UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Questions: Roping Gators and blackouts

You asked for it; you got it. Following are the FAQs (frequently asked questions) you guys submitted for this week’s game. These are the ones that, by my best estimation, were posed most often. I’ll answer or get the answers to any other ones you have as we go through the day.

Let’s get right to it:

(1) Defense, defense, defense.

I hear more complaints about the defense — and defensive coordinator Willie Martinez in particular — than anything else on this blog. Lately, I can understand it. I, too, am surprised that Georgia hasn’t played better as a defense this season, especially considering it was returning nine starters from last year’s unit that finished 14th in the national in overall D. Granted, injuries have been a problem again, especially losing DT Jeff Owens right out of the gate. But they still seem to have all the parts needed to be dominant, and they’ve been anything but that. Entering the Florida game, the Dogs are sixth in the SEC overall (298.1 ypg), eighth against the score (20.2 ppg) and 11th — and 77th nationally — against the pass (221.2 ypg). The only thing they’re good at is stuffing the run. All that is before they meet Florida, which is one of the most explosive offenses in the country.

Asked about defending the Gators, Martinez said: “You have to play good with your eyes and execute the defense and get off blocks and make plays. It’s not going to change [for Florida]. You’re just trying to defend plays and the players, too. Making plays and recognizing where there strengths are and match them up with our strengths and weakness. You’ve got to execute on defense.”

Whatever all that means…

(2) Lots of questions about whether or not the Bulldogs are planning to “blackout” the Florida game.

There certainly has been no indication of that. Of course, if they were to do it this time they’d try to keep it a secret until kickoff. Personally, I think it would be a bad idea. Never mind that they got waxed by Alabama the last time they wore them. I just don’t think it would be nearly as effective in Jacksonville where the stadium is 50-50 Georgia and Florida fans. And I don’t think it’s sending the right message either. To me it’s almost like they’re trying to derive power and strength from wearing a certain color. I’m more of the mindset of wearing traditional colors and trying to win the game on your own athletic and strategic merits.

(3) A lot of queries about the tight ends, such as “why aren’t we throwing to them as much as we have in the past?” and “are they going to play Aron White more after his big catch against LSU?”

This question just won’t go away no matter how many times it gets answered. There are three basic reasons you’re not seeing more tight ends in the passing game this season. First, Georgia is having to utilize the tight ends much more in pass protection due to the young offensive line. Secondly, injuries have ravaged the position this season, with all three players currently battling serious shoulder problems (probably from all that pass protection on D-ends). And, finally, because the Dogs have three major threats — flanker A.J. Green, slot receiver Mohamed Massaquoi and whomever is playing split end — at wide receiver, plus the backs to throw to out of the backfield, they’re just not as reliant on the tight end as a receiver this season. That said, they still have plenty of plays in the playbook and, because they haven’t gone to tight ends as often, it’s more of a surprise when they do (see White’s 48-yard catch vs. LSU).

(4) Do the Dogs kick away from Florida returner Brandon James?

CMR: “There are two ways [to handle a great returner]: Either kick it away or kick it high. And you hope it’s high enough to cover. If you keep it in play or kick it out of bounds, you hope you didn’t shank it and you hope you got it off. Because when you do have to ask a punter to angle kick, he’s basically stepping \into a place that’s not quite as safe. You hope the pocket is wide enough to be safe. It also usually takes a little bit more time to turn and angle kick which is also a protection issue. You also have a chance for shanking them but we practice it and it will be ready to go. The other problem is when you put it in play you give a great player a chance to return it for a touchdown. There’s really not an easy answer. They’re going to stress us either way.”

For the record, a talked to punter Brian Mimbs after practice Tuesday — it’ll be an item in today’s notebook — and it sounds like the Dogs are going to punt straight at James and high. It worked well last weekend against LSU’s Trindon Holliday.

(5) Any plans to move some “speed guys” to defensive end to improve pass rush?

Same answer as all season: No. The coaches like who they have there and think they’re improving weekly.

So that’s all for now. Like I said, keep ‘em coming. Meanwhile, here’s a few links:

Alleged BCS guru Jeff Sagarin currently has the SEC ranked fourth among the super conferences in his weekly power rankings… .

If you’re rooting for an eventual playoff in college football, then you should root for this BCS disaster scenario… .

Alabama is a great team and it has the league’s best shot at making it to the BCS title game unscathed. But the Tide has benefitted from an extremely weak SEC Western Division… .

Here’s a good column on Georgia’s O-line by the Athens Banner-Herald’s David Ching.

I could practically strangle whoever asked about the blackout. Let it die already, I think it motivated the Tide more than us. Leave the black shirts in the closet for a long time, there’s no need. Any use of them now would make us look pathetic, like there isn’t enough to get excited about as it is (likely SEC Eastern Division Title, BCS Championship hopes alive, the chance to shut up someone moronic enough to refer to himself in the 3RD PERSON in his own book!) eyeroll to the ceiling

The other questions, I like.

Missed the submit your question blog, but one I would like to ask the players is as follows..

Does it provide any added motivation, when you turn on the radio or Espn and hear the total dismissal of your chances on Saturday against Florida?

It seems as if listening to my local radio sports shows (Charleston SC) and Colin Cowherd, Mike and Mike that there is no need to play this game. Florida will face Alabama. For a team to be preseason #1 (regardless of whether you believed it or not) going in to the 9 game of the season to apparently be so irrelevant is a story.

In my estimation this is the largest game of the rivalry as without saying a word publicy you get the feeling that each of these programs cannot stand each other. The silence is deafening.

GO DAWGS!!!

