UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

The fabulous freshman

Hello, Georgia fans.

First-time poster, long-time editor Doug Roberson here.

The SEC coaches’ All-Freshmen team will come out later today and wide receiver A.J. Green should be on it.

Green has arguably had one of the most dominating freshmen seasons in Georgia history. He led the conference with 951 yards receiving on 55 receptions. He added eight touchdowns. He also seemed to be a fairly capable blocker. All this got me to thinking on the long, wet drive in this morning, if you were to compose an All-Freshmen, All-Time Georgia set of offensive skill players, who would be on it?

Here’s a crack: WR: Andre Hastings WR: A.J. Green QB: David Greene RB: Herschel Walker ATH: Charley Trippi*

Or would you go with: WR: Mohamed Massaquoi WR: Terrence Edwards QB: Eric Zeier RB: Garrison Hearst ATH: Champ Bailey

*Freshmen weren’t allowed to play

I don’t understand how AJ Green makes the ALL-SEC first team and Julio Jones doesn’t, but Julio Jones is voted SEC freshmen of the year. That makes about as much sense as a BCS poll. They are both great though.

Herschel Walker. Oh, and AJ Green can catch a BB in the dark. Julio Jones, too. Barring injuries, Julio and AJ are going to be household names for a long time (AJ & JJ, baby).

I want Erk Russell as defensive coordinator also (I assume we do the defensive team all-time freshman blog tomorrow).

I’m definately on the Zeier wagon. Had he been able to concentrate just on playing, as opposed to coaching also (I like Goff on the radio now, but he was useless then) he might have won a Nat’l Cham. his freshman year. The 2 losses were purely getting outcoached. Herschel should be a consensus - no doubt. The receivers are a little tougher - def. A.J., but then there are several. I might have to go with Mo Mass, b/c I think he and Green will also have the most success at the next level. But, what could guys like Hastings done with the quarterbacks and offenses we run today? Hmmmmmmm….

Whatever, they were all awesome! Go Dawgs!

…read the paper more than once a week you would know that the AP named AJ to the first team All-SEC team and then named Julio Freshman of the Year (but not first team All SEC). The next day the SEC coaches named both of them to the All-SEC first team, and then the coaches named AJ the Freshman of the Year.

I think it is very difficult to separate AJ and Julio based upon this season. So, the separation will come as they progress, even though both will have shortened college careers. As a receiver I think AJ will continue to be as good, or better, than Julio but Julio does other things. Regardless, they are both exceptional athletes.

I can only dream what Eric Zeir could have accomplished playing for one of Dooley or Richt’s more talented teams. He had his moments as a pro, too, despite being undersized. The guy had a ton of talent and guts to match.

The bowl game will be fun if for no other reason than watching the stat column. Knowshon could top 1,500 with a big day. Green and MoMass are each closing in on 1,000 yards. In a bit of a longshot, Stafford could top 3,500 with another 300 yard passing day. Laying the disappointing season aside, these are very impressive numbers. Of course we could lay a big fat egg and embarass ourselves too. I’m prepared for anything.

Green and Jones are both excellent athletes. I think Green has more upside because he is so slender. As Green gains muscle mass he will be able to get off the line better and will able to fight dbs for posistion. Why omit defensive players and the O linemen? Sturdivant made himself a real force last year, and Renee Curran, need I say more?

By doug roberson

Yall are right that Greene was a redshirt freshman, also. My bad on that one.

The SEC team came out and the Bulldogs had six players make the list, including DeAngelo Tyson and Blair Walsh.

Not to say neither were deserving, but their stats didn’t really pop, either. Tyson had less than 10 tackles this season, and Walsh seemed to be better at hitting uprights, rather than splitting them.

AJ Green, Most exciting to watch play than we’ve had in several years. This freshman can really go after the ball, Jones is good also but, paired with Stafford jones may have been just as good on stats, never know. is it true Doug that UGA never even looked at J Jones?

Here’s an SEC nightmare. Bowl Armageddon, the end of the world.

