UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Bulldogs poised for breakout game

I’ve mentioned this at times this week but I get the feeling we’re about to see a breakout game from the Bulldogs.

Georgia enters Saturday’s homecoming game against Vanderbilt as a 14.5-point favorite. I’m not into gambling but I have a feeling the Dogs will win by at least that many.

I know, I know. Vandy traditionally gives Georgia fits, particularly the last two times they played. In fact, the Commodores won on their last trip to Athens, 24-22 in 2006. And I’m sure everybody remembers the Houdini act it took for the Bulldogs to pull off a 20-17 win in Nashville last year.

But all that’s part of my reasoning. Georgia is not taking this lightly. One of Vandy’s most effective tactics is the art of sneaking up on opponents who might not realize just how good they are. At 5-1 and leading the East with a 3-1 record, the ‘Dores aren’t sneaking up on anybody this year.

Never mind that Vandy is last in the league in total offense and 10th and total defense and all that. I respect what they’ve done on special teams and with timely plays in the red zone and big plays on defense. It’s really what Georgia is doing that gives me this hunch.

Based on what I saw in the Tennessee game, the Dogs look like a team getting ready to launch. The Vols came into that contest leading the SEC in total defense and Georgia went through them like wet paper with 458 yards offense and 29 first downs. Conversely, the Commodores haven’t been very diverse on offense, relying mainly on the run to get them down the field. Well, if you haven’t noticed Georgia is rated No. 4 in the nation against the run, allowing just 52.2 yards a game.

Am I completely off base here? Anybody else seeing this? Hey, I didn’t see Alabama putting 31 on them in the first half either.

Let’s hear some score predictions from you guys. Who do you expect to have a big game for the Dogs?

With that, let’s check out some links:

Hard to miss it since it was linked on the front page of ajc.com but heralded Georgia quarterback signee Aaron Murray suffered a broken leg in a game in Tampa… .

David Hale, who covers Georgia for the Macon and Columbus papers, has a regular feature in his Bulldogs Blog called Deleted Scenes. It’s basically a clearinghouse of all the quotes gathered throughout the week that he was unable to use. Great stuff for you voracious Dawg readers… .

A nice story in the Athens Banner-Herald this morning on Georgia AD Damon Evans coaching his son Cameron’s little league team. Look out Mike Bobo, Evans is the play-caller… .

Don’t know how many of you guys caught my note about a Georgia researcher discovering a long lost UGA school song called “Red and Black March.” Well it’s supposed to be played for the first time in about 100 years on Saturday during halftime of the Vanderbilt game. If you’d like a sneak preview, a gentleman named Michael Brewer, the music director of the Athens Brass Choir directed me to his website where you can hear his group playing the song Aug. 3 at the Botanical Gardens. Let us know what you think.

28 to 7, Georgia.

I also believe we are due for a breakout game. Honestly, except for the first half of the Alabama game Georgia has played about as well as I expected this year.

This time last year we were 4-2 and ranked number 24, then things came together and we wound up number 2. Stafford is playing much better this year, AJ Green is a valuable addition and our depth is allowing us to overcome injuries that would destroy lesser teams.

Lots of football left to play and the schedule is as tough as anticipated, but I am still optimistic.

Chip, I agree with your prediction if the team truly does take Vandy seriously. Hopefully all they are focusing on is Vandy’s division leading 3-1 reoord and not their statistical rankings.

There’s no question we left a lot of points on the field last week. If the offense moves the ball as well this week and actually scores on most opportunities, we should get the “style points” that those midwest and west coast poll-voting sportswriters have to see.

Chip, I’d like to think so as well….our team played very good against UT. Their “D” is no pushover, so I’m confident we can move the ball.

Any updates on who will be rotating in the safety positions now that Banks is hurt, again? Do you know if Goodman has ever gotten a chance at Kickoff returns?

Thanks Chipper…

Chip the Dawgs are poised and ready for a breakout game but…..It’s not going to happen. The offense got clicking and the defense is tough and this will be a hard fought tough game that UGA just ‘finds a way to win’ again. UGA 23 Vandy 13. A semi-breakout will happen in Baton Rouge and the full blow breakout will occur on the St Johns river…

Duke will not beat UM…

I see the Tech game as a blow out I just don’t know wrong end of that score…

UGA will finally put it together and win big 41-17

PS…I also predicted the TCU win last night!

