UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Marshall: AU losing with good players
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Phillip Marshall has been covering college football in Alabama for 39 years. Or as he says, “I’m really old.” But he’s really not.
What Phillip is is one of the great characters in the SEC, in my opinion. He’s been everywhere and seen just about everything over four decades in this league and he’s one of the best storytellers you’ll ever encounter.
Phillip covered Auburn for the Huntsville Times for 14 years until earlier this summer when he became one of the latest scribes to jump to a dot-com. Phillip is now the senior writer for the ESPN affiliate AuburnUndercover.com. In terms of knowing what’s going on at Auburn there is nobody better.
Phillip was nice enough to take some time out of his busy week to answer some questions for us about the 5-5 Auburn team Georgia will meet Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on The Plains:
Q: So, Phillp, what the heck is going on at Auburn this season? A team besieged by counterproductive influences or just not a good team?
Marshall: You can’t win with bad players, but you can lose with good ones. That’s what Auburn has managed to do. It hasn’t recovered from the Tony Franklin fiasco and isn’t likely to this season. Since the SEC isn’t real strong, it was set up for these guys to have a good year. But when you lose to Vanderbilt, Arkansas and Ole Miss, that ain’t good. They don’t have the best talent in the SEC, but they have too much talent to be as bad as they are. To be fair, they’ve had a lot of injuries, particularly on defense. The defense was really good early, but lately, not so much.
Q: Is there any truth at all to all these rumors that Tommy Tuberville is being run off or might bolt for Clemson or some other such place? Is there a jet warming up somewhere?
Marshall: Don’t think so. All indications are he’ll be back for his 11th Auburn season in 2009.
Q: What’s the inside story on this Tony Franklin character? And how much are his DVDs going for now?
Marshall: Tony is a good guy. High school coaches swear by him and his version of the spread worked at Troy. He was a bad fit at Auburn. He should have known and Tuberville should have known. Auburn is probably the only school in the country that is paying two offensive coordinators (Franklin and Al Borges) to not coach.
Q: Have they sorted out their problems now and getting back to Auburn football? Tell us about Kodi Burns and some other good players to watch for?
Marshall: I don’t think these problems are going to be sorted out until they get a new coordinator and move forward on offense. They were bad on offense when Franklin was around and they still are. Burns has made a lot of progress. He’s a better runner than passer right now, though he has a very strong arm. Most of the impact players are on defense, if they are healthy. Tackle Sen’Derrick Marks, cornerback Jerraud Powers and end Antonio Coleman are the best ones.
Q: What about this year’s Georgia game? Based on the history of this series, sets up perfect for the Tigers, doesn’t it?
Marshall: You know, it really does in that respect. Auburn is in a similar position to what Georgia was in 2006. Georgia had lost four out of five, as Auburn has, and whipped the Tigers good. But Auburn doesn’t have Matt Stafford, who I think kind of came into his own that day. I know Georgia has had some problems on defense, but I don’t believe Auburn can score enough points to keep up. Besides, Auburn is at home, and that’s usually bad news in this series.
So there you go, word from behind enemy lines, as it were.
A reminder, Georgia’s men’s basketball team opens the season against USC-Upstate (formerly USC-Spartanburg) tonight at 7:30 in Athens. Sooner or later we’re going to have to introduce some basketball talk to this blog. Anybody interested.
Next blog coming to you from The Plains.

It’s a shame no one up here in the Atlanta area really seems to care about the Auburn game. I lived in Columbus for over 20 years and this is the biggest game of the year down there. Auburn is 40 miles from Columbus and Columbus is huge Auburn territory. Everyone down there walks around all day using “War Eagle” as their greeting to each other or as the answer to nearly every question. I can’t stand Auburn or almost anyone associated with that school. It drives me nuts that up here folks only care about Tech or Florida.
Anyway, it won’t help Auburn any that this game is being played at 11:30 AM. Their fans won’t be into it. How does anyone get fired up for a 9:30AM Tiger Walk? Hopefully Georgia comes out inspired and puts it away early. Go Dogs!

