UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

‘Tough grind’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Someone asked Mark Richt on his Sunday evening teleconference what one word he would choose to describe this Georgia season to date.
Richt struggled to reduce it to one.
“I’ll say - I don’t even know what I could say other than it’s been a tough grind,” he said.
“Most seasons are, really and truly,” he added.
He went on to speak of Georgia’s 9-2 record in the context of an inordinate number of injuries and recent stretch of four consecutive games away from Athens:
“I was hoping we’d be a team that would be resilient and would persevere and do what it takes to win,” Richt said. “It was a tough stretch. Of course, we didn’t win them all. But we won three out of four, and after having a tough loss [to Florida], we played two extremely emotional games after that and we hung in there and we finished.
“I think once you lose the opportunity to play for the SEC championship, it could make a lot of guys say, ‘Is it really worth it?,’ that kind of thing. But our guys kept fighting because they care and are high-character guys and our leaders kept leading and our coaches kept banging away. It was very good to see that our guys were as tight knit as I really thought they were.”
Anyway, back to the original question, which was asked by Anthony Dasher: What one word would YOU choose to describe this Georgia season?

With the 9-2 record despite the injuries and the brutal schedule but considering that the two losses were bad losses, I’d have to say “unconventional”.

Chip, I would have to say a “sober” season. I certainly don’t drink like I used to in Athens, however, I thought for the big games, Bama and Florida that I would buy a six pack and enjoy our dawgs putting the hurt on a couple of fine SEC opponents. My game plan was to have the food prepared and get ready to toss a few back when the we took the lead and the game was in our hands. I only have four beers left out of that six pack. I drank two of them watching the Lions against the Bears (I thought Detroit had the game wrapped up! Doh!). I will save the other four for Tech game and I certainly hope the team can let me get a buzz on for that one.
Chip, you forgot to mention that Willie Martinez is taking fan’s suggestions for defensive schemes and personnel positions for the Tech game. He wants our input, names & addresses must be included, so that he will know who to call out on the blogs after the game. Send them to “savemyJOB.willie@uga.edu”. He said that he has two weeks to work everything in. Note: He will be running the softest zone D we have seen all year. Especially on third and short. That will not change. Also he will not key any players on the QB or RB on the option plays. He also wants to know how many and what type of penalties do you want to see. Flagrant personal after a big turnover and 3rd down stop? Late hit on the the QB out of bounds? Hands to the face to keep a drive a live? How a bout a face mask to move the bees into a game winning field goal stituation?
Please Dawgs, stuff the jackets, as I said before I can’t keep sweating these games up here. 30 degrees, snow and perspiration don’t go together. Plus I need a few beers. Go Dawgs! Tough road trip you guys have been on for the past few weeks.

I don’t normally rip individual players but Reshad Jones should be benched. He refuses to wrap up when tackling, preferring to stay upright and bump them with a shoulder. He is often out of position and I suspect very undisciplined in playing assignment football. I’d rather have a lesser talent on the field who will stay in position to the best of his ability and actually try to tackle someone rather than simply bumping them and hoping they fall down. Enough is enough! JAH

UNDISCIPLINED!!!
This is without a doubt the single-most undisciplined football team i have ever seen play.
And that falls directly on the coaches, specifically Willie Martinez and his inordinately undisciplined defense.
The number of personal fouls coming from the Georgia defense this year has been astronomical to say the least.
A team of 11 MeAngelo Hall’s couldn’t have gotten as many personal fouls as Georgia has gotten on defense this year.
SIX personal fouls on Saturday! SIX!!!
Willie Martinez needs to be fired not because he’s a terrible defensive coordinator (although he is), he needs to be fired because he runs the single-most undisciplined defense in college football.
This team plays like a bunch of VaTech thugs.
And I am as ashamed in a way I’ve never been to call myself a member of Bulldog Nation.
You tell Mark Richt that, Chip, as he’s insinuating we’re all idiots for insisting that Martinez be fired.
We’re ashamed of this team and they way they conduct themselves off and on the field.
ASHAMED!!!

I guess I just don’t understand….
We beat rivals South Carolina, Tennessee and Auburn, survived much improved Vandy and Kentucky teams (both going bowling by the way), whipped a PAC 10 team on our first road trip to the west coast in decades and are a top 10 team.
Our losses are to the 2 best teams in the country.
We will end up in the top non BCS game. Beat Tech and win the bowl, top 5 is still within reach.
… and we did all this without our dominating all SEC D Lineman (Jeff Owens), started a patchwork Offensive Line full of 18 and 19 year olds all season AFTER losing our all SEC Tackle (T. Stridivant) and our oldest player (V. Vance).
Stafford is right around his 63% pass efficiency goal, Knowshon is headed for 1500 yards, we have the best Freshman in the country in A.J. and return 17 guys next year.
Everyone wants to go undefeated. Everyone wants to play in the title game. Only two teams can. Get over it people, this is about to be one of the 10 most winningest teams in the HISTORY of uga football. We’re a good team. Florida and Alabama are just a little better this year.
Would you rather go back to the 4-7 Goff years or the 8-4 Donnan years. I want us to get better, but i’ll take 11-2 and top 10 any day.

