UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Martinez becomes focus of fans’ ire
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Criticism comes in a lot of forms and, after a loss like Georgia suffered last Saturday in Jacksonville, nobody is safe from receiving it. But from Day One in this forum I’ve been hearing it about defensive coordinator Willie Martinez.
In many ways Martinez has never had a chance. He followed a relative legend in Brian VanGorder and you know what they say about following legends. But it had been a tossup for Richt about whether to name BVG or Martinez defensive coordinator when the two first joined his staff in 2001 and Richt wasted no time in tabbing Martinez the position when VanGorder began his football sojourn after the 2004 season.
I’ve been a pretty staunch defender of Martinez the last couple of seasons. After all, the Bulldogs have averaged 10 wins his three seasons overseeing the defense and never finished worse than 18th nationally in total D. But he has become more difficult to defend this season.
The Bulldogs have famously given up 128 points in games against their three highest ranked opponents this season — Alabama (41), Florida (49) and LSU (38). You can argue the offense didn’t help the cause in the two losses but, still, it’s the defense’s job to keep the other guys out of the end zone. With nine returning starters and a collection of other highly-recruited talent, Georgia is 11th in passing defense (217.6 ypg) and ninth in total defense (306.7). Worse, it is giving up 23.4 points a game. That’s 10th, or third from last, in the SEC this season.
The points allowed continues a disturbing trend under Martinez. The Dogs have actually given up more each year — 16.4 per game in 2005, 17.6 in ‘07, 20.2 in ‘07, now 23.4.
Here’s the bottom line, though. Even if it remained there the rest of the season, which it shouldn’t, it’s highly doubtful coach Mark Richt would make a change. He has repeatedly defended his coordinator and has always been outspoken about staff continuity being important to continued success. Besides, there is still a very good chance Georgia could finish the season 10-2, 11-2 with a bowl win. If so, that’s not exactly a colossal failure of a season.
So I put it to you, the all-knowing blogosphere. Do the Dogs need a change there or just a change of attitude?

In the meantime, Kentucky awaits and the Wildcats are pretty good. They’re eyeing a win over Georgia as a way to improve their bowl opportunities… .

As has been stated numerous times, it seems that Sweet Willie is unable to motivate his players, nine returning starters, this defense should be hitting people in the mouth, we do not have a leader on the defensive side, we wait and react rather than attack,we do not play with any fire or passion our defensive backs play like they are afraid of contact and yet they still get burned and are consistently out of position to make plays, I think it is time to take a serious look at other options for DC, we are better than the stats say, and that all comes back to coaching, Sweet Willie will make a great high school coach…

I think your right that he will not be making any coaching changes soon. With that in mind I believe they need to look at their approach to practice and what they are practicing first and foremost. I also believe there are a variety of “little things” that the team does not do well, i.e. kickoff coverage, proper personel on special teams, burning unnecessary timeouts, etc…
Since there will be no coaching changes then the best scenario is that they will reinvent what they are currently instilling into the team.
I believe there is a need to change the “mindset” of the coaches and that will reflect upon the players.

Bring VanGorder back (he might be available now based on his current coaching record) and find a high profile OC. We’ll be no better than “above average” unless we do.

The yin must have a yang to be complete.
Richt’s soft spoken compassionate demeanor needs a terrorizing take no prisoners monster to play bad cop. Even Dooley was at his best with Irk.
Champions relish defeating their opponents. Kicking them when down if necessary to keep them down and prove their point. Under this merciful forgiving coach, I’m not sure we’ll ever develop this attitude. He needs to make a deal with the devil.

All you idiots that have defended Richt for years are reaping what you sowed now. He is the coach to raise us to national stature, not historical stature. He will never beat UFaG with consistency, nor will he ever deliver domination on par with our talent. He is soft, and his other weaknesses are compounded b/c of it. He will forever be satisfied with 10-2. Anybody paying attention coulda seen the warning signs starting in the Sugar Bowl against FSU.

CWM needs to put more of an emphasis on tackling. The idea behind the Defense he runs is to stop them in the red zone and they are not even close to doing that. They are giving up way more TD’s than FG attempts.
If CMR doesn’t want to fire CWM than maybe he ought to take more of an interest in what is going on over there on Defense b/c we can not continue to get blown out in big games. We have to much talent for that! Something needs to change!

By Andy in Ohio
November 4, 2008 9:10 AM | Link to this
It’s certainly not all his fault, but he is mostly to blame, simply because he’s coaching that position and these things are happening on his watch. His obsession with zone coverage when quarterbacks are picking us apart, when we have more than capable corners irks me to no end. I don’t see as much blitzes of the QB as I’d like to see, which is necessary since we can’t get pressure with our front four. The main problem right now is that we don’t really have a true gamechanger on defensive side like we had in Pollack, Sean Jones, Odell Thurman, Thomas Davis, etc. The closest that we have, without a doubt, is Rennie Curran or maybe Asher Allen. Curran defintely has the stats, but does not seem to have the leadership skills (yet) that those athletes had. We basically do not have a Moreno that plays on the defensive side of the ball. Someone that gets the defense fired up and makes everyone play better.
All this being said, I’ve seen some very questionable calls made by Martinez. We knew when Tebow would run the ball in short yardage situations, yet we could never stop him. Why? The stats do not lie either. Unfortunately, Richt isn’t going to let him go. Best case scenario is if he leaves to be a head coach at another program so Richt doesn’t have to be the one to pull the trigger.

I live MR, but the dawgs seem to have a hard time lighting a fire in their belly. The OC and DC have not impressed. I would give BoBo another year, but the defense needs a change. We never play with the reckless abandon that other good times exhibit and if we are truly going to compete at a higher level, it begins with defense.

CMR won’t get rid of CWM. He’s coaching well enough to keep his job. I don’t like much of his style basically because it requires the front 4 to be in the QBs face to work. When we have a monster front 4 we do okay. If we don’t you see what we’ve got this season, QBs with plenty of time to find receivers. If we keep CWM, then our focus from a recruiting perspective is to get some big mean rip your guts out guys on the DL.
The other key thing that I feel is missing is what Master Po said. We need a head butting, get them fired up, coach SOMEWHERE on our staff. It should be one of the big three, but it isn’t Someone needs to be the guy that gets these guys ready to tackle their Mama if she’s got on the wrong colored jersey.
The last thing I’ll say on this is that we need some way to focus our defeats into the desire to kill the next team we face and the team that just whipped us the next time we play them. You noticed after last year that Florida was ready to hang 100 on us if they could. CUM spent most of his off season getting his guys ready for this game. CMR did not.

Chip, Who coaches the D-line? Who coaches the LineBackers? Who coaches the Secondary? They all need to turn it up a little…
I hate to even mention firing a coach mid-season because that does ruin team continuity. But, I think CMR needs to do staff soul-searching after the season. Is there anything wrong with being a 10 win team year in and year out? I don’t think so. Neither does CMR.
THe first principle of Goal Setting is to set HIGH GOALS. That way, if you come up a little short, you still did very well. CMR should set his goal at National Championship and “settle” for SEC East if we come up a little short. By setting the team goal at winning the SEC East, if we fall short, we’re mediocre. Set the expectation of Nat’l Champs…attidude is EVERYTHING!!!!

FREE WILLIE - FIRE BOBO I understand continuity in a program but as in business, job security is a production killer. As CEO, CMR needs to stop relying on the fuzzy accounting and hold his staff accountable. There will be no bailout after this. As a side note, we should clone Curran, that kid plays full out every play. Reminds me of Blue as far as intensity and heart. What happened to the feared Georgia defense that showed up every down. No pash rush, confused and slow cornerbacks, slow safety play. It’s like watching boys among men somedays.