Bowl Season opens with the greatest Rose Bowl in history. USC and PSU play a classic. The winner kicks a field goal to go ahead with less than a minute remaining 38-35. On the kickoff the opponent drives to just outside field goal range. The game ends with an incomplete pass into the end zone when the receiver is ruled out of bounds. Final AP ranking #1, #2, Final BCS ranking #2, #3

Utah stuns Alabama in the Sugar Bowl winning 17-3. Bama is #8 in the final rankings.

Ohio State takes the Texas Longhorn to the woodshed beating them 28-14 in the Fiesta Bowl. Ohio State finishes #4 in the BCS, and #3 in the AP

In the BSC championship Oklahoma upsets Florida in what many call the worst Bowl game ever viewed. 14-6. Florida is scoreless until 11:09 in the 4th when they score a touchdown missing the extra point. Florida finishes the season ranked #5

Tebow promises nobody in the NFL will play harder than he does to make up for the terrible way he played in his final game.

The AP splits the National Championship awarding it to…………….

I just watched the 2007 UGA vs. UF game on youtube, where the team rushed the field and let the Gators know they were in for a long day, and all I could think to myself was ” Man that was so badass”. Then I watched the 2008 UGA vs. UF games, where be Dawgs went out there and quit and it p** me off. This team is so gutless. I can care less how many awards they “win” because they haven’t done anything this year. And they will lose their bowl game to Michigan State because they are soft and they don’t care. Thank God I have the Falcons to root for.

You got any employees left ?

I guess it doesn’t say :

COVERING DIXIE, LIKE THE DEW anymore ?

Seriously, Doug, sir : We just finished the worst regular season in UGA history. We beat no one who was a ranked team. In the only 3 games against teams who are ranked, we had runs of 26, 31 and 49-3 against us.

And, you come running in here rah rah rah, we have 1 good player.

Get some perspective Doug.

We just lost to Georgia Tech for the 1st time in 18 years. (The NCAA ruled that GT played 11 ineligible football players including All-ACC players at RB and QB against UGA in the 3 “wins” 2 of which instant replay would have given UGA the victory anyway.)

We have 11 and counting arrested and suspended again as has happened EVERY YEAR IN THE COACH RICHT ERA.

We Lost to Florida in Jacksonville, again in the Coach Richt Era.

I don’t think any of us are up for rah rah rah after what we are put through because if we had started out Number 17 in the AP and Coaches’, we would not be ranked today for the 1st time in 12 years.

Some of these awards are really a joke. I wonder if these people have any clue about football or the players they are voting for to win? Clearly AJ Green and Ben Jones deserve a ton of credit and freshman awards - GREAT JOB GUYS! However…Blair Walsh are you kidding me? Yes his first couple of games were very good and from that point on he was horrible which made his total stats for the year TERRIBLE! All SEC honers for Moreno, Stafford, Green, and Curren also well deserved…but 2nd team honors for Reshad Jones…are you serious? Reshad Jones should be on the second team alright…second team defense for Jacksonville St! It really waters down the significance of these awards when they become popularity contest instead of a true evaluation of on the field performance.

6 SEC all Freshmen may seem impressive, till you realize the SEC is the 4th or 5th best conference in football.

*……………………………………..BuLLdawg *

Is such a douche bag…using your own standards, UGAg has never won a National Championship. Thank you Jan Kemp for proving/exposing the cheating involved in the Dooley years with the developmental studies sham.

We at GT will acknowledge your wins since the NCAA allows them, unlike moron…………………bulldawg. I’ve noticed you blog all night long, so I’m guessing you’re probably the 3rd shift security guard [not allowed to carry a gun of course] at the Wal-Mart or Target.

Alpharetta Dawg - Blair Walsh was the only Freshman kicker to play significantly, so therefore he is the default winner. As for Reshad, he played pretty well for most of the year, including having the 3rd most interceptions of safeties as well as being in the top 20 of tackles (and the top 5 for safeties). Just because he had a bad game against Tech, or somehow didn’t live up to your “standards” doesn’t mean he isn’t deserving for the season as a whole.
