UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Losing Garner would hurt Dogs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I don’t know how serious Auburn is about hiring Rodney Garner as its next head coach. Reports out of Alabama refer to him as a long shot. But I can tell you for certain Georgia is seriously concerned about losing him. And if I was involved with the Tigers’ coaching search he wouldn’t be a long shot.
First of all, this is not like 2005. If you recall, LSU coach Les Miles was about to fly Garner to Baton Rouge by private jet to offer him a job on his defensive staff, allegedly as defensive coordinator. But before Garner could get on that plane, Georgia coach Mark Richt canceled his plans to serve as honorary coach in the Hula Bowl in order to meet with Garner face to face. UGA President Michael Adams also called Garner from London to implore him to stay, as did AD Damon Evans from Vietnam. They offered Garner a hefty raise and added the title of assistant head coach to the ones he already had as recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach.
And Garner stayed. He also “owes me a trip to Hawaii,” Richt said.
That gives you some idea of what Garner means to the Bulldogs’ football program.
But this is different. This is Garner’s alma mater. This is to be a head coach in the SEC. Even if he could, Richt wouldn’t stand in Garner’s way for something like this. In fact, CMR has been very outspoken of his belief that Garner could be an exceptional head coach. And Richt knows better than anybody much Garner leaving would hurt.
Garner is like a string that runs through everything the Bulldogs do. He’s the first UGA voice most prospects hear and the first face they see. Great defensive linemen want to play for him because his guys always end up in the NFL. He came to Georgia from Tennessee and immediately got the Dogs’ recruiting foot into the door of downtown Atlanta high schools, where it’d rarely been. He’s organized. He’s smart. Knowshon Moreno liked him.
Yep, losing Garner would be a big blow for the Bulldogs. But there is one thing they could possibly do.
The latest trend in the college game is to designate a hot assistant coach as “head coach in waiting.” Will Muschamp received that title (and a $900,000 salary) after just one season as defensive coordinator at Texas because other schools wanted to hire him away as a head coach. Jimbo Fisher has the same deal at Florida State (he’s mentioned for Auburn’s opening as well). Oregon did it with Chip Kelly as well.
I don’t know, just a thought. What do y’all think?
Some links:
Here you can see all the stories on Auburn’s coaching search… .
Georgia had eight players named to the AP All-SEC team. You can see the list of all the players from all the teams here at the SEC website. By the way, the coaches’ team should be posted there today or tomorrow… .
Here’s some great news for the Bulldog Nation: Florida QB Tim Tebow says he’s “leaning toward coming back”… .
Speaking of quarterbacks coming back next season, this Texan said he definitely is… .
Apparently Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen has been interviewed for Mississippi State’s head job… .
Our old buddy Mark Schlabach, now of ESPN.com, rates the bowls from best to worst. Spoil alert: Dogs-MSU made his Top 10… .
Here’s a great look at how every coach voted in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. Spoiler alert: CMR voted Gators 1 but Urban Meyer voted Dogs 21st.

Talk about making a dissapointing year get more dissapointing??? That would be the cherry on top and then Moreno and Staff going pro early???? I think Garner has done a great job and for one I like the longevity of the staff. I even still like Bobo and Martinez. Stay at Georgia Rodney! Merry Christmas Bulldawg Nation!

I would be surprised if Auburn offered Coach Garner the job. Coach Tuberville was obviously forced out=fired. The shocking thing is that the attempt is being made to cover the thing up by the whole institution as if you could keep a thing like that secret. You have to think that Auburn had a good idea who it could get if TT were gone. You certainly can’t blame Coach Garner for aspiring. It’s hard to understand how AJ Green could be FIRST team All-SEC ahead of Julio but JJ is the Freshman of the Year. The fact that Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow are staying makes it financially more likely that Stafford is gone. Hopefully finances won’t be the ONLY factor.

Losing Garner would definitely hurt the program, but to name him coach in waiting is ridiculous. CMR will still be around for some time. If Auburn wants him, he is gone. Willie Martinez will be on the hot seat next year, and Garner could move into the D-Coordinator position should it become available if next season plays out like this one.

I have an idea…how about co-d coordinator! Martinez needs the help! Not sure how you can vote Green 1st team and not Freshman of the year. I guess being on CBS EVERY week has an impact. Green and Massaquoi could have easily both been 1st teamers with their years. How about Rashad Jones making the 2nd team? Not sure about that one either!