Chip, Many of us have been saying this since last season’s blowout by UT. Glad you finally came around.
Now as for Bobo - do you really think our sputtering offense is the fault of our players? Granted we lost alot to injuries on the O L but our inability to score in the red zone is as inexcusable as the D giving up the number of points you listed above.
Bobo’s playcalling has been 50-50 at best and that doesn’t cut it in The SEC.
Richt had best make some major changes at the end of this season. If he doesn’t, the responsibility will be on his shoulders come next season.

And to Moreno….be a leader this year. You didn’t take yourself out last year. Tough through it if it hurts a little. Breathe through it if you’re winded a little. Step up and be a leader. Do you see what ESPN says about you? “more like No-Show Moreno”. It appears that a steadfast trait with Coach Richt is devotion & faith. Two great qualities in a father. Same traits in a business can lead to failure. Football is, sad to say, a business. It appears that Meyer has to ability to continually change & adapt as evidence with this years adoption of the veer in their offense. We, at Ga, do not appear to adopt schemes to our talent, but ask the talent to play in the scheme. Fla’s C. Strong has done a number on us every year & Martinez cannot stay w/ Meyer or any other good coordinator. I think that we have problems w/ Bobo & Martinez. Martinez appears to have fire as a person on the sidelines, but his defenses do not play with same. They have too many days where they are not “jacked up”. Willie may have some fire, but he does not transfer that to his players. Which leads one to the conslusion that he is not a leader or can’t get his players’ respect.

The Zone is killing us, when are going zone there needs to be more pressure on the quarterback. The coach needs to study the film and address the changes that have to be made to step up UGA game. All is not lost but adjustments must be made. Coach the players need to hit and not use up their energy on celebrations after every play. Lets play football.

UGA’s defensive problems began when CWM took over. Flat, uninspired play, defensive collaspes have become routine, not to mention the steadily rising number of points given up per game. This is his fourth season, he has nine returning starters and all we have to show for it is one of the worst defenses in the SEC. It is pretty obvious he is not getting the job done. CWM is paid a lot of money and given some pretty good talent to build UGA a formidable defense. He hasn’t done it in four years, so why continue with the same old routine and expect different results? That is insanity and if CMR doesn’t fire him, CMR needs to see a shrink.

Chip if CMR is determined to keep all his coaches then he really needs to make some adjustments in the way they coach, face it, the stats don’t lie. As you pointed out the defense is getting softer by the year. The is no fire on this team. The is poor execution on defense. We don’t cover well we don’t get after the QB we don’t tackle well. These are blue chip recruits when we get them. What happens? I appreciate CMR being loyal to his assistants but like the guy said earlier, his first loyalty should be to the whole UGA program. Being a leader means making tough decisions. This a tough decision that needs to be made. 10-2 or 11-2 is great. But when the two losses are lopsided as they are against teams we should be maaking a statement against it changes things. Whether it’s good or bad 10-2 and New Years day bowl is less than what everyone that call themselves a BullDog was expecting this year. We just don’t play with an attitude, we don’t have enough intensity to win the BIG game it seems. I’d say the defense is a good aplce as any to change this. We need some who will snatch a player up and get in face when needed. Do we have that now? If we do I don’t see it. Lastly, I am a huge supporter of Richt, There is no other coach I’d like to have at UGA. He just neds to examine the whole program and make some tough decisions.

The same guys that orchestrated the great turn around last year are on the staff. Bobo and Martinez have had to reshuffle week after week with injuries. We are not having the year we anticipated but it can still be a great year. The Dallas Cowboys are experiencing injuries and have fallen fast. Our staff needs a little credit for patching things up week to week with someone else going down. Some of our losses to injury have been huge. Think of our defensive line if Owens were playing. Him getting double teamed and Atkins running free???? Our young pup offensive line with everyone healthy???? We have lost to 2 great teams that doesn’t make the losing any easier we just had too much to overcome. Go DAWGS finish strong!

I bet the yards after contact under Martinez’s defenses number in the gazillions. It is so frustrating to watch these guys just desperately dive at a ball carriers legs instead of trying to wrap up and tackle them. There are no dominating hits. You never see our linebackers putting a hit on anyone like Spikes put on Knoshown. God, I would give anything to see that. But we NEVER see it. Our guys just hurl their bodies at the ball carrier and trip them up. Then they stumble forward for another 3 or 4 yards extra yards. Its like someone is scratching their fingernails down a chalkboard watching this crap. The most we can hope for with this kind of soft defense is an SEC championship like we won in 2005, which was a down year for the SEC. We will never take it to the next level with this sissified defense. Never. Do not hold your breathe people.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!
I’m not proposing anyone be fired. I’ll leave it up to CMR. However, does anyone think the offense and defense doesn’t need to be fixed? And if they need to be fixed, it falls upon the shoulders of the HC, OC, or DC. Simply put, something has to be done.
By murfdawg
November 4, 2008 10:49 AM | Link to this
I don’t like the way WM likes to play that soft cover two defense, but I can’t blame him for the points in Jax. The defense had a take away that was called back, and the head coach gave the gators the ball on a short field with the stupid on side kick. There is not a team in the country that could stop fla when you give them the ball at the 1, 10 and 25. Give the other team a little credit for being a good team. However, we made fla a great team with the turnovers and missed opportunities.
I am old school, run the damn ball when you are inside the ten(see Bama).Unfortunately, we don’t have the power in our offensive line we have had in the past. Bobo’s claim to fame is beating AU in 5 overtimes. When he gets iside the 25, he thinks he needs to trick the opponent and try to outguess them. I got news for you Bobo, you haven’t tricked anybody in two years except LSU.
Here’s a little tip for the OC.When you get inside the ten yard line, Put Southerland, Chapas and Munzmaier in the backfield with Moreno and pound the ball in the end zone.
One more tip, for the OC. Have you noticed that when Moreno takes himself out of the game and King comes in, the other defense comes with a blitz or great rush? Coincidence or not?
If WM cannot stop GT, then he needs to go. I can live with giving up points to everyone else. But living in Atl, I don’t want to hear anything from the insects for another 7 years. Go Dawgs!!!

dexterdawg (and others saying the same thing): I have to repeat my post from the Bradley article.
To those who call us whiners, complainers, and fair-weathered fans because we’re pointing out problems that we believe need to be fixed, I have serious issues with your definition of “supporting” the program. If it means that you only voice the positive even when it’s clear that there’s a pattern of the team being outplayed (and seemingly) outprepared in big games at least once or twice a year, then I think you’ve confused support with complacency. We’re not betraying the program; we want to see it succeed.
You were probably the same people who criticized those who wanted to see the Donnan era end. It was clear that he needed to go, but we’d get the same comments: “We go to a bowl game every year; you should stop complaining, etc.”
Bottom line: we support the team. The program IS clearly better than it was. But are there glaring flaws that need to be addressed? Clearly the answer is yes. If you deny that, you’re not a supporter of the program. You want it to remain at its current level.

Richt may need to change something just to show that accountability does exist in the program. Martinez’s “be careful” philosophy just does not work. If UGA seldom gave up big plays fine, but they do get torched. Six in the box with 5 DBs has become the base. Getting nickeled and dimed downfield and before you know it it is goal-to-go has become the norm. Martinez, Jancek and Fabris all need to be replaced. Nothing personal but the soft approach on defense is not good.