What it means Mark is that Martinez has no idea how to do anything different to stop Florida and will basically send out his normal defense featuring the four man rush and let Tebow pick us apart like a Thanksgiving turkey.

You have to give the man credit, when it comes to coach speak, he’s got that down pat.

But in all fairness…asked about defending Florida….what the hell is he supposed to say? I think “whatever all that means” is this: do you really want me to tell you what our plans are?

I think he was being polite and trying to give you something to put down besides…”uh, we plan on using defense”.

Why do you expect Willie to answer your questions about the defense, he has no idea what is going on, the defense has no passion, we do not fly to the ball as we have in the past, Florida will hang 60 on us, all from the offensive side,we do not have a coach or a player who plays all out on defense, especially in the secondary, these guys fold and try to dodge being hit. it is going to be a long day, unless someone steps up.

Fast defensive players like we have should be able to take advantage of that. They did last year. Go Dawgs!

Defensively I don’t see why we should alter our game plan from last year. Worked out OK then and the only big difference this year is that Fla has improved it’s run game and stopping the run is supposed to be one of our defensive strengths.

It amazes me how people will still complain regardless. These are the same people that wore Tennessee and FSU shirts during the Golff and Donnon years. If you take away the first half against Bama this year we would be #1. I don’t personally agree with all of CWM’s defensive schemes but 95% of the time he keeps UGA in a position to win. Georgia needs to come out cool, calm, and ready to play on Saturday. Florida is about to be introduced to a real QB this week and that is going to be the difference in this game. And as Gregg Allman said Im going Southbound to Jacksonville in the morning. Go Dawgs and to Hell with jorts, gold-rope chains, mullets, and socks with sandals.

Chip, Thanks for getting some answers for us. As long as we’re winning, I’m not all that concerned with defense. I like the move of Evans to Free Safety…especially in pass situations because he’ll have enough speed to provide good help. I also like Curran’s humility, pointing out that he needs to get better at getting off blocks quicker and taking better angles…coming from the leader in tackles, I found that pretty impressive. Martinez is learning…the corners, with the exception of one play with Cuff, are playing closer to the line and he is mixing up our packages better (see Gamble’s second pick from last week). As long as Martinez and Bobo continue to get better and evolve…I’m ok…as long as we’re winning!

82, I cringed too when I read the Martinez response. Not going to make any adjustments? If that’s the case, I think I’ll be spending this Saturday at the park with my kid rather than subject myself to watching Florida score on every drive. The D should be stingy, not the DC.

Ga can will the game only if, they do not spot Fl 10-20-30 pts in the first half and then have to play catch up… need to be agressive from the beginning. i can give you the alabama game 2008 lost the first half in pts, won the second in pts, lost the game, Tn last year, spotted them 28 pts, won the second in pts, lost the game, the previous two years at Fl respectively, spotted them 14 first half pts and won the second in pts and lost the game, the following year, spotted them 21 pts in first half, won the second in pts and lost the game. two years ago Tn in athens, we scored 28 first half pts and lost the second in pts, and lost the game. in any of these games, if ga plays a full game and wins two of them, ga would have played for a national title. it is always just 1 game each year, we lay down in a half…..

Lowcountry Bulldog, they also act like Florida is undefeated and has won every game by 30 points this season. All the “experts” have Georgia’s perceived weaknesses memorized to a T. They love to go back to that Bama game too. Bama did this and Bama did that. Yet they never say a damn word about the mighty Gators choking on a fatty against Ole Miss. How did this unstoppable juggenaut lose to Ole Miss? I guess you’ll just have to watch a video of that game to find out because the media sure as hell isn’t telling us. Their darling Gators are above reproach.

God I can’t wait to smack these hyped up sissies silly again.

fan “we do not have a coach or a player who plays all out on defense, especially in the secondary, these guys fold and try to dodge being hit.” Are you crazy or stupid? Rennie Curran plays all out every play no matter the score or opponent. Darryl Gamble had 13 tackles and two ints returned for touchdowns. Rashed Jones lays people out. Asher Allen is one of the best cover corners in the country. I understand your mad, but be realistic. LSU has a huge offensive line and has ran all over everyone. Their lowest total came against Florida, because they got down early and had to pass the ball. Our defense does need to step up, but most of the problems come from a lack of pressure on the quarterback not lack of heart or effort.

If you wanted to hear some coach speak from Martinez, he could have told you the truth - the way you slow down Florida’s O, you don’t stop them,is you make sure the first guy there makes the tackle. You can’t tackle the way we did in the 4th against LSU. The guys will be ready . They know what’s at stake in this game, and they know they handled the gators last year.

The defense does have a missing piece: a defensive end who can mount a pass rush. Martinez has to go with what he has and it makes it tough to defend the pass when the QB has all day to throw it.

Chip - please do not give any tips to Florida about punting strategy, defensive strategy, or what GA is going to do this week. There is a reason Urban has a gag order on Florida and we should not be talking about our strategy either. Why do you have to declare a “Blackout” to wear black jerseys?? If the team and the coaches like them, then wear them every once in a while. Plenty of other teams wear different combination of uniforms. This whole “Blackout” thing is getting old already.

By RandumDawg

Dear Willie, It will be OK with me for you to stay with the gameplan when you actually put some pressure on an opposing QB. With a healthy Tebow and the speed they have on offense I bet we don’t touch Tebow the whole game unless he runs the ball and we have to tackle him. I hope I am wrong but unfortunately for us dawg fans I haven’t seen it yet.

By Concerned

October 29, 2008 1:53 PM | Link to this

As long as we don’t face a big, strong back, our defense will be fine.

