UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Dogs deal with BCS, LSU, DUI
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There’s a lot to get to regarding Georgia football this week, what with the first BCS standings coming out, that little trip to Baton Rouge on Saturday and the unexpected disciplinary news early Sunday morning. So I’m just going to kind of clear it all out at once based on our Sunday night teleconference call with Coach Mark Richt. Then we’ll have a nice clean slate with which to dive into the rest of the week.
Sound all right? OK. Here’s your Monday Morning Ten to go with your morning coffee:
(1) I would assume foremost on most Bulldogs’ minds is the DUI arrest of defensive tackle Brandon Wood in the wee hours Sunday morning. According to CMR, Wood had been parked in his car on the edge of downtown Athens waiting to pickup his girlfriend and another friend to take them home. He had his parking lights on as he waited and forgot to turn on his headlights as they drove back to East Campus Village dormitory. UGA police pulled over Wood for driving without headlights. Wood, who is 21, was determined to have alcohol in his system and was arrested for DUI. (Note: It was UGA police and the report wasn’t available Sunday. We’ll get it sometime Monday.)
Meanwhile injured offensive lineman Vince Vance also was arrested but for an incredibly minor offense. He allegedly had an expired driver’s license (his birthday was the 11th and he didn’t have it renewed, CMR said). Apparently state law recently changed where that’s an now an arresting offense. If that’s all it is I hate to even bring it up.
Anyway, for those keeping count that’s 10 football players arrested in 2008. To be fair, three had charges dropped or dismissed and one had a DUI charge reduced to reckless driving. Three players were dismissed from the team.
CMR seemed more disappointed than outraged over this latest setback. He was asked if there was anything he could do to prevent such incidents. “I don’t think I can. It’s individuals that are making decisions. When they make a mistake we discipline them and we educate them. It wasn’t like he wasn’t aware. He knew the deal and he made a bad judgment.”
Wood, a 6-1, 290-pound redshirt sophomore from Buchanan, was playing a lot as part of a four-man rotation at the two interior tackle spots. CMR said Wood will miss at least the LSU game. It didn’t sound like it’d be much beyond that. CMR reminded reporters that athletic association policy dictated an automatic one-game suspension.
(2) The good news for the Dogs is junior DT Kade Weston is back. He was available but didn’t play against Vandy due to a sore knee that forced him out of some games earlier this season. CMR said Kade is OK and will definitely be ready Saturday… .
(3) LB Dannell Ellerbe (knee), TE Tripp Chandler (shoulder) and WR Kris Durham (ankle) all have a “good chance” of playing against LSU, CMR said.
(4) Dogs are glad LSU game was set for 3:30 EST rather than 7:45. “Mainly so we could get home at a decent hour and get a decent night’s sleep,” CMR said. Never mind that you NEVER want to play the Tigers at night in Death Valley.
(5) CMR on the Dogs’ No. 7 ranking in the BCS (which was actually better than most projections I saw): “Seven games in I think it’s good that we’re ranked in the top 10. But as we all know there’s so much more to be played. And I don’t know how meaningful it is right now. We’re really just concentrating on the LSU game, period. We’re trying to go 7-1. We’re just trying to keep ourselves in good shape in the SEC East.”
(6) CMR is concerned about the matchup with LSU’s D-line, pointing out that the Tigers start three seniors and a junior and back them up with two seniors, a junior and a sophomore. “Their youngest matches our oldest,” he quipped.
(7) CMR said he’d taper down contact in practices the next few weeks because they’re so thin. “We have to make sure we get to the game without losing anybody else. This is about the time you have to be real careful.” Understandable since Georgia has had 10 different players miss games with injuries.
(8) Asked why no tight ends have caught passes in the last few weeks, CMR said it was a byproduct of pass protection and injuries. Chandler’s out and Bruce Figgins (shoulder) is playing hurt. But mainly they’re using seven-man protections by keeping in a TE and a back and just throwing to three wideouts. He noted that the OL is doing well and there have been no sacks the last two games.
(9) Asked why so many toss sweeps lately, CMR said “we block it well” and noted that Knowshon Moreno runs them well. “It allows Knowshon to really stretch things and all the sudden there’s a vertical seam. He’s just good at putting his foot in the ground and knowing when to crease it.”
(10) CMR acknowledged sophomore CB Vance Cuff played a lot in the second half for junior Bryan Evans and could play more going forward. So could freshman Brandon Boykin. “Coach Martinez has been wanting to play Cuff more and Boykin more because they are high-energy guys and have ability. Games get so tight sometimes you don’t get as many guys in as you’d like. But to say [Cuff is] going to be a mainstay would be premature.”
So there ya go, 10 quick hits. Hit back all y’all want.

