UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Bulldogs seem to lack heart

What’s up, UGA bloggers? I’m actually writing this on Monday night. I was tabbed for jury duty this week and am trying to do my civic duty. Got to go back Tuesday but I’ll try to keep the blog updated the rest of the week. Thanks to Tim Tucker for Monday’s nice post and your thoughtful responses.

At the moment I’m listening to the Georgia-Loyola basketball game on the radio. Not looking too good as the Bulldogs have fallen behind by 13 — oops, make that 15 — in the second half. That’s pretty awful if that stands up. They’re still without Trey Thompkins but that’s laying a big-time egg on the road. It might be a good thing they don’t draw Purdue afterall. Boilermakers killed in the first game.

Meanwhile, here we are in the last off week of the season for the football team. For the most part the Bulldogs’ fate has been sealed. It’s highly unlikely they won’t play in the Capital One Bowl regardless of what happens in the Georgia Tech game. SEC and national championship talk seems a distant memory, doesn’t it?

Can’t say I’m surprised the Dogs lost two games. If you go back and look at some of our exchanges before the season started you’ll see I thought that was a distinct possibility. But how and how bad they lost those games was definitely not something I expected. And I thought they might dominate a few that they haven’t.

It’s been a strange season. Certainly as disappointing a 9-2 year I’ve ever encountered from the standoint of Georgia’s fans. I expect a full-blown riot should the Bulldogs lose to Georgia Tech in the season finale.

Again, I think it’s the “how” more than the “what.” Getting manhandled by Alabama and Florida just shouldn’t happen to a team this talented. Then having to fight and struggle against overmatched opponents in the last two games, while still making the kinds of mistakes you expect to see in the season’s first month, didn’t provide any salve.

I don’t share a lot of the views I see here about firing this coach and that one. The majority of this staff has been together to win 81 games over eight seasons so far. That’s some pretty tall cotton. And the injury issues have been significant. I just think this might be one of those cases where the players just don’t have the chemistry and/or heart, if you will, that great teams must have. Perhaps they’ll prove me wrong in the last couple of games but that’s what I see.

Anyway, Dogs still way down in Indiana. I’ll leave you with some links:

Here’s a report on Georgia coach Mark Richt’s speech to the Macon Bulldog Club from David Hale’s Bulldogs Blog… .

You guys calling for a college football playoff surely must of enjoyed the interview of President-elect Barack Obama on 60 Minutes Sunday night… .

Florida’s Urban Meyer is pumping some of his assistant coaches for head coaching jobs… .

The talk of Auburn’s six wins in a row already is grating on Alabama coach Nick Saban and there’s still over a week and a half to go before the game.

Just leave it at “Bulldogs lack heart” and you have it right!

Chip, to me, one of our biggest issues is not having a single De that can bring any pressure. Do we have anyone, waiting in the wings that can provide this? How did Toby Jackson look? Any redshirts? BTW, eliminating the foolish penalties and unforced TO’s would also help.

Also, I couldn’t agree more with our next Pres on the need for a playoff (among other things) but there will be many here who will see it as some “socialist” ploy… Imagine a rolling of the eyes icon, right here.

I don’t agree with the “don’t have heart” headline. No heart = 6+ losses. I don’t agree about coaching changes. Anybody watching every game live and up close can see there are continuous problems on defense. Take the week off Chip for civic duty, these same old blogging topics need a break. 2 weeks of negativity before Tech is useless.

It seems this week is the time for all of the reporters and columnists to jump on the bandwagon criticizing UGA even more than ever. I think your headline is unfair. These guys are college kids giving their all; they have very long and busy days of weight-lifting, class, meetings, film to watch, practice, then studying. They have been on the road 4 weeks in a row. Even if the SEC is down this year, that is still a tough schedule. I began going to UGA games in 1980. I have supported the team all these years and continue to do so! I think it’s awful that you reporters don’t seem to have an original thought and all seem to follow the “crowd” of criticizing UGA with a record that most teams would love to have.

Chip, I don’t think it’s a stretch to question the heart of this year’s team. While I’m certainly not a fringe fan that calls for firings after every game, I have to admit I’m concerned with the 4 year trend we’re seeing now with regards to the points per game allowed. Disturbing.

By gg

November 18, 2008 8:48 AM | Link to this

I think a big part of the problem starts with DISCIPLINE.

Somehow that has been lost in this team. It started to show up in the offseason, and then carried over to their performance on the field.

Discipline doesn’t miss assignments, doesn’t lose concentration, and doesn’t get penalized the length of the field in every game. A lack of discipline gets penalized in the red zone on offense and on crucial plays on defense. A lack of discipline blows blocking assignments on punts, coverage assignments on pass defense, misplays punt returns, and doesn’t get loft on chip shot field goals. And I put most of this on the players, but the coaches need to recognize it and coach it when it’s not there in the players.

By Sautee Dawg

November 18, 2008 8:52 AM | Link to this

Ramble ON sorry not defensive, justnot buying into the team not having a brain. Penalties are a problem and dealing with them is even a bigger problem. Should do like Coach Spurrier, when you commit a penalty don’t even look over to the sideline just come on off the field and take a few plays off. Seems to work for him.

By Will

November 18, 2008 9:17 AM | Link to this

Chip, I wouldn’t say this team doesn’t have heart. If they didn’t we would have lost the last 2 games.

With that said, we’re just really not that good of a team. Our offense is one of the best but our D and special teams are horrible. We have the weakest pass rush in college football and every team knows it. We are what we are and that’s the way it goes. I would like to tell Willie however that you had better go out and recruit some speed at those D-End positions. The bulky, slow, short and stumpy guys are not working. Look at Florida and look at the speed those guys have at that position. You have to get someone to rush the passer. Also, pray that Marcus Washington at LB can play next year!

By Lynne

November 18, 2008 9:26 AM | Link to this

To Pago Flyer: I doubt if you had to do any of that. How many other teams in the SEC had 4 road games in a row? Yes I wish we had played better this year. I am just saying don’t be so critical; try to support your team. These aren’t pro players. I also am criticizing the reporters because they all seem to follow the same theme each week. They should at least try to have an original thought for their blog or column.

To improve their “heart” Richt needs to come up with new penalties for his players to commit on the field after a good play, to get the team “fired up!” How about an intentional block in the back after the play by a bunch of players at once!

This team is what it is. They simply aren’t as good as everyone thought they would be. It happens. They’ve got their problems but I haven’t seen anything that tells me lack of heart is one of them. They haven’t given up on the season. If they had we’d have lost the last two games. They didn’t give up when Alabama went up 31-0. And they aren’t going to give up now. I’m tired of the media trashing these guys like they are low life pros or something. We’ve heard it all season. I hope they all pull an Arian Foster and stop talking to you. Maybe then you’ll actually do some REAL work.

They call them “coaches” because their job is to teach, to instill discipline,to mentor. A team without heart is a poorly coached team, especially if the talent is there. Richt is a product of Miami, and FSU where penalties and lack of discipline on and off the field were accepted. Not until we lose to a Ga. Tech or Ky or Auburn will our coaches figure out heart starts with them….and then only because they are job scared.

I’d hate to lose to Tech or a bowl team, but a loss might have a silver lining.

Maybe not chemistry Chip but “No Heart”? No heart means they fold against KY and Auburn. I believe the chemistry part has more to do with the youth on the O-line and the lack of a vocal leader like a Kelin Johnson or the steadiness of the two Seniors on the O-line. Expectations for this season were built off the pieces that graduated last year. I know we had the weapons with Stafford and Moreno on O but the D really missed KJ and Howard. (Not to mention the injuries) You know the program has stepped up when 9-2 is a downer. Could be worse like getting beat at home by App State or having a talent loaded team and get beat at home by Stanford. Those are teams that have “No Heart”!!!

By terry

It is like a broken record.Stafford overthrows wide open recievers, soft zone in 3rd and long, never a senior offensive line, it goes on and on….Somebody tell CMR that a good defense is an attacking offense.that should be his philosophy!!!not managing the game, maybe he is to nice?Next year will be watershed year for CMR.p.s. fire bobo and willie !!!

It is a joke to question the hearts of these players or coaches. The last two games would have been lost if they did not have heart. I do believe that sometimes the parts just don’t fit together just right. So, chemistry to some degree could be a problem. Anyway, not the year we wanted, but 9-2 is still pretty darn good, especially with the injuries. Go Dawgs!