Let him go! We need a house cleaning anyway after this embarrassing season. Garner’s recruits haven’t panned out anyway except for getting arrested. Please take Willie too along with Fabris and Van Halanger. Richt needs to hire competent coaches or he will be singing his swan song too! You people who want longevity and mediocrity with this group of buffoons, well then get used to more of the same in wondering which UGA team will show up!

I think it time for Gardner to move on. We need a new Cordinator to come in and bring some fresh air to the program. Gardner is top notch and has been very important but the time is now for a new RC. Believe me, three yrs ago I panicked too but after watching Rivals, Scout you have to wonder WHY are SO many recruits not panning out? We need some FRESH AIR! We need some real attitude to come into the program!

Best of luck to Coach Garner. If I were coach Richt, I would add Sylvester Croom to my staff as the assistant head coach. Would like to see Stafford and Moreno return next year and Bobo run a triple option with Gray, Moreno, and King. Start looking to the mid-West to recruit some big old farm-boys for the line. We need to put it all together next year and really Finish the Drill.

what? make a good recruiter head coach in waiting? didn’t we try that with ray goff? the only people who had to wait were uga fans we waited 10 years for our program to get back on track.
whatever happens, happens. i say if he gets the auburn job that will be awesome for him and the SEC. UGA will live to fight another day.
just don’t knee jerk and jump on the latest fad just to keep a good recruiter who is really unproven as a coordinator/head coach.
p.s.- i know someone will mention it…but i would say the same thing about mike bobo - if they offered him the “HCIW” title. another unproven coach.
this hciw fad is a joke. another looks good feel good thing created by stupid, lazy baby boomers to “preserve their legacy.” go find a freakin coach. it will be interesting to see how many of these hciws actually end up staying at their institutions….i doubt many….

Garner leaving would put one big hole in the recruiting. Time to make him DC as somebody else will if we don’t. Fine if he goes to an HC position. Something he has earned and shoudl eb good at it. Not every recruit pans out but you don’t know that until it is too late. On the flip side of that most do. Couple of top notch guys like Moreno, AJ, MoMass etc and things are a lot better. That is the quality that Garner brings to the program.
Chip, what about the Miss State coaching search? I haven’t seen much about that one. Have they done anything yet?
By Joe M

Two things…
Garner isn’t going to be here forever. Someone is going to make a DC, if not a HC (I guess) at some point.
Does it really matter? UGA isn’t winning big games with all these recruits anyway. Sure, they’re winning, but not the big game. Unitl the overall approach to the way they play changes, it won’t matter how many great recruits Garner helps bring in…
Keep one thing in mind that no one is mentioning. The three years UGA has won the East both Florida and Tenn. were down. The two years they won the SEC Champ. was against an awful Arkansas team from and even worse West and a sub-par LSU team. The two BSC bowls they’ve won came against a down FSU team and a highly overrated and overmatched Hawaii.
Think about it, some of this great success has been a illte smoke and mirrors.

Joe M,
You could make the same argument this year for Florida about UGA and UT having “down” years. The fact is, in most instances the champion is the champion because they win one (sometimes two) big games. Just look at UF this year, they won the SEC and are in the national championship by beating Alabama, who played NOBODY this year. Remember, they also lost to Ole Miss.
By 407 Dawg
December 9, 2008 10:14 AM | Link to this
RE Dawg,
Your argument is valid but the 06 Florida team played at least 4 teams (LSU, Tenn, Aub, Ark) who won at least 9 games. As I recall that year LSU, Ark, and Auburn only lost 2 games each in the regular season. I don’t fully agree with Joe M. The 2002 GA team beat a lot of quality teams and was in my opinion the best team Richt has fielded. I guess it all comes in cycles.

The HCIW is just a way to keep any potential recruits coming your way. The HC says “well if I do retire then so and so is going to be here to carry on and I trust him to keep the tradition going”. It is a great thing for all the assistants that have HC potential to make more money under less pressure.

Garner is a fine recruiter, but is a poor line coach. He can get the talent to Athens, but cannot coach them up once they are there. Richt already has the next recruiting coord. on staff in coach Lily, so go out and hire a coach who can teach a lineman who to get off a block and sack the QB!