Another UGA arrest! CMR is too good of a man to keep leeting these kinds of things happen. This is a program out of control. What did you say, Chip? Was that 10 arrested so far this year? This continues to show an undisciplined attitude: off the field arrests, and on the field penalties. UGA does not have a divine right to wins. They have to earn them, and that only comes with discipline and hard work.

First, Wood’s DUI sucks. Even if he wasn’t “drunk”, the first rule of drinking is DON”T DRIVE. Just plain dumb…
Secondly, the BCS surprised me and I’m sure UF is even more motivated now for Jax….great….
Third, LSU’s D-line is dominant. What did UF do to neutralize it? I say, watch that game film and duplicate it. Worked out pretty well for them.
Last….can anyone give me more than “he just got toasted” on why B Evans seems to be getting beat on deeper routes? Besides that dropped interception, did Cuff play much or do anything of note? Any insights on Cuff or Boykin?

Also…anyone else see that ridiculous crack-back block that MoMass laid on the Vandy LB on the toss sweep to Knowshon? I’ve noticed the WR’s laying the wood to LB’s on these sweeps…and I’m loving it!!! As a former high-school WR, there was nothing better than head-hunting for a unaware LB and hitting him right in the ear-hole!!! Now THAT’S FOOTBALL!

I believe Richt is right to be concerned about our matchup with their defensive line. The injury situation has turned the youngest line in the SEC into the weak link on the team. I believe they are playing as well as can be expected based on their experience level but they are a weak link none the less

I have a feeling this week will be the “breakout” game. Lots of people returning from injuries ready to hit someone… Besides, we play better on the road anyway.

I honestly believe that CMR does not get it dad gum it and shucks!. Look where he came from…the Florida State Criminals….The Bulldog program closely mirrors it! Lots of arrests off the field, lots of penalties on the field, but winning football. Is that not what we the bulldog nation want? Or do we want good clean cut kids and Jim Donnan 9 and 4 seasons? CMR see nothing wrong, so leave him alone dod gum it!

The next two games will be won or lost in the trenches. The Dawgs don’t necessarily have to win the battle in the trenches but they have to at least get a draw. It is clear that we do not have shut down corners so pressure on the QB is a must the next two weeks. We can get away with a heavy dose of blitz packages at LSU but not in Jax. If we have to blitz Tebow to get pressure it will be a long day on Jax!

LSU’s defense is ranked 9th in the SEC. A place they are not use to being, but I am sure that Florida game has a lot to do with that. They also sustained a miriad of injuries Saturday night. Not to mention Ricky Jean-Francois has a groin injury which is extremely nagging. UGA just needs to worry about scoring points. If we can get LSU down by 10-14 points early, it is hard for them to play from behind with their qb situation. UGA has got to get it together in the red zone though.

I don’t know why everyone is so afraid of LSU. Don’t get me wrong, they are a good team and probably have the edge in this game since they are at home. But some folks are acting like they are some unstoppable juggernaut. Their defense got absolutely shredded by Florida. They have serious quarterback issues. This is one of the weaker LSU squads I’ve seen in awhile. Their defensive line against our O-line is an obvious concern. However, we’re pretty good on D too and LSU has had trouble when they can’t run the ball. We are very good at stopping the run. This is a good matchup for our defense. Bottom line is we are very capable of winning this game. Have some faith people.

But I must say Chip, you’re a better sportswriter than you are a runner. Keep up that good UGA reporting……one year (not this one) those Dawgs will actually make everyone happy…..Richt must learn how to recruit quality students as players, not just good, average athletes who like to carouse around and get in trouble.

Congratulations on the hard fought, tough victory against the once-first-place Vanderbilt.
You fleabags should be proud. You didn’t even need a miracle to pull this one out.
I see where Noshow Moreno made a guest appearance this year. He must had thought the AJC (the only publication with him on it) might drop him off the Hiesman list.
I think the mutts are back with this “Breakout win”
After that gauntlet of GSU, ASU, Central Mich. Tenn. & Vandy, it’s time for a break.

CMR should be concerned with LSU because of his OC inept play calling. We are the most under achieving team in college football. Willie Vanillie needs to shore up the pass coverage or its gonna be a disappointing game for Dawg nation. Its gonna be a ho hum game of coulda shoulda woulda.

Hey “Ramble On!!!” — Great 10-7 win over Gardner-Webb. Check their schedule — they were beaten better by Tenn. Tech and Sam Houston State (ha). They also lost to Charleston Southern by the same margin as against GT.
I am glad to see GT fans feel as though they can talk about #7 UGA.
Oh, and if you want to comment on a weak schedule so far, who the HECK have you played??? Gardner-Webb and Jacksonville State!?!

Mark “The Butt Cut” Richt needs to stop spending his time attempting to get his player’s highlights on SPORTSCENTER’S TOP TEN PLAYS….he needs to start trying to get his players to stop drinking and driving and turn their HEADLIGHTS on.
I wonder when their situation with all the DUI’s etc…will truly be addressed?
Its only a matter of time before someone gets killed under Richt’s ThugU program.
He did graduate from Miami, afterall. Way to go coach!