Someone needs to be held responsible for the lack of discipline that this program has shown off the field as well as on. They have not been good representives for the University of Georgia. That person should be Richt, and he needs to do whatever it takes to get his program under control. Whether that has anything to do with changing coach(s), I don’t know. But I do know that most of the many PFs this season have come from the defense. 6 PFs in a game against a struggling team is not a good sign.

Injuries. Is there any other team in the nation with the total number of injuries to key positions that UGA has suffered through? I doubt it. These players have done a great job being 9 and 2. Let’s stand behind them, beat the Bumble Bees, whip us a Big Ten or Big 12 team in a bowl game and go 11 and 2. I am not jumping off the bandwagon just because we lost 2. A loss is a loss, no matter what the score. I’m sure the players hearts are just as heavy as the fans. Let’s back this team to the end. I think the only “fans” who are so upset, are the same ones who were trying to predict who we would be playing in the NC game before the season ever kicked off. Their opinions mean nothing to true Dawg fans.

although i understand your frustration, don’t you think that being “as ashamed in a way I’ve never been to call myself a member of Bulldog Nation” is a little harsh, if not ridiculous?
we are talking about football, not the integrity of the institution, it’s students and alumni (and please Tech fans spare me your smart comments).
i undertsand that college football has grown so large that in essence it is the display of one’s “brand.”
again, i appreciate your zeal but the behavior of 18 year olds in a football game does not bring me shame — some ribbing from rivals and friends, perhaps, but not shame.
i am not ashamed of our program or Mark Richt. so please remove “we’re” from your post…

Stepback.
There is no shame in losing to two very good teams, however, there is embarrassment in not even competing in either of those games.
It’s a shame that we have wasted the most talented WR and QB, and the 2nd most talented RB that have ever come through Athens.
I really hope that CMR will bring in a fresh face or two to bring some new hunger to the coaching staff. Seems like things have gotten stagnant.

Frustrating is the word I’d use to describe the season. For whatever reason, this team loses focus and its competetiveness at times. You can see the talent and the coaching doesn’t seem to be the issue. Many want to rip on Coach Martinez, but watching the last two games, the guys were in the right spots to make the plays, they just didn’t make the tackles. I can handle losing to Alabama and Florida when they are head and shoulders above everyone else in the league. What I can’t handle is being uncompetitive in those losses. I don’t believe by any stretch of the imagination that this team is 31-0 less talented than Alabama or 49-3 less talented than Florida. In a nutshell, this is a Georgia team that is on its way to another 10 win season and a potential top 10 finish, yet there’s a sense of dissatisfaction with the season. Like I said, frustrating.

In the BCS or AP top 15 who do you DAWGS actually think you can Beat in a Bowl Game? Utah, Penn St, Boise St, or BYU the Hawaii’s of 2008 maybe but the other 10 or so teams will eat the D of Willy UP. #13 is about where you should, but that was in a TUFF SEC not this years SEC. Good Luck on that 11-2. Like I said in the beginning 9-3, no Sec title, no SEC East title, and no shot at the National Title. 3 for 3 with one more to go. Can you keep the Players out of jail until Nov. 29th?

This is the most disapointing UGA team i have ever seen. We have never had a defense as bad as this one. This team has no discipline and that comes from your coaching staff. CMR needs to dismiss Martinez or pack his bags himself. All of this off field trouble with the police prior to the season can only hold the coaches accountable. I would not blame Stafford, Moreno, Green etc. if they opted for the NFL and avoid the risk of injury. Coach ERK would turn over in his grave if he had to witness this pitiful defense. UF 35 AL 10.

“Survivors”
We have survived injuries to TS and JO. We have survived a lot of penalties. Some warranted and some as a result of the celebration in fla in 07. Once Bama kicked our tails, the refs lightened up and the penalties are about even. (AU game was all on us). We survived being away from home for SIX weeks. We survived an OL with three freshmen and two sophs. Any other team in the country in the top ten have a line younger than ours? Not Bama. Not Fla.
We survived, and I hate to throw this in, poor coaching at times.
And last but not least, we have survived the mass media hype. Fortunately, next year I am sure we will not be ranked in the pre-season top ten.
9-2 with a chance to go 11-2 is a GOOD season. Not great. But good. Go Dawgs—Tuck Fech!!!

BORING
This season has been a total snoozer. There have been no statement games. No defining moments. Last year I watched the Florida and Auburn games over and over and over again until my wife threatened divorce. I haven’t watched a replay of a single game this year. The expectatiosn were just too high. The spectacular becomes the expected. Its not very exciting. I hope we’re never a preseason Top 5 ever again.

i am torn between disappointing or undiscplined. disappointing because for all the incredible talent, they have underperformed to their potential. yes they have are 9 and 2, and let’s not forget it. but they look unimpressive, like they are barely hanging in there. hence, they win and continue to fall in the polls. undisciplined because no matter what the coaches do to them during the week, they do stupid stuff in the games. not just over aggressive stuff, i am talking about truely stupid stuff you haven’t seen since little league. the defense looks like a mid range acc defense, not an sec calibre defense. this may be techs year. i predict another 120 yards of penalties on the defense, 10-14 points given up by poor special teams play, and the offense will struggle to block again causing matt and knowshon to run for their lives to the nfl.

It all started last year in the UGA-FLA game. When your head coach tells you it’s ok to break the rules —— all hell will break loose. Sure - it helped them win that game but what happened afterwards. The summer was spent with player after player getting arrested and then this year —- penalties and unsportsmanlike and more and more. The head dawg sent the message and now he is getting reaping what he sowed.

