UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Keep trying - the blog article is still a disaster. Please at least get all of the permanent captains up. MoMass was overall, but you had others for offense, defense, and ST. The Vince Dooley award went to Stafford. Are you going to list everything (i.e. irondawgs, all SEC, academics, etc.) or just stay with the biggest awards? I think Irondawg awards tell us a lot about the future stars.

“laughingstock” is one word. Also, you’re an idiot.
Anyway… some odd choices for newcomers, Tyson’s playing time was really limited, and he never did anything of note that I saw. All Gray did was signal for fair catches, and where is Ben Jones?

Thanks for getting the article fixed. I really hope some real UGA fans jump on this blog today. Mostly, we have jerks on here so far that are pathetic excuses for individuals. The season had some big disappointments, but their were several great individual efforts honored Sat. night, and they deserved to be. There were also several academic honors that these kids should be proud of. It was a great night for the players and their families to enjoy, and several recruits were also there to see an impressive event. There was also a lot of talk about the bowl game, and it seems that the players have a good attitude going in, so hopefully they will be as prepared as they were for last year’s Sugar Bowl.
Congrats to the seniors & other winners and Go Dawgs!

Bet the defensive players were psyched to get those awards after hearing CWM repeatedly blame them for the colossal underachievement that is the 2008 season.
How many times did CMR and CWM try to deflect much deserved criticism by telling us that the players just couldn’t execute their brilliant schemes?
Once coaches start blaming players (and getting away with it), it’s all downhill. You can tell what the players think of that a$$-clown Martinez by the indifferent way that they play (how else do you explain the record breaking scoring binge in points-allowed?).
It will take years to recover from this debacle and even then, with Willie The Coward (what else do you call someone who blames kids for their failures) and CMR as his enabler, we will forever be looking up at the programs of our rivals.
Really what kid in his right mind would want to play for an incompetent coward like Martinez.
No worries though-Richt is completely satisfied with what happened this year (no changes planned!!).
Even better, a good portion of our mediocrity-embracing fan base is prepared to gobble up several more seasons of this slop. They’ve adopted all of CWM’s excuses, telling us that: 1) expectations were too high (clearly high expectations are always unwarranted for a program like UGA), 2) injuries were soooo bad (can anyone please list the 19 players lost to season-ending injuries? Oh well, I guess injuries only happen at UGA), 3) our schedule was the toughest in the country (turns out to be a comparatively easy schedule. Of course we lost badly to every ranked team we played. (Richt though seemed pretty pumped about the KY and Vandy wins – which shows how high the coaches set the bar at UGA). 4) our players were no good. (highly debatable. The only thing for sure is that the coaches do not improve the player’s abilities once they arrive at UGA.
Hand out all the awards you want for 2008. By celebrating failure you simply invite more of the same.

Reading this from a recent WM interview, it sure sounds like he is taking some responsibility to me….
The biggest problem, Martinez said, is the defense’s propensity toward giving up so many big plays, and that he blames on poor execution — blown assignments, missed tackles, etc. He’s not exactly laying all the blame for that at the players’ feet though.
“It’s part of your philosophy that you can’t do, and I think leadership has a lot to do with it,” Martinez said. “I mean that not just in the secondary, but defensively as a whole not allowing it to happen. And it starts with me. You have to feed that down to your players, and I take full responsibility for that. We’ve just got to get better. It’s an integrity part of defense that just can’t happen, and it’s got to be coming from me down to them. It just can’t happen.”
“The most disappointing thing is that, you take the three losses, but in particular the last one, and we played outstanding in the first half,” Martinez said. “You take the second half, and we played the complete opposite. It wasn’t that they did anything different, it was just executing, tackling. But it wasn’t the same intensity, it wasn’t the same focus, and again, that comes down on me, and we’ve got to do a better job. We’ve got to play 60 minutes, and we didn’t do that in big games.”
I’m not a blind loyalist and I also see merit in the arguments for WM’s removal. However, comments like those from “Master of the Obvious” are either made by a rival school fan trying to make UGA look bad or from someone who thinks UGA should handle its disappointments this season the way Auburn did - we all see how that is turning out. If you think it will take years to recover from “this debacle,” how long do you think it will take Auburn to recover from the “fire them first, figure it out later” mentality.

