Fulmer again looks to Georgia for cure

Phillip Fulmer is catching all kinds of heat in Knoxville. Again.

It seems like every other year at least the Tennessee nation is nipping at Fulmer’s heels. I thought it couldn’t get any worse than when I followed Georgia up there last year. Virtually every paper that covers the Vols and several dot-coms as well had columnists writing about why Fulmer ought to be fired.

To Fulmer’s credit, he and his staff used all that negative press as motivational fuel and they absolutely steamrolled the Bulldogs, 35-14. That has kind of been Fulmer’s M.O. in recent years. The Vols haven’t won an SEC championship since their national title year of 1998 but Fulmer seems to whip out a win over a higher-ranked Georgia team any time he needs one.

And boy does he need one now. The sniping has reached fever pitch as the Vols limp into Sanford Stadium with a 2-3 record. But they’ve definitely underachieved this season.

So you think Tennessee has what it takes to get well against the Dogs again this year?

One other thing: Tennessee is a class program, one of the most storied and successful in the SEC. But there is one thing I don’t like at all about the Vols. It’s those uniforms.

Saturday the Vols will be sporting their new road look which, in my opinion, is a slight improvement over the old one. But it’s all relative. They’ve reintroduced the old orange pants from the Johnny Majors days. That’s better than the old white-on-white they used to wear on the road. They looked like ice cream men in pads. And at least you can read the numbers and names now.

Onto some links:

Mark Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald tells us why slot receiver Michael Moore could be in for a big game against Tennessee… .

Seems like today was the day for the Tennessee papers to write about quarterback Nick Stephens. There are stories in the Knoxville News-Sentinel and the Nashville Tennessean… .

David Hale of the Macon Telegraph asks Ten Questions about the Tennessee game… .

Chris Dufresne of the L.A. Times tells us why the Big 12 is the most powerful conference this season… .

In case you’re into such things, here’s a website called Awful Announcing that tells you what broadcaster are doing what games and offers a blog forum to voice your opinion. CBS has sent Craig Bolerjack and Steve Beuerlein to Athens.

Reasons for a Dawg win: 1. A week of rest 2. A better offense 3. No Cutcliffe Dawgs win UGA 28 UT 14

Need to come out early and punch them in the mouth just like Bama did to us. Pressure the young QB early. Seeing that this is his 1rst huge SEC game, pressure will be too much. Defense needs to step it up BIG.

Martinez has yet to prove he is an SEC defensive coordinator, he is soft and his defense plays with no fire or passion. Since Ellerbee has been injured no one has stepped up to be a leader on the defense, I had very high hopes for the DAWGS this year, however even on offense we are weak and have no plan. So until we replace BooBoo and Martinez we will continue to win 10 games a year but we will have no RINGS……

I certainly think and I am encouraged that my Vols defense can stop Uga’s offense. I think we can surprise the Dawgs and Dawg nation once again. UGA reminds me of the Clemson team with all the hype and expectations then for some uncanny reason has problems in achieving their goals. Rocky Top should reach the 500 plateau in Athens this weekend. GO VOLS!!!!! ROCKY TOP TODAY! ROCKY TOP TOMORROW! ROCKY TOP FOREVER!

Let the side show begin and step right on in! Come one! Come all!. Watch BOBO the Clown and the freak show of No Show No Mo as they try to hurdle ole Rocky Top and perform unexplainable mind boggling feats. Special performance by Willie Vanillie with his soft smoke and mirrors act. Watch a clean cut nice guy turn into a mean cursing sailor before your own eyes and not remembering of what he said. Well looks like the Clemson folk are looking at Will Muschamp as a possible replacement of Tommy Bowden. Its another great Georgia resource that may have slipped away from our football program. Now we may continue to wonder ” What might have been?”.

I agree w/ Jeff. We’ve seen too many years under Martinez w/ the same tendencies. To large of lead in the 1st half w/ no adjustments until half time. By then the lead is too large to overcome in the SEC. In the short time that Van Gorder was DC, he never allowed the other team to get a large lead. It always seemed to be a reachable score even on typical lethargic UGA offensive performance. One TD & 3 FGs could beat 15 pts or less. Maybe Van Gorder had better personnel, but the knock was then that they were too slow. What has all this top recruiting & speed gotten us?

Uniorms or their color does not a player make.UGA should know that by now. While UT has not won the SECCG it has been there a few times since 98.Close but no cigar.Perhaps Fulmer is good enough to get them there, but can’t get it done for the championship. And who says UT will wear orange pants? Didn’t they wear all white at Auburn this year?I would like to see UGA don silver jerseys with red or black pants at some point.