(10) I do not understand why we continue to play Bryan Evans. He has been getting beat for three years straight and yet we continue to play him. He is the worst cover DB to play at Georgia in 15 yrs.
Every team’s game plan should include throwing to his side.

Wes you don’t get it! CMR is not going to suspend a player against the gayturds, if he’s not forced to by whatever silly school policy. There is a reason you hire a coach from FSU and Mimai. Cracking down and parting and grades does not win games this year or help recruiting ever. 25 years from now nobody will say they were good, smart kids, but they will remember the DAWGS 2008 National Championship. Vandy and Duke can worry about that stuff AND LOSE! Just win baby!

What about the great job that Searles has done… actually both sides of the line, offense and defense has done a great job to hold its own through the season thus far, considering the injuries and problems.
The trenches affect nearly every part of the game, the injuries we have suffered could have very well done us in as far as having any hope for winning even the SEC East, much less anything more than that.
I think the team has adapted well to be able to hang in there thus far, and the real test will be the next couple of weeks. The Bama game certainly taught us that we have to change our gameplan when we are so outmatched up front. Game film from Ore. St. and USC might do us some good to see how Ore St used USC’s aggresive, and dominant D-line to an advantage instead of a detriment.
Kudos to Coach Searles and his ability to patch together something to keep us in the hunt, and also to Coach Bobo for realizing that he has to adapt a gameplan that takes into consideration that we don’t have a dominant line to let him run just any play he wants. A lot of teams would have lost several games given the same circumstances, so I applaud the whole gang for the job they have done so far this year.

Headed to Baton Rouge for the first time this weekend. I am hoping for a win so all the bulldog faithful (including myself) can’t put the negative stuff to bed and get back to recognizing the positives.
Until then…
The entire world knows that Evans is weak on the cover. Early in the year he just committed pass interference to keep the opponent from cathcing the ball. Now that we don’t won’t penalties, he is getting beat. I am just glad that LSU QBs aren’t the greatest although neither is JPW and we made him look good.

I think its time for the coaches to start to get these young men focused in playing football. I think also that their is too much sensationalism being put up on the jumbo tron score board with silly player videos pumping up their biceps. I was really disappointed that how rude it was for rap music being played over the loud speakers at the same time when group of our senior cheerleaders were trying to cheer and put on their refreshing cheering act for homecoming. The next thing will happen is we will have some halftime show like the Superbowl with someones bra being ripped open aka Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. We have players dancing on the sidelines and not having their heads in the game too. UGA and CMR needs to bring back focus, channel proper enthusiasm and bring back some dignity to the game experience.Dawgs need to man up ,be focused and be responsible. GO DAWGS!!

Chip, how big of an impact do you think Chandler and Durham’s return will have on our offense’s production?? When Chandler was healthy, we were actually throwing to him so that seems to add a threat we have not seen in a few games. Also, with Durham back, that adds a 3rd reliable option in our receiving corps. What are your thoughts?? It seems to be like the players returning from injuries are guys that can have a big impact on our team’s performance.

You know, whatever happened to mandatory curfews, sacrifice and putting the team first. It’s one thing to cut up before the season, but after the season starts and certainly before the meat of your schedule, to have a guy out in the “wee hours of the morning”, drinking at any level and not at home sleeping and resting - this guy should be kicked off the team. There is no room for this at this point in the season. There is no more McWhorter Atletic dorms, so no way the coaches can really monitor. The only way to keep control is stiff penalties. Kick him off, set an example. We will be better in the long run.

P44 Haynes: Actually it was the UGA police… .
bpdawg: Honestly I don’t think the return of Chandler and/or Durham will have much of an impact on the offense. Dogs averaged about 450 yards in the two games they missed. But, like they say, more is better… .
OldTymeDawg: Actually the banning of athletic dorms had nothing to do with Jan Kemp. It was a mandatory rule passed by the NCAA for ALL schools D-I and otherwise… .
DawgFud: The Bryan Evans thing, I can only assume he out-performs the others in practice. He is one of the fastest players on the team. Obviously he has a problem locating the ball and using that speed to his advantage… . But, like I said above, Vance Cuff played a lot in the second half and will probably player more from here on.

It would be interesting to see the lawyer fees paid to make the cases mentioned above go away. Richt had his lawyers at the hospital where his players ran amok even before the police arrived. Who is playing for this legal representation and the fines involved (in Ellerbe’s case, $15,000+?)