I know this is off the topic but I am dying for an explination. Below is what Auburn grad Charles Barkley said about Auburn’s new coach:
Barkley, the former Auburn and NBA star, told ESPN.com that his alma mater did not hire Buffalo’s Tuner Gill because of race. Gill is black and Chizik white.
“I think race was the No. 1 factor,” Barkley, who played basketball for three seasons at Auburn during the early 1980s, told ESPN.com. “You can say it’s not about race, but you can’t compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume.”
“I’m just very disappointed,” Barkley told ESPN.com.
Why the heck do blacks ALWAYS bring up race? There are more white people in this country then blacks, therefore, you will have more white coaches! Blacks are better athletes, whites are better coaches. Anytime a black guy gets fired, it’s racist. He does not get hired, it’s racist. The thugs are never satisifed!

NewnanDawgCF:
I like your perspective. I live on the west coast and usually attend 2-4 games a year (only ASU and GT this year) and try to keep up with dawg news but your CWM quotes on his acceptance of responsibility are the first comments along those lines that I’ve heard from CWM or from CMR either.
I think most fans realize you don’t win every game and contrary to the blogashpere, are pretty circumspect. These are college kids and of course, human beings and will make mistakes. Championships aren’t guaranteed in August and must be earned.
That said, this season though was significantly more disappointing than most. Several reasons for that:
1) The talent appeared to be there - Returning almost all starters from a young team that seemed to really mature in 2007. We finished #2, why wouldn’t we legitimately expect that we actually belong in the #1 conversation for a change.
2) The beatings were ugly. Many of the wins were ugly as well. The whole team contributed but the defense collapses were epic.
3) Coaching accountability – Our coaches didn’t seem to see the problem. Richt was constantly talking about the great wins when in truth, most felt that our program was at a higher level THIS YEAR than Auburn, UT, KY, ASU, USC and Vandy. It got to the point where they never acknowledged that they could’ve done more and then to end on the sour note that was the 2nd half of the Tech game, well, it just seemed to even the biggest dawg supporters I know that our coaches let a huge opportunity slip away this year. They didn’t seem to be forthcoming AT ALL about what needed to be done or how they are going to go about doing it. The lack of communication makes even the most reasonable supporter wonder if CMR felt that the on-field results were OK.
I am thrilled CMR is our coach and hope we never pull an Auburn. That said, we have one of the largest athletic endowments in the country. Georgia football is big business and like all of CFB, getting bigger. As such, CMR really does have accountability to the fans. He could be much more specific about how to fix what is wrong (from his in-season comments it didn’t seem like he felt that ANYTHING was wrong).
In 2008 we had more talent in key positions than we’ve ever had at UGA (and will not have next year). We also had some weak areas just as we will every year and every team has every year. For that reason and the fact that we cycle talent, 2008 is in the minds of most fans, “the one that got away”.
CMR as CEO of the dawgs should admit as much and not seem so defensive about CMR and the rest of the coaching staff. He needs to communicate more clearly what he feels is the “state of the Dawg Nation.” I think he’d find we are very supportive of him. Stonewalling and acting like it was a great season turns fans off and makes them have doubts about what is going on.

I was really disappointed that during the year after ugly losses Coach Richt sounded much more like a politician and less like a NCAA Champion caliber coach. For once, I would like to see him call someone out for lousy play as a player and a coach for lousy coaching. Loyality without gritty determination and passion to meet your goals is like a parent whose child brings home an “F” on their report card and the parent tells them, “better luck next time son”! Coach Richt, I believe that you can do much better. Show us alumni.

SoCal I also thought you expressed your concerns very well. Very refreshing change from the “doesnt have a clue” crap we get in here.
My only question is this, where do you factor in that this is the most injuried that CMR has ever had in one season. The expectation were as you point out high for a team that was #2 and returning most of the elements, but they didn’t return many key spots and a ton of supporting players. 19 guys missing is an entire program at a lot of schools.