Don’t underestimate the talk of a blackout. Damon had requested that the team have a complete blackout - jerseys, pants, and helmet. Hopefully, intelligent heads prevailed and this poorly contrived scheme will be stopped. Otherwise, we will be the laughing-stock of the country for needing a gimmick to get ready for the biggest game of the year.

Call me crazy, but I think this will be a lower scoring game than people think. I think we’re talking about a 20-14, 21-10 kinf of game. I still think Florida will win and I’m sticking to that prediction. I find that if I don’t expect UGA to win, that’s when they surprise me and when we as fans start talking about how great they are, that’s when they suck. I call it the “Larry Munson/ Vince Dooley worry”: hope for the best and expect the worst! LOL.

I wished the Dawgs would get back to hard nosed football in the trenches. Speed is great in the right positions, but I am tired of 280lb DT’s and 240lb DE’s. The back 7 can have the speed we need to add meat in the front 4 and then we will get back to our ways as a defense

The Black Jerseys do look good, however we certainly don’t need to wear them for a while, also the next time they do,without all the fanfare. Don’t announce it a week ahead of time,to give the opponent extra motivation, so what if everyone in the stadium doesn’t all have the same color on, this is football not a fall carnival.

Getting a bad feeling about this game. We give up alnost 500 yards to an over rated LSU offense. UF puts 63 on the cats that only lost to Bama by 3. Feels like a game we will have to score in the 50’s to even have a chance. Kind of like UGA/Bama all over again.

jfergNCdawg, I agree the move with Evans seems like a good one. From what I read, he is taking to it. He even said his speed wasnt really working to any advantage with his back turned to the ball, and maybe he is better suited at safety. I assume its taken a few games to get his very young replacements ready at corner. Despite many fools in here calling for the boys jersey, he wouldn’t have been playing there if he wasn’t the best we had at the time.

On the DEs, as I remember, we really didn’t develop much of a pass rush until the later part of the season in resent years. And it seemed to me that it is indeed getting better in the past couple of games. Hawkfan, could there be any other measure of improvement other than sack totals? Hurried passes (maybe why we are picking a few off now), altered run direction, just generally being in the backfield better. Incidentally, its 15 now, which is really right there with the rest of the SEC except Vandy. Believe we had 12 going into UF game last year.

Florida is the greastest team ever. Last year was just a fluke. That wasn’t Tim Tebow playing last year, that was his gay life partner Thomas! And that wasn’t the real Florida defense that played last year that was the florida high school recruits that Coach Meyer decided to play that day to give the defense some time off for fall break.

But this year it will be 65-6 at the Half, coming from 9 Tebow rushing TD right up the middle! Then Harvin will score 3 himself in the 3rd quarter, and then Tebow will throw for 6 TD’s. So that will make the final score 128-12 with the Dawgs scoring on the final play after they put the freshman team in.

Jaysussss man let up on the Martinez crap already. What did expect him to say? You honestly expected he’d outline his changes and expectations of the defense for Urbane Cryer to read?

Dude, you don’t have to like him or agree with him. I have my problems with him and his schemes more often than not. Richt is the HC and the only one that needs to be pleased by Martinez. It all begins and ends with CMR. Are you calling for his head?

Martinez, like him and his style or not, has enabled us to win seven games so far this year with still a shot at a NC. The players on defense are just as quick, hungry and physical as any in the nation. Your wish that Martinez be fired won’t happen this year. Give it up already and support the Dawgs on the positive side as you are trying to do on the negative.

Georgia Fans……we were in the same spot with our D at this time last season. No one had stepped up to be that huge playmaker. Then nearly every defensive player we had either hit or tackled Tebow and the rest is history. Geno Atkins had a HUGE game against FLA last year. Up to that point, folks barely knew who he was. Look for Corvey Irvin to step up this week. He’s doing a great job filling in for the loss of Jeff Owens. And the move to put my boy BEvans at safety is brilliant. He has the potential to be a Sean Jones type safety. He can hit and make tackles but his speed will allow him to be all over the field and pick folks off all day. Good call Willie!

If UGA keeps FLA to 30 points or less, they’ll have a realistic shot at winning this game, which will be somewhat of a track meet.

Tackle, tackle tackle. Make the tackles. No YAC’s, Do not allow the big play.

On offense, run 24 until they bring 8 in the box, and then let Matthew Stafford carve up that young FLA secondary like a thanksgiving turkey!

FLA has the edge in punk/kick off returns, but UGA has the better field goal kicker (if the game is decided by field goals, I like Blair Walsh’s range and accuracy)

I loved what I saw out of Darryl Gamble last week. His ability to drop deep quickly and read the qb’s eyes could really help out the pass defense. I can’t remember the last time a linebacker was so effective in pass coverage for UGA against a high quality opponent. Florida will have to at least account for him on Saturday.

I wouldn’t look for the GAtors to do anything majorly different than what they have the last 2 games. To try to change something at this point in preparation would send a message to yout team that you are worried that what you have been doing isn’t good enough,(same is true for GA)I think Urban Meyer will come out throwing, and try to get his little speedsters the ball in the open field. That’s the thing about Fla. a little dink pass over the middle can potentially go all the way, that’s why you probably won’t see much blitzing by Ga. THis game will be the biggest test of the year for our front four on D to get pressure on Tebow.

I think our best defence will be to open up our offense, score the first 3 possessions get a 21-7 lead and get them a little anxious and trying too hard. With that said, they could just as easily do that to us…

Willie the Weasel needs to do what his boss did, he “NEEDS TO HIRE A DEFENSIVE SECONDARY COACH” and do like Richt does just be the boss of the defense. He has been a lousy secondary coach his whole career at UGA, they don’t cover worth a crap and they aren’t physical at all. Just wacth the defensive backs at UGA they all try to tackle with their heads down, they arm tackle and they try to tackle too low. The ultimate solution would be to “Fire Willie” but that ain’t going to happen to the Richt’s best man so do the next best thing, get a secondary coach who has a clue!

