UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Where’s the passion for Dogs, Vols?

I have to admit, I’m a little surprised at the lack of passion I’m sensing from Georgia fans for Saturday’s game against Tennessee.

Yes, I realize that the Vols come to Sanford Stadium on Saturday with very modest 2-3 record. They’ve lost to a very poor UCLA team. They’ve looked fairly anemic on offense throughout the season, especially in the last two games, a 14-12 loss at Auburn and a 13-9 win over Northern Illinois this past weekend.

But this is, after all, still Tennessee. This is the team that absolutely throttled the Bulldogs last two times they played. This is the team that jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first half last season after putting up 37 points in the second half the year before that. This is the team that effectively derailed any chance Georgia would have of playing in “the big game” last season because they bumped it out of the SEC championship game. Big Orange, Rocky Top and all that.

I think the players recognize the magnitude of this matchup. How else can you explain Georgia’s Clint Boling refusing to say anything but, “We’re excited for Tennessee and we’re ready for the challenge” in interviews this week. Other players aren’t as blatant about it but they’re clearly choosing their words carefully so as none end up on a Tennessee bulletin board.

Then there’s Tennessee tailback Arian Foster. Getting ready to become the Vols’ all-time leading rusher, he’s declining all interviews unless they are conducted in “Pterodactyl,” a made-up dinosaur language. So far no interviews have been granted.

Strange times indeed. But the reality is a loss Saturday probably knocks Georgia out of everything. No SEC title game, no BCS bowl.

As Foster told a Nashville Tennessean reporter: “Veeeeek! Veeeeek! Veeeeek!”

And how!

So where does the Tennessee rivalry rank for you? Is it somewhere behind Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech? Does Spurrier being at South Carolina trump Phillip Fulmer on Rocky Top?

Here’s some links to go with that thought:

Here’s one of the stories about Arian Foster and his Pterodactyl speak.… .

By the way, two Tennessee players this week were suspended for the Georgia game… .

According to Joe Person in Columbia, South Carolina’s Eric Norwood got a surprising batch of brownies delivered to his car from a not so loving fan recently… .

In honor of Bobby Petrino and Tommy Tuberville meeting again in Saturday’s matchup between Auburn and Arkansas, The Birmingham News revisits “Jetgate” from five years ago.

Dawgs better be ready. Although not very optimistic, the fans up here can see the new Vol QB Nick Stephens leading the team to an upset in Athens and Philopottomas playing the spoiler the rest of the season to save his J-O-B…

Dawgs will be ready. Still a lot to play for this season. Anyone who thinks the dawgs are out of it are crazy. IF we take care of buisness and win out, things will fall into place. I would love a rematch with BAMA in the SEC Championship game. LETS GO DAWGS!

What did you expect when one team is clearly bad and the other has been exposed as being merely adequate against inferior competition and terrible against really good competition?

If we take Tenn for granted, we could be in for a very rude awakening! Nobody is the SEC is a gimme any more and Mark Richt better make that point to our Dawgs! wake up youngsters and smell the roses! the upcoming schedule does not allow you to take a week off! Get it in gear and be the team the original AP Poll for this year thought you were!

Everything being equal, Georgia should absolutely crush Tennessee by 3 or more touchdowns in this year’s game, but this is college football, where anything can happen and sometimes does.

An awful lot depends on how the Dawgs respond to the Bama loss. Are they crushed because their national title hopes are likely gone? There was a time when the prospect of playing for an SEC championship was more than enough … is it still? Perhaps the Dawg coaches (and fans) have allowed too much talk of the MNC to intrude on the reality of the SEC East chase. We will see if the Dawgs can pull their heads together, or whether a lesser Volunteers team will upset them for the third consecutive season.

it’s only natural that there would be a dip in fan excitement after a disappointing UGA loss and knowing that UT is having a very bad year.

still, i’m pumped for DAWG football and some sweet revenge. i think UGA will come out fast and eventually win this game by at least 25 points.

For me the rivalry against Tenn. comes in at 4th behind Fla. AUB. And GT. Dawgs should be ready after an embarassing loss to ALA. If Stafford has time to throw the ball shouldn’t be close at all, if not look for a long day and whoever makes the least mistakes will win. Better be ready though Tenn. always brings a good game to Athens.

I am VERY nervous about this game. On paper, we should win. But we should have won the past two years, too….and we got killed. WIN OUT??? After what Bama did to us, can you imagine what is going to happen in LSU? Can our lines stop Florida’s? Vandy will be HARD. I’m not that worried about Auburn because they can’t score. But they can stop us from scoring. Frankly, Yech may be the next toughest game on our schedule after LSU and Florida. I am very, very nervous about our season.

This is a statement game and the fans need to be ready for a battle. UT has as much talent as anyone in the SEC and they are fighting for their lives. I hate UT as much as UF as I remember all the Peyton Manning years. It wasn’t that long ago we tore the goalposts down in celebration of finally beating UT. I hate their fight song, I hate the retina burning color of Knoxville on Saturday, and I want UT to lose every game from here on out. It better start on Saturday or it won’t be very long before UGA is looking at an 8-4 year after being rated #1. Let’s go Dawg Fans!

