UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Catching history: two 1,000-yard receivers?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After focusing on final exams the past few days, Georgia’s football players now turn their focus to Michigan State. They’ll practice each day through Saturday, twice on Thursday, before dispersing for the Christmas break. On Dec. 26, they’ll reconvene in Orlando, site of the Jan. 1 Capital One Bowl against the Spartans.
Granted, it’s not the bowl game the Bulldogs and their fans envisioned at season’s start. It’s not in Miami, not in the BCS, not for the national title.
Georgia’s rallying cry for the game seems to be that it’s a chance to win a 10th game. Actually, that goes for both teams, which have 9-3 records in common. But the game has a few more compelling storylines than that.
It matches two of the three or so best running backs in college football, first-team AP All-American Javon Ringer of Michigan State vs. second-team AP All-American Knowshon Moreno of Georgia.
It offers this Georgia defense, which you’ll recall allowed 409 yards rushing against Georgia Tech, one last chance to stop the run. Or not.
It might, of course, be the Georgia finales for Matthew Stafford and Moreno, both considering the NFL draft.
Then there’s this: Both A.J. Green and Mohamed Massaquoi enter the game within range of 1,000-yard receiving seasons. Green is 49 yards short and Massaquoi 90 yards short. Georgia has never had two 1,000-yard receivers in a single season. In fact, Georgia has had only one receiver in school history with a 1,000-yard season: Terrence Edwards in 2002 (1,004 yards). So Georgia could come out of this game with more 1,000-yard receivers this season than in the past 115 years combined.
Anything else intrigue you about this game?

I read where Georgia was using walk on players to substitute for Ringer and the MSU offense. How about using Moreno and the first team offense going full speed contact against the Defense every practice. Lord knows the Defense could use the work!

That would be nice to see those guys get that 1,000 yrd season. They both played hard this year. MoMass will be missed. That kid has really matured during his tenure at UGA. Of course Stafford had to get the ball there. Hope Moreno and Stafford are back but if they aren’t I might get over to Ford field and catch Stafford playing. IMO they both need that one more year so that they can make an immediate impact in the NFL. I think if they go early they won’t get the playing time that they could with one more year. They could walk into the NFL and start if they stayed next year.
BTW, if they are going to start doing face transplants Cleveland is a great place to start.

Jeff!! Wake up man!! Knowsho needs to toughen up! $100 says he never takes a snap in the NFL. The kid is soft, our lackluster coaching staff have made it that way. Stafford has the arm and the ability to make things work at the next level but Moreno, whatever. The kid ran on and off the field like he was the OC, surely the NFL scouts took notice. Stafford has a bright future ahead but Moreno had better hope he can scam as much as possible from this last year of huge signing bonuses or come back and spend at least two years maturing into a man.

Michigan State has the perfect game-plan to beat CWM.
Run the same 2 or 3 plays the entire game. Just hand the ball to Ringer. Don’t even bother with the forward pass. This will completely bamboozle CWM who will contemplate adjustments but upon realizing that he has absolutely no talent on D (his words not mine), he will decide against it.
The net result: MSU compiles over 400 yards rushing, winning the game by 3.
CWM supporters will cite the offense as the problem noting that Stafford only threw for 5 TDs and really let the defense down.

I disagree with Mr Truth about Knwoshon. Everything I’ve read leads me to believe that he works his butt off. Even NFL backs have to come out once in a while, especially after a big run. I think Knowshon is the best back in the country, and hopefully the game against MSU will prove it. He has had to run against tough defenses with an inexperienced offensive line all year, and he still had a great one. I would love to see him come back, and I believe that he and Stafford both would benefit from another year (provided they don’t get injured), but I think both will have good NFL careers. If anything, I think Knowshon will have a better career than Stafford. The man is just hard to bring down! If he gets a good offensive line to block for him, watch out!

The absolute banal stupidity of those questioning Knowshon’s toughness never ceases to amaze. These people are as dumb as a box of rocks. I’m no raging homer either. I think the guy could use another year at the college level, but it has absolutely nothing to do with his lack of toughness. You might as well say “I didn’t watch Knowshon play a down of football this entire season” if you think that. The guy takes on tacklers like a linebacker and has never missed a single minute of playing time due to injury. He gives 110% every second he is on the field. Soft? Please grow a brain. Good grief.