By RAMBLE ON!!!

November 18, 2008 9:44 AM | Link to this

haha, you SEC blowhards keep talking about your schedule while the rest of the nation just laughs. One really good team UF and three decent teams UA (UF will show UA is just decent, if they make it by Awbarn), UGAG, and LSU.

What if UGAG was in the Big 12, 7-4, Texas Tech would post 60 on the fleabags.

GT would be 9-2 with UGAG’s current schedule.

Miami is the better team than UGAG, first GT must take care of them. We play defense in the ACC, something the SEC only wishes they could do.

The truth hurts I know, that’s why this season is so painful for the fleabags. It’s only fitting. The mutts get beat at home Nov. 29th. The team with a brain and heart wins. HA!

By Georgia Tech=JOKE

November 18, 2008 9:46 AM | Link to this

JacketsRule, I have an even better idea. Maybe a UGA player should intentionally try an injure a Georgia Tech player and get thrown out of the game. Kind of like one of your precious little perfect angel football players did last year against us. What do you say you self-righteous pinhead?

GEORGIA WILL NEVER WIN ALL OF THE BIG FOUR(FL, AUB, TENN, GT) IN ONE SEASON THEREFORE WILL NEVER GAIN ENOUGH RESPECT NATIONALLY TO PLAY FOR A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. CMR HAS LOST TO AT LEAST ONE OF THOSE TEAMS EVERY YEAR, TO ME, THEY LACK HEART AT SOME POINT OF THE SEASON EVERY YEAR, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO WHEN YOU ARE GOING AGAINST YOUR BIGGEST RIVALS. THEY MUST FIND A WAY TO WIN ALL OF THOSE FOUR GAMES AND WHEN THEY DO I THINK THEY EXECUTE LIKE THEY SHOULD AND BLOWOUT THE TEAMS THEY ARE MORE TALENTED THAN.

I’m the first JB, I think…….anyway, Florida and Meyer are not going away. I don’t like Meyer, but he is a pretty darn good coach. If some coach’s don’t change in Athens, something needs to. Richt will always be watching the SEC championship game from the stands if he can’t figure it out. I think this years game should not be the sole judge, as last year win should be. I agree with an earlier blogger, the trend is not good, especially on the defensive side of the ball. We need MORE speed also. We scare no one on special teams. Richt has the talent to win 9-10 games every year. I think not having the team ready against Bama and Gators and getting blown out on National TV is what all Dawg fans are irked about. Just slipping by the worst Auburn team in 10 year doesn’t help.

By timthebrave

It has been a disappointing season because of the high expectations. In reality if we play better against Fl and somehow win that game we are in perfect position to win SEC and National Championship. I give credit to FL in that game. They got good bounces and calls go their way in the first half and built on that momentum to beat us badly. I’m sick of the b*** and moaning. It is getting OLD. The biggest problem with the bulldogs this year is that their interior lines are not getting the job done. Last year we lead the sec in sacks and it seemed that on every play we were in the back field harrassing a qb. This year, they have tons of time to throw the ball. Other teams running backs seem to have huge holes especially in our big games fl and bama. The offensive line has played a little better. Injuries to the two best o lineman that ewe have really hurt. Those 4 yards Knowshon is getting this year, they were 10 and 15 yards last year. I am not sure what is in the cupboard for defensive lineman next year, but I will say that if these same guys are playing next year, i hope that there is someone coaching them up this summer.Toby and Abry should be great additions. D Tyson was a 5 star recruit on the defensive line and I never heard his name being called. He seems a little soft for me. Hopefully they get better. I think Mathew and Knowshon will come back next year, but in order for Ga to compete for a national title, they must beat florida and I am not sure if thatwill happen if Tebow returns, which I am sure he will.

How many teams in America would do better than UGA - playing LSU, FL, KY and AU consecutively on the road over 4 weeks? Who out there would have gone 4 and 0 during that stretch???

That’s right - Nobody would. Going 3-1 is about the best anyone could realistically expect. Give these guys a break. Tech loses one lineman and all of a sudden finds they aren’t as effective as earlier this year. UGA loses 4 lineman (not to mention numerous Defensive Injuries) and are expected to roll through their schedule unscathed, and not only win - but blow everyone in their path out. This team is 9-2 - they won at ASU, at South Carolina, at LSU, at Auburn and at KY (I seem to remember KY gave Alabama all they could handle a few weeks ago.) They aren’t perfect - they aren’t the best team in the nation, their special teams are horrible, they make boneheaded penalties and shoot themselves in the foot - all true. But considering that just about everything that could go wrong this year has gone wrong - and they sit here 9-2 (and not 3-7 like UT) tells me this program, the players, and the coaches deserve our respect (and support if you’re a fan of UGA). So many other teams would have had these same chips fall and be sitting here with no bowl possibilities. Dawgs are still in the hunt for an 11 win season.

Get off their back people.

Ramble On, Sagarin still has UGA with the 6th toughest schedule in the nation, and its updated every week.

But Tech did beat Gardner-Webb of the scary BIG SOUTH conference, a team that had 49 points hung on them by the power house Sam Houston State, it took an act of god for tech to score 10 points and hold of Gardners vaunted offense.

The way I look at it injuries hurt us early, we are a young team that is still missing some key bigtime players at certain positions(DE,TE,and CB)! We had a tough schedule this year, and expectations were really high, but to say we had lack of HEART blows me away. Lack of heart would have cost us losses at SC, Vandy, KU and AU.

Chip a few years ago one of those sports talk stations in town called out Tech’s basketball players and Paul Hewitt called into defend them. We’ll see if Mark Richt does the same for his players.

I’m a little nervous going into next week’s game in Athens, I feel we take care of business vs. the U but am shocked to see 8,000 tickets remain and Bobby Dodd will no where near sold out for an ACC game with such national significance.

I think our fans are still mad at sneaking a 3-point victory out over Gardner-Webb and dropping the golden egg when we had the chance to put the ACC Coastal away. I realize there’s an outside chance we could still win it but one thing our team doesn’t seem to have is luck on its side.

I’m hoping for Meineke Car Car Bowl instead of another trip to Boise for Humanitarian Bowl against undefeated Boise State, that one scares me and blue turf hurts my eyes. The snowmobiling is great out there however.

One of the problems I see is there just seems to be a lack of fire on the team. There just isn’t that same GATA attitude that there was this time last season. We definitely have the talent, but if you go back and look at game film of the FL, AUB, GT, and Hawaii games last year and how they played and more importantly how they were on the sidelines as compared to how they have been the this year, there is a HUGE difference. We have plenty of talent, but lack a killer instinct. When you look at our players we have as much talent as any team in the country, but sometimes it seems the players are waiting on the guy next to them to do something to make a difference, rather than looking at themselves and each one saying I’M going to do something to make a difference. They also need to attack more on defense instead of sitting back and trying to keep everything in front of them. Hopefully the coaches will go back and look at how we ended 07 vs 08 and make the appropriate adjustments. Would love to see us reach out to Pollack and offer him a coaching job, I think he could bring some of that fire and passion back to the sidelines that has been missing.

Chip, remember they are all guilty until proven innocent. Just tell them that you are a firm believer in capitol punishment and that “an eye for an eye” is your mantra in life.

Chip, no heart? is a bit harsh. I agree with the poster up there that said no heart would have given up against Auburn and KY. That D stuck it out and did waht it had to do. No heart would be Knowshon not rushing for a buck and a qtr in the next two games after the Florida game. No heart would be Stafford not throwing for over 300. The team has heart and all of it will be on the field for the smack down of the insects Nov 29th.

Who is going to the Capitol One bowl. Isn’t that typically #3 SEC. If Florida wins Dec 6th wouldn’t Bama get an at large for BCS game? Vice versa?

By knoxdawg

November 18, 2008 10:43 AM | Link to this

I disagree about the HEART issue. No heart would have meant losses to Vanderbilt, Auburn, Kentucky. The defense did make the plays needed to win those games. The team as a whole did not show up against Alabama and I think the long trip to Arizona the week before factored into it. Not to mention Alabama is a very good football team. Florida game was close at the half and failing to score right before the half took the wind out of us.

Being 9-2 in a league like the SEC is an outstanding year. Only Alabama and Florida have better records and one of them in all likelyhood will play in the NC game.