Dawgs better be fired up for Tennessee. Don’t ever count UT or Fulmer out. Too many times Tennessee has looked weak in the early season and then played their best game against Georgia. Thank goodness Cutcliffe is gone as he had our defense figured out easily the past two years. I believe it was ‘04 when UT had lost a couple of games coming into Athens & we were undefeated and had just blown LSU out. We came out flat & UT beat us. Players & fans alike need to keep the intensity up for this one.

Living in Chattanooga makes the vols the bitter rival! After the last two years, this game is HUGE for the DAWGS. TN plays best when given up on. DAWGS better be and I believe they will be ready to take care of business. Lots of football left to be played…SEC Championship and National Championship still there for the DAWGS. Must destroy the Hounds and Phat Phil this weekend. Win the toss, take the ball and score on the first possession.

When you get smacked down like we did against Alabama it is hard to get that excitement back. I had 25 people over at my house. I spent the afternoon grilling Johnsonville bratwurst & Italian sausage and burgers. People brought wings, potato salad, chips dip, etc. We had Coors, Leinenkugle Sunset Wheat, everything. Then I spent most of the first half in the kitchen cleaning because I could not watch the smackdown. I had guests consoling me. Everyone but the Alabama fans left the party at halftime. I then had Alabama people coming up to me with my son’s stuffed bulldog going arf arf arf. This is not something you recover from in 10 days. This one goes strait to the bone. Will I watch the game Saturday? Yes. Am I pumped about it right now? No. This team played weak against GSU, vanilla against CMU, weak against SC, well against ASU and pathetic against Ala. I will follow them all the way, but I can’t get excited about them right now.

Make no mistake, UT is one team I would like us to not only beat but completely humiliate.

As long as our thin linebacker corps can stuff the run, I think we’ll beat them solidly. It will take some fantastic heroics for UT to keep this one close. But playing the Dawgs seems to bring out the best in them. They’ve been underperforming so far this season, a game like this can change that.

One problem is, with the Vols struggling like they are, we’ll be punished in the polls if the game is at all close.

In fact, one loss Georgia or SEC team is very much in the mix for the NC game. look at the teams ahead in the poll, Oklahoma which I think is overrated will play Texas this week, Missouri will probably play both , Alabama and LSU will play each other, USC had already a loss. so I think its absolutely a distraction and have no meaning to talk about the NC game, the media love talking about it to fill air time. Anyway about Tennessee, it puzzles me how they got the best of Georgia the past 2 years. as I said our Dummass DC Martinez is just very easy to be figured out by Tennessee, like Tennessee knows all the D signals of Georgia. here is an interesting comparison, Tennessee had absolutely way better team than Tennessee now in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004, Tennessee lost to Georgia in all these years except 2004 where the score was 19-14 and if it wasn’t for a busted coverage Georgia should have won it. anyway our DC was vangorden, compare him it to martinez. Georgia now has better offense, athlete in General and still got destroyed by very average Tennessee team the past 2 year is just unbelievable. Here is my suggestion if coach richt doesn’t want to demote Martinez I can understand but when we playing Tennessee let coach garner put the defensive plan, just for that game because it is clear that Martinez for some reason can NOT beat Tennessee. Georgia should destroy Tennessee this weekend not because we are a better team its because Tennessee is pathetic on offense and hopefully they will stay that way. go dawgs

Personally, I hate, hate, HATE Tennessee most (Tech comes in a close second). This game will not be a blow out. It will be close as it usually is. Stafford will have to be on and the line must give him a few seconds to check down receivers. Against SC and Bama, it was like they were having a footrace to see who gets to the QB first. Tennessee has a good defense and a great Dline. I said before that we can match up with Bama in the skill positions, but the lines can’t block or pressure the QB. It better change this Saturday or Arian Foster and Co. will just run, run and run some more. TN can’t pass, but they won’t need to. I have a bad feeling about this game, but I hope I am dead wrong.

Dawgs have several weaknesses:

I’m not sure about the Chemistry of this team yet.

No pressure on any QB , YET.

Young, jelling offensive line.

Not a Dawg Defensive back within 10 yards of any pass caught by the other team.

60 minute intensity missing.

As a TN fan, there is no passion for this GA/TN game this year because there is nothing to be excited about as a TN fan. Our program is declining, we cannot score on a high school team, and the media is just piling it on. While the TN D is pretty solid, not much expected from the offense or special team. I expect GA to win pretty easily….Go Vols!

By DirtyDawg

And just how would you expect Georgia fans to react given the results of the Alabama game? I mean the air was pretty much let out of our balloon - over-inflated as it may well have been - and we’re concerned that just maybe we’re not all that good and until we have a chance to check it out - in this case against a desperate Tennessee team - we’ll keep our composure, thank you very much.

Last time I checked David Cutcliff and the Ainge kid ain’t at Tennessee anymore, so we’ll see what happens. They’ve got a good defense - leading the conference - and we’ve had out problems against good defenses. So we’ll have to keep our passions in check until kickoff - or at least the pre-game drunk-out and Dawg Walk - and see. Meanwhile the players had better have it together even if we don’t. After all the fans were into the Alabama game from the beginning and we know how that turned out -now it’s the players turn to get off to a better start. I just hope they aren’t too tired from the penalty penalties to play hard for 60 minutes.

Tennessee always starts off the year 1-0, because we know UGAG is on the schedule. It wouldn’t matter if we were 0-4 when we meet the puppies. We know we’ll win. Last year, TN was very average and got lucky in more than a few wins, yet we bounced the leg humpers from one endzone to the other. Get ready for the UGAG Bandwagon to lose a couple of wheels.

