UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Patchwork lineup for LSU game
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from the press box high above the field at Tiger Stadium. It is an absolutely gorgeous day for football. Temperature is 79 degrees with a slight breeze with almost completely clear blue sky. It couldn’t be more different than the weather I left in Atlanta yesterday, cold, windy and rainy enough to delay my flight an hour and a half.
It’s about 40 minutes before No. 7 Georgia and No. 11 LSU kickoff here in what it a fairly rare matchup. As non-traditional SEC opponents, these two teams only play home-and-home every fourth year. Of course, they also have twice recently in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta (2003 and 2005). The Bulldogs will be going for their third straight win in the series.
A few observations as we get set for kickoff here:
Coach Mark Richt had said tight end Aron White (shoulder) wasn’t going to make the trip here after getting hurt during Tuesday’s practice. But sure as the world, there he is, dressed out and going through drills as if he’s going to play. Maybe he’s just insurance. Bruce Figgins is lined up with the ones and there is a white guy wearing the No. 93 lining up there as well (maybe Justin Fields?). Tripp Chandler (shoulder) obviously didn’t make the trip. Kiante Tripp is back in his 75 jersey and is working with the No. 2 O-line at right tackle,
I haven’t been able to locate linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (knee) anywhere so I’m thinking he didn’t make the trip either. I see former fullback Ben Boyd working with the No. 2 defensive unit.
Stay tuned throughout the game as I’ll be providing updates.

GEORGIA 7, LSU 0
Speaking of that patchwork lineup, one of the guys playing because a starter is out — middle linebacker Darryl Gamble — just picked off LSU’s first pass of the game and ramble about 45 yards for a touchdown.
Deferring to the second half looks like a brilliant call right now. 20 seconds and Georgia’s up one score.

Good thing the Dogs got that early gift. Tigers just ripped right down the field and scored to tie it. Jarrett Lee hit Brandon Lefell on a middle screen for a 10-yard touchdown on third-and-goal. But the big problem was how easily LSU drove the field. 10 plays, 72 yards over 4:54. Charles Scott did most of the work: 5 carries, 39 yards.
We’re just 6:39 into this thing.

Well, I didn’t see a scorefest coming in this game but that’s what we’ve got so far.
Dogs just answered with a 14-play, 78-yard drive that consumed 6:24 off the clock. Fred Munzenmaier scored on a one-yard run on first-and-goal to cap it off at the 3:10 mark of the first quarter.
Dogs had three third-down conversions, the biggest on third-and-10 at the Georgia 22 to start the drive.
LSU back on offense, so …

Another long scoring drive for the Bulldogs. Knowshon Moreno took care of most of it himself with a 47-yard run on the first play from the 29. Running through a huge hole and cutting off a nice block from FB Brannan Southerland, the Georgia tailback went right up the middle of the field from left tackle.
A nice 16-yard catch by Demiko Goodman got them to the 8 and, finally, a beautiful catch by Kenneth Harris on a fade route left got the touchdown.
4 plays, 61 yards, 1:31

Tigers get a 51-yard field goal from Colt David. Became LSU’s all-time leading scorer on that kick.
Dogs’ defense stiffened once LSU got into their territory. May have gotten away with a pass interference but they said ball tipped at the line of scrimmage.

Georgia’s defense has looked like it has all season not very good. The loss of Owen’s really hurts when we start playing quality opponents. We haven’t put any pressure on the quarterback all year. We also cannot stop the run. Even if we find a way to win this game Floriday will beat us next week.

Dawgs have to play with momentum if they are going to win this one. You cannot afford to blow a 2 TD lead and rely on FG’s to win it. They have got to improve in the red zone if they intend in having a chance in this one (and against UF). GO DAWGS!

We get a big lead and then we try to play conservatively. That will work only when your defense can stop the other team consistently. So far, we have not been able to stop the run. This means Bobo will have to open up the offense. We need Stafford to play disciplined and to spread the ball around. If LSU plays man coverage, it falls to Stafford and the receivers to keep us in the game.

