UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Auburn has edge in desperation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from Auburn, Ala. I’m sitting here in the press box at Jordan-Hare Stadium, high above what they now call Pat Dye Field. Technically the venue is called Pat Dye Field at Jordan-Hare Stadium but I have yet to see anybody refer to it as that in print.
Every time I come here it makes me think about the Vince Dooley debate at Sanford Stadium. All due respect to Dye but he never won a national championship. If you can name the field after him certainly Dooley is worthy. And Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium has a nice ring to it but, as I mentioned, I’m not sure how much actual use would come of it. If it was Sanford-Dooley Stadium there would be no avoiding it.
The conditions here today are very similar to what we saw last week at Kentucky. That is, it’s an extremely blustery day. Winds 13-15 mph and gusting up to 25 mph. Whether that’s a bad omen or not I can’t be sure. The windy conditions certainly didn’t help Georgia’s passing game early on against Wildcats. I was talking to Eric Zeier a little while ago and he said was throwing the football on the field before the game and anything thrown toward the Georgia sideline going toward the end zone marked “Auburn” was being knocked down by the wind. “But Matthew has a little better arm than I do,” Zeier quipped.
Today’s game is huge for Auburn. The Tigers, who lest we forget were picked to win the Western Division, need one more win to become bowl eligible. You can bet they like their chances at home today better than in two weeks at No. 1 Alabama. And they claim to be very motivated by Georgia’s blackout in last year’s game, particularly the dancing to Soulja Boy late in that game.
So give Auburn the edge in desperation. Georgia certainly gets the nod on offense. I have no idea what to expect on special teams anymore.
We’re about ready to go here. Let’s see what happens.

AUBURN BLOCKS UGA FG ATTEMPT
Well, there’s my answer on special teams. Dogs execute nice nine-play drive down to Auburn 3. Settle for 20-yard FG attempt and it’s blocked. Blair Walsh now has missed six of his last nine.

Forget field goals and even extra points. Touchdowns or nothing from here on out. Special Teams Coach NEEDS to be fired before 2nd half starts. CMR…might wanna spend more than 20 min on special teams next week. We can’t win a conservative smash mouth field position game because we are not discliplined enough. We need to open it up…wide open…Auburn can’t hang with that. We’re beating ourselves, and playing their game. We can’t lose this one…Hunker Down Dawgs!

AUBURN 6, GEORGIA 0
Mario Fannin catches an intermediate pass and turns it into a 52-yard touchdown with 0:14 left in the first quarter. Tigers bobble the snap on the PAT and never got off an attempt.
The score was set up by a double-whammy special teams breakdown. The Bulldogs roughed the punter trying to block the punt in the end zone. On the other end of the field, Prince Miller muffed the punt and Auburn recovered at its 48. The Tigers scored on the first play from scrimmage.

I’m sorry, but I will have to say something about officiating. On our first drive, in the endzone there was clearly pass interference on Auburn. The receiver had his hands in the air and the defender had his hands all over him. Then on our next drive, they call offensive PI on MoMass. The penalty on Jones for a personal foul was a poor call also. In each case, these were drive killers or drive extenders for AU.
We DO MAKE TOO MANY MISTAKES. But it is easy to see why the team feels snake bit.

I know it’s early, but the same problems we have had all season are occurring again…special teams & defense. Auburn is a terrible offensive football team yet our miserable-undisciplined defense is making them look like world beaters. If Richt wants to continue making excuses for lack of production on defense and special teams horror, then this is my proposal to him. Make changes at both positions or take the responsibility for paying a portion or all of their respective salaries (Martinez & Fabris). I want results not excuses!

This is so hard to watch. We’re just clueless on offense. So far, we have 3 plays, and Auburn has figured them out. Handoff to Knowsohn, Pass deep, QB draw. Where’s our tight end…can we not throw over the middle once or twice…dump off to a back…give them SOME kind of different look. Put Samuel in for a play or two…see if he can make something happen. Anybody else watching this on RAYCOM HD with game sound, but no announcers voice? Just curious.

