UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

By the way, hoops have started
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Anybody see Georgia’s basketball game last night at Western Kentucky? The Bulldogs lost 67-63 but it was a very good game and a pretty good effort. The Hilltoppers, coach Dennis Felton’s old team, knocked off No. 3 Louisville just this past weekend.
Georgia was the victim of some tough luck once again. It was ahead by five to seven points toward the end of the first half and, even after a 14-4 WKU run, stayed close throughout the second. But center Albert Jackson aggravated an ankle sprain and had to leave the game for a long spell, and he had been playing very well defensively. Also, freshman Trey Thompkins was playing well for a while but, again, ended up having to sit for a long time in the second half because he was gassed. Having missed all that time with foot and leg injuries, it’s going to be several weeks before Thompkins approaches anything resembling good condition.
A couple of ill-conceived 3-point attempts by Zac Swansey and Dustin Ware ended up costing Georgia the game. Terrance Woodbury was the leading scorer with 18 points but, once again, it took him 15 shots to get and that’s just way too inefficient. He needs to take fewer shots and the Dogs need to run more stuff for Thompkins, in my opinion.
But overall what I saw from Georgia was encouraging. As always it plays hard on defense and, if it can get everybody healthy for a stretch, has a chance to be a decent offensive team.
The Bulldogs are in the midst of a killer scheduling stretch. From Western Kentucky they go to Chicago for a game against Illinois (this was the one arranged for Billy Humphrey well before he was kicked off the team this past summer. Billy’s third arrest — the last one for DUI — led to his dismissal). They’ll play Virginia Tech in Athens next Tuesday and play Missouri and Georgia Tech the first week of January before SEC play begins.
“I probably over-scheduled to be honest,” coach Dennis Felton told me last week. “But I wanted to challenge these guys.”
Meanwhile, some links:
Macon’s David Hale puts a bow on Georgia’s football season and identifies the next generation of stars for the Bulldogs… .
Coach Mark Richt has walked the fine line of trying not to make excuses and trying to explain what the Bulldogs’ season did not turn out as planned. But it’s hard to overlook the fact they had 18 season-ending injuries (including redshirted players, of course). That number’s actually 19 if you add linebacker Darryl Gamble, who suffered a broken fibula from one of those hundreds of cut blocks by Georgia Tech this past Saturday. Anyway, Pete Thamel of the New York Times points out in this story how Alabama was very fortunate regarding injuries this season and that’s a big reason it got to the title game… .
Looks like Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is snooping around outside Lubbock… .
Alabama’s bearded players and other such important tidbits from Birmingham’s Ian Rappaport.

…UGA gave up 41, 49, 38, 38, and 45 points in games this year, but no coaching changes will be made. Now, we open at OK State next year - we may have to score 100 points if we hope to win cause we know they will score a ton of points!

Not much of a scoop, but Clemson will announce this afternoon that they will be playing in the Gator Bowl (don’t know whothey play but that other guy who has a blog here said yesterday it would be Nebraska). The IPTAY website had tickets to multiple games listed yesterday, while today they only list the Konica Gator Bowl as tickets you can request.

Chip,
Can you briefly explain the rules about cut blocks and blocking in the back? I thought there was a five yard limit. I guess Gamble’s injury is why freshman John Knox was on the field. He looked totally lost.Is this the best we have as a back up? Is there competition in practice or are the starters annoited?

Here’s a recent study I just completed ya’ll might be interested in.
“What if UGA played Gardner Webb this year, who would win and what would the score be?
So, I’ve been running the numbers since Sunday through various algorithms and computers models (like us nerds like to do), and was finally able to come to this conclusion.
The results:
Gardner Webb wins in OT 13-10 due to GW’s stout defense and UGAg’s lack of height on defense. Blocking the FG that Michael Johnson was able to block with his 6’-7” frame. Rennie Curran comes inches shy of blocking a 38 yard FG .
Thank goodness for Central Michigan.

murfdawg: Cut blocking is completely illegal at the high school level. At the college level it is legal as long as it’s done within the line of scrimmage, not from the outside-in and not within a high-low double-team. It’s very technical and hard to enforce. You can never block in the back or cut-block outside the scrimmage area… . I, too, noticed a block in the back by Tech, I think it was on the first long run. But officials aren’t going to see everything all the time. If Ellerbe just wraps up it’s just a good gain anyway.