If I hear another UGA blogger ask if we want to go back to Goff or Donnan I am gonna puke. It has been 8 years! 8 years! Do you ever hear UF fans talk about Galen Hall days? How about Alabama fans looking for Ray Perkins? Or LSU fans talking about Mike Archer? Good friggin grief. The difference in those programs? They have won Mother Figgin National Titles! Until Mark Richt brings that Mother Friggin National Title to Athens expect to hear some critcism. Especially when you are Preseason #1! I know the injurys, the youth, blah, blah, blah. UGA has had Top 10 recruiting classes the last 5 years. Depth should not be a concern. Every team has injurys!!! Florida lost an ALL SEC TE to a knee injury, have they missed a beat?
I guess a part of the UGA fan base is similar to the Darn coaching staff. To damn soft for there own good. Some of you need to suck it up like the players and coaches. Gardner and company need to go recruit some slobber knocking football players! Higher Phil Fulmer to oversee recruiting! Please!!!

Now as far as the Tech comparisons, if UGA beats Tech and Tech beats Miami the final records will be:
UGA 10-2 Tech 8-4
Now who will have the better season? Who will have lost to much better competition ?
Florida will pound FSU and SC will maul Clempson. Where will the SEC/ACC comparisons be then?

Yea Bugkiller, you must have a mouse in your pocket, to say “we’re”. There is a huge difference between a hand raking a face mask, (was called incidental last year), not avoiding a punter, and hanging on to somebody too long out of bounds, and “thug” intent. You do realize they are all “personal fouls”? It’s just a term for a broken rule in a game, not an indictment of thier character. I’m frustrated that they kill thier own efforts with dumb mistakes, but ashamed? geeez. FireWillie…. I know our defense held Auburn to 13 points but we need a DC that has a little fire to him. Every football team has a good cop and a bad cop. Georgia’s good cop is CMR and he has no bad cop. The touchdown celebration against Florida last year proves my point of the good cop bad cop. You should never have to resort to gimmicks to get your team pumped up and CMR had to because the lack of a “bad cop” We need a mentality of when you put the red and black on you better be ready to play with a controlled rage for 60 minutes. We need a Erik Russell type DC that gets our team pumped up. On the offensive side of the ball it all comes down to the line. A good veteran offensive line makes any OC look good. Give Bobo time and he will be fine. This season has been disappointing not because we lost 2 games its just the way we lost those two games. But the season all boils down to the 29th of this month Go Dawgs and beat the hell out of the jackets.

Gatorzone, thanks and that would have been #1 & #2 if you guys hadn’t laid an egg to Ole Miss. But then again if you hadn’t of done that, would the gators still have the fire that they do now? Too many things in a season that no one will know the why to or what the outcome could have been. I still wonder if we hadn’t of been dropped week after week to start the season if we might have played like a #1 team against Bama and played with some #1 intensity week in and week out. Don’t know never will. Seems like the kids couldn’t win for winning to start the season. Win and you drop, win and you drop. How did that effect their attitudes going into the Bama game. We know how it did after the Bama game for sure.

Mazoo, I believe he means someone with a motor that doesn’t know when to quit. Someone with juice, you know; the one that’s always positive and upbeat; the person that when you’re around them makes you feel alive and purposeful. A human with those characteristics as a DC, positioned with a few good atheletes could conquer the damn world. Hell, I get motivated just talking about it!

I will agree with Georgia Fan,
BORING
Most seasons I don’t miss a play on TV. But this season I have caught most of the action on radio while I’m doing something else. I don’t know why that is? I watched the last quarter of the Auburn & Kentucky game and they were both snoozers. I guess b/c we’re so predictable and so undisciplined that it’s painful to watch.

I swore I wasn’t going to read these blogs any longer, as the negative posts, and constant badgering of the coaches and players were just too much to take. That plus the fans from other teams adding their two cents, usually in a classless way (there are a few that exhibit class while still supporting their team, General Neyland comes to mind, but I know there are others).
Are Dawgs fans frustrated? Sure they are! Just like the Dawgs’ coaches and players. They may not come out and say it in a public forum like many fans would like to see, but I honestly don’t want to see my coach or QB crying on TV. If that works for them, so be it.
Everyone who thought the Dawgs would go undefeated this year, or expect it any other year, must come to realize how difficult that really is to accomplish. In the last 15 years, 5 teams from the SEC have won the National Championship. Only one of those teams went undefeated (Tenn, 1996). They had three really close games that year, a 34-33 win over Syracuse in their first game, an overtime win against Florida and the gift from Clint Stoerner when they played Arkansas. LSU won the National Championship last year as a two loss team.
With that said, I will take a program that averages 10 wins a season for 8 years running any day. Because it always takes some lucky break to win it all (UF in 1980, run Lindsay run). GO DAWGS!!

Disloyal! The poor attitude of our fans stands out much more than the 2 losses. I would love for the Dawgs to win the NC as much as anyone. But can someone tell me how it matters so much that you turn on the coach and team you loved so much before the losses? What exactly will winning a NC do for the fans? Will you get a raise at work? Will your ex-girlfriend come running back? Will your fat a$$ suddenly shrink?

kalamazoo, i like the comment…. its just a shame that we came out so flat against Bama and Florida. Those were huge games and our defense came out flat. We have the players on the defensive side of the ball just not the right guy coordinating them. Hopefully someone will offer CWM a coaching job and he will take coach fabris with him.

