UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Munson at stadium for Dogs-Vandy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well, I know for a fact it’s going to be a good day. Got to be. First of all I got to spend some of the pregame meal visiting with legendary Atlanta Journal columnist Furman Bisher. Obviously I’ve known him for years but it’s always enjoyable to listen to his stories and talk about how the business has changed.
Right in the middle of our conversation, who should walk up but another legend — Larry Munson. Munson made a bee line straight to Furman.
“I’ve been trying to call you. You don’t return your phone calls,” Bisher said.
“Sorry,” Munson replied. “I’ve been on my butt.”
For the record, Munson looked like he felt much, much better, obviously well enough to come to a game he wasn’t working for the first time in 43 years. He and his son Michael visited the radio booth and then adjourned to a suite at the other end of the press box to watch the game.
So no matter what happens in the Vanderbilt game today, it’s going to be a good day for me. As I wrote here yesterday, I have a sneaking suspicion the Dogs are going to put it together today. I just think they’ve been really close to putting it all together to date and they’re about to get all the dials set where they need to be.
That said, I completely understand the Commodores are viable opponent, maybe as sharp as they’ve been for a while, and their last two teams have given Georgia fits. I think it will be close for a long time, then the Dogs will pull away.
But I’ve been wrong before. We’ll see.
Hang out with me here today and we’ll talk about it as it’s going on.
Dogs to kickoff. Here we go… .

UPDATE #1
Dogs blow first scoring chance. Drove the ball nicely down to the Vandy 26, with Knowshon Moreno’s 22-yard run in which he stiff-armed a Commodore to the ground highlighting the series. But then they got cute, with a zone-read play going for 1, a naked bootleg right resulting in a throw away and a counter left only going for 3.
Then Blair Walsh hooked at 39-yard wide left.

This just in … Matthew Stafford can throw and A.J. Green can catch.
Two plays after hooking on a 49-yard pass play down the the Vandy 17, the duo hooked up again for a 17-yard TD in which Green snatched out of the air a Stafford bullet to the left front corner.
PAT Good.

UPDATE #3
Dogs go to the well once too often. Stafford intercepted by Vandy’s D.J. Moore on a deep pass for Mohamed Massquoi down the right sideline. Massaquoi was open but Stafford didn’t get enough on the throw and Moore went up and grabbed it. It was an SEC-leading 12th interception for the Commodores… .
Earlier in the series Stafford tried to hit Green deep down the LSL, with Moore defending, and Green couldn’t come up with it.
Moore was also defending on Green’s previous two catches. Interesting that Georgia is going aggressive and deep after Vandy’s best overall player.

I will try to stay as positive as much as I can, but I wish everyone would stop praising Matheww Stafford. This offense has no rythme, they are out of sync and I wouldnt be suprised if we see Joe Cox today. Mathew missed two long balls by under throwing the ball not setting his feet on one of the throws. Moreno is going to rush for at least 150 yards, but Stafford looks bad in this game.

HALFTIME
GEORGIA 14, VANDERBILT 7
Commodores go 75 yards in eight plays and score on an 18-yard pass to Jamie Graham with 22 seconds remaining in the half.
The TD drive could not have taken place without the referees. Georgia was called for pass interference twice during the series, once on Asher Allen and three plays later on Bryan Evans.
The first call on Allen was one of the worst you’ll ever see. Perfect defensive position, receiver trips on Allen’s legs FROM BEHIND. Horrible call… . The call against Evans was less clear but, again, appeared to be good defense. Evans had tight coverage from behind and the ball was thrown behind the receiver. So instead of fourth-and-three at the Georgia 25, it was first-and-10 at the 18. Commodores scored on the next play on a good catch over Evans… .
Just a theory but, considering their worst-in-the-nation status in penalties, I don’t think the Dogs are going to get a break.
Feels very reminiscent of last week’s game against Tennessee in that Georgia has dominated statistically but holds only a skinny, one-score lead.

