UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Winds a-howlin’ through Sanford Stadium
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from the press box at Sanford Stadium. As I sit here high above the 50-yard line one thing dominates my thoughts — I probably should have brought a jacket.
I checked the weather earlier today and it said temperatures in the low 70s and I thought to myself, “nice day.” What I didn’t take into account was the overcast skies and the 17- to 20-mph winds that are whipping through this open-air press box as I write. I’ve already rolled down the sleeves on my long-sleeve dress shirt and have my keys and blackberry holding down my notes and papers.
While it’s an annoyance for me, I believe it will be a factor in today’s game. I’m looking at the American flag in the northwest corner of the stadium and it’s flapping in the direction of the northwest. Earlier it was blowing dead straight toward the East. Georgia special teams guru Jon Fabris has been looking up at the sky and walking around the field ripping up grass and throwing it up air a lot so you can tell it’s on his mind.
Who win’s the coin toss and gets to pick which end zone to defend will be a major factor. Of course, special teams always are. The Bulldogs have had special teams touchdowns in each of the last three games in this series.
A couple of observations before kickoff:
(1) Whatever was wrong with Knowshon Moreno’s elbow isn’t bothering him anymore. He has nothing, no pads, no wrapping, no braces, on either elbow. Maybe that’ll change before the game starts but I wouldn’t think so… .
(2) Tennessee is in their all-white uniforms. I read a story this week that came with illustrations about how they were supposed to whip out the old-school orange pants from the Johnny Majors days. If it had anything to do with Majors coach Phillip Fulmer probably had something to do with derailing it… .
(3) Speaking of Majors, I learned today he had the sports information department moved out of the athletics complex because he didn’t like so many reporters milling around. What was it Devo said in that song about paranoia?
(4) Looks like TE Aron White and FB Shaun Chapas are starting.
That’s all for now. Stay tuned for updates below throughout the game. I’ll start up a new blog as soon as the game is over. Feel free to ask anything you wish and I’ll answer as best we can.
Enjoy the game!

GEORGIA 7-0
The Bulldogs draw first blood on a 1-yard plunge by FB Brannan Southerland. Score was set up by a 37-yard catch and run by FB Shaun Chapas on a screen pass on third-and-10.
Southerland dropped a pass earlier in the game but definitely is making an impact in his first game off of injury.
Georgia forced UT punt in three plays and will take over at its own 33.

GEORGIA 10-0
Blair Walsh kicks 34-yard field goal at the 3:12 mark to put Georgia up by two scores. Freshman flanker A.J. Green dropped a wide-open pass for a sure TD and Matt Stafford banged his throwing hand in the process.
The key so far is the Dogs had the ball for 22 plays and nearly 10 minutes on their first two drives. If they can get the ball back again quickly they can really start daining the Vols defense.

I know A.J. Green is kicking himself. What a sure touchdown that would have been. Overall though, we look pretty good. It’s great to have Southerland back, and Prince Miller is an undetected threat.

i am sick of the recent play calling. what happened to georgia being a rushing team? 2 FADE ROUTS TO THE RIGHT SIDE!? we should be up 21-0 right now. Mark Richt needs to take back the play calling right now. we need to be pounding the ball. We have the depth at RB to do it.

GEORGIA 13, TENNESSEE 0
Another Walsh FG, this one 20 yards. Not to be pessimistic but getting 3 instead of 6 these last two times down can come back to haunt you. Remember ‘06… .
And I hate the fade pattern. 50-50 play at best. Love to have seen a couple of toss sweeps there… .
Anyway, the good news is Georgia is dominating the game. In first half, Dogs had 130 yards to UT’s 20. Time of possession 9:32 to 5:28. First downs 7 to 1… .
Field position flipped with change of possession and UT starts at own 38.

LT VINCE VANCE INJURED
The Bulldogs’ third starter at the position this year is down at the 8:28 mark of second quarter. 3 trainers looking at him. Looks like right leg. Not sure whether its ankle or kne but replay makes it look like knee. Not good… . Clint Boling in now at LT.