I actually feel good about the game sat for several reasons: 1. The game is being played at 330 on CBS, no one wins against LSU at night in baton rouge. 2. Their quarterbacks are nuthing to be scared of, if you play solid keep the running backs contained you ave a good chance. 3. LSU has great talent at the corner position, but they are very young. If and this is a big if, Stafford is accurate, he shold have a big day. I hope they throw more to the tight end and back underneath. I know they will throw some screen passes to offsset the LSU pass rush.
Now all of those points are contingent upon BOBO calling a smart, but aggressive game and Martinez blitzing the inexperienced quarterbacks. If Georgia plays with excitment and like they are on a mission, I thin their chances are good to win the game.

Hey DD, It is not like UGA has played anyone this year, except Alabama and looked what happened there—41-30 and it was not even that close with most UGA points coming after UAL pulled their starters. Let’s see, Ga Sou, AZ State and Central Mich. Now those are some “powerhouses”!

you said…”it would be nice if the AJC also displayed the articles where for instance Lomax’s charges were dropped as well as how oling’s case was resolved”…
I’m sure the AD and University is very happy that these cases just disappeared.
Reduced charges, dismissals, etc, often are the result of undue influence.
It is common for local police departments to find they made “procedural errors” when the arrest of local athletes are involved. Not guilty doesn’t mean innocent.
Like an earlier post said, these athletes are grown men; they need to be held accountable.

Its common knowledge that USC and Sam Cunningham did more to integrate the South in a 60 minute game against Bama in Sept. 1970, than had been done in the previous 20 years.

Yes, we are a sloppy team and that extends off the field as well. It is also true where there is smoke there is typically fire.
At the risk of being labeled an apologist for what many of you apparently think is the most lawless football program this side of Switzer’s Sooners, there do seem to be a lot of arrests in Athens for incredibly minor offenses and for offenses that are later dismissed or reduced once the facts come out.
A bit of perspective please on Vance’s arrest. Good god people, he was hauled in for an expired license - not a suspended license. He simply forgot it expired this year. Knowing how perfect you sanctimonious gasbags are I can truly understand the taunting and moral outrage.
Regarding Woods, he is of age and is therefore able to have alcohol in his system and drive–Yes, look it up! I’ve seen nothing re his BAC though, so maybe we should wait until the facts surface before we disband the football program and fire CMR. The track-record of over-reaching by the campus police calls for a bit of reasonable circumspection.
I am eternally thankful that when I was in college, my every transgression wasn’t published from coast-to-coast and you moral absolutists didn’t sit in judgment.

I’ve never really bought into the idea that there was a media bias against Ga. until this year; I’ve never really thought the refs singled out Ga until this year. I guess I just couldn’t see why they would. What has the program done to warrant such treatment? Despite what people like to claim, Dooley, Goff, Donnan(well I’m stretching that one) and certainly Richt ran or run good programs. I mean come on, we’re undefeated against the Buckeyes, and they’re the media darlings. But now I have figured out why this bias exists.
It is the moronic fans that run your mouths and pretend to be experts when you really know nothing about football other than what you heard on a 30 sec spot on College Game Day
Voice your opinions if you want, I admit I was frustrated after the past 4 games. I don’t have to see the Dawgs beat every team by 60 pts, but I would like to see it every once and a while. I’m tired of being on pins an needles against supposedly inferior teams in the 4th qtr when we should have obviously put the game away in the 1st, just like you guys. But remember this: This is the best Georgia Fotball Team we are gonna have this year. So lets get behind these players and these coaches and cheer this team on. As far as play calling goes, do not pass judgement on it until after this game. If the status quo continues then by all means complain. But can you really tell me what Ga’s trends are halfway through the season? Can LSU? At this point last year could you define our trends? Nope! That has served us well the past 3 yrs. Maybe this is coincidence. We will find out Sat. These dawgs may fail to put a complete game together this year or they might win all the remaining games. Either way I’ll be supporting each and every one of them Go Dawgs

You are soooo wrong my my friend. You DO NOT have to read anything in the AJC about UGA football. By the way, read slowly and give your obviously limited intellectual skills a chance to comprehend!
The AJC is the most recognized and widely read neswpaper in THE largest city, and THE state capital of THE state of Georgia. Atlanta is also located in THE state of Georgia. Georgia is THE home of THE University of Georgia. Now i know that is an awful lot for you to try to digest and understand in one sitting…please give it your best shot!
In the meantime, if you are one of those native Alabamians who chose to come to Georgia in order to pursue opportunities not available in Alabama(that I can certainly understand) then kedep your rather juvenile opinions to yourself. IF that fails then I have one last suggestion for you…..I-20 west!!!

