UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Kiante to TE an interesting move
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Is it just me or is there anybody else out there having a hard time getting their head around the whole Kiante Tripp move to tight end?
To review, Tripp came to Georgia as a defensive end. Buried on the depth chart and in need of offensive linemen, the Bulldogs moved him over to offense before the 2007 season. He played sparingly last season, then opened preseason camp as the starting right tackle.
Then Trinton Sturdivant goes down for the year at the all-important left tackle position early in camp. After considerable deliberation, the coaching staff concludes that Tripp is their most talented and athletic lineman and moves him to left tackle. He starts there the first three games.
Tripp suffers an ankle injury in the South Carolina game and doesn’t play against Arizona State. By the Alabama game, we learn the 6-foot-6, 290-pound Tripp has been moved to tight end because of injury issues there. Tripp plays one play against the Crimson Tide.
So let me get this straight: Tripp, who was so valuable as an offensive lineman that he’s your starter at left tackle, is suddenly so expendable that you can move him to third-string tight end? That’s where he is for the Tennessee game, behind redshirt freshman Aron White and Bruce Figgins.
A couple of conclusions can be drawn. One, Vince Vance must be getting the job done at left tackle, though it wasn’t clearly evident in the Alabama game. Two, the coaches expect starting tight end Tripp Chandler to be out a good, long while and Figgins to have season-ending surgery next week. In that scenario, Tripp becomes your No. 2 tight end.
Here’s another theory: Georgia’s getting ready to play some smash-mouth football on the edges. Think about it. The 290-pound Tripp lined up outside the 330-pound Vance with one of their 300-pound guards pulling and 240-pound fullback Brannan Southerland providing the lead block for Knowshon Moreno around left end.
One thing is clear. Georgia is keeping its options open. They’ve told Tripp, who has gained 20 pounds since last season, not to take off any of the weight. Meanwhile, I don’t think it will happen anytime soon but I would love to see big Kiante haul in a pass and have a safety between him in the goal line.
Now for some links:
In case you missed Coach Mark Richt’s call-in radio show Monday night, you can find a complete recap here on the antiorange page… .
Former Bulldog Will Muschamp continues to flourish in the coaching ranks. He’s being depicted as a savior at Texas, where he just arrived from Auburn as the new defensive coordinator… .
Unable to hook up with an NFL team and back in school, former Georgia safety Kelin Johnson offers up a new feature on Georgiadogs.com called “Kelin’s Keys to the Game.” If you can get the video to work right it’s pretty insightful stuff. And Kelin is a natural in front of a camera… .
Columnist Adam Van Brimmer of the Savannah Morning News writes that Matthew Stafford needs to put on his big-boy pants and lead the Bulldogs.

I think Tripp is at tight end for extra blocking support. God knows we need it. I’d be surprised to see many balls thrown his way. That’s a pipe dream.
Adam Van Brimmer needs to put on his big boy pants. Stafford has done everything he can this year to help Georgia win. He’s on pace to have a big year statistically and has made very few mistakes. He’s been the one and only constant on the offense. I don’t think its fair to put Georgia’s destiny entirely on his shoulders when the guys up front aren’t giving him much help.

I thought it was really strange putting Tripp at TE. We’re thin on the OL, so you’d think he’d be in heavy rotation there at left and/or right tackle (and Vance rotating to guard as well?). But you raise a good point Chip. Maybe it does signal a commitment to some smashmouth blocking from the TE position. And shoot, I’d love to see him with the ball in the secondary.

Smashmouth is what it is going to take to get a long winning streak going. I like Tripp at TE. It will not only open up the running game but puts our WR’s in position to make some hugh plays downfield. “Ole Timey” football, lets do it.

Is it too much to ask if we can just put in a TE that can catch? How many balls does Chandler need to drop before he is not the starting TE? I guess getting hurt is the only way. Has anyone seen if this Tripp guy can catch? Let’s hope so, or UGA is in for more 3rd down conversions not being converted.