It will be a tough game. UGA’s lack of defense will make Auburn’s offense seem they have gotten their second wind. But even so, they won’t be able to keep up with UGA’s offense IF they stay true to form. Auburn’s defense is pretty good, so it may all balance out. I expect a good tight game with UGA winning by 7 to 10 pints. It will NOT be a blow out.

Ain’t it great that we don’t have to listen to the TN hillbillies this year. I hate TN worse than Florida or Tech.
OK, I overdid it there…I hate TN as MUCH as I hate Tech.

I think the WHOLE reason for our defenses woes is the lack of a dominant pair of defensive ends. We were lauding Martinez at the end of last year, but it’s because we had a devestating pass rush. We don’t have a dominant player at end, so we can’t contain on the corners. To beat a Florida or a really fast team, you MUST keep the play in the middle of the field and pressure the QB. We haven’t done that this year and it has killed us. The QB from Kentucky looked as fast and elusive as Harvin (FL). You either have speed or you are chasing it.

31-0 at the half?!!!
Well UGA fans - your season can still end 11-2!!!!!!
But with unrealistic pre-season expectations, injuries, a young inexperienced O-Line, poor coaching, special teams collapse, a defense that lost it’s identity, and two huge blowouts - your season now seems pretty irrelevant.
With the BUZZ KILLS against BAMA and the Gators - UGA proved not to be worthy of mention when talking about the ELITE of College Football.
I can sense from my UGA friends that even if you go 11-2 - it’s been a failure of a season - lost fan enthusiam at this point - going through the motions, hoping for no more embarrassment, knowing that UGA is irrelent, playing out the season.
Well guys - keep you head up! Still could go 11-2 and represent the SEC against the Big 10 on News Year Day.
And understand - historically - this is what UGA football is about. Even with all the frustration and irrelevant to the national college football scene - this will still be one of the best UGA football teams in your mediocre history.

Bama Stan, dude, please. Bama has had a great year, but where have they been in the past decade? You want to talk about “mediocre”? Bama has embodied the term “mediocrity” for the past ten years. I’ll actually pull for the Tide when they’re not playing UGA, but their fans are just plain insane. Oh and I wouldn’t get too cocky just yet…last time I checked y’all have got MSU to deal with this weekend. Do I need to remind you on Bama’s recent history with them?

CHIP,
Is Pillip Marshall an employee of Auburn (a school writer) or not?
I commented to you Monday that you would never get a real inside scoop from an Auburn writer.
Mr. Marshall may know a lot about Auburn in general, but the only thing that is going to keep Tubberville at Auburn is a SIX MILLION DOLLAR BUY OUT!
Three million to be paid within the first 30 days and the other three million within 365 days; trust me Tubby does not mind being fired.
Tubby would find a job today if fired, and thus the $6 Million buyout is the rub.
Do powerfull Auburn donors and insiders want Tubby gone, and does Tubby want to be gone, the answer to both questions is an emphatic YES!!!.
But if Auburn fires him they pay, and if Tubby quits he don’t get the proverbial (Lottery Hit) as the “ole ball coach” said concerning Phulmer’s buyout.
If Bobby’s bank was not about to go under, Tubby might be gone. Any one who has Tubby’s record and has beat AL 6 games in a row would be an Auburn ICON, in most cases.
But the Auburn Sanhedrin Court was embarrased by Jet-gate and they will not be satisfied until Mr. Tubberville is long gone.

Here’s hoping Auburn’s terrible offense scores 30 points or so, rolls up more than 400 yards of offense, but that the Aubun defense gives up 45. Maybe another subpar outing from the defense will help Richt realizeit will never be play up to its potential as long as Martiniez is the coordinator.

Atlanta Gator, They are both scheduled to show up at Jordon-Hare tomorrow morning. Whether or not they play is a different story I guess as a Georgia fan we are just waiting to see which team shows up. Haven’t heard much talk from the defense this year till this past week or so. Hopefully the talk will ignite a fire under them and get them going. Auburn always plays us tough no matter the records or rankings. Either we come out flat and flounder for 4 qtrs or twe come out on fire and keep the intensity going. Personally I would like to a blow out. Run the score up and let the reserves play to get experience. get some intensity back like we had last year. Personally I didn’t think we would run the tables this year with the schedule we had. Even with UT and Auburn being as down as they are those are still tough SEC games. Like a lot of fans it isn’t that we lost to Bama and UF it is how we lost. That’s what hurt the most. I don’t like to complain about any of the wins because you take them when you can get them. The kids will learn from their mistakes and move on. Good luck against the SOS this weekend.