If you want a formula for the dawg’s D, it’s simple… Put Asher Allen on Percy everytime he’s in the game, and let Ronnie Curran shadow Tebow all day. If Harvin is in the backfield use Curran on Percy and the other linebacker for Tebow. That’s 80% of their offense. Stop them and we win!!! For an extra measure, let’s blitz the every other play.

darren, how many punts do you think we have defended in the past 5 years, maybe 250? I’m sure we have converted at least 3 fake punts in 5 years too, so that “weakness” must be universal.

ARdawg, great point. Support with negativity simply does NOT work. At some point, it become suspiciously more about the griper, than the gripee.

For all the whiners and babies on this blog b_tchin about CWM, tuck your tail between your legs and stay home. I’m so sick of everyone saying how great UF’s offense is. They have speed, guess what, so do we. We held them to 23 offensive points last year, and I believe we also helped them on one score by kicking off on our own 8 yard line after the GATOR STOMP. I think we go into this game with a little dawg swagger and punch Urban Crier & Co. in the mouth. HEY CHIP, WHY DON’T YOU EXPLAIN HOW UF’S D IS GOING TO STOP OUR OFFENSE…AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN!! Mikey, although I’d take it, lordy I hope we dont have to sit through an OT.

Ed, I agree, those picks from out of the zone were pretty.

Supes, actually we have a slight edge in punt return yards. I think you are going to see exactly what you wanted. #24 till they commit the extra man, then play action, although you would think we take a few shots early since they surely know that’s the plan.

bone, the problem with blitzing every other down is that while we might get to Tebow, he will just be standing there grinning, not holding the ball.

Altamaha Dawg… pass the those rose colored glasses around son, you’ve been hogging them all year long when it comes to our defense. Willie just can hope and wish with his wait and react defense because that’s all he knows. He ain’t like Saban who has obviously grown a pair and will tell you that his objective is to dominate the opponent on each play. Willie’s Defense is Chicken Sh1t and everyone in the frikin college football world including my wife Knows it. Our Offense has been fortunate enough to bail us out except for the Bama debacle.

I’m not worried about Martinez’ comments… I’m not looking for a D coordinator that can fire up the fan base the week of the game.

I was disapointed in our D at LSU. We didn’t blitz much in the first half. We almost always brought 4 and we did get some pressure with 4 better than we have in most other games this year. It wasn’t enough, though.

It seemed that on their first drive when we finally blitzed when they were at our 10 yard line… they threw a screen pass and scored and I think that weakened Martinez’ resolve to blitz more.

Of course, on the very next series, they got about 15 yards on another screen pass when we only rushed 4, so not blitzing at all doesn’t seem to be the answer.

We can score points, I’d like to see us take a few more chances defensively… even it it results in a few big plays. I’m not talking about blitzing 6 guys half the time, but how about 8-10 blitzes a game and another half dozen blitz looks where we back out of it at the last moment before the snap.

The tackling was TERRIBLE against LSU. Hopefully, we play a great game against Florida in all three phases of the game and get the W. If we win 10-7 or 45-42, I’ll take a W any way we can get it.

Wouldn’t want to make a guy like Martinez, who makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, accountable for the 500 yards of total offense LSU ripped on our defense last week.

Chip Do you remember the blitz package against Arizona ST. where Rennie Curran blitzed up the middle untouched and not only sacked the QB. but hit him so hard his helmet came off? Anybody on this blog that don’t think these guys are playing all out need to wake up. These young men are playing in a league where speed is king and one missed step can make even the best defenders look bad. Ease up on Willie and his defense they’re playing hard. ARdawg, AltamahaDawg, et al,:

We’re not asking for Martinez to give up his Florida gameplan - that would obviously be idiotic. We’re asking to for Martinez to take responsibility for the some of the horrific defensive play we’ve seen this season, and to discuss what he is doing to ensure we don’t see any more of it - you know CHANGES he’s making. If you believe that is an unreasonable request, you do not understand accountability. I face it every day at my job. Do you?

How many division 1 defensive coordinators do we have on this board?

Georgia has lost one game and that game was lost by the ENTIRE TEAM. Offense, Defense and Special Teams all failed to contribute in that first half against Bama.

Last week the ENTIRE TEAM won the game. The offense scored TD’s, the defense had 3 picks and 2 TD’s, specials had a long FG and our punts were awesome.

You could sit here all day and pick on every single thing and drive yourself insane. Who cares as long as the Dawgs win?

A Gator just entered your blog. FYI. This is not the Florida defense you guys witnessed last year. The Gators had no front seven last year and that made the DB look worse than they actually were. This year, the strength of the Gator D is the front 7, and the DBs are playing great, too (maybe better than they really are). This game, simply put, is going to be one of the best college football games ever to watch. It is going to be two really good, if not outstanding, teams going full blast after one another. I can’t wait. I think the Gators are the better team overall, but not by much. It is going to be a close one, either way. Go Gators!

Hey folks, is it not evident that defenses in the SEC this year are very weak? Looks as though the only way to win is to get in a track meet and out score the other guy! And look at the big 12 also, what defense out there? Appears that todays offenses are way ahead of the defenses, and we (UGA) are right on track with that scenario. We will have to come out fast in this game and not get far behind because this one is going to be a high scoring affair! Me thinks we can win in the latter stages on a Walsh field goal.