It all comes back to the absolute fact that anytime UGA has had a serious nat champ contender, it was due to defense. Remember the great team of 65. ? Bill Stanfill, Jake Scott -defense. Who was the QB ? Mike Cavan, a freshman. 1980- I’ll give that to the offense only because of Hershel, a once in a lifetime player. 2002-2006: Although D Greene was terrific it was defense that held those teams together. UGA will never be seriously considered until they feature their defense over their offense.

i disagree, even going 11-2 this year would make 2008 a colossal failure of a season. when you start the season as the #1 team in the country and then you don’t even win your division… you’ve failed!
willie has got go. the defense, especially the secondary, has been a big/bad issue for years now. his scheme is just too soft, it stops most big plays but allows teams to move the ball little by little. news flash - 10 yards is a 1st down, that’s all you need, everytime!
i’d give bobo the rest of the year to work out the kinks or put his house up for sale. this not scoring in the redzone problem and changing what works right when we get down there every drive is RIDICULOUS! supposedly we’ve got 2 top 10 NFL draft picks leading the offense, but they can’t score! are you kidding me?
i think this might be the first time that some UGA fans have actually thought that richt might not the guy. just face it, i love CMR but he’s not cut throat enough to win titles. we need to start beating the tar out of teams, not settling for 14 or 17 point victories. this is exactly why we can’t play a whole game against top teams, because we shut it down mid 3rd quarter against average ones.

The offense lost the UF game. The D did a good job when UF wasn’t knocking on the door bc of a turnover. Face it, Tebow can score from ten or twenty yards out against the best D. CWM is ligit. In every loss this year the score would have been a lot better if the O would have sustained drives and put points on the board. Come on zero against Bama in the first half. Three against UF for pretty much the whole game. That’s not keepig the D off the field.

Whoever or whatever is to blame, something is not right with the team. Infact, it is something that has been going on over the past 2-3 years. In my opinion I think that, overall, the problem seems to be one that started just before Dooley left: we have good, but not great, teams that play good, but not great, games; and that on certain games and certain years we had a good team that played great. But, we have not yet had a great team that played great in every game, including the big ones. To be fair, those type of teams do not come along every year nor for every club (just look at Nebraska). So, the question for Richt and everyone is: what will it take to make a great team and get them to play like the greatest?

My biggest problem with Martinez has been his failure to adjust the defense to account for the strengths/weaknesses of his players. The way I see it: we have gotten little to nothing out of our DEs and I do not expect this to change next year.
Chip, your points against stats coincide with the DE talent tailing off. Pollack was better than Moses and CJ who were better than Howard by himself. The DEs need to pressure the QB for this zone defense to work; otherwise, the QB and receivers have too much time. Even the most talented secondary (which we are not) cannot cover for 7 seconds.
One way to cover up subpar end play is to blitz LBs and corners occassionally. I rarely favor a safety blitz outside of a run play. We did some of this against LSU, but have not blitzed consistently all year.
While it is true that we dont have a playmaker on defense, Georgia has never really been a takeaway team. Finally, this defense also requires takeaways, mistakes on offense, and tackling (as mentioned above).
I think we can get any DC to come in and call a base cover 2 in all situations.

and what’s up with these stupid broken Offensive plays every game. What happened in the 1st qtr when we had 2nd and 2 in the redzone. We ran some sort of option that hasn’t worked all year. We did the same thing against Vandy at one pt. The name of that play must be snap the ball to Stafford and run straight out of bounds for no gain. Are we not good enough to run and pass? Where are the inside passes? Why can’t King run when Moreno needs a blow? Why do we go vertical so much and not mix up the passes with multiple routes with reads?

and I agree with the CMR comment by aaron. He needs to focus on making our team tougher and not on keeping everyone loose and dancing on the sidelines. Being blown out by UT, Bama, and UF over the last two years falls on CMR. He needs to get the Dawgs playing with more disciplin and focus. Blackouts and onside kicks aren’t the way to win games.

Richt needs let Martinez go. If he doesn’t then the “fans ire” may end up turning on him. The fans are hungry for a championship and , after getting a small taste year in and year out, their hungry may just grow out of control. Sure it is good to finish 11-2 year after year, but remember Lloyd Carr at Michigan?

I think Martinez needs to go. I think he is to far over his head, he may be a good position coach but he is not a good coordinator. I did a little research last night. In the four years that VanGorder was DC, the team only allowed 30 points or more just one time. The SEC Champ in 03. Since Martinez has taken over in just 3.5 years he has allowed the opponents to score 30+ on 9 occasions, including a 50+ performance at home to Tennessee. UGA always gets the 4 and 5 star recruits that have the talent but when the D does not perform it is the coaches fault. Now the defense is close to last in the league IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE!

Blame the coaches/blame the players. Could it be that the problem is that we are not as good as Alabama and Florida?
I don’t see a multitude of other teams that are figuring out the Tide and the Gators. The Ole Miss win over Fla was a fluke.
We always have something to work on to get better. Go Dawgs. Suck it up.

defense wins championships, therefore lack of defense will not win championships. i am tired of hearing about the youth on the offensive line. yes it is a problem. the defense has underperformed all year. 9 returning starters should (one would think) be improved over last year. they constantly look confused, lack emotion, and leadership. there is no pass rush. overall the team looked unprepared in both the alabama and florida games. how can that be? the schedule reviwed in preseason, one could see 2 losses due to tougheness, but not because they were unprepared or lacked emotion. you can see them fold as a team. overall i question the mental toughness of this team. if as the players contend, they are prepared properly, then it comes down to the mental toughness and desire of the team. would someone please tell us all who is the emotional leader of the defense and the offense?? the raw talent is there, but there is an element missing that allows them to maximize the results of all this talent.

One, the team seems to have the same passion as the coach. I think Richt needs to learn to communicate some passion. His comment after the game, “we had opportunities” is a dispassionate statement. Erk Russel had passion and none of his teams at GA or GA Southern ever played without it.
I hope that he is shooting Myer the bird. That would be a move in the right direction. You must have Killer Instinct to win this conference.

It’s Willie Martinez’s fault Bulldogs are 7-2 instead of 9-0 and not #1 in the nation. What is he thinking about? I’ve watched every play of every Dawgs SEC game this year and only a handful of times have Dawgs rushed the quarterback. Dawgs should have laid Tebow out 10 times and they did nothing. Season is over now because of a lack of passion and focus on Defense. Get Willie out of Richt’s way so we can win a ball game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Willie can’t even spell DEFENSE if you spotted him the consonants. Unless North Texas State or Lousyanna Monroe need a coach, nobody is going to come looking for Willie. Not sure if the stat for 3rd down conversion defense is kept but we seem to always give up the 3rd and 10. Zero pressure on the QB’s allows them to sit back and throw at will. Willie and Fabris seem to be in a constant state of discombobulation. The offense is not doing the D many favors but its because we put ourselves behind the 8 ball with going for the 5% possibility bomb or throwing vertical for a 2-3 yard gain.
Coach Richt won’t fire anyone. Let’s just hope all if this fire and brimstone gets their attention.

Congrats to the Gators on their big win.
I would have liked to have seen the game played without the 4-5 incorrect calls that were a 20-30 point swing in the first three quarters. Florida has a very good team, but they didn’t really have to do anything special in this game because of some very poor officiating.
Georgia stops FL on the first drive
Georgia drives down the field on Florida and misses a field goal.
on Florida’s 2nd drive, UGA stops them a full yard short on 3rd down. The refs spot the ball incorrectly and the play is even reviewed. It is obvious that Tebow is short by a yard, no need to even measure, but FL is given the first down to contiue the drive.
Currie was held badly on that same play RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BALLCARRIER and it wasn’t called.
Later on that same drive UGA intercepts the ball, but a pretty questionable penalty is called on the D-line. Florida ends up scoring 7 after being stopped two seperate times on that drive
In the 3rd quarter, the ref badly missed a holding or defensive interference call on AJ and that ball was intercepted and returned inside the UGA 5 leading to 7 more FL points. If the correct (and obvious) call is made, UGA receives 15 yards and has it first and 10 inside the FL 30. Instead, FL drives 3 yards for 7 points.
Also in the 3rd, Asher Allen has tight coverage on a FL receiver one on one and his jersey is clearly grabbed and pulled giving the FL receiver enough space to catch the ball that lead to 7 more points. If the correct and obvious call is made, rather than 7 points for FL, they are backed up.
Would Florida have won the game if those crucial calls weren’t blown? I don’t know, but it would have been a very competitive football game and probably come down to the wire.
I understand that sometimes the refs blow a call, but I have never witnessed a game where it the refs had such an impact on the game. If the game is played 10 times, maybe FL wins 6 or 7 of them, but no team can overcome a 20 to 30 points swing from blown calls.