Great post, DawgGirl. I couldn’t have said it any better. BAMA fans are so pathetic. They have basically had their heads down for the past 15 years - all of the sudden they have one decent year during a very down year for the West, and get one win in the past who knows how many years against UGA and they get this unbelievably obnoxious arrogance. It is kind of funny and ridiculous… But definitely pathetic. BAMA fans will go back to threatening to shoot their children after getting throttled by FLA. Hey, there’s no gaurantee they’ll beat Auburn. BAMA STAN, how many years has it been since that’s happened?

gdawg~zoo——You have to experience the heart-breaking disappointments to truly appreciate the big wins and championships. I still remember how the Gators’ hopes and expectations were CRUSHED by Nebraska in the 1995 Bowl Alliance championship game. Things looked a lot better 12 months later … .
Cuz——Hey, Dawg, whassup? I feel badly for you, Dawg fan, but I’m pretty happy for Big 15 and the Gators. If your kids take care of business for the rest of the season, good things will happen … besides, stomping on Ohio State in a nationally televised sporting event can be a lot of fun. Bama ,Beat us to death. But sorry every one, without the officials cheating on numerous plays, the Tebow mark on that first possession, they would have punted 4 of there first 5 possessions while we punted only 1 of 5 possessions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Between missed chip shot field goals and receivers running wide open with nobody within ten yards of them(Tripp Chandler)we had definately out played them till midway 3rd quater when Joe Hadin was burnt on the fake by AJ Green and did what you should do grabbed him across the waist, instead of first down for us inside there 30 they are awarded a TD to give them a three TD lead.Which aloud them to not have to play 8 in the box up close because the lead was so big, then they dropped there linebackers much deeper in coverage knowing we were not going to run as much. There next TD there receiver grabs Asher Allen and pulls his self past him for a 28 to 3 lead.Bottom line is I know I’m going to be bommbarded by people saying I’m whining ,but when a team is given 21 of 28 points in a game I say we got raped. There only TD was after we went for a onside kick and gave them the ball on our 40 yard line. I’m going to be one of the few that believes Fl loses to BAma in which I believe they will, because we stopped Fl 4 out of 5 possessions and I believe Bama’s def is alot better than ours, and so far this year Parker Wilson has played good against teams with not so good a pass rush(hate to admit it but ours for example)he will have a field day gainst Fl’s pass rush and coverage.Everybody is looking at these blow out wins by Fl and is on there band wagon but I believe there defense will be exposed before the year is still over and I will be on here chirping when they lose 3 or 4 games like they do every year.Prediction Ala 34 FL 17.

Georgia’s defense may have given up a lot of points, but that is more due to turnovers and special teams play than defensive yards per game. In that category we are at a respectable 308 yards per game. That is about what Auburn’s defense is averaging (305) and we have played much better offensive opponents than they have.
We have the visiting team advantage. But this series has a long history of upsets. It is anybody’s game.

WE ARE USC which means we contiually lose to unranked teams in the Pac 10 that we shouldn’t lose to and then complain when we’re not in the NC game.
USC fans (along with national media) claim to be dominant. They’ve won 1 BCS title since the evolution of the BCS. Prior to ‘04, their last consensus #1 title was in 1972. USC folks act like they have been the most dominant team in the past 30 years but only have 1 NC to show for it.
Put USC in the SEC or Big 12 and see how many conference championships they’d win. USC is a helluva a team, no doubt. But if they had a gauntlet of teams to face like Georgia, Florida, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. plus a conf. title game, they’d be lucky to win a conf. title more than once every 3 years.
We are the SEC. We have more BCS champions than any other conference in D1 Football. And we kick each others butt all season long.