As a life-long LSU fan, I have to admit that it’s confusing to see so many negative comments coming, allegedly, from UGA fans about their OWN TEAM! Must be some Tech, Tennessee, Gator fans, etc. posing as Dawg fans on here. If not, how do some of you people call yourselves fans? Believe me, there are plenty of teams in the country that would love to have Coach Richt. Yet many of you apparently have nothing but contempt for him. Strange.
As for this weekend’s game, LSU has yet to play a completely dominant 60 minutes. Against ANYONE. UGA has had some very dominant stretches, but like LSU, laid an egg against the best team it’s played to this point. If Georgia plays their best, they win, even if the Tigers play their best. (Your best is better than our best, I believe). If, however, LSU finally plays well in all phases FOR THE ENTIRE GAME, and the crowd gets into Stafford’s head, they will be hard to beat. UGA’s first-half performance against the Tide reminds me a lot of LSU’s sorry performance against the Gators, so if they both play that way, it’s really anybody’s game, and will not help the SEC’s slipping reputation. Sad but true fact: The Big 12 is, top to bottom, currently superior to the SEC’s product.
This LSU team should not be confused with the one that won the title last year. Different personality, different player leadership, and no larger-than-life characters like Glenn Dorsey and Jacob Hester. They’re ripe for the pluckin’ if you guys bring your A-game.
I try to be objective about my team, but some of you people are downright mean-spirited toward the team you supposedly love. Hard to figure.

Hey DD, I didn’t make an argument that UGA’s schedule is tougher than Tech’s, so it is interesting how defensive you are about it. Given how great the “Bulldog Nation” thinks the team is, I would certainly hope it is a tougher schedule. Maybe scheduling 3 more real teams would even make it better. And yes, true Tech fans are for Tech and anyone who plays UGA simply because UGA fans, are so obnoxious, ill-behaved and the majority of them never even went to UGA. Did it ever occur to you why all the boiled peanut salesmen in the mountains wear UGA caps? Are you a boiled peanut salesman? As a reminder, the little school you so hate on North Ave, has 5 National Championships (all in football) to UGA’s 2, and Tech’s last one came 10 yrs after UGA’s last. Granted, Tech has not been as hot as UGA has been in the last 15 yrs or so, but Tech’s football history and tradition far outweighs that of UGA. And Tech does it with a fraction of the student population of UGA.

I have been seeing the statement “the dawgs caught a break not to be playing LSU at night” ever since the game time was announced. I don’t think that’s a big deal. I mean LSU is definatley tough at night, but they are not invincible at night any more than Georgia was invincible in the black jerseys. The last time the dawgs played LSU in Baton Rouge at night we won (1998), the last time we played in Baton Rouge during the daytime we lost (2003). LSU is tough whenever you play them but don’t buy the “hype” about night games down there.

Unfortunately our colleges and universities have become breeding grounds for immoral activities. They even rate schools today by how well they party.Good kids go off to school and get sucked in by peer pressure to do what they wouldn’t ordinarily do on their own. Every weekend is spring break at college. Athletes are handed scholarships worth tens of thousands of dollars, they should be held accountable for their actions! Toe the line or go home and lose your scholarship.

1- Why should this arrest be foremost on the coaches minds? There are almost a hundred other Bulldogs that didn’t get arrested and LSU is coming up. The guys that have worked hard all year should be foremost in the coaches minds, not one player that made a stupid move. Wood made the decision and has to suffer for it, Kade is coiming back so sit Wood down for a while and run the hell out of him in practice. 3- Getting these guys back should really help, though the back ups have done a good job. 4- This doesn’t matter, they are still LSU and still at home. Those Cajuns will drink so much wine that they won’t know if it’s night or day. 5- All that matters is beating LSU. 6- Everybody is worried about LSU’s line. I think UGA needs to get the ball out of Stafford’s hands quicker. I might go no huddle against these guys. 7- ‘Bout time! 8- DUH- Chandler is out and Figgins ain’t a sprinter when He’s healthy. I would like to see them use Arron White’s speed on some deep routes, maybe the staff is working on that. 9- Knowshon is a better runner in space than between the tackles. He has excellent lateral speed and a spin move that unbelievable. The toss sweep gives him a chance to find a seam and get one on one with a DB or LB. 10- Evans has been picked on by every QB that UGA has played and Cuff has shown a lot of promise. Maybe it was time for a change. The two Interference penalties against him led to Vandy’s first TD. Though the first penalty was bogus.

I assume you meant your comment a bit sarcastically, but you are right. I am just lucky I am not “too dead” yet. However, UGA does not discuss much of anything pre-Dooley/1980, (exception for 1942 where most UGA fans are “too dead” to talk about it now). And speaking of history, it is too bad that Knowshon may be nominated for, and possibly win, the highest trophy awarded in college footgall which is named after a former Tech coach. As for LSU, I was there for the LSU/MS State game—UGA better bring its A++ game to BR. UGA fans have nothing on LSU fans. They start tailgating at dawn and that stadium rocks.