My take on the lack of passion is that a lot of people are distracted right now regarding the country’s financial crisis, the election, etc. Not that we have lost any passion for our DAWGS, rather we are in some sad times for other reasons.

Chip, From which fans do you “sense” a lack of passion from on a Wednesday when everybody is worried about their economies? I woke up at 2AM this morning worried about the game. The players are the ones that have to be ready to play. Fans were passionate against Bama but the players and coaches were not prepared. You’re just writing fodder for conversation I’m sure.

Chip, I believe you’ve pointed out the elephant in the room. We all secretly wanted the Dawgs to go undefeated against the hardest schedule in college football. So, there is a bit of let down for us because that was our pipe dream. Sure, the players’ and coaches’ goals of winning the SEC east and going to the SEC champ game are still in tact…but as UT showed last year…you can win the east and go to the SEC champ game and not be relevant at all on the national scene. So….if the Dawgs come out and play with passion, the fans will be right there behind them by the end of the first play. But, if the dawgs look like the team we saw against Bama….it will be tough to be more excited that the team.

This is the reasons the rankings should come out a month into the season. Teams change from season to season. This is so not the same Georgia team that beat up on a very weak Hawaii last year. We knew the offensive and defensive lines were very weak. We do know that Tennessee is huge up front and if they go with a power running game and “butter fingers” can hold on to the ball at tailback for the Vols, it is going to be a long day in Athens again. Come on Coach Martinez, how bout making a team one dimensional for a change.

UGA 34-13. UT is down and I just don’t see any chance of them winning unless the Dawgs turn the ball over several times.

And my fellow LSU fans on here that are confident that we are going to beat the Gators are not being realistic in my mind. The Swamp is a tough place and we have to control Teebow and Harvin as well as be able to run the ball. It can done but it won’t be easy. We certainly can’t play like we did 2 years ago when Russell fumbled on their half-yard line.

Dawg fans keep whining about Alabama. Geez people, Georgia played with skill and heart in that game in the second half and made it a contest. There was a legitimate reason Saban was ticked after the game – his boys who had kicked butt in the first half got theirs kicked in the second.

UGA should have a good season. We’ve got the horses, the coaches and the motivation … get to the SEC championship game and hopefully a rematch with Alabama. Oh, and I want to make it two in a row against Florida real bad.

I don’t think this is a lack of passion. I think it is fans being cautious about expectations because of the last 2 games vs. Tenn. and the recent debacle against Alabama. I, for one, know that I will be just as passionate and cheering just as loud at this game as I ever have, but I’m certainly not going to talk any smack or get overconfident; that can always bite you later. Don’t confuse rational behavior leading up to the game for a lack of passion about it.

I think the Tennessee game is right up there in important games for Georgia. Now granted, after UGA getting murdered by Bama and Tenn looking struggling against a middle of the road MAC team, it is only natural that the game is going to be as hyped as usual. I do believe Tennessee has an advantage coming into the game. Georgia has to win in order to keep any slim hope of a BCS championship alive. Tennessee is playing for pride, this is definetely to me a set-up game for Georgia. What happened last year? Tennessee and Knoxville was getting ready to ride Fulmer out of town and what happened? They destroyed us. Georgia needs to get off to a quick start, deep pass to green or something like that. We don’t need to be hanging around with these guys come the fourth quarter. Lets have a good game and end this 2 year loosing streak to Tennessee. Go Dawgs!

Chip,
The Tennessee rivalry is tops in my book. Nine straight years of beat downs while I was in middle, high school, and college by a miserable group of tang-colored orange people playing that horrible backwoods fight song is enough to make anyone sick. With that said I have an awful feeling about this game. I was listening to Wes Durham talk about this game on the radio yesterday and he said something like, “If what I think is going to happen in Saturday in Athens, Tennessee could be 8-4 before this is all said and done.” At first I was angry, but then I thought - I have no right to be angry. There is every indication in the world that this is going to be a very tough game to win for the dawgs. UT always has strong, talented athletes in much the way that Alabama does this year. We’ve gotten totally crushed by them for two years in a row.

So perhaps that’s why there is little passion about this game. There are probably a lot of Dawg fans very worried about this game. And with the high expectations for UGA this year and the current state of the Tennessee program, it’s not a huge validation of anything if we win. But if we lose well…

So the “high” to come from the win isn’t all that high and the “low” from the loss could be pretty low. Not to mention that we could just as easily get crushed again.

One pack of rednecks playing another. It should be called the Clampett bowl. This is a setup for UGA because they will turn in another South Carolina-like flat performance for at least 3 qtrs. If UGA does win, it will be by a little and will cause another poll drop. What’s with the UGA fans stating their interest in beating Tech? I think its because they see that they can’t compete in the Almighthy SEC.

Chip, you’re right about the intensity, at least with me. It hasn’t been the same since the blackout, I mean blowout.

I’m still not over the Bama debacle. I don’t have a problem with losing, but, I just can’t stomach our team not showing up; it seems to happen once or twice every year. No reason this team shouldn’t at least be competetive with anyone in the country. UGA coaches still in MY Dawghouse, not that it matters to anyone. We just shouldn’t get blown out, period. It was encouraging to see Richt getting tougher, at least concerning the penalties.