You have got to love hearing Tech people say that UGA fans are a “wait til next year” crowd. I’m proud of UGA, and all that they have accomplished. The players did all they could, they did their best, the coaches did too! They are going to a big New Years Bowl, albeit not a BCS bowl.
Tech is going to the Chick Fil A bowl. They are playing number 5 in the SEC. So Tech boys, you need to get your slide rule off of your belt and “do the math”.
UF is the cream of the conference this year. They beat everyone they should have and lost one game due to a missed extra point. Everyone knew that Zook left the cupboard loaded for Urban Mayer, and he has done a good job too!
So for all of you wannabe teams, we have been good in the past, good now, and good in the future. It looks as though you just want us to either bring in a failed NFL coach, like UT, or a failed Big 12 coach, like Auburn. As far as next year, bring it on, UGA will take you on.
If there are any UGA people really saying these things, check out the record. Check out our coach, and his staff, and what appears to be his ethics, and spritualism. We may not have the most points, but we are never losers.

Great post SoCal Dawg and I agree entirely that the lack of accountability and admitting there is a problem is the most frustrating of all.
mike…get a life! If it is ‘just a game’ which is the favorite saying of the loser, why are we paying soooo much money to these coaches? Oh, I remember; it is so “our brand” will be known nationawide. Puke!
Denver, I am also proud of my school, UGA, but am extremely disappointed in this year and the coach’s remarks afterward. I don’t want anyone but CMR directing us now and certainly am not advocating firing him (why can’t someone express their opinion or differing view without someone accusing them of being a disloyal fan or wanting to fire the head coach?).
And I also don’t buy the BS about all the injuries. Sure we had our share, certainly, but it’s part of football and we were supposed to be so deep. Or have you forgotten?
Show me ONE game, just ONE where the preseason #1 did not struggle this year. We were embarassingly beaten twice, totally embarassed in the 2nd half by our rival, and in retrospect did not beat anyone in Phoenix.
As long as we are ‘thankful to be 9-3’, guess what we are likely to be (hint: 9-3 or worse). Of course you will say many teams would like to be 9-3, but the Vandys, Miss Sts, Michigans, etc, etc, etc did not begin the season #1.
As long as we are ‘thrilled’ to be going to the Citrus Bowl and be playing an excellent Michigan State team, guess where we are likely to be!
Do you get the point? I want someone accountable to show a little emotion and say SOMETHING is going to change!
I love my university and my team. I went to every game this year except KY. I support them with my money and my time. But I’m sorry, I do have a life and I wouldn’t go to Orlando if I had nothing else to do. Hope you make a good showing which I think is critical for ‘09, but I don’t even want to hear about next year until I see some results on the field.

Hey Go Dawgs,
We didn’t really impress anyone this year. We did struggle, the only way we can pull back up is from the bootstraps. We will see in this bowl game and then they will go from there. I am disappointed too! However, I am not ready to jump off of a cliff over it. The kids did the best they could, and if that is not good enough, then in the spring, maybe an attitude will change. There were not many seniors on this team. Maybe with a few more next year, we can see some more leadership and will move closer to a championship bowl. You have a right to be mad, and you are doing well expressing it. My question is, when do we draw the line? Is it talent on the field or coaches on the sideline?
Let’s just hope we show a decent crowd in Orlando, and pull it off!

“deep” is being able to substitute. Deep is not losing a major part of the team.
Name one school in the nation that could have lost 19 significant players and still had the year they were picked to have prior to that.
More precisely to your point: where do you think we would have been ranked preseason if the voters had known we would have been without our best O-lineman (and his next 2 replacements), best D lineman, top tackler from last year, senior FB, senior TE, (and his next 2 replacements), several more linemen on both side , a slew of special teams player, a key reserve DB, several reserve LB, freshman PK nursing a hammy, and a half dozen more random players? Do you think anyone would have voted this team to the preseason #1 knowing that?
Yes injuries ARE a part of the game, that’s the whole point. It is, and it affect the outcome, like other parts of the game do.

Mark Schlabach, who is the antithisis of a UGA apologized said it best “show me a team in the nation that could be going for thier 10th win on New Years Day after losing 3 starting left tackles”.
Nobody is “thrilled” to lose 3 games. None of us are “losers” to realize that sometimes things dont always turn out exactly the way you want.