I think a lot of dogs will have a big day. I see both MM and AJ having 100 yard receiving games and Knowshon will gain 150 with some great blocks by BS. Stafford should have his 2nd 300 game no problem and the D shuts Vandy out of the end zone. It ain’t gonna be pretty for the ‘dores. Go Dawgs!

The Georgia Bulldogs are clearly the best college football team in the country. Forget an SEC and MNC, if Georgia were to play last year’s superbowl champ NY Giants, Dawgs would have a “breakout game” and win 72 to 3. It’s unfair that Pete Carroll, Nick Saban and the rest of poor college football programs have to fielf teams with Coach Richt’s rejects.

Slow down guys! Lets not get rediculis here. We have some major issues here. The offensive line is very suspect, and I wwould venturer to say that if the Georgia offensive coaches will allow Mathew Stafford the freedom to run more no huddle and put the ball up more, then we will break out on offense. Georgia seems to think to have balance you must try to run the ball down defenses throats, even when the running play is set up to be defended well. I say start the game out in shot gun formation and use these receivers we have MM and AJ should have big games but remmeber you are dealing with a very experienced Vandy secondary, thee stregnth of their defense. It will come down to the type of passes they call. Throw in some screens, run some slants, bootlegs, and throw deep a few times to AJ and MM.I noticed we are running a lot of sweeps lately, now that Sutherland is back line up power eye and run caleb and Moreno. On defense willie is going to have to be creative with his schemes, which to be honest with you I dont think he knows how. Disguise the blitze paockage and keep that qb in the middle of the pocket because he is not tall and if he breaks containment he can make big plays for the team. Finally whatever happened to letting Moreno return punts? He has great field position written all over him for this team. Now if we do these things then we will have a blow out game against Vandy and we will creep up in the top 5 or 6 with byu loss and Texas or Mizzou losing we should be at least in the top 8. If we win by a field goal were done.

No, we’re NOT “Great” yet…but who would’ve thunk it…walking out of Nashville, TN last year that we’d go on the run we did and finish # 2 in the nation!!! Dawgs FINALLY come alive tomorrow!

I also feel it’s going to be a break out day for the Dawgs. Vandy has no offense, and I don’t think a new QB is going to be the answer. The Dogs Defense has been solid all year with the exception of that first half against Bama. If it weren’t for the mistakes in the red zone last week, the final score would have been 42-0. I see our play getting better each week, and if we can finally settle our Offensive line issues, this team will be ready for this stretch run. I think the Dawgs win 34-10.

Chip, the Red and Black March sounded like something from Monty Python’s Flying Circus. I mean…I guess it would grow on you after a 100 years or so but I can’t really see it in my lifetime.

The Dawgs will roll once they learn to focus. Lack of laser focus on the task at hand results in the numerous penalties we have witnessed that kills our drives and keeps the opponents drives alive. Remember…football is 90% mental — the other half is physical. (sorry Yogi..it applies to football too)

Chip T. Wow, you have the same first name and same last initial as me! But I’d have to disagree with you completely. I believe the Bulldogs would get crushed by the New York Giants. Heck, I’m not even sure they won’t get crushed by Vanderbilt. And I’m not sure what “fielf” means but you can be sure it’s a word I’m not familiar with and would never use… .

As for the Red and Black March I had the same reaction as most of you here. Keep in mind, it’ll probably sound quite different when played by the 400-plus member Redcoat Band… .

jfergNCdawg: The same people will be rotating in at safety that have been all season. It’s basically CJ Byrd and Reshad Jones every play with occasional relief provided by Drew Williams. Not much help other than that… .

As far as practice updates, sorry I haven’t been able to provide more of those for you lately. Tim and I have been pretty slammed just writing and reporting our stories for you and, the fact is there has been very little to tell you if and when we get the few minutes on the practice fields they provide us. I think you’re right Chip. I think we were a couple mistakes away from putting up a statement game last week and I think we will play to our potential this week. Vandy’s anemic offense will be no match for our defense and I think Staff and Knowshon will both have great games and we will bring Vandy back down to earth and win 42-7.

By shane#1

October 17, 2008 11:08 AM | Link to this

I am not looking for a “breakout” in this game. I saw UT come out in the shotgun and multiple reciever sets when their backs were gaining 5 and 6 yds a carry. I hope the Dawgs don’t make the same mistake. Vandy’s run defense sucks so let’s run Knowshon and Caleb right down their throats! Vandy always plays UGA tough and they have a good team. Nobody “overlooked” them, they just play take away D and run the ball pretty well. We have seen the turnovers from the Gamecocks, UT and AU when they put the ball in the air so let’s run the ball and play some field posistion football. Get the W, if the Dawgs beat LSU at home that will be enough of a “breakout” game!