The one word I would use is STRANGE. After being ranked pre-season number 1, it is very strange to see Georgia already out of the national championship picture and the SEC one. I don’t think any Bulldog thought at the beginning of the year we would be where we are. It was very strange after the great win against A.State to come back home and get blown out by Bama. It was very strange to see after a good win against LSU, to get demolished by Florida.
I don’t think there is aby doubt this season has been strange to say the least. Yet we still have a lot to play for, a 10-2 season by no means a bad season, and beating Tech for the 8 straight year would definetely help make this season seem a whole lot better. Go Dawgs!

Enough of this disingenous “this schedule isn’t brutal” crap. I believe that if you look at the combined won-loss records of all of UGA’s opponents, it’s close to if not tops in the nation. That’s including the nine losses that Georgia put on them. You can stick your head in the sand, but that doesn’t change the cost of a hotdog at a tech game. The answer is free by the way.

You are an undisciplined, mentally weak team. You should have waxed Auburn by at least 2 TD’s. Give Auburn 45 more seconds and they win.
By Victim

Victim
Victim of injuries. Yes every team has injuries. Injuries to All-American LT, which is the most important position on the OL and the back-up LT. That OL is not only young, but there are 3rd stringers in there and they are all playing out of position. Injury to All Conference DT (if not an AA). He is the only player up front who could command a double team. What would Bama be without Mt. Cody? Overhyped you say? How could any team be expected to live up to the hype losing the key players that Ga. did?
Victim of the toughest schedule in the country. Couple that with their injuries and you’ve got your season.
Victim of their own stupidity and undisciplined play. Not just the amount of penalities but more importantly the nature and timing. How would the Bama and Fla games been different had the early turnovers not been negated because of stupid penalties, thereby shifting momentum?
Victim of questionable play calling by an overmatched OC. Bobo is not ready to be an SEC play caller.
Victim of coaches stubborness. Failure to address and fix a glaring problem early (penalties). Special teams has been a joke the past few weeks. When asked if they would concentrate on that and spend more time in practice Coach Richt replied by saying that they would not spend any more time than they normally do, 15-20 minutes. We all saw how that worked out didn’t we.
Ultimately the program will be a Victim of Richt’s loyalty to his coaches by not holding them accountable.

I saw a play on the last drive by Auburn that pretty much sums up this season. #11 Ramarcus Brown was at the bottom of the screen. The problem was he was by himself with 2 WR down there. He very clearly throws up his hands as if saying “wtf”? He attempts to cover both, and of course that doesn’t work leaving an Auburn WR wide open for about a 15 yd. game. This sums up our season to me.
How many times have you sat in the stands or at home or in a bar and after a play said “what the $%^@ are we doing”?? or “what the $%#& was that”“? This entire team, including coaches has looked confused, lost, or unprepared for every game, usually for the majority of the game. Now we’ve escaped more than not but that doesn’t hide the obvious. Which brings me back to my question. What the %^$# is going on down there??

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Ok, dawgs, with the season winding down, it’s time to put the first string to work. We may not have the top offense, we may not have the top defense, but we do have the best revisionist in the nation; and we’re on this blog.
So let’s roll our sleeves up and re-write this season into a winner. We may be ranked below the Mighty Ohio State Buckeyes now, but with our expect opinions, we can have ourselves into the top 8 in a week or so.
So forget the facts, ignore reality, remember any win is a good win, if we scored last, we were coming back, with a few more minutes…The refs were paid, our running back leaps Div 1AA players in a single bound.
Just wait til next year…

the season did not turn out the way that most of the fans wanted. I think if we get to 11-2 that would be ok. considering all the injuries and what not. And for the people who blame the coachs for the kids behavior over the summer, that is not fair. The coachs don’t get to be around the players for a good part of the summer do to some ncaa rule. Second they are coaches not baby sitters.

Undisciplined - would sum it up for me.
I know that we have had losts of injuries and that could be draining on a team. However, can’t use that as an excuse. We should be deep.
It was not the season we were hoping for. I for one would feel better if the defense could put it together for one game and come out and whip Techs O-Line. They can’t pass. Just don’t let them dominate the line of scrimmage. I think the offense will come up big. If Stafford and Moreno are playing their last game they want to go out big. If not, they want to make up for a season that could have been.
I feel good about the game. We win by at least 14. Go Dawgs!