Why does Stafford take a knee when the defense jumps offside? I believe its a free play so why not run the play called-it might be a long gainer and if not they would still get the five yard penalty.

The play calling in this game is horrible! As dedicated to his coaching as he is, CMR needs to look for new coordinators next year or they will cost him his job. Also, for as much fan fair as Stafford gets, he has no touch on the football and has missed on several plays already.

PASS INTERCEPTED BY UT’S ROBERT AYERS
Stafford right to the defensive end on a tricky kind of no-look play faking the wide screen right to KNowshon and throwing back left. Big play… . Georgia now 19 of 21 in red zone this season. Still very good but ruins chance to go up four scores.

GEORGIA 13, TENNESSEE 7
Dogs have let the Vols back into it. Three plays after Stafford’s interception, UT QB Nick Stephens hits Danarius Moore with a 60-yard pass — beating Prince Miller — down inside Georgia’s 5. UT scores on a pass on third-and-two.
Richard Samuel mishandles kickoff return and gets plowed under at Georgia’s own 3… .
Very reminiscent of 2006 except Georgia was scoring TDs in the first half of that one. Talk about a momentum swap.

Stafford is awful—at what point is he going to hit a man in stride. Offensive line is awful—at what point are they going to open a hole for Knowshon. Vince Vance going down is big trouble for the Dawgs. Pass rush is awful—is this the best we can do after 2 weeks to prepare. Bobo still can’t call a game past the first series. This game should have been over after the first three possessions—but Stafford’s execution, the line’s run blocking and Bobo’s ridiculous “gotta out smart ‘em” play calling are keeping the Vols in the game. MoMass just got smashed on the sideline—Stafford is going to get someone killed.

Was Richard Samuels the same guy who was crying all week about playing more and he just cost his team field position by letting a kick off go right through his legs!!! Wow, this team is imploding right before my eyes. I wish someone will tell the offensive coaches to just let Stafford throw the ball to spread Tenn out and then use Moreno. These wasted running plays are horrible. This Georgia team is not that good and as a fan I know a good football team when i see one and Georgia is an ok team at best. If this game was at Tenn, we would lose.

oooooooooooooh that last TD was sweet. I love stickin’ it to Philly for calling that timeout on the other end of the field. I mean, I know it was the by the book play, but it’s still pretty sweet to go 97 yards and it flipped the momentum back in our side.
That said, we need to finish drives better and keep Matthew from getting killed back there. Tennessee’s defense has to be getting tired out there, so I say lets feed ‘em a lot of Knowshon in the 2nd half.
Nice to see the penalties going our way for a change.

GEORGIA 20, TENNESSEE 7 Well, for once the Dogs saw penalties work against the other guys… .
Georgia goes 97 yards in 9 plays in 2:08 to score on Stafford’s 9-yard TD pass to Mohamed Massaquoi. …
Key on the scoring drive was to personal foul calls against the Vols. The first one was questionable against UT safety Demetrice Morley for a head-to-head hit on MoMass. The second was a no-brainer on cornerback DeAngelo Willingham for throwing down Demiko Goodman out of bounds… .
Head-to-head hits are a “point of emphasis” in the SEC this season. The head of officials told us writers that at SEC Football Media Days before the season. Indeed, MoMass was temporarily shaken up on the play. But he shook it off, jumped up and down to re-energize the crowd and got the last laugh on the TD… .
Georgia gets ball back to open second half so that was a big momentum grabber after Dogs lost it there for a while… .
Get this: It was the Dogs’ third 90-plus yard scoring drive this season… .
Vols took a knee so it’s halftime. I’ll get you some stats after I take a brief break.

Game should already be out of reach. Our ineptitude on offense in the redzone is ridiculous. Game could easily be 35-0. Even though UGA will win any way, The refs are killin UT. That helmet to helmet was clearly helmet to shoulder pad, and the pass interference in the 2nd quarter was not even close. Georgia will probably win easily, but without the that helmet to helmet call it is probably 13-7 maybe 16-7. That TD probably won it for the Dogs. The only way UT comes back is if Stafford throws another dumb INT, like he did in the first half.

