UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Tough weekend for Atlanta Dogs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
By now Alabama and Florida fans are streaming into Atlanta. They’re coming in to witness what some are calling the greatest matchup ever in the SEC Championship Game — the No. 1-ranked and undefeated Crimson Tide versus No. 4 Florida and its offensive point-compiling machine. CBS’s Gary Danielson compared it to Ali vs. Frazier. Definitely should be a great one. I still can’t believe Bama is a 9.5-point underdog.
Anyway, it must be tough for Atlanta-based Bulldogs fans. They absolutely expected Georgia to be in this game. Already forced to watch Georgia Tech revel in its victory last weekend, now they have to watch the Tide and Gators party down in their fair city and waiting to get their tickets punched to Miami and some other BCS destination.
I asked coach Mark Richt, who lost to both teams, about the similarities between Alabama coach Nick Saban and Florida coach Urban Meyer.
“One similarity is they’ve both been in that game before,” he said. “Another one is their teams had seasons that they weren’t real thrilled about last year. Alabama was 7-6; Florida was 9-4. They probably used that to motivate and propel into this season. Both of them are outstanding coaches. Proven winners.”
Georgia, by the way, will be conducting a practice in Athens in the hours leading up to the SEC Championship. They should be through in time to watch it.
So who Bulldogs fans root for this weekend? Let’s hear it: “Roll Tide” or “Go Gators.” Regardless, who do you think will win.
Some links:
Speaking of Alabama and Florida fans in Atlanta, Birmingham’s Ian Rappaport blogs about what Bama fans should do while in town… .
Here’s an interesting column from UGA’s Loran Smith comparing the season Willie Martinez has endured to the Bulldogs’ former late, great defensive coordinator Erk Russell had in 1974… .
Don’t look now but Orlando columnist Mike Bianchi learns there is a chance Florida could win Saturday and not get into the BCS title game… .
Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran told Macon’s David Hale how hard it’s going to be for him to watch the SEC Championship Game. Hale also gets into more detail on the Dogs searching the JUCO ranks for players for next season… .
Here’s a good column from Birmingham’s Kevin Scarbinksy on Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville.

I’m still lamblasted by the loss to Tech. You score 42 pts. and you should be guaranteed to win.
And Tech fans screaming about the game should play into account. It’s the first win in 8 games for you. You won by three points. You gave up 42 pts. But…you did win the game and your offense looked like it was clicking, as did UGA’s offense. UGA gave up over 400 yds. on the ground. Tech gave up over 400 yards through the air. dawgs4ever,
agree on the stats from GT. I think we’ll see drastic improvement next year on D. If Willie is still here, he’s going to use our criticism and angst as motivation. Rennie, Geno, and hopefully Owens will be back. We need a huge and fast DE who can pass rush. We need another big playmaker.

Hey…I’m an Atlanta based Dawg and I didn’t expect my team to be in the game.I HOPED we would, but learned a long time ago there’s many factors involved, including luck, lack of injuries, etc. Besides, the schedule was daunting enough at the first of the year to be cautious about the prospects. I will “pull” for the Tide, but expect Fla to win by at least 2 TDs.Both teams had great years and it should be a good game.I also expect Fla to win the NC by teaching OK some things about defense.

Also, as bad as I hate to say it, at this point in the season Alabama is going to be taken to the woodshed. The only team that can keep up with Florida would be Oklahoma.38-14 gators.

dawgs4ever-No amount of points is a guaranteed win…ever. It’s football man. Win or lose that game was one fun game to watch. Jsut gotta tip your hat to the better team and move on. We got a real nice bowl game coming up. I’m making the trip! Not everyday you get to play Michigan State in Orlando FL. (If that is how it works but looks like it).
let the Tech fans have their fun. We’ve had ours for over half a decade. Richt and co. do a great job and will continue to.
Chip-I got 2 questions for you. #1. How about an update on the redshirt players from this season and who looks like will see the field and help out of that group in 2009. #2 We have taken a bit of a hit in, in state recruiting with Myles/Smith/Tate pretty much deciding against us. We have a nice classs but any of those guys would have helped alot. Your thoughts?

I don’t guess Moreno or Stafford have let anything leak concerning their draft intentions. BOTH need another year (or two) to improve, but maybe I’m just being selfish.
If Moreno leaves: Caleb King may be just another Jasper Sanks. Great hype, but King is too soft of a runner and hasn’t shown me any of the speed he’s supposed to have. Haven’t seen enough of Sanuels, but I’ve heard he’s the fastest back we have, as well as the biggest.
If Stafford leaves: Two inbound, top tier QB’s, Logan Grey or Joe Cox. Cox has the experience, so I give him the edge and he ain’t a bad choice either. He’s probably putting ideas in Staffords head like “Hey, I wish I could be making 8 million dollars a year next year…”
Looking forward to gameday tomorrow. Florida and OK roll easily, ACC game has all the interest of The Bobby and Whitney Show. USC/UCLA..hmmm…wonder who’ll win that one? Natl Championship between OK and FL should be one for the ages!

While I am overjoyed at the Tech win, I do have family members that were cheering for the dogs. I almost left the house after the first half as UGA looked unstoppable. But CPJ made great adjustments in the second half and blew the door off in the third quarter. Still UGA kept coming back and I was PRAYING that we didn’t have a 3 and out and give UGA a chance at pulling even…because I think they would have. Tech was much better coached and got more from their players, but it was by no means a blowout like many of my breathren would have you think. With the exception of the third quarter, no one could stop anyone. Great game and happy to finally be on the winning side.