PNW, please describe what your definition of a poor attitude is and at what point you determine that someone has turned against their coach. Albeit there have been some posters that are critical but that alone isn’t criteria enough to call them disloyal in my book. This is a blog, it’s purpose is discussion, debates, comradarie, sparring with your enemies, and cleverly outwitting your opponents. PNW, let’s say you’re on a trip with a group of high testosterone friends and your driver/navigator starts going off course. Are you going to blindly continue the same direction at the risk of getting lost even though you know better because someone may challenge you, or are you going to question the directions, maybe help to get back on course.
There are a few, those who scream, rant, demand someone’s job, etc. that are uneducated, misinformed, emotional, posers, the enemey, or just plain stupid, I would say they are a small percentage though. Most of us ignore them. If they bother you call’um out and lash them, then get over it.
In the middle lies what I believe to be the majority of loyal UGA supporters, those intelligent enough to see the good and bad, recognize excellence, question lack of performance and poor decision making, ask for improvement, yes, you can improve somewhat on everything except perfection. Those who enjoy, learn, or disagree with the comments made by others. A broad range of opinions and comments within this majority, not everything has to do with athletics. A few dance on the negative edge, a few dance more on the positive side, but we’re all Dawgs. Right Altamaha (he says why’s everyone always pointing to me)?
Then you have those wearing rose colored glasses, they are singing “we’ll all gather at the river” as the plane’s going down. Somehow I think you may be in this category, if not let me know, I will owe you an apology.
To answer your question from this fans perspective, winning an NC would be fun, it would give me a rush, a sense of pride and satisfaction, bragging rights and ammunition to spar with the Gators among others, more memories for the future, pride for the SEC, and to know most of the players would cherish it for a lifetime. I’m not looking for a raise here, I work for myself, the harder I work the more I make, I don’t want my ex back, that’s why she’s an ex, and due to my incredible luck (not) my rear isn’t fat.
Let’s kick some Bug A$$ Dawgs. My Brother’s a Techie, 1980, we know what good old fashioned hate is, we get to spend TG together this year and looking forward to a competetive game. I agree with undisciplined
However, I still am impressed that despite their faults they are 9-2. Either one of the teams that beat UGA will be in the BCS title game against a Big 12 team.
I heard someone say that UGA was down to 7 offensive linemen. That has to take a toll on the offense. Usually there are five out on the field when the offense has the ball (2 tackles + 2 guards + 1 center =5) that means that there are 2 extras to give guys a rest or if someone else gets hurt. There are players on the field that were supposed to be red shirted period. It shows in some of the red zone plays. We end up with field goal attempts instead of touchdowns.
The SEC teams have some really good defenses. Most of our SEC opponents had very good defenses. Most are ranked very high in the NCAA. WE weren’t playing pansies. Tennesee had a good defense, their offense stunk. South Carolina had the same issue.
* I don’t normally talk smack to Georgia Tech fans because a couple of my best friends are former Tech players*
However, I’ve got two words for those talking smack to UGA……Gardner Webb. You guys only beat them 10-7 (in one of your home games). Even my Tech friends were ashamed of that. You paid them big buck to beat up on them, but you didn’t. You struggled to win.

I really expected to beat BAMA, why not we did the year before? But a 30 point disadvantage at the half? Because of the BAMA game I really thought it would be hard to get to a win over Florida, but I thought it would be close. I actually believed we would be more prepared because of the BAMA fiasco, but NOOO! We were less prepared, appeared less well coached etc, etc.
What’s so diassapointing is not the losses but that we have just looked like a group of guys who play stupid and undisciplined with a lack of determination and intensity. Kind of like they thought they could just show up and win.

I too have not thought Stafford was very good at dropping in a bomb and hitting a receiver in stride. Too many overthrows or throws out of bounds.
If you want to see a kid throw on the run and hit his receivers in perfect stride on deep throws check out GA commitment Aaron Murray on youtube. He doesn’t appear to be a pure pocket passer (maybe he’s a little undersized)or else his O-Line isn’t that great. But his receivers seem to never have to even break stride. And he chose GA over FLA!

UNREALISTIC…as in our fans!!! I think pj had the best analysis and seems to be level headed. Got to give it to our players and Coaches. With the ultimate goals vanquished this team has gone on the road in consecutive weeks to stadiums where we have had challenges before. They bowed up when the chips were on the line and got the job done!!! SEC football is not a beauty contest like the Dipsticks on ESPN would have you believe CFB should be. It’s fight and survive and move on to the next contest. We got beat by #1 and #3. I would say that is an improvement from last year when we got beat by SC and UT. Given our youth I would suspect this will only drive our guys to work harder. I would say that 8-4 made the Gators prepare more for this year with the obvious bullseye on UGA. I would expect our Guys to do likewise!!! Fair weathers please do not renew your tickets!!!

Examples of poor attitude: We need to fire coach so and so, the Dawgs suck, Richt needs to get his head out of his a$$, this season is a disappointment. Disloyal is leaving the game way before it’s over (see UF game) and throwing CMR under the bus because we’re not going to be #1. Take away the Herschel years and what have we done since we got away from the leather helmets that Mark Richt hasn’t equaled or bettered?
You said: This is a blog, it’s purpose is discussion, debates, camaraderie, sparring with your enemies, and cleverly outwitting your opponents. I say: isn’t that what I’m doing?
As for your driving analogy - terrible example. Why because I’ve never played football let alone coached. So I haven’t a foot to stand on. But I have driven a car and read a map.
Let me ask you - are we really intelligent for pointing out the obvious – i.e. penalties are bad? How many million dollars a year does CMR make to have fans point out what he is doing wrong? All of our coaches are better than that.
Do I wear rose-colored glasses? Nope, I just think any fan can point fingers and get sour. I believe it’s better as a fan to congratulate the team for winning and let the coaches handle to critiquing.
As for your benefits to winning the NC. Well, those are all great things with which I would like to experience. But in the grand scheme of what it add to my life it’s not worth calling out players and coaches who are working their a*******es off for my entertainment. And believe me, I hate losing to Florida. I spit beer all over my friend’s wife because she walked in my house cheering for the gators.