Good points. It’s not like teams are piling up yards on us and marching up and down the field. We’re putting our D’s back against the wall more often than not. Unfortunately, they have not been able to rise to the occasion (less 4th qtr of the Kentucky game — huge defensive stops with the game on the line). WE never came close to stopping Fla on the goal line. THey usually scored on the 1st Tebow run and even then he was untouched on his scores. How do you not even lay a hand on a guy who you know is going to run the ball 100%. We coudn’t even make them go 3 downs to get in. Embarassing!
I guess all the Martinez naysayers are hoping Auburn has a breakout game offensively, which to even CMR might be the straw that broke the camels back.
Of course if we shut down a team that has been struggling offensively CMR will say we have righted the ship. WHich IMHO would be wrong.

Thanks for setting us straight you sanctimonious gasbag.
Seems like the hallowed USC program took a few decades off in the 80’s and 90’s and while your program has been very good since 2002, this year’s group isn’t much to talk smack about unless of course you think scoring 17 points on Cal and Arizona while losing to OSU qualifies as greatness.
Tell ya what, when the PAC 10 decides to join current-day college football and quits clinging to the Rose Bowl and standing in the way of a playoff system, why don’t you get back in touch with us. Until then, your energy is probably better spent worrying about winning your cute little conference. Doesn’t OSU control it’s own destiny?

Looks like USC is getting ready to have a bumper crop with this next signing class. 4 of the top 14 high school players in the nation according to Rivals.com are set to sign with them.I wonder how their fan base settles for less than the NCG with the talent they get? It’s all about coaching what you got.

Steviejoe,
Congrats on your Sept 27th victory over UGA. No team has ever gotten more out of a single half of football than the Crimson Necks.
Unfortunately you will have to start earning your ranking beginning with the SECCG. My guess is that your season is going to turn ugly pretty quickly.

Does 21-14 to La Monroe ring a bell? Or how about 17-12 to MSU? One good season in the past 8 years and ya’ll are coming out of the woods (literally). Take your Bama bangs and your double name back to the time warp known as Alabama.

Hi Dawg Group- Nice to see most brought their shotguns. Birds or Tigers? Understand from years past experience that the bird tastes better, although sometimes “chewy”. We should ask UgaVII not to slobber all over it when he fetches. But this year, I would’nt mind a striped shammy cloth to wipe my hunting truck down. What’s the name of that overgrown raccoon anyway?
There is a rumor that Tubby is going to secretly fly by Hawg Air( they changed their name from Pig Fart Air) to Fayetteville and visit with a rich alumnus and the school’s President about Petrino’s job. Just a rumor, mind you.
I won’t forget the last minute TD after we had Auburn beat 3 yrs ago. In our stadium. That horseshoe doesn’t fit this year.
ES- We hear you on the FU game and pretty much agree, but you have to be careful about the interlopers on here. They would like to characterise your words as “full denial” and they really do think they won the game by beating us. They don’t know what we have seen and expect from the Dawgs and they don’t buy it as a “snakebit” “off” day. We know. …and I respectfully suggest that we roll it up and smoke it for next year. Then they will have a clue after we kick their silly butts. I have had a grand year that will last for years to come when their Crier says he and the FU fans “will never forget” last year’s beatdown, so no matter what happens each year from here on out, that bone will gag in his throat and the FU fan’s throats for years and years. I will die with that quote on my brain and a smile on my face long before he dies remembering that same put-down without a smile on his face. Because he said he would “never forget”. Read the back stories with quotes from Richt and players this week on the Martinez thing and give it a rest. Bring it up again after the season is over. Many of us don’t agree and it saddens us to see people emulate FU fans and their Zook morass. The “firing” website should be the candidate for a trojan horse.
I wish you all a “GoodDawg” weekend. BEAT AUBURN!
UgaVII- It’s OK to leave a little present on their field this year. …and NO CROTCH BITING. You could get an infection!

Did Somebody Mention BCS Bowl For The Dawgs? LMAO!!!!!!!! I smell an upset brewing. Willies defense will be embarrassed and CMR will use the ole feel good excuses about poor field position or poor special teams play. Lets see if softy Richt gives the team off a few days for bowling ,swimming and basket weaving before they take on Tech. I bet that will happen so the little puppies can heal their wounds and form bonds amongst themselves.