This game is should be better than the BCS champion. Both teams are stout on both sides offense/defense. To me the difference will be Saban, and how he responds to the various schemes. Regarding the Jacket win in Athens and all of the comments made about the lack of defense on both sides, that is why you play the game. It does not matter what labled offense you run. The defense shoud adjust and make the plays to stop them. Yes, the Jackets have only won one of the last 8, and the series belongs to the dogs, but there is a new found respect/attitude on the Flats that has been missing for many years. For all of the Gailey years, you never knew which team would show up. With Johnson, you now know your team will hustle and not quit. The dogs had the opportunity to be in the SEC champ. It did not happen. We live, hopefully, to play another day. Thank God we live in America!!

The Glory days were over once Dooley retired. I knew it then and expected the results this year. I also knew that Mark Richt and staff would never be able to win a National Title. Way too soft and they do not have the fire and mindset needed. I applaud CMR for his spiritual beliefs, but it does and has interfered with coaching a college football team. It is more than disheartening to keep watching the Gators and other SEC schools continue to whip our @$#% and go on to glory in the National Championship games. We are on a decline and it will be a long, long time before we are able to even compete, much less win anything. Say goodbye to the recruits, and you can’t blame them for wanting to play on a winning team, not on a team with no guts, no desire, and no coaching staff who will drive them to succeed. I feel very bad for all Georgia fans who continue to endure the lofty expectations each year; and then must hide in shame after complete destruction at the hands of much better teams. It should be criminal, just as our team has become. Goodbye cruel world, we were once a power; now we fight for scraps.

Hey dawg fans…shut the hell up. Don’t you understand that our whining and b**in’ about that game and the season is exactly what the techies and the gaytors love to see? Yeah, we coulda and shoulda, but we didn’t. If you haven’t read the Loran Smith column linked above, you should. Mark Richt said the same thing following Saturday’s game - we curtailed the heavy hitting in the run-up to this season because of all the injuries and we paid the price. Back to basics and we’ll see who’s bragging this time next year.
One thing about the arrogance of the techies and the gaytors - there ain’t a damn one of ‘em that has the guts to say what they say here to any Bull Dog fan in person.

Wayne- you sound absolutely ridiculous. I only hope that you’re a tech fan trying to bring UGA fans down with your doom and gloom. We have a great program. Mark Richt is the 4th winningest active coach in NCAA football right now. I don’t think that means we’re “fighting for scraps.” Our recruiting class is still in the top 10 ahead of Florida’s. Don’t be so down on this team. You have some pretty lofty expectations. Bama went 7-5 last year. This is their first great year in a looong time. Florida went 9-4 last year and the dogs went 11-2 last year. Some years are up and some are down. Stop polluting this blog with nonsense.
I agree with Milton Jeff. I think we’ll see a drastic change on defense as well next year. We just need to get some more playmakers.

You know the thing is, SEC fans act as if college football is some sort of moral judgment from Gawd. For UGA’s sake, it’s a damn game! If you are good you will win. If not you will lose. It’s college football, not war. Lighten the hell up! We Tech fans are happy when our team wins, but we’re not going to whine and cry and thump our chests about which conference is best and other such nonsense. Go fishing. Get a job. The truth is Mark Richt is a slick yuppie with no work ethic. No matter what talent you guys have you will always underachieve. And you will always whine. It’s embarrassing. Can we have Uga VII? DirtyDawg——No, some Dawg fans’ whining and b*tching about the SEC championship game is NOT what this Gator likes to see. It’s degrading to an outstanding program and loyal fanbase——yours, not ours. No one ever makes themselves look better by minimizing the legitimate accomplishments of others. There is no shame in acknowledging that this season’s SEC championship game is potentially the greatest match-up in the game’s 17-year history.
No team can win every game, no team can be conference champion every season … including UGA. No head-to-head series is worthy of being called a “rivalry” when one team wins every game for seven years … including UGA-Georgia Tech. From adversity, disappointment and loss spring determination and future success. Remind your fellow Dawg fans.

EXCELLENT article Loran. Good link Chip. I have been making the same comparison for days. I am so tied of the “your dad is cooler than my dad” post and jealously of this coach or than. Erk Russell would have been fired 4 times in this blog.
This is the same crowd that this past summer called Saban a bum, and predicted UF was on its way down the toilet, that now sits dreamy eyed jealous.
The thing that I noticed that the 2 teams playing in the SECCG is this: neither one would be there with 18 season ending injuries. Somebody dispute that!

DirtyDawg, I agree with you to a degree. There are some fans on both sides who would not say jack in front of any fan that they say on these blogs. Injuries be d@@@@d, the dogs got beat by the Jackets by being out coached/hustled/adjusted in the 2nd half. My hat is off to the dogs for being up on the Jackets in the series, but even you have to admit this game has been kicked up a notch with the arrival of Johnson. That is all we could ask. At least we have a fighting chance now.

I guess the fact that Coach Richt is the 4th winningest active coach in NCAA supports your claim that he’s a “slick yuppie with no work ethic.” We lost 3 games this year and we’re heartbroken. That’s how solid our program is.
And let’s be real about conference talk. You tech fans have been on this blog all year “thumping your chest” that the SEC sucks and the ACC is so much better. You’re not seeing the picture —let me clear it up for you.
Your dawgs were supposed to win it all this season; Preseason #1, Know Your Dawgs, Stafford, Moreno, Massiquoi (sp), etc, GT was predicted to win 3 games —3!, GT is the youngest team in the ACC (the ACC went 6-4 vs. the SEC btw), second youngest team in the nation, new coach and new offense to be learned, etc.
UGA got whipped. During the last quarter and a half of the game UGA never had the ball with a chance to take the lead —GT was in control and everybody knew it because UGA couldn’t stop Dwyer or Jones.
UGA is climbing down from a peak, for the next couple of years or so the program will not attain the perch it is now coming down from. GT is on the rise, will be stronger next year, and even stronger in 2010. Gt will probably win 3-4 straight over UGA. UGA will never again dominate the series, it’s over. Domination ended for GT 40 years ago and domination for UGA ended last weekend. Get used to it because the times are not necessarily a-changin, they’ve already changed.