The old saying that says “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link” accurately describes this years Dawgs. There have been a variety of injuries, problems all around but to me it all boils down to one thing. No defensive ends. Martinez’s defense will work, but only with strong play from the defensive ends. There has been no pressure, weak containment, and overall just sub-par play from the book ends.
As I said, bone head penalties and a plethera of problems compound the issue, but if we don’t get some all star monsters on those def. ends Martinez damn well better resign or change schemes, because this one is doomed without those anchors on the outside line.

I agree we came out flat against Alabama, but we were not flat against Florida as we shut them down on all but two of their possesions in the first half. As a matter of fact we stopped them twice on their first scoring drive as Tebow was clearly down more than a yard short on that 3rd down play. Officials got it wrong, plus we then intercepted a pass which was overturned by a phantom personal foul- late hit on Tebow which if you looked at the replay it was not a late hit as Tebow released the ball and then was immediately hit. 35 of Florida’s points were a direct result of bogus penalties on us or non-calls on Florida and before you say I don’t know what I am talking about, even the CBS announcers were scratching their heads on some of the calls against us and non-calls on the Gators. Also I am very good friends with Charly Strong, Florida’s DC and he told me that was one of the worst and most lopsided called games he had ever witnessed.

Letdown. ( I don’ t think this is a word, but who cares… no other term defines the season more accurately. ) I cannot stand to watch Florida rise to the occasion… and then watch the Dogs struggle against Ky and a mediocre Auburn team. If Stafford leaves (which is likely) then we will be left to say, “What could have been?” It is sort of like the year after Shockley was gone… you had to think what one more year with him at the helm would have been like. Such is the fate of a Dawgs fan… 28 years and counting. But unlike others, i still wear the gear and i still keep the faith. Am I the only one that’s tired of hearing Richt tell me week after week that everything’s peaches and cream? It’s beginning to feel like the Bush Administration. Why can’t the man ever come out and say, “We didn’t play like we wanted to, just barely did enought to get by. You can bet I’ll be on their asses this week in practice”??? 9 & 2 could be 10 & 2 and/or 11-2 or 9-3. This record is not too bad considering the loss of key players at key positions at the end of last year. We also had suffered injuries along the line that were difficult to absorb. The Dawgs started off highly overrated based upon the end of last year which naive fans bought and formed unrealistic expectations. Mark Richt & Company continued a very impressive winning streak on the road. One of the greatest frustrations on the college scene now is the jump of jrs and sophs to the NFL. Just when they become comfortable and productive they go. You can’t blame them for the $$, but it negatively affects a programme. The Dawgs have placed a lot of good players in the NFL in recent years. Richt & co. have done a very good job recruiting. The whiners have forgotten how many poor years we have had since Dooley. Thanks Richt & co. for the consistent effort!

At this moment in time there is nothing to keep the faith in. The Tech fans are giddy and I hope we don’t end up woth Ohio in a bowl game becasue we will be the SEC team that they beat the stuffing out of.

pj, maybe I can explain it to you: While you like to focus on ‘we beat SCar & TENN, most of us would not like to compare a storied program like UGA to SCar, or compare UGA to a TENN team that can’t beat a bad Wyoming team and who is coach less. We don’t like to say, ‘hey, we beat the cellar of the SEC with 5-years of ‘TOP -5’ recruiting classes’. WOW. We don’t like to compare UGA to a bad Auburn team and worry about beating Kentucky. We don’t like wondering if we can beat a GaTech team that hasn’t had a top recruiting class since God knows when with a first year head coach. We don’t like facing the fact that we will probably lose the next 15 out of 18 years against the GATORS. Sorry. Cuss me for being honest.

“UNDISCIPLINED”
That best describes this team along with maybe immature. It is astounding how much this team loves to dance on the sidelines before, during, and after games. There they were dancing on the sidelines again after beating the worst Auburn team in a decade. Big deal. Do your freaking soulja boy ghetto dance after you beat a real football team like Alabama or Florida. Oh, I forgot. We couldn’t do that. Knowshow Knowshon danced his way out of the Bama game after 34 yards and a physical beatdown and then danced his way onto the sideline against the Gators in crucial red zone situations. What a punk!

What are those of you who are complaining most loudly about the two losses doing in your lives that is equivalent to winning the BCS championship this year? Out-performing all the other insurance salesmen in the country this year? Perhaps one of you is leading the Chase for the Cup? Maybe one of you developed a Triple Crown winning horse? Maybe Tucker will get a Pulitzer Prize for this blog entry. One coach will lead his team to the trophy this year. Will it be Leach? Saban? Urbie? Brown? Whoever it is, that means the losers all suck, right? If you have good players but fall short, you should be fired, right? In that case, how many of you should just go ahead and turn in your resignations?