I’m not a fair weather fan but I passed on two tickets to Saturdays game. I also won’t sit inside and waste a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We’re going to the beach with the soon to be two year old. I do wish I could follow it on the radio. We will check out the highlights and hope for the best.

As usual, we will come out flat against Tenn and make a couple of dumb a* penalties and they go up 10-0 or 14-0 in the first quarter. I think we then go on to win maybe 28-27 but we still have massive problems on the Offensive and Defensive lines, we struggle again with stupid penalties and we have a terrible game plan set up by are assistant coaches. BoBoo and Willie(the weasel) should both be embarrassed to look in the mirror. They blame the players for not executing when they give them schemes that look as if they were drawn up in the sand. How about this. Kirby Smart (who is now the defensive co-ordinator for Alabama) was on the staff at Ga. but guess what they had him coaching, running backs. He coached the secondary at LSU the secondary at Miami (pros) he played defense in college but he wasn’t smart enough to coach the defense at Ga. Then there is Muschamp one of the hottest defensive coaches in the country and played at Ga.,do you think Ga. would try to hire him? Forget it he has too much fire and brimstone for Missionary Richt. Muschamp and Smart both coached at some great programs, where did Martinez coach! Who wouldn’t trade the Weasel for either one of them? You would be an idiot not to! Georgias offense is too predictable and their defense is not physical. The only reason GA. wins is because of their superb athletes. If Richt coached at a school without the athletes he has at Georgia he wouldn’t win crap

Chip, what’s the hold up in deciding the SEC TV selections for Oct. 18? Why doesn’t CBS just go ahead & exercise there 6 day option? Does Homecoming have something to do with it?

My guess is CBS doesn’t want to use there 6 day option yet & they have chosen LSU at SC. The next choice goes to ESPN who probably wants our game for that night but we won’t do it because it’s homecoming. If that’s correct then it would be the second (straight) night game. Doesn’t the UGA athletic department about the number of night games per year?

As far as today’s topic goes…Tennessee is our rival that I despise the most! Them having a down year has tempered my enthusiasm a little along with being worried about how this game will turn out. On paper we should wax them BUT they need this game BAD & it’s Tennessee which for some reason always seems to scare our players. If we can get over the Gators hex then surely we can overcome our mental thing with the Vols! So those things combined with all the stuff going on in my life have me a little worried or distracted from or about this game. However make no mistake when I FINALLY get to the game & in my seat. (Usually I’m there early for the Dawg Walk but last week it was close to kickoff & it looks like it will be this week.) I’ll be enthused & will hopefully see us put the whippin on ole Phat Phil Foolmer he deserves!

I think the bye week will help the Dawgs. It helped them last year when they had a bye week before Florida and they won that game 42-30. Tennessee had a bye week before the UGA game last year and won 35-14. Bye weeks are a huge deal in the SEC b/c even a bad team( like Tennessee is this year) has talented players and an extra week of preparation can really help you especially against a rival. I know that Tennessee struggled last year and pulled it together down the stretch, but this Tennessee team is AWFUL on offense as in Notre Dame 2007 awful. This Vol team reminds me a lot of the 2005 version that went 5-6 and had problems at the QB position. The Vols have talent on defense especially in the secondary. Their offensive line is solid and their running game is good. I think those elements will keep the Vols in the game, but they don’t have the leadership on offense to pull off the upset. I say the Dawgs will win 23-19.

UGA fans should be salavating. This is your payback year against the Volunteers. No, there isn’t alot on the line for Tennessee other than knocking off UGA, but UGA does have alot to play for. The East is still undecided but is narrowed down. UT has basically eliminated themselves and may be viewed as no more then a pest this year to the UGA fan. Nonetheless, at some point they’ll find something. A something that may turn a crappy season thusfar into a season of, ‘Where was that at the beginning?’…In reality, UGA should win this game. From my seat, unless the UT defense can outscore the UGA offense, it’s practically a done deal…Bulldawgs, start celebrating the win Friday night…

Okay 2 Tech fans spatting off, no worse than the few UGA fans that do the same on the Tech board.

Anyway, my take on this UT vs UGA matchup. The dogs will come out slow with the hangover still a little over them. Not to mention, this has been a slow starting team this year anyway. But I look for the O to crank up in the second with the game still close and start to pull away. This should be a game that in the end, gives you dogs a spring board to get thems rolling again.

I think by Friday the dog fans will be closer to normal, tasting some revenge in the air, but not sure it will quite reach blowout status, though still a solid win in the end. …hope yall win out leading into Thanksgiving.

You don’t think we give you enough respect. Well, I call it Florida syndrome. Florida owns us. The challenge is we play them too early in the season to really build up a good hate. GAWDALMIGHTY, The University of Georgia football team lost a game and now some folks aren’t “allowing themselves” to get excited about the next game, against TN? I don’t give a damn if we had lost the last 3 , I’m excited about it. I’ve spent the last 4 decades figuring out mathematical equations as to how UGA can still win the SEC, which is the only goal that matters.

I woudn’t read too much into the perception that this is not a passionate game. The staff and players are immune to the drama queen, armchair, knee jerk reactions, and know what’s at stake.

I grew up 5 miles from the Tennessee line and have been a dawg all my 57 years. I don’t know about everybody else, but it’s not hard for me to really passionate about this game. Especially after last year’s game. If you can’t get up for beating an SEC east rival, you need to examine your priorities. We’re still playing to win the East and we can’t afford to lose another game.