It’s amazing how many bloggers don’t know the difference between “they’re” and “there” and “their”. Did you people go to high school? But to more important matters. Neither of the schools in the SEC CG this year were there last year. That’s what is so great about the SEC. Every year you have five or six schools who have a good chance to make it to the SEC CG. UGA had a chance this year but we had probably as poor a defense as we’ve ever had in Athens. We need a coach with some fire. CMR is too placid. From what I’ve seen, all his assistant coaches are the same in demeanor. Going the JUCO route has not worked too well in the past; what makes them think it will work this time? It looks like Stacy Searels did another outstanding job with the O-line. Hopefully, one year he won’t have to play all freshmen and sophomores.

Your dawgs were supposed to win it all this season
No. They weren’t. Even the top-ranked teams are something like 6-1 to win it all. That means you have a 14% chance of winning it all. And that’s if you don’t have a major issue, like, say, many injuries to key starters throughout the year.
UGA got whipped.
One for time for you and the rest of the NATS retards, no, they did not. You have to at least outgain a team before you can thump your chest about “whipping” them. You won because of the turnovers, plain and simple. But I guess when you’re 1 for your last 8, you have to grab at straws.

And I think they will both have success at the next level. Of course, I’m hoping they go. I don’t want them looking for revenge next year against GT.

First, give credit where credit is due. THIS year the ACC is better than the SEC. It’s like Tech victory. They will win once every 8 years. Tech beat us bottom line no excuses and congrats to Tech. I’ll take 7 out of 8 anytime.
As for the SECCG, it should be a good one. I would love to see Bama kick Floirda in the teeth, but it will be close.

Of course dog fans are pulling for Bama! Florida has dominated them for the last 20 years! Keep on with the Tebow and Urban crying posts. At least Florida’s players and coach have Heart. Too bad Stafford can’t say the same. Also, when you give up the amount of yards rushing that UGA did against Tech… YOU GOT WHIPPED! Tech, like Alabama and Florida manned up against a soft UGA!!

AGTfan-Yep the pain wore off about 7PM on Sunday. I found out you have to enact a “24 hour” rule win or lose in college football. If you win have fun with it for the next 24. If you lose, let it go after 24 and look forward to the next one.
-The game was a great game. I mean 87 total points, close to a 1,000 yards total offense, in the biggest rivalry game of the year for both teams. If you didn’t enjoy watching that game…..you don’t enjoy college football. Hopefully next year I’ll have fun with my 24 hours AHAHAHAH
-The best part of the whole thing is we get to do it every year…..and this years game has already made next years game that much bigger.
- good luck in the Dome at the Chick…..I’ll be on my way to Orlando!

If the ACC is such a powerful conference, why can’t they fill half the seats for their championship game? Note the empty seats in the SEC championship game Saturday. There won’t be many, if any. Let’s face it, the ACC is a Division 1-AA conference.

Kendawg - 6-4. How can you explain that, and still say with a straight face the ACC is a division 1-AA conference? Did the 1-AA conference teams really woop up on the mighty SEC teams?
The SEC has two teams clearly better than anyone in the ACC. Their third best team, UGA (presumably) got beat by a “weak” division 1-AA team, apparently.

Gatorzone, I can say OU has a great offense, but they have no DEFENSE, their defense is made up of mostly freshman, having said that i would put my money on FL. However, I will have a better assessment after this weekend. I can’t make up my mind of how good FL and BAMA are. I think we will be able to tell after they face eachother given they are the best opponents each team as faced yet. If the SEC conf. game is a blow out, the winner will go on to beat OU. If the SEC conf. game is close, and BAMA and FL struggle with each other, i would think OU would have a better chance

Question for any of my fellow Dawg fans, what’s happened to Caleb King? I don’t think he’s been in but a play or two over the past three games. Is he hurt? Grades? Turned into another Jasper Sanks? CMR’s dog house? I know he missed his blocking assignment in his last game, but isn’t CMR a forgiving person? I thought we should be using him to run back kick-offs because of his speed, shiftiness, and ability to make people miss. (His bio words in recruiting, not mine.) Besides, he has been able to hold onto the ball better than Samuels. Thanks for the answers.

To Wayne…who said the Glory Days were over when Coach Dooley retired—you are nuts! and obviously know very little about Georgia football. Other than winning a MNC, which it took Coach Dooley 15 years and the signing of the greatest running back in NCAA history to accomplish—Richt has laready surpassed Dooley’s teams for consistency and overall achievement. This is not a knock on Dooley—whom I love—but a fact. He has won more games, has a better winning percentage, won as many SEC titles—in a stronger league—finished in the Top Ten more often—better record against Tech—aside from his record against one team, Florida, he has surpassed Dooley’s record in every area of comparison. THESE ARE THE GLORY DAYS and Georgia people need to wake up and realize it and embrace it—-

BBR, sure. Keep telling yourself that. The fact is UGA hates Florida because UF dominates them. They may be, but it is humorous nonetheless.

As a life long UGA fan- I have never been more disgusted in a team as this years Dogs. My hope is that Stafford goes pro- he is a great player but has no leadership abilities. All I heard week after week was how tough the SEC is and this and that and they played us close and we wont have blowouts in the SEC…on and on and on. meanwhile, bama and florida win like they are suppose to in the SEC. UGA celebrating at the half vs GaTech is sickening. This team does not deserve to wear the G on the helmet. We need a leader- no someone to make excuses. Take a look at what tebow said after the Ole Miss game. We need someone to step up next year or it will be the same.

