UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

It’s all relative for Dogs, Jackets

OK, here we go into Georgia-Georgia Tech week. It has shaped up just exactly how we expected in the preseason, hasn’t it?

One team is getting ready to possibly play in its conference championship game while the other one is just hoping to put a positive ending on an otherwise disappointing season.

Raise your hand if you expected the Yellow Jackets to be the ones still in the hunt for a championship. They will be in the ACC Championship in Tampa [not Jacksonville—thanks bloggers!] if Virginia beats Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Saturday. That game also kicks off at noon.

I’m just teasing the Bulldogs. The truth is Georgia (9-2) has had a solid season. Just not up to expectations. Regardless of whose expectations they were or how realistic they were, it’s like they say — it’s all relative.

You could equate these two programs’ seasons to mountain climbing. For the Bulldogs, who began the season as the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, only reaching the peak of Mount Everest or K-2 was going to do. The Jackets (8-3) had their own mountain to climb but, in this particular year at least, that summit was much more modest. Call theirs Mt. McKinley.

Whatever you want to call it, all that junk will be out the window on Saturday. Georgia will be going for it’s eighth straight win over Tech, matching the longest streak in the series. Tech will be doing everything in its power to see that the Bulldogs don’t win that eighth one in a row.

We’ll have all kinds of great stories coming to you out of both camps all week long leading up to Saturday’s game in Athens. Let us hear from you about what you want to read. And as always, let me have your questions — legitimate and reasonable only please — to ask coach Mark Richt and/or players at the press luncheon on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, here’s a few links:

Florida Today columnist and UF grad Peter Kerasotis believes Urban Meyer will leave Florida for Notre Dame.

This is a profile on Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran in the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer… .

Here’s a story in the Chattanooga Times-Free Press on Georgia’s first-year chaplain Thomas Settles III. He succeeded Kevin “Chappy” Hynes, Richt’s brother-in-law… .

This is a story in the Athens Banner-Herald about Georgia’s tattoo-covered slot receiver Michael Moore.

We must force Tech to pass to beat us. If we allow them to control the line with their offense they will beat us. Our offense has the ability to dominate the Tech defense. Hopefully Willly will have a defensive game plan to stop the Tech run game. If we fail to execute, I will look for Willie and Fabres to be gone at the end of the season. On of the weakest parts of our team has been defensive ends play and special teams, Fabres is in charge of both.

CMR needs to act like a CEO of a corporation and remove non-performing individuals from you staff for the good of the team. We missed the boat on Muschamp (sp), could have had him when he left LSU with Saben, I recall that was about the same time Van Gorder left UGA. Mark needs to make a much needed change on defense.

Bobo, stop throwing that stupid alley-oop pas on the 3 or 4 yard line when you have the best tailback in the country in your backfield. That call on the first drive in the Auburn game from the 3 yard line was nothing short of dumb, all we needed was 2 yards for a 1st and 3 yds. for a TD. I guess Bobo had a massive brain Ft, and CMR ok’d the call, two brain Ft’s on the same play cost us 6 points.

Georgia hasn’t played well against the option. An aggressive pursuit oriented defense like Georgia plays is counterproductive against the option. Tech should match up well and that concerns me.

It concerns me even more that Tech is playing well on defense. There is an old adage that the thing that wins in football is defense, the running game, and special teams, in that order. Tech has an advantage in all of those. In fact, the biggest disappointment this year has been special teams, not defense. Georgia has given up a lot of points, but defensive yardage isn’t materially worse than last year.

On the other hand, Tech hasn’t played a team nearly as good as Georgia this year. We played two really bad halves this year and lost to the number 1 and number 2 teams. I don’t find that as disappointing as some do.

The last time that Tech had a coach not named Gailey, Tech defested ugag 3 out of 4. Admittedly, Tech would have lost to ugag 100 games in a row if Gailey had stayed that long, but guess what dawg fans?….Gailey is long gone. There is a new sheriff in town. You puppies are likely to find out what klimpsum, FSwho, and Miami found out. He ain’t no Chan Gailey. If Tech was 100% healthy, there is no doubt they would win this game. Unfortunately, Tech is decimated by injuries, but it didn’t seem to matter against an undisciplined Miami team, and it may not matter against an undisciplined and significantly overrtated ugag team. So get ready for the option, dawgies…because the perfect option is coming. And as always, Thank God and Greyhound that Chan Gailey is gone forever. You dawgies are really going to miss him come Saturday.

The week off is huge in my opinion. Martinez has put together some pretty good defenses when he’s had extra time to prepare. See last year’s Florida and Hawaii games as examples. I think we’ll see the best defensive performance of the year, not that that’s saying much of course.

