wrong. Please. My hopes are that something works for these kids. I’ll still be cheering them on, no matter what.

Have you fans noticed all the hubris cast toward players coming back and getting rid of coaches such that all the jerk posters ID themselves as not wanting their team to face us again? Like if everyone comes back, it looks as if FU and Teckie fans are worried. Wow! that admits a ton. I wasn’t going to get worked up early for next year, but some of you interlopers who have no pride and think it’s clever to “disguise” yourselves as Dawg fans to make negative comments may keep me going.

All Dawg fans are cheering for the return of our offense that didn’t achieve their capabilities fully this year and for our defense to come back with a hardon toward some of these comments and shove all you interlopers down the spiraling drain. How do you keep a*******hole interlopers in suspense? Tell all of you next year.

I have not blogged a Tech site because I wouldn’t be caught dead doing that, but there must be enough of you on here to say “Good Game”. Your O line blocking was impressive. Your play was inspired when compared to the previous 8 yrs and you deserve a pat on the back for this year’s game. I think you should encourage your players to get a commemorative ring. They won’t have long to wear it. Besides, when would they ever dare to wear it after this year? It will end up embarrassing for those players in years to come. Can’t you imagine the scenario recruiting as each player flashes their ring to celebrate the one year they won? “Come and play for Tech and you may win one of these in 4 yrs, but we have to be truthful and tell you it took 8 so if you can’t play past 5 yrs, our Tech Statistics Dept says you have a 5% chance of winning one!” And that’s plus or minus 3% at a 95% confidence level.

Don’t know about the 3 and outs, appearantly you do. Actually there are a variety of stats that tell the story, UGA has held up in most.I know that having 40 sacks is better than 18.

Conference play would be interesting to know. I assume you are hinting that maybe UGA loaded up on sacks during OOC games? But when looking at totals, didnt every other SEC team play OOC games and potentially pad thier stats during those? So SEC leader is still that.

Carleton Powell- I remember as well. The Thanksgiving Day Game should be reinstituted. Most of them were Freshman games(when frosh couldn’t play their first year), but several full team games were nationally televised. I was in another part of the country and explained to guests what a “Good old fashioned Hate” game was about. During that one game the announcers talked up the ferocity of this rivalry and had sound mikes on the sidelines with parabola shields to pick up sounds on the field. When the hitting started, you didn’t need any amplifier. The cracks were awesome and accentuated the ferocity of play. When a stretcher was used for the third time to remove injured players, my guests understood the rivalry was personal to the players. There was another game on with the Dawg/ Yellowjacket game those years- the Texas/OK game. It didn’t compare. Usually the UGA/GT game was for invitation to a select bowl or for a finish to a great season. Anyway, there were a lot of marbles on those games.

I’m past 68 and remember many games…and forget many as well. Your blog is well taken and I share your feelings about this rivalry. It used to be “the game” in the country and we need it back. The AJC carried entire pages of photos from those games with dotted lines demonstrating the path of the football on big pass plays. Why can’t we team up and get some memory games from Furman Bisher for this series? These young kids need to know that this was and still should remain a fierce rivalry. Glad that Tech is back with your new coach. Bet that you are glad also, you lower-than-whale-manure miserable piece of N Ave trade school insect!

I saw the great comment earlier, “What BSC Bowl did you win.” You have to win one(1st have to be in one) to get one.

Go Gators,

Yeah I think I even saw a few of the 6-4 250 lb linebacker’s teeth fly out when coach Hayes “punched him in the mouth”. LOL. Right through his face mask AND mouth piece. What video were you watching flimwad? Did the guy survive his corrective surgery? LOL.

Like I said, Coach Hayes had a very weak team that year and in his frustration, made a very poor decision. By the way, what Bowl did Florida play in that year? Pretty sure you a***** went 1-9 and the only bowl you went to down there was one you bought a ticket to!!

There was no footage of Coach Hayes being arrested at the airport the next day because he was NOT arrested at the airport the next day. But his termination, was the appropriate thing for our AD to do, in my opinion (unfortunately).

Amazing what a split second instinctive decision can cost you. Ask Al Campanis, Jimmy the Greek, Dixie Chicks and Tiger Wood’s caddie.

Coach Hayes crossed the line and I am not defending him for it, just saying that I’ve seen a lot worse on the practice fields during my playing days where no camera’s were present. A whole lot worse.

By the way, we must have just missed each other on your return from Canada. I left you a present, did you see it?