What has hurt UGA this year is untimely penalties, untimely turnovers and no pass rushing defensive ends. Kentucky and Auburn both are not in the game if we get any kind of pass rush forcing throws to soon or sacking the QB. When a QB has all day to survey the field he will find an open receiver prolonging the drive.

This team is a blue collar team, alot of workhorses but no over powering stars. Moreno, Stafford, Green and Massoqui all have star ability but the young, injured line hurts their abilitites. Coach Searles deserves a BIG raise. Coach Bobo needs to look at his play calling in the Red Zone. Moreno needs the ball in his hands more often inside the 20.

Don’t see stars on defense except for Curran and he can’t do it all. Need more from the d-line but injuries have hurt that area. They have given their all and played hard. Need a big hitter at safety.

By CobbDawg

CHIP: can you ask about Dannell Ellerbe? The last two games he looks like he is playing at about 50%. No speed whatsoever and no ability to change direction. That knee must be awful. And we must be hurting at LB if we have to have him out there in that condition. We are in trouble against Tech if he does not improve.

By murfdawg

RAMBLE ON——Get your slide rule out and see if you can figure out this equation. Stafford plus Green multiplied by Moreno divided by the square root of Bobo times the cosin of a young ol plus the heart and desire of a Dawg that refuses to lose to the 11th power and you should get 63 points scored on TT with a td to Green with 2 seconds left.

So you think GT could beat Central Mich, LSU,AU,Vandy and KY? What do you think UGA would be against your schedule?

No heart would have been to fold up shop after the UF game after the goals for the season were lost. Jsut face the facts that this team was beat by a 2 teams that were from top to bottom better than us this year.Playing/Coaching/Preperation. Top to bottom. This team has heart. It has lacked the collective complete game this year from top to bottom. Last year we put it together for that great run. This year it didn’t happen. Thats the way it goes some years. Tip your hat to the teams that beat us and move on. Quit looking for something to point the finger at or blame. Jsut accpet it and move on. Regardless of what you say about 81 wins, the defense and special teams have been paricularly atrocious this year AND have had periodic collapses in the past, (Tennessee, West Virginia, e.g.). With talent like this, the blame has to fall on the coaches, specifically, Willie Martinez and John Fabris. As long as these coaches remain at Georgia, we will not win it all.

Mark Richt is a wonderful human being and an absolute credit to UGA; but, he has to be the CEO of the team. That means he has to get rid of the dead wood which is dragging the team down. If he fails in that, his employment should also be strongly reconsidered.

the secondary. it’s the secondary, stupid!

overall, they do look “flat” for lack of a better term. compared to last years pumped up last half dogs, just flat. they finally put together the dream offense, best QB in the land, fabulous RB, the best WRs I’ve seen in decades, and it seems to stop there.

Georgia reflects the demeanor of the coach. Richt is very calm and shows very little emotion. His players feed off of that, i.e., no emotion. The one time he was bold and fired up his team was in Jax last year and that carried the Dawgs to a great finish and a preseason No. 1 ranking.

Richt needs an Erk Russell or Will Muschamp type that brings a lot of energy and emotion to the playing field.

I am on base with you about the problem being “how” The Dawgs lost two games (so far). Projected to be a tough schedule, the only two tough teams we played blew us off the field.

Chip, you need to re-read your own post. If The Dawgs lack heart (I agree) then it’s a coaching fault.

Or do you agree with Richt that it’s the players’ fault!?

It’s laziness. Watch the attempts to tackle. When you reach out to arm tackle someone, it’s b/c your feet have not moved and you did not get in position to actually make a tackle. Same way with grabbing a facemask….if you are lined up square with someone, you don’t have to grab a facemask. When you get burned by a WR and have to grab their jersey, you’ve been beat b/c you did not get your feet moving. Laziness may be a problem due to the read and react attitude. If you are the aggressor, you eliminate the tendancy to be lazy. It’s obvious that the same thing has been going on in practice with no punishment. Even players were commenting on guys laughing and cutting up when people made mistakes. All of this goes back to coaching. I’m not one who’s gonna say fire this guy or fire that guy, but a change in attitude is a must. That doesn’t mean that people need to be fired, but they need to have a fire lit under their a$$ — players included. GO DAWGS. GATA. Beat the damn nerds.

The breakdown in discipline for this Georgia team began when Richt decided to violate the rules of the game and send the team on the field to celebrate against Florida. If the coach won’t follow the rules, don’t be surprised if the players take his example.

Agree if heart was the issue, we are sitting at 4 losses right now. Chemistry? I would say it’s been more of an issues of Geometry. I don’t understand why the need to put the Bama and Fl game under such subjective scrutiny to reveal the mysterious answers. It’s right there on tape, what happened, play by play.

Nobody opinion is going to change on Coach Martinez, but anyone calling for Coach Fabris’ head, who fields some of the best units in the nation every year since he has been here, has zero credibility.

Throw Carolina into the mix as one of the 4. If we had beat Carolina last year, we’d have been playing for the SEC Championship and the shot to play in the BCS Championship. Carolina is a must win. It’s the first SEC game of the year and it’s in our own division. And as long as The Ol’ Ball Coach is there, it’s gonna be one of the toughest games of the year.

As for the Basketball team…. it’s tough to have heart when your coach kicks the best players off the team consistantly and has generally failed to provide a consistant winner in his tenure, but hey let’s give him another 5 years to be mediocre in a phenominally easy state to recruit in.

As for football, all the running in the world all the punishment, doesn’t amount to anything if the players don’t stop committing stupid penalties. Athletic yes of course. Football smart? Probably the weakest minded team in the SEC if not the country. Penalties can be a result of poor dicipline, but they can also expose good athletes with bad fundamentals who are out of position constantly and or over run the play or simply free lance and don’t perform the way in which the play is designed.

I don’t think the problem with this team is completely coaching. I think youthful ignorance combined with lack of some key playmakers has been what has harmed this team.

That said, in a down year (injuries; dicipine problems etc.) They could win 10 or 11 games and they’ve played tremendously sloppy football. This program is still in a great position of relavance. I know people are upset, but the big picture is not a bad one as far as the football program is concerned.

Some of the people writing in today also wrote in before the season began. Below are some of the pre-season comments:

“The dawgs have matured and will play like a mature team does. Watch out for those hairy dawgs as the will be a hunkering down.”

“Tennessee? Florida? Lsu? USC? Who cares about these pansies.”

“The Dawgs are easily the best team in the country going into next season and should be ranked #1. I think UGA will go 14-0 next year, with the only tough game at LSU. UT and UF won’t have anything next year to challenge UGA. I predict UGA beats USC easily in the Orange Bowl next year for the national title. No way USC can defend Moreno and Stafford, two superstars. UF—look for a blowout.”

“UGA will not only win all their games in ‘08 but dominate every game. Things are VERY different now that the team will be fired up for EVERY game and I can’t wait to destroy UT, South Carolina, UF, and everyone else that stands in our way next year, the year of the dawg!”

“Georgia returns all of their best players, most of them being freshman and sophmores the recent year, and will prove on the field (with the toughest schedule in the country) that they are number 1.”

“Finished 2007 #2 and start 2008 #1 gonna be a year of “DOGGIE STYLE” - get used to it haters!”

“Mark it down: UGA blows out florida and tennessee next year and easily wins the SEC, then blows out USC for all the marbles baby!! GA will be unbeatable next year—-way too much talent for everyone else in the country to deal with.”

“The only team in the country that can possibly match up with UGA next year is USC, and they don’t have the defense to stop Moreno and Stafford. When they play in the title game, I think UGA wins that game by 10-12 points, easy. UGA is going to be the team to beat in the U.S. in the next few years, with all the talent they have and are bringing in.”

Dwag fan all of my life, but did not believe the above possible under the current coachimg staff. Good dance moves though.

I wonder if some of the marquee players are approaching games in a business fashion. I was attending a wedding and a former Bulldog lineman was at the wedding as well. He was All-Sec and drafted by the Colts. He was a starter and eventually retired due to an injury. At the reception, I asked him what it felt like to play Florida, Auburn, Tech etc., and if emotions were high. He told me that he and a few others had no feeling one way or another about who they played. He stated he played, and others, to only get better to go to the next level(NFL). He stated the hype and excitement was only for the fans. I felt like kicking his a*, but I knew how that would turn out. So, are some of them sandbagging? Could be.