I’ve seen every Knowshon game live and in person. Anybody that says he is soft is STUPID. After this bowl please refrain from writing about Georgia football until spring practice and then again until August. I love Georgia football but we don’t need to know everytime a player clips his toenails in the offseason. Last offseason was overkill.

Jeff Patton @ 9:56 AM - Exactly! The D needs all the reps with the 1st team O they can get. I think Ringer will easily rack up 150-200 yards. CWM won’t put 7+ in the box until the end of the 4th qtr. :-S
WTF??? @ 10:22 AM - I know Brannan’s been injured (initially), but it’s a shame how little they’ve used him (& Chapas) this season. Southerland led the team in TDs+scoring a couple seasons ago. The guy is a tremendous athlete (squats 750, runs a 4.6 40y/d). They’ve under-utilized Durham as well. Kris is the biggest WR (with the 2nd best hands) on the squad. The reason MM has the huge #s, is he gets 10x the passes thrown to him (than does Durham). MM’s a better blocker, but Durham’s hands are just as good (plus he’s 6’5…and needs to add some mass in the off-season). I look for Durham to be the solid #2 WR next season.

I agree with many of these posts except for the NFL comments regarding Moreno. I have been field level with this guy during a few games and I have never seen a quicker more exposive player. Some of the moves he made in the Tech game were amazing. He will be a good NFL back.
As far as Stafford. The main reason he may not go pro is the probablility of being drafted by Lions. Look what happened to so many high draft choices who had their careers ruined there. You may get your paycheck but you will never play in a playoff game nor a super bowl for that matter. Maybe soft Willie can take over as head coach for the Lions next year!

News from the North. MSU and Ringer are talking about how important this game is for them. MSU has only a couple of 10 win seasons in its history and they are very motivated to make this one. Dantonio is one coach that fires his team up. Ringer is looking to have a big game as this will be his last one at MSU.

Mark my words. Saban will re-build the Lions starting with Stafford as his first pick. Saban wants to win a Super Bowl. He primarily got smoked by the Ricky show in Miami. As GM and HC in the Motor City he will have total control over the situation. He has the receivers and the running backs. Too bad Stafford didn’t play baseball, he could have chicken shat his way out of it aka Elway. Or if he had been a Whanning his dad could cry his way to a different team.

Apparently you forgot what it means to “keep it real” because to say Stafford never showed up in the big game is ignorant at best and moronic at worst. Stafford has been outstanding in big games with an OT win at Alabama, kicking UF’s hiney, beating LSU and the list goes on and on. Put the ball on the 5 yard line with a minute and 20 seconds to go and there isn’t another QB in America I’d rather have than Matt Stafford. The number of 90+ yard drives he’s engineered in his career is amazing.
Get a clue!

“Keep it real”, Stafford has had a great career, winning a number of big games, i.e., at Auburn in 2006 as big underdogs, Florida and Alabama in 2007. I don’t know why you say he can’t read defenses. Have you noticed how most teams’ offenses stand up, turn around and look to the sideline for audibles? Not Georgia with Stafford making them at the line.
Matt is a great talent and has represented the University of Georgia with honor. I hope he stays another year, but if he goes, I wish him the best.

“He really seems laid back and is a great Christian man. He didn’t seem to be pressing any of the players there.”
That is a quote from recruit Branden Smith describing CMR. “He didn’t seem to be pressing any of the players there.” Could that be one of his problems?

Flyin’ Dawg that’s an easy one too. I thought you fleabags could come up with better questions, guess not. Anyways, the answer.
45-42= one victory
51-7 = one victory.
My memory is short-term. Although, I seemed to remember the greatest margin of victory in the series is 48, held by GT, but 51-7 is only 44. Hmmm, what is the relevance?
Maybe it has something to do with a Chan Gailey who is no longer coach at GT…I’ve almost got him blackedout of my memory. He’s so yesterday!!!
Here’s my question, it’s not hard either.