Tech DID NOT whip the DAWGS … except in the 3rd Quarter. TECH then had enough continued offensive production in the 4th Quarter to outlast the DAWGS scoring efforts by 3 points. A 3-point victory by anyone over anyone is not a whipping or a blow-out … it is a good victory. I am a life-long TECH fan who relished in the victory this year over the DAWGS, but rest assured that there are plenty of TECH fans who know how to keep things in perspective.
To whoever it was who questioned the last time TECH won an ACC Championship, the answer is 1998 (tied with FL State) and 1990 (solo champion, not tied with anyone). Interestingly, however, I did a little research and during TECH’s entire tenure in the SEC they won 5 conference championships (solo champions, not tied with anyone). TECH shares this mark with another SEC school … guess who?

By dan
December 5, 2008 2:50 PM | Link to this
My mantra for life is that ” things are never as good or as bad as they seem”. This is true for the Dawgs this year. I didn’t think they were as dominant as they were at the end of last season nor do I think they are as bad as they appear now. The issues with defense concern me but what concerns me more is the mentality of this team. There is something mentally off with this team, and I think it goes deeper than coaching. It seems to me like they are almost afraid to be great. I think the first thing they need to do is evaluate their conditioning program and get back to drilling the fundamentals. I think there is a correlation between physical and mental health, and you could tell that this wasn’t a mentally sharpe and confident team down the stretch in comparison to other teams Richt has coached. Also I’m going to say what needs to be said, this generation of kid is pretty soft. They’ve been told how great they are all their life and I think that leads to some of the mental breakdowns. It’s like they feel like they can “turn it on and off” whenever they want. You really have to be on their asses about doing the little things right. This is why Florida and Alabama are doing well right now, they have talented players who are so sound fundamentally that it comes as second nature to them. It’s not about working harder it’s about working smarter. Just look at the Falcons this year. The morale was bad but they were able to turn it around this year. Yeah they had some key additions, but they had a coach that got them back to doing the basics. For something to become a habit there needs to be repetition. Once the basics are in place other things can prosper.

You people need to go back and look at this idiots meltdowns in big games starting with Auburn and West Virginia in 2005. Coach Erk always had a good pattern in his coaching abilities and KNEW what he was doing. He made men out of boys, something both Richt and Willie hasn’t done since becoming coaches at Georgia.. Those were the days when UGA was man enough and tough enough. Today our coaches coddle the prima donnas ! They take them swimming, bowling and also cry about not having an indoor practice facility. Excellent article from Smith, thanks for the link Chip. Would I love to be in Atlanta getting ready for the big game? Hell yes! Am I going to lose any sleep over it? Nope, none at all. Nor the Tech loss, after seven in a row it was Tech’s turn. They almost always play UGA tough, no matter the talent differential of the two teams. In the past few years the ball has bounced UGA’s way, this year a few missed tackles and missed assignments opened the door for Tech. I congratulate CPJ for sticking with his game plan and not letting his guys get down, but keeping their heads in the game. A come from behind victory on the road takes good coaching. CMR has done the same against other teams many times. Does it seem to anyone else that the Dawgs play better on the road? Do they concentrate better, or does getting the team away from all the distractions in Athens help? For Your consideration, 30 of CMR’s 80 victorys have come on the road. When You discount the Ga Southerns, Troys, and CMUs which are always home games, it would seem that at least half of Richt’s quality wins have been on the road. What could UGA do to increase their home field advantage? What is Richt doing for road games that he doesn’t do at home? As to the SECCG, I see it as the classic boxer against puncher match. In my experence the more skilled and quicker boxer usually wins, unless the puncher gets off some good shots early. If the puncher waits trying to land one big punch the boxer will pile up points and only have to avoid making a big mistake to win. I think the first half will tell the story. If the Tide can pound the ball, wear out the Gator D, and keep Tebow and company off the field they will have a good chance to win. If UF scores early and often the Tide is finished.’Bama has to get off early, they can’t score points in bunches like the Gators.

Reflecting back on the season, I can see everything quite clearly now. The UGA defense has been a work in progress. It wasn’t a finished product. We never should have expected UGA to put a good defensive product on the field. We overzealous Bulldog fans just got it all wrong despite the pre-season hype that we bought into. So, you see, it’s really nobody’s fault. If, anything, we probably overachieved. What? Who woke me up? Oh, it was just a dream. For a moment there, I thought 9-3 was a really good season. Thanks for your definition of a whipping. I never thought we whipped you this year until reading your explanation. The Rebels scored 21 on UF in the second half and whipped the mighty Gators. Huh, never thought of it quite that way. Thanks. You’re right. It sounds much worse than 31-30.

If an airplane is losing altitude, the pilot normally makes an adjustment.
If a football team is losing games due to poor defense (or excess penalties), does the coach normally make an adjustment?
ps, per the Cuz rule, Tech gets to crow for a year.

To THE OHIO State Suckeyes…..about your one ridiculous comment (hard to figure out which one since ALL of your comments in ALL of your blogs are ridiculous).
Since WHEN did THE OHIO State Suckeyes own ANYONE in the SEC? Your team has played UGA 1 time and

21 - 14 with the mighty MR. ESPN Kirk Herbstreit as the QB.
Anyway, IF your team goes to a BCS bowl, you can bet your mortgage that they WILL be Blown out Cause they Suck!!!
What is THE OHIO State Suckeyes record against EVERY SEC team that they’ve played in a big time bowl game? I do believe that it’s a MIGHTY 0-9
Now shut up and go bother the Michigan bloggers up north.
Chip, I am rooting for Alabama. I don’t know if they can beat Florida, but I would rather see Saban and the Tide prevail. I just don’t know if they’ve got enough offense or defense to keep up with Florida.

Tech won Saturday not because of talent but because of desire and coaching. They adjusted, we didn’t. Look at Tech’s roster and consider how many transferred due to the coaching change and the limited number they had on scholarship. It is amazing they did as well as they did this year. The only game they really played badly was UNC. UGA will be back next year, anxious to return the favor, to both the Gators and the Jackets. Until then, I have to tip my hat to Coach Johnson and the Techies.