Ole Dawg, The fact is it was the same group of officials that we got upset with us after the celebration last year.Has nothing to do with being snake bitten or a off day. When we did the Tebow Review Challenge, that was not a missed call it was what I said it was replay officials out right cheating. The same with the inter for a TD that finished the game off,Danielson(the commentator) not a Ga fan said before the replay that Haden in his exact words got away with one.WE GOT CHEATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!I’m not saying we would have won without the cheating, the bad thing is we will never know, the officials ruined what could have been a classic game. But when officials gives a team 21 of 28 points ina game I’ll never let a gator say they dominated me.

Bama Stan has a big mouth. I bet he will not be running his inbred mouth after the Gators wear his little Roll Tide team out. You are going to be embarassed on national tv. If you Auburn should beat you then you will go to a lower teir bowl and probably be ranked lower than UGA., Lets see, you barely beat Ky, barely beat LSU and had a close call against a no name team I can not remember. Did you see what the Gators did to KY and LSU. You are going in for a beating my inbred two-teeth friend. Bama fans have lived in the past so long it is ridiculous. You do have a pretty good team. You are vastly overrated. I am proud to be a Gator. I have lived in GA most of my adult life and I do not dislike GA. I pull for UGA every game except one. My wife is s UGA graduate so I guess I am fan that sits on the fence but I do think I am a voice of reason. You come on this blog blasting the dogs. Where were you last year? I guess you were kissing your sister crying over getting your a** handed to you by Auburn again. The Dawgs beat you and you definately were not talking trash then were you? Almost every Bama fan still lives for the Bear. Bear was a giant of a man and is a legend. He deserves that status but this is a different era. You have a good coach now but will he stay? Then you are back to square one talking about the good ole days with the Bear. Unlimited scholorships, no academics and a Coach that was a dictator. Those are some of the reasons Bear was a great coach. If the Bear coached in today’s game you would be running him off. You had one decent team after Mr. Bryant left. Year after year of mediocrity and pourmouthing but you have the audacity to come on this blog and blast another team that is not even a rival. You are a classic case of a Alabama inbred redneck carrying a roll of toliet paper and box a tide. Where did that come from anyway? NO CLASS BAMA STAN. Go back to Walmart and complain that the 3X t-shirt you bought your wife does not fit her. Go Gators and this week I can say Go Dawgs.

Monty: So who is “coaching what he has” better than Pete Carroll?
Pete Carroll has the best record in college football of all active coaches with 5 or more seasons 85-15 (highest winning percentage in the NCAA FBS). Under Carroll the Trojans have never been beaten by more than 7 points. The Trojan’s are currently the #1 defense and #12 offence in the NCAA FBS. Carroll’s Trojan’s have:
2 National Championships (2003 AP, 2004 BCS)
6 Consecutive Conference Championships (NCAA RECORD)
6 Consecutive BCS Bowls (NCAA RECORD)
6 Consecutive 11+ win Seasons (NCAA RECORD)
Best BCS Bowl Record 5-1 (only loss by 3 points to Texas in the 2006 Rose Bowl for the NC)
Highest Average Final Ranking since 2002 (Never less than #4)
Longest winning streak (36 games 2003, 2004, 2005)
3 Heisman Trophy Winners

USC — Play a real schedule on an annual basis and then see where you stand.
We’re not saying USC sucks because they are they are best team in the NFC or AFC West. Seriously, USC is awesome. But it would be interesting to see how well USC would do if they had an 8 game schedule against SEC or Big 12 caliber opponents along with 1 or 2 non-conf games against a formidable ACC or other BCS conf. opponent. I’m sure USC would be just like UGA, LSU, etc. and competing for the SEC title every year, but no way in hell would they dominate the SEC they way they do the Pac 10. We all know how well USC does. We see it on ESPN every 5 minutes. Don’t forget your loss to the 41 point underdog Stanford. Even Miss. St. would beat Stanford.