Hey guys. Did you like my cute little screen name as a typical bulldawg fan? I thought it was funny even though my comments have been used for a while. I’m really too dumb to think of anything original. What’s even funnier is that I’m too stupid to realize that these stereotypes are really off base. See ,what I do is just read parts of a few comments and jump to my own cocnclusion. Nevermind that my conclusion is predetermined. I’m really too ignorant to learn how wrong I really am. So when I can see examples to support my claim, I pretend that this is true of everyone. It makes me right in my own mind. I would never want to be proven wrong because my life is empty and the only thing I have is to hate Georgia. I don’t have a team I actually root for. I just wish the AJC would write about someone else. I’m too stupid to go read publications where there is a better market for other teams.

This HCIW anywhere is a poor idea. If another school offers Muschamp, Fisher, Joker Phillips a million plus yearly to be head coach NOW they are gone or either Brown, Bowden and Brooks are forced into immediate retirement. A sudden change in Prez or AD at those schools would wipe those plans out in a NY minute anyway. It just doesn’t make sense.

If UGA is so lame that losing an asst. coach would be its death knell, they’ve sunk farther than imagined. Remind me what this great Coach Garner has done? Georgia hasn’t won its division in 3 years, and is coming off a disappointing season. Perhaps a little staff shake-up would be good.
Secondly, coach-in-waiting for what? To take over the program when CMR retires in 2025?
If Coach Garner is such a hot shot then he should move to a higher level elsewhere.

Well … there’s a history of Auburn and Georgia selecting coaches with ties to the other school. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they did offer Garner. But even if it is his alma mater why in the world would anyone want to work for the idiots who run Auburn athletics these days. I’m not exactly an Auburn fan but Tubberville was a good coach and if they can dump him or force him to resign or however they’re defining it now after just one poor season, they’ll eat a lesser-name coach alive the moment he makes a mistake. Sometimes going home is NOT a good option. Like someone has already pointed out I think Auburn is trying to be PC so as to satisfy the BCA but not really interested in offering him. I hope Garner stays but I’m with JFKDawg … let’s get Willie an interview! Surely there’s some school out there who would be willing to take even a mediocre SEC DC as a head coach.

Matt, R. Jones lead the UGA team in tackles about half the games. Was right around the the top of the SEC in tackles outside of LBs, right there with eric Berry. Also had a team high 4 ints, (which would always rank you fairly high in the SEC), in his first year of being a full time starter. What were you expecting if that qualifies as a horrible disappointment. I think they use criteria outside of fan reaction to determine those All-SEC teams..

Thoughts from a Tech fan over here checking out the rival blog…first, I don’t think Auburn will hire Garner because they need a big-time, big-name guy to compete w/ all the big-name coaches in the SEC, in terms of media buzz and recruiting. 2nd, if Garner is SEC head-coach material, then he should be UGA’s DC, because Martinez had 2 weeks to prepare and still couldn’t stop Paul Johnson’s offense. Finally, good luck against Michigan State in the Cap 1 bowl and we’ll see you at the Bobby Dodd next November.

If what Tebow said is true, that Alabama was a close second as a recruit. And,that to play under Urban Meyers was his reason to pick Florida! What if Meyers chose Notre Dame at the time! Tebow would have gone to Alabama to play for Mike Shula, and Florida would have signed their back-up,Bobby Petrino!!Then Petrino would have jumped the Florida ship and not the Louisville ship to go to the Atlanta Falcons!!Yes fate smiles on the Florida Gators.

I agree with others that UGA should bring Pollack on board as a defensive coach…would be great for the program!!! Agree or disagree, it doesn’t matter. I merely pointed out facts. LSU was overrated in 05. 10 wins a year is very good, but it is not great. Great is playing for/winning a NC.
UGA may have had a chance in 02, but the typical loss to an inferior team (Fla. that year under Zook…ZOOK people) coast us.
Other than 02 UGA has not been close. Last year we didn’t deserve it because we couldn’t even win our freaking division!
Face it folks, Richt is good but not great. UGA is good but not great. We do not have a national power. We don’t, the approach is wrong.
It is what it is, and we all as GA fans need to realize what our program really is.
I’m not calling for richt’s job by any means, or Willie’s for that matter (#2 on D last year). This 08 defensive disaster is on the players number one, and coaches number two for not replacing said players.
The overall approach is wrong in order to be great. Bottom line.