It’s my duty to do both. I scoffed about a guy going to jail for a driver’s license offense but that’s all… .
Gman: I spoke to UGA Plice Chief Jimmy Williamson today and he said Wood was compliant, agreed to field sobriety and breathalyzer tests and blew a .11. “Standard” case of DUI, he said… . Also, on Vance, Williamson said he had only a learner’s permit and it was expired by almost a year. Didn’t cite him for expired tag and running a red light… .

31-0 at the Half??!!!
LSU wins because this game will be determined at the line of scrimage.
Yes, UGA is better in skill position - but LSU is better on the D-Line, O-Line and D- Secondary. And that’s where games are won!!!
UGA’s O-Line does not match it’s skill position. TOO BAD that Stafford, Moreno and company do not have a senior/junior laden O-Line. If they did, UGA would be in a better position to make a run at SEC East, etc.
Also - your D-Line is a bit underachieving - still can not get any real pressure on QB’s. Look for LSU to take 3 step drops - and occaisionally pop you with a 5 step drop.
LSU is much better - and will win by at leat 13 points.

I checked the UGA blog to get a since of how the BCS rankings were being received. It seems that one of your players getting a DUI is the big story.
Players are only human, they make mistakes. It appears he is of legal age and was a few ticks over the limit, not a federal case. It happens on every campus. The coach should follow whatever policy he has in place, no more no less. This is not a big deal.
What about Ohio State being ranked #5 by the computer? Can you believe that?

People need to get over it that college kids and young adults are drinking at EVERY single campus. Athens is probably the strictest of them all and that’s why you hear more and more of it happening there than at most others. I’d be willing to bet that the local PD’s at these idiot’s favorite schools that criticize UGA’s are letting their players off the hook because they don’t want them to miss any games. Athens will ticket you for looking at them wrong. It’s rediculous. Now DUI is no laughing matter, but most of the arrests this year are a joke. So get over it and talk about football.

I am a Georgia POST certified officer in Georgia. There are a few reasons that the officer could have arrested anyone for driving without a license. If he was unable to prove his identity, a law enforcement officer will arrest e offender because he has no other choice. I do not believe he just didn’t have his license on him, he most likely didn’t have a license at all.

I was looking for some familiar, sane dawgs blogging here. Then it hit me… they are out earning a living and won’t be on until later. I’m retired. What do the rest of you do when you aren’t on a UGA blog? Some of you are definitely still in high school and I’m getting suspicious that others couldn’t finish.
THIS IS A DIFFERENT TEAM, folks. Some of you give a glimmer of hope that you had finally absorbed this most important point.
Everlasting Dawg- Good blog. Stay on here if you can.
abear 35- You are correct in assuming that this blog gets hijacked by other school’s fans(?) who try to shove little needles into fans of a great football program. You are definitely not one of them and it’s good to see a knowledgeable and analytical fan on here. Nice moniker Heber(t), but some of these kids on here don’t have a clue. I personally would like to hear more from you this week and after the game. If BCS Slave and BuLLDawg get on here later , you will hear good insightful remarks about the Dawgs.
Auburn usually plays us like a mirror image, but this year it may be LSU. We may have an advantage with a good and experienced qb, but Les Miles seems to put more bite in inexperienced qbs than anyone. Every team awaits to see if they are playing well enough against LSU that will elicit a good trick play. Hope we aren’t the recipient this game. Most of the anticoaching remarks on here are not from UGA fans and can be ignored. You can figure it out easily. Those that don’t analyse their opinions and a few that try to fake it. A few frustrated fans haven’t quite arrived at understanding that these coaches have worked with new lines nearly every week and put enough together to win the game without resorting to a few secret plays. Judge the coaches as a group and you have to say they are smart and resilient. True fans and alums don’t want any of these coaches gone because those fans are familiar with football. Our defense has several small players who range all over the field with their speed. They interrupt plays including when there is an 8-10 inch reach difference. Watch how high Asher and Evans can leap! They are great athletes on which this team depends, but because they are not perfect some idiot bloggers take cheap and cowardly shots in some blogs. Sometimes writers set them up with negative slants on perfectly good players and game schemes because the writers are informed enough to push buttons and incur wrath as a badge of honor that helps their writer ratings. Some fans aren’t into the nuances of the game like you are and they can’t offer anything positive on these blogs. Oh, well. It’s a free country, at least what’s left of it.
We should devote some time here to your statement about Big-12 teams vs SEC. Do you think Ok St and T Tech can stand up and deliver against our defenses in the SEC? Will Muschamp got rave reviews for only allowing 35 points vs Ok. Don’t you think some of our defenses would have held them to less? I can think of at least 4 in the SEC. And a bunch of us can beat The Zou. Their qb is the best even if most of the passes are small gainers. While that helps the percentages, I can’t take anything away from him when he throws 80-90% completions in his last 2 games. But one guy can’t be the team.
Will have more to say later, but right now I have to do my UGA thing. UgaVII, get up!! We don’t like the way you sleep all weekend after a game. Cut out the drink, son. Why do you think your face sags? Those Indian pushups don’t cut it anymore. Go do your Pal Lotti. Does she know you are headed for Cajun country where those French babes live and eat Et Tu Fay? Be sure you lick your balls before coming back to Savannah else Lotti gets suspicious about Fay.

failure to score td’s in the red zone must be addressed, the next two games will determine georgia’s season. lack of discipline by mark richt is reason why players continue to have off the field issues.it’s crucial that all players be available and not on suspension.

