UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

The reason behind all these injuries

People have been asking me since this summer what I thought Florida coach Urban Meyer and the Gators were going to do to retaliate against Georgia for that silly little end zone celebration last year.

Now we know.

It took me a while to put two-and-two together but it’s obvious now. Clearly Meyer went deep down to Fort Lauderdale this summer and hired voodoo priestess Madam Simbi M’Arue — aka “Mama” — to put an injury curse on the Bulldogs this season. Mama, in case you haven’t heard, was purported in court proceedings this year to be have been utilized by Phyllis Tobias, the wife of Wall Street hot shot Seth Tobias. Mr. Tobias ended up, well, in his swimming pool not swimming. It was all over the Florida papers.

Seeing that, Meyer must’ve contacted Mama and directed her to put a spell on Georgia that would cause it to lose at least half its starters to injuries by the time the Dogs came down to Jacksonville for the big grudge match on the river next week. At the present rate the Bulldogs have been losing players, it would appear Mama has gotten it just about right.

By my count Georgia now has had 13 part-time or full-time starters miss games with injuries. The latest two, we found out Wednesday, came during Tuesday’s practice — tight end Aron White (shoulder) and linebacker Akeem Hebron (broken ankle). White, a one-time starter, is out at least one game. Hebron, a backup and special teams mainstay, is out for the season.

Once a third-stringer, White got his first career start two weeks ago because regular-starter Tripp Chandler (shoulder) and his backup Bruce Figgins (shoulder) were both injured. Not much question where Mama is sticking her pins on the tight ends.

Add White to the list that already included incumbent starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant (knee/season), his initial backup Kiante Tripp (ankle/two games), LT/LG Vince Vance (knee/season), DT Jeff Owens (knee/season), FB Brannan Southerland (foot/five games), LB Dannell Ellerbe (knee/three games), Figgins (shoulder/three games), DE Rod Battle (neck/four games), SE Kris Durham (two games/ankle), DE Jeremy Lomax (toe/one game) and DT Kade Weston (knee/three games). I may well have missed one or two.

The effect? On offense Georgia has started four different left tackles, three different left guards, two centers, three right guards, three right tackles, three tight ends and two fullbacks. The defense has been only slightly better: three left ends, three defensive tackles, three right ends, two middle linebackers and two strongside linebackers.

And this is before the Bulldogs venture into Tiger Stadium on Saturday. Last time I checked LSU plays pretty physical in there. So by the time the Dogs to get down to Jacksonville, well, Mama M’Arue’s — or should we say Urban Meyer’s? — work will be done.

Seriously though what’s with all the injuries?

Some cheese for your mouse:

I’m sure Bulldogs’ fans are going to love Rivals.com’s latest bowl predictions. They’ve got Florida in the BCS title game and Georgia in the Outback… . Hey, could happen… .

Stewey Mandel jumps into the debate on which conference is the best in college football this season and where Big 12 offenses are truly great or their defenses justy suck. In fairness, he explores whether SEC defenses are really good or their offenses just suck… .

Here comes LSU’s Ricky Jean-Francois… .

David Hale, who covers the Dogs for the Macon and Columbus papers, addresses on his blog the rumors swirling around [utility player Kiante Tripp].

And we are still thin at safety…

If this continues in the LB core (two season enders), we will run a lot more nickel.

I love our skill players on offense but we seem doomed up front.

When are we going to start seeing Harmon and other true freshman start to play? I know that CMR would like to redshirt Harmon and others, but we are running out of good impact players.

We need to get some of the young pups in there and get them some experience now instead of next year. We will reload with our great recruiting class in February, but now is here. Go Dogs!!

Chip, for what it’s worth…I saw an article from Matt Hayes at sportingnews.com on how UGA is the best 1-loss team. I thought this was interesting given our injury situation, red zone issues, and games coming up with LSU/UF…why would the Dawgs get any “love” now?

These injuries are freaky indeed…I mean didn’t we just hear that the team was going to take it easy in practice this week??? Breaking ankles isn’t what I would call taking it easy. I’m just hoping that Jean-Francois isn’t able to start or play many snaps this game…it’s already bad enough without him.

If the dawgs had all the players healed up for LSU and Florida it would fun to watch the tigers and gators get beat!! Maybe the voodoo curse came from Baton Rouge instead!! Good luck dawgs and you better get Dr. Andrews from Birmingham, AL ready for surgery in the next couple of weeks!!