Let’s name the 19 significant players and how much time they lost and how much they contributed while they were in there.
Trinton was significant, so was Owens. We played our worst after Southerland was back (certainly not his fault but a fact). Every time someone got a bruise it was counted as a significant injury. We knew some of the ones you will name were out back in the spring.
Other teams with lesser expectations had just as many injuries and seemed to overcome them and roll on. I think it is a poor excuse. Yes everyone said how “deep” we were and that was a reason we couldn’t fail.

“thankful to be 9-3”; “thrilled to be playing in the Capital One Bowl”.
Just ONE game without a struggle. As some have pointed out, we played some very mediocre teams as well as some great ones.

What teams had as many injuries?
19 season ending injuries, not bruises. The names are widely available. We had 2 last year. 19 this year. Alabama lost 3 starts total this year. Starts, not players.
I am still interested to know where you think we would have been rated preseason if those injuries were known about in advance? The only one I think the voters knew about was Southerland out for the first part of the year.

The closest team I have read about with anything around that many injuries was Auburn.

19 names and how much they missed. Let’s name them and their time, because its not widely available to me. After I hear them perhaps I also will be thankful to be 9-3.
I am thankful to be 9-3 after the way we played, especially against USC, AU, and KY, but that is NOT what CMR meant and not in that context.

“The bottom line is the coaches have to put the player in position to make plays and the player has got to make the play once that happens,” Richt said. “We are a team and we are not going to point fingers in the media. We always go back and look at things that we’ve got to do, whether it’s a coaching decision or a player-execution situation; that’s just how we handle it.”
Richt said. “We’re going to get better, and we’re going to do a better job next year, I can promise you that.”
“We’re just going to start at the top and go to the bottom on just everything that we do and really critique it,” Richt said. “We just have to be real open and honest in our evaluation of ourselves and do what it takes to get better.”
I’m just not seeing this lack of accountability as much as some of you.

Since when does a 9-3 record make you a laughing stock? Interesting. Must be a Tech nerd; poor things don’t know how to deal with a winning season!

Let’s see, GA and the nerds have the SAME record… and two of GA’s losses were to the #1 and #4 teams in the country… Tech’s losses were to.. well, not #1 and #4! Yet, to hear the geeks talk you’d think they were undefeated and going to nat’l championship. They didn’t even make it to the ACC championship game, much less a BCS bowl!!!! And, they beat a very average UGA team by only three points! I know you’re not used to having a winning season like Georgia fans are. I guess that’s why GA fans are disappointed this year and Tech fans are so happy! I would be too if I was 9-3 in the “mighty” ACC. What a joke! hahahahahahahahaha

Let Stafford go to the NFL. I’ll take Cox as QB. Maritnez is getting alot of heat and Bobo is getting none. How many times did the offense kill a drive by throwing a 30 plus yard bomb to MoMass that hit maybe 20% of the time?
Also why does UGA need to have 2 Elite 11QBs signed this year in addition to the highly recruited QBs in the program? Richt has never kept an OL to protect them. Look at Bama a great OL with a decent QB can go to the SEC title game.

Hey BB and BR…you can try to make fun of Tech all you want and denigrate their record, but the fact is they came into Sanford Stadium as big underdogs and won. They were down 16 at halftime, had primarily freshman and sophomores, a new coach and a new system. We were pre-season no. 1 with a coach and system that have been here for 7 years. We had two weeks to prepare for them, after seeing them do the same thing to Miami.
We have no room to make fun of Tech this year after what happened that long Saturday afternoon. No matter what we say, they will answer “45 - 42”. We should tip our hats and resolve to return the favor next year.
Tech does not have the same caliber of talent and athletes that we do. However, they now have a coach who expects to win and instills discipline in his players.
If I had to choose between the two, I would prefer less quality athletes who play together and are disciplined.

Read the frornt page of the Sunday early edition. Tech ranks #1 nationally in GPA ‘s amounf football and basketball players. That’s really incredible with the classes all students must take; like two terms on Calculus. Wonder where UGAg ranks? Our academics brinks us quality athletes and students. We don;t get many 5 star players. They go to school where a third grader could pass; schools like UGag.
Do they offer a degree in Criminal Athlete law over there? I hope you lose the capital offesne bowl.