To answer the rivalry question, I HATE Tennessee. They’re waaaay ahead of Tech and Auburn, and a little ahead of Florida for me personally. They were monsters to us when I was in school in Athens (‘95-‘00), much worse than any other fans in my personal experience during that time frame. And to wreckmaniac I would LOVE to see Tech play in the SEC. The schedule has been weak at best, and this Gardner-Webb game shouldn’t do anything to help your cause. It’s great that Tech is finally winning a few games, but perhaps you should save the smack until the North Avenue Nerds have multiple wins against ranked programs. To jumbo best wishes, my friend. Beat the Gators.

Fans were ready for BAMA. The buzz in that stadium was amazing and I wasn’t even there. I could feel it through the radio. Why weren’t the players? I believe alot of what is happening in the world today, economic problems, high gas prices, election, etc has a way of tempering everyones emotions.

The Bulldog Nation needs to be and will be ready come game time. If we don’t come out early and play hard physical football and get a lead early it could be bad for us. The fans want to see the team live up to their expectations. This is a good team that is capable of playing well, being physical, knocking people around, winning and winning big but they haven’t done it yet. Now is the time to do it and begin a run for the SECCG!

Smack, Smack, Smack…UT, Bama, UF, Nerds…The bottom line is we need to make a statement in this game and hang over 40 points on UT. TENN is a good football team with some bad breaks. The truth is in the BAMA game we were high on ourselves being 4-0, wearing our black jerseys, and Munson retiring. We just assumed we would roll the tide (no pun intended). After getting smacked in the face in the first half our guys came out fighting and put up 30 points. Our o-line held its own and we will get better. I watched the Bama/UK game and I personally am stoked for the chance to meet BAMA in the SEC championship game. We are very much in the hunt for the SEC and the NC. If you win the SEC you will be in the NC. (Jez, I sound like Robin Williams in the scene from “Good Morning Vietnam”…kp,vp,pt,dz,etc.). The point is this: If you lose this game you are out of everything. So Go You Silver Britches and WIN BIG!!!!! PS- Aaron Murray is really in (TE) Orson Charles’ ear about comitting to UGA. They both looked sharp the other night here in Tampa.

Being a Dawg fan for over 40 years and living in ATL, I have always thought TECH was the big rival. Dooley took care of the gators 17-7-1, so that wasn’t as big until SOS got to Fla. We didn’t play UT every year, but when we did the games were big and really good. Auburn has alway been there and they were the last SEC game of the year for us, so it became more important to beat them. Going thru the SEC schedule, having a week off and playing a mediocre GT team, the game lost some of its luster. TECH is more of nuisance now just like their mascot.

Now I think the pecking order for rivals has evolved to the following: Gators Auburn Tech UT

South Carolina would like to be on that list. They think that because the Ole Ball Sack is there, they are our rival. They are still just a chicken with a visor.

I went to my first UGA & UT game in redneckville last year. I can honestly say it was the worst feeling i had as a fan in my whole life. I also live in N.GA, and hate the vols more than any other team we play. I think they(UGA players)remember what last years game felt like and they wont let it happen again this year. For the DA that chalks up the UT win over the DAWGS at the start of the season, PHAT PHILS 2008 EDITION OF ROCKYFLOP TENNESSEE leaves ATHENS 2-4!!!! And would not be surprised if they finish 5-7 or 4-8.

as far rivalries go, I’d still say that Florida is the most hated, with Tennessee 2nd, and Tech 3rd. The Dawgs have dominated against Tech the last 7 years but trust me, NOTHING is worse than a loss to Tech. Tech doesn’t get to beat UGA much football, so when it does happen their fans are ULTRA obnoxious. One Tech loss is the equivalent of 4 losses in a row to the Gators or Vols. I’d like to see the Dawgs get back to beating the Vols the way they did when I was in school at UGA, winning 4 in a row. But I’d love to see the Dawgs beat the Gators for 4-5 years in a row! But if that can’t happen, then maybe the Florida vs. UGA games can be like the old FSU vs. Florida rivalry of the 1990’s, where so much was at stake for both teams.

I think I would say that the order is Florida, Auburn, Tenn, then Tech. South Carolina is hard to put in there because there is not that much history with them except for as recent years. As for this weeks game, we need to go out there and take care of business because if we don’t then we can kiss our chances of winning the east good bye. In my opinon we need to have a winning streak going into the Florida game to even have a chance. I just hope that LSU can pull one out in Gainsville this weekend. It is going to be a good game this weekend but a hard one without Ellerbe, Chandler, and Durham. These guys are leaders for us.

We just got punched in the mouth and emabarrassed by BAMA which is a definite wake up call. We are facing a Vol team with its back to the wall, which may be inferior on paper but nonetheless has had our number the past few years. I have no doubt we will be pumped and ready come Saturday but there is no need to flap our gums about anything a few days out. We did that two weeks ago and look what transpired. Too many UGA fans start talking NC too early…we need to take it one game at a time, minimize mistakes, and play solid football.

What’s up with the lack of passion for UGA-UT?

The answer is 31-0 and the realization that we are stuck with CWM until he dies or retires,

Now, losing to Bama is no crime, but playing UT is a reminder of the last time a pedestrian offense destroyed us in the first half-ending the game and our title hopes.