Funny, but UF had more injuries than Uga has. 5 ,yes thats 5, players went down with ACLs to start the year. Then there is the starting WR, RB, OG, DT, and 2 starting LB that have missed games before the season’s half way over. Injuries are part of the game. Quit whinning and build some depth.

FRED, FLA did have a lot of ACL injuries, but they weren’t all starters. On the other hand, I guess that’s why FLA lost to a sub-.500 Ole Miss team.

Shoulder injuries seem as common as a spring-time allergies at UGA since Richt came. I never heard of any until he came. Now I think Richt is the greatest coach we have ever had, but he needs to look at his practice techniques or something. I can’t remember all the guys we have lost over time to shoulder injuries (I challange the readership to come up with them) but I know there have been a lot and is a big reason why we always have a young OL (we are forced to play them before they are ready and they get hurt and quit before they are uppeclassmen perpetuating the vicious circle). Trey Chandler (OL), Bartley Miller (OL), Josh Brock (OL), Zeb McKinzey (OL), Marcus Washington (LB), Darrell Holmes (DL), Ray Gant (DL) Others more recent - Tony Wilson (2006), Thomas Brown (2007), Tripp Chandler, Jeremy Lomax and now Aaron White.

October 23, 2008 8:59 AM | Link to this

Like most things this year involving Georgia football, the injury situation is probably getting blown out of proportion to some degree by the media. I remember in the preseason getting constant up to the minute updates from Chip Towers on every little boo boo by a Georgia player. If a guy stubbed a toe we would hear about it. Injuries happen. The Sturdivant injury was a big one, but did it really have the disasterous effects that the media predicted? Would we be 7-0 right now if he hadn’t gone down? No, probably not. I’d like to see the AJC compare this season to past seasons as far as injuries go. I bet this season isn’t anything too far out of the ordinary. If I am wrong and there is a striking difference then I will buy in to their doom and gloom outlook on the Dawgs.

And by the way haters, nobody is making excuses. First of all, we have nothing to make excuses about. We’re 6-1 and tied for first in the SEC East with the big bad paper Gators. I’ll take that any day of the week. Second, the injury situation is what it is. Losing guys to season ending injuries is not a good thing. This should be obvious to anyone with a brain. Merely stating the obvious is not making an excuse. I’ll tell you what’s an excuse. Crying about an excessive celebration penalty and blaming it for losing a game is a sad pathetic excuse. Good day.

Do you hear Pinkle whining to the press??? Real coaches don’t need gimmicks to win games. Everyone talks about Richt having class, I think he comes up with stupid gimmicks and celebrations to motivate his players!!! Take a page from Saban, Carroll, Tressell, IF YOU CAN’T MAKE THE PLAYS I WAN’T YOU TO MAKE, I WILL FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO PLAY YOUR POSITION!!!!!Preseason everyone was saying UGA was the most talented team in the conference, hence the PRESEASON #1 RANKING!! Chip, hate to tell you, but injuries aren’t the reason this team will get beat by LSU. UGA will lose to LSU because of it’s O.C. in training Mike BooBoo.He is the reason UGA is so terrible in the red zone. His play calling is so predictable, and we get stuffed over and over again in the red zone. You add that to Stafford’s dumb decisions in the red zone, and you have 4 int’s in the red zone the last 2 games.Richt is to blame for allowing this clown to call these terrible plays over and over again, but Richt and BooBoo have an excuse after LSU stuffs our offense in the red zone. They will both blame the young O.L. for all the problems. The line doesn’t call fade routes that Stafford can’t throw, and the line doesn’t throw 4 int’s right in the hands of d.l’s and d.b’s. And the line doesn’t run the backs up the middle when the defense has 8 or 9 men in the box. Give me a break, Richt and his boy BooBoo have been exposed by Vandy and Tenn., not to mention Bama, and they will get exposed again by LSU. It’s time to make a change with BooBoo, and if Richt doesn’t do it, then it’s time for him to go into the ministry, and allow UGA a chance to get a coach with some balls.

I’m not worried—even with all these injuries, UGA will beat LSU and Florida. Florida’s overrated. UGA’s defense will stuff tebow like last year, and Stafford will light up UF’s bad secondary for some big plays. Moreno—he’ll through that soft UF dline like a hot knife through butter. UGA 33 UF 19

No you didn’t just say that you never heard of any injuries till Mark Richt started coaching at Georgia. Tell me you didn’t seriously just say that!