By baloney

Chip, I agree with you and these other posters. UGA is the best team in the history of sports. Not just the history of football, but the history of sports. When they lose it isn’t because the other team is better, it is simply that UGA didn’t play good that day. Keep up the good work.

My DWAGS are ready for their brakeout game. The best teams in the country can’t perform at the best level every time. We lined up and beat a good GSU team. We walked over a conference champion in Eastern Michigan. We flew across the country and showed the Devils. Then we beat a UT team that has a coach that has won many titles.

This week will be a tough game. We all know the SEC is the best conference. We’re the best team in that conference which means we’re the best overall.

Pac10: Vandy would be 2nd best Big10: Vandy would be 3rd best ACC: Vandy would be the best

UGA has a tough schedule ahead. We hit our bump in Alabama and when we play them again in December we’ll show them that they were just lucky.

I like the Red and Black March as a classic marching band piece, but it has no real “hook” to it. Be that as it may, I would be very grateful if the Redcoat Band Director would PLEASE do two things: 1) STOP having the best marching band unit in the country play horrid versions of 1960’s-1970’s rock music. The Olympic music, for the most part was well done, BUT that leads me to the next point… 2)Come up with more than 3 or 4 shows per year so that fans in frequent attendance don’t have to hear the same things over and over.

Bowl predictions this time of the year are worth a POS. With all of the parity around…who really has a clue how this season is going to turn out. I mean hell, the polls shift wildly every WEEK and you can guarantee it won’t look ANYTHING in the end like it does now.

Nowadays, the CFB “experts” can do little more than humor fans with their “expert” predictions and analyses. The AP voters really don’t know much more than the average football fan and the Coaches don’t have enough time to thoroughly evaluate other teams.

Parity increases every year it seems and this will further expose the poll system for the sham that it is.

Sometimes I’m embarassed by my own Dawg fans. Last week we were going to “blowout Tenn.” Afterwards the excuses started, “Well, Tenn has one of the best defenses in the SEC.”

We haven’t beaten anyone worth a sh!t this year.

Vandy is better this year than the last 2 years, and we lost 1 and almost lost the other. Now we’re going to “blow them out.” Shut the f*ck up already and face reality. We’re just not that damn good. AND Vandy just lost to one of the two worst teams in the SEC - Miss State!!

No wonder other fans get on these boards and bash your dumb a$ses.

Ramble On, could that be you (“…thanks for keeping the spirit rivalry in perspective…”)? Sounds too sporty for you. Anyway, c’mon back Monday: I’m sure you will…

Well guys and gals, I’m going out on the limb and saying the Dawgs cover. Just a hunch. My son and I saw the Vandy game first hand last year and it was the nailbiter; however it seemed like it shouldn’t have been that close. Sort of like the Dawgs didn’t have their sea legs or something and then broke out against FL.

As for Tech, I think GT takes the game but in a close one. CU is discombobulated at best.

lynninsavannah:

I agree that the Redcoat Band should play more than 3 or 4 shows. However, I can only imagine how difficult it must be to research, arrange, and choreograph each show. I’m sure there are very few Redcoats who get a full ride scholarship for marching, so I can only assume that band participation is mostly voluntary and students still have a full academic workload on top of band time.

I corresponded with Dr. Culvahouse a couple of years ago about why they changed “Glory Glory” from B-flat to E-flat. My position was that nobody sings the fight song anymore because E-flat is a difficult key for men in particular to sing in. His reply was that they didn’t think the fans were singing anyway! I dunno, I always used to sing it with a “…and to hell with Georgia Tech!” at the end - regardless of who we were playing. Not anymore - and I sing in a band, but E-flat is way out of my range.

I know this is getting off topic a bit, but I’m curious to know if others out there no longer sing the fight song at games since the key was changed a few years ago.

I would love to see UGA start to dominate teams that are inferior. Until we do, you can take all the MNC talk and throw it out the window.

What we need against Vandy is another game in the “W” column. At some point in the season wins and losses will be what matter instead of “breakout” and “style point” games… as it should be.

Seven games into the season and we still have not even perfected the things that should be perfected coming out of fall camp. Those things include avoidable penalties, special teams play, etc. That well oiled machine that causes opponants to adjust because of our game plan instead of vice versa is still quite squeaky. Yes, a lot of injuries and a lot of young guys having to grow up fast have been a huge factor, but we are failing in the basics, imo.