Is there any way both of them could lose tomorrow?
It is indeed a bitter time to be a dawg…questioning everything and lamenting our 3 appearances in the big game…all of which we backed in to after losing to Florida.
When is it going to be “our” year? Last year should have been our year but UT hosed us 3 different ways, beating us, then winning when we needed them to lose and then losing when we needed theme to win.
This year we paid our dues on the national scene having never been pre-season #1 before.
Senior Day said it all this year for me…other than Mo Mass, there was not another significant Senior leader announced to the crowd. Until CMR can keep a large enough group around to bond into Senior leadership, I don’t see it happening like we’d like it to.

Dear Dawg4Ever, Yes Sir!!! Stafford and Moreno need to come back next year. Of course the NFL’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement will have expired and they will most assuredly have addressed the rookie compensation issue. However, you keep telling Stafford and Moreno that they must come back next year with the opportunity to MAYBE win an SEC Championship—If they can beat Florida in jacksonville and then beat Alabama in Championship Game. of course that will only be an SEC Crown and not the BIG PRIZE why anyone with character would come back for, but then we have seen getting to that game has a lot to do with luck. So we give up millions for a bunch of MAYBES because YOU think they need to improve. I don’t think so!1

Georgia Bulldogs have a glaring problem on having no sacks all season long. We are not aggressive enough. And, since we are not even a Top 25 Total Defense, it is not working to just sit back and try to maintain our position. Trying to hold your ground when you are not a Top 25 Total Defense, instead of pressuring their quarterback., clearly is not working.
In addition, we have recruited Defensive Ends very poorly, who primarily are responsible for sacks. We don’t have any speed at Defensive End. And, no technique to get to their quarterback.
Number 94 in the nation at getting sacks of their quarterback.
Number 71 in the nation in Turnover Margin, too, as a result of not pressuring their quarterback to throw early.
We are not recovering the fumbles, when their backs do put the ball on the ground either. This, also, is a lack of speed along the front 7. Our philosophy has been, and is, to put our speed at linebacker to cover or protect when they get past our plodding defensive front. We put our speed at linebacker, even when we have 9 linebackers already with speed at linebacker. There are some linebackers who could play Defensive End in college football. But, no we stick with keeping all our speed at linebacker, even if they cannot get on the field and play.
Our Philosophy on Defense is wrong.
Our Personnel Decisions on Defense are wrong.
I do not see Rodney Garner asserting himself, when he is clearly painfully aware of our short-comings on the DL, and allowing John Jancek to keep all the speed at linebacker when several of those linebackers could have clearly been useful at Defensive End. Jon Fabris is not a Defensive End by trade. He never played the position. And, moreover, he has allowed us to not only not recruit speed at Defensive End, nor teach technique he never learned as a player since he never played Defensive End in his life, but Jon Fabris has failed to tell Willie Martinez what Willie should have recognized on his own, that we had to move several speedy linebackers to Defensive End.
By ............................................BuLLdawg
December 6, 2008 3:58 AM | Link to this
This is a bigger problem, when you note we have recruited but 1 Defensive End for a team void of Defensive Ends, again next year; and even more importantly that 1 commit at DE is 4.93 speed in the 40-yard dash. My mother is faster than that.
It’s not working folks.
It didn’t work this year again, and we are set up for exactly more of the same for the next several years now too.
It’s painful.
It’s not like Jon Fabris does such a great job of Special Teams, that Coach Richt can keep him on the staff for that and overlook his glaring lack of experience as Defensive End Position Coach and how much trouble Jon Fabris has caused us at Defensive End. It’s not like we have 18 men lost for the season and they played Defensive End. We didn’t have a Defensive End this season. And, none next year either.
There is no fire over there on Defense, and that is the sole responsibility of Coach Richt and Willie Martinez that they don’t have anyone over there getting the most out of the men who are on the field playing.
They don’t tell them anything.
Last week, again, they had an In-Game Come to Jesus Meeting. What happened ? Not a damn thing. That’s what happened after the players meeting with the coaching staff on the sidelines.
We could discuss other glaring problems with Jon Fabris.
Number 60 in the nation at kick-off returns. God Awful.
And, then there are our own kickoffs, all of which are Jon Fabris. We cannot kickoff, nor return a kickoff to save our mortal soul.
We never have been able to.
Not the whole time Jon Fabris has been here.
We have a Little Clique of Coaches, none a one of which is recognized as any damn good at what he does, who are clueless. It’s just a little gang there on the staff of friends, who are not here to coach and who have done a pitiful job of keeping out players from our roster who are bad apples.

They don’t know how to coach their positions because they never played them in their lifetime, and they think they see something in some recruit that he can play the position they neither have nor can teach. So, they recruit the guy and what we end up with is 11 of 85 are arrested.
13 percent of our recruits are arrested.
Every year, arrested and suspended 13 percent of the recruits.
Now, if I told you that we were not even a Top 25 Total Defense, that the coach never played the position in his life, and that we are Number 94 in sacks in the nation and Number 60 in Kickoff returns with the talent we have of Offense to put out there, how can it be tolerated that in addition to all this crap, 13 percent of their players they recruited were arrested ?
I’ m not putting up with it again all off-season again. Rest assured, I will call out these so-called supposed coaches on Coach Richt’s Staff. I’m tired of it.
I am going to get to this Tight Ends Coach, John Lilly, next – who, by the way – never played Tight End in his lifetime either. And, who played a trouble-maker Tripp Chandler at Tight End as his supposed starter. And, I am going to call out these recruits these nobody coaches recruited here to represent our school in this fashion too :
Tight End Tripp Chandler. B.S.
Defensive End Michael Lemon. B.S.
Why did I pay for scholarships for these two (2) to our school ?
And, with 11 of them, there a ton more we can discuss.
13 percent of our Scholarship recruits, arrested in 1 year. And, we have 13 percent arrested and suspended every year.
Coach Richt, sir, you are out of your mind to stand pat on your “staff” and it is going to cost you your job.
Who is ready for this off-season with another 13 percent arrested and suspended for the Oklahoma State and South Carolina games to start next season ?