DogByte, you hit the nail on the head, good job. My wife got tired of the penalties, coaching shortcomings and arguments, retarded play calling long before I did. I would like to believe that UGA could put better defensive and special teams players on the field than what we saw this year. AND, more disciplined players. Some plays looked like a high school game. What we are going to see in the high school playoffs will be FAR more disciplined, better coached, and fun to watch than what the dawgs have done this year. My guess is that Garner’s interview with Auburn is just window dressing. This would not be the sexy hire that AU needs to be on par with Alabama. But the dude gets the job done and will be a head coach one day and a good one. IF Auburn offers him the job he will take it, so there is no need to make him “head coach in waiting”. Plus it will be a long time before CMR leaves and a lot can happen in that span. He could get a nice raise out of all this.

It’s obvious that Turbeville was fired. Why would anybody pay him much more to resign than to coach next year if it were not forced. That would send a poor economic message and an incentive to coaches to just resign to gain more than if they worked.
We need some more defensive linemen. None of the ones we used throughout the season provided many sacks or pressures.

I agree BirdDawg. I can’t see that as keeping up with the Jones’. Either way, I see it a another degree of credibility even being considered. Not a bad thing for us if he was merely in the running, out recruiting for UGA with that new feather in his cap.

Can we all calm down! If I didn’t know any better, I would think that UGA went 3-9 this year. Don’t get me wrong, nobody was more heated than I was, after every lose this year. Especially the GT loss. Now that I got that out of the way….Losing Garner would hurt…Losing Martinez would help…Hiring Pollack would greatly help. As for next year…there appears to be 17 returning starters coming back, which would mean that this year’s team wasn’t that experienced. Could that be the reason for all the inconsistent play and penalties in 2008?

regarding CWM, I, for one, appreciate CMR’s loyalty to his staff and I remain confident that he knows best where and how to improve the program..certainly knows better than any of us do. However, after reading where Al Groh basically kicked his own son out of OC position at Virginia after end of season assessment, I can only hope that CMR assesses our situation with the same objectivity, and not blind loyalty. What a stupid idea! The guy is not even a proven coordinator and you want to make him HC in waiting just because someone else may interested. I agree RG is a very valuable member of the staff but no way he deserve HC in waiting just because Awbarn may interested. Make him DC because he cannot do worse than WM and if he proves himeself over a few years maybe. Again I hope he stays at UGA but not to the point of offering him something he has not earned. Good programs will lose assitants so that is part of the game. Developing coach depth is part CMR’s responsibility so we should be ready to respond if someone does leave…see Calloway to UAB and Coach Searles to UGA!

We had 42 sacks last year. Lead the SEC. We have averaged 37 a yr for the past 6 yrs.
We had 18 this year. Same scheme, same coaches. What in the world could be the difference? Because there are no other variables in college football.

AltaDawg, DE’s I think. How many sacks did they have this year?
HCIW not yet for our program. Give it a few (hopefully many) years before doing that. IMO in order to win the NC you have to start winning consistently and build the program. 10 wins a year is not a bad place to start. Richt knows how to win.

Zoo, I think the saying that the most obvious answer is usually the correct one comes to mind. DE’s had 6 of those I believe. When a LB or DB leads in sacks, you cannot wonder why we aren’t stopping anything.
BTW, I am not degrading our DE. Our most experienced one was banged up for much of the season , and I have said several times that I though a couple of the pups started to look better later. They were Oh so close to getting back there. Our Best DE in the past developed later in thier carreers. But we hit a gap this year in that position to be sure. Losing Owens who required double teams was a huge blow too.
I think I read where Urban also voted crying very highly ranked as well.

FIRE Martinez and name Gardner the D.C. if he’s really that good. He can’t do a worse job as D.C. than Martinez has. The DAWGS need to change there defensive scheme too. This soft, bend but don’t break defense is pathetic. We need someone that is agressive, and goes after the other team. Our defense has looked pathetic since Martinez took over.

First of all, I agree that earlier I was stating the obvious. But, I saw it; you saw it. Everyone saw it but the Tech backs who were down field getting ready to score. This is not a UGA type of defense. It is not a SEC caliber defense. It is not even up to B12 standards. Yes, we don’t have the talent that we have had on defense in the past. But, the fire, the discipline, the will-to-win appears to be missing as well. Some of that comes from the players themselves but much must be laid at the feet of the coaches. And the subject of this blog, Garner, is one of them. I hardly think that this year improved his resume.

