UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

‘Cats hoping to make Dogs feel blue

Greetings from Lexington, Ky. I’m coming to you today from the closed-in press box above C.M. Newton Field at Kentucky’s Commonwealth Stadium. I’m particularly happy about the closed-in part as it is pretty cool outside today. Not sure if it will get to 50 as predicted but it’s hard to tell because the wind is really whipping. But it’s an absolutely gorgeous day for football. Clear blue skies with only a smattering of clouds, probably pretty nice when you’re running around in 25 pounds of football gear.

I’ve always thought this was one of the more attractive venues around the South. Maybe it’s all the blue. There’s blue everywhere. The walls around the field are blue. The field numbers are outlined in blue. The Wildcats are in their all-blue uniforms, the fans are in their all-blue outfits. Sort of a blue-out I guess.

I was eating at Malone’s last night and was pretty impressed with the number of Georgia fans in there. A couple of weeks ago, while waiting for our plane in the New Orleans airport, Mark Bradley, Tim Tucker and I were looking at all the Bulldogs’ fans there and talking about how dedicated college football fans have to be to follow their teams. Of course, Georgia is in Week 3 of four straight road games. But as I sit here I’m looking at the northwest corner of the stadium fill up with a pretty good representation of red, which stands out nicely against all the blue. Pretty impressive considering what happened down in Jacksonville last week.

And speaking of blue, as I sat there and ate at the bar last night, it was Kentucky fans were six deep behind me watching the Wildcats’ televised exhibition game against Ouachita Baptist. These people were hanging on every possession like it was an SEC game. Checked this morning and they had 23,000 at Rupp Arena. Incredible.

That said, it’s a sellout for today’s football game against Georgia, too. Tailgaters were out in good numbers and they’re pretty excited about their football team, which stands to become the first UK squad since Paul Bear Bryant’s in 1949, ‘50 and ‘51 to go to three straight bowl games. The Wildcats are 6-3 and besides a 63-5 blowout loss to Florida, played everybody tough, including a three-point loss at Alabama and a seven-point loss to South Carolina.

I’m very interested in seeing what Georgia team shows up here. If the Dogs don’t turn the ball over like they did in Jacksonville I think they should win handily. But they got their head handed to them last time they were here in 2006. Just ask quarterback Matthew Stafford, who left with cuts on his nose and lip and a big knot on his forehead. The ‘Cats can get after it on defense and they’ll be after him again.

That’s enough scene-setting. Kickoff is fast approaching so I’m gonna finish settling in. As always I’ll be providing updates throughout the game. Let me know what you’re seeing and hearing on the television.

Well that was fast. Dogs rip down the field in four plays over 65 yards to score the game’s first touchdown. Best think about it for Georgia is it didn’t have to deal with the red zone this time. Matthew Stafford to a ridiculously wide open Mohamed Massaquoi. Took a whole 1:42.

OK, there’s your red zone score. Knowshon Moreno runs in at left tackle from six yards out. Dogs got 73 yards in seven plays after forcing Kentucky three-and-out.

Big play on drive was a 33-yard catch and run by Moreno on third-and-three. Stafford scrambled after getting pressured and Moreno ad-libbed a route to get open.

Willie Martinez ought to wear a ski mask when he picks up his check - he’s stealing.

Yet another mid-season stretch where Willie’s D gets it run down their throats for 2-3 games until he and Jancek figure out what to do.

Every year.

Wildcats just did something to Georgia they could never do against Florida — score a touchdown.

Kentucky drives 60 yards in 14 plays to score on Tony Dixon’s three-yard yard at right tackle. 1:14 left in first quarter.

Only two passes on the entire drive, two third-down conversions and a fourth-down conversion.

‘Cats have proven they can run the football.

DOGS DON’T CAPITALIZE ON TURNOVER

Recover fumble at Kentucky 37 but fail to get first down after four plays… .

Most interesting, Dogs don’t attempt 50-yard field goal with wind at back. Not even close on fourth-and-six play, a roll right by Stafford, who three behind A.J. Green.

Momentum back with Cats.

The play calling on the last two drives puzzles me. Why all the home run throws? Run Moreno from the I formation and use your playaction pass. The shot gun formation is very predictable for the defense. Mark seems to be gambling a lot lately and he is 0-2, with the debacle off side kick from last week. I am not sure why so much gambling lately especially from a team that dosent seem to execute well. I think we will win, but because our defense sucks, it will be closer than it should.

we started the game with an agressive attacking defense. It was working so Martinez changed it. We are now setting back on the corners and they are killing us on the ground. I don’t get it. This is not the players. This was a change of strategy away from what was working.