By BE#3

The entire world is in love with Will Muschamp. He’s a good DC and motivator no doubt. But UGA is #21 in total D and Texas is #43. Do you hear folks at Texas wanting him fired? Hell, they’re gonna be lucky to keep him! Our D has strengths & weaknesses but so does every other team in the nation.

By My View

October 29, 2008 6:45 PM | Link to this

I’m starting to think that all of the questions from media and fans about the D is healthy. Maybe the players will see it as a challenge, as will the coaches. Or at least let them know that we know what our obvious weaknesses are.

Watch Alabama play D, and watch UGA play D. UGA players have as much if not more experience and we surely have talent that’s at least equal to Bama. But Bama passes the “eye test” in a way that we do not. NOW THATS COACHING.

I’ll be surprised if the Dawgs can stake a 2-score+ lead at any point in this game. However, I really like our chances if we can keep it close going into the 4th quarter with Stafford leading the way.

Also, against a team like UF…it’s going to be all about ball-control and keeping their track stars off the field as much as possible. If Moreno gets 20+ carries…I really like our chances.

Sure, but when somebody walks in off the street and doesn’t really understand my job, and doesn’t care to understand, I dont feel obligated to respond to them when they constantly whine that we dont do things the way they want it done, despite the fact that my company is ultra successful year in and year out. So to sum up: accountable to my boss, check…. accountable to my co-workers and staff, check, accountable to every last pesky customer that nobody in town could ever make happy, No , I’m not.

And please, no flipping coach in America is going to pick this point, the week before the monster game, to confess any weakness, mistakes, or changes to insure a damn thing. Thats just silly. Would you really want him too? geeez

TampaGator, one thing is for sure, you guys certainly are having an easier time sizing up your squad than us. Frankly we (fans) are still trying to figure out where we are. I don’t think that UGA is playing at the level it ended up last year, BUT I think its safe to say we are bringing a team that is playing better than what we were going into last year’s cocktail party. Well said, Altamaha.

You people need to remember that WM(and MB for that matter) can only put the players in position to succeed, BUT they can’t do it for them.

Ex. Martinez put MLB Darryl Gamble in position to succeed via the “soft zone” drop you morons always complain about. What did Gamble do? He read his key, made a break on the ball, and made a successful play(the two INT’s).

The players have always been in the proper positions to succeed, now if they miss a tackle, the players themselves have to take responsibility for that.

Just as when Mike Bobo calls a play action pass and the LB’s and safties bite, allowing a WR(AJG) vertical route wide open. Now is it Bobo’s fault that Stafford isn’t successful in always hitting the WR(even though the coach made the right call?), or is it the players fault for not EXECUTING the damn play.

I know these are college kids, but you morons who are always complaining about our OC and DC need to start placing some of the blame where it belongs, the players! We’ve got a fine coaching staff. Fine players too. They just won’t always meet your idiotic expectations of winning every damn game 100 - 0.

Yes I have accountability running out of my azz on a daily basis but, what’s your point? You’re comparing apples and oranges. It’s not Martinez’s job to be accountable to you, me or Chip. He is on Richt’s team and is accountable to him. The buck stops with Richt, if you don’t like the defense HE gives you then b!tch and moan about him.

My point is: all your belly aching in the world is not going to result in a CWM firing. I don’t think you guys doing the b!tching of the defense any less of a fan. But why is your energy on the negative when it serves no useful purpose in supporting the Dawgs.

Richt is an excellent coach and I believe that. I am personally gobbling up everything he is feeding and right now that includes a defense thats questionable but, they are getting the job done. We are still in the NC hunt.

I don’t blame CWM for getting soft in the LSU game. We built a nice lead, they were forced to come from behind and making mistakes. Most DC’s would have done the same thing.

Tampa Gator Good post! And good luck to your Gators but I believe we are better than you. Much like last year for you guys, you’ll always have next year…LOL

31-0 at the half?!!!

Many of you have scoffed at my previous blogs about your defense - well, well, well - kill the messenger. Looks like there are several objective Uga fans that realize the same as I do:

1) Uga defense is a joke - not physical, not disciplined, not very good.

2) Uga football is built on the philosophy to “out athlete” their opponent. This backfires against teams that line up and are physical - the teams that will smack you in the mouth.

As described earlier - Uga football is built to be a beautiful sports car - but runs on regular gas!!!!!

Bama Stan’s Prediction:

Florida 58 - Uga 17 (and it won’t be that close).

Urban will try to hang 60 plus as he administers his own version of the “Gator Stomp” to a hapless, out classed, out coached, outmanned - uga football team. Season over for uga!!!

After UGA goes 3 and out - it will be 14-0 before Uga knows what happened.

Mark my words - this game will actually be over by the end of the first quarter - Gators will score more against uga in the first quarter than uga will score in the entire game.

And then Urban will pile up the score to totally humiliate uga …and will succeed. GATOR STOMP

The beat down will be so severe - look for uga to probably lose to either KY, struggle against AU - and could lose to GT.

Uga will finish the regular season 9-3 at best …..and possibly 8-4.

Here are some stats I compiled on WM’s tenure as defensive coordinator at UGA. I got the data from Georgia’s official football page and added the numbers myself, so I may have made errors- feel free to double-check me. IMO, the two most important stats are wins v losses and points allowed.