I knew when the injuries started rolling in that this would be a extremely tough year for the DAWGS. I knew at the preseason that the # 1 ranking was based off a finish last year that was a pleasure to be a part of as a Dawgfan. Again, am I dissappointed, sure I am. Am I discouraged with this team, no way. I am extremely happy to have Mark Richt and his entire staff as our coaches this year. The last two games have shown some real moxie in the last quarters. Stafford, Moreno, Green, MoMass and that young O and D lines have given me much to cheer about. I hope we finish strong and finish 11-2. What a great year with the adversity that we have had to deal with. These boys are young I tell you. If you have watched a true freshmen in AJ Green with those 2 game winning catches, you have seen a talent that will be a force to be reckoned with. I have been reading all this trash in the AJC over the past few weeks. Quite frankly I am not suprised. One thing about the DAWG nation that I have never tried to defend, because I know it to be true, is that we are a bunch of pre-madonnas. You sort of can’t help it. It has always been one of the best things about being a DAWG fan. Blind adoration and aspiration! But the fans are going too far this time. I am sure once we get these last 2 games under our belt that they will settle down a little. Bobo has called some good games with what he has to work with. Has he made some bonehead calls, of course but who doesn’t? Martinez had a good scheme this past Saturday. Are you telling me that screen pass to Fannin where every bulldog in the secondary missed a tackle on him was something Martinez did? Hell no. The defense has failed to execute. It does not matter how many different looks you give or blitzes you call. If you have players who just can’t get pressure on the QB, you WON’T get pressure on the QB. Let’s put this year and the last seven in perspective for the DAWG Nation before you go calling for Bobo and Martinez’s heads. By the way, these are the same two that put on a clinic to end the season last year. They sacked and pressured the hell out of Tebow and Cox last year and nearly killed Colt Brennan in the Sugar Bowl with Martinez’s same schemes. Bobo averaged 38 points per game over the last 6 games. In the past 8 years (including this year) since Richt showed up: The Dawgs are 48-19 in SEC play. Compare to others: LSU 48-18 FLA 47-17 AU 46-17 TN 40-25 BAMA 35-29 (I see why all the excitement this year—This sucks) The DAWGS are 81-21 overall. The DAWGS are 11-0 vs. ACC, including wins over GA Tech, Clemson, FSU, VA Tech. The DAWGS are 4-2 against the Big Ten, Big 12, and Big East. The DAWGS are 11-0 against CUSA, MAC, Sunbelt, WAC, including that joke Boise St and 11-0 Hawaii. The DAWGS are 6-2 agains S Carolina, 3-1 against Bama, 5-3 against TN, 5-3 against AU, 3-2 against LSU, and 2-6 against FLA (gators suck-although you have a hell of a team this year!) The previous 8 years with partial Jim Donnan and Ray Goff: 57-35 overall record 33-30 in the SEC. The DAWGS were 5-3 against S Carolina, 0-2 against Bama, 1-7 (yeah that’s right) against TN, 1-7 against FLA, 2-6 against AU, and 2-0 against LSU. Let me say that again 4-22 against Bama, TN, FLA, AU. Good god, no wonder I was on suicide watch these years! There was no David Greene in the corner of the endzone to Micheal Johnson against AU, there was no David Greene to Vernon Hayes and the “hobnailed boot” against TN, there was no Blackout, there was no David Pollack “stripping” the ball for an interception from Corey Jenkins in the endzone while it is 3-0 in the 4th quarter against S Carolina and Dr Lou, there was no Greene to Gibson over the middle against the “all everything” cornerback Justin Miller in front of a stunned Death Valley crowd in Clemson, there was no Stafford to MoMass in Jacksonville, there was no “Celebration.” I could go on but I think you get the picture. So to all you Dawg fans out there being a bunch of whiney asses, chill out, enjoy the next few games and say what we always say, “Next year the DAWGS are going to win it all.” As for me, I have had the time of my life the last 8 years with Richt and his coaching crew-whomever they may be. 2 SEC championships and 3 appearances, 3 trips to the Sugar Bowl, a New Years day bowl every year since 2002. I wake up every Sunday in the fall now and say, “Six more days til Saturday. WTF am I going to do for 6 more days. How bout them DAWGS!
GO DAWGS!—And come on Tigers, beat BAMA for us.

HunkErdown, is it just what I want to see or do you also think our DE actually started to come along lately? Too little, too late, but they have put more pressure on, especially in the AU game. It also seemed to me that anything good in that game happened when we were in a basic 4 man front, and everything bad happened when we brought extra pressure. Fabris has put 10 DE into the NFL in 7 years. He’s got the next one in the wings we can assume.

And, moving up. We are Number 11 in the BCS. What happens if Auburn beats Alabama ? Ohio State concludes their games this Saturday against Lowly Michigan who is 3-8. Ohio State jumped UGA last week when we beat Auburn on the road who now is 5-6. Would a win over then 3-9 Michigan who has lost to the likes of 2-8 Toledo and 3-8 Purdue among many other losses equally embarrassing, put UGA back in the Top 10 Sunday ? Consistency in voting would say yes. Ohio State’s win last week was over also 5-6 Illinois and was only 30-20 while we won by 17-13 to improve our NCAA Total Defense to Number 24 in the nation for UGA. Ohio State has 2 Losses at 9-2 also with Losses to Number 6 Southern California and Number 8 Penn State neither of which approaches UGA 2 Losses of to Number 1 Alabama and Number 3 Florida.
South Carolina is already headed to their 9-4 Top 25 finish, and that game was on the road. Vanderbilt is a bowl opponent. Georgia Tech 7-3 is a bowl opponent in the very down, unremarkable laughing stock ACC. Central Michigan 8-2 is ranked higher in the BCS Rankings than is Georgia Tech. Kentucky is a bowl opponent. LSU moved up to Number 18 at 7-3 and that game too was on the road. Sure, we Lost to Number 1 Alabama and to Number 3 Florida on the road, but no other team in America only lost to Number 1 and to Number 3.
Pennsylvania State concludes its season Saturday welcoming Michigan State. If Joe Papa loses this game, they will clearly drop worse than UGA and Michigan State is not jumping UGA 4 spots behind us now.
This season is not over yet.
What if Auburn beats Alabama and then Florida beats Alabama ? How far does Alabama then drop in the Polls with UGA’s only losses to current Number 1 and Number 3 while Alabama could lose to 5-6 Auburn even in Tuscaloosa.
By ............................................BuLLdawg