Greetings DAWG NATION:
Let me first begin by saying that I am a firm beliver of a strong running game and good defense. I have made it a point to watch Georgia football just about every weekend for the past six or seven years and this year’s defense is the worst I have seen it. This can be for a number of reasons, but I live in a world where the leader takes the blame. Martinez style of play is a “bend but don’t break” which, in my opinion, doesn’t require 4 and 5 star recruits to operate.
When we go out and get these kids and the AJC tells us what great athletes there are, and fans expect for them to hit the field and “play”. As a Georgia fan, i don’t enjoy watching our defense get dragged down the field on a weekly basis due to poor play calling. If you remember a couple of years back when we were beating Auburn we got burnt on 4 down and forever in the fourth quarter and ended up loosing the game. Those are the types of situations BVG would have won versus the opposing offense.
And last weekend, I noticed a redshirt freshman, who has had 5 ints returned for TDs, lead his offensive unit to 497 yds. That is unexceptable. We have the type of athletes that most teams would die for, let them go and play an aggressive style of football that will yield the Bulldawg nation a championship. FIRE MARTINEZ!!!
And I’m gone!

The fact of the matter is with this Bulldawg teams is that none of the coaching staff has what it takes to win a national championship. CMR is a good coach and I am proud of what he has done since he has been in Athens. But the fact remains that “nice guys finish last”. We need a coach that will get in these kids faces and make them afraid to make a mistake. He does not have that killer instinct which wins championships. Les Miles was not a better coach that Richt but last season he proved that you got to be ballsy to win.

The pertinent question is this: Is the Bulldog Nation satisfied with 9 to 10 wins and a non-BCS bowl each year? If yes, then the current coaching lineup is perfectly sufficient to deliver.
However, before Richt coached a single game, he told the press he had his sights set higher than just the SEC crown. After 8 years, he has failed to deliver, despite the stream of extraordinary talent that has flowed through his program.
By contrast, Urban Meyer delivered the NC in just his 2nd year at FL, playing with another coach’s players and coming of a 9-3 season. Les Miles delivered the glass trophy in just his 3rd season, again with players from the previous regime. Nick Saban, in just his 2nd season, already has his Crimson Tide ranked #1 and poised for a run at the brass ring, though there is still a ways to go. This after a 6-6 initial season.
UGA has never been an elite national powerhouse, regardless of the rose-colored memories of hard-core “Homers”. Dooley was an average coach without that single player we all know and love, but who has been gone for over 25 years.
A single NC in the modern era and a 20-year drought of SEC titles is not glowing success by any definition of the word. Our young men (No, they are not “kids” or “boys”) under Richt have had the talent and the desire, they just have not had the “coaching up” to help them play beyond themselves when necessary.
If we expect excellence in our team, and a rise to national elite status year-in and year-out, then some difficult decisions need to be made soon, by Richt and possibly Damon Evans.
The powers that be need to decide if good enough actually is, or if excellence is the new order of the day.
I vote for Excellence, and soon.

I don’t even want to hear it, Chip. I’ve been making the case for this every year when we get out of the gait on talent alone and then get smoked because our defense is either in the wrong spot or can’t read and react to save its life - both of which reflect the coach.
Go back through Martinez’ defenses since he took over and take a good look at how we make Heisman candidates out of opposing players EVERY year.
Both Fla and Ala could have scored in the eighties had they not had mercy - and that makes this dawg sick to his stomach. This week has been NO different than any one of the weeks following a big loss under Donnan when we expected more from our team.

Martinez is not a good D coordinator, he is absolutely not worth being at Georgia, The Falcons are winning because of BVG, the Falcons D is legit and pretty awesome. here are few candidates that can replace Martinez TCU D coordinator, Auburn’s DC, Kentucky’s DC, South Carolina’s DC. and F*** Florida and their abnoxious fans, And I wish Richt did give the finger to the crier of the mullet land. I put the blame primarily on recruiting, not on Martinez. We have repeatedly passed on big, physical DT’s (Omar Hunter, Ted Laurent, etc) for smaller, quick guys and we are paying the price against big, physical OL’s.
We trotted out a DL on the goaline against UF that weighed about 260 across the board. That is simply not big enough.
I also wonder how much better off we would be if our back 4 consisted of Asher Allen, Reshad Jones, Eric Berry and Morgan Burnett. I dare say that that would be the best defensive backfield in college football.
As always with college football, it the Jimmy’s and Joe’s, not the X’s and O’s. Unfortunately, due to injury and poor recruiting we are simply deficient on both lines right now.

As a UGA alum, this game took me back to the years of Ray Goff and Jim Donnan. We looked like the Keystone Cops running around out there. I thought that with CMR that we were through being trampled by good opposition, but it appears that I was wrong. I have never been on the Martinez bandwagon and I think that the results from this year when facing quality opposition speaks for itself. I do believe that John Chavis from Tennessee might be available as a possible replacement. I also believe that we need an attitude adjustment. We do not have a killer instinct where we simply bury a team. Instead we beat an awful Tennessee team by 12 and an average Vanderbilt team by 10. Why do style points not matter? Until there is a college football playoff, they most certainly do matter. CMR, you can still be a Christian and run up the score. That’s what you are paid to do….win and win impressively enough to make the voters think that your team is more than average. When you struggle against inferior opponents, your team looks inferior. When you crush them, your team looks good. When you beat a quality opponent, your team looks great, regardless of the score (this is the only exception where the score doesn’t matter). When you crush a quality opponent, you look awesome and the voters will reward you. So, in closing, Martinez needs to go and the attitude needs to improve. CMR, you are the leader of this team. As your attitude is, so will your team’s attitude be. Let it be angry this week. Let it be superior to Kentucky. They are weak and we should crush them. Let the score indicate this and regain some of the prestige that your team has lost.

First of all UGA93, we don’t arrange the SEC schedule, the SEC does. We have no input into scheduling an open date before Fla. The SEC has us playing the week prior, as they have Fla also playing the week prior. Next year we go to Ark the week prior, Richt says it’s hard to travel to Baton Rouge then to Jax the following weekend, think about next year.
This year’s defense is confused, unable to make big plays, and far too often the DB’s are caught out of position. They also can’t cover, they can’t cover their mouths to cough. We’ve played 9 games, yet this defense is making the same mistakes as they did in game 1. It isn’t as if they are freshmen, this is an experienced group, yet they continue to have blown assignments, get caught out of position and give up big plays. Why is this defense making the same mistakes game after game? Coaching? Players? It goes without saying we cannot tackle, nor make big plays.
As for talent, two years ago we lost Cameron Heyward to Ohio St, Alan Bailey to Miami, Eric Berry to UT and Morgan Burnette to GT. How much better might this defense be had our staff done a better job of recruiting and been able to sign those 4 guys. The game is won with talent, if we don’t have it, that’s the fault of Coach Richt and his staff, Recruiting is part of the job. They must do a better job.
This team lacks toughness, nastiness, a killer instinct. The games they’ve won they’ve let opponents hang around, they have lacked the ability to close the deal. This team does not hammer the opponent on offense or defense, they don’t put them away. We seem to let the opponent back in the game. The Tenn game is an example. We should have won that game by 35 pts but we could not close it out. The defense let LSU hang around and missed assignments and lapses in the 4th quarter allowed LSU to score 2 TD’s they should never have scored. Same for Vandy.
Something is lacking and has been for 4 seasons now. This program let W Va run up and down the field and build a lead we could not overcome; they were humiliated by Tenn in Sanford Stadium giving up 50+pts; last year Tenn embarassed us again, and this year in one of, if not the, biggest games in school history as a favorite and preseason #1 on a prime time national TV broadcast gave up 31 first half points to Ala; then the debacle last weekend. These blowouts are unacceptable, they should not take place with a program that considers itself a Top 10 program. Why is this happening? Preparation? Execution? Focus? Lack of team leadership?
Questions need to be answered within the program. As far as coaching changes, I am almost certain that will take place. I recall an interview with Mack Brown in which he said that he shook up his staff after last season, brought in 2 new young coaches. That those new coaches brought new perspective, new enthusiasm, more emotion not only to his players, but to himself and the entire staff. I think it’s time we brought in some new blood. It appears fairly evident that we lack enthusiasm and passion, we don’t play with a zeal or fire, our players appear unemotional. Changes are coming, one way or another, changes are coming. Either Mark Richt makes changes or the success of the program will change, and not for the better. I have confidence that Coach Richt will place the best interest of the program, as well as that of the young men in the program and the University above allegiance to any one individual.