Your article is interesting, but if your so concerned with the Dawgs giving up so many points to Mich St. already, why don’t you in one of your sit-down interviews ask those UGA coaches some real questions. Man up to them and ask something important, 1. Why does opposing teams always average starting field position around the 45 yardline?
Why at times this year do we only have 10 men on the field on defense? And on special teams?
Why do we continue to throw the reciever the sideline pass at the line of scrimmage resulting in loss or no gain when the same fullback pass on the sideline usually goes for 20 yards or more?
4.Whats happened to the toss sweep?
5.Whats happened to tight end production this year? And don’t give me that injury excuse either. Watched them warm up before every game this year, 6 of them, always been one of our strong points on offense. All of them look very capable of catching the ball.
next time you interview coaches why don’t you ask some of these things? Instead of all the small talk?
Better yet just come right out and ask CMR if he’s going to let Mich St. hang 40 on his UGA team.

The Gators are definately not man enough to beat Bama! Bama will control the line of scrimmage and mandandle the weak Gators, similar to what the Rebels did to them. Their only chance to win would be by turnovers. Again, the Gators are way overated, espeacially Tebow!

There is no way CMR can stop 40 points by Michigan State in the next game, nor Oklahoma State or South Carolina in the next 2 games to begin next season.
Anyway, for those 2 opening games next season, he will SUSPEND another 11 players for GETTING DRUNK, FIGHTING, DUI, ASSUALT, BATTERY, DRIVING WITHOUT A LICENSE, DRIVING WITHOUT A VALID LICENSE, DRUGS …
CMR has no DE. As for TE, haven’t seen 1 of those all season long either.

That’s what i was getting at, we’ve always utilized the tight end and have done very well with it in the past. 6 tight ends warming up before each game one of them should be able to catch, Not many teams out there that don’t have a problem with arrests. Read where even Penn St. may be without their mascot for the bowl game because of an arrest. Maybe we’ll recruit some Defensive ends this year that can get after somebody. Just wasn’t all that excited about Chip and his questions for CMR. What does he think about Ala. Fla. matchup. Who cares what UGA coach thinks about ALA. FLA> matchup? Ask some real questions is all i was getting at.

Another question i left off my wish you would ask list. Why don’t UGA have a special teams coach, for special teams only? Fabris has all he can do keeping up with the Defensive ends. Since Urban Meyer has been at FLA. they have blocked 49 kicks. He is their special teams coach. that’s an amazing stat. Don’t you think?

It’s pretty brutal to be a UGA fan and watch this game today. With the expectations coming into this year this has to be one of the most disappointing seasons of alltime for UGA fans. Even worse than Donnan’s collapse with the “greatest collection of talent” he had ever seen.
This year was an absolute colossal failure by Richt and crew. To give up so many points GAME AFTER GAME to teams that really weren’t very good. To get blown out by Bama at home and Florida and then losing to Georgia Tech when we had a chance to salvage this disastrous season… It’s just terrible.
Kentucky was terrible and we couldn’t stop them. Tech had ZERO points going into the fourth quarter against NORTH CAROLINA yet somehow they had 40+ on UGA… There are no excuses for that one…
I don’t know how to get excited for a consolation bowl game against a middle of the road Big 10 team… It’s hard to do.

Bama in a close game. Looking at the two teams and using my philosophy, physical usually outdoes finesse as the reason.
I’d consider UGA a finesse team and comparing the games we played Bama came out and punched us. We hung with UF until we gave up and quit due to the mountain of mistakes in that game.
Bama, had we had no penalty negating the turnover and stayed with a more physical type game we might have kept it closer but I honestly think they would still have whipped us, we just aren’t that tough. However, our finesse game could have been the difference once they wore down a bit, we didn’t have a good gameplan for a physical team.
UF, IMO with different playcalling early in the red zone, IMO a couple of bad coaching decisions we’re up at halftime and that game could have been different. But then the GaTech debacle so who knows.
Bottom line is the two best teams are there, it should be a great game and good luck to the winner….I will be at Hero’s amongst the Tide and Gators with no Dawg in the fight.

For all of you that have stated that no one cares about the ACC Championship game this year…you’re right. It’s a repeat of last year. Both teams are mediocre. Many would have preferred to have FSU play against Georgia Tech, but I can’t complain about that. Tech should have beaten VA, VaTech, and UNC, but we didn’t. That’s the consequence that we get for losing those games.
Also, our offense didn’t “click” until we played against Miami. It took us that long to finally realize how the triple option works, and we took advantage of it against Miami and Georgia, and hopefully we’ll do the same against LSU or South Carolina at the Peach Bowl. I have a very good feeling about next year. Many of the ACC’s teams are young, so it will be more challenging and more rewarding to win those games.
As for UGA, you probably will lose Stafford and Moreno due to the new NFL rule that’s supposed to be established (if it hasn’t already), and MoMass is “graduating.” I honestly don’t think that you guys will beat GaTech for another 2 or 3 years, but that’s my honest opinion. Yes, you’ve won 7 out of 8, but stop living in the past. If you guys pull the 7-winning-streak card, I’ll pull the 8-winning-streak card.
Anyway, I wish UGA luck in their bowl game, and I’m going to enjoy going to my bowl game at the Dome!