Just my two cents on ONE of the many penalties…it looked to me that Rashad Jones just let the Auburn guy go when they went out of bounds, he was gonna go down either way because of his momentum and the angle the defender had on him. HALFTIME: GEORGIA 7, AUBURN 6
FWIW, our Jeff Schultz predicted a 9-7 Auburn win before the game. I think he was being facetious at the time… .
Interesting how momentum plays such a big role in college football. The Bulldogs were moving the football at will before all the special teams breakdowns led to Auburn’s touchdown. Since then Georgia suddenly can’t run the football. Other than Moreno’s 35-yard TD off a screen pass the Dogs did little in the second quarter.
Penalties and special teams breakdowns continue to be Georgia’s bugaboo. The Dogs were called for three personal fouls in the first half: Late shove out of bounds on Reshad Jones, something on Richard Samuel on an Auburn kickoff return and a facemask on DE Jeremy Lomax. Also a roughing the kicker, a muffed punt return and a blocked field goal. Dogs should feel very thankful to have a lead after all that.
Georgia leads total offense 203-134
Moreno has 92 yards on 12 carries, plus the 35-yards receiving.
Stafford 6-of-11 for 110 yards and a TD.

The defense has actually stepped things up a little today………..IMHO..but we’re still not stuffin’ people. I don’t know. I’m not smart enough to call for people’s heads. I don’t make 2+ million a year. I am one of the first to criticize WM and the defense. However, I think we should keep this season in perspective. Yes we are disappointed because our expections were so high this year. No SECC and no mythical NC game has been tough when coming out of last year it looked like the program had turned the corner on this. But we need to remember we’ve lost two games this year. Our offense has been playing great. We should be in a BCS bowl if we don’t stumble here at the end. All in all that’s a pretty good season.

Sorriest play calling I’ve ever seen!!2nd and 6 run, 3rd and 6 run, both are slow developing plays when Au had 7 men in the box. Then on 4th down you throw the low percentage 30 yard pass. I don’t get it!! Whats wrong with throwing a little pitch and catch for a 1st down? So frustrating!!

BCS, hard to disagee with you, but I will. As it turns out, we have only played 2 good teams all season and got blown out both times. We have barely beaten very poor teams all season. We don’t deserve BCS Bowl even if we do win out

I’m liking what I’m seeing from Mark Richt during this game. I don’t think I’ve seen him coach as passionately on the field as I have today. He went after Prince Miller for taking off the helmet and he was talking to Logan about how he carried the ball on that return.
Replay showed AU lost the ball…don’t know if the whistle had blown or not.

Cincy,
I know…the blowouts. You are right that we looked really bad in those. And we have looked bad in some of our wins too. But the bottom line is that we were never as good as the hype. Our offense did perform well even with our makeshift, young line. It was the D that really failed to perform. I thought it was coaching, but the players say it is on them.
We have not met expectations and it hurts. I won’t say we don’t “deserve” a BCS bowl game though.

GEORGIA 10, AUBURN 9
Dogs add to their lead on a 27-yard field goal by Walsh with 1:48 left in the third quarter.
Score comes on drive of nine plays for 41 yards. Georgia stalls deep in Auburn territory and fails on a pass on third-and-seven from the 10.
Dogs had a fourth-down conversion to keep drive alive and Massaquoi’s 25-yard reception got them into scoring range.

Stafford has the best arm in college football and yet the only red zone pass Georgia ever runs is the Freaking FADE!!! Its like having Nolan Ryan throwing all changeups. Its a stupid play that works one time in 20 tries. You don’t throw it anywhere else on the field but inside the 15 its compulsory. I have never seen a team with much skill be so inept in the scoring zone. It is absolutely pathetic. End of the 3rd qtr, UGA with the wind erupts for 3 points. AUBURN 13, GEORGIA 10
On third and one at the Georgia 35, Auburn’s Mario Fannin took a handoff at left tackle and burst through for a touchdown. Nice move to the outside around the Dogs’ 15 yard line sprung him to paydirt.

I’ve never called for Richt’s head…like some have in the past. I’ve never even called for Martinez’ head either, but something is clearly wrong on the coaching end here. The talent level on the field is undeniable, but there is NO excuse, absolutely none, for the players’ collective lack of discipline and NO excuse for the fact that these guys just haven’t been up for these games.
It’s ridiculous. I’m beginning to wonder if Richt really has the teeth to motivate these guys and instill the necessary discipline.