Joe, great mind. I too think recruiting is the beggest problem of all. Georgia likes trick player, the best example is Moreno. Moreno can put on a good show against an average team, but against a good team, he is merely a pusharound. Bama’s best runner last year is not even playing this year, ‘cause Saban thought he is not physical enough. In SEC college level, take Tebow over Stafford, a big physical runner would be a better choice than Moreno.

What a bunch of crybabies trying to find a place to put the blame. The national championship thing was overhyped from the beginning. With 5 new faces on the offensive line, you don’t win national championships. I don’t think the d-line is as good as it was last year, either. Why is it Willie, Bobo, or Fabris? They only coach, they don’t play. They do recruit, but that is not a perfect science either. Didn’t find the need to run anybody off after last years victory over Florida. That’s the nature of the beast. The idiots who write here think the solution everytime Georgia loses a game is to fire everybody. Get that pacifier out of your mouth, go to work, and shutup. If your buddies at work give you a hard time when the dogs lose and you can’t take it, get a handkerchief and find an out of the way place, and cry your heart out, but get over it. I am proud of the Dogs win or lose and continue to support them, knowing that only once or twice a year will I be sad. Then once in while, as in 1980, I will have a big smile at the end of the year. Get a life. Football is a great game, but it is only a game.

Chip,
One other defensive issues to note over the past few seasons - the D has routinely not been able to get a critical stop when needed in the 4th quarter. In 2005, they gave up the big 4th down play to AUB, gave up a 4th quarter drive to SC (SC missed the 2 pt conversion & we won), gave up a 4th quarter 90 yard drive against ARK which could have won the game (a penalty by ARK saved it); In 2006, Vandy drove right down the field in the 4th quarter for a winning kick, Ole Miss drove the length of the field for a 4th quarter TD to make it a 1 score game, MSU drove 80 yards to get within a FG, KY drove 69 yards for the winning TD, Tech drove over half the field to take the lead (Stafford went back down for the winning TD to MO). Last year the Vandy game would have been the same as 2006 if not for a lucky fumble (which was not caused by the defense, but because the runner was holding the ball incorrectly) and Bama drove to tie the game at the end of the 4th quarter (we managed to win in OT). This year, we got a goal line fumble against SC on a good defensive hit, but we did nothing to keep SC from getting that far in the first place.
Sorry for the long post. I have never posted before, but this bothers me.

Martinez must go! He can’t coach at this level—-giving up big points to Bama and Florida with all the athletes on that D—inexcusable. And if Richt doesn’t start winning big games soon, he can hit the road with martinez. Ga should be winning national titles, not going to minor bowls most years.

You’re just beyond words, absolutely the best revisionist I’ve ever heard. “W” has to hire you to revise his failed presidency.
Florida dominated the Dawgs on both sides of the ball, your coach called the worst single call in history; an OSK with the team down by 4 and 3 quarter left to play, blame that idiot, not the refs.

Chip, Richt will keep Martinez, so the only other thing to do is bring in some help in addition. Richt should hire David Pollack and between the two it should work. David would bring that ‘fire’ that they seem to be missing.

Reading these posts confirms what most people know - that UGA has THE most obnoxious fans in college football. The incessant and idiotic woofing is interrupted only long enough to mix in some whining about the designated scapegoat of the week. Had you myopic dolts watched the game, you would have noticed that the Offense was to blame - not the Defense. Martinez can scarcely be held accountable for regularly facing the Gator offense on a short field. Paybacks are hell; who’s dancing now?

As I was sitting in the stadium saturday watching the game, i was in utter disbelief. Shell shock i guess would be a better discription. Thoughts were running through my mind like, “how could this be happening again”, “why is this happening”. Being the college football junkie i am, I was comparing our past recruiting classes to floridas in my mind. And correct me if im wrong, but both schools recruit on the same level. And i couldnt justify why in the heck we were getting our a## handed to us in the manor we were.
Our athletes are on the same talent level, so it cannot be anything other than poor pre-game preporation and play calling. I really wish CMR would get in the A@@ of bobo and martinez. This is embarrassing. If they cannot get the job done, then we need to find someone that can.
I am sick and tired of walking out of Jacksonville municipal stadium stadium in the middle of the third and fourth quarter. Obviously i wasnt able to make the game last year due to a business trip. But, I am speaking of this year and years prior i have attended the game. I am just tired of spending all of the money I do to supporting my beloved bulldogs and leave jacksonville every year with a bad taste in my mouth.

Struggling Defense, I’m so happy to see someone on here who bases their opinions on more than just the current season. A lot of the late drives you mentioned were Martinez’s fault. (He decided to play it “safe” instead of aggressive against teams who had 2-5 minutes left on the clock. So those teams just slowly drove down the field picking up 8-12 yards at a time against UGA’s zone defense.) I consider Martinez to be a mediocre DC, but this season’s 2 losses are not his fault. The rush defense is great when we have both Ellerbe and Curran healthy, but our corners are simply not as good against the pass as Minter/Jennings or their predecessors. Some guys like Bruce Thornton or Paul Oliver needed time to develop consistency, but I just don’t see it happening with our current group.

defense wins championships. stafford gets the nod that he is a top 5 pick, he looks at the defense performance, and has to conclude to go pro this year. why stay? the pressure that you have to score 60 points a game to win is just to tough. so next year we get to start another 5th year senior (sound familiar?), cause he has put in his time, combined with another mediocre defense, leaves the dawg nation scratching and wondering what happened? soft zones and no pass rush will not get the job done. never will. do we aspire to be fighting for second or third in the sec east? where is the heart of this team and this program?? i have been a season ticket holder for 32 years plus time as a student at uga, and i have never seen more raw talent underperform so badly as this year, coverage, tackling, blocking, receiving, etc. it is just sad.

I’m fine with WM. He knows what he’s doing and his players respect him and play hard. To me, the D’s problems (and successes) start and end with the D-Line. When it (notably the Ends) dominates, Ga’s D kicks butt. In any event, with very, very few exceptions an opponent’s offense has to play lights out, earning every yard they get, to beat WM’s defense, even when vital players (such as Jeff Owens and Danelle Ellerbe, who were Georgia’s defensive all-stars going into the year)are missing. The Dawgs (and the crappy refs) handed Fla a lopsided win with turnovers and missed opportunities. So Fla ran up and down the field? I guess the cheating CB did on his ‘hook em interception to the 1 and the WR did on his snatch (of Asher’s jersey)and grab TD. Of course, crappy refs, injuries, turnovers and unforced missed plays can’t and shouldn’t be used as excuses. Only Tim the Teabag has that right - Thank God his feelings aren’t hurt anymore. Ga lost the game (seemingly according to script), but I firmly believe WM and the rest of the Ga staff has what it takes to win it all. Now is the time to stand by this team, by its players (griping about Knowshon, who plays harder than hard, taking himself out of a game is pitiful and ignorant) and coaches, because the seeds of the program’s continued success - which will include a National Championship very soon - are taking root over the rest of this season.