The first series proves my point to whats wrong with this Georgia team. they are trying to run it down Tenn throats when they dont have the offensive line to do it. AJ Green better get his act together, instead of cutting the ball up taking some contact to get a first down, he heads out to the sideline and they come up one yard short. Everybody is telling him how great he is, he better start to make some plays. Fire Bobo and hire Lane Kiffin as an offensive coordinator. Fire Willie and hire ?????? UT’S ERIC BERRY INTERCEPTS STAFFORD PASS IN END ZONE
Yet another botched fade pass attempt by Georgia and this one goes badly awry. Comes on third-and-goal at the 6 so Georgia had a sure 3 coming. WR Michael Moore ends up on the ground in left flat and Berry catches it standing alone in end zone. Unwisely takes it out but ends up breaking tackles for 54 yard return.

Exactly my point!!!!! Fire BoBo more fade routs that havent worked the entire game. Stafford is overrated and has no fundamentals as a quaterback. This game tells says a lot about Georgia coaches and their personnel. This is a quaterback with two weeks to prepare, coaches with two weeks to look at film. I am just shocked at all of these failed attempts at the fade routs and why the coaches keep calling them. What about the play call before the fade rout Mathew Stafford up the middle for 0 yards, a wasted down. Florida, LSU, and maybe Auburn will destroy UGA, and I am a UGA fan, but this team looks like they are poorly coached and not prepared and because Tenn sucks, they may pull this one out, but maybe I am typing to fast!

UT picks Stafford in the end zone. I’ll repeat what I said earlier. Stafford is inconsistent, tending toward the big mistake in the big game situation. His lack of execution and Bobo’s playcalling are keeping UT in this game.
On a brighter note, the penalties are down. However, UGA is finding another way to keep UT in this game. That’s the downside of being a Dawg fan—UGA will find a way to let the opposition stay in the game until the very end. If it’s not penalties, it’s Martinez soft zone D—if it’s not those, it’s Bobo’s horrendous play calling in the red zone.
Nice play call out of the time out, Martinez. No excuse for a rookie QB to do this to an SEC defense. Coach Willie’s prevent zone is getting worked by perhaps the worst offense in the SEC.
Again no pass rush—UT scores a TD throwing vs. the zone. Watch out Dawg fans—I don’t like how this one is going.

GEORGIA 20, TENNESSEE 14
Say this this for the Vols. They capitalize on their opportunities. After the interception, Tennessee goes 46 yards in 7 plays and scored on a 13-yard pass from Stephens to Lucas Taylor on third-and-8. Taylor had a 14-yard catch on third-and-nine earlier in the drive… .
Prince Miller hurt his right shoulder on an earlier play and Bryan Evans was in as sub. Don’t know if it was Evans’ man but Taylor was wide open in back left of end zone after Stephens scrambled left out of the pocket.
Incredible that the Vols are making a game of this considering the statistical disparity. Turnovers are just killer.

I tell you why Eric C. anyone that knows football can see that UT can not stop us. UT will not get any more gifts this game. Good teams find a way to win and bad teams find a way to lose. UGA will win!

thank god the kicker has been money. If not for that I would be through two bottles of Southern Comfort instead of just the one.

GEORGIA 23, TENNESSEE 14
Bulldogs settle for a 41-yard field from PK Blair Walsh at the 14:55 mark of the third quarter.
Key play on the drive was a 24-yard catch and run by fullback Shaun Chapas on first-and-20 at the Georgia 32. Another personal foul on Tennessee’s Gerald Williams, who got caught punching Knowshon Moreno on the ground… .
But Vols pushed Georgia back after it got down to the 30. UT defense playing great considering the time its spent on the field and the yardage it has given up.

Georgia coaches never seems to have the players ready for games. Either the plays we run are so complex that it takes a genious to execute or Bobo just doesn’t get it. At what point do you stop calling the same play? i.e. STOP throwing the fade route if you guys aren’t on the same page!!!!!