9_2 is not surprising at this point, especially based on the injuries we’ve had. I’m not talking just about the people we lost for the season, we had Ellerbe and Sutherland out for key games too.

We have had two bad halves this year, the first half against Alabama and the second half against Florida. Those are two of the top 3 teams in the country. It was Alabama’s top performance of the year by far according to the former Alabama player I talked with yesterday, and Florida appears to be the best team in the country. Auburn is always tough and a one point win there is nothing to be ashamed of.

Actually “get so bad” only applies to a few plays in the past couple of game. Hasn’t been that bad all this year. Even in the AU game if you break it down, we did punt them inside the 20 3 times, and smoothered the top KO return man in the SEC. Our freshman just plain kicked the FG too low, and let a KO go OOB in the wind, (as did thier guy). Our PUP is still 4th best in the league behind only upperclassmen.

Miller now has one fumble (battling the wind and sun) to offset his TD return.

The KY game might have been the worst game in 8 yrs for this coach. On that particular play you asked about, just looked like a player who momentarily wasn’t sure what to do on a strange play. Should have, BUT I would rather have him run it out than give up points, in a case where he wasn’t sure. Right decision for the wrong reason, or wrong decision for the right reason? In short, he made a mistake. I’d be willing to bet he was reminded pretty quickly of the rule.

We still are the #5 punt return team in the nation.

I know CMR’s mantra is ‘a win is a win is a win’ and he justifiably pointed out after the game that it was our 30th win in an opponents stadium in 8 years. That is fantastic! Congratulations to him and to the Dawgs on going to 9-2.

However, I am not as sure a win is a win is a win in our case. We are clearly living on the edge week after week. We were very fortunate to win the last two weeks over vastly inferior opponents. Sure, if we were 11-0 we could say everyone is saving their best game for us. But we cannot be that blind. Auburn’s extremely anemic offense did its best job of the year against us.

The players and staff have to share the blame. Today players were finger pointing on the field; that’s not Georgia football and uncharacteristic of a Richt team. The players that aren’t playing with that ‘Us against the world’ attitude and those losing focus shouldn’t play.

Finally, we have to trust CMR’s judgment. There is NO ONE better to coach the Dawgs, but he cannot be as passive about our problems as he seems. I would love for him to show a little fire and really believe it would reassure us a bit. It is up to him to make the best personnel decisions in the interest of the football team. The Team, the university and the fans deserve no less.

Win or lose they are my Dawgs, but they are killing me with the continued UNDERACHIEVING!

Go Dawgs!

Chip,

That’s what I posted after the last game. I agree with your comments completely. This seems to be a deep seated problem and not one as easily corrected as clock management.

We like to point to the fact that we have the same players coming back in ‘08 and ‘09. Well it didn’t help us in ‘08! There is no chip on the shoulder attitude that has to be to compete in football. They look like a business like baseball team. This team is playing without any heart. They won 9 games on talent alone including the last 2 games. The lack of heart seems to be getting worse and will likely cost them in the bowl or GT game or heaven forbid, both.

Until UGA figures out it’s a middle of the road team, you’re going to be disappointed every year. And with Bama looking like they’re back on the road to winning and FL a yearly powerhouse, it could be a long time before UGA gets to the SEC Champ game. It’s back to the future for the Dawgs…

Kentucky and Auburn are not “vastly inferior” opponents. They are SEC football teams that are either A) well coached in the case of Kentucky and B) very talened in the case of Auburn. Georgia was not going to be “vastly superior” to any team in the SEC this year no matter how well we played. If you thought that you are on drugs. It is the SEC people. Get a clue. Other teams in the SEC have lots of talent too. Other teams in the SEC have good coaches too. It was NEVER going to be easy!!! Based on some of your comments I get the feelign that some of you expected us to win every game by at least 30 points this year. You need to pull your heads out of your rears. That was never going to happen. We could have played the best footall in the nation and that was still not going to happen. Kentucky gave the #1 team in the nation all it could handle this year. They beat the BCS Champion the year before. Yet some of you are simply offended that our team did not blow them away by 30. Put down the crack pipe people!!! They play with ZERO energy, ZERO enthusiasm, ZERO HEART AND SOUL. A lot of that comes from within their organization, not there selves. Our Coach stands there like a Gn statue, devoid of any emotion. I mean, I know church is the next morning, but this is Divison 1 College d*n football, and this WAS the pre-season #1, and the hottest team ending 2007’s season. We returned 17 of 21 starters, and 1 of those 4 “losses” was replaced by Moreno. WTF has happened?!

Yeah, that’s a great way to put it. THEY HAVE NO D**N HEART. We will not EVER be anything but an SEC wannabe, until these men start playing like they love football, instead of playing like they have lace on their panties.

To Quaildog and others, Do you comprehend how much it would take to “fold” against Kentucky and Auburn?? And this “A win is a win” garbage must stop. Do you mean to tell me if you were an 18 year old tennis player going up against a 12 year old and you had to hold on to beat him that you would say “a win is a win”???? Barely beat South Carolina, Barely beat Kentucky, Barely beat Auburn—-We have not contended for THE crown since 1980 and if we are going to continue to recite “A win is a win” it might be another 28 years. I really don’t think Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Texas and I KNOW Florida would not BARELY beat any of those teams mentioned. I’m all for “a win is a win” when you are playing a recognized power with talent comparable to yours, but these “Escapes” have truly been indicative of a program spinning its wheels. If you disagree, I’ll see you in 2036 at the Gator Bowl.

31-0 at the half?!!!

Well UGA fans - I actually think you guys should be proud of 9-2.

Yes - the Bama Black Out and the Gator Stomp were bitter pills to swallow - but the media (national and local) put way too many expectations on a team that featured sports car type skill position - but only a decent engine that needs some fine tuning and experience.

Personally - I predicted that UGA would lose to either Auburn or KY. I was thinking KY because it was right after Florida and anyone with a brain saw that beat down coming.

It took heart to beat Kentucky and Auburn - that’s what saw UGA through these games. Heart is what sees you through when things are not going right

UGA - the entire year has been a struggle due to youth, Key injuries, special teams play, huge expectations, and let’s face it - coaching.

UGA has good coaches - but every year is a different puzzle - and the coaching staff just might be getting the best out of this bunch in 2008 for all the reasons mentioned above.

One other thing - I really think that there are about 5 super teams that have separated themselves from the pack. Absolutely lights out got it going on. When this happens - it’s an incredible thing. Bama, Gators, Longhorns, Sooners, TX Tech Red Raiders are there - but can they sustain.

Penn St, OH State and USC are the next wave.

Beyond that - it’s a big pile - but name a team beyond those I just mentioned that UGA could not compete against and potentially win.

As much fun as I have had with at UGA’s expense this season - I will be rooting for UGA to beat GT ….. and will be rooting for UGA to beat your BIG 10 bowl opponent.

However, I would not be surprised if GT beats this group of dogs in 2008 - in fact - I thing GT will win as they will be motivated and have overachieved this year.

Huh? I believe UGA was ranked 2nd or 3rd when the Alabama game rolled around. They were ranked 8th, I believe. what’s this? Since when does a perennial top 10 ranking at season’s end make a team “middle of the road”? Florida is not a “yearly powerhouse”. When does a 9-4 record and a bowl blowout to a team that lost to App State dictate a yearly powerhouse??? lmao!! RAMBLE ON You should worry about filling up your 50,000 seat stadium. You can’t even do that unless UGA comes to town and fills half of it for you. You are such a whiny little loser. I’m glad you’re here, though. At least it gives you something to do since there’s not much going on over on the Tech blogs (except badmouthing the real college football program in Georgia).

Chip, this team lacks accountability. Not necessarily heart. To see the team dancing in front of the fans at away games after a win is shameless. We have been lucky the past 2 weeks and we should act like it. If we don’t improve on defense, GT will beat us, and badly. That will not go over well at all. CMR needs to get fired up and get in somebody’s grille! I think Fabris and Bobo need a stern “come to Jesus” meeting with CMR and the Tech game should decide Martinez’ fate. If our D is unprepared for Tech, then he needs to go. Our linebackers are the only bright spot on our team but by the end of the game, they are worn out from doing all the work. The starting DBs are very good, but the gap between the starters and their backups is HUGE. We do not have a legitimate headhunter at safety. That’s something we have had in the past that other teams have had to allow for, but not this year. Right now, I am not overly worried about Tech because I think we will handle them, as long as we are prepared. If we are not prepared, we will lose, and Willie needs to be fired!