This CBS announcer sure is talking up Stafford. He is 8-14 for 76 yards! WTF? I am still waiting to see what is so great about this QB. He came in as the top recruit (supposedly) 3 years ago, but David Greene I thought was a better QB, and where is he now. When I think top recruit, I think Terrelle Pryor at Ohio State. Now that guy is a QB, and as a freshman, he is getting the press that Stafford has never gotten, except by the biased AJC, and now looks like a biased CBS.
I travel for work all over the country, and when I leave the south, I don’t hear anyone talking about Stafford in any other part of the country. I guess Stafford is just like UGA, way overrated, and a perennial pretender in college football.

That 3rd down sack is the reason UGA plays the short game so much. The O line struggles and the receivers don’t know how to find the open spots. I don’t know if it is scheme or what, receivers just don’t seem to be able to adjust to what the defense does. Stafford can’t stand back there for five seconds without getting sacked.

That’s about as hard-fought a touchdown scoring as you’ll ever see.
Dogs go 72 yards in seven plays and score on a 49-yard pass from Stafford to A.J. Green. Here’s why that was so important.
Don’t know if you can tell but this place was off-the-charts loud. LSU was starting to get real aggressive and come after twice. But twice on that drive the Dogs burned them, including the TD strike to Green on third-and-10. Also, Green had dropped his previous pass and hadn’t caught a ball all day.
So really big drive there. 8:21 left in third.

What a run by Knowshon Moreno, a 68-yarder for a TD where he changed direction and bounced off two would-be tacklers… .
You may have noticed Moreno gesturing to the LSU student section. Word is that they had gotten hold of his cell phone number and were calling it all this week. I haven’t been able to verify that with Knowshon but it would appear so.
Stupid penalty on Dogs (late hit out of bounds by Logan Gray on subsequent kickoff return) puts LSU in business in Georgia territory.

CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY IN THE WORLD CMR WOULD HAVE WALSH ATTEMPT A 55-YARD FIELD GOAL
It wasn’t close, but never mind that. If you’re not going to pooch punt — the right call in my opinion — why not go for it? I know Walsh is a good kicker but that’s a dangerous play to me in a game like this. Even if you just punt to the end zone LSU is pushed by 18 yards from where they ended up taking over… .
Tigers are one-dimensional on offense right now. Nothing but run. Dogs have to sellout on stopping that.

we play good some games and others it’s like - where are we, what are we doing. none the less - we have been winning 10 games….etc. however, i think before we go to the NC level - somethings got to change - either him in being replaced, or his further development as a coach.
i would love to see him be successful but,…. let’s just win baby.
bring on Fla - should be a GREAT game - both teams are peaking right now.

Matthew Stafford gets into the act. Scores on a seven-run on a gutsy QB draw call.
63 yards on seven plays, 3:40. Big, big drive.
Dogs by three touchdowns now with 10:49 to play. They’d really have to screw up to blow this one at this point.

Nice run by #7. Pull Moreno and just kill the clock. We seemed to escape any major injuries and need to rest up for the Gaytors.
Chip, I think the 55 attempt made sense when you want to show Walsh you believe in him, and he has been rumored to be showing that distance in practices. Just mis-kicked it. Anyway, GO DAWGS!!!

GEORGIA 45, LSU 31
Hold on there, folks. It ain’t over yet.
LSU just went 73 yards in five plays to score and make it a 14-poiunt game again. Keiland Williams went 66 yards on a pass play when LB Rennie Curran peeled off his coverage to come back for QB Lee, who was rolling left.
That only took 1:58. Still 8:47 to play.
This could still end badly for the Bulldogs. Going to be up to the offense today folks.

:) well, good thing is our boys will learn a lot from this game; they are still very young.
sounds like they got caught looking in the headlights in the Alabama game (sorry i had to even bring it up), and that one was at home. (i got that impression from a remark by Coach in the ajc this week).
now we’re in Baton Rouge and playing a lot better. sounds like we are getting better each week - just in time for the gators.
i think at this point in the schedule, looking at the schedule before the start of the season, only having one loss is good. we are still in position to achieve our goals.
next week is what it’s all about.
oh, i just checked on espn.com again (lsu at the 24; 1st down) - don’t cry rockdawg. time should expire on us! hopefully!!!