Is it me, or does RAMBLE ON just live on these blogs? I can picture it now. He lives alone. Probably watches a lot of g@y porn. Can’t get off the computer. Hasn’t showered in weeks. Cheetos bags all over his room.
Hey RAMBLE ON - how does it feel to get to blow your wad over a Tech victory over UGA every eight years or so. This was your 8-year coming org@sm. I guess we’ll revisit this in 2016. You dork.

Hoops…Hoops? Don’t talk about Hoops. We are still trying to find a UGA football Coach who will man up and take responsibility for what took place this past saturday. Except they all hide and refuse to talk about it like it never happened.
Willie says “they had the players in the right place, but didn’t make plays”. Way to throw them under the bus Willie. How about you man up and say “we didn’t do a good job at all. Give Tech credit, but we failed our players as coaches”
CMR didn’t say much of anything, he should run for office b/c he’s great at NOT answering when asked a direct question.
So nobody took responsibility for giving up 400 plus yards rushing to a high school offense that ran 4 plays all day long.
UGA is not Man Enough. Just like Pat Dye said a few years ago. Our Coaches sugar coat everything and our players aren’t stepping up when they have to. (Defensively) Not a physical team, with a passive defensive philosophy. Might as well go join the big EAST while we still can. Only way we’ll have a chance to win a BCS game again.

Careful Supes,
Hoops is an important program at UGA, or it should be. I know we’re only considered as a football factory by many, and comments like yours only solidify that perception! For God’s sake, we were the SEC Champions in round ball last year!
As to your comments about CMR, I think you need to give the man an opportunity to fix things before you ‘through him under the bus’ to use your term. I believe we are ‘Man Enough’ (again your words) to compete. Focus and determination is all that is needed for this team. We played well for different quarters/halfs in the various games, including the losses. We need to ensure that we maintain our focus and energy level throughout the game.
A final comment, you deride the 400+ yards by Tech as a “high school offense”, and many other posters did the same BEFORE the game. I don’t think anyone at the game thinks of their offense as being a “high school offense” anymore. If YOU do, then you are simply saying that we have a high school quality defense since we couldn’t stop them. If that is what you are saying then I disagree with you. If that is not what you are saying then your comments are deceptive, and I still disagree with you.
As to us joining the Big Least… your comment makes you look even more ridiculous. I know we are all hurting after the Tech game, but your comments reflect more of being a poor loser than an avid fan.
Just a few thoughts you might want to consider before posting again. Stick with the Dawgs; we’re just fine thank you!

CHIP TOWERS YOU SAID “Darryl Gamble, who suffered a broken fibula from one of those *hundreds of cut blocks by Georgia Tech this past Saturday.*
uh, GT only ran 62 plays (at 6.9 yards a clip I might add). Could you please explain this outrageous inaccurate statement?
I know working for the AJC, facts aren’t a priority, but come on!

Chip, Thanks for the clarification. I kind of remember that is one reason this offense died. The cut blocks downfield. Once the officiating and defenses have a refresher course, it will disappear again. One great example was the tackle eligible play that GT ran. Look a Curran getting cut down then getting back up to make the tackle. That led to the field goal. Difference in the game? I don’t know. but it was like the phantom hit to head on JPW.
We still had plenty of opportunities to stop GT, and we didn’t. Congrats to them and see you in ATL next year.

note to RAMBLE ON:
62 plays,10 players blocking could be over 100 cut blocks. You do the math. I can’t count past 45. Also, you guys are so good you could possibly make two blocks on the same play. Please dust off your slide rule and give me answer.

Hey Ramble On, 5 offensive lineman x 62 plays = 310 cut blocks. Now there probably weren’t 310 cut blocks, but you get the point. It’s simple math brother!!

Ramble On: I always enjoyed that Zeppelin song, too… As murfdawg has already broken down for you, I was thinking 62 offensive plays and five linemen cut-blocking per play. That’s 310 by my count. I don’t think that’s outrageous, but I couldn’t say whether or not it’s accurate because I haven’t broken down every play on the video. Would you feel better if I said “dozens?” How about, “a lot?” What difference does it make? That’s what Tech does. Ask CPJ.