Can we pull it together? Sure… but until we do, we should be realistic and understand that LSU, Fla, and Auburn are not games in which mistakes will be easily overcome.

I’m not trying to be the voice of doom, but when we are failing at the things that should be automatic by now, we don’t need to worry about breakout games because the rest of the schedule is unrelenting and unforgiving. We should just worry about getting w’s on the board and we accomplish that by having methodical game plans and complete focus.

Denverdawg,

you stated, “Vandy just lost to one of the two worst teams in the SEC - Miss State!!”

Very true…that is why UGA is going to win easily. Vandy’s OL is horrible. They’ve been skating on thin ice this season and finally fell through at MSU to the tune of 107 yds total offense.

Last year, the Dawgs were coming off of a humiliating defeat against UT when they faced Vanderbilt…this time it is a little different wouldn’t you agree?

I don’t care for a “breakout” game——- just a “complete” game would be welcome news…. no breakdowns in the red-zone like against Tenn, a balanced running and passing game unlike the Alabama game, a strong pass defense (haven’t seen that all season), and fewer dumb@$$ penalties.

Dawgs defense will post its first shutout of the season and the offense puts up at least 38 points. They will execute in the red zone and score touchdowns this week. They cannot leave any more points on the field. They should have scored at least 50 against ASU and UT and scored 10 to 20 points more against everybody they played this year with the exception of Alabama. Georgia’s scoring defense would be much better if they hadn’t committed so many stupid penalties that prolonged drives for the other teams that lead to scores. Time for MR to shelf the nice guy image and let his Dawgs beat the crap out of somebody otherwise a one loss USC could still be ranked higher than a one loss UGA.

Go Dawgs!

What I saw against Tennessee was a Georgia team gathering steam. They moved the ball well against a good UT defense (one that is a dang sight better than the one Georgia will face this weekend). It is true that there were hiccups—red zone execution, turnovers, a still-mediocre pass rush, too many penalties, etc.—but the team is clearly starting to gel. The talent is there. A solid performance on Saturday, coupled with another one in Baton Rouge next weekend, and suddenly Georgia is playing Florida for all of the marbles, as predicted in the preseason. Win that one-game playoff and the Dawgs win the SEC East. Beat Tech, win the SECCG against Bama (it won’t be anyone else, I guarantee it), and suddenly those sanguine preseason prognostications don’t look that far off the mark.

Oh, and bowl projections right now mean ZERO. Trying to peg that is like printing a weather forecast for next July 4—100% guesswork. Just filling up space.

I hope you idiots have given Vandy enough bulletin board material, assuming anyone reads this crap. If some logic will fit in your pointy heads, remember that last year was supposed to be a statement game following our a*-whippin by UT. Yes it was, in a sense, but we should have lost it. Just be satisfied with “Ws” and forget about polls. Enough “Ws” and the polls will take care of themselves.

Chip you are correct UGA is due to “breakout” as you call it. But until the penalty problem and the mental mistakes stop we don’t “breakout”. Coaches mental error when we didn’t get the automatic 1st down on the holding call inside the redzone. Ref’s mistake but one of the coaches should have called timeout and gotten ahold of the situation before the next play. Dropped touchdown pass, take the points that those 2 playes could have produced and we have a “breakout” game against Tennessee. Our players and coaches will have a complete game this season and to be honest with you I hope it’s not against Vandy, or LSU. I hope it’s in Jacksonville against the Gators. Be nice to beat those Gators 2 years in a row.

No Chip,

Vandy is a better team than UT this season and The Dawgs found a way to keep The Vols in the game until the 4th qtr. If The Dawgs were going to click, it would have happened against UT. Yeah, I know about The UT D - best in The SEC and all. But we had that problem against SC. I don’t even want to talk about the problems we had with Bama.

I see no breakout. On the contrary, this will be a much closer game than most think. My guess is 4 - 7 points in favor of My Dawgs.

What does a “breakout” game mean ? Does it mean that UGA has underperformed in every game this year? If thats what it means, I believe it. What is expected ? A three TD win over every opponent ? I think a “breakout” win should have been expected against South Carolina, Alabama, and TN. Why should it happen now ?