Not only did the ACC beat the SEC 6-4 in head-to-head games this season, but Bama and Florida account for three of the SEC’s wins. One of the SEC’s losses was to Duke, our conference’s worst team. Duke is 51st in Sagarin’s ratings. One spot above Vandy, and higher than half the SEC. Our worst — let me repeat that — worst team is as good as or better than half of your conference.
Take away the two elite teams and what do you have? Ten teams that managed to scrounge together 1 win in 7 games against the “weak” ACC. Now, I’m not going to say the ACC is perennially better than the SEC, but this year we definitely were. From what I can tell next year may be little different, though there’s a possibility we could become that elite team for the ACC. If we can replace the few people we lose, if we can implement the remaining half of Paul Johnson’s offense, if we can shore up the team in a few areas…I think our D needs a little work, but I also think our offense can play with just about anyone.
The ACC is not a conference of weaklings, and it’d be nice if SEC fans could occasionally admit it.

NOW go and read about the Huge(LOL) recruiting year the Rev is putting together. Not that it matters because his BOTOXED brain can’t coach or motivate. By the way, don’t make the league look any worse—Beat Somebody in your mid level bowl game.

UGA, You’re CORRECT he will not take a snap in the NFL. Much like the little left handed punk that actually managed to beat Florida once in a 4 year career. What he will do is play for 2 National Championships in what will probably only be a 3 year career. By the way, did the over reated Polack have much of an NFL career. See, when you play out of position against MEN instead of BOYS sometimes bad things happen. Really don’t know why this is germaine but you initiated it.

Mobile Dog, I don’t know if that is Mobile or mobile, BUT either way I would like you to go to Google and punch in “Delusional”. Start with “Delusional” and if that does not help move on to “Psychotic”. I actually can understand what you’re saying—somewhat—about the “IFS”. If you would have come up with the “general theory of relativity” people would be invoking your name instead of Einstein.

BuLLdawg…… great observation on Rodney Garner. I’m still ticked off about Kentucky running up our middle in the second half. It’s just one example where the defensive line did not make the adjustment in the second half — and it happened all year long. I say let Garner go “back” to Auburn (or where ever) and then the Dawgs can get a defensive line coach that can make those all important second half adjustments.

Mark Richt and the loser pups will NEVER win a championship.. Coach Urban Meyer and them Gators rule. Envy pups envy, it will be a while before your program gets on our level. I don’t want to ever read these asinine blogs stating Georgia can compete with Florida. UGA’s nothing but a squad full of overhyped primadonna soft thugs. #1 preseason ranking’s my arse! Have fun at the “I don’t really matter bowl” while the Gators are kicking some Sooner arse and getting yet ANOTHER RING? How many rings does Fatford and Noshow have? NONE.. CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP!!

After watching chemistry & passion UF played with last night in beating UA, I grudgingly have to admit UGA isn’t in their league right now. Stafford’s legacy is no championships and will forever be in the shadow of Tebow. What is really disappointing is that we had Moreno to complement him as well as MoMass & AJ Green. Tech came to our house and played with more enthusiasm & took the game away from us. Our best win was beating LSU, who isn’t even a top 30 team. If Dawg fans are honest, the schedule wasn’t close to what it was made out to be and we lost to every good team we played. We’ll learn alot about CMR in the next year.

As everyone knows, the Jackets put UGA to rest this year in football 45-42. Much whining and gnashing of teeth has been observed in the “Bulldog Nation” lamenting about how it was possible to score 42 points and still lose. Surely many years will pass before another such outrage could occur again.
Breaking news… The Lady Jackets beat the “Lady Dogs” (I think there is another term for female dogs, but I digress) Friday night 57-42! As reported in the AJC, “The Bulldogs’ 42-point output was the lowest in their last 58 games and, Tech coach MaChelle Joseph cheerfully noted, matched the football team’s total in its loss to Tech last Saturday.”
Well OK, maybe it is possible again but that was women’s basketball after all. NO WAIT! On Saturday the UGA men’s basketball team lost to Illinois by the score of…76-42. According to our good friends at the AJC the blowout was, “their worst loss since an 87-49 defeat to Georgia Tech on Dec. 5, 2004.”

Hey Willie,
I hope you watched the physical play yesterday by Alabama, Florida and Oklahoma and how it often swung the momentum during their games. Or did you blow both games off in favor of another south Florida recruiting trip searching for another 4-5 star recruit you can turn into a p*** while he plays for you?
I hope you watched both games yesterday because obviously you did not learn anything from getting your head handed to you on a platter by Alabama and Florida in person by Al and FL. And you can learn a ton about unpredictability and physical domination from watching Brent Venables’ scheme and constant adjustment.
Dude, the best defenses don’t put fear in other teams verbally or by referring them to Rivals to show how well they recruited. The best defenses put fear into offenses mentally with confusion and unpredictability and physically with their SHOULDER PADS. And they do it as often as they can before the play starts and until the whistle blows. Their corners and safety’s are taught to shed blocks when receivers are holding them, not set a back peddling speed record. Their receivers blocking your guys resembled me pushing my shopping cart for fun in a Wal-mart parking lot. Dude, don’t get me wrong, how to use your hands properly is critical, but don’t forget how to use the shoulder pads properly along the way. It’s almost like you think shoulder pads are just one more thing a guy can hold onto when pulling a guy to the ground.
Dude, are you trying to reinvent the game of football? Sure strategy is critical, and if you need to please study more in the off season and recruit less. But at the end of the day, it’s still about tackling and tackling physically. And the more times a QB-RB-WR gets cold cocked during the first half, the less effective he will be in the 2nd half. Ask Colt Brennan. And speaking of Colt Brennan, are you going to hang your hat and entire career on one defensive blowout against him and his glorified D-2 school? What would have happened last year if you used your 2008 p*** philosophy in the Sugar Bowl? I’ll tell you. We would have won the game 51 to 44 and Colt Brennan would have amassed about 600 yards and cost some poor NFL club a 1st round draft pick. But Willie, you did yourself and everyone else a favor then, YOU manned up, set, prepared and accomplished a mission. Well, dude I didn’t see any mission this year. Except maybe the SC game.
Lastly, the best defenses in the NCAA play like Alabama, Florida did yesterday and against you. NOT like you coached during the 2nd half of this season. Offenses fear and respect the best defenses and the exact opposite was true of yours. Actually I had hoped you would emulate this style after being taken to school by Keven Steele and Charlie Strong but YOU DID NOT. Not against Tech anyhow. Now I have to wait another 21 days to see if you will correct it in the bowl game. Why don’t you shut me and all the other loud mouth critics up? Why don’t you man up and completely dominate somebody?