Knowshown will be a great pro. The blocking for him hasn’t been as good this year. He could have had a much better year statistically and honestly, he took himself out way to often given that the guys behind him aren’t on the same level by a mile… but I think this year was vastly less impressive than last kind of like Steve Slaton’s last year at West Virginia and he’s tearing it up now.
They are both ready, I hope they get paid a ton and I hope Knowshon turns into the poor mans Adrian Peterson.

Mr. Alphabet Soup: Branden Smith is the #1 recruit in Ga. That news may get to Kalamazooville any day now. And the operative words are “players” and “pressing”, not recruits. AltamahaDawg - I don’t have a definitive answer to your question but I believe Owens will be back for the following two reasons: 1) Coach Garner’s recent in home discussion with Owens’ family about the NFL not being likely to take a risk on a lineman, who hasn’t played a down over the last year, during the first rounds; Owens would be an early round lock after another year at UGA & 2) Owens’ mom really wanted to see her son graduate and walk her son out onto the field on senior day; Though he decided to join the senior day festivities w/ his cohorts, I seem to remember hearing that the senior walk was cancelled due to the weather. Am I wrong about this? What do y’all think?
Off the subject here for a second – It seems that much has been made about what this team or that team is getting from their respective bowl game in payouts. However, is it not the case that the conferences (at least the SEC) split the sum total evenly between all of the programs? I thought this was another one of the reasons Notre Dame never joins the Big 10 (err 11). Maybe I’m wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Evidently you haven’t watched the same Matt Stafford i’ve been watching. He’s made some throws the past two seasons that most NFL qb’s don’t make. He has the best arm strength from 20 to 40 yards of anyone in the country and that is what has the NFL excited as to whether or not he decides to join them. Didn’t show up in big games? Seems to me you didn’t show up for the big games or you would have seen some of his completions and how well he plays his position. Just trying to keep it real for you.

You are correct, SEC splits bowl money with all SEC teams, Capital one bowl payout is $4.25 million to UGA, time they add that with BCS game, Sugar Bowl money, Chikin Biscuit Bowl money and all the rest of the SEC bowl games, each SEC team should end up with a million or more. Think that’s why SEC is always strongest conference. Won 7 out of 10 Bowl games in 2007 best winning percentage since bowl games were formed.

The devil came over to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal. He was in a bind ‘cuz he was way behind: he was willin’ to make a deal. When he came across this young man playin’ on a field and playin’ it hot. And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: “Boy let me tell you what: “I bet you didn’t know it, but I was a DB player too. “And if you’d care to take a dare, I’ll make a bet with you. “Now you play a pretty good DB, boy, but give the devil his due: “I bet a scholarship of gold against your soul, ‘cos I think I’m better than you.” The boy said: “My name’s Branden and it might be a sin, “But I’ll take your bet, your gonna regret, ‘cos I’m the best that’s ever been.”

Cuz,
That’s the most dissapointing aspect of the season. Not the losses, but how they lost. They self destructed in the three most important games of the season—1st half against Bammer, 2nd half against the Gators, and the 3rd quarter against Tech. The talent is there. The team is young. Those self destructing parts of the game is probably more on the coaches than the players though. I’m not on the “fire the entire coaching staff” bandwagon though. The coaches are human beings, hopefully they’ll learn from their mistakes and make sure they don’t happen again. Regardless, i’m a Dog fan and can’t wait until the bowl game, and next season.