This defense!!!!! WOW we are really bad on defense. Georgia looks lost. Willie Maretinez looks like an idiot who dosent know what to do or what adjustments to make. Also, I am beginning to wonder about the defensive players, they just dont look that good. These highly recruits we get on line and rave about are not doing anything and most of these guys played significat time last year, thats why this is so puzzling. The good thing about this is that before the day is over with Kentucky will score enough points today to almost assure that Willie will be out on his but after this season. Kentucky didnt score a touchdown against Florida until late and we make them look like this offensive powerhouse. I am really disappointed in this defensive team.

Dogs answer with four-play, 57-yard scoring drive. Stafford to Shaun Chapas for 11-yard TD at 4:48 mark.

HALFTIME

Just talking to Coach Dooley for a little while and he made some good points. Talking about Stafford, he said the wind is messing with some of his throws. Stafford was throwing with the wind on two deep throws to open receivers. Wind got under them and they ended up overthrows. “That’s two touchdowns right there,” Dooley said… . He also thought scoring two quick easy touchdowns might have made the Dogs relax a little… . As for stopping the option, Dooley said Georgia just hasn’t seen it enough this year. Expects them to make some halftime adjustments.

Some stats:

Kentucky killing time of possession: 17:31 to 12:29.

Stafford 8-16-0, 2 TDs, 0 sacks 156 yards/

Moreno 11-58.

UK QB Randall Cobb: 9-45 rushing (16 in loss yardage); 5-8-0, 45 yards.

Total offense: Georgia 223 to 171

A.J. Green doesn’t have a catch. Massaquoi has three for 59 yards. Moreno has three for 40.

By TW

November 8, 2008 2:21 PM | Link to this

KnowshonHauls - AND VanGorder made the offense better by making it clear that three and out was unacceptable. Coach Van put a pair on his defense - no doubt - and because it’s what Richt lacks, his presence made the whole team better.

Now our defense plays like a bunch of little sissies. 100% the coaches’ fault - because we know, with an exception here nand there, that these kids are studs when we sign them.

I bleed Red and Black, but if my son was a top HS defensive player looking to play big time Division One - It would break my heart, but I’d send him someplace else.

George and WSP Dawg…..No to both of your questions.

My biggest criticism of Stafford is that he can still not hit a receiver on a long pass. Within 15 yards he can put it in their hands…..but anything around 30 or longer, he just cannot get the ball within arms reach.

And did we bring a defense with us today from Athens? Guess not.

As a head coach Mark Rict is a great guy and he looks good on paper, but UGA fans if you ever expect to a national championship, you can forget it with Mark being the head guy. He just cannot out coach Urban Myer, Steve Spurrier, Nick saban in the same year. They all have talented teams just like UGA, but they have better coaches wich gives them an advantage. The problem is, I think the bulldawgs and their fans are ok with just winning 9 or 10 games. Also look at the calls in the past week from Rict to gamble with on side kicks against an explosive offense. He has no confidence in his defense, he is afraid to fire sub par coordinators, he players are undisciplined on and off the field, so what makes this guy unfireable????? If UGA is considered a top notch program they need a top notch coach.

Kentcuky scores on nine-yard play by Randall Cobb. Score comes after Wildcats block Georgia punt and recover on the Georgia 9. Scored first play.

Downfall began when TE Bruce Figgins was whistled for false start on first down of Georgia’s previous possesion. Stafford hit Massaquoi for a gain of at least 10. Then Moreno got only two, Stafford was sacked and a screen pass was knocked away incomplete.

Atrocious defense. Horrendous special teams. And why are we throwing a screen on 3rd-and-19?! I’m about to give up on this team. We deserve to lose, playing like this.

I believe that our players are as talented as any FBS roster in the country. But if you cannot motivate your players in a positive manner, they will never live up to their potential. 2 or 3 players playing with fire on each side of the ball isn’t going to cut it. You need the entire team one cohesive unit that plays with a chip on their shoulders, and a burning fire under their arses.

Big drive for the Dogs. Eight plays, 80 yards, score on Moreno’s 20-yard run with 3:21 left in third… .

Big play was 13-yard pass to Massaquoi on third-and-nine on the Georgia 21. After that three more pass completions — including 22-yarder to Michael Moore — before Moreno covers the final 25 yards on two runs.

This just in: Kentucky forced to punt. But Prince Miller misplays it and Georgia has to take over at its own 3.

If Owens,Studivant,Stafford, and Moreno come back with the O-line a year older, they will be inducted into the NFL South and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl. Stafford and Moreno will be inducted into the pro football Hall or Fame. Richt will get a 200 million dollar raise and adopt Willie and Bobo.