And I have to agree with georgia fan. Make excuses for WHAT? What is anyone excusing? WHO is making any excuses? To NEED excuses, there needs to be something to be excused. Excuses for having a great year? Winning football games? High rankings? success?

Discussing injuries is making excuses for winning? Does that make any sense? You rivals must really not have anything better to worry about than to come in here and mock somebody for something that didnt happen.

The real story is Georgia is still playing very well even with all the injuries, which truly are beyond the norm. That speaks well of our depth, which is one of the main reasons we still have a decent shot at championships. Injuries are emerging on other teams too.

There is a lot of football to be played and we are in the most difficult stretch of the season. I have said all along it would be very tough for any team in college football to beat LSU in Baton Rouge and Florida back to back. We’ll see what happens.

In the FWIW category, the concensus of the pundits that I have seen about this weekend at LSU is that while thier D-line is not a good matchup for us, UGA should have a mismatch against thier passing defense, and Stafford could have a big day.

reebok, you’re right on regarding UGA’s talent/potential and lack of discipline. Many of these 4-5 star/bluechip recruits are sorely lacking discipline and inate intelligence. Whereas some lesser hyped recruits (ie - Pollack) become superstars.

In any event, I hate to admit it but the Dawgs will probably get trounced in one of the next 2 games. If LSU smashes us, then I think we’ll eek it out against UF. If we beat LSU, I think we’ll be tapped out & drop to the Gayturdz :-(. With the questionable red zone play calling, young/injured OL, lack of DE pressure & (very) limited blitzing from CWM, I don’t see how we’ll make it through the season without 1-2 more losses. However, I’m still pulling for my Dawgs 100% & hope they prove my hunch(es) wrong! GO DAWGS!!!

Let’s be honest people. There’s nothing to make an excuse about…yet. There is no way we will get through this season accomplishing what we want to accomplish with the injuries we’ve sustained. You don’t lose your AA offensive lineman playing the most important position and his backup without it affecting you.

Think I’m wrong? Anyone else think the loss of Jeff Owens (our most likely all-conference DT) has been/will be a little more signifigant than originally thought?

Fact is you now have young backups playing out of position across the O-line and you can’t get ANY push up front because of the loss of your best player on the defensive side of the ball. This has obviously altered the defense that WM would probably like to have run

You don’t lose your best two big men up front on both sides of the ball and not have it affect your season. The coaches are doing the best to adapt, but, by the end, this season will be chalked up to bad luck.

Nobody, but NOBODY whines and cries as much as Urban Myer—(and a few Gator fans on here pretty frequently). All we have heard about since last season is “The Celebration” and that Teebow was injured and less than 100% against the Dawgs…whaaaa! Give me a break, Georgia did that on the FIRST POSSESSION! The Gators had all game long to “pay back” the Dawgs for that irritation. I don’t see many Dawg fans making excuses here! UGA has had it’s share of injuries and that’s part of the game: ‘nuf said.

Speaking of injuries, Bama make sure your boys destroy UT this week because if they don’t we don’t want to hear crying over “Mount Cody” being out!

Does anyone remember 1993, 1994? Not so much the year but the huge injuries we had. Goff had just come off his breakthrough 10-2 season. Zeier and a bunch of skill folks around him. I remember before the season started we had already lost most of the starting D-line, and along the season several more, all over the place, playing with the third string most of the year in some spots. They actually hung in there…… for about 3 quarters. Finished 5-6.

Every week it’s the same old song and dance. The uGAY homers get on this blog and talk smack, “breakout game”, 33-19, the opponent is weak, lame, blah blah blah….

Then the same homers come back after the mutts manage to eek out a win (props on that) and t**’s, a win is a win, this was a good team, we came back in the 2nd half and ALMOST won, the refs didn’t call the penalty, the ref called a bad penalty, blah blah blah….

Face it you haven’t beat anyone by more than 10 points that was worth sh!t. The only “breakout” you have mustard was against 2nd rate programs and Div 1AA teams.

If LSU or Florida has a decent game against the mutts you’re in trouble. They will score at least 35 on your defense and your offence has been less than impressive.

I don’t give a sh!t for any SEC team, but at least the Tide, Gator, and Tiger players and fans are respectful of their opponents; not like the uGAY goober fans, and players voted most likely to be convicted of a felony.