Denial - We’re #1! We need to clear the calendar for January in Miami!!! We will handle our schedule and so what if our O-line is young.

Anger - I hate the black jerseys. Fire CWM immediately!!

Bargaining - If we beat the Gators, we are back in this thing!

Depression - Good Lord, annihilated by UF. What terrible effort. What terrible coaching. Can we beat ANYBODY?

Acceptance - Let’s beat Tech, win the bowl, post our 11-2 and move on.

Sometimes it just all doesn’t fit together the way it does on paper. The offensive line has played well enough to win most games; the defense has played well enough to win most games. The special teams are a glaring problem as far as I’m concerned. We need to put more of the “best” out there - problem solved! Another thing this team lacks is a big hitter in the secondary - a Davis or Blue - maybe there aren’t any on the team right now but we do need to find one and in a hurry. Injuries killed us too and sometimes it all came down to coaching or play-calling if you will - on both sides of the ball. It has been a good season - we might not have beaten UA and UF even playing well - they are the number 1 and 3 teams in the country! I’m done rambling. OOPs - poor choice of words!! Beat Tech!!!!!

Now if the heart thing is not the problem and this team just happens to not be as good as its hype, they still may play better with the questioning the manhood thing. I agree with most of the bloggers on this blog. 9-2 doesn’t sound like a team with no heart. We’ve had some pretty significant injuries; e.g., Sturdivant, Vance, Owens, and Chandler being banged up most of the season. Next year we’ll have Cornelius Washington and, hopefully, Toby Jackson to help the pass rush. Maybe that will improve our pass rush. Also, our O-line should be better. We’ll not only have some returning starters, bur we’ll have more experience to start the season. There are probably 90 teams that would love to have our record this year. And how many teams would like to have our record over the last eight years?

By itbil

November 18, 2008 2:39 PM | Link to this

A team that did not have heart would not have gutted out wins against Kentucky and Auburn the last 2 weeks.

Georgia is playing “around” the problem of an injury ridden offensive line that is playing just well enough to allow the qb, rb’s, and receivers to score enough points to win.

The defense is on the field a lot and is playing to keep the game under control. A high risk defense lives by the blitz and dies by the blitz.

The special teams are horrible and have put added pressure on the defense (and offense) this season. It is one area the coaches should work to square away with a week off.

I think everyone has done well to climb to 1 9-2 record with one loss to the current BCS #1 and the other loss to the future final BCS #1.

Some seasons are tougher than others, and remember that Georgia’s strength of schedule is the toughest in the nation for 1A schools.

Overall I am pleased with the season thus far and a win over Georgia Trek would make for a great 10-2 year.

If we can get healthy for the bowl game, and get the younger players further ready, an 11-2 season would be fantastic.

The computer poll should have us at about #5, but the dill holes who vote in the other two polls will probably drop us down to #10. But that is the politics of the media and other coaches.

PS: BamaStan reinforces everything I have come to think about the typical Alabama fan.

This article is really pathetic. Does it matter that the last four games have been road games? The fact that Georgia has only lost two games this season (both losses were to the #1 and #5) and you act like the whole season has sucked. However, GA Tech has a 7-3 record playing only one team that was ranked and might I add, not even in the top ten. This makes GA Tech look good? I am so sick of GA Tech fans jumping on the band wagon this year just because they have a new coach, maybe it’s just been so long since they have had anything to be excited about. It certainly doesn’t come from watching their football team play. If Georgia only sold 47,000 tickets to a home game, we would be blasted in the newspaper, I guess that is the norm for Tech fans. They can talk crap all year and not even support their own team at home. That really shows a lot of “heart”, doesn’t it?

If there are any Georgia “fans” out there who will not be satisfied without a NC, the vast majority of the Bulldog nation would prefer that you select another school’s team to pull for.

I don’t think the players lack heart at all. Sadly, the same cannot be said of the some UGA fans. I have never heard such crying, b***, and moaning after being 9-2 in all My years of following the Dogs. IMHO, many of the mistakes made by the players were due to inexperence, due to youth, or due to playing a new posistion because of injuries. Much of the negativity from fans IMO, is also due to lack of experence. Richt is in his eigth year, he has averaged about 10 wins a year. Many young fans do not remember a losing season, or not being invited to a bowl game. When some Dawgs have experenced a little more of life’s ups and downs they will be better able to face disappointment without feeling the need to fire everybody. In short, Richt has simply spoiled the UGA fan base. The biggest hurdle that this team has faced is injuries. UGA is a very talented team, and very deep, but there is a reason some guys start and some are back-ups. When enough starters are out, performance suffers. I do think some areas need work and some are strong. Offensive skill posistions are very strong, linebacking is good, DT play has been good as a whole and Asher Allen has shown himself to be an excellent CB. The other CBs and Ss need work, as do the DE and O line slots. Sturdivant, Vance and Owens return next year and should help both lines. Jackson is supposed to enroll next January, and Washington and Longo will be in the mix at DE. As for the DBs, another CB needs to emerge to help Allen out and UGA’s safeties need to do a better job of tackling. These are problems to be sure, but certainly not fatal flaws. I think you may have a point about chemistry Chip, but keep in mind that this is a young team and chemistry has to develope. I think the program at UGA is on the right path. Richt could take the easy way out and raid the JC ranks for a few guys and join the bidding wars for “elite” assts and possibly have an “overnight” success, but I believe CMR wants to be at UGA for another 10 to 15 years and is building a program for the long haul. If Richt continues to win in the double digits every year UGA will have a NC sooner or later. In the meanwhile, let’s enjoy every win. Remember that in college football losing is always just around the corner.

(Pours a shot of whiskey)

Chip those 2 (drinks shot of whiskey) losses were brutal to watch. But, as posted above by one of your other bloggers, a heart-less team would not have been able to come back and win the UK game. Might not have been able to hold off Auburn either. Fans have been fired up over what they perceived to be a lack of intensity, passion, and aggression from the defense. Well, I have often felt the same way. Those 3 missing ingredients sound like a case of heartless football. That being said, the UGA offense has produced 2 HUGE game winning TD drives, during crunch time. In classic SEC fashion, that was barely enough to secure the victories over UK and Auburn. With the game on the line, the oft maligned UGA defense survived late scares in those contests. So what do we make of this team? Identity crisis? Lack of chemistry? No heart?

I won’t pretend to know. As a fan, I take solice in the fact that when the Dawgs desperately needed to score, they produced lead changing TD drives during the last 2 weeks. It wasn’t pretty. The opponents weren’t exactly juggernauts. Well, I’ll take the wins.

The mighty Trojans, the best pro team in college football this decade, yep 1 NC. Richt will get there, he is closer to it than he has ever been. AltamahaDawg, Good points. And I blame the player not the coach for the field goal misses this season. But don’t you question the personnel choices for returning kicks and punts this year? Miller only has one fumble, but he had dropped punts and scooped them up several times before that. A fumbled punt seemed inevitable. Yes, he has one TD return, but I honestly believe other Dawgs have that ability. I also thought Richard Samuel got too many chances as a return man and would make a better blocker. Meanwhile, what happened to Asher Allen? He was a great return man before; let’s use him more.

We can question the quality of play all day long, but how can you question a 9 win team’s heart? I think the question is certainly valid for Clemson and Tennessee this year, but not Georgia.

It was easy to see this coming in August when Georgia Southern tickets were $100 plus, and expectations were through the roof. Nothing short of winning every game convincingly would satisfy many of us.

As I see it, Coach Richt was hired to represent our University in an honorable way, build our players into men, and win games (not necessarily with “style”). I feel he has done his best to fulfill this charge.

This staff has won an average of 10 games a year (not many can make that claim).

Winning every game is not a guarantee to even play for the National Championship (see Auburn 2004).

All connected with our program have worked and sacrificed year round more than any of us can truly comprehend-no one wanted to win every game more than they did. I’m sure they wish they could replay the Alabama and Florida games, but I am certain they played as hard as they could (not as well as they could have).

Personally, I would be very happy with 2 more wins in any way that they may be achieved. Criticize all you want.