As long as CWM is coach, the best we can hope for is that we have enough talent to overcome his ineptitude.

knoxdawg,

Gimme a break on the players being concerned about the economy, election, etc. They are students and may be concerned about their classes, girlfriend, etc. but if ANY of that creeps into their minds at gametime, then they have NO business being on the team.

I am still puzzled as to why we come out flat every week. How can you not be bursting out of your skin when you walk through the tunnel at Sanford Stadium to all those Dawgs screaming their lungs out for you?

The coaches have to find a way to get the momentum and keep it from the start. We have chewed this one thoroughly, but the penalties simply have to end. We can’t expect our defense to give up 30 yards a drive and hold them from scoring. Imagine starting on the 50 yard line every time…that’s essentially what we are giving the opposition when we are assessed two 15 yarders.

As for the rivalries, my take is: 1. Florida - I HATE them!!! 2. Tenn - I HATE orange and have heard Rocky Top enough in my life! 3. Auburn - See the orange reference above 4. Tech - We have to win the state! 5. USC - Yet another border war

Ok Ok I know it must feel horrible to loose 1 game to Alabama, yet what if you lost to Florida because of turnovers, the kicking game, and bad coaching. UCLA beats you because to you fumble the ball going in for a touchdown and Bad coaching. Ok the second half you have the ball on the Auburn side of the field 97% of the time and you cannot get a firstdown to get in field goal range and bad coaching… Dawg fans be proud of your team as my fellow VOLS fans suck it up and just try and survive for the rest of the year… Oh yea Dawgs you still get a chance to beat Florida!!! I’m begging to think the SEC has a Bama basis! We can’t buy a call against them! Then it looks like they forced CBS to take there game over two better games. There needs to be an investigation & the SEC offices need to be moved out of AL to remove any doubt of basis or potential corruption.

What’s up with the lates poll on AJC’s sports page? Sounds like a pessimistic question to me. It’s not like UGA’s out of contention. Didn’t LSU win the championship with 2 losses last year? And uf with a loss the year before? This is exactly how the poll asks about Stafford leaving for the pros after this season:

Yes: He could be the No. 1 overall pick
No: He’ll want to come back to win a championship

I still like our chances this year! GO DAWGS!

Chip, being a big fan myself, it really doesn’t matter how we feel. This team was humbled and ridiculed by bama and the rest of the nation for the “blackout.” The Dawgs need to circle the wagons and focus on mistake-free football. If they are determined to do that, they should have no problem with UT. Let’s leave the emotion out of this game and concentrate on Xs and Os, discipline, and execution.

You can’t say that a team that averages 10 wins a year doesn’t win big games. Hell, in the SEC almost every week is a big game. Don’t give up on the Dawgs just yet. Let’s be realistic. Most of us true Dawgs knew that it would be really difficult to go undefeated this season before it ever began. Alabama has obviously surprised many football fans and has set themselves apart from most in the SEC. When we thought our toughest game would be later in the season against Florida, LSU, or Auburn, we may very well faced our toughest SEC challenge in Alabama. We should except that loss as we were not prepared and focus on each game ahead of us. That being said, if we have faced our toughest challenge, we will get a second opportunity…in the dome. Take care of business one game at a time and we will continue to get better each game like we have done in the past seasons. Dawgs will win the SEC East but must be better prepared for a tough Bama team that is superior in our weakest points.

THIS JUST IN

AUBURN FIRES OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR TONY FRANKLIN…

Here’s the story from the Mobile Press Register

AUBURN — Offensive coordinator Tony Franklin has been relieved of his duties only six games into his first year at Auburn, a stunning decision by head coach Tommy Tuberville that might effectively end Auburn’s ambitious experiment with the spread offense.

“After evaluating where we are at this point of the season offensively, I felt it was in the best interest of the Auburn football program to make this change,” Tuberville said in a statement released by the school. “I’m not satisfied with where we are and I am personally going to take a larger role with the offense the remainder of the season. We are going to work harder than ever to make sure we consistently improve as we move forward.”

Surprised players gathered in the football complex lobby, waiting for a 3:35 p.m. meeting with Tuberville, who was expected to give them his reasons for the move.

I graduated in May and UT was (as far as I remember) the only team we played more than once that we had a losing record against while I was in college. And think about those losses: the 04 heartbreaker that killed all the momentum we had after dominating LSU the week before; the 06 comeback that put us in a tailspin for over a year; the 07 beatdown that, until last week, was the worst performance I’d ever seen considering the potential we had.

So yeah, the Vols are pretty high on my list of teams I want to beat, and beat bad. Maybe not higher than Florida, but damn close.

Yep, ‘88 is my class. I’m up here in Kingsport, but I was born in ut hospital (and moved to GA by the grace of god!!) It’s sad how much they want their team to lose all of their games just to get rid of phat phil. One made kick last year and they would have gotten their wish.

We better win, I can’t come to work wearing one of those ugly flourescent orange shirts (ongoing bet). I walked out my front door last year and roosters started crowing. My wife took one look and said “that’s the ugliest shirt I’ve ever seen!” This year I hope I can bring in a red UGA shirt for my antagonist to wear.