Fear Not Dog Nation-

I will guarantee a win over the jackets. Me and the boyz have been working hard all week getting ready for the big game. Joe Cox and I have been spooning together every night in our matching Nascar PJ’s and Coach Richt has been going to the hair salon every day after practice to get his spray tan and butt cutt hairdo looking extra special. I just put an emergency call in to Soulja Boy and he’s going to be on the sideline during the game. Dog Nation we need your support. Please ask your bossses for the day off from your fast food jobs and show up for the game loud in proud in your all red attire. I only hope that UGA plays up to their potential. If they do that, this game won’t be close. Considering how the defense has played this year, though, this could be a lot closer than any of us want it to be.

Not having pressure from the DE position may actually play in our favor in this game where players need to stay in their lanes and in their assignments.

GT will get some yards and may even break a long run or two, but I think our offense will be too much for their defense this year. Could be a Big-12 type of score.

Wow, this is ignorant, even for a gnat. Has your team had THIRTEEN injuries to starters this year? No? Then STFU about injuries, you’re gonna have to find another excuse to whine about when you lose.

You puppies are likely to find out what klimpsum, FSwho, and Miami found out

So what did UVA, VT, UNC, and (lol) Gardner-Webb find out?

And don’t give me that “buhhh, we had our 3rd string QB in”. Sam Houston State put 49 on them. UGA with Logan Gray under center would beat that team by 50.

No rankings, records, hype, or anything else make any difference in a football game. Play your hearts out and leave it on the field.

I am a fan of both Georgia and Georgia Tech. I am from the Peach State and both programs are a source of great pride here. There are trash talkers on both sides… with great education and also with none. I guess that is part of the rivalry… but have some class.

I have great respect for Mark Richt and Paul Johnson. Both worked hard to get where they are… and they are both great coaches. We’ll see if Richt’s hugely talented yet undisciplined squad trumps Johnson’s overachieving team. I must say that in recent years, I have been disappointed in Richt’s propensity to recruit troublemakers who get in so much trouble off the field. Make no mistake that UGA will always bring in top talent… but I want classy teams too. I also have great respect for Tech players. Student athletes at Tech obviously have a much more difficult academic program… and I respect the drive and class that they have on and off the field. I wonder if Coach Johnson will ever be able to bring in the recruits that Richt does. Probably not, but I guess why so many like to root on the underdogs. I love this rivalry, and I hope to see a great game on Saturday.

I just wish the trash talkers would put a sock in it until after the game…

This game will probably be just like most of Georgia’s games this year. It will be excruciating to watch but at the end of the day Georgia will do just enough to win, mainly on the efforts of the Big Three (Stafford, Moreno, Greene). That’s our MO folks. There’s too much playmaking ability there for Tech and I think that’s what has seperated UGA and Tech during the 7 game win streak. We make the plays and they don’t. The gap in talent is not a huge as Tech fans would like everyone to believe. That’s one of their many pathetic after the fact excuses.

I am honestly more concerned about our bowl opponent. If you haven’t noticed we are likely headed towards the Capital One to play a pretty good Big 10 team, probably Ohio State. They are a top 10 team and there isn’t a single team in the top 10 that I would feel comfortable playing this season. We make too many dumb mistakes to beat anybody in the top 10. Ohio State’s horrible bowl streak against the SEC could come to an end at our expense. What a fitting end to a mostly forgettable season.

To M: I admit I was concerned when Tech hired coach Johnson, as I watced him at Ga. Southern and Navy. He is a great coach, and I think it was a great win for the Jackets over Miami. Forrest, every single game Georgia ever wins is lucky according to Tech fans. We’ve never won a single solitary game on our own merits to hear crybaby Tech fans tell it. If we aren’t lucky we’re just cheating. Its one or the other. It can’t be that Georgia is just a good team. No, of course not. That is never an acceptable explanation to Tech fans. There is obviously a conspiracy throughout college football to help Georgia win football games. Hell, half the teams we play are probably throwing the game for us!!!

Tech fans are so easy to hate. I will have no sympathy for you when No. 8 comes knocking in a couple of days and you end up in some December Toilet Bowl. Georgia Tech football deserves better fans. You are a disgrace.

Hey MoDawg from MoDawg

Read some earlier posts where a couple of Techsters were accusing Coach Richt of having a “sleazy style of coaching” and used “encouraging childish displays on the other teams’ field” as their argument. TWLOCP is not played on “the other teams’ field”. That was my point. Now to your ridiculous remark that “Richt encouraged everyone to dance in the end zone”…it’s obvious you are another Techster or some Gator who trolls the UGA blog to throw in your little jabs. Richt did not encourage the entire team to celebrate the TD. Besides, Urban Cryer threw his little temper tantrum by calling the timeouts late in the blowout, so I guess we’re even? (Now is when you start tossing the score in…).