GEORGIA 17, AUBURN 13
Dogs answer quickly, helped for once by the otheer guy’s penalties. Drive started on 40 because kickoff out of bounds. On first down a questionable interference call on Auburn result on a Georgia first down at the Auburn 45. Tommy Tuberville was so ticked off he got flagged for delay of game. Surprised it wasn’t a personal foul unsportsmanlike penalty considering the fit he was pitching.
Anyway, Stafford hit A.J. Green with a high laser over the middle on second-and-nine at the Auburn 17. Six plays, 60 yards in 2:41 for Georgia to take the lead.

Terrible game.
does Bobo just get bored or something? First drive, the Dawgs push Auburn all over the field so instead of sticking with that plan, Bobo decides to put in plays that don’t work…and what’s with running on third and long…especially considering Auburn could not stop Stafford and the recieivers on the intermediate pass.
As for the defense…when you can not pressure the QB, almost anyone can beat you. It also looks like the safety’s and Cornerbacks play way too soft. Can anyone say blitz? well the UGA defense can’t.
Lastly, this is one of the most undisciplined teams I have seen. Just how many unsportsman penalties can this team get…
I say fire the defensive coordinator and tell Bobo to stop trying to be too cute for his own good.

The officials you like to b*** about gave you this one by not calling the PI on the 3rd down play.
Not quite what the predictions mid-week were though…
41-17 UGA 34 – 17 Dawgs win big in Auburn Dawgs 48, Tigers 20 Georgia wins big this weekend.

In all the years I have been watching Georgia football I have never seen so little accomplished with so much talent. I sincerely like Mark Richt but I am begining to notice that his unwillingness to make tuff decisions and dismiss coaches that are not doing their jobs may signal the begining of the end for Mr. Richt. I believe we need to start seriously evaluating CMR as his stubbornness may lead to the down fall of this program. I firmly believe we need a fiery D coach to counter CMR’s laid back appoach. I also see no accountablity in this program as we are heading for being the most penalized team in the country and with numerous off field problems in the past year. There are many red flags starting to appear with our program and we have a coach who is not willing to adapt and bring in a fresh, new approach from outside the program with new coordinators.

Send Coach Lily back to Florida. He does not know how to coach his snappers & punt players on special teams. #59 Fowler had a penalty??? He dont even count he is the snapper. No one knows he’s there until he goofs up! CMR lost control months ago!!!!!!!Tell him to go tape some more commercials!!!!

Great Game, Dawgs! I’m proud! Congratulations Mark Rich! 30-4 in opponents stadiums. 81 wins in the first 8 seasons. Congrats defense. Great stop to win the game!

Hear dogs gonna wear red & yellow next game. New team colors
boy that players only team meeting sure fired up this team to go out and barely beat a VERY weak Auburn team
No more players only meetings. Hey, in this week off why don’t the coaches acutally coach up the team, stop making excuses, make some player personnel changes - wait a minute that would take some coaching changes
This team has NO HEART
Score when have to but they do not have the killer instinct. Reflection of the Head coach I think

Thank God The Dawgs won but looked pretty inept at times, I hate repeat hate the prevent defense. We tried to give the game away IMHO these Coordinators do not have a feel for the other teams and what they are doing that is why we struggle.
Go Dawgs

Absolutely pathetic. The entire team is totally out of sync. To be taken to the edge of defeat by a 5-6 team is incredibly unsatisfactory. I don’t care if it was Auburn. So what if Stafford gets god knows how many yards passing or Moreno gets over a hundred yards rushing. This game should have been over on GA’s first possession of the game. GA simply can’t seal the deal.

Conspiracy Theory folks…jump on board…I will go to my grave on ths one…The players sent a message on purpose and almost “threw” this game to further expose Bozo and Willie Vanille…this is real…Brilliant move by the players…the people have spoken…read between the lines…This is real, this is real!!!!!!! Jump on Board before the train leaves the station!!!

I’ve just figured it out! UGA has the Bobby COX curse. But I like Coxs.

I agree with previous blog - not sure Bobo screwing up offense cause I suspect Stafford is changing plays (ie qb draw on 3rd & 10) It’d be nice if one of the reporters would have the gonads to ask CMR about this - not gonna happen

News Flash - 5 Bulldog players arrested during off week in drunken brawl, sound familar(FSU). Were did CMR coach before being hired at Georgia? No discpline, No accountablity and it shows on the field.