We will never win another SEC championship until we get an aggressive DC. Martinez apparently can not inspire, much less game plan. I look for us to lose 2 more games unless we score 40 points a game, which we won’t because every team we play has a better defense than we do and also because Bobo chokes in the red zone.

WE NEED THAT “KILLER” MENTALITY. If we are to EVER get another national championship, we need to truly believe in ourselves, and have a “Do or Die” attitude. A WICKED SWAGGER, like the great teams of Alabama anf Florida. Saban has restored that in T-Town, and folks in Alabama are set for a longtime. Spurrier blew teams out when he could. Why? Because he firmly believed that if you’re considered a great team, then you should beat an average team by a huge margin because you’re supposed to. If you don’t “MOW OVER THE COMPETITION,” then you’re not great. As a result, obviously, he was great. His teams were great. Bear’s teams were great. Saban’s teams are great. They all instilled the WICKED SAWGGER, THE KILLER MENTALITY, AND HAVE BLOWN TEAMS OUT WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Every great artist steals from another artist, and those are the pictures we need to desperately emulate with our current talent.

Jdawg34 admits to another indiscretion that helps rank the Dawg fans as the worst. He, and just about every other Georgia fan, left the stadium way before the end of the game. What a bunch of fair-weather patsies! You only stay through games when you can woof at the opposing team. If you really gave a rip, you would stay to the end. I was embarassed for you and I’m a Gator. You’ve got a fantastic coach, a very good team, and you’re still a bunch of losers.

THE most obnoxious fans without a doubt in the country are the Gator fans and I’ll hold you up as proof positive. Your jorts must be on a bit too tight as the theme of the blog was DC Martinez. Yes we have a problem on the defensive side which has been evident all year long. Not just the recent one game loss to the flaming mullet wearing rednecks south of the border. Perhaps you should check the stats to bring yourself up on the issue before shooting off your mouth?

Listen up you bunch of armchair QBs…most of you have probably not ever stepped on a football field a down in your life, let alone coach a down…so give it a rest. The Dogs Defense is probably as good as it could be at this point. Remember Graduation? Bad on the Defensive line and linebackers. Also a big Injury to Owens the first game of the season put the nail in the coffin. You also need to realize how many other injuries we have had this year. The #1 Ranking was only going to materialize if everything went just right. And unfortunately for us it did not. Anyone who really deep down believed we could go through the schedule that we play and not lose or only lose one, were doing what Tech fans are doing now thinking they are going to end the streak…LIVING IN A FANTASY WORLD

yes you are ahead in the overall series, yes you have won the last 7. just as we won 4 straightin the late 90’s. and have a national championship in much more recent times than you. its called the ebb and flo my little mullet head.
that is all in the past and what is in the here and now is the game that lies ahead in athens in a month. when this season started i was hoping we could come to athens and spoil the party…what was i thinking. you already spoiled the party by pooping in your overalls in your two biggest games.

Damon Evans will be the one that ultimately makes the decision. Richt will never fire his former teammate. If Martinez were any kind of friend, he’d resign as it is only a matter of time before Damon gets enough pressure from big time boosters to force Richt’s hand.

I’ve been concerned about the defensive scheme for several years. While it’s true the defense plays well in the first game of the season, after a bye week and in bowl games (except for the WVU farce), but in many instances week-to-week preparation is questionable. And WM usually makes good adjustments at half time.
But the game is more complex than that, and poor tackling is more evident now than in seasons past.
It’s up tp CMR to make the final decision, but to win games against top-ranked opponents UGA needs to make some changes … either in scheme or DC.
It’s as simple as that.

Agreed… Willie Martinez is a liabilty…Dog fans have known this for a while. He does not adjust…and plays a more reactionary instead of coming out in attack mode. They should definitely play better….but the oline got beat up and had Stafford shell shocked….

Give the guy a break. Last I checked, he wasn’t making any tackles or providing any coverage downfield. The players need to take some heat and maybe earn their starting positions anew this week. The defense has also been hit hard by injuries this year. Let’s wait for these next three games before we make any rash moves. Go dawgs!

My problem with Martinez is just his overall philosophy. We seldom blitz and our current Dlineman cannot get any kind of pass rush on the QB. That leaves the D backs open to getting beat and they play a loose philosophy anyway. Seems we should change up something but we don’t. That in a nutshell is my problem with the defense of Martinez. And we let poor Brian Sullivan just stay out there way too long. Against Vandy after he had been beaten all season and already once by Vandy we left him all alone out wide on Vandys best receiver and they promptly threw to him for another score. If my wife and I could see it coming and begging for help for Brian, why couldn’t Martinez

We will not win a Championship under this boob. The Defense was supposed to be the strongpoint this season, and look what we do - allow 450+ yards to every decent team we play. That’s unacceptable for a school that has NC aspirations.
Man up Richt - he’s not getting the job done. He’s been here a while, he’s had his chance, and he’s blown it. Get someone else in there - it’s embarassing to watch this SORRY defense get stomped every week. No WAY LSU should be hanging 500 yards on you with that sorry offense.
We lead the SEC in scoring - if we could stop somebody, we would be in contention right now. MAN UP RICHT - he sucks!

chip,
one of the things i’ve been taught in my professional is that “good” is the enemy of “great.” under martinez, we’ve been good, but that’s the one thing that can keep us from being great. another thing we’re taught in leadership is to ask ourselves a very tough question: if [fill-in with the best in your profession] took over for me today, what’s the first thing he/she would change? i’m curious that if that was to be done with uga’s football team, do you think it would be changing the d coordinator?
also, i’m curious, what’s up with the link to the picture of cmr? did you have to go there?
thanks for the posts!

ARdawg - before you go getting interested in what I have in my shorts, perhaps you should consider all the statistics. Try these. GA is (in Div I) 46th in Rushing and 19th in Passing. They rank 66th in Turnover Margin, 35th in Scoring, a horrendous 54th in Red Zone offense, and have thrown 4 times as many interceptions as UF. The defense has not been stellar - but when the offense is putting up numbers like that, who can expect to hold the other team back? I am fully aware that the subject of the blog is Martinez - I accessed it by reading an article about GA Fans’ Ire.

Okay….. I rarely post on here but i read about the first half of the posts and couldn’t stand it.
You people who call yourselves DAWG fans who repeatedly jump on the fairweather bandwagon and throw the most available coach under the bus MAKE ME SICK. We played a crap game. We might have…. OH, GOD FORBID… only 11 wins this season. Well, since that isn’t good enough for you I say lets all jump on the Jim Donnan bandwagon and hire him back again, because apparently ANYONE can make a more informed decision than Richt, who has consistently produced more results with his staff than any coach since the Dooley era.
Oh yeah, and Willie Martinez, consistent DC coaching in the most balanced league in the US… HE MUST KNOW SQUAT and should immediately resign his position. The fact that he’s produced a top 20 defense in each f his years is simply not good enough. As a matter of fact, let’s write in a contract with him that if he’s not #1 in every category he must resign. Oh, yeah, every year.
Call me crazy, I just don’t get you guys. I get upset too, but you know what? So do the coaches. So do the players. This is THEIR TEAM more than it is ours, and we’re lucky to have such a wonderful organization to follow in college sports so passionately.
Do things need to change to win a NC? Yes, of course, however I’m beginning to think that the Tubby method of hiring and firing your coordinators every year does nothing for a program but keep it mired in mediocrity. What we need is the group of coaches we have to identify problems and attack them. We’ve done that BETTER since Mark R. has been coach than I can rememebr in my lifetime.
So go on and call for coaches heads, but when we finally win a NC the right way, by playing out game and keeping our problems solvable and within the bounds of catastrophe, I’ll be the one saying i told you so. I’ll also be the only one left with any real dignity.
In the meantime, get a life.