Have fun!

Oh well - another year of coulda woulda shoulda from the Dawgs. Pre-Season the “Dawgs” were deep and some even guaranteed an undefeated season, now the excuses pile on.

Hey MoDawg and CryMeARiver

Neither of your posts have anything to do with the original assertion that Richt has a “sleazy style of coaching”. If you’d like to get back to that, please feel free to provide examples. Otherwise, please continue enjoying Florida’s victory this year. Florida deserves to enjoy the win and has really come on after the loss to Ole Miss. That’s what good teams do. Florida’s success is deserved, and I don’t want to detract from that at all. Congratulations! The media and a lot of delusional Dawg fans were the cause for the preseason hype, not all Dawg fans.

Why the blame game?

Georgia will run the ball more. This will be a low scoring game. If it gets to be a defensive game Tech wins, the Tech troops are better conditioned and the offense lets them off the field longer.

This team and football program is the most underachieving program ever in college football period. Cant put away teams like South Carolina,Vandy and Kentucky. Next year will be another year of Fools Gold for the mutts too. Willie and Boo Boo aint got a clue on making adjustments. Tech 31 UGA 20

has everyone forgotten that tech’s defense is top 15 in the nation? thats what worries me…i mean 3 out of the four d linemen will go in the first three rounds of the draft.//

Well, Wild Bill, you’re right about OU’s bowl playing the past few years. As a fan of a perrenial power, it always hurts when your team has seasons that don’t end the way you want them to.

But the sad fact is, at UGA, you’ve had 1 season end the way you wanted to and that was back in 1980. I don’t have a problem with that, it’s just gets tiring to hear, year after year, sad-sack GA fans pretend GA has some great football team. It’s a good team many years - this one included. But UGA isn’t a powerhouse. It’s never been a powerhouse. And I’d say under Richt, it never will be a powerhouse.

Georgia actually will play good defense for a change. Play the gaps and use collapsing DEs. We cant rush the passer but we can do that. If our DEs get up field and seal off the QB,its over. LBs must play honest and not get mis-directed. Its not that hard just different. My fear is that Richt will fail to get them ready emotionally. He does not totally understand this rivalry yet.Look for Ellerbe to have a big day for a change.

Richt does not totally understand this rivalry yet? What planet have you been on for the past 7 years? Good grief son.

tech is much better this year than I had predicted. I thought it would take a full year before Johnson’s system would start to take hold and they are way ahead of schedule.

UGA has the more talented team, there is no question about that. UGA also has a huge advantage of having had a bye this past weekend while tech had a tough competitor in the Hurricanes.

UGA’s special teams and defense are not living up to expectations but I think tech will have a tough time stopping us. Having a bye very late in the season to prepare for an unusual offensive scheme in tech will prove to be too much for the yellowjackets to overcome.

UGA has everything going for it heading into this contest. Playing at home, more talented players across the board, having played better teams during the year, and a bye week before the game when the opponent did not have one. Both teams have been hit hard by injury.

tech does have revenge (7 losses in a row) which is a pretty good thing to have on their side of the ledger.

If tech prevails, UGA will simply have been outcoached.

Rennie Currain has a bonzai field day in this one with 18 tackles…Knowshon struggles to 90 yards with little blocking….and Dawgs win on some mirracle AJ Green play in the last minute…Throw out the stats in this one because there is simply too much emotion in this game…Dawgs will prevail but only after a sideline mutany in which CMR takes both the O and D clipboards at half and sends the two clowns (Bozo and Willie) to the showers!! Actually as hard as it will be to stomach a GT win it may not be that bad if it results in the Two Clowns getting a free ride out of town…Saturday can’t get here soon enough!!!

Nice article by the Florida reporter. Hell, I should be a reporter. I’ve been saying the same thing for a month — Crier will leave UF for ND as soon as Charlie is sent packing. UM is already pimping his OC and DC for HC openings. Timmy Teblow took his “victory” lap around The Swamp after the tough win against The Citadel. He knows his daddy is leaving and he won’t be able to cut it as a QB in the SEC if he’s not running the UM version of the spread. Percy and Spikes will go after that NFL coin as well when UM moves up north.

Jeff Dantzler on 960 The Ref in Athens brought up a great point on the radio this afternoon. Look at the some of the best defensive players in the SEC and country……Eric Berry, Eric Norwood, Jasper Brinkley, Cameron Heyward……..all of these guys were heavily recruited by Georgia.