The offense was stellar. D-line was okay. Linebackers good (Gamble was great, rest okay). Corners and safeties were pitiful. Florida may lay 100 on us if defensive backfield doesn’t learn how to cover and tackle and prevent the big play. D-backs need to go back to basics.

I agree that Martinez is the worst defensive coordinator in the SEC, if not the nation. He needs to drop down to the middle school level, where he might excel. He simply is not ready for any college position, let alone a top-tier SEC school. I don’t know who Richt could get to replace him in the middle of a season, so we may just be screwed for the rest of this year. However, he definitely needs to go after the season is over. Maybe he will do everyone a favor and resign so that Richt won’t have to fire him.

Richt has won four out of the last five times he has played those teams. Three in a row againt lSU (none of them close) beat the Gators last year (not close) and beat Bama in their house last year (very close). Sounds like you are basing your opinion on losing one game to Bama this season. A pretty good team.

A few comments:
Stafford was the MAN today when he needed to be the MAN the most—3rd down; Moreno is a Heisman candidate; ALL the WRs did a great job; the O line was solid; and Bobo called a solid game for the most part—but we have to figure out how to get Moreno the ball more and cut down on the 3rd and longs even more…
Thespecial teams must improve—punt returns, punt coverage, the actual kickoff, KO return & KO coverage must improve…UF will kill UGA on special teams if our guys don’t step it up in a hurry. This doesn’t seem to be a big priority for the Dawgs—and it should be…
Penalties—still a problem…I had George Foster humping Gator D lineman flashbacks with the OL penalty at the end of the game today…still too many yellow hankies flying around that are completely preventable.
And then there’s the defense—
First—thank sweet Moses for Gamble—ABSOLUTELY GREAT game. He could teach the DBs a bit about how to react to the QB and the ball in the air. I’m just concerned that if he gets a lot more playing time that the instincts and reaction he showed today will get coached out of him…hopefully the Dawgs will be able to add Ellerbee back into the mix next week. Curran was solid, and really did a great job in the 2nd half.
Never, never, never should it be a question if the Dawgs will win if the offense puts up 38 points…
The execution of corners and safeties was awful today and that weakness was exposed again by an SEC opponent (Alabama, UT, Vandy, and now LSU)…not only is the D hampered by CWMs passive zone schemes, but the Dawgs have returned to the Donnan & Goff era w/ poor tackling all game long—wrap ‘em up, DAWGS! I’m really beginning to question how well the defensive backfield is getting coached up…no excuse for the constant 5 play, 2 minute touchdown drives & big plays the Dawgs gave up after the offense did its job, especially after 38-17—no excuse at all. The LBs are solid, our D line is hurt (but still not productive enough)—but the Dawgs biggest question mark is what in the world is going on w/ DBs and safeties in CWMs scheme. That being said…
All in all a win in Red Stick is a GREAT win, and worth its weight in gold in style points alone. I wonder if the ESPN media will rave on Georgia hanging 52 on LSU at home the same way they raved on UFs blowout of LSU and on the Tide when they rolled the Dawgs in Athens. Somehow I doubt the Dawgs will jump 8 spots in the polls. Regardless, on to JAX for the whole ball of wax.

LSU was a weak and overrated team. You all are talking like you beat someone good. News flash: The only good team you’ve faced this year shut you out in the first half when you were more worried about the jerseys you were wearing than actually hitting your opponent.
Yes, I expect that your rank drops, you don’t belong in the top 10, just like LSU didn’t belong in the top 25. Who have you beat of any importance? Vandy? LOL.

Bull Dung,
I live outside the South and people I talk to WISH they had Stafford as a QB,that their team could finish in the top 10 five out of the last six years. in the state I live in, no college team in the state has EVER accomplished that.
Stafford has passed for more yards than anyone else in the SEC. In the past 12 months, no team has won more games than UGA. That is why UGA and Stafford get bragged on by the media.