I am absolutely sick of seeing the Yellow Jacket buzz all over my computer screen. Ga Tech sucks. Major programs don’t down size their Stadiums or have give aways to sell tickets. Paul Johnson is a surley guy, as well as a person who can’t stand for anyone to speak ill of his SYSTEM or of anything he does. If they are not very careful, they may get blown out at Clemson. If you bet, put your money on GA. Tech plays GA close every year because it is all they have to play for other than a Bowl before Dec. 20 every year. This year, it may not be close. By the way, how many Ads have you seen by the University of GA trying to sell Football tickets? And which GA School is talking about expanding their Stadium? Well, it ain’t Ga Tech. I suspect they may beplanning on taking out a few more 1000 seats. If they get it down to about 18,000, they can fill it up.

Football is a game of matchups.

Vandy is 10th in the SEC against the run. UGA is most dangerous when it establishes the run and passes off of that attack.

Vandy is last in the SEC in passing offense. UGA is 2nd in the SEC in rushing defense. UGA is going to contain the run. Then pin their ears back on 3rd down.

UGA’s biggest weakness is with the OL. But it’s easier for an OL to runblock than it is to pass block.

And any football fan knows that Moreno doesn’t need much room to make a play out of nothing.

UGA bucks the trend and wins by 20.

To reality check: I agree that we are strong at the skill positions, but our O-line and D-line are not as good as last year. This team can be dominated by LSU.

What are we doing with the BCS Rankings out tomorrow ?

Southern California plays Washington State who is 1 of the most God-Awful Football Teams of all-time along with the other 9 PAC-1 Teams.

Florida is off today. Alabama plays Ole Miss, in the depleted SEC West.

Watching the mid-week games this week prior to our game today, it has become clear that indeed there are 11 Conferences and the Independents and that all these teams deserve a shot at Being The Best.

That’s going to take money away ?

The Weenie Bowls, which already cost the football teams who go to them more than they make on the lousy bowls, are going to be hurt they say. I don’t buy that. Those games would have some meaning.

It is no longer Notre Dame and then everyone else.

It’s not just Michigan anymore.

As a matter of fact, it is not just the Big 10 and the PAC-10 and then everyone else any more.

The hype about the Big XII is proven every single year at the end of the season as these bowl games are played, that the voters – both coaches and sportswriters – vote the Big XII as a block. It’s collusion, plain and simple and proven every single year.

The Top 6 in the BCS Poll released Sunday will most likely contain the Pick Two Mythical National Championship Game Contenders. There is an outside chance with Four (4) BCS Top 6 Teams today all being from the Big XII South, that some team not ranked in the Top 6 will compete for The Mythical Pick Two National Championship Game for the Football Bowl Subdivision made up of 11 Conferences and the Independents.

Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State.

Missouri is 13th, Kansas is 18th.

Kansas has played 1 team who has a winning record. And, they lost to them.

Missouri has played 1 team who has a winning record. And, they lost to them too.

By ............................................BuLLdawg

Oklahoma State beat Missouri who has beat no one, played 1 team, and lost. That’s their claim to fame ? Beating Missouri ? That makes them a BCS MNC Game Title Contender ? Get Real.

Oklahoma has already Lost. And, they clearly have zero defense like every one other of these 6 Big XII Top Football Teams in the nation. Oklahoma has to play Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Texas Tech - NOT 1 OF WHOM HAS BEATEN ANYONE - and if Oklahoma wins these 3 games, they deserve to be in the Mythical Pick 2 National Championship Bowl Game ? I hardly think that is fair.

Texas hasn’t played any 1 with a winning record except for Oklahoma. Texas has games with Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Kansas coming up NOT 1 OF WHOM HAS BEATEN ANYONE - and if they win these 4 games, they deserve to be in the Mythical Pick 2 National Championship Bowl Game ? I hardly think that is fair either.

Texas Tech is 1 of the BCS Top 6 Teams who has played not 1 football game all season long to prove its hyped fluffed up puffed up rankings. This will be proven out with them too over the course of the next 4 games after they play BCS Rankings Number 89 Texas A&M Aggies today who are 2-4 and a woeful football team along with the 6 bottom dwellers in the Big XII not a 1 of whom is ranked in the BCS Top 75 football teams in America today. Texas Tech’s next 4 games are Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma State and then Oklahoma. In the name of God Above, what is Texas Tech doing being ranked Number 5 in the BCS Rankings today ?

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech all 4 in the BCS Top 6 teams today and all 4 in the Big XII South.

These are the Best Football Teams in America ?

It could happen his week or it could be next week at Baton Rouge. With Southerland back, our blocking will be much more effective. We’ll also need Ellerbe down the stretch to repeat the pattern of the past two years- a breakout game and winning out. The national pundits have jumped on the Florida bandwagon and that’s OK with me. Here’s hoping for a second crack at Alabama.