Charliedawg: You can’t raise the bar and then be satisfied with similar results. Do you want UGA to be an elite program and compete for, and win, the NC? If so, you can’t be satisfied with a year, regardless of record, when you are smashed/beaten by your bitterest rivals. You can’t!

First off, let me just say I love Garner and hope he stays at Georgia for a very long time. I am not a fan of the “head coach in waiting” thing because I believe it really doesn’t help. Why would I want to name a head coach in waiting when I believe we have a darn good coach right now that I hope stays for a very, very, long time. Garner has done so much for Georgia and I hope he stays, but please lets not do this head coach in waiting thing.

Garner is a great recruiter. Being that Auburn already gives us a run for our money in the state, Garner to Auburn would significantly hurt our recruiting for a year or two.
As far as coaching, everybody on our defensive staff is absolutely terrible. Each and everyone of them would have long since been replaced had they been employed by Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Stoops, Paterno or any other top coach. The biggest, and maybe only, knock on CMR is that he has allowed this defense to bleed since the departure of BVG.
Florida got in Urban Meyer what we hoped to get in Richt. National Championship(s?) and a classy program. CMR needs to make the Georgia Football Team his PRIORITY and tell his roomate to hit the road - this ain’t a slumber party.

Rodney Garner took recruiting to a new level at UGA beginning in 1998. He’s coached pro-bowlers (Stroud & Seymour) and a slew of NFL players. He has 2 guys who will be starters in the NFL w/in the next 2 years in Atkins and Owens. The interior D line, which Garner is responsible for, has never been a problem as long as he’s been here. When your DE’s are not a threat, your interior linemen get double teamed to open running lanes in the middle of the line.
As far as talent, there is plenty on the defensive side of the ball. Adding Pollack as a “rah rah” coach would be a nice addition. Might even be good to get him in on some of the recruiting and train him to be the RCIW so he can take Garner’s role when he leaves for a new opportunity.
We don’t need a co-coordinator situation. Either demote Willie or keep him in his current role but don’t do the co-DC crap. With Coach Garner’s no-nonsense attitude, it would be interesting to see how he’d run the defense.
Coach Garner scares me everytime I see him around town. He’s a super nice guy but he’s all business. He commands the respect of his players. Go ask any of the D-linemen and see what they say about Coach Garner. He stays on them about grades and being a respectful young man in addition to their job on the field. Losing Rodney Garner would be bigger than most people realize. Coaches and players come and go but if Georgia has the opportunity to keep Garner around, they need to make it happen.
BTW, Georgia actually won a BBall game against a real opponent!!!! Nice physical play down the stretch by AJAX! Maybe we can get him to tryout for DE next year!!!!!

Mobile Dawg, ask yourself this:
Are we a better defense (whatever the coaching is) IF we do not lose Owens, Ellerbe, White, Washington, Banks, and at times a couple of other starters?
How many times did the offense stall at the worst possible times in those losses? Would less injuries have been that few more first downs or ability to grind out that 3 yds TD?
Would we have been watching the same UA/FL game IF those teams had 18 season ending injuries each? Tell me Nick Saban could have done any better if he lost that many players. How many close games did UA win with almost no injuries? I’m pretty sure everyone excused UF last year for losing 4 games due to injuries and inexperience.
Where would UGA have been ranked Preseason IF the voter would have known how many key players we would not have had? If they were to throw out: the best offensive and defensive lineman(and a few more behind them), senior TE, senior FB, last year leading tackler, and a bevy of full time special team players. Might not have even been preseason top 10. Seriously. I think that IS a very fair question to ask. Given 18 season ending injuries, what would have been a more reasonable preseason ranking? And what would we have predicted as a final record? Heck a lot of folks said 10-2 WITH all those guys.