Georgia has played Florida three times since WM took over the defense in 2005. The scores were as follows: 14-10 Florida, 21-14 Florida, and 42-30 Georgia. That’s 35 total points for Florida in their wins. Our defensive game against UF last year was outstanding, despite allowing 30 pts- Tebow’s booboo did not affect our rush- it affected his usefulness as a rusher. The D has been blown out twice under WM, losing 51-33 to UT last year and the 41-30 loss to Bama this year. The only team WM has a losing record to is UF (1-2). Overall, UGA is 37-10 during this time (78.7% wins), 20-9 SEC (69.0%). The one non-SEC defeat under WM was West Virginia in the 2005 Sugar Bowl by 38-35. WM is undefeated against the PAC-10, Big-12, ACC (thanks, Jackets!) and assorted others.

There is not a lot you can do to prepare for Florida from a schemeing standpoint. This is a physicality issue. They create mental boundries in your head. You line your Dbs and Lbs fit what appears to be something like you just saw the play before and because of the speed they can do something you would never suspect. Its diabolicle.

You have got to be physical. The whole premis of this offense is speed and timing. If you dirupt the either and they know they are not playing Fish St because you cracked a skull the play before they start to loose there grasp of what they are doing. They have nothing to fall back on. They still cant line up and run the ball like us.

Watch a replay of Nebraska Vs Florida in there NC clash in the 90s.

Well, actually yes, last year and he turned it down. There will be other offers, and he wil take one, we will get a new guy and I give him 2 years before a whole new crop of jr.DC can’t stand him. Just part of the territory. There are also very many long times career DC that have never taken HC positions. Was there a point to that question?

I’ll not wade through your very adult tirade there, but calmly explain. YOU,as you point out , are accountable to your boss, so is WM. Your boss is the one who is best prepared to understand and appreciate or disapprove of the job you do. YOU are not accountable to somebody who simply wants to talk about your job, without any credential in a industry blog. As ARDawg points out in thie particular situation, Coach Willie Martinez is NOT accountable to you. You are not the equivalent of a major shareholder. You are the equivalent of somebody who bought 2 shares on scotttrade.

BTW I do not patronize “football fans”, just folks who use terms like : clueless, sucks, sh$tty, always this, never that, 8 straight weeks on nothing being right, in lieu of actual real term that mean something. I’m pretty comfortable with the sensibility and knowledge of the very many “football fans” in here that I tend to agree with. Bama Stan, This is coming from the fan of a team that squeaked by KY and lost to Lousiana-Monroe just a year ago. Bama beat us, I’ll give you that but it was one game (really just one half). UGA (especially the offense) seems to be clicking on all cylinders and have too many weapons to score a measly 17 points, as you predict. A more realistic prediction would be both teams scoring in the 30s, with UGA winning a close one.

under WM, 8 times the defense has given up 30 or more points. them the facts folks draw your own conclusions.

anyone think we would of been better off still having neal callaway?

All of you predicting 60 Gator points are idiots, for one simple reason; the Gator D- won’t be able to stop Georgia from having 8 to 12 play drives, and FL literally won’t come close to have enough time to score that many points. I don’t care how incredible Tebow, Harvin, Demps, Rainey, or whoever is; they won’t be able to do much standing frustrated on their sideline. Georgia wins this one, and it isn’t even nearly as close as many of you think. A single offensive mistake similar to the pick 6’s LSU threw to us last week, and Mr. Hyper-emotional Tebow is sure to have at least one (anyone else have the pic of him bawling after last years LSU loss as their screensaver?), and this is a 14+ pt Georgia win. Mark it down.

Oh my god, this game is going to be so bad! There are great teams and then there are the 2008 Florida Gators! And their coach! Oh my gosh! I mean if you had a pantheon of great college coaches, it would include Urban Meyer and Nick Saban . Not only are they brilliant coaches but they are also great authors! Everyone should read their books because they are quite the page turner. Mark Richt is such a minor leaguer! Adopting orphans and building homes for Habitat for Humanity? Psshh… that’s for losers! Real football coaches know how to properly motivate their players, like giving their QB’s hand jobs before the game or running off for an NFL contract! That is what quality coaching is all about!

C’mon lizards, Only 2 days left to make up a fake non-existent Tebow injury… say for example, maybe a tender shoulder that so impacted both sides of the ball as to excuse a loss. I find it interesting that it was fully healed (by admission of Turban and Tebow) the following week even though he was sacked more in the UGA game than the entire rest of the season. Everyone believed your last excuse, maybe if you act now you can justify this week’s loss as well. 31-0 at the half.

Who’s The Better Football Coach ?

Coach Richt or Urban Meyer ?

1 for Meyer with Ron Zook’s players, none without them.

0 for Coach Richt.

Points : 1 for Meyer, 0 for Coach Richt.

SEC Championships :

2 for Coach Richt.

1 for Urban Meyer.

Motivation :

1 for Coach Richt for The Celebration before rules prevented it.

0 for Urban 3rd person Meyer, who in writing guarantees a retaliation 2 days from now, because he knows he was out-coached.

Character :

Hands down, no comparison here :

Coach Richt 1 for coming to UGA and staying at UGA after going to Florida State and staying there. This is year 8 at UGA for Coach Richt, a Christian who speaks The Truth.

-1 Minus One for Urban Meyer who tried to bench Chris Leak, who only won him the MNC.

-1 Minus One for Urban Crybaby for showing the example to Tim Tebow 3 weeks ago to cry after losing to Ole Miss, when Urban Crier cried in the press conference after his loss at Florida. God Almighty you whining crybabies.

Urban Meyer was at 2 different schools for 2 years each, and now at Florida for 3 years. How good are Urban Meyer’s recruits ? Not Ron Zook’s, but Urban Meyer’s ?

1 for Coach Richt.