On paper we had the better team today. Once again Green and an amazing catch salvage the DAWGS. The problem is we should not have had to salvage the game but with special teams and penalties we continue to let inferior teams to stay in the game with us. One game we will not be able to make the spectacular play and that day those penalties and special teams will come back to roost. When we play really great teams in the SEC, Florida and Alabama, the mistakes become magnified and we get embarrassed. If we could clean up the mistakes we can play with the really top teams in the country cause we do have loads of talent but we have read the newspapers too much this season and not executed what we are capable. Congratulations on being 9-2 DAWGS, but it certainly was not a pretty win and again we have become an under achiever.

Cheer up Dawg Fans…it could be worse…take a gander at South Carolina vs Florida. Back to reality…I haven’t seen such an undisciplined team since the rein of Jim Donnan. Look at the talent he went thru at UGA. Some disturbing parallels for sure. As for Bobo, unfortunately, I think this is as good as he’s gonna get. At least we’re running the toss sweep again. Still in all though, you can’t help but like our players, mistakes withstanding, Richt is truely recruiting student athletes. I don’t know if we will ever play to our full potential, but it sure would be nice.

Florida is absolutely a freakin machine 21 - 0 on S.Carolina in first Qtr. UGA and CMR has to do something cause the football program is sliding in the wrong direction.

Many of these idiots being critical of the dawgs are Tech fans. As I always need to say, I’m not a fan of Martinez. But it is now clear to me how many Tech nerds troll this blog. DAWG FANS please don’t listen to this nonsense. It may be time to put an end to this blog….

This was a lucky Ga win. I too believe the game was almost thrown to show that the OC and DC need to go back and coach HS. The talent is this team is really underacheiving and it is indded from the players not being in position, missing an assignment..etc..but is that not COACHING? I hate Tech, but i can almost see them getting a year of bragging rights in a couple of weeks if something major does not happen. Richt is a super nice guy, unfortunately that will not cut it in the SEC. I don’t care about x amount of wins in x amount of games. Talent alone can do that. We need more and if CMR can;t do that, then we need to look elsewhere. I hate the ball coach as well as saban and Myer, but can you imagine where we might be if they were in charge at UGA with all these blue chips? Just my opinion once again.

NO WAY that BAMA or the Gators have more talent than the dawgs…no way! BY THE WAY I’M a Tech fan only when they don’t play my Dawgs…THAT BEING SAID…there is a problem!!! We barley beat Kentucky and now hang own to win agaisnt Aub…RED ZONE O SUCKED…Special Teams SUcked…IF WILL MUSCAMP was our D coord I beat we would lead the Nation and SEC in multiple defensive catogories…YEa I got you..we won…Hell yes I’m diappointed this year…way to much talent….somebody needs to be fired!

OK..its GOT TO BE ADDRESSED…after 11 games why are there STILL these DUMB penalties that could have and SHOULD have cost us the game?!!! 4 PERSONAL FOULS,still jumping offsides, the wanting to draw offsides on the 4th qtr. punt and get a false start..after 10+ games its coaching…the message is NOT getting through to the players so its GOT to be addressed before the Tech game and definitely the off season…on the positive note I’m COMPLETELY thrilled with the o-line and Searels ( HE MUST BE RETAINED AT ALL COSTS ) ..I do agree that while this season has been a dissapointment considering what was at stake ,looking at the season in its entirety,to be 9-2 going into the Tech game with ALL the injuries(not using that as an excuse because injuries are part of the game) I’m not too upset..this team did not quit..this team kept plugging guys in after injuries piled up..this team found ways to win when they probably should not have..and most encouraging this team is soooo young..they can ONLY get better..I do feel that we will lose KM after this year and quite possibly MS as well but JC is just as capable of leading this team..not gonna look towards next season just yet since we got to focus ALL attention on a Tech team that can beat us..so I say its ALL DAWGS ON DECK..lets forget Auburn..its over and a win (on the road) is a win and lets not forget (30-4 road record under Richt..THAT CANT BE UNDERSCORED ENOUGH).. the SEASON STARTS NOW..Lets show up Nov.29th..its SENIOR DAY..its SEC vs. ACC..and its Tech..let your Georgia Pride show from today through Nov.29!