If I tell you what you need maybe you will not do it since it is me telling you. Bring your boy, home from Texas or even take the DC from La. Tech. Both are Dooley, junkyard dawgs that Russell taught, and they are tough like yall use to be. You can have all the talent in the world but if you play like a bunch of milktoast what good does it do ya. You might beat Tech in Athens but you ain’t going to enjoy it, we have less talent but are more man that that defense I saw Saturday.

Titled Bring Back that JunkYard Dog Attitude:
Legendary college football coach, Erk Russell coined the phrase “JunkYard Dogs.” He used this moniker to inspire and motivate a Georgia defense that was undersized and previously ineffective on the field. During his 17 years as the Dawgs’ D.C., UGA opponents scored 17 points or less in 135 out of 192 games. During that same time span, Russell’s JunkYard Dog defenses yielded more than 28 points just 18 times.
“By our own definition, a JunkYard Dog is a dog completely dedicated to his task, that of defending his goal line… In short, a JunkYard Dog is one who must stretch and strain all of his potential to survive. Then, he can think about being good,” Russell wrote.
I’m not advocating the idea of DC Willie Martinez headbutting players and bleeding on the sidelines. But, he has got to find a way to recapture that JunkYard Dog swagger, intensity, and attitude. Unless he can motivate his defense to play with such passion, pride, and nastiness, the Dawgs can forget about becoming one of the nation’s elite programs. It’s time to hunker down, and play like JunkYard Dogs!

Hey, Master Po, if you are going to even breathe, much less, write the name of the greatest coach of all time, spell his name correctly. It is not “Irk”, as in getting on someone’s nerves. It is “Erk”, as in GATA. You never, ever, saw Florida handle Georgia like they did Saturday when Erskine Russell was coaching the Dogs defense. So pay his the respect due. The reason the current Georgia football team is so erratic is because of the Erk curse. Georgia, including, Vince Dooley, mistreated Erk, and they will forever pay for it, until Vince Dooley admits it, and apologizes, or until the prima donna Mark Richt finally realizes that SEC football is not the same as FSU played, and gets a defensive coach that knows how to play smash mouth football. When Paul Johnson brings the Jackets to Athens, you will see a team coached to play football as it should be played.

Four bad decisions by Richt in my opinion:
The running play vs Auburn with only seconds left in the game. A 5th grader knows better. Absolutely dumfounding.
The onside kick-forever to be known as “THE KICK”
Martinez.
Bozo. The one who threw up the jump ball and got lucky. Now he calls a game like a boxer without a left jab. Just keeps flailing away and sometimes it works-and sometimes it doesn’t. Note all the 3 and outs.

Most of you who blog on here have a short memory- The Dawgs have been competitive every yr since Richt- I would say his decision making has been sound and if he feels Willie is the man, I am fine with that. The expectations are ridiculous for this team every yr, and the fact that they field a team that can beat anyone on any given Sat. should be enough, but unfortunately it is not for you professional arm chair quarterbacks

I saw a comment in a previous post about ESPN’s comment about Moreno be a No-Show. I thought if Knowshon doesn’t have it yet here is what the posted.
“The Bulldogs have been a bust in their two biggest games of the season, and Knowshon Moreno, once enveloped in Heisman hype, has looked more like No-show Moreno against Alabama and Florida.”
WOW!! I hope you DO post that in Knowshon’s locker. That p** me off…I can’t imagine what it would do for the dawgs and Knowshon.

Yo Chip, if the UGA Bulldogs were a NFL franchise would Martinez still be the DC. Nope, he would’ve been fire 2 years ago. Richt would be on the hot seat & Bobo would’ve never been close to a OC position. Hey REVGIG play & character is a reflection of coaching & leadership truth be told. Nick Saban is taking Bama in 2 yrs that Richt still hasn’t taken UGA. How long has Meyer been at UF & he has a title under his belt. The talent is there. They recruit in the TOP 10 every year.
What’s the problem??? UGA is not cutting it because they don’t win big games. I am wondering everyday is Richt the coach to lead UGA back to the promise land.
THEY ARE CHOKING BECAUSE OF THE COACHING!
Martinez is a BUM. Bobo is a BUM. UGA IS & FOREVER WILL BE JUST A 10-2 TEAM COMPETING FOR SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS.

He is too soft and has no killer instinct. He’ll never win a national championship being too cool and have a jell-o defense. Football is X&O and I didn’t see any agressiveness at all again FLA. We need to get rid of him and his staffs and hire Butch Davis or Bill Parcell.

I don’t think you can criticize the coaches for what the players fail to do. Defensive football has to be played passionately, and passion can’t be coached! For all of you calling for VanGorder to come back, why do you think he left? He doesn’t want to be an assistant coach in CFL; it is clear that Martinez’s defense is predicated on the front four putting pressure on the quaterback and that has not happened. Why would you blame Martinez? Do you think he’s not playing someone better? As for the soft zone, it is not very different than VanGorder’s was. The difference is the ferocity, or lack thereof, of our front four. Being a diehard Dawg fan, I don’t blame coaches for players that don’t perform. I hope the coaches and players learn from their mistakes and are better for it. GO DAWGS

What everyone seems to be missing is that you can have the best game plan and all the talent in the world (i.e. USC vs. Oreg State, FL vs Ole Miss, etc.) however, if the players don’t execute, it ain’t gonna happen. Let’s face it, our stop the run defense is exceptional, our pass rush and secondary coverage is bewildering….time for the Defensive backs to really “man up”.

I can’t believe the crap I’m reading here. The defense gave up 14 pts in the first half…and minus the bad calls and a moronic onside kick…it should have been less.
THEN…the defense holds UF on their first drive of the 3rd quarter, but yet again, the offense fu
Let’s discuss how we can’t complete a TD pass to a wide-open TE in the endzone. How about missing chip shot field goals in the biggest game of the season. And I will never in a million years understand that onside kick. I don’t care what CMR says…you don’t risk giving the ball to an offense like UF’s on your 40 fu
And one more thing…it is UF!!! Let’s face it…they have a dynamite offense. What do you expect to happen when we give them the ball on the 1, 25, and 40 yd lines!?!?

Be Careful what you ask for…YOU MAY GET IT. Just as Tommy Tuberville.
Georgia lacks leadership. Not the coaches, the TEAM. I don’t see one single personality on the team that even comes close to TEBOW. Is there any doubt as to who is the leader of the GATORS? Like him or not, you have to give him credit for leading the team both on and off the field. Look at Rutgers and Ray Rice over the last few years….Rice graduates and Rutgers goes in the toliet.
Coaches can only do so much…the TEAM must play the game there must be a REAL LEADER. Until the Dawgs find one, expect more 11-2, 10-3 seasons.

Need some more chapters in the offense playbook rather than just two pages. On Defense Willie has to go. Bobo has got one year or else we need to ship him out. Inability on both sides of the ball to adapt to what is available on any given play is unacceptable at this level. As far as willie martinez as defensive coordinator, he has failed with his job. This defensive team was said to be the strongest ever coming back for Georgia. They give yards up by the chunks and when they need a big stop, they dont get it. A lot of the defensive numbers are misleading, against top teams Alabama and Florida, Ga couldnt stop either team. If this guy is not fired, CMR will be fired in a few years.

I don’t think anyone’s talked about the real problem here. The problem isn’t the coaching, it’s the RECRUITING! Talent overcomes schemes.
All we ever hear is how “young” the O-Line is? How does this happen almost every year?? In an ideal situation, the RS-Soph’s and Freshman would be 2nd and 3rd string to Jr.’s and Sr.s, who like them before were backups. Then when the JR’s and Sr’s leave, those same 2nd/3rd stringers move up to 1st team, and start for two years. WHY DOESN’T THIS EVER HAPPEN at UGA?? I know we’ve got injuries and transfers like every other team, but his is ridiculous. An SEC team starting how many underclassmen on the O-Line and we’re talking about pre-season#1? Foolishness!