hey all you Gator haters, I just heard in about 3 hours it will be announced that Florida will get screwed out of the NC game. I hate FL but really feel for them if this is true. I say Eliminate the BCS, and play the bowls like you used to and have 3-4 teams claim they are number 1. I have complete confidence the sportswriters, announcers and commentators will screw up any “plus one” or “play off system” that comes a long, just like they did the Heisman selection process. Sure they will blame the OK-TX match up on the computers instead of the people who wrote and control the software for those computers-THEM

Is there anyone out there that still thinks the BCS is a viable way to crown a champion? If You do just consider the Texas Longhorns, they defeated OU but are forced to sit on the sidelines and watch the team they BEAT play in the BCSNCG! Hey Gen, have You heard from Cuz? If so please let me know how he’s doing. Thanks.

My question to you would be what do you know about the “theory of relativity”, since reading your Ignorant, Arrogant, Careless, Impersonal, Hateful, comments, it’s obvious to all of us that “You’re” not “relative” to anyone.
Congrats to all UA, and UF folks, both teams demonstrated how to come out prepared and play on the big stage. Great game. Now stop all your trash talking and act like you’ve been there before. Gators, seeya next year….Count on it. Bama, hope we get to you too….

The whole athletic program is comical. Damons Evans should be having second thoughts about the fluke Basketball season last year and should have shown Dumb Dennis the door. Now CMR is gonna keep Buffoon Willie. Loran Smith has absolutely lost it trying to compare the bald headed galoot Willie to the steel headed tough man ERK! BTW what a SEC Championship game yesterday! Too bad UGA will never reach that level of play while CMR is the Head coach at UGA! Both Meyer and Saban can make men out of boys!

MDawg, That would prove My point. We have three one loss teams with Heisman contenders at QB and tremendous offenses. Where is the justice in any of these teams not having a chance to win it all on the field? You also have a couple of good teams at Penn St and USC. I can picture a Rose Bowl Game between Penn St and USC with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser going home. Can You tell me that game wouldn’t generate millions in ad dollars? How about UF and Texas in the Sugar Bowl? With playoffs the bowl games would actually mean something. As it is, ‘Bama’s or UF’s trip to the Sugar bowl will only earn money and braggin’ rights, like UGA’s trip last year. It will count for nothing, except the coaches’ won loss record.

How bad has the Orange Bowl gotten? Boston College vs. Cincinnati? Are you kidding me? What a ratings and attendance nightmare! I say move this Mickey Mouse Bowl up where it belongs (Orlando). And allow the real Orange Bowl people (the non BCS guys) to pick up some SEC/Big 12 teams and make this what it once was. A GREAT event.

I saw a copy of it this morning and the “final” version unexpectedly came out just like this-
Oklahoma Texas Florida USC Alabama Penn State Utah Texas Tech Ohio State Boise State
I do not know how close each team was to the other but I know that’s what orinally came out of the “final” computer this morning.
Now the big question is how many votes were messaged, how hard were they messaged and how many voters were allowed to submit new ballots before the final version is released later today.
If it’s a FL-OK match up I think someone should have to explain why to Texas. Likewise to Florida if the original list prevails.

There is a good column in today’s Albany Herald sports section about Stafford turning pro. I have said that staying for one’s senior year makes one a better QB. However, staying does not necessarily result in a higher posistion in the draft {Brady Quinn, for example} and the salary cap for rookies could possibly cost Staff 30 million. That is quite a nest egg in a job that could end on any play. If it looks good Matt, take the money and run. Your rookie contract could make You secure for life! UGA has a good program and will survive without Stafford. I sure would like to see him play at Sanford Stadium with a more mature line and Green and King on the ends, but that’s a lot of money to risk for the pleasure of playing for free!

Patsy, Stafford has had money before, he was born with it. His parents live in a very exclusive Dallas area. Gil Brandt, VP of player personel for the Dallas Cowboys from 1960 to 1989, is one of their neighbors.

Should be UF-OK. At ths time, I don’t know who’s in…What I tell TX (if) is your conference tiebreaker, plus your loss to TT, did you in…Albeit, I like TX. I also like McCoy and Tebow both for the Heisman. Tebow gets a little nudge for winning he SECCG.

I’m tickled to death. While my beloved Bulldawgs are not playing in the BCS Championship Game like I had hoped, they are playing MSU where my daughter is a senior. I’ll be wearing red/black and green/white that day and enjoying every minute of it.
And to the Ohio State fan, your team may be going to a BCS bowl but they’re going to get their butt kicked by a great Texas team. Hope they run up the score on y’all just to make their case for reworking the BCS mess.

UGA Defense will get shredded by Javon Ringer and MSU Spartan Rushing Attack. There is absolutely no way UGA will be able to control Javon for 4 quarters. It will be GaTech game “revisited”, except MSU has a better passing attack to go with Javon Ringer.
As a UGA fan, I just hope Stafford, Moreno and Co. find a way to score close to 50pts, the only way UGA can win this game.

Dear Get your facts Straight,
You do realize that humans have only one brain as opposed to the plural “brains” you refered to when saying that Chip was an idiot. You may want to think about things like that before calling someone out on their intelligence.