Personally, I like the move of K Tripp to TE. Our O-line needs help blocking. This this force other defenses to adjust to 8 men in the box and this will create some 1 on 1 situations for AJG and MoMass. It’s a good move!
If we’re all honest, the TE has been absent in our passing offense since before sir drops a lot Martrez Milner. The days of Watson, McMichael, and Pope are HISTORY and I hate it….but it’s just the truth by numbers. Look at the drop in catches over the past 8 seasons….

bingo mike. everyone talks about muschump as if he’s some sort of wonderboy at the DC position. yes, he’s a uga grad and yes, he’s fiery competitor. but so are lots of coaches. being fiery and loud doesn’t make you a good coach.
We blistered AU twice when Muschump was the DC. That doesn’t mean he’s a bad coach, but I wouldn’t be first in line to hire him should our own DC leave UGA.

Guys, were thin at nearly every position. Look not only at our TE’s but our linebackers, special teams guys, receivers & offensive lineman. This is getting almost ridiculous. Were are not even close to the team that began practicing in August. But we must press on and get better and figure out ways to win games. But at this point injuries are really starting to worry me.

Chip,
Interesting article for the Savannah paper on Stafford. Another observation - Why does Matthew Stafford continue to NOT throw the ball underneath? When he scrambles, he looks for the home run, instead of an open receiver coming back to the ball. With an inexperienced O-line, he’s got to get rid of the ball quick. To be a true #1 draft pick, in my opinion, he’s got to be able to do the “dink & dunk”. Plus it’ll open up the down-field stuff & the running game. Your thoughts?

While Chandler has been a big disappointment catching the ball, it seems many here don’t understand that the tight end’s main job is blocking not receiving. Our offensive line needs to be focusing on protecting the quarterback and making holes for Knowhon. At this point, Let AJ and MM make the big catches. With BS back at fullback, we can always go to him as a possession receiver. It’s nice to have a tight end with good hands, but it’s not mandatory. It is mandatory we have another big body on the line that can block.

I actually skipped MNF for Terminator/Prison Break last night.
I spent Saturday playing with my new Samsung Blackjack II and halfway paying attention to the TV.
I don’t care what they do or who is playing what position as long as they are able to rebound from BAMA. The last thing in the world we need right now is ANOTHER a* whoopin handed down from the boys in orange.

Tim: I talked to Richard Samuel and he is as confused as anybody about his situation. The bottom line is this: RBs coach Tony Ball has established a clear pecking order at tailback and that’s Knowshon Moreno followed by Caleb King. The Dogs haven’t needed (or wanted) to go deeper than that the last few games. Samuel is on the punt return team now and some kickoff returns. He didn’t play at all against Arizona State. But he said he’s working hard and doing whatever he can to get onto the football field… .
zdawg: what makes you think I didn’t know Tripp was third-string TE for Bama? I wrote it above. And you’re welcome… .
PBR=America in a can: Not sure what the deal is with Walter Hill. Last I heard is he had a broken foot. Of course, he broke a hand in preseason camp. Good question and one I will seek an answer to… .

Have to agree with jfergNCdawg.
Tripp to TE can only be an upgrade at the position b/c our TE has been out of the offensive picture for the last several years. Neither Milner nor Chandler could consistently catch the ball. Their only use was for blocking, so that is no big change to have Tripp in there. In fact, it can only help b/c I’m sure Tripp will be a better blocker. Chandler was no threat to the defense b/c they knew there was at least a 50% chance he was going to drop a ball thrown right into his chest.
Remember when we had big Leonard Pope running down the middle of the field to catch a 20 yard pass and run over a few blockers as he tumbled another 10 yards? Or Randy McMichael snagging a ball after releasing from the line and chugging over a few guys into the end zone? Unfortunately those days are over until we recruit better at the TE position for that type of player.

As for Richard Samuel, my guess is Ball prefers the more experienced runners who have proven they can hang onto the ball. Samuels had a hard time doing that the few chances he had at the beginning of the season. Welcome to SEC defense Richard. Keep working at it in practice and you’ll get your chance.

I’d love to see us play smash mouth football for a change, offensively and defensively. We have big strong linemen and big strong backs so lets play to our strengths. BAMA beat us by doing what they do best and doing it well. We need to do the same thing. Time for us to MAN UP defensively and quit this zone garbage. I’d rather be beat man to man than picked apart like we aren’t even there.

