UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Don’t look now, but UK’s pretty good

Considering all the griping and groaning in here this week, perhaps it’s time to change the focus from Georgia to its opponent this week, Kentucky.

Personally, I’ve been very impressed with the Wildcats under coach Rich Brooks. Do you realize that they are bowl eligible for the third straight year under him? They haven’t been to bowls in three consecutive seasons since 1949-51. Some guy named Paul Bryant was coach there then.

Everybody knows Florida waxed the Wildcats 63-5 a couple of weeks ago. But UK remains a very dangerous team. It lost 17-14 on the road at No. 2 Alabama and 24-17 to South Carolina. So this is not a game to be taken lightly.

The big story with Kentucky this season is the play of versatile true freshman Randall Cobb. Cobb will start at quarterback — he alternates there with sophomore Mike Hartline — against the Bulldogs on Saturday but he also plays wide receiver. In fact, he’s second among Wildcats in receiving yards with 197 and is fifth in rushing with 140. He also returns punts (7 for 60 yards). He started the first four games as a receiver and earned his first start at QB last week against Mississippi State. UK won 14-13.

Kentucky won’t strike fear in teams offensively. It is fifth in the league in total offense (312.0 ypg) and seventh in scoring (21.9 ppg). But what production it has had is amazing when you consider that because of graduations and injuries, the Wildcats return only one percent of its passing yardage, six percent of its receiving and 33 percent of rushing from last year. They’ve lost WR Dicky Lyons and TB Derrick Locke to season-ending injuries.

Kentucky’s defense is what keeps it competitive. The Wildcats have a national rank of 25 or better in six different defensive categories, including red zone defense (14th), scoring defense (18th), pass efficiency defense (19th), pass defense (23), sacks (21) and tackles for loss (23). UK is also second in the SEC and 29th nationally in turnover margin at plus-six. They have several All-SEC caliber players on defense, including two from Georgia — LB Braxton Kelly (LaGrange) and CB Trevard Lindley (Hiram). Senior DE Ventrell Jenkins was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week this past week.

So as you can see, pretty good team. The Bulldogs have to be sure to let go of the Florida game and give Kentucky their full and undivided focus or else this season could really turn disastrous.

Here’s some links:

Here’s a nice feature from the Chattanooga Times Free Press on Georgia flanker Mohamed Massaquoi… .

The Bulldogs still believe all their goals are still attainable, even the BCS title, according to a story in the Macon Telegraph… .

Here’s an odd story at SI-CNN that compares BCS contenders to WWE wrestlers. For the record it has Georgia as “The Ultimate Warrior.” …

From Florida Today, Florida lineman Ronnie Wilson has apparently run afoul of the law again and could be off the team for good this time.

UK was a decent team before they lost they best play makers to injury. UK is not a good team but lets see which UGA team shows up…the one that made UT and Vandy look good or the one that hammered LSU!

I hope the DAWGS are over the FLA hangover, cause UK scares me this week. UGA looks prime for the upset. Too much Stafford,Moreno pro talk, too many excuses from coaches (WM,MR and Bobo). Not enough focus on a dangerous team. Don’t be surprised if UK springs the upset on us, we don’t seem ready for this game.

This game will be won on the line of scrimmage. If our DL can make them one-dimensional, UGA wins 31-14. If our D lets them make a big play early and/or UGA turns it over and gives them a short field, it could be tight.

They don’t have a kicker who has consistently made FG’s. But make no mistake, their DL is legit and they have 2 players in the defensive backfield who can cover receivers. Bobo has got to get more creative and spread them out because physically they can whip our OL.

Plus, it’s going to be 49 degrees and raining. Ya’ll come on up and join me. I’ll be on the 50 sitting in a sea of blue wearing a red poncho.

I just hope these guys can remember how few chances they have to play after a year of off season work outs, mat drills, etc. Why not make the most of every play of every game they get? It looked like Richard Samuel understood that this weekend. And how about trying to send the seniors off on a winning note? Am I wrong, or shouldn’t that be enough to motivate?

Good point Chip. The team needs to get over this loss quick, because Kentucky is a good football team, and in their minds they still have much to play for. We all remember what happened in 2006 when we lost to Florida, and then travelled to Lexington the next week with a hang over and got beat. I know the boys are upset about last week, but if they lose this weekend, then that is really going to sting. Also, is anyone planning on going to the game? I am a student and am planning on going, but the talk around campus is that nobody is making the 7+ hour trip north. I hope the bulldog nation is not already giving up on the season. Please people, come out and support!!!