None of the teams in the Big XII South have beat anyone who has beaten anyone else. We beat Number 18 LSU and I still say South Carolina is going to be back ranked in the Top 25 in the Final Polls at 9-4.
Oklahoma has to beat both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and I have little confidence in what any of these Big XII teams has ever done late in any season, ever. Trust me on this, this season is not over yet with us at Number 11.
2 weeks from now, if UGA prevails over Paul Johnson’s Tech squad, UGA will cement the $4.25 million CapitalOne Citrus Bowl New Year’s Day in Tampa against Michigan State, Penn State or Ohio State and we can and will beat any of those 3.
11-2 Top 10 in the nation.
I’m sorry, but I am not all that disappointed with the result with our Defense the NCAA Official Number 24 Total Defense against the NCAA Official Number 1 Strength of Schedule this season for UGA.
Utah has to beat BYU. Boise State is also ranked ahead of us because we Lost to Number 1 and to Number 3 only in the toughest schedule in the nation. Should these 2 teams win out, 1 of them could be our Opponent and the other will be slaughtered by whomever they play too.
This season is not over.
Southern California may not even Win the PAC-1.
And, unless Auburn beats Alabama 2 weeks from now, The SEC Championship Game is in fact the National Championship Game. Too bad that it is not us, but I never not once said we would be other than a 2-Loss Team This Season. I have not made my predictions for 2009 yet, but I do know we need to recruit us 2 Top Tight Ends and 2 Top Defensive Ends from somewhere in this great and dissimilar diverse nation.
It ain’t over. We’re still on God’s easel

UGA just had bad luck with injuries and penalties. The dawgs have a lot more talent than bama or florida, but got hosed by the refs in both game with key personal fouls. Without all those injuries on the oline and dline, and the bad calls, UGA goes undefeated easy. Next year, Stafford and Moreno will come back and the dawgs will win it all baby!!! I’ve already got the date of the Florida game circled on my calendar. They’ll lose all their talent next year and the dawgs should win that game pretty easy.

Taking the longer view, I don’t see that UGA’s program is much closer, if any, to Florida than it has been. Forget all this bs about beating UK, GT, or Vandy. Florida is the competion, the class of the SEC East. To me, until UGA equals or surpasses the Florida program nothing less will be acceptable. That appears to be a remote possibility with this coaching staff as it stands now. Equality in recruiting has not translated to equality on the field.

one word, defenseless. we hav not stopped anyone all year. Auburn struggles all year and our game plan keeps them in the game. i think Coach Bobo and Coach Searls have done a good job considering the injuries on the OL, rede zone play calling is questionable. but poor defensive game planning, especially in the secondary.

I feel the team has shown a lot of heart by gutting out these past two wins. As dissapointing as the Florida loss was to the fans, I can only imagine how deflating it must have been to the players. This is their TEAM, not the fans’. It’s been a weird year, no doubt, with crazy injuries, inconsistancy, and at times simple poor play, but now is the time to stand tall and support the TEAM because they need the fans behind them to smash Tech like they need to be smashed.
I do feel that too much talk about injuries is akin to making excuses, but I can’t help to wonder how well Alabama would have played us if they were missing Andre Smith, Mount Cody and their LB McClain (which is the equivalent of our missing Sturdivant, Owens and Ellerbe (who hasn’t been the same since returning). And what if Florida was missing Spikes, their OT Trautwein (SP?), and their best DL (yeah, Ellerbe played against Fla, but see above)?
But that’s all past now. It’s time to focus on the Dawgs’ future, which surely contains a National Championship or two. It must.

Lucky- to be 9-2
Undisciplined- Can you imagine where this team might be had they played smart, disciplined football during the Bama and Fla. game?

Survivors! With all the injuries and problems we have encountered. The season hasn’t lived up to the hype but it is still a very good year! 9-2 so far and tech and a bowl to go! Go DAWGS!

Too conservative and undisciplines. Those are the two reasons that the UGA Dawgs aren’t playing in the SEC or NC game. Teams like FLA and Al. go for it and they play. UGA practically play to lose. They don’t go for the kill and the bank on getting the first down on 3 plays verses every play. By doing this, UGA turns it over on downs because they always get penalties on 2nd or 3rd downs. Why do your QB, Running Back, and Wide receiver lead the SEC in stats but you only outscore your opponents by 2 points this season. Richt coach to win games 7-0 verses trying to put it away early. They have the best option for play actions meaning that you could devastate teams by throwing on first downs in which UGA only does that 5 percent of the time. They didn’t beat the main teams they should have and maybe would have loss to Ole Miss. They only beat a horrible Auburn, LSU, SC, Vandy, and got slaughtered by the top teams. Typical UGA style. Also, when is the last year that UGA beat Florida and Tennessee both in the same season? Any Objections?