Reading a post before responding would be a good tip. My contention - what team could beat LSU, FL, KY and AUB - all on the road - in consecutive weeks. Your response - Florida. I know Tebow is the second coming and all - but kind of hard to do - Florida can beat Florida on the road? Sounds like the old “Ditka” skit on SNL.

If you’d like to respond - please tell me which NCAA team in 2008 could play the four teams mentioned - on the road in consecutive weeks - and go 4 and 0. Texas Tech? USC? Oklahoma? Maybe, but not likely - the whole point of my post is to say virtually ANYONE in the country will likely lose at least one of those 4 games - with UF being the most obvious game they would lose.

I thought this was somewhat interesting:

http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20081117/NEWS/811170276/1130?Title=ChemistryhelpsUF_succeed

On the subject of chemistry, Urban Meyer talks about how the Gators have talent, but they also have great chemistry this year, which is what they were lacking last year.

“Meyer said coaches talk about chemistry all the time, but actually having it is easier said than done.

‘There isn’t an easy answer, or everyone would build it,’ Meyer said. ‘I’ve been in coaching 25 years and you know how many great chemistry teams I’ve had? Three or four. It’s uncommon to have a team with great chemistry.”

Even though I can’t stand the guy, I think he makes a good point. Chemistry isn’t something that you can just make up. Might be something to think about. I definitely don’t think it’s a heart problem, though. I, for one, am very proud of the 9-2 Bulldogs considering the hand that we’ve been dealt with our injuries.

The players who participate in collegiate athletics give all of their time and talents to their university and its alumni. They lay it on the line each and every week for every so called fan. They do it because they love it. This team has plenty of hearts and every moron challenging that is no fan I would ever want to be. I love these guys through every struggle and success. It’s sad when the seniors go because each of them sacrificed many things to do the university proud. I never question a person who goes out and plays the violent sport of football. No football player should have their heart questioned. Its downright disrespectful and disgusting. You Yech losers who come on here and question them are the face of your school too. It shows the lack of class that you claim UGA doesn’t have. What hypocrites! I know not all Yech fans and UGA fans are like those opining on this blog but it sure raises questions about each school and who supports them. Its embarrassing to read some of the drivel that both sides have done on here. Its sad. Its seems the only joy in life that these turkeys get is bringing up negative, unjustified, and unruly comments. Whats bad is good and whats good is bad. Sick society showing its worst members. What an indictment of unintelligence this whole blog has become. The newspaper and Towers should be ashamed for starting this “no heart” diatribe. They stirred the pot and all we ended up with is garbage spewing out all over the place. Tell you what all you questioners of heart to go and do….Show what kind of heart you have…go tell the players to their faces the very things that all of you have been saying. What? You would never do it!? Why not? You know what that means…a bunch of know it all blogger acting like little kids by hiding behind their keyboards & showing that it is really you that has…NO HEART!

Face facts people. Most years everything just doesn’t fall into place. Immediate injuries signaled trouble ahead. Road wins at Carolina and Arizona State were adequate. The mission was accomplished and on track. The Alabama game was a shot in the teeth brought about by the team perhaps believing they were good enough just to show up in black jerseys at home. Saban has his team always ultra prepared to play and they just stunned Georgia with their efficiency and execution. Georgia showed great heart and desire in the 2nd half even though the game was over. Tennessee and Vandy were solid wins, not spectacular but neither game was ever really in doubt. LSU was a high water mark even though the defense tuned out frequently with a sizable lead. Its frustrating that the Florida game is now referenced hostorically as a rout. Did anyone watch the game?? If Blair Walsh doesn’t show up blindfolded and Stafford and Chandler execute a simple 10 yard pitch and catch, its 14-13 at the half. (that is ignoring the ill fated onside kick or Georgia could actually have been leading). After stopping the Gators first drive, Georgia drives from their 1-yd line to the Gator 30. Stafford then was picked off by Hayden (who pushed away AJ Green) and returned the ball to the UGA goal line. One play later, 21-3. Game Over. Anything that happened after that is meaningless. Almost all FLA subsequent points were prompted by desperation Georgia turnovers. The fact that this team sucked it up and won SEC road games the last two weeks is to be commended even if they underachieved in playing at the top of their game. I expect them to take out a great deal of frustration and beat TECH badly upon finally getting back home. Bottom line…its disappointing not to be in the hunt for the big prize but the season has hardly been the disaster that many extremists on this blog suggest. This time’s collective football IQ, coaches included, has been subpar. The season however is still pretty damn successful.

Listening to the basketball Bulldogs on radio, and can’t help but miss Sundiata Gaines. I don’t know much about the NBA. Did he make somebody’s roster?

What do you expect from Dennis Felton’s squad this year? I’ve been impressed with Travis Leslie, although the season is very young. Hopefully, this team will continue to improve and build upon last year’s exciting SEC tournament run.

I really think the main problem was at DE,and the loss of Owens. We had no pass rush this year, and I don’t see it getting better next year. Our lack of a pass rush has made our DBs look bad. Last year we put Tebow on the ground, and this year he had all day to throw. I think that was the big difference. Our lack of a pass rush made Alabama look like they had an all american quarterback.. I just hope it can be fixed by next year. I don’t think it has anything to do with heart.

Uh, duh. Have you ever heard of Chan Gailey and Reggie Ball? Chan couldn’t even take advantage of having the best wide reciever in college football. It sucks for Calvin that he had to deal with that for 3 years in college and now indefinitely at Detroit.

David……..The off the field arrests for Georgia are pale in comparison to those at Florida (aggravated assault, battery, using credit card of dead person) and Bama (trafficking the white powder, armed robbery). Georgia kids partake in a little drinking, rubbing the belly of a 19 yo preggo non-UGA student in the East Campus Village at 1am, wreckless driving, criminal trespass, etc.) While it is well documented that some UGA players had some off the field issues, those issues are pale in comparison to the thugs at UF and Bama. Maybe that’s the problem. Maybe we’re not recruiting rapists, drug dealers and those who like to smother their girlfriends with pillows.

Richt is a good coach and a good person. I’m lad we have him at UGA. However, we do need a coach on staff that will put the fear of God into players. I don’t think Richt intimidates players and that is something that is needed to max performance, (see Saban and Muschamp).

Chip, What the hell do you know about heart? Have you ever stepped on the field with pads on, on a Saturday afternoon or for the matter a Friday night? It takes a lot of heart to sit behind a computer and pound out criticism after criticism and never look at the real picture! Like injuries have plagued this team, like we have no all SEC DE’s like we have had for the past 5 years. Like we have the most inexperienced OL we have ever had! You make me sick. You have no idea about these kids hearts and what kind of effort they put into games. Give it a rest! These are still kids for God’s sake! Get off their a* and find something productive to write about. You, Mr. Powers are nothing more than a tabloid journalist. All you do is try and stir up crap so you can see how many band-wagon jumpers will get on here and agree with you. I’m totally dismayed at how folks can get on here and hammer “their team” when the Dogs are 9-2. Wake up folks and get in the real world, it could be worse…we could be Tech!

Chip, first of all I have no idea why you said that Georgia will not play in the capital one bowl. I think Georgia most certainly will play in the capital one bowl, Georgia is the best 3rd team in the SEC. Florida and Alabama will go to the NC and Sugar bowl, Capital one will chose the best team after the NC and sugar selection, the closest team to Georgia is LSU with 3 losses and probably they will lose to Ole miss. please clarify because I live in Florida and I’m planning to go to the game especially if its against Ohio state. and the Talk about no heart, no swagger and this and that is just a truck full of BULL CRAP!! its about coaching, fire Martinez and the special team coach and I’m pretty certain things will be much better, I dont know why you keep protecting Martinez

No new to pile on this subject. I want to look ahead to the upcoming sports articles that read, “UGA has top football recruiting class in Nation”. We see it every year, how great the recruiting class is, and how it promises GREAT THINGS down the road. It is as certain as when the swallows return to Capistrano, the best recruiting team in college football will be going to UGA. I just can’t wait, and it will happen, and when it does, I will barf till the dry heaves set in just like I have done for the last several years. So, we allegedly get these GREAT jocks, then what happens to them? We hear stories of transfers, drop outs, kick outs, arrests, and finally during the season, suspensions. So goes most of the greats. Congrats to Stafford and Knowshon for weathering the trials and tribulations of being a top athelete at UGA. Most don’t make it. The ones that do commit penalties, lose aggression, play around, complain they aren’t ‘having fun’. What makes it worse is that I don’t like basketball. So, when football season is over I just ‘stew’ over what might have been in what was thought to be a most promising season. I was a student during Johnny Griffith as head coach. Football at UGA was really bad as the record showed. We would stay in the dorm and watch exciting games like Rutgers at Yale. HAR HAR, those were the days all right. Moving on, I am ok with the 9-2, but if the dawgs lose to Tech, it will be all for naught as far as I am concerned and no matter what excuses are offered up by anyone in the AD will be pure bs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Three comments: 1. This team does NOT lack heart. A team lacking heart would have never beaten Auburn, Kentucky or Vandy the way those games went down. This team never quit against Bama and Florida. They play hard all the time.