Georgia fan, you have go to be kidding…blown out of proportion??? How many key linemen, and other starters for that matter, have gone down this year? The UGA injuries have made national headlines all season long. It’s not being blown out of proportion. If Sturdivant, Owens, Ellerbe, and Southerland had played in the UA game…you really don’t know what would have happened, but I’m sure it wouldn’t have been a blowout in the first half. In fact, losing Ellerbe in the first few plays of that game was a fatal blow imo.

Having said that…the coaching staff and team have never whined about the injury problem. Give credit to the 2nd/3rd stringers for filling in and playing their behinds off and having the team in great position going into the most crucial part of the season.

The injuries are huge for the bulldogs, especiallybeing that they are to some critical players. Imagine having Trenton on that offesive line and Kade on the defensive line. We do have dept, but when those players are in the game who will play behind them. I give georgia a chance against LSU because LSU’s offense is not an explosive unit and their defense as vaunted as people say they are, Mississippi State scored 24 or some odd points on them. The game will unfortunately come down to play calling in the red zone and I am waiting on Mike Bobo to call a good game where he utilizes his offensive weapons. I think the defense will play well because they are strong at what LSU likes to do, run the football. It will be interesting. Also the game is not at night!!!!!! We can get the win,,,, Go Dawgs!!!!

Injuries are part of the game! That’s why we call it a team.If any team doesn’t have enough reserves to take the place of starters, then there’s trouble. We can still win the SEC, but a NC seems out of the question.Play e’m one at a time! We have a better record than we had this time last year and, when we put together two halves, who knows how good we can be.Stop all the speculation, second guessing and complaining. As I said a few games back,Bobo didn’t throw the interceptions.Willie Martinez didn’t let the opponents throw perfect “fade” patterns in the TN.and Vandy games. As for Bama,we weren’t ready to play. That’s everybody from CMR to the water girl.Look what happened to LSU against FL.We can win if everybody will stay on the bandwagon and let this team, including the coaches, know we are the “DAWG” nation and we win and lose together.Oh yeah!Do any of you remember the Ray goff era?Tee it up and shut up!!!!

saint nick- “Everyone talks about Richt having class, I think he comes up with stupid gimmicks and celebrations to motivate his players!!! Take a page from Saban, Carroll, Tressell,”……Yes Saint Nick Richt should take a page from those guys. SABAN really motivated his players to beat Louisiana-Monroe, CARROLL really motivates his team against the likes of Stanford and Oregon State and TRESSELL has done a great job motivating his team in the last 2 National Championship games.

Hmm, what is the difference Between Saban, Carroll, and Tressell. What could they teach the Georgia coach? Hmm, O’ right THEY WON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Yes Richt could learn a thing or 100 from these coaches, you moron.

“Do you realize your defense gave up 24 pts at home to MSU and 44 pts to UF? LSU fans are a bit disillusioned to make such bold statements after shutting down that powerhouse in Columbia, SC. So here is one for you…LSU secondary meet Mr. Green.”

Wow and ya’ll have been the so dominant on both sides of the ball. did you forget that you let a sh!tty UT hang in the game? oh and by the way that was a real blowout UGAy had of SCAR in Columbia also.

Didn’t yall give up 21 pts to GA Southern in the first game of the year? didn’t yall give up 41 pts to Bama? Please we can go back and forth.

Yeah I am confident in my team. other than one blowout win by a better UF team we have had the same season as UGAy.

purple and gold, you are spot on.

Our defense and offense have played down to our competition all year!

Great point, your onto something, is it SEC offence are weak; or that the only real defense uGAY has face is Bama. I think I’ll go with the latter, Florida looked pretty good last week, and Bama beat uGAY like a cheap w*******.

When are the SEC and Big 12 going to learn to play defense?

I think Saint Mary’s High School could score 14 against Georgia. Ole Miss scores 21 against LSU, He!! they beat Florida.

You can say what you want about the other conferences at least they can hold a team to 1 touchdown or even shut them down.

HeII Southern California is on a 138-0 steak. That game against Oregon State is the only time a team has score more than 10.

At the end of the day defense still wins championships, you have to be able to stop a team when it counts.

Plus we are talking 3 shoulder injuries over a 7 yr span?

If Ole Miss beat florida, didn’t they have to play pretty good defense to do that?

St Mary’s HS might score 14 on Georgia, but Oregon State damn sure couldn’t.