I take that back about the penalties. Once again they come back to haunt us. UGA has to step up and make a statement. I dread the LSU and UF matchups if we continue to play like this. Now way this one should be close. UF beat them 30-6. UGA has got to improve if they are going to finish with a respectable record.

Please fire Mike Bobo.4th year in a row with a stable of running backs and they throw 4 fade routes inside the ten for 0 points and 1 pick. They end the third quater with the same formation and the same fake toss to the weak side for the same result -yards.The score should be something like 49-14. If they don’t fire him at least take the play calling away. Then maybe the nation will quit laughing at the dawgs.

Let’s hope Martinez applies for a coaching job and finally gets one. Then we can hire Kirby Smart as our DC. Did we lose one of our offensive linemen? He went out but did he come back in?

ATMDOG, it’s not UT that’s stopping us!! Look, I’m just p** because this game should have been over a long time ago…we continue to underachieve on offense and make stupid mistakes in the secondary. The ASU game should have been 41-3 and this game should have been 34-0.

So what was that about the dogs not having the beef up front to run it down the Vols throat? They are doing it right now and looking great doing it.
Maybe they should look into doing that a little more often, and inside the red zone instead of pussyfooting around so much.
No more fades please.

I will happily take a W in this one, but I am disappointed that the guys were not fired up to play. We should have punched in at least 2-3 more in this one. UGA is a better team than it has shown and have to play with more intensity going forward. That means no more stupid penalties, no more dropped passes and no more stupid mistakes by Stafford. GO DAWGS!

Everyone please chill out and take a look at the stats. 500 Yards of offense, UT def one of the best in the country. I agree we need to stop killing ourselfs but this is a very young and talented team. That last drive was awesome! Killed time and got some points.

It looks like we will win this game as Georgia grinds more clock here in the fourth quarter, but a dawgfan, I am worried about the direction of this program and the lack of dicipline on and off the field with this team. Mike Bobo I am sure is a nice guy, but he cant call plays effectively. Willie Martinez, I think the defense players are just not as good as we originally thought. As I am writing this, UGA runs another toss sweep, which is so predictable.Blair Walsh is a stud field goal kicker. Guys we have Vandy next week and we should win that one as well but who knows what Georgia will do. When we go to LSU at night and Florida at the cocktail party we will lose both games by double digits. Sorry guys byt we just cant keep plaing like this and having clueless coaches to beat those two teams. I will say I am rooting for LSU tonight, I hate the Gators!

Face it you won the Arizon game 27-10 and USC just Blew them out 28-0. Now UT stays in the game with you until the 4th, Hell UCLA beat them. The Dawgs are just a little better than average.

How do you run an offense and have 6 or more red zone visits and Moreno has no touchdowns. Just another mark against Bozo.

Well another ugly win. We has a great opportunity to really shoot up in the polls but it wouldnt surprise me if we dropped to 12 or 13. Now Vandy lost today and they will be fired up to spoil our homecomoning. UGa commits 11 penalties this is very disturbing.

The season is far enough along to safely state that the Dawgs were indeed overrated going into this season. UGA simply has been underwhelming in almost every game.

What’s up Dawgs? I just turned to the UT Georgia game (after USCvASU).
Congrates on the win. It looks like both our teams are working their way back up.
Well we have a common opponent to compare now, ASU. Looks like we are a little better than you on both sides of the ball.
I hope everyone else loses 1 or 2 more and USC UGA get to play that game we should have seen last year. I’ll check in from time to time.
GOOD LUCK

Hey Eric C,
We played ASU at Tempe and absolutely drubbed them…score should have been much worse. Not to mention…Carpenter wasn’t 100% today. USC got 390 yds today…we got over 400 yds when they were healthier. Sorry fellow…but I’m not as impressed as you with USC.

eric face it, Georgia will need to play better defence and learn to score in the redzone to beat any ranked team. They are winning against average teams and have lost against the only ranked team they have played. They won’t be able to play with LSU, Texas, Penn State, MIZZ,USC, Ohio State, OU, Florida.

Fire Mike Bozo! He has got to be the worst play caller in college football. He should be calling plays at a Division II or III, not at UGA