Chip, I cringed when I saw Craig Bolerjack and Steve Buerelein are announcing this game for CBS. IMO, this is the WORST crew CBS has to call a game. I may watch this game with the mute button engaged. The analysis is awful and they somehow find a way to botch the players names.

Anyway, GO DAWGS!

With Bobo’s play calling, and Martinez soft defense, we will probably make the Vols look like the Title contenders. If the Dawgs do not step up in this one, someone needs to take a hard look at what is going on. We supposedly have all of these great recruiting classes which doesn’t seem to translate to our play on the field. Yes, we have had a rash of injuries, that is part of the game, and then come all of the meltdowns and excuses. If , we are, in fact a legitimate program, then step up and whip the Vols Arsses!!

First, I’m no Vols fan, heII I don’t care for most of the SUCK EAST CONFERENCE.

I think Bama and LSU are good teams, Bama is still a year or two away from being a top 5 program, but LSU is first class; the rest, not so much.

I hope that TN puts a whoopin on the puppies like Bama did, and don’t coast in the 2nd half, BURY THEM.

CMR and the team seem ok; it’s the F-ing puppy fans I can’t stand. I can’t wait til their 8-3 and making BS excuses why they should leap over a team from another conference because, well they play in the Suck East.

I’m praying for 51-14, maybe that will shut their load mouth fans up.

Tennessee has a lot of good athletes and they may well play Georgia tough. However, this game has developed a recent history of lopsided wins. Georgia had several in a row and now Tennessee has had two in a row.

The loss of Sturdivant has created a situation on the offensive line that should finally be resolving. I believe Georgia may finally have the breakout game we need.

Where is Altamaha Dog? No hear since CMR was outflanked by Saban….well, I thought this would be the case. Dogs get drilled by Alabama, and everyone goes quiet.

I guess you will have to wait another 27 years before you have a shot at another national title.

I see UT finally stepping up and beating the Dogs 31-14. Fulmer finally gets his offense clicking, Dodo will have not clue what sort of offense to run (i.e. Alabama) and Martini will continue to allow his defense to run up the penalties.

Hello,

I had to crank out the blog really fast this morning before I had to get my daughter somewhere and that resulted in a couple of typos. I wouldn’t call them “major errors” but they are errors indeed and I apologize for that. Obviously I know how to spell Chris Dufresne’s name and I know the difference in plural and singular. Unfortunately these blogs are raw and nobody proofs behind them so things like that get through sometimes. But fortunately we have people like you that point these things out. So thanks for that.

Take care and thanks for visiting the blog.

The importance of this game for the Dawgs can’t be overestimated folks. It’s against a rival. It’s against a division foe. It’s against a team that has whooped our butts the past two years.

Most importantly, though, if the Dawgs can’t roll over a Tennessee team that is at its weakest point in years, at home, then UGA does not deserve to be ranked where it’s at. If this ends up being a close game, UGA should forget about any national respect and should fall in the polls again. Florida will rightfully be the east division favorite.

And can all the apologists spare me in advance with their excuses? “This team could easily be 4-1… UT always plays its best game against us… They will be playing for Fulmer’s job… We are all banged up and playing back ups… Anyone can win in the SEC…” etc, etc.

We have out-recruited UT the past few years handily. We are ranked at or near the top 10 - UT is not. UT lost to freaking UCLA for pete’s sake. They are starting a rookie QB on the road. We are at least as healthy as they are. Their coach is on the hot seat. Cutcliffe is gone and so are all the old excuses.

No excuses, Dawgs. This is a game we should - must - win by at least 10 points. Anything less will hurt UGA in the national picture.

Chip: Just ignore nincompoops like the Bannerherald guy - it just gives them pleasure for their pathetic existence to be acknowledged. Remember: if you stand around arguing with an idiot, no one watching can tell who the idiot really is.

Chip, in your article published 10-10-08 you say that UGA lost to Auburn 24-7 in 2005. That game actually happened in 2004, the year Auburn went undefeated. Auburn won a nail-biter against UGA 31-30 in 2005. Kind of kills the whole “UGA gets blown out in one half every year for the last 4 years” thing.

Can we all agree that LSU needs to win?

I like the idea of Vandy winning, but the conventional wisdom is since they are ahead right now, to pull for that upset. Prabably the best thing would be that MissState puts up a long battle.

We wouldn’t jump OK, but TX we could..

This would be a good weekend for Okie State to get that big upset for the next few years out of thier system.