There is nothing worse than gloating fans in orange, whether it be tenn or fl.

jddawg37….. Lets be realistic and ask ourselves where is the carryover of better from last year. Oh yeah the last two years the dawgs have gotten better as the season progressed but with no championships to show for it. Now so far this year we may just think we faced our toughest test in Alabama. In fact the last two years the dawgs thought that they would beat Tennessee and it didn’t happen. Dawgs got embarrassed both times. If the Dawgs are gonna win the east then they better play a helluva lot better than they did against both SC and Bama. Vandy,LSU,Florida Kentucky and yes Auburn will all be tough. I get sick and tired of hearing the crap every year that the Dawgs will continue get better after each game. How about after each year for Christ sakes! heck I’M a true Dawg fan and I knew we wouldn’t go undefeated with the way our defense has played the last few years. While Willie is the DC and Bobo the OC, it may be awhile before Dawgs win any or even contend for a championship.Only two teams in SEC have made a statement thus far and that’s Bama and Vandy. If the dawgs lose this week or next week, then the season is over as far as any championships are concerned.

Almost 2 weeks since our loss, I am still reeling from it. It is hard to get excited about this game because I fear this will be TN’s retribution game for the season. Hopefully the bye week will help and the team will still be angry about the Bama game. The fans will not allow a twice in a row embarrassment at home.

By Learned one

October 8, 2008 6:07 PM | Link to this

There is no excitement in the game for 3 reasons.

  1. Tennessee is just a bad team. Period.

  2. UGA had all their enthusiasm beaten out of them by bama. They got a physical whipping that is still in their heads and will be in their mindset the rest of the season. They found out their o-line is not that great and that there are teams like Bama (LSU also comes to mind) that are simply bigger, stronger, and flat out meaner on the line of scrimmage.

  3. UGA knows that the national title hopes are now just a pipe dream. They will lose a minumum of at least 1 more game and even if they could win the east would they really want a rematch with Bama? I see some UGA fans clammoring for a rematch but deep down inside I can’t imagine anyone from UGA wanting any part of Bama again. That would be like asking a soldier who lost 2 arms and a leg in a minefield to hop back through the minefield again on the one leg left.

BREAKING NEWS

RICHT DISMISSES TWO DOGS

Here’s my initial news report, which should be posted soon but you’ll get first:

By CT Two Georgia football players have been dismissed from the team, coach Mark Richt confirmed Wednesday. Donavon Baldwin, a junior safety, and Walter Hill, a redshirt freshman wide receiver, are no longer with the Bulldogs. Baldwin’s departure was the result of a mutual agreement between he and Richt after the two met recently to discuss his situation. Hill was kicked off because “he didn’t live up to the standards of doing things the Georgia way,” Richt said. Baldwin, who was already suspended for the first game this season after being convicted of a January DUI, was injured in a barroom brawl two days before the opening of preseason camp. Richt pronounced his indefinitely suspended from that point forward. He had not practiced with the team since. “Baldwin and I have talked and we thought it’d be in his best interest to finish [his career] somewhere else,” Richt said. “Let’s just say he has a better chance of graduating somewhere other than Georgia right now. I hope that’s not intruding on his student rights.” Hill, who chose football over basketball at Georgia, suffered a broken hand during preseason practices and injured a foot in recent weeks. But neither the injuries or his indecision over basketball or football were not a factor in the decision, according to Richt. The 6-foot-5 Hill was rated the 12th best basketball prospect in Georgia, according to Rivals.com, and originally committed to Bulldogs coach Dennis Felton. “[Basketball] was not a factor,” Richt said. “I think he’s going to continue on [in football] elsewhere.”

POST-PRACTICE UPDATE

Because of the bad weather Wednesday, Georgia had a split practice between the offense and defense at The Ramsey Center. CMR called the walk-through workout “a blessing in disguise” since the team wasn’t allowed to go full speed and got some well-needed rest… .

The biggest news: CMR said with certainty that starting MLB Dannell Ellerbe will not play Saturday. Ellerbe said Monday night he was confident he would be able to play at least in a limited capacity. But Richt Ellerbe “hasn’t gotten one rep” through Wednesday so they’re moving on without him. Darryl Gamble will get the start alongside Rennie Curran.

Losing WR Walter Hill and being without Tony Wilson (ankle surgery) at least for a while means the Bulldogs will sign AT LEAST two wideouts next February, CMR said. Three seems more likely. Currently they have no commitments at that position… .

TE Bruce Figgins not only is going to play Saturday but could start. He survived full contact on Tuesday and went through walk-throughs on Wednesday. CMR said it remains up to Figgins whether he’ll undergo shoulder surgery after the Tennessee game or wait until after the season.

I can’t imagine anyone from UGA wanting any part of Bama again.

Many may wonder if Alabama wants any of Georgia again after Bama’s first string gave up 30 points in the second half, you know just one point short of what the DAWGS gave up in the first half. Yeah Bama won hands down, they scored ten more in the second half and secured the victory, but I imagine the Dawgs would have a different game plan next time,Alabama may well win again, but don’t look for the Dawgs to lay down. Also we hear the same ole same ole every year, Georgia loses a game and according to all you soothsayers, the Dawgs will lose several more games and wind up in the Motor CIty Bowl or no bowl at all, and then they go on and have a ten win season.Richt didin’t just get involved with football a couple of weeks ago, he will have an answer.Go Dawgs!

note to Mike T,

I would love another shot at BAMA. Here’s why. At the end of the first qtr they had 40 yards rushing, 47 yards passing and had benefited for 53 yards in penalties, the penalties allowed them to keep the ball for 12 minutes. The second qtr was a perfect storm of mistakes by us and a good, not great Bama team taking advantage of them. This was like a basketball game where the refs call three fouls on your star player and the other team gets hot and you are dead by halftime. Yes Bama was the best team on the field that night, but I’m not convinced they are the best in the SEC. I wonder how KY feels about them after they gift wrapped a td which was the difference in the game.