A few observations:
The play calling is WAY too conservative. Richt seems to want to win games by a touchdown or less. We should be up 21 to nothing right now. Instead, a phantom pass interference call lets Vandy extend a drive and eventually cut our lead in half. If we were more aggressive on play calling, we would be blowing this team out.
The refs are letting a lot of calls go on both sides…to their credit. But as is typical, they make a call on Asher Allen for pass interference extending the last Vandy drive. The replay didn’t reveal any violation. If one occurred earlier, it was a very picky and selective call.
The defense is generating very little pass rush and seems to be having some trouble stopping the run. We did blitz a couple of times, but they were delayed corner blitzes that were poorly executed.
I hope the offense opens up and the defense tightens up. We should be blowing this team out and it makes me sick that UGA doesn’t pull out all the stops to dominate this team instead of playing down to them.

Ga has not jelled as a team, to me. We have our two biggest test coming up. The injuries are killing us, penalties, though the first pass interference call was the stupid refs fault. We have got to get it together.

KB: I agree, injuries have killed us and thrown the whole teams rhythm off.
Well, the second half begins with UGA running the ball…eating the clock. This is hard nosed, old fashioned football. They seem determined to run the ball down Vandy’s throat.
One very risky pass to Green and we are in the red zone. Next play Moreno goes down for no gain. We need a touchdown here…not a field goal. Running is touch down here.
Moreno takes the ball to the left side…running is tough down here in the red zone…Moreno makes it look easy. Touchdown!

It was the Knowshon Moreno show to start the second half. Dogs drive 73 yards in 6 plays in 2:40 with Moreno carrying the ball on four plays.
He appeared to score on the fifth play on a toss-sweep right. But an official replay showed his knee touched the ground after he was tripped up cutting up field. Nice highlight nonetheless.
Fittingly, Moreno took a pitch around left end and, following the block of FB Shaun Chapas, scored untouched at the left pylon.

Why are we running to the short side of the field. Why do we do that pinned inside the ten?
CRAP! Vandy interception! Stafford is looking at receivers like he has laser beams for eyes.
Asher Allen has missed two interceptions today. In the NFL he will make those plays. I wish he’d make them here.
3rd and 8 and we can’t stop it. 1st and goal Vandy. I am getting sick. We need a big play and we don’t get it. Again, Evans is trailing the receiver on the play.
Our offense has got to play better to win this game. Our D is not cutting it today.

Georgia is lacking in the “killer instinct” and “Finish the drill” department. We should be way up on Vandy. Yet we keep letting them hang around. To me, today, it is the offense that is allowing them to stay in the game. Stafford is just not at his best today.

GEORGIA 21, VANDERBILT 14
Commodores take advantage of another Georgia turnover. Four plays after Stafford gets a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage and Myron Lewis intercepts at the Bulldogs’ 26… .
Georgia forced them into a third-annd-seven at the 23 but MacKenzi Adams completed a pass for 15 yards to Jamie Graham… .
Next play Adams throws a perfect fade to Graham, who makes a great catch behind Georgia cornerback Bryan Evans.
So it’s not what I thought it’d be. Going to be a typical Georgia-Vandy game of late — a war.

Brian Evan Georgia DB is horrible once again beaten for a td. This program will never be a National Championship contender with the current coaches here and Stafford is way overratted. Why not give the ball to knowshon on that seecond down instead of the fullback. Where is the tight end in this offense> This Aron kid i havent seen him yet. Fire Mike Bobo and Willie Martenez. Our offense is getting sloppy. This happens EVERY game. We get sloppy in the third quarter and let teams hang around. Vandy is threatening to tie the game and there is no reason for it.
We can’t get a sack? The D has got to pressure this kid at QB and for some reason we keep trying to out man them.
Our offensive line can’t block consistently. There are two or three defenders in the backfield on every play. Injuries to the O and D lines have really hurt us.

Well, we squeak out with a win against an inferior team. I don’t believe in style points. But I will say, we do need a killer instinct. I don’t care if we blow people out…but we need to hang a big lead on them in the first half and THEN get conservative.
This game has been very frustrating for fans. We cannot believe what we are seeing. This is all about coaching. It is about getting the team inspired to play. It is about using inspired play calling that generates enthusiasm. We see no killer instinct…no concerted effort to score points…nothing that makes me think we will beat LSU, Florida or even Tech.
We are going to need a monster game against LSU and Florida to win. I’m still waiting to see what that looks like this year.

