UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Fun, funky fall comes to close
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m here today to say “so long.” Not goodbye, mind you, just “see ya later.”
Like, much later.
I have a lot of vacation time and other off time accrued that I need to get in before the end of the year. So I won’t be cranking out a couple of stories and a blog a day like I have been pretty much since early August. In fact, I won’t be doing much at all until after Christmas. But don’t fret (as if you were). Tim Tucker, who is still on vacation this week but will be back next week, will keep the blog going for you. Our capable editor Doug Roberson will also be filling in occasionally as I understand it.
And, of course, I’m sure I will be checking in from time-to-time, if not daily. I’ll just be like the rest of you, an interested and critical observer ready to rip those guys if they come forth with a weak topic (like this one). Besides, you can’t be responsible for something like this every day for four months and all of the sudden have nothing to do with it. I may have to call Dave O’Brien and ask him how he handles it. He must suffer withdrawals when he takes some time off, if he ever does. As always, e-mail me story tips and suggestions directly or share them here. I always appreciate your feedback.
Anyway, it has been a real interesting fall to say the least. It started with all the talk that Georgia may be preseason No. 1 — I caught hell for saying it may be Florida instead — and of course will end with the Dogs needing to beat Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl to not drop out of the Top 25. For the record, I don’t think the Bulldogs were severely overrated or severe underachievers. I just think they had some really bad luck and played very poorly in three games. Nineteen season-ending injuries (that includes Darryl Gamble’s, which was essentially just the last two games) is a lot for the even the greatest of teams to absorb. Georgia’s still pretty doggone good.
If I had to guess I’d say Knowshon Moreno’s outta here and Matthew Stafford’s 50-50 but that won’t come down ‘til after the bowl. It’d be a pleasant surprise if both or even one came back because I do believe they could set some all-time marks with that line and A.J. Green next season. But I don’t know that coming back for that or certainly “the good of good ol’ U” is much of a motivation anymore.
I don’t think Auburn will hire Rodney Garner but somebody eventually will. I think Dennis Felton’s basketball Dogs will have 10 wins by the New Year but I’m not sure they will have 20 at the end of the regular season. I think I’m tired and a little burned out but will be totally re-energized in short order and ready provide you the best Georgia coverage I can upon my return.
Until then, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Festivus (I should be back for Kwanzaa, God willing). I’ll leave you with some links:
Because I didn’t have much time between the end of Georgia’s football practice and the beginning of the basketball game Tuesday night I wasn’t able to write a bunch on the football Dogs. I’d normally put it in the next day’s report but I won’t have one. But David Hale wrote pretty much everything that came up in his Bulldogs Blog… .
Did you catch the mini-march some Auburn students made in support of former coach Tommy Tuberville? You can read accounts HERE and HERE… .
Seems like the city of Nashville is not real thrilled with the Music City Bowl deciding to pick Vanderbilt as one of its participants. Not exactly the economic boost the hotel and entertainment industry was hoping for

So now there’s talk of us dropping out of the top 25 if we lose the bowl game? That’s funny, because when Florida dropped its bowl game last year to go 9-4, they still finished in the AP Top 15. And they, like Georgia, had started the preseason ranked in the top 5. If somebody could explain this absolutely BLATANT double standard for me I would be much obliged.
The disparity in treatement between 2008 UGA and 2007 Florida by the media is perplexing to say the least. Maybe you can write a story on the Chip.