  1. To win a NC, you have to have luck - not just great coaching or great players -lots of teams have that. You HAVE to have luck to win a NC. Florida may be the best team in the nation, but they got beat by Ole Miss at home. Poor coaching? Play calling? Lack of talent??? If Florida wins the NC this year, it is because they got lucky and someone ahead of them lost.

  2. This team is as good as it can be. I don’t see how ANY coaching staff could have gotten better than 9-2 from this group given the injuries and telant level. As for coaching, any fan who actually knows anything about football (i.e. actually played it and/or coached it) can plainly see that the problems on defense are certainly not related to coaching. Consistently, players are in proper position to make plays but don’t make them. How many times has a pass been completed over Evans when he was tight on his man? How many times have teams taken our DE’s out of the play with a block from a receiver or back? Face the fact, the “talent” level on defense is NOT what most fans think it is. We have good solid players, but very very few playmakers. Without big Ownens, teams can simpply double on Gino and Kade and we have no great DE’s like Richt teams always have had in the past. Our secondary - like anyone’s would be - is vulnerable when there is no pressure from the line.

I am a Georgia grad and watch the dogs every weekend. They had a tough schedule and a lot of injuries this year but also had some 4 star recruits as backups. The thing that concerned me this year were the responses by players after the games. We have a lot of talent but I question the commitment of the team this year compared to a Florida & Alabama. We won a lot of games this year on talent and not dicipline, exection etc. As I said in a earlier blog look at the way they handle themselves after some of the games. After Auburn you would have thought they had won the National Championship and not a game they should have won by two touchdowns. These are good kids but if they want a National Championship they are going to need the focus of a Tim Tebow.

Dawg88, Huh??,Alt- Good posts, but DawgFan101 went one better. Chip should be the focus of our ire.

There is a huge disconnect here. First, we had injuries at key positions. Coaches filled in for them and we got more injuries. They crosstrained and moved people into new positions because they had good backup players at other positions. So now we have players that support the big producers in unfamiliar spots that don’t work too well and we have to reposition more. More injuries occur, but by now no one is paying attention because ,after fighting like hell to get wins, they take a hit from Bama. Not only do the players get ignored that were injured in the Bama game but the walking wounded patching up each game afterward are now fighting in the trenches…wounded, but fighting on. Next comes the player inconsistencies in the FU game and the blame game is on. Never mind that the players keep playing WITH HEART and continue on a winning path, some fans want their pound of flesh and use every excuse to continue week after week to rant and rail against the coaches, the players and the team. When they get shamed by their fellow posters, they shift to some other part of the team.

In my book this is a great fighting team that is still winning to preserve the honor they have fought for and our honor as fans as well. These crappy headlines about heart show how wide the disconnect is. What do you think Richt, the coaches and the team feel about those losses? They had to go through the floor. All of them. They can’t afford to lay around and pi$$ and moan like many of you do. They have gotten down to work after swallowing hard and continued to practice “with spirit” according to the head coache’s words that I read. A total disconnect has occurred, with media help, between some of the fan base and the team. Some are still describing plays like they are the only ones who have seen them, know what they mean and are the only one who can go to Athens to tell the coaches and team how to straighten it all out. BULL$HIT! While you are misdirected with your complaint along with media negativity, it never seems to occur to some of you that you could help your team and their spirit by attacking these unfair and misplaced digs at a great team. The reason they are great is because they continue to produce and win while part of their fanbase is pi$$ing in the wind and agreeing with the negative media who are only trying to generate blogging clicks to support their way of life. Why don’t we blog the sports editor about the poor job we perceive that they are doing while using part of our disgruntled fan base and interlopers to generate computer clicks. It is sad to see well meaning fans get caught up in this while they maintain that they have the right to complain, but fail to see how they fall right into what the author wanted in the first place—disgruntlement in type that hurts the team. What if you were a team member and read these postings? I hope that they are laughing, but fear that they may become depressed when they see such self-serving and fitful musings about “my right to complain”. If you are such a fan, then complain about these NEGATIVELY WRITTEN ARTICLES ABOUT YOUR TEAM!! The big disconnect comes when you imagine how the team is practicing and holding their heads up and continuing to win. I’ll bet none of them are going on and on about their mistakes (which they seem to make a play that is redeeming soon thereafter) because they can’t afford to . That’s how you lose confidence as some of you players out there know. But the bloggin’**wailing continues.

How about individual play this last week! The game-winning leaping catch of a freshman player(without heart), a last minute TD pass by a QB who doesn’t know the word quit(but playing without heart), the champion RB who chalked up 135 yds running and a bunch more pass receiving(without heart), A linebacker playing his position and three others and suddenly appearing to prevent game-winning TDs as a safety(without heart), Safeties and linebackers batting down and covering like a mosquito net those pass daggers that were aimed at the team’s and the fan’s heart(without passion and heart)…etc. This disconnect of some fans and their team has taken on a life of it’s own.

What in hell is the matter with some of you putting on those “rose-colored glasses” you deride others about? THAT’S WHAT FANS DO!! Just cease the unproductive negative input because we really don’t get that you are the greatest football tactician since sliced bread. We really don’t read your blogs with the same ego you used when producing it. I can’t believe some of you not getting any pleasure from the plays your team makes when winning or losing. Cheer for them hard, gang since there are only 2 games left for you to enjoy your team. Funny how the whole season disappears when you get caught up in your cups.

I want Mark Richt fired! He has no business coaching in major conference like the SEC. Back to Tallahassee please! I can only dream the DAWG fans are this stupid. UGA ain’t no National Title School. They have a great tradition there… a tradition of losing 2-4 games every year. A Buck Belue type player only comes around once in a 100 years and they were lucky he carried them to a NC. Herschel also helped. Settle down and settle in. Enjoy beating the great programs once every five years and tear down the goal posts. As for Tech they have no illusions of granduer so quit striking our at them. Maybe they win and tear down the hedges again or back the Wreck over uggga 36?

It’s been a very disappointing year. It seems to me that the season went quicker than last. It showed how important J.O was to the defense from a talent standpoint and most impotantly I think from a leadership standpoint. The lack of strong Senior leadership attributed to all of this. This started in the offseason with all the arrests’. If we can finish 10-2 and regroup for next year. Does anyone think Stafford or Knowshon will come back ? We need some fresh talent on defense. Hopefully we can sign Branden Smith. What other studs do we have coming ? Does anyone know ?

I am a Dawg fan, father of 2 UGA graduates, and an ex coach at the HS level. I said that to say this. This team gets by on talent, but lacks a fire in their guts. If Knowshon’s attifude was shared by more of the team they’d be a different team. Instead, there seems to be some resentment about all the publicity Knowshan and Stafford receive. The defense is, and it hurts to say this, horrible. Erk is probably trying to dig out of his grave. The Dawgs haven’t always had the best talent on defense, but they would always fight with everything in their being to keep teams out of the end zone. I understand that Willie is Coach R’s man, and it is possible he is a great X and 0 coach, but he clearly isn’t a motivator. He doesn’t die with every point the Dawgs give up. General Lee was a great General, but once he lost Stone Wall Jackson, he didn’t win a lot more important battles. Lots of folks didn’t like Van Gorder leaving, but he was (and seems to still be) a great motivator much like Erk was. Ironic that Muschamp is now the next HC at Texas. I don’t thnk Willie needs to be fired, just reassigned where a real coach could motivate the defense.

LAst year when we were denied at the last second a chance to play for all the marbles it seemed to motivate them and give them a passion to play, were we alot better than Hawaii? Sure, but we played with a veneance in that game. I can’t recall any game like that this year. This is about the ho-humist GA team I can remember. Several bloggers have commented that they are even boring to watch.