It’s true that the Vols have had our number. It’s also true that the Dawgs tend to have a lack of intensity in a game or three every year. Obviously, Bama was the recipient of the “perfect storm” first half and could coast to a fairly easy win against our defenseless dawgs. So, one brain-fart game in the books. Let’s hope that it’s the only one this season. No team on our remaining schedule will be beaten without our best effort.

Chip, any news on how well A White can block? Isn’t he more of a Shannon Sharpe hybrid than a Ben Watson freak of nature?

Hey Chip, listen dude, I want to tell you I think you do a great job with the blog and with you’re coverage of the dawgs. I really appreciate your insight and practice updates. You’re doing a great job, keep up the good work. Here’s my concern about Saturday, I hope we dopn’t play down to level of our opponent. We seem to lack a killer instinct sometimes and it kills us. Richt is a great coach but sometimes we seem to lack motivation and focus. If we’re going to be a consistent national power, a top 5 team contending for national champoinships we better start competing with the Bama’s and LSU’s and we need to beat the South Carolina’s and Vandy’s and Kentucky’s like a drum. We need to hang about 40 on UT Saturday and keep them to about 10. Willie is obviously a favorite of Richt’s but honestly the defense is not as good as it was under Van Gorder. Every year Willie has had someone hang 28, 31, and even more points on us. This really needs to change. The whole defensive attitude seems off kilter sometimes. Offensively I think Bobo is doing ok but we are kind predictable on occasion. CMR said we should be even better next year whether Stafford comes back or not (by the way, my son is a student at UGA and he says he hears that Stafford is leaning to staying next year). We need to get an offensive line and a defense that can cover and get after the QB if we’re going to be in the national title picture.

The offensive and defensive lines for Georgia are soft. I can’t believe in a big game like Alabama, we were totally destroyed on our home field. That should NEVER happen! It is 4 years in a row we have been blown out in a half. West Virginia - 2005 Season - 28-0 after the 1st quarter! Tennessee in 2006 - outscored 38-9 in the 2nd half. Tennessee in 2007 - 28-0 at the half. Now 2008, and Alabama smokes us at home 31-0 at the half. 2 of these embarassments have been in Athens. Unless Georgia decides to be tougher and smarter, they will lose at least 3 more games - maybe more. Kentucky is tougher on defense than we are. Coach Richt needs to evaluate everything - we should never be pushed around like that. Do you think LSU, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, would ever be down 31-0 at the half on their home field to ANYONE!

Okay. Most of you Dawgs have been waiting two years for the ice cream men to lay an egg. Will the third time be the charm..? All the stars are aligned in your favor. A new OC that hasn’t learned the SEC ain’t Villanova or Fordham, nor does it play a Villanova or Fordham except on breather weeks. A newly inserted QB which may, may resemble a Matthew Stafford that watched Joe T III muck up things the last time UT came to Athens. A HC that many see as a lameduck on a platter in some Chinese monosodium glutamate eatry. GA needs a big win today and not a nail biter. I seriously think we should be able to win 34-13. Something like that. If not,why not? Tenn. is not on our level this year judging by all their games. THis is an off year for them. If they beat us today we will have to contribute to it by turnovers and penalties. If that happens then blame the coaches.

I just got through watching the special on ESPN about Muschamp. I wonder if Texas would consider trading him to us for Willie the Weasel and the rest of the defensive coaching staff? If that doesn’t work we will throw in Richt for good measure. Muschamp has passion which the UGA staff is void of. Oh well, I guess anyone can dream!

These folks are serious about this fire Fulmer website. I wonder supposing Tennesee wins today in Athens, how many of those 2300 signatures will be erased by midnight? Seems they have forgotten about that SEC championship game in 2007.

Headed out to the game, hope i don’t need my seat today, hope to be standing up celebrating UGA touchdowns. Didn’t realize how hard it was and how uncomfortable it was until the Alabama game a few weeks ago. Hopefully it will be a stand-up day!! No sitting down. Most of all hope both teams come away without any injuries.

Not worried about this game today. Everything works in Georgia’s favor. Most importantly they are anxious to take to the field and prove that they are a better team than what they showed against BAMA. DAWGZ ROLLL!!! Rennie Curran will be the next president of the United States of Bulldog nation!!

Change is all the rage. Hope is but a dream. I know the Volunteer fan base Atop Rocky is looking for more than has been delivered since 1998. Can’t blame them, but yet, there are the loyalists to CPF. One being Peyton Manning. Don’t know if you caught his chat segment with the sideline babe at the AU-UT game, but he basically encouraged the fan base to stick with CPF…I think after Mannings playing days are over, he’ll find his way back to Tennessee in some coaching capacity…But as far as CPF goes, well, not my call. I continue to back the TEAM….