Can we please get a new special teams coach? I agree WM needs to go. The defense is playing soft, reactive football. Mimbs has one punt blocked and just wiffed another one. The punt return team is lost. Instead of taking a knee, our guy runs it out to the two. Either we have brain-dead players on the field or our speacila teams coaching staff is doing a poor job. Now KU just scored a 15 yarder due to poor special teams mistakes. How much more evidence does MR need to make a change? This is pathetic!

You know, penalties (especially the phantom ones) tend to make teams play on their heels. Part of our lack of aggressiveness may be related to the team’s perception that the stripes have it in for them. It is hard to play the refs and the other team at the same time.

Still, play calling plagues us. I think that is what’s killing us.

I have always been very supportive of our team and our direction, especially with regards to Coach Richt. However from what I have seen so far this year I must now advocate wholesale changes. This is not a product I can be proud of anymore…I love Coach Richt and respect him imensely, but if he is not ready to make some changes with the staff then it may be time for him to go… Martinez and Bobo have started to wear out there welcome here (time to learn some new tricks guys). Stafford and Knowshon are gone, let’s bring in someone that can run the spread with Logan Gray or Aaron Murray. I see what a fit it gives us, so I am ready to give it a try. I’ll try anything to get us where we need to go… Willie- I have supported you as well, but no more. Your cover-2 bend don’t break defense has to go NOW…Coach Fabris and your special teams needs to go now too! I’m not going to start throwing names out there as who should replace them, but we need changes. FAST. I know we cannot do anything until the end of the year, but I urge us as a bulldawg nation to voice our frustration directly to Coach Richt that it is time for a change.

This Georgia team probably has the most raw talent of any I have seen in a long time. Think about it they have THREE first round NFL draft picks in Stafford, Moreno, and Geno Atkins. Two great wideouts in A.J. Green and MoMass. However, this might be the worst TEAM Mark Richt has ever had. They don’t gel and come together. They have no heart, they are too busy trying to figure out who the best dancer is. They honestly deserve to lose to Kentucky today. They have been outhustled, outplayed plain and simple. The only reason they are in this game is because of raw athletic talent. Raw talent will only take you so far.

I knew we would be in trouble when Georgia could not hold a 14 point lead. So much for their lofty “goal” of going 11-2. They’ll be lucky if they don’t end up 8-4. Right now I really don’t think we can beat the Jackets. Unless Coach Richt decides to replace Martinez, Georgia is going nowhere. I still believe that Richt’s decision to publicly announce his lack of faith in his defense by going for the on-side kick against Florida in the second quarter while Georgia was still in the game has had an psychological effect on the team.

Facemask on 4th and 2. That puts a nice bow on the season. Not sure if he actually grabbed it, but it doesn’t matter. These officials hate us. How appropriate.

Wait, a D-lineman made a play. He can’t rush the QB but looks like he has some decent hands…he looks like he would do ok in one of those patented Cover 2 zones Willie loves so much.

Martinez needs to go, no doubt. No way we should be giving up 38 to Kentucky no matter how poor the field position. The tackling is poor and they always seem out of position. Lady luck answered our prayers….Kentucky was the worse 3rd down conversion team in the SEC until today…Hey Willie, you play one of the worse Teams in the SEC next week so you better start working on your fixed game plan…fix it by wednesday and cross your fingers it works on gameday…make sure you do not venture outside the box…The best part of the entire game was when the FSN annoucers said we were getting whipped by a glorified “Highschool Team” due to all the Kentucky underclassmen on the field…

So I’m listening to Hondo right now on the radio and he’s in extremely high spirits over a “scintillating” game. Sorry, Hondo. I cannot agree. It should never have been like this. There are just so many holes in our defense, I’m not sure where to begin.

Our cornerbacks are pitiful. Allen reminds me of DeAngelo Hall in that everyone keeps telling him he’s a great CB and he decided to drink the Kool-Aid.

Our D-line without Owens is a joke. How many times can one guy line up offsides? When can we expect them to provide any sort of pass rush?

How can our special teams play so vanilla? Our guys not only play vanilla on special teams, but they expect other teams to do the same! No fakes, no attempts at blocks, nothing!

The only issue today that I can’t really fault is MoMass fumbling the ball twice. Of course, he should NOT be fumbling, but it happens to the best players. I think he’s a fantastic player as evidenced by his stats today (aside from the two ugly blemishes) and has a great approach to the game. He’s got a strong chance at playing on Sundays.

You know, the team played with a sense of urgency during those last couple of minutes of the game. I don’t think I’ve seen our receivers running in the secondary like that in a while. We actually generated a pass rush too.

If our kids played like that 60% of the time, we’d blow teams out. We could lay the blame on the players. But the coaches have to get them motivated and keep them performing at a high level.