This game balances it and Matthew Stafford is a much better QB than Tim Tebow. Knowshon Moreno is better than Tim Tebow who is the leading rusher again for Florida this year and never has been nor ever will be a Quarterback. AJ Green is better than Percy Harvin. What kind of a name is Percy for a girl anyway ? Percy Harvin is used by Urban Meyer at other positions besides Wide Receiver anyway. AJ Green always will be a better WR than Percy Harvin including like Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno better at the next level than Tim Tebow, AJ Green better at the next level than Percy Harvin.

Starting Linebacker Jerimy Finch transferred to Indiana 8 June 2008. 4 August 2008 John Reaves Star Florida QB arrested aggravated assault with a gun and cocaine possession. FL BB Star Teddy DuPay charged with RAPE and hitting a woman 19 June 2008, bound over. Florida Coach Urban Meyer guaranteeing in writing that 2 days from now there will be retaliation. Frankly, anyone talking about himself in the 3rd person in 2008 demonstrates NO DISCIPLINE himself, and this is most certainly NOT the case with Coach Richt.

After the Mythical National Championship with Ron Zook’s players, Urban Meyer saw 7 of his players arrested after the game. 7, including four (4) felonies. Coach Richt has a problem like this ? BS.

How much control over his team does Urban Meyer really have ? Go ahead. Tell me.

Before the game started even, UGA scored right out of the box to lead 7-0 at the beginning of the damn game. There was no rule against Celebration. There is now, but there was not then other than the two 15-yard penalties imposed on our kickoff leading to your Florida score to tie the game at 7-7. Urban Meyer had the whole entire game to inspire and motivate his players. Florida LOST by several Touchdowns 30-42 at the site of The Gator Bowl every year in JAX.

Florida does not have a winning record there over UGA the last 4 years running now.

Urban Meyer was out-coached by Coach Richt.

If Urban Meyer has coaching instincts during the game, where in the hell were they demonstrated during the entire game against us last season after The Celebration ?

Coach Richt figured this out, before the game.

It’s called a Game Plan.

Games Against Teams who in fact ended that season in the Final AP Poll Top 25 :

Urban Crybaby :

Lost to No. 8 Alabama 3-31.

Lost to No. 6 LSU 17-21 and cried in the press conference afterwards.

Beat No. 10 UGA 14-10 when DJ Shockley was injured UGA Won SEC. Florida ended No. 12.

Beat No. 23 Florida State 34-7.

Beat No. 25 Tennessee 21-20.

Beat No. 3 LSU 23-10.

Lost to No. 9 Auburn 17-27.

Beat No. 15 Arkansas 38-28. SEC Champions.

Beat No. 2 Ohio State suckeyes MNC 41-14 like 9 other SEC teams have.

Beat No. 12 Tennessee 59-20.

Lost to No. 15 Auburn 17-20.

Lost to No. 1 LSU 24-28.

Lost to No. 2 UGA 30-42.

Lost to No. 18 Michigan 35-41.

Beat current BCS No. 19 LSU 51-21.

8-7 vs. Final AP Poll Top 25 teams for Urban Meyer.

8-7.

I thought Urban Meyer was the best football coach in America and Legend in his own mind ?

If he loses this game, he will NOT have a winning record against teams who end up that season in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

And, of course, he racked that up with Ron Zook’s recruits and NOT with Tim Tebow as his Starting QB.

Coach Richt is 4-2 last year and this year so far.

Urban Meyer is 2-4.

That’s with Urban Meyer’s recruits.

And, you think you can say that Urban Meyer is a better Coach than Coach Richt ? BS

Urban Meyer is not a better man than Coach Richt, not a better recruiter than Coach Richt, not a better in-game strategy than Coach Richt, not a better record against Final AP Poll Top 25 teams than Coach Richt, not a better leader by example than Coach Richt, not a better disciplinarian, not as good a Game Plan against Final AP Poll Top 25 teams, not better football instincts than Coach Richt, and Coach Richt does not speak of himself in the 3rd person in 2008 making written assaults on our team because he was out-coached and knows it.

If it were not for Ron Zook, Urban Meyer would never have accomplished a damn thing in his life compared to Coach Richt whom he doesn’t hold a candle to.

Note to BamaStan:

31-0 will probably be the number of games UGA wins before Tech wins another game in this series. Thanks for the tip.

Good luck against the Gators, Dawgs. Give ‘em hell!

You “Good Dawgs” should rein in the leases of the trash talkers who are barking all over the Tech blog.

Chip, will you please ask the editors to change the lead-in comment on The Vent? The spitting the steak across the room is almost a year old. It’s my pet peeve, but can’t someone show a little imagination and get rid of that?

You can’t prove which conference is better, the teams in each conference would have to play each other

ramdawg, yeah the sec is dominant this year, please explain how the sec is dominant, and don’t say cause you won the past 2 NC’s, everyone on this blog knows the current system we are in is BS

ramdawg, the problem with people like you is, you are all talk, you can say the SEC is dominate but you can’t prove it. That’s the way most SEC fans are and that is why SEC teams usually get over looked when it comes to bowl games, the conference is full of overrated teams.

END QUOTE

I’ve never heard so much BS from one poster in all my lifetime. Don’t tell you that The SEC has the Most BCS National Championships, including both of the Last Two (2) in a Row because the current BCS is a flawed system ? You are out of your mind. You pick out 4 games The SEC Lost this season, none by ANY of The Top SEC Teams, and think that is “ PROOF “ The SEC is NOT THE BEST CONFERENCE in Football yet again this year as it is every year ?