I will say this again—Bama beat us and congrats to them. We will find out how good they are Nov 25. If we take care of business, we may see them again. I doubt it, but strange things will happen between now and Nov 25.

Chip, I hope the Dogs beat UT, but the thrill is definitely gone. Nick Saban stole it during the funeral of our NC hopes. UGA was supposed to be the best CFB team in America. As for reality? The Dogs are awful, or average at best. Great skill position players on offense, but no ability to protect them. The defense is just is one hot mess. No pass rush, too much zone coverage, not enough courage to blitz. UT may be struggling, but the Volunteer defense is superb. UGA does not perform well versus teams with quality defenses. There will be no blowout. There will be no NC. There will be no SEC East division title. The thrill is gone! If by some miracle, MS and Moreno are back next year…maybe we can all dream of greatness once again. As for 2008, the thrill is GONE! Go Dogs.

What funeral. The goal is always to win the SECC, anything else is ice cream on top your pie. The goal is still attainable but we have to concentrate and win all, except Tech which does not count in the SEC. It can be done, we have the team that can do it. I love our coaches, but this year they are the ones that have to “Man up”. If a gameplan aint working, just try something else. How about a toss sweep instead of that run between the tackels that was stopped the last eight times. Just my opinion, I don’t get paid one dime to coach, they have the job and all the responsibility that comes with it. I call em like I see em. If I don’t see em, I make em up.

All of the folks who think Bama aint as good because of Kentucky game last week are the same ones who claim UGA is good even though the Dawgs barely escaped SC in Columbia. Some fans need to take off the rose colored glasses from the Bama Game. Bama beat us and thoroughly in our own Stadium period. Thrill, try sitting at homecoming 1979 and get beat by Virginia 31-0. And that night we still partied like it was 1979, sorry stole it from Prince. I am telling you the world and life as we know it has not ended because of a loss. Heck the Donnan years we expected to go 8-3 and play for a minor bowl and that was a good year. Losses are a part of life as much as the wins. You pick yourself up, line up and wait for the snap. As in football, as in life. If you only knew the losses in my life, football would take on a whole new meaning, fun to win, not the end of the world after a loss. I hope you can take some solace out of these words, not meant as an insult, as a reminder of what is important in life. In mine, though I love them and graduated 83, they don’t make the top ten. Top twenty for sure. Good luck and may God bless.

Cuz I feel ya, bro. Sometimes it’s important to take a step back and put things into perspective. Thanks for your insight. I see where you’re coming from.

Later, Cuz.

Gen Neyland,

Slaving away at Tennessee Stampings. BTW the rednecks in Pulaski can hold their own with rednecks from any state. (I believe that is the birthplace of the KKK.)

Chip,

I read the article regarding Southerland. Have you seen him practice? He’ll play some on Saturday but I’m sure it will be limited.

Any idea how effective he might be after being out so long?

This kid is an NFL quality player. I hope he can get back to 100% this season.

The Passion is gone because UT is pathetic. What has Fulmer accomplished w/o Cutcliffe? Get a decent coach @ UT and there may be more passion in this rivalry. I see GA winning this handily. Hopefully, Fulmer won’t make it through the season.

For me, living here in Florida, I believe UGA’s rivalries, are ranked as follows; #1 Florida, #2 Tenn, #3 Auburn, then Georgia Tech. I am still excited about the possibilities that this season holds for UGA, as we all should be. All of us (fans and players, coaches) have to move on from the previous game, think of it as nothing more than an after thought, and focus on the task at hand. UGA is still in the thick of things. An SEC East champiionship should be the most desired above any league and NC game. Even now Vandy and KY both have vastly improved and have turned into formidable foes for us. So we do have our work cut out for us. Lets get pumped for Tenn, and every game as long UGA has a chance. The Ala game is our defining moment, much like Tenn game was for us last year.

You are correct. For some reason I had you pegged for Frito Lay…

I support the TEAM. I clutch tight to my handguns and religion, too…

The fans are scared and they should be. I’m sh1ttin’ in my pants. Georgia just got whipped by an average (now overrated becuase of it) Alabama team and we looked HORRIFIC. If the same Georgia team shows up Saturday, we lose.

I dunno, kinda hard to “get it up” after that dismal performance against ‘Bama. Sickening!

But, as a Dawg fan and owner of one of UGA’s bloodline bulldawgs, I’ll be flying the flag in front of the house …. as usual.

Paul’s Johnson:

“Loved “LizDawg’s” attempt to sound smart by using unequivocably in her post. Too bad there’s no such word…academically your school will always be in second place in this state (third, if you count Emory).”

There is such a word and you would know if you knew how to use a dictionary. You are the idiot. Looks like she’s the smart one and you are Paul’s D1ck. You owe LizDawg an apology.

The correct spelling is unequivocally. At least it’s used in the correct context even if I don’t agree with the opinion…