Just for the record, Florida got to play a Kentucky offense led by Hartline. This kid that played today makes an entirely different offense. Apples to oranges dude. Got to agree with Athdog above. The O-line is too young.

Why should i get another team?? The dawgs need true fans, not people who wouldnt know what real coaching is if it bit them in the tail???

You should get another team because a real Georgia fan doesn’t shrug his shoulders when his team get’s its backside handed it to it by the big Florida and Alabama. Want to measure success by being bowl eligible - go pull for GT.

So-called ‘fans’ like you are a drag on a National Championship hunt. This ain’t rec ball, sweetie - ask your husband.

As far as the special teams goes, why can’t we find a kid in the stands who can kick the damn ball through the endzone? Or at lease someone who can get it near the end zone…Ok how about to the 5 yard line? I wasted another $21.95 on the sattelite watching this one…Willie Vanillie and Bozo should reimburse all the satellite viewers and maybe we will let them hang out for another game….

As far as Stafford, I think he is going to be a great pro qb, but not really a great college qb. Case in point look at what happened to Tennesse when Peyton Manning moved on to the pros and in steps Tee Martin, they win a national championship because Tee can run, improvise and make plays when the play breaks down. Stafford has his strgnths, but he cant lead UGA to a championshp because his offensive line is not that good. If he had an experience offensibve line to block for him, he could pick a team apart. He cant escape that much, however that last td play to AJ was outstanding. I hope he goes to the NFL, not because I dislike him but because I thnk it is better for him.

Turtsnap,

Thanks..now there are two of us convinced Staff is overrated. And, why do we continually, ever week, waste plays throwing a deep ball? Today, we were 1 for 6 or 7 throwing the deep, arcing ball that most receivers run under. With Staff, there is no arc, and no chance for the receiver to run under it. Once or twice a game to keep defenses honest, okay. But don’t waste half a dozen plays a game!

Good teams are able to pull it out and find a way to win

Good teams don’t get smoked twice in one season. Good teams don’t give up 30pts a conference game.

Sadly, this Dawgs team is just better than average - and that’s it.

Fire Willie Martinez. And if the new DC ain’t got the stones to make up for Richt - then fire him too.

With what this coaching staff has had to deal with this year by way of injuries, I WILL DEFEND them.

I tend to side with coaches who have a record such as our staff has. I tend to support the way they coach, as well as the way they live.

No, they havent won a national championship (yet), but an SEC appearance every three years was nothing but a pleasure filled dream until our current staff got there. and I WILL take it. It’s just a matter of time before CMR and staff DO win the big one. How many NC does JoePA or Daddy Bowden have in ALL these years?? ONLY A COUPLE…does that make them failures?? NOPE

How long did it take Mack Brown to beat OK?? How long before Bowden beat MIAMI?? Yet, these guys ARE successful, and CMR WILL get his fair share.

WSP is a good name…since you included that “P” in your name, it guess Pulpwood WAS right about you. (and anyone who agrees with you)

Disclaimer:Been a Dawg fan for 20 years and I’m only 28 so don’t question my passion for UGA.If you’re happy with the current staff then by all means enjoy mediocrity.Within their first three years on the job Meyer and Miles have won national championships so it can be done.I feel that we are falling back to how it was during the Donnan years.Getting over the hump but needing a little something extra to be great.I can’t stand GA Tech any more than any other UGA fan but I haven’t seen anybody mention John Tenuta as a replacement if we can get rid of Martinez.I sure didn’t enjoy facing his defenses and I’m sure being a linebackers coach isn’t his idea of a dream job.Flame away.

GREAT GAME DAWGS Kentucky is a pretty decent team. They got blown out by FL as did we but they played with some emotion and their QB is going to be a Hoss. No doubt about it. We have some serious defensive issues. Thankfully they did make the two stands late which enabled us to score and secured the win. Expect the same at Auburn but I’m not so sure they can score. Getting out of Lexington with a win os a good day. Keep it up

STEPHEN RINGGOLD - Everyone on this blog has been over this stuff 10,000 times. I, personally, have never questioned Richt or Bobo. I have however questioned Willie for some time now. If you want to make excuses for him - fine. But FLA, Alabama, and countless other teams have had to deal with just as many injuries. In fact, there have been very little injuries to the defense this year. I’m not going to sit here and rattle off all the stats and the disparities between Willie Martinez and BVG and Willie and other fantastic DC’s in the SEC, but if you’d like to unveil the cloud of ignorance that obviously overshadows your view of our favorite football team - be my guest. I’m pretty sure that you’ll uncover some pretty disturbing facts. And if you want to call me a name again, I suggest you do to my face because I’ll be right there at the GT game - still frustrated with my Defensive Coordinator. I don’t give a sht about your talking monkey