Desert Dawg Nailed it - this team lacks leadership. Also, they lack a focus in the red zone-just ask Moreno(he said it). Finally, they lack a killer instinct.
As Dawg fans, it sucks to be out of what we thought we would be competing for. I don’t know how you can coach intensity, but CMR needs to instill some in the offseason.
Oh by the way, Muschamp??? What are you, nuts? He’s in line for a head coaching job-Dare I say Tenn?? Just hope that if he does get that job, he doesn’t take Searles & Smart with him-

The o-Line has been a continuing issue. Just keep in mind that over the last 3 years, UGA has lost a number of OL recruits to many various issues; injuries, behavioral, etc. Searls has done an outstanding job, & is most likely in line for an OC job. I think he follows Muschamp, should he get a head coaching job somewhere-

Talking about WM, I think most UGA fans are tired of having a defense that does not attack. I know that I get frustrated with teams completeing pass after pass underneath! My God, it looked like JPW was playing playstation! Where is the difference-maker on the D-Line? Oh yeah, Owens went down. Why can’t we protect-oh yeah, Sturdivant went down.
Hey, does anyone care if Moreno & Stafford stays or goes???
By Leedawg
November 4, 2008 8:30 PM | Link to this
There’s not a snowball’s chance that WM gets fired - he and Richt are best friends. Since the man is not going to change, the attitude has to. EVERY opponent knows that we’re gonna come out with soft corner coverage and safeties in deep cover two. Has been that way since….VanGorder left. We beat Florida last year because the heat was turned waaaaaaaaay up. I think we may have blitzed on two or three plays this year. Everybody knows the book on JPW at Alabama - get in his face and he wilts under the pressure. We did not take advantage of that knowledge and he picked us - particularly B Evans - apart. Frshman or not, line up your best 11 on defense and turn’em loose. Enough of this bend/not break crap. They’re not having great seasons, but Auburn and UT always play great D. We’re not in the national mix next year unless the D comes around big time.

Wreckmaniac,
So it doesn’t matter who we recruit? How do you explain the past 7 years? Name a team that runs a triple option that has beat Georgia in the past 15 years. Your gimmick of an offense is cute for the ACC but will not beat a top 25 team from the SEC. We’ll play 2 deep to prevent your 5 pass attempts in a game and will have 9 in the box to attack your backfield. It’s gonna be a long day for the nerds.

Reasons Martinez needs to go: 1. WVU Sugar Bowl: 28 pts by half time 2. UT 2006—UT hangs 51 on us 3. Vandy 2006—LOSS 4. UK 2006 LOSS 5. Va Tech Chickfila Bowl: Down big at half time 3. UT 2007—Game over by half time 4. AL 2008—Game over by half time 5. LSU 2008—38 pts 6. UF 2008—49 pts
By the way…our defense is poor at best. Our run D is doing ok. Our pass D is AWEFUL! Guess who the d-backs coach is???? Yep, WILLIE MARTINEZ!!!

Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Mon, 11/03/2008 - 9:48pm. Corvey Irvin knows what you are thinking.
That Georgia didn’t live up to what you expected this season.
Certainly not that 31-0 hole Georgia fell into against Alabama in a 41-30 loss and the 49-10 beatdown by Florida.
“I figure nobody respects Georgia right now,” the Bulldogs defensive tackle said Monday. “They’ll probably say we were a fluke, that we were just the No. 1 team in the preseason, but hey, we can go make a statement against Kentucky. Let’s see if we can get our swagger back.”
Irvin said Georgia can’t let the loss divide the team and have players begin to point fingers.
Players and coaches have pointed to the four turnover second half as when the game got away from Georgia, but Irvin sensed the locker room was a dead zone at halftime.
“We were down 14-3 and we were in the locker room like we were down 28-0,” Irvin said. “I was in the locker room trying to get the guys going and we just didn’t come out with that fire like we played real Georgia ball. I don’t know if we were shocked or what.”

CHIP or anybody willing to answer,
It was mentioned above that Stafford will likely go pro. If the opportunity presents itself (big lead) during the remaining games, would it be wise for UGA to get Logan Gray some actual experience playing QB? How bout some option plays from the I-Formation? Maybe he’s not ready for the challenge or there is no Logan Gray package in the playbook. Prior to the season, I thought we might see a few wrinkles in the red zone, similar to the 1-2 punch of D Greene and D.J. Shockley. I was wrong. Very, very wrong.

UGAY is the most overated football team in the History of College Football. How can you idiots really believe that you have even a remote shot at 11-2. You already have 2 losses and will definately suffer a 3rd to TECH. I believe Auburn is good enough to beat you, because you have not beat anyone worth 2 cents. Since your coaches are now on the hot seat, give Chan The Man a call, you wanted him before and now you can get him.

there has been a feeling I’ve had all year long watching our defence and it is hard to describe except that when they are on the field it seems like we are missing a man, that we don’t have enough defenders on the field and everytime I count we have eleven. It’s like where is everybody at? When I watched Texas Tech against Texas the feeling I got was they are using 12 men, they were everywhere it seemed crowding the line of scrimmage, jamming the receivers. My conclusion is that when you have an excellent dominating defence,, it seems like you have the situation under control, but when your defence is weak, you just feel like you are always one man short.

Simple question: would Saban, Carrol, Meyer, or Spurrier keep Martinez? We all know the answer to that question. The facts speak for themselves. DEFENSE: As I mentioned for the past 3 years, our defense is way below par considering our talents we got. Defensive schemes always ONE STEP BEHIND most top class teams. Keep statistics for the past 3 years, GA is steadily declined. Are we getting worst defensively? No, the other top programs just inprove their. Martinez must go now (he can’t keep up with the rest of the top teams), again, Stafford Marino and co. will not be around forever and we are wasting time and players every year. I know I am bad, but sir (CMR), you let your friendship and mild manners ruin the UGA. Lots of former UGA boys coaching defense in many top programs. Look at South Carolina defense, they can keep compete with any top teams with no or little ofense. CMR just saying that we still have lots to play for! Sound like he is OK with what we are, NO. Especially considering what talents we have and preseason ranking, this is not enough! CMR might take the complain of one bad call to save Martinez, no, It is a domono effect when the other team score easily because of our D, they can take more chances in offensive play callings. It is sickening to see CUM smirked when they scoreed at will. OFFENSE: We stop ourself by emphasis to much of Red Zone offense. Don’t require to be a smart for person to see that we change the nature of play callings “suddenly” when we approach the so called Red Zone. NO the zone is not defined, it is in your head in stead. Just have to keep pounding and passings just like in any other zones! DON’t DEFEAT OURSELVES because “I have to” call it drastically differences in the 20 yards out. It is so predictable in the opponent’s eyes to see that we are scared or give them too much respect. Please take a look at the top teams, their Red Zone offense is not really difference from the other zones. ONE LAST thing; UGA used to be modest but strong desired to win from inside out (Dooley’s will keep his players humble but play like they lives were on the line). The hotdogging attitude is for.. like UF or UM not UGA. Now it is “reversed”. We are the Dog’s fan for life and you coaches are come and go, please understand that we are not all retired, we have to go back to work every Monday. And come in here to talk to our friends, indtead we have to deal with the ignorant kid like THE GATORCHOMP. CMR we still love you, get rid of CM now before the new commers realize what we doing with those talented recruits.

Willie Vanille and his O counterpart Bozo the Clown should step down or be forced out if the program is going to the next level…CMR needs to grab the boot straps, pull up real hard and make some tough decisions….forget the personal pain of firing your best friends because after the initial game, the pain will turn to pleasure!! The alternative is to leave things alone and strive for mediocrity…unfortunately this seems to be a common theme in our country these days…I wonder if the NCAA will ultimately step in and force the overacheiving teams to swap players with the underacheiving team inorder to “redistribute the wealth” so to speak?