Thanks for your hard work and even-handed style. While I may not share some of your opinions about the Dawgs, I appreciate your ability to be candid but without regularly accentuating the negative when covering UGA football. This is a welcome change from some of your predecessors on the UGA beat(especially football). As a fellow UGA grad who once aspired to be a sports writer. You and I actually went to Georgia about the same time in the late 80s and I have followed your career since my days as a contributor to the sports desk at the Red & Black around the time you were the editor there (I mainly covered intramural sports and put the ‘BS’ in BCS long before the current set up in college football as I personally conjured up the R&B’s rankings of teams in flag football, basketball and softball, but I digress). I actually appreciate that you are not a ‘homer’ journalist and that you are willing to call it like you see it, both bad and good, without a lot of hype and hyperbole. Today for instance, I greatly concur with your assessment of the Dawgs in you blog. The Dawgs, as Michigan State is going to realize, are “pretty doggone good” and are set up to remain that way for the foreseeable future, espeically with remarkable players (and student athleats)like Arron Murray (another ‘Superman’)and Chris Burnette (dominating guard with valedictorian-level smarts) ready to soon make their marks Between the Hedges. Thanks again, Chip, and have a great holiday (and rest).

Missya already Chip! Have a “Merry Christmas” and Joyous Holiday Season.
Altamaha, the expectations were high, probably to high. Injuries were a MAJOR factor, there’s no doubt. I was attempting a little humor there as well as handing you a complement on your overall knowledge last night. I do however honestly believe that had Meyer and Saban been given the same circumstances the team they put on the field would have given a better account of themselves in the Bama and UF game. My “opinion” for that statement is I believe they are more intense on the mental approach and somewhat tougher on the positive discipline, and fundamentals of the game. I believe the the styles Meyer and Saban have lend themselves more to the college game with Richt’s more “laid back” style fitting the professional game. That’s not saying Richt can’t be successful, he has been, he just has to be careful with what kind of personality’s he surrounds himself with.
Overall Richt has done a pretty good job through his 8 years. My biggest and only credible problem with Richt and his, or his staff’s approach have been the letdowns we’ve seen at times the last few years. He absolutely gets a bye on all the issues this year and has my support.

I understood the compliment and appreciated it.
Debatable if they would have only lost a few games but not as “bad”, with all those injuries. I can point to ONE play in each of those games that if it bounced the other way, I truly beleive the entire Rame would have been better, maybe not won it. But if how Bad we lost is the issue, that was really a lot more simple to change than a major coaching philosophical change. Alabama and FL lost a Bunch of game last year with way less injuries than we have had, so I am not sure how that translates to they would have looked any better with as many.
I have also heard several folks who visit Athens during the offseason state that Richt’s laid back persona on camera is in no way a reflection of what goes on behind the scenes.
It might also be argued that Richt’s calmness was a major factor in actually winning a few games this year, that lesser, more frustrated teams could have easily lost?
All pure speculation at this point.

Most likely when all things are taken into consideration, the ball just didn’t bounce our way this year Alt. A play here yes, a penalty there definitely. Were some of the penalties we got tagged with really pay back for last year as we heard all year? Does someone with knowledge of how officials minds work know? I would really hate to think so.
Richt doesn’t need to change his style, wouldn’t work for him anyway.

Yeah, Special K definitely needs another year of college ball because the nearly 1,500 yards that he’ll gain this year isn’t nearly impressive enough. The NFL scouts want at least 2,000 before they even consider you a 3rd rounder. He needs to come back and “toughen up”. Nevermind the fact that he has never missed a single game due to injury in his entire collegiate career, a rare feat for a workhorse running back. His a big fat sissy girlyman. Another year of virtually imposing his will on inferior college players is what he needs. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Good grief.