What Conference will Win the Most of the Meaningful Bowl Games ?
SEC seven games ACC ten games Big XII seven games Pac-10 five games Big East six games Big Ten (11) seven games USA six games WAC five games Sun two games Independents Navy Notre Dame (might win 1)
Which Conference is going to do the Best in the Bowl Games ?
Bowl Challenge :
PAC-1 is supposed to go 4-1. Item one, the PAC-1 only has 5 bowl teams. Item two, the PAC-1 will have a Losing Bowl Record, not 4-1 according to Las Vegas lines. The PAC-1 will win 2 Bowl Games, however, that does not mean it is the PAC-2 because California beats a crappy-butt ugly Miami of Florida 7-5 team who Lost to the likes of for example 6-6 North Carolina State in their Last Game to make North Carolina State bowl eligible. Whoopee
ACC will Lose More Bowl Games than The SEC this season.
No good ACC team.
12-0 Boise State should have been awarded the ACC BCS Automatic Bowl Bid. Instead, they play in the $750,000 Poinsettia Bowl on December 23. That’s a Tuesday night. The ACC did not deserve their BCS Bowl Bid that belongs rightfully to Boise State.
TCU deserved the ACC BCS Automatic Bowl Bid too, as a matter of fact. Instead, Boise State plays TCU in a bowl ten days before New Year’s Day on a Tuesday. For $750,000 not $17 million. BS on the ACC.
ACC gets a team ranked worse in the Rankings than both the more deserving Boise State and TCU as your consolation booby prize for being in fact the worst Conference in America taking a BCS Bowl Automatic Bid, when you have no claim to one. Have fun playing a weaker opponent than the 2 far more deserving teams. This ORANGE BOWL no one will watch. This is the only “good” bowl the ACC has. Orange Bowl. Playing Cincinnati whose best win is over Pittsburgh, who Lost to the likes of Bowling Green and Rutgers.
ACC 10 “bowl” Games.
By ............................................BuLLdawg
December 10, 2008 4:30 AM | Link to this
$32.65 million for the 10 ACC “bowl” games. That is what the ACC gets for 10 crappy bowl games.
6 ACC bowl games prior to 7:30 December 31.
No one cares who wins any of those bowl games, nor the ones thereafter.
SEC $53.10 million for the SEC Big Bowl Games, every one will watch and everyone cares what happens in.
Zero Bowl Games for The SEC prior to 7:30 p.m. December 31.
SEC twice as much money and no 6 meaningless bowls prior to December 31 like the ACC.
WEENIE BOWLS.
In the games after December 31, the ACC is so strapped to find a real football team since there is not 1 among you, that you send the Climpson Farmers New Year’s Day to represent the ACC at 7-5 on New Year’s Day, and the ACC does not have any good teams in any of the other bowl games either.
So, don’t tell me how great the ACC is with 10 “bowl” bids. There is not 1 team in the entire ACC and you know it.
ACC went 23-11 this year against Bowl Subdivision Opponents (formerly known as the 1-A) while The SEC went 28-11. That’s because you played five (5) more games against the Championship Subdivision (formerly known as the 1-AA.) So, while the NCAA allowed you to play 5 more weenie games than The SEC did, teams like Auburn, Tennessee and Arkansas in The SEC did not make a bowl game by 1 game all 3 and 5 of your crappy teams did, as a direct result.
B.S.
Big Ten (11) (0).
The Big Ten (11) (Actually Zero).
Big 10 is supposed to 1-6 in bowl games, according to the lines and odds out of Las Vegas.
News Flash.
Las Vegas is wrong on a crappy unranked Iowa team beating Steve Spurrier South Carolina Gamecocks in the 11 a.m. Outback Bowl.
0-7.
Big 10 will go 0-7 in bowl games.