Nobody in the SEC is going to win 69-0 against a conference opponent because their DEFENSE is much better than that crap you play against. By comparing the scores of the SEC games you are further proving the argument of the strength of conference!

You think St. Mary’s High Schoool could score 14 on UGA? I think St. Mary’s could put up 69 against Washington St.!! Hell Bugs Bunny playing by himself could hang 69 on Wash St.!

Nobody has made excuses for injuries except the pinheads from Tech and Florida on this blog. CMR hasn’t, Chip Towers hasn’t, I’m not nor is any other Dawg fan. Injuries happen and we deal with them. Thankfully we have the depth to do so. I remember times when we didn’t.

We’re 6-1! Apparently injuries have haven’t been an issue for Georgia and nor will they this week in Baton Rouge or next week for the Florida game. Great teams (and this is one) adjust/adapt to adversity.

Is it just me? I’m not sweating either of these games. We will win them both. Hard fought but they like the others will be in the win column,

Tech Nerds,

Yes you StinkyDoc & CMR Poser…..call all your friends (maybe you could get a couple between yourselves) and get over there and buy some tickets….the trade school needs you…..with such a rich tradition and many, many national championships from now defunct polls it comes as a great surprise any tickets would be available in a metroplis of 6 million people. Pleae do tell why you can not fill a stadium. I am going to go out on a limb and venture to guess it is because no one cares for your type. I could be wrong and price could be a factor. I mean $40 must be very expensive living on a management degree from Yech. Just think you could have gone into engineering but then you would have to move back to Near East or Far East. Perhaps this is why you can not fill the stadium….all alumni with the ability to buy tickets moved back home. Save those pennies…..management degree will pay off one day.

To my fellow Dawgs,

I keep telling you to calm down and to not worry but it seems to be falling on deaf ears. The Dawgs will be fine as even with all of these injuries they have steadily improved. I know we have left points on the field all season but we have dominated on the line of scrimmage in every game but Alabama and they held their own in the second half when we cut down on the mental lapses. IMHO this team is going to beat LSU this Saturday and a lot of the Haters will still be this blog talking their trash and trying to inflame things. So don’t worry about things you have no control over and remember to pull for the Dawgs.

Go Dawgs

My coworkers agree on this one point about our dawgs……yes….we are winning…..but we are NOT playing with passion, and I just don’t know why. When I watched the Mark Richt show, he was tryin to fire them up over the win….and I just didn’t see a team that gave a f’ck about the win they just got. I don’t know guys, but if we keep playing with this lackluster attitude, we’re gonna get the sh!t kicked outta us, and it may just start with this Saturday.

A few comments from my 25th floor office overlooking Atlanta:

1.) I’m not a DAWG fan, but give them a break! Stafford has a golden arm, he can play at 50 percent and they’ll still win the SEC this year. Knowshon is the best RB and he barely has to run in the SEC! So everyone ease up!

2.) I’m voting for that Irish Catholic from Chicago…BROCK O’BAMA. And what’s with his sidekick Money girl….OPRAH?? I think all the Republicans and McCain/Palin supporters should BOYCOTT that FAT SLOB’S SHOW

By T'ville Dawg

I agree with Big Dawg. I see nothing special about LSU this year. I’m still waiting for the “breakout game” and maybe this is it. The DAWGS do well on the road and has had good success against LSU in the past.

The Gators beat them down pretty bad and they also struggled against SC. I think the LSU defensive front will be formidable but manageable. It’s hard to believe that Stafford will be unable to get a few passes off against this team.. If AJ is covered up, then MoMass or Chapas or Southerland can certainly catch the ball. I can’t believe Moreno will be neutralized.

The national news media gives the DAWGS no love or respect. DAWGS, let’s just take the briefcase to the office and put in a good workday.

LSU is a very good team, but they can be had. Also, I wouldn’t be boasting a lot about a French heritage these days.

Predicting a Dawg win. but have no idea what points will be. According to ESPN and DR. Lou on thursday night LSU defense is so powerful Mark May says that LSU will use 4 defensive ends on defense instead of linemen. Dr. Lou picked the Dawgs while Mark May picked LSU. According to the media Ricky Jean Fran however you spell it is back after being injured and is supposed to tackle everybody, including Running backs coach Tony Ball. who knows. I still think Dawgs pull out a close one. Maybe Ricky Jean will tackle the Ref that always calls that phantom pass interference call on Asher Allen.