I love all the haters piling on UGA after 2 losses to top 5 ranked teams. You should be so lucky! If we have those results year in and year out, I’ll be a happy man. I’m not one of the “If you don’t go undefeated and win the Natl. Championship, then you are a bunch of losers.” people. Loses happen, bad breaks happen, bad games happen. Winning 10-11 games a year is pretty darn good in my book. After all, we could be Ga. Tech, Auburn or Tennessee. Even Florida lost 4 games last year. When was the last time we even lost 4 games. The Natl. Championship with be great and it did hurt to lose to Florida, but they were a better team last weekend. They weren’t against Ol Miss. You jealous haters just keep coming and UGA just keeps winning WAY more than they lose. Ask SoCal what it’s like to lose to an unranked team.

Look, I love UGA! I have grown up a UGA fan and have been going to games since I was 2! But what I don’t see is a certain swagger about the dawgs that I use to see growing up. The passion for the win. What happened last weekend was embarassing! What happend to Bama was embarassing too! What gets these Dogs hyped up? We have not played well at all this season except for against LSU! Is CMR too soft on the players? The actions of the players on the field have to make a person curious. Don’t get me wrong I like CMR but I think it is time for a change and it starts with the cordinators. All I have to say is UGA better step up over this next month or we will be in big touble!

dawgs4ever, UGA lost 4 games 2 years ago. The Peach Bowl season remember? And asking SoCal about losing to an unranked team? Hey, didn’t UGA lose to a 6-6 unranked South Carolina team last year? So yeah, Dawgs better take it one game at a time. Auburn is the only game that looks like a sure win. GT game and this game against UK are not sure wins.

atl13- South Carolina was ranked 17th when they played UGA last year, so they were ranked when they played. South Carolina was ranked 6th in the initial BCS rankings last year. So, please, proceed in asking SoCal about losing to an unranked team. Yes the Dawgs lost 4 games 2 years ago, but you are talking about a season that had Joe T. as our starting QB to start the year and then ending up with a true freshman starting. Look what happened to Tennessee this year when they experienced similar type issues. I will take 4 losses anyday over 6 or 7.

I’m over the UF game! And I ask all of the other Dawgs to get over it as well. Can’t win em’ all. That’s life.

Anyways, I’m worried about my dawgs morale this week and this one could be an upset. We need to finish strong to keep those high school kids interested in the program. Maybe we can get into a good bowl with Oklahoma or another quality one-loss team. I think that will help heal these Florida wounds.

The Dogs had better get very focused on Kentucky quickly, or they will get upset by a team that they actually are better than - which probably was not the case with Alabama and Florida. There seems to be too many interviews/conversations from players and coaches that don’t indicate much concern or concentration towards the Wildcats. As a Dog fan, that worries me.

I didn’t know boxer-turned-actor Randall “Tex” Cobb is UK’s QB… I’ve been wondering what became of the boxer-turned-actor following his cameo appearance in the 1987 comedy Raising Arizona.

Guess he had some eligibility left. Judging from this video, he’ll be a tough nut to crack despite his advancing years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxCR5KA47kU

I am very proud of my cats this year. Bowl eligible for the 3rd year after losing a lot of offensive power. Brooks has done a great job changing the mindset of this program around. I am also a realist and UGA should win this game if they put the UF loss behind them and get ready for the Cats. If UGA loses focus and UK plays a perfect game an upset could happen. I hate the 12:30 Raycom game, we always suck playing games at that time. Good luck to you Dawgs and if you are going up for the game, sip some Bourbon and have a great time.

That NFL rookie salary cap for 2010 is just an idea. There’s a low probability it would happen, and almost no probability it would be set in place next year. They would need to make changes to the collective bargaining agreement.