GA has to stop the run and make LSU beat them through the air. If we can make them one dimensional we’ll win provided we don’t turn the ball over. I hope the coaches watched alot of the Fla-LSU game becasuse FLa. nullified LSU’s front four. They were a non-factor. Stafford can’t expect to take a lot of 5 step drops and come away unscathed.

This comment is really about the “Georgia #7 in BCS” article and what Georgia fans should pull for.
You know who UGA fans should pull for, UGA!!! If UGA wins the rest of their games, whether it is beating LSU 2x or avenging the loss against UA then UGA will be the highest ranked 1 loss team. I would be willing to bet my dogs life on it. Literally UGA needs only Penn State or Texas to lose 1x; if either of them does then UGA controls it’s own destiny. That article is typical ill-informed crap. The BCS learned its lesson when AU was left out of the Orange Bowl. If you are in the SEC and your record is equal to any other team then you get the benefit of the doubt. LSU and UF proved that these past 2 years.

Brandon Your comment on the day versus night is just plain wrong. Sure we won the last night game we played at LSU and lost the last day game but apparently you haven’t attended a game at LSU. Those people are some of the best in the world and many, many of them are my friends. But they are also some of the most drunken, brutal and loud-mouthed than any other SEC locale when it comes to football. At night they are only drunker, meaner and louder. It’s the demnnest thing to see the transformation they undergo. Best people on earth to meanest nastiest to great people again.
I’ve seen them play Georgia and a host of other teams and I can tell you, the opponent means nothing. They get rabid over anybody and by nightfall they’ve had plenty more than earlier in the afternoon.

That is because they are not Dawg fans and in fact are on this blog to inflame and say crazy and insulting things. Most regulars on this blog appreciate those fans who come on the blog to talk football and leave the insults to those ignorant people among us. Hopefully both teams will bring their A game and we will get to watch a great game. Of course I will be pulling for my Dawgs. Now as for your comment about the Big 12, I think they have some great offensive teams but they are suspect on defense and as we all know defense wins championships. Plus I believe they will be beating up on each other over the next few weeks as well. The PAC 10 (1) and Big 10 (11) are very weak except for USC, Penn State and Ohio State and have a much easier road because of their week schedules. Anyway thanks for the comments.

LSU is marginal at the QB position, the single most important position on the field. If Martinez blitzes in his LIFE, I recommend he does for LSU. Our down 4 cannot beat their front 5. WE GOTTA BRING THE HEAT and try to let out DB’s make some plays.
And the toss sweep won’t work in Baton Rouge. Find something else Bobo.

I want to know where all these bandwagon bama fans have been the last four seasons. When we meet you in the sec title game we will be a diffrent team. And I’m not 100% sure yall will get there. LSU and Auburn yes I said it Auburn. For the record our passing game will dominate LSU this week. They could barely stop Garcia. Imagine what Stafford and company will do

AR Dawg, sure I understand the LSU fans are horrible at their games, I think that is a matter of pretty much universal agreement among SEC fans. I also understand the later in the day the drunker and more obnoxious. That “night game at Tiger Stadium” is just hype created by LSU fans to try and make their program seem distinctive, don’t buy into it. I saw Alabama beat their * in Tigah Stadium in 2002, 31-0. If you are good enough you can beat them day or night, that is what I am saying.

Has anyone noticed the Bama fans coming out of the woodwork? I don’t remember seeing 1/2 dozen Bama tags from January till after the UGA game now every other car has one on it. I love it! Jump on that bandwagon. I am a big UGA fan and it cracks me up at how many people “love Georgia” but couldn’t name 3 players if they had too and couldn’t tell you who we played Saturday. Heaven forbid Tech finally beat GA this year they might start selling Tech T-shirts again.

MEANT TO MENTION THIS EARLIER but did anybody else catch that the Georgia men’s basketball team was picked to finish last in the SEC East today. It was media voting and they sent me a ballot but, as y’all know, we never vote on such things. So the league scribes aren’t putting much stock in the Dogs’ late-season run last year… .
Tennessee was picked first in the SEC and predicted as overall champion. Florida was second in teh East. Alabama edged LSU in the West by four skinny points.
So there ya go …
ONLY REAL NEWS OUT OF MONDAY’S FOOTBALL PRACTICE was that SE Kris Durham will definitely play. That’s straight from his mouth. LB Dannell Ellerbe and TE Tripp Chandler stood up media requests for interviews. The lates word is questionable and doubtful, however.