Let’s get to this biggest FLOP All-Time in Bowl Games, shall we ?
Big XII.
42-44 is the bowl record of the Big XII.
Losing Bowl Record of the Big XII. (Big 10 is 97-106-1.) SEC 184-147-9. ACC 79-78-2 all in crappy bowl games. Big East 37-32. PAC-1 105-93-5.
55 percent winning percentage of SEC in Bowl Games, is by far the best.
Big XII is 2nd worst, behind ONLY the exposed Big 10, 48 percent to 47 percent.
All year long, we hear about the great and wondrous Big XII.
Really ?
Here are the only Big XII teams said to be so great :
OKLAHOMA TOTAL DEFENSE NUMBER 65.
TEXAS TOTAL DEFENSE NUMBER 50.
TEXAS TECH TOTAL DEFENSE NUMBER 72.
OKLAHOMA STATE TOTAL DEFENSE NUMBER 86.
MISSOURI TOTAL DEFENSE NUMBER 99.
Can’t tell how good they are on Offense when there is not a team in the Big XII who has any clue what Defense is, now can you ?
These are the 5 “top” Big XII teams.
Mike Leach is the only coach who voted his team HIGHER than any body else in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
Thinks Texas Tech is Number 2 team in the nation.
Got news for Leach and Texas Tech and rest of Big XII telling us every year how great the Big XII is, then we watch as they FLOP in the bowl games against real defenses.
Ole Miss will beat Texas Tech.
BCS determines the CHUMPion of the Big XII.
Oklahoma, not Texas.
Look.
Oklahoma has been the Biggest FLOP in the HISTORY of College Football BCS.
By ............................................BuLLdawg
December 10, 2008 4:35 AM | Link to this
How many will they hang on Florida ?
34.
Florida will have 500 yards Total Offense against Oklahoma.
And, you know it.
OK, now you have my predictions for the bowl games.
ACC will have a worse winning percentage in their crappy no one cares “bowl” games almost all of which are before 7:30 on December 31. Weenie Bowls. The SEC will have a better winning percentage in games people actually care about and watch which is why we get twice as much money as the ACC for 3 fewer bowl games. What does that tell you ?
The Big XII will not have a better bowl record than The SEC either.
The Big 10 can officially quit football, now forever. Wait until their bowl record this season, becomes Front Page News.
And, the Big XII ?
Heard this all before every year.
Texas Tech coach, who used to be Hal Mumme’s offensive coach at Kentucky (Remember Mumme Ball ? Now, at New Mexico State WAC) over there ranking his own team Number 2 in the nation. Then, they FLOP against weak bowl opponents. Just like they do every year in the BCS. B.S. on the Big XII.
Imagine letting the BCS determine who your Conference Champion is. Whose bright idea is that ?
We all know the Big XII is all hype all year, every year. And, then what happens now that we have these BCS Bowl Games that ruin the match-ups for the top teams ? The Big XII loses.

BUT the good news is despite all those technical issue you bring up, he was still quite often the teams leader in tackles and as I point out…… as many tackles on the year as Eric Berry….and just a few behind Curran, who is an excellent tackler. Am I the only one who thinks that we aren’t going to be very good next year? It wouldn’t shock me if this team went 6-6 or 5-7 next season. In fact I’m kind of hoping for something like that to happen so this program will get the jolt it needs. The team needs to completely rebuild on the defensive side of the ball. Neither one of our coordinators are very good which doesn’t give me hope. I think UGA can good again, but it probably won’t be until 2011 or 2012. The next two seasons will be 6-6 and 7-5 at best.

The posed questions is good:
If UGA goes 9-3, 10-2, 7-5, or 6-6, does something need to be done? Will the system remain the same if we are just above mediocrity at 10-2 or 9-3? Is this really that different from 6-6 or 7-5 in our eyes? Do we want to remain a competitive 10-2 or 9-3 or do we want more? What will it take to make this happen?

This team was fooled into thinking that offense wins championships. The best players should have put on defense. The question for the future is can AJ play defensive end or safety ? Thats the thinking that will bring home the trophy. …..Bulldawg: Do you always have trouble staying on topic ? The blog is not about how the SEC will do in the bowls. Its about R Gardner.

It is rumored that Van Gorder didn’t get along with Garner. So if Garner leaves can we please get Van Gorder Back. Martinez can then carry Richts head set and be the “get back” coach!

I have to say that losing Garner would be a blow to our program. I think that is obvious. What I find more concerning is our head coach that seems to be campaigning for Garner to get the Auburn job. I think Richt should just keep his mouth shut on the subject at least in public. I’m finally getting past the Tech game and now this. Just an opinion, but I feel Coach Richt stepped away from the program more this past off season than he probably has ever before and it showed up during the season. After watching the SEC Championship game, I just don’t feel that he is as focused on football as those 2 coaches who met in that game. That is not to say he is not a good coach. However, there is little room for error in the SEC. Lets face it, with a few bad breaks, this team could have been 6-6 and could be worse than that next year if we lose some of our players to the NFL. Its time to focus on fundamentals and get better each week and the first test of that will be in Orlando. Another sloppy game or loss and I have to question Coach Richt’s judgement for the first time. Pray for our defense. See you in Orlando.