A.J. Green will have a better NFL career than Matthew Stafford.
Matthew Stafford is an enigma. That is to say, he is a mystery; a riddle; a puzzle.
He has started out slowly in every game, never really seeming to be prepared out of the gate to have great football games for us. His concentration seems to be on calling the plays at the line of scrimmage, and invariably they are all passing plays he wants to call. Frequently, when he is not calling a passing play, blessed with some of the top running backs in football who could have carried the football for us that play, he calls his own number to run the football.
Fumbles have been a problem. Stafford leads the team with 5 fumbles again this year so far. He does not seem to carry the football properly when you watch him run the football. We all remember with horror how Mohamed Massaquoi on successive plays, fumbled the football twice in a row and how Richard Samuel also lost two fumbles including the horrid one against Georgia Tech on our pitiful kick-off returns. It all starts with the quarterback valuing the football. He is the leader on the field, the field general, sets the stage and leads by example. In 12 games so far, he has fumbled the football 5 times. That is not good and leads the team this year again.
Last season, Stafford only fumbled the football 3 times all season long, losing 1. That is good. 5 this season is bad.
And, the season before last, Stafford had 10 fumbles losing 6 of them.
What do we have ?
18 fumbles in 3 seasons, by far the worst on the team and by the way, not very good. Technique. And, stubbornness to hold on to the football. Stafford has neither. I would not exactly say that Matthew Stafford has gotten better at not fumbling the football, not with 18 in his first 3 seasons. In the NFL, players in that league will capitalize on Stafford calling his own number at the line of scrimmage for a running play, or pulling the ball down and taking off with it when he has been blessed at UGA with running backs such as Knowshon Moreno, Thomas Brown, Brannan Southerland, Danny Ware, Kregg Lumpkin, Caleb King, Shaun Chapas and Fred Munzenmaier.
By ............................................BuLLdawg
December 18, 2008 3:00 AM | Link to this
I do not buy in on this calling his own number 135 times in 38 games to-date with 18 fumbles. 13 percent of Matthew Stafford’s carries at UGA have been fumbles, yet he is and has been blessed with 8 running backs in his tenure here who are NFL running backs.
Far better able to carry the football than he.
Mike Bobo, for his part has stated repeatedly in Stafford’s career, that he absolutely does not value the football.
Me ?
I do not believe that Stafford sees 18 fumbles on 135 carries as 13 percent fumbles. If he did, I believe that he would have worked on this by now. And, I don’t think he sees him running the football 4 times and Knowshon only 17 times against Tech as a problem either.
And, note again with 8 named NFL running backs who could have carried the football had he called their number at the line of scrimmage instead of his own.
I’d say, that is the number 1 issue with Stafford. Decision making at the line of scrimmage.
Georgia Tech, for example, Stafford only called Knowshon Moreno’s number to rush the football 17 times. Unforgivable. He called Caleb King on the only play he got into the game after a long Moreno run taking a blow, and yet Matthew Stafford called his own damn number 4 times against Georgia Tech. B.S.
If you want to know why we lost the last game to Tech, there you have it.
This fact alone is why on the Official UGA WebPages under Individual Game-by-Game Summaries every single season, that UGA shows you exactly how many fumbles every single player ever to play for UGA had.
It’s damn important.
And, of course, when Matthew Stafford is not calling his own number at the line of scrimmage to run the football four (4) times against Georgia Tech while giving it to Knowshon Moreno 2nd Team AP All-America only 17 times, he throws the football.

This leads us to his obvious poor showing in Touchdowns to Interceptions.
48 touchdowns to 32 interceptions.
Folks.
That is God Awful.
Technique. Stubbornness to not turn the football over. Decision-making at the line of scrimmage and preparedness for the game to get off to a good start. I’m sorry but Matthew Stafford is the worst Quarterback we’ve ever had at any of this over the last dozen football seasons, because as I see it, he fails to make good decisions, does not properly prepare, and can not follow directions by his coaches in proper footwork and follow through.
32 and counting interceptions to only 48 touchdown passes is an Astoundingly unpleasant two-thirds of the time he has thrown a touchdown, he has thrown interceptions.
Revolting.
Beastly.
Dreadful.
Hideous.
Appalling.
Terrible.
Unspeakable.
13 percent of the time Stafford runs the football, he fumbles and 66 percent of the time he throws touchdowns, he throws interceptions.
Detroit might take him. We will be better off when he is gone. We were never able to make this point to him. I certainly could have made the point to him, couldn’t I have ?
13 percent of the time Stafford runs the football, he fumbles and 66 percent of the time he throws touchdowns, he throws interceptions – the worst by far of all quarterbacks UGA has had since 1997. If you are going to run the football, hand the damn football off to one of the 8 NFL running backs and if you are going to pass the football, don’t try to force the ball in there or overthrow it. I would rate Matthew Stafford as a project, the same as he was when he came here 38 games ago. He has much to work on. Project. He has not won any of the awards, and has not even been considered to be one of the top quarterbacks, and if he is taken in the Top 50 picks in the draft up-coming, it will be on potential the same as he came to UGA with. If you want me to say he’s been a disappointment, OK.