Always mix outside to reduce the risk of fire and remember to wear your rubber gauntlets. Cuz, Alt, Hunk, Zeb, Samoan, and all you regulars, Merry Christmas guys! Merry Chreistmas …..BuLLdawg, yeah I know “bah, humbug”! Now about CMR, I hope he stays around for a long time. If UGA continues to average 10 wins a year a national title will come. He cannot and should not change his personality. Richt will nver be a Bear Bryant type, and I don’t think the modern athlete will take the abuse that Bear and Wally Butts handed out. Huh? Huh?, you didn’t really address the issue. Chip said Georgia would drop all the way from #16 in the AP poll to out of the top 25 all together if it looses its bowl game. That’s a whopping 10 spot drop in the polls my friend. Yet, when Florida dropped its bowl game in ‘07 it only fell 4 spots in the AP poll. And ‘07 Michigan is arguably a weaker opponent than 2008 Michigan State. Then to add insult to injury, the all knowing media voters voted them above a team that beat them during the season, Auburn, despite an identical record. What kind of sense does that make Mr. Huh? Huh?
I do not make a habit of whining about polls. I do make a habit of whining about pure unadulterated MEDIA BIAS, and that is exactly what this is. There is no other explanation for it. Do not waste your time pretending otherwise.
Georgia has been dragged through the mud this year like they are a bunch of worthless deadbeats and I am fed up with it. They are no worse than the media darling ‘07 Gators that failed to live up to the hype. Nobody was questioning the heart and character of that team or calling for coaches to get fired, eventhough it was clearly a soft team both mentally and physically. Florida bounced back in a big way and it would be foolish of anyone to dismiss Georgia’s chances of doing the same. Good day sir!!!

General, we haven’t formally met, well now we have. I have a couple of questions concerning your solvent. Does it remove duct tape residue without harming the trailer finish? If caught during use can it still be consumed? If so how do I get it? Some extended family members down here in Bama need some and it would make a mighty fine Christmas present. Some of them Awbarn folks had already duct taped 7 on their trailers.

well see, that’s an excellent point Mobile. Richt has to have what works for him. So all the folks saying he needs to do or that, may as well be saying he needs to move on.
On the penalties, nah, no payback. For all the hype about where we placed in penalties this year, nobody seemed to talk about that about half the top teams in the polls were right there with us minus a handful. Actually I looked it up once and its not like we were way ahead of last year in term of number of penalties. Yardage was. I remember a lot of roughing the passer and defensive holding calls that are killers at 15 yrd. I would bet on film that was s direct result of our lack of a consistant pass rush.
Looking at the season, I do NOT believe there was any lack of heart or desire. there. Now “confidence”, I really do think crept into the equation. I’m sure it was becoming very obvious to the players, coaches, and evidenced in practises, how so many injuries were limiting them. Come game time I dont think they truly believed they could just line it up and do what they wanted. I dont think they gave up “wanting” to be a better team, just stuck with the realities. That ain’t a problem with Heart. That’s a problem with limbs.

Merry Christmas Chip. Not the season we all wanted. Kick in the crotch with the loss to Tech, now we have to start all over on the 8 win streak. IMO I think it would be best that both Moreno and Stafford come back. I think that they would have a much better chance of possibly starting or seeing a lot more playing time their rookie years. Comparing them to Steve Slaton and Matt Ryan and their big rookie seasons. Slaton played 3 and Ryan the full 4 years. Of course if Stafford goes then Nick Saban will make him his first pick for his rebuild job in Detroit.
Yeah, I wonder how we get treated next year in regards to all the penalties? I am sure a lot of those are legit but then some not so legit. I think Urban’s two timeouts pretty much cleared our slate for next year.
Please beat MSU.

Isn’t it slightly suspicious that we were not only dead last in getting our own penalties, but we were also dead last in drawing penalties on the other team. I can’t believe that with our high flying passing game and an elusive running back like Moreno that we didn’t draw more penalties on opposing defenses. I don’t know. Something smells mighty fishy to me.

Moreno is gone. I think if Stafford were from Georgia he would be back. He has to look at (among other things) Moreno leaving and wondering if UGA does not have a good running game next year then opposing defenses will tee off on the quarterback.

What’s interesting about the penalties is that while we’re like 116th, Florida is 90th. That’s still pretty high for a team that did so well this year. They’re second in the SEC right behind us in penalties and it doesn’t seem to have affected them much, if at all. You don’t see anyone calling them undisciplined or lazy for all their penalties because they’ve been able to make up for them in other areas. Also, our biggiest penalties seemed to come at the worst times…like on defense during a third down stop or something. Not saying it’s not something that doesn’t need to be addressed, but it’s just interesting how they hurt one team so badly and another team hardly felt the effects of them.