President-elect Barack Obama hit the hot button with his comments on “Monday Night Football.”…”I think it is about time that we had playoffs in college football,” he said. “I’m fed up with these computer rankings.”… In the days since Obama’s remarks, USC’s Pete Carroll, Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Texas Tech’s Mike Leach have called for a Bowl Subdivision playoff – and Leach’s team is No. 2 in the BCS…

Having pondered the question of why the DAWGS have not shown up in either the Ala or Fla games I reason that it simply comes down to maturity. It has to be the youth of the team. With youth comes inconsistency. What else can it be? It’s not the talent. It’s not the coaches. These are the essentially the same coaches Richt has had. Injuries could be a factor although I feel talentwise we have the ability to overcome those. There is a serious lack of senior leadership on this team. That is the only reason I can think of for the lackluster performance we have seen this season.

One thing is assured….This will not be a successfull year. Finishing out against three lower tier teams and then going to a non-BCS bowl is certainly not acceptable based on where we should be. I am beginning to doubt whether or not Richt is any better than our last two coaches. Where’s the innovation? Where’s the attitude? Other than the unsportsman like play against UF last year (Yeah…I loved every minute of it but it certainly meets the unsportsmanlike terminology) What has Richt offered that we did not have before??? I think Richt is the real deal, however I do think he needs in particular a better defensive coordinator. Martinez has nine games on his short watch that we have yeided over 30 plus points. Before with Van Gorder it only happened once. Its diffcult in games like ALA. were you spot the other team 30 points that makes it tough on the offense.I mean I don’t think we need to do like Auburn and make changes in the midst of the season, but I really do think a change is needed.

The Dawgs are currently favored by -11.5 against Kentucky this weekend. The bad news for UGA fans is that the Dawgs are 2-3 ATS this season when favored rarely covering their spread. Early games don’t tend to bode too well for the Dawgs. They were -17 vs. Vandy and only won by 10. Also it’s tough for a college team to bounce with a big win following a blowout loss. UGA last year lost to Tennessee 35-14 and it took them a field goal late in the 4th quarter to ice the game 20-17. LSU struggled vs. South Carolina on the road this year finally winning 24-17 after getting blowout by Florida the week before. If any of you are betters, listen to what the media has to say about this match up. If they talk Kentucky up and downplay UGA, go with UGA plus the points. If the predict Stafford and company to bounce back, go with Kentucky ATS. If they talk up both sides equally, stay off the game.

One question concerning the poll and story on Richard Samuel and Caleb King…why does Caleb’s lack of blocking warrant a change, but A.J. Green’s poor route running and no blocking doesn’t warrant less playing time? Just one example is last Satruday if AJ blocks on a Moreno run, we score a TD, replay shows him just going in a circle between 3 FL players and makes no contact with anyone. AJ’s a great receiver and Caleb is a great running back, just don’t understand the difference.

3) Dr. Morpheus……..MoMass has given 100% on each and every play. Did anyone notice that he made 2 of the 3 tackles on the picks that were thrown? Even made the tackle at the one after Haden had held AJ and broke in front of him for the pick and long return. Dawgs are gonna miss MoMass next year. And Tech better get ready for MoMass. BE#3 I wouldn’t be caught dead going on another team’s board acting as if a big win by the my guys turns my stupidity into cleverness. That’s a good way to make your school look ridiculous.

The dawgs struggle against weaker teams and are destroyed by good ones. Should be quite a barn-burner in Lex. Bet Raycom (Jeff-Pilot-whoever)is bumming they got stuck with these crappy teams.

At least we can all play the new drinking game whereby we all take a shot every time KM takes himself out of the game in the redzone.

The dawgs still think they are alive for the SEC or the BCS? Good God!! If the UA and UF games didn’t humiliate us enough - that headline ought to do it. Too bad they din’t show up when these goals were actually there for the taking. This season can’t end soon enough.

Bowl Czar….I would say Tech is the S. Carolina of the ACC but Carolina can actually beat UGA every few years. When was Clemson’s last ACC championship? When has Clemson played in a BCS game? Has Clemson beat Georgia in the past 20 years? Hell, if Georgia was lucky enough to be in the ACC like Clemson, it would be like the ol’ days of Miami in the Big East.

I agree with someone above: “I’m over the Fla game.” Hey, this week has been shall we say, eventful (election, 1,000 pts off mkt in 2 days, et-e’fen cetera). The friggin’ FL game seems like a month ago to me! Better focus on the Kats, boys or it’s gonna be very ugly. Can UGA put a whippin’ on UK? Yes, but their team psyche may not be up to snuff.

As for a story about the BCS still being up for grabs for the Dawgs; come on, sounds like the Reverend Jim Jones came up with that idea.