Mark Richt’s comments to Aaron Murray concerning the possibility of never having the chance to win a big championship is disturbing. In my opinion this goes to the “lack of fire” attiude that Richt has shown all season. I just think he could have chosen a more positve motivational recommendation for Murray, such as “Get after it for your chance at this championship, it may provide excellent experience to draw from when you are here at UGA playing towards the SEC championship”. I know that all we can do is wait and hope that Richt and Company get things turned back around for Georgia, and that being said what coach Richt has said in past years about what needs to be done to fix certain areas of our team has proven to be true most of the time, and they have been able to improve in the problem areas in the past. I agree that we will be fine without Stafford. There is a lot to be said for all the momentum changes his interceptions have created. Momentum is HUGE in the biggest of games, the Alabama, and Florida games are not the only games UGA will play that determine the possibility of playing for championships. There will be many to come and I just hope we have not lost our edge, or at least our ability to see and fix the biggest problem areas of the team. I really hope Richt sees the importance of keeping Searels at all costs. I really don’t think Garner is going anywhere, but who knows? Hopefully Owens and Moreno return, but like the story said, Joe Cox is very capable, and I would be willing to bet that he knows the importance of protecting the football.

Good points Columbus Dawg! The only thing I can add about the offense is I thought we didn’t sweep Moreno enough. Our line wasn’t the best to run up the middle, but Moreno seemed to get 20+ yards when we sweept the ball to the side. We sweept the ball one time against Tech for a touchdown and didn’t run it again. Dooley would have sweept it left and right till they shut it down. Anyway I guess you can’t complain when we were putting points on the board. Now the defense….I can’t post cuss words here and can you beleive Martinez got a $ 32,000 bonus for this year???????????

Kendawg- I wouldn’t bet on Stafford staying. Think for a minute. Whos is first to pick in the draft this year? The Lions right? Who will be first to pick in the draft next year? That’s right. The Lions! So why would he stay knowing he only costs himself money. The cap starts in ‘10….AND….he still goes to the same team.
Now, I think Stafford is a great qb so what would be the reasons for him staying?
Win an NC? you got Urban Myer, Nick Saban, Tim Tebow all coming back next year also. That would be tough but not unrealistic.
Does he want a Heisman? Again, tough but not realistic.
He just plain loves football or Bulldog football? Don’t know.
I feel there are not enough strong reasons to stay that out weigh the ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR!!
But, it’s just a feelin..it will pass.

As long a Willie Martinez remains DC, we will need all the 1,000 yard rushers we can get. With Willie Martinez as DC, we will need a minimum of 500 yds offense per game to have a legitimate shot at the National Championship.

These tech comments are so funny. You just have to acknowledge the little guys wearing there new bright colored clothing. Who knows…maybe by 2015 they will be able to get 60,000 people to come view a game in that little low populated city they reside. What a joke! Their legacy lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No worries Jeff. If you’ve lived in the south long enough, nothing should really surprise us right? But that was just darn funny. Cheers!

MARK MY WORDS.
Stafford wil be a bust in the NFL. Moreno will be a solid back in the NFL.
Dawgs won’t miss a beat on offense if both go. Offense will be fine. Defense-another story.

RAMBLE ON?
So the only thing that matters is a win? Well since I’m sure you’re a math wizard you can figure out that the only statistic that really means anything is 55-38-5. That’s the historical Georgia winning record against Tech, even including the disputed games in the 40’s. Forget how many in a row, how big a margin, based on your statement that a win is the only thing that matters, YOU ARE A LOSER.

I can’t believe Richt called another practice. I don’t get it. I have been positive through thick and thin. (I was a staunch advocate during the Goff years, for Christ sake.) But, man, I just don’t get this cancelling practice crap. It’s always, “They worked real hard so we skipped conditioning…” Soft, soft, soft, soft, soft. I seriously thought the dogs would kick their butts. Now I am not so sure. Think I’ll sit around and chat about going pro or not. Bench all those slack asses. What a bunch of prima donnas. I am sure that MSU will not be calling any practices. And, Dear Willie, maybe during this time off from practice you should search Wikipedia for “how to defense the run in football.”