Drew, why exactly will the toss sweep NOT work against LSU? Specifically? Coach Richt says we run it more lately because it is something we can block well right now, and Moreno runs it well as he get into space and can find a lane. Good for back to back 100 yrd games and SEC player of the week. What do you know that he obviously does not know?

AR, my friend. I hope you are well. Arguing with the Chimp is like telling the broom it did not get enough dirt out of the corner. Useless, use a swiffer. Get the dirt out and stick it in Chumps mouth when you are finished.
I ran through the my coach can beat your coach to fast. Yeah, my life is now complicated and I do not have the time to blog away with unabandon as before. AR, is unabandon a word. You would know.
On beating Mike the Tiger. I believe it can be done. I believe it will be done. Barnhart picks LSU, I pick the Dawgs. Barnhart went 9-3 last week, whoa. I went 11-1, I have beat the guy every week for the last seven weeks, I forgot to play one week. We beat LSU if we realize they have better lines and will be punishing us unless we dump pass, or toss sweep. Our D beats their D. We win in a close one as always and go to the JAX game the UNDERDAWGS. I would not have it any other way.
AR, I agree on another point about LSU. One year when I was in college at UGA back in the dark ages before Herschel, LSU came to play in Athens. I am a member of the Ag fraternity and on Friday without no warning, the LSU AGR’s arrived. We welcomed them and had a great time having a party that night. Went to the game next day, we won, 1978 I think. Went back to the house and had a band party that night where the Tigger’s proceeded to drunkenly try to destroy our house. Fortunately, we outnumbered them. There is nothing more obnoxious than a drunk Cajun on a Saturday night. Clemson and Florida don’t even play on the same field much less UGA. I bet Harlem on a Saturday night is safer than Baton Rouge on a football Saturday night. The lesson, never underestimate the drunkeness of the Cajun. Their favorite song is “Saturday Night is Allright for Fighting”.
Champagne for all my real friends and Real pain for all my sham friends. You know who you are.

Chimp, we are really not that good, I agree. But we get better every game. Always do. We beat the Red Sticks then we go to Jax and beat you for the second year in a row, beat the Cats, possibly lose to the Wars and then re-play the Bamastans after they lose the eighth in a row to Awburn. Right now, the Wars are the only one’s that concern me, certainly not the Faders, uh Gators. How does it feel that we are ahead of you in the BCS, choking on that sandwich are you. My friend Cuz! A scholar and true southern gentleman of the highest order.
Good to see you and Altamaha on the blog. My blog time has been sparse. The answer to your question would be yes, there is such a word. To reclaim.
Cuz, I have spent countless hours in the bayous of South Louisiana with untold numbers of Coonazz’s. Unfortunately for me matching swig for swig. Not counting the 6-8 games I’ve seen in Baton Rouge. It’s not hype. Bulls in china shops cause less collateral damage than a bunch of drunk Cajuns.
Altamaha, I’m with you. Toss sweep is an effective play against a quick defensive front that may over pursue, especially when a back as Knowshon has quick feet. I think the percentages are short gains but when run effectively can wear down a defense.

BCS Slave The reason why your URL Links keep saying that SoS varies widely as the season progresses, is that you are looking only at SoS through today’s games, and not once have I presented such a URL Link to you - but, instead provided SoS for all known opponents. Everyone knows that UGA’s SoS is the toughest in the nation.**

This is the Official NCAA Strength of Schedule All Known Opponents and UGA has the Number 1 Toughest SoS in the nation. Georgia Tech is Number 24 and Southern California is Number 52.

In journalism school didn’t they teach you to collect all the facts before printing? You made it sound like poor ‘ole Vance Walker was the victim of zealous (racist according to your drooling disciples) officers. Now we learn that Vance had a learner’s license that had been expired for nearly a year (not a few weeks as you suggest). He disregarded a traffic signal (I guess those don’t apply to big time football heroes), and had an expired tag. Since he did not have a driver’s license for the officer to hold in lieu of bail, he was taken into custody. I know you stated the report would not be out until Monday, so why didn’t you refrain from comment without the facts? Being an officer is hard enough without people like you creating more disrespect and chaos.

Gator chomp:
Florida looks to have a good team this year and when we play it will be a battle like it usually is.
UGA did not get lucky last year. 8 straight running plays on UGA’s first drive resulted in a touchdown. It wasn’t like FL had 7 turnovers and UGA had some trick plays… UGA ran it right down Florida’s throat time after time. The only thing that UGA got lucky on in last year’s game is that UF did not have a defense. This year’s FL D looks to be improved.
TN didn’t get lucky against UGA last year and neither did Bama this year against the Dawgs. Maybe they didn’t get UGA’s best effort or cleanest game, but they won fair and square.