I appreciate your considered response and I will return your courtesy.
I will not argue the Trojan SOS is weak this year, and the PAC 10 is down. I think that is reflected in the polls. However you seem to be under the false impression this is the norm. Nothing could be further from the truth.
USC has averaged the #14 ranked SOS over the 6 years prior to this. This is the weakest SOS since being #1 in 2002. 2002 #1, 2003 #19, 2004 #7, 2005 #8, 2006 #7, 2007 #29; 4 of the previous 6 years the Trojans SOS was ranked in the top 10.
So I don’t think the comment play a real schedule on an annual basis is justified.
Good Luck in tomorrow’s game.

Not sure CTT is the right man for AU anymore. Tubbs still seems bitter and harbors resentment from the Jetgate episode with Petrino, as well as not being popular with some powerful alums. There has been a stalemate between coach and University. Tubbs won’t quit, he owe’s them $$$, they won’t fire him, they owe him $$$. I don’t beleive either party is really happy with the other at this point. Have also heard that CTT was pretty much forced to hire Franklin. AU now has two former OC’s on the payroll.
My take is CTT is going through the motions and hoping for a buyout. If he loses the next two I believe he’s gone.

We are USC , Talking about strength of scedule how many Pac ten teams have played in BCS games other than you during these last 6 years try one.2002 when yall lost to Washington State that is the only other Pac ten team to play in a BCS game. That 5 and one record your so proud of who have you beat in them games?4 Big Ten teams that two of them were second choice Big ten teams due to the first place teams playing in NC games, and what has the SEC did to there first choice teams?Total blow outs. You have split one game a peice with the Big 12.Like I said before stop losing to 7 loss Stanfords and 6 loss UCLA’s,and 3 and 4 loss Oregon State teams.Bottom line is the PAC TEN sucks and your going to be up there every year.USC=ONE BCS CHAMPIONSHIP> be glad because the SEC has never lost in BCS Championship game and the way Auburn blew every body out that year had yall played you probably would have no BCS Championships.

Brad Lester, 5th year Auburn senior tailback who has rushed for 336 yards per season for 5 seasons now and who has 278 yards rushing this season despite having missed only the 14-12 win over the vols all his senior season, guarantees…“I have no doubt in my mind,” Lester said. “We should beat both teams by a good amount of points. I feel real good about it. “
Tommy Tuberville beat Number 4 Florida at the swamp last season and beat Number 15 Clemson on the road last season, beat Number 6 LSU beat Number 2 Florida both at home and beat Number 22 Nebraska in the 2006 season, beat Number 9 Georgia on the road and beat Number 8 Alabama at home in the 2005 season, beat Number 5 LSU at home beat the Number 11 vols on the road beat Number 8 UGA at home and beat Number 15 vols on the road in the 2004 season, beat Number 7 vols at home beat Number 8 Arkansas on the road and beat Number 9 Virginia Tech on the road in the 2003 season.
That is 14 Wins for Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville over ranked teams in just the last 5 years, an average of 2.8 wins a year beating ranked teams over the previous 5-year period, while this season Auburn has 5 wins over all absolute nobodies.
Auburn is due 2 wins over ranked teams this season, as they always get.
Bowl game depends on Brad Lester being correct about 1 of the 2 to reach the magic 6 wins to be bowl eligible.
But, guaranteeing blow-out wins in Auburn’s remaining 2 games, by a guy who hasn’t done Shiite in 5 years at Auburn averaging 278 rushing yards total per season, seems to me to be motivation for not himself or his teammates who will now have to carry the load for his loud mouth, but for Alabama and today Georgia.
Of course, this nobody is guaranteeing not only wins over both BCS Top 10 Georgia and Alabama in his next 2 games, but blowout wins.

I’ll save that for the football field. Our astronauts have my respect and admiration and I pray the Lord watches out for them and keeps them safe. Psalm 121 for them.
Monty I am interested in the game. It is time for Auburn to pull one of their upsets. I hope it does not happen today, stick it to Bama instead. Many of us regulars blog less this time of year because we are tired of the fire, insert name, crowd that takes over the blog.