Gen. Neyland: That’s “imposter” or “poser” but not “imposer.” … Unfortunately that’s not something we can do anything about. However, if someone is being offensive — especially using your handle while doing so — I can do something about it… .
Wish I could do more. I’m told we’re switching to a different blogging platform in the not too distant future. Perhaps then I can.

I said during the game, “how many broken ankles has tech left in its wake this year”. Not a dig, I know its legal, and they do it well. I mostly noticed the stlye as it seemed we had a guy right there to make the play, and then plunk we didn’t. Great blocking, just scary.
Supes, you are just a broken record young man.
There is a thing called recruiting, maybe you have heard of it. No coach in America gets on camera and airs the dirty laundry in December. And you know everything our staff says or thinks now huh. You were right there when they talked about the Tech game in the meetings?
I better not hear him saying anything publically but coach speak, or I will be the one PO’d.
You are so concerned about who has stones….you seem pretty passionate and convinced that you KNOW something about the direction the coach needs to take…lets here what you are going to do about it..surely something more than cut and paste the same old worn out crap in a free blog. Aaron,
The Dome would be 80/20 with Georgia outselling Tech even after the disappointing 9-3 season.
I can only hope that CMR will do something to get the program back on track. Lack of discipline and horrible defensive play must change.
Why can’t the Georgia men make a damn free throw? WKY is a good mid-major but Georgia should’ve won that game.

Actually Knowshon and MoMass were not 5 star.
It depends on which service you pleadge allegiance to. Scout adds a couple more that will prove to be stars in the future I believe, and a couple that arent even here any more. Rivals is a little less free wheeling with the stars.
Stafford, Green, were 2 on both. Samuel was another one that I am certain in time we are going to be glad we got.
The last one I actualy made a mistake (I know), thought it was Moreno, but was not. Reshad Jones was 5 star in both. Maybe his best year is still to come. (to be fair, this is only his first year as full time starter and did have some huge games this year.)

Are you telling me that we are actually playing basketball during football season? And if so, do these games actually count, while football is still being played? Heck, I did not even know UGA had a basketball program until I arrived in the Winter of 78. Imagine my surprise. Of course you can’t. Small town redneck teenager.
I had been following UGA football since my Dad said, “Son that Tarkenton kid is something else”. Heck it was black and white and I thought our colors were Grey and light Grey. Imagine my surprise when I got a red and black sweater for Christmas. It was not Grey.
I Ramble on worse than Ramble on. Guess that Oldtimers is kicking in. Well in my day, to be continued later, medication time. No thanks Nurse Ratchet, I would rather have a bottle in front of me instead of the frontal lobotomy.

Be gracious, or pretend like you win every other year. My nephew could not understand why I was bummed out at the end of the game. Of course he is only five and he thought that Tech always lost the football game. Well, just in his life anyway. Ramble On: I know exactly which play your talking about. I don’t know why they didn’t call it there. Knowshon was bitchin for one on the Tech sideline earlier in the game. I think the bottom line is that crew just wasn’t calling a lot of that rough stuff Saturday. Just letting two big rivals play I guess… .
Big Jacket: I’m not saying Tech did anything wrong with the cut blocks. The rules allow it. I was merely pointing out what happened to Gamble is the result sometimes. That’s why it’s not allowed in high schools play. CMR had brought it up during the week when asked why more high schools don’t use that offense. So when I was watching the replay I was fascinated to see it in action. It definitely works!

Was sick and didn’t make it to the computer yesterday, but thanks for the change of subject, even though no one commented on the subject. I did watch the WKU game the other night and have been to all but one home game so far. Like you said, lots of potential, but the same maddening stretches where they take bad shots and even miss the easy ones. TW was shooting great through most of the 1st half and seemed to get overconfident and start taking off balance shots or shots when he had other guys with better looks. Thompkins will be a beast when he gets in shape, but it’s kind of sad that our best big man also has our best outside shot. The 2008 football season is dead to me - too frustrating; we’re going to pretend that the gala and bowl game are for preseason 2009. I’m moving on to bball. The great thing about that is that my expectations are much lower than football, so it’s easy to be pleasantly surprised.