I have watched too many wins this year where I ended up feeling empty. In the past I have tried to listen to the post game show on the radio, but this year how can you be excited about beating a team (barely) that you could have mopped the floor with had you played with a passion and played like you were disciplined?

If somone had told me we would be lucky to win 7-8 games before the season started I guess I would be ecstatic. But this team was supposed to fly higher potentially than any GA team since 1980 and they barely even got off the ground.

The manner in which we got beat by ALA and FLA makes me wonder how that can be overcome next year.

This room has finally convinced me, brought it to light, opened my eyes. It’s all about the platitudes man, the platitudes. Used to be about facts, but now I’m thinking outside the box. Pushing the envelope. Because at the end of the day, it’s take no prisoners. As far as the team, full steam ahead. Take it up a notch. Time to bring the A game. 110%. And Coaches, we need some innovation and motivation. The bottom line is that the buck stops with you. Next year we need to manage the expectations, fly under the radar and shoot for the moon.

UGA sucks. Richt should go back to being a waterboy for Miami like when he was last string Qb. All uga fans should expect is 3 losses every year because they are a mid-level team.

I am taking the bye week over GA by 5 and a half. Even though they have the week off I bet UGA will find a way to get either 10 penalties or 5 arrests. Im scared for you if you live in Athens with a bye week for the athletes/cavemen

I know what a duck-billed platypus is… proof that God smokes dope.

A platitude, on the other hand is a little harder to decipher and somewhat trite, like Auburn University (just kiddin’). I love those terrible tigers. They still play Bon Jovi songs as a morale booster at the games. Hope they kick the sh!t out of Bama

You can’t call a team that finishes in the top ten (out of 119) almost every year a mid-level team. Words can’t describe how asinine that comment is. Furthermore, winning an SEC championship is really the primary objective of every season, IMO(and the dawgs have 2 of last 5). Not that I wouldn’t love the dawgs to win a NC, but the BCS has major credibility problems.

The thing with UGA football is the two games ya’ll had on National TV you were horrible-that is what the nation knows of UGA football-Ya’ll got all the media at the first of the year and you blew it!!! Is not your game on the 29th a CBS national game? Well maybe ya’ll can prove something to the nation-Boy I would hate to see you lose to a sorry bunch as ya’ll say they(TECH)are-What would the bulldog nation cry be then? The games I saw was no passion-period call that heart-don’t tell me about young teams- look at teams across the nation-injurys happen-the dogs are not playing motivated ball!

I don’t think it’s lack of heart, more a lack of will or desire, especially when things are tough. Richt’s teams always seem to lose at least one game a year in blow out fashion. Once they get down big they just seem to give up, in these games. Now I could be wrong, but has their ever been a MNC that’s lost just one game during their season in blowout fashion? I don’t think so.

Face it Bulldogs fans, UGA is not a National Power. Georgia certainly is among the top-tier programs in the country, but it has never been a consistent National Title contender.

Georgia was outshone by Tennessee and Florida in the 90s, and now it’s all about Florida, LSU, and, wouldn’t you know it, Alabama.

Mark Richt is a fantastic coach and a good man. Hopefully, he won’t get derailed by unrealistic expectations from the Dawg Nation. Georgia will compete for a National Title every now and then but don’t expect to be in the hunt every 2 years.

Carolina, UT and LSU were all on CBS — National TV.

Most of us read about the locker room during halftime in Jax. Heard from someone in the football program that you could hear a pin drop in the locker room. Only down 14-3 and yet they were mentally out of it.

And guess what Dogs-this is the pinnacle for the next few years. Consider this: You have a top 5 NFL pick at QB (leaving?) , a top 10 RB (leaving?), a soon to be top 5 WR (known not to be the greatest of students), and an assortment of others average pieces to play with next year. Even ol’ Caleb King has dropped back a notch and likely won’t have the grades to stick around. What if they all go at once? Ouch.

Like I said, this was the year and, uh oh, that ship has sailed. Same goes for Bammer-first year starting QB’s don’t do so well in the SEC-don’t care who you are.

If you had been watching Chan Gailey football for the last several years as a long-suffering Tech Fan you’d be f**king ecstatic! Trust me! And don’t tell me not to jump on the bandwagon when your team should rightly be named The Bandwagoneers. We haven’t lost a single game this year as a result of stupid coaching.Big improvement! If we don’t win but seven this year at least we have a team we can be proud of.The future is bright. You won’t find a real Tech fan that doesn’t love this team. I don’t know of any nice way to put it:You sir, are an idiot

I had not made my mind up as I headed to the polls election day, but I was leaning towards Obama and as I was on the way to the polls I heard on the radio Obama wanted a playoff in college football. That put me firmly in the Obama corner as I walked into the polling place and voted. I wonder if that had any impact on anyones vote for Obama like I think it did on my vote. I thought I was going to vote for him but when I heard the playoff talk there was no doubt about it after that.

For all you yech fans on this blog…. This is freaking hilarious….I suppose ESPN did not check the Sagarin rankings and find out the acc was such a powerhouse!! LMAO…. The Atlantic Coast Conference (11) was supposed to be Clemson (12) and a bunch of schmoes. Instead, it’s a bunch of schmoes and a sub-schmo Clemson train wreck. What happened: The Tigers have staggered to a coach-firing 5-5, leaving the league to an indistinguishable muddle of 7-3 and 6-4 teams — one of which will stumble its way into a BCS bowl. Which should assure the ACC of a 10th BCS bowl loss in 11 tries. Only Miami currently is riding anything longer than a two-game winning streak. You can view this on ESPN’s website under NCAA…Pat Forde article. acc, the laughing stock of college football……

So I guess UGA is finally, after 10 games, going to unlease that big bad BREAKOUT game against Tech. Its about time. With the #1 coach in the land, the #1 QB, the #1 running back, 85 high school ALL-AMS on the bench, the #1 receiver where has this bad A game been ? The closest match to this team is Notre Dame. ALL BLOW and NO SHOW.

This is a good football team, not a great team and we just have to accept that. The whole problem can be laid on the lines.

On offense it’s just been injuries and youth. We started the year with 13 eligible linemen and are now down to 7 that we’re willing to play (there are a couple we’re trying to redshirt). There aren’t very many teams i can think of that could have the sort of an issue and be 9-2 (especially in the SEC). People talk about our great trio of AJ, stafford, and moreno, but those great players are directly affected by the offensive line (imagine the year they could have without the injuries up front). We lead the SEC in passing, total yards, and are second in scoring - not bad for a team with “problems”. One difference from the beginning of the season to now though is we’ve ventured back to our previous years of “that’s ok, we’ll just kick a 25 yard field goal instead of getting a touchdown”, and a good deal of that is redzone play calling.

Defensively, it is all about pressure (or lack there of). We get absolutely no pressure from our front four. I mean i can throw the ball well enough to hit a receiver if i had that kind of time, and if i was the receiver i could get open eventually with that time. So it all starts there (never knew we’d miss Howard as much as we are). The way to apply pressure without the front four getting it is to blitz. This leaves us vulnerable to a big play. The huge problem for us this year is even when we send pressure (a fifth of sometimes even sixth man) we STILL don’t get there. To me this has to be because of scheming, like our blitzes are not as well drawn up as other teams (or our linebackers and/or safeties have terrible timing). If you can’t get pressure you can’t force offenses out of doing what they want. If you can’t get pressure normally you need to blitz. If you can’t get pressure blitzing, you better hope your offense bails you out (see 7 of 9 wins).

With Richt here, and the kind of recruiting base we have, we’re a 10 win season always waiting to happen. We’re spoiled now, and expectations have definitely risen. I know there are plenty of times during the nineties i would have loved to be 9-2. But until the lines get addressed (mainly a game-changing defensive end or two) we won’t be a national championship team.

I notice you hicks always preach coach richt christian values, but we dont want no da*n preacher as a head coach, thats why UGAY always comes up short in the end, the only way you become CHAMPION is to put out the best ATHLETES PERIOD, NOT THESE UNCLE TOM TYPE UGAY PLAYERS, WE WANT MONSTERS THUGS and SPEED LIKE FLORIDA AND USC. P.S. EMBRED HICKS UGAY NEEDS TO JUST WIN IN THE FUTURE.