My question is why would you want to go to UT or Carolina over Georgia? John Chavis is a damn fine DC and BVG was going to be the DC in Carolina (for a day or two). Is it coaching or is it something else that is keeping the kids from coming here on the defensive side of the ball? Not that the kids we have are not good. But could you imagine our secondary with Eric Berry? Our D-Line with Eric Norwood and Cameron Heyward?

Georgia scores early and often on Saturday. And Willie’s defense slows the Tech option down — they don’t stop it but they keep it in check. Georgia 42, Tech 27

No, we don’t…His O is a throwback to a day gone by. Successful..? To a degree because it’s one nobody has to face but once or twice in a college career unless you’re ACC opponents or UGA. I wouldn’t want to see it Atop Rocky. For longetivity sake and the Full Monty, give me what Richt, Cut, Stoops, Carroll or Mack Brown has to offer…

As bad as VA Tech is this year, they will beat VA which makes the GA Tech year a close but no cigar attempt. Dawgs, we’re worried about a team that lost to VA, VA Tech and NC (a combined 19-14) while we have suffered losses to two teams that are 1 and 2 in the polls and 21-1 overall…are you kidding me!!!

Tech fans need to be ready for their annual let down.

Dwyer is averaging more than 120yds per game over the past 5 games which included 3 of the better Ds of the ACC, although I do admit that they aren’t as good as some of the Ds in the SEC. UGA does NOT have one of the better SEC Ds this year and there is no way UGA can stop Dwyer. To me the only question is whether the Tech secondary can find a way to stop Stafford and Green. If not, UGA may never have to punt…

Could have used the Bailey Kid from Darien at DE too. Just couldn’t overcome Miami telling him he could play LB. We have lost a few recruits that we needed several years ago, but it seems in the past couple of years, this staff has done a great job identifying the Need and going out to get it early.

Gen Neyland: God forbid you get Paul Johnson…your fate will be sealed for 8-4 average years from this day forward. Look for the possibility of bringing John Gruden back to TN if you can ante up…otherwise go west young man and pick up Chris Petersen.

GT Rich……ever notice the teams who had success running the ball on UGA — Bama, Florida, UK, LSU, Auburn all have big, physical OL’s? Tech’s OL is small in comparison to those mentioned — granted that is primarily due to injuries sustained by Tech this year. As with most games, the winner will have better play up front. Tech is nasty in their blocking schemes…..almost dirty……as they know they are undersized and try to go low on the DL guys to block them b/c they cannot beat them straight up. Let’s see how many chop blocks get called Saturday!

Paul johnson won more than 8 a year for 5 of his 6 years at navy….so after he wins 11 his first year(UGA,ACCCG, and Orange Bowl) imagine the future. He will pull in top classes after he beats UGA…because the state of georgia has alot of talent. They will want to play for us and win a national title…which PJ already has two. You cant deny the fact that he is a great coach, and has done so much with so little…unlike Richt.

Wow this comment kind of blew me away…I figured Rennie could dismantle just about any formation thrown at him… I still bet he plays one hell of a game but his comments do leave me a bit concerned….

“The weather didn’t bother me as much as getting used to that offense,” Bulldogs linebacker Rennie Curran said after practice. “It got frustrating… . You realize an offense like that is something you have to be persistent with and keep grinding with and not get frustrated with.”

If thw dawgs are gased after the first few sseries (like all prior games this year) Dwyer & Company could have a field day…Anyone know what the over/under is for stupid UGA personel fouls…

I’d rather have kept Fulmer and gotten rid of Clawson and AD Hamlton. As far as Johnson going far with his O, he needs to do it before schools in the big leagues gather a bit of film. I recall the Air Force team that came to Knoxville in what, 06’-07’ (?) and ran some kind of option attack that UT had trouble with. UT pulled out a 31-30 win, I believe the margin was… When you run this set against bigger and faster D’s, they will catch up eventually…The D line has got to blow it up from the snap and LB’s gotta cover keys…Watch your legs, O-Line…

BE#3: We don’t need big lard butt linemen for our type offense. We knock ‘em off their pins & we are gone. Of course the drawback is the zebras don’t know a cut block from a chop block and a preditermined to call it a couple of times because the the oposing coach demands it pregame. I predict this game, sadly, will be determined by bad calls.

Moreno might be up for the Doak WAlker Award but as far as the NFL goes I don’t think he can handle the punishment after seeing him take himmself out of the Ga. - Fl. game. I lost a lot of respect for him at that time. It was like ‘coach I’m only going to play when it’s an easy defense that I can run over’. The ol saying that the NFL stands for Not For Long when your a wuss.