You are an idiot because you talk and act as though you know something about the program. You ask why a 220lb Aron White is starting at tight end……well any true fan of this team would know that Trip Chandler is out with an injury and Bruce Figgins is playing with a shoulder that needs surgery. Our offense is overrated???…yea ok…thats why we lead the SEC in total offense, averaging over 400 yds a game. Stafford leads the league in passing with 1600 yds+. Bobo doesn’t need to get fired nor does Willie Martinez ( Georgia is giving up 14 points per game and only 60 yards rushing). Your problem my friend is that you know nothing about the “game” and you make stupid suggestion about what this team needs.

The Position players are some of the best in the Country (Green, Moreno,& Massquoi). Stafford could be the best QB in the Country if he could just throw the long ball consistently. Way to many missed opportunities throughout today’s game and leading up to this game. The defense is solid, one of the best in the Country. The O-line will be the downfall this season. way to many injuries to overcome.
We should be able to get pass LSU, but unless something changes with this team soon, Florida will Drum our butts down there. Stafford has got to start hitting these WR’s in stride, especially when we have separation from the secondary.

Ugarulz44 u living in la la land and any smart football fan who want to see their team win a national championship knows that under the current coaching staff this team will never win a national championship. Are we good enough for 10 wins and a bowl game,,, Yes, but the program should be better than that and it’s still about winning 9 or 10 games and being happy with that you obviously are ok with that,,, well I am not and that dosent make me an idiot. My point with the tight end situation is that Tripp isnt tthat good either and the position is weak. U cant tell me you think Willie and Bobo are good coaches

My concern about the secondary is how short they are. Do we have any DB’s over 5’9”?

I think it would be a good time to talk to Tommy Bowden about replacing Right as head coach. With the talent that Ga. gets I think even he could look like a great coach at Ga!!!

ok dawgfan1911……
if you can think of any available DC or OC that are on the market for hire that are better than Coach Martinez or Coach Bobo than please tell us. If anyone says that we need to get rid of our coaching staff is a complete moron. Coach Searls is the best Offensive Line coach in the league and Rodney Gardner is a recruiting genius. But you probably have no idea who those coaches are because frankly all you sound like is a walking talking ESPN soundbite.

I can’t believe what I am hearing from some of you morons…..Calling for Coach Richt’s job. He has a 80% winning record. We are #10 in the country. We are tied for 1st place in the division, and everyone wants to replace the coaching staff. We are off to a slow start, but that doesn’t mean that we need to clean house on the coaching staff. All of you feel in love with the preseason ranking, and forgot to realize that you have to play a whole season to win it all, and frankly we are so very much in the thick of things. Yes, I agree the team needs to start executing better, but we still a very good team. GET OVER ALL OF YOURSELVES.

What we are missing is killer instinct.
PNWDawgGirl: we don’t need style points in these games. We need to have that killer instinct that gets us up big in these games and then runs the ball down people’s throats. We let inferior teams stay in the game with us too long and then WE get sloppy in the second half.
Our offense is not aggressive enough or complex enough. Neither is our defense. I know we’re playing through injuries. But a little fire and creativity never hurt anyone.

A win is a win so I am happy, but I just wish as a true fan we would run some smart offensive plays . On defense teams will see that Brian Evans is a weak spot for this defense and they will try to exploit him. LSU is not a good pass team but we have to stop the run so they cant play action. If we do that I think our chances of winning next week are great. I hope that game is at 330 because LSU plays very well t night at home. Hopefully Ellerbie will be back and Chandler so they can at least attempt a pass to the tight end. Finally, I know I have been critical of both offensive and defensive coaches, but Bowden as the Head Coach of UGA, NO WAY!!!

Predictable play calling; Flat performance by all but Knowshon; No pass rush to speak of; Continued consistent inability to score inside the red zone. Coach Richt - send Bobo to Clemson to mentor your son and resume offensive coordinator position yourself! WIth play like the past couple weeks…JAX may be embarassing!

Don’t look now, but THE Ohio State Buckeyes are coming on strong (like I told you morons 6 weeks ago). Bet they leap frog UGA tomorrow!

Well a W is better than a L, but I get worn out watching the listless attitudes displayed week in and week out by UGA. We have absolutely no drive or excitement or enthusiasm.
CMR is a wonderful person, but seems to be a slow learner as a HC. One thing that would help - lose those damn sunglasses on the sidelines, so his players can see emotion in his eyes. If he has any.
Why can we not run the frigging ball inside the 20?