And UF was right at the top (bottom) during 07. LSU same thing last year’s NC run. All the top BigXIII team are in the 100th place or so.
I also wondered about the dead last in drawing penalties. I get that we were 12th in the doing, but its not like nobody else ever did.. Obviously there is a 11th place, 10th place, …So they committed penalties too, just not in our game. That is very odd, not from a conspiracy standpoint but would be interesting to hear the theories on that.

Alabama sales rank high, especially with the season both the Red Elephants had and the season Auburn had. Guess it just depended on the mood thing. Answers to your questions :
1) If constucted prior to 1984, do not use. Won’t eat off only the tape residue but will use the residue as a catalyst to continue pecking away on the sheetmetal top coat. Hard to stop the destruction at this point.
2) Yes. Unused Dixie Cups, but please don’t take to time to savor the bouquet. Drink quickly. Dispose of the Dixie Cups per the Hazardous Waste Removal instuctions on the quart jar.
3) For delivery, listen and look for the early model red Chevy Cheyenne with a white campertop passing through your town, usually after midnight…driver answers to ‘Red’…

An encouraging development: Marc Weiszer - Onlineathens blog Defensive line coach Rodney Garner said he wants to visit with Jeff Owens’ parents in South Florida when he’s down there to recruit. Owens, who had a season-ending knee injury in the opener, is weighing whether to enter the draft or return for his final season of eligibility. “Here’s a guy who has the potential to be drafted a lot higher than he will if he comes out right now,” Garner said. “He won’t be able to go to the combine and won’t be able to do any Pro Days. Can I talk about the bowl games, in the UGA Football Blog here, or do I have to have your permission to talk about the news of the day, when the “author” of this blog (UGA Basketball reporter) asks us inane questions such as **should UGA call Rodney Garner “Coach in waiting” like Booby Bowden has done to Jumbo Fisher ?
Obviously, the situation is quite different here.
Coach Richt supposedly is going no where.
He is not about to retire either, like Texas’ Mack Brown and Booby Bowden, etc.
AJ-C “sports-writers” then with nothing else to write about when there were 34 bowl games announced the day before and no where in the AJ-C is there anything about how many teams for each conference, what the lines are, nothing.
AJ-C “sports-writers” then discuss making Rodney Garner “Coach in Waiting.”
And, I have to stay on that topic.

And, I believe the Big 10 is going 0-7.
6 of the ACC “bowl” games are weenie bowls prior to 7:30 December 31, while none of The SEC Bowl Games are.
The Big XII always loses its bowl games too, like the Big 10.
Why is this ?
The PAC-10 has only 5 bowl games.
Las Vegas has only crappy Iowa of the Big 10 winning their bowl game. Las Vegas says all the other 6 will lose.
The SEC gets $53 million bowl revenue this season and the ACC gets only $32 million.
The ACC has 3 more bowl games than The SEC ?
Excuse me haveyoukickedyourdawgtoday, that is what your problem is.

Tampa Tribune sports page if you want to check it out. I also noticed before the “comments section” that paper post the following disclaimers….. (I have noticed that the AJC does warn against inappropriate comments in its recuiting section, which were the absolute worst comments in the paper for some reason. Big man to beat up a kid I guess) Its a shame you would even have to point these things out.

Why is Michael Carvell(Recruiting Page)the only blog master on the AJC who sets reasonable standards for posters/posts. No objectionable “screen names” or inappropriate comments. There is no “freedom of speech” issues; just common decency and public protection from exposure to adolescent potty-mouths. Is he the only one with cajones? Apparently so.

Tech has some pretty good 4 star recruits too. Just checking on Scout.com, they have Josh Nesbitt, Jonathon Dwyer, Nick Claytor, Derrick Morgan, Michael Johnson, Darryl Richard, and Morgan Burnett all starting as former 4-star recruits. Every other starter is a 3-star recruit besides Vance Walker, who was a 2-star and really developed.