By ............................................BuLLdawg

You lie and say The SEC is overlooked in Bowl Games. Last Season too, there were Two (2) SEC Teams in BCS Bowl Games. Both Won. You want to try actually proving your BS ? The SEC leads the nation in Attendance every year, and has the Richest TV Contract in the History of the Game. Your biased unproven BS is that The SEC only has Fair-Weather Fans. Excuse me, The SEC has led the nation in Attendance 22 Consecutive Seasons. You were told that The SEC went 7-2 in Bowl Games last season as well. Obviously, you do not know that that is the Most Bowl Games ever Won by ANY Conference EVER. And, while we are talking about Bowl Games you want to say The SEC is overlooked in, The SEC has Won 184 Bowl Games, lost only 147 and tied 9. That is not only the Most Bowl Wins by Any Conference Ever, but it is also the Highest Percentage of Bowl Games Won. And, you want to talk about Bowl Games ONLY YOU SAY The SEC is somehow unproven by you, overlooked. The nearest conference is the PAC-10 at 105-93-5. for a .530 Winning Percentage while The SEC is .554 Winning Percentage. The ACC is only 79-78-2. The Big 10 is only 97-106-1. The Big XII is only 42-44. The Big East is 37-32 for .536 Winning Percentage. CBS pays us $55 million a year to show 1 game a week. ESPN pays us $150 million a year. In BCS Bowl Games, The SEC is 11-4. The PAC-10 is 8-4. Our 4 BCS NC are by far the Most Ever. And, not only has The SEC Won the Last Two (2) in a Row, but we have also Won 3 of The Last 5.

You say these games have to be played, and then we would know. Dumb idiot, what do you call the Results of these games then ? Oh, they don’t count. BS they don’t count.

The ACC is 1-9 in BCS Bowl Games to our 11-4. When we Won 7 Bowl Games 7-2 last season, the ACC went 2-6. The ACC is 2-17 against non-conference Top 10 teams the last 10 years.

The Big 10 is on a current 4 in a Row BCS Bowl Loss Streak dating back 4 years now and counting.

The SEC distributed $122 million dollars per team just 5 months ago. Where were you, with your head in the sand ?

There are Seven (7) SEC Football Coaches making over $2.6 million dollars a year. There is no conference close son, you idgit. No Proof indeed.

There are NONE (0) SEC Football Teams on NCAA Probation.

The Conference with the Most Players in the NFL, is The SEC, 263.

Oklahoma has Won 5 of the Last 8 Big XII Championships, yet Oklahoma has Lost 4 Consecutive BCS Bowl Games.

5 Different Coaches in The SEC have Won National Championship in Football. There is nothing like this in Coaching Ranks in ANY Conference.

The Strength of Schedule for Football Teams all games played every single year, always has The SEC with The Most Difficult Schedules. This is not just non-conference, but all games including against The SEC which is the Conference at the Top of the Polls when EVERY SEASON IS OVER.

Last season for example in the Final AP Poll LSU 1, UGA 2, Tennessee 12, Florida 13 and Auburn 15. That’s 5 of the Top 15 teams and there is NO PROOF you say that The SEC is the Best Conference in Football.

You are so FOS.

There were Six (6) SEC Teams ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 the year before last, also an NCAA Record.

There were Five (5) SEC Teams ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 15 the year before that in addition; but, you say there is no proof that The SEC is the Best Conference in College Football.

You are so full of ENVY of every point in this post, that you cannot address 1 single point of proof that these do not PROVE The SEC is DOMINANT in college football.

Overlooked in Bowls.

BS.

The SEC is not PROVEN to be The BEST Conference in Football.

BS.

Dawg fans, it is my sincere hope that our pleas for a change in defensive philosphy is being heard. You play to win, not play to not lose. Coach Martinez did not change his soft approach until after last year’s Tennesee game when the Dawg nation was outraged and he then, and only then, modified his approach.

SPECIAL TEAMS COACH: PASS RUSH!!!!!!, instead of playing for a fair catch by our punt returner consistently!!!! And, our opponent’s punter having a record distance day and us giving up field position. We can do better and I believe we will because the Bulldawg Nation cares enough to speak plainly addressing our weaknesses and because we know that we have the athletes to make it happen. CWM let our defensive players play up rather than playing monitone ball.

I am thrilled having Brannan Southerland back and believe he is our best blocker on the team, period……. and our offensive is benefiting greatly because of his presence. GO,DAWGGGGGS!

bulldawg, I am shocked that you are not on the short list of any vacant football coaching position at any level. You mention Urban Crier, when all of you dog fans are whinners when things do not go your way. You are a legend in your own mind as well. No matter who wins the gator/dog match up or who wins the SEC, they will not be in the BCS title game. Texas/Penn ST. or Texas/USC will be there. It appears it is you who is envious. The dogs lose to the gators.

OH PLEASSSEEEEE kick to “Lightning in a bottle”. James if given enough chances will end up in the end zone. The most elusive punt returner in the nation, thats why he’s the sporting news all american first team as a punt returner. No one in college football is as consistent as James. Usually on punt returns in the swamp everyone kinda watchs without much interest. Now, it’s the most exciting part of the game. Watch all the gator fans stand right after a punt coming his way, we all expect atleast a thirty yard return.

UGA fans - you got you butts kicked. But I can remember when UGA kicked the Gator’s butts on a yearly basis. UGA v UF was an automatic win on the UGA schedule. SpurDog changed all of that. You enjoyed a great victory last year, only to have it spoiled by an infantile ploy by CMR. Not a wise move. What are you gonna do next year? Post pictures of Urban Meyer calling “Time Out” in your locker room?

The UF/UGA series is a classic college football rivalry, & I hope it continues to be so. Good luck to you, but keep your recruiters out of Florida.