I know how we all feel about Chandler dropping passes, but has anyone else noticed that ALL of our receivers have been dropping passes? Maybe Chip can help me out with some stats, but I think that all of them can share the blame.
Secondly, I think that we dropped the ball (no pun intended) in recruiting, considering our current shortcomings at TE and on the OL. The transfer of Ward is now obvious, although I’m not necessarily sure he would be playing.
Lastly, any word on the time for the Vandy game? I looked at the schedule for that day and I’m guessing that we’ll be on CBS.

As I posted after the Alabama game I like the idea of Tripp at TE.Chandler has caught what 3 balls this year?Figgins MAY have run 3 pass routes all year so putting an extra tackle on the field seems to be a good move to me.Obviously the kid is just good enough to play both tackle spots but not dominate at either but he would be a outstanding blocker at TE.Now if he is mobile enough to go in motion and get a running start off the edge one on one on a LB or DB look for a lot of pancakes and great seals on whatever side he goes to.Also now if one of our tackles is having a problem with the outside rush what better way to address that then having TWO tackles at that spot?Like I said IF he can catch even a little red zone 10 yds or less who can check this guy? He’s to big for a DB or LB to cover all he has to do is run 5 yds and turn around!!The only problem with throwing him the ball I would think is him getting stripped because I don’t think many players are going to want to tackle him straight up but every body will go for the strip considering he is not a proven pass catcher. As for Samuel I don’t understand why he didn’t get the redshirt…In my opinion King looks to be the better back from the 1st game.Moreno redshirted so did King I have YET to see anything so special about Samuel at RB to warrant him being on the field.

Do we need a tight end to catch the ball to beat UT and Vandy? Or Fla? Just line up and play smash mouth football. This will make Stafford a better qb. He is the best in the SEC and can win 10 of the next 11, if we get the running game going.
By the way, if you have the best qb and the best running back in the conference or on the field that day, WHY DON’T YOU TAKE THE BALL FIRST INSTEAD OF DEFERRING TO THE SECOND HALF? Put the ball in the hands of your best players as often as you can and you have a better chance of winning. Does CMR think that his defense is better than Stafford and Moreno? How about letting us score 31 points in the first half and give the other team the ball starting the second half and let them play catch up.
Go Dawgs!

Hey, I thought the dogs had so much talent they were 3 deep with “5 star” players at every position. So why are they haveing to move a fat tackle to tight end? Oh yeah, they are going to play “smash-mouth”. But, how can you play smash-mouth when you have a poor offensive line that was whipped soundly by SC and Bama? Is the fat 3rd string tight end going to make this happen? What a joke? Over-rated dogs lose to TN…Shreveport, here we come.

Last I heard Owens was out for the year. I know he is a senior with a good chance at going early in the draft. You have to figure that his stock has fallen some since he has been out all year. Chip, what time should we expect to have word on the Vandy game time or if CBS chooses to exercise there 6 day option?
Will Muschamp is being talked about as a potential candidate to be UT’s head coach if they bite the estimated 10 million dollar buyout bullet & fire Fulmer along with all his assistants. (http://3rdsaturdayinblogtober.wordpress.com/2008/09/23/and-your-next-university-of-tennessee-head-football-coach-is/) This was no shock to me because after the UCLA lost I started telling my UT friends that Muschamp would be a great fit for that job. One would think that Bobby Johnson will move up towards the top of this list should the job come open. My Clemson friends say that IPTAY & the fans are starting to build a consensus towards Johnson if they fire Tommy Bowden. Johnson played & coached there so it would be an interesting choice for him if he’s offered both jobs. Which one would you take? Personally if I’m him I go home. If there’s no attachment to either school then you’d think UT would be the first choice since there a to SEC school.

Good grief people, there’s a blurb on this very website about the time of the Vandy game. It might require more than 2 minutes of your attention span, but its there. YoungDawg, I’m no expert but I’ll bet they’ll wait and see how this weeks games go before deciding which game they’ll televise next week and at what time. There are a few great games for them to choose from and if UGA trips up again (doubt it seriously) like they did last week, they probably won’t be televised.
As far as Muschamp is concerned, it would be interesting to see if UGA would be willing to offer him another lateral move for the same position if CWM doesn’t get the D back where it belongs. He would probably be more apt to staying in Texas where a head coaching position would be more imminent due to Mack Brown’s age. But who knows. He may be another Paterno or Bowden who wants to coach until he dies. Just a thought.

Frank, the blurb I believe you referred to is “CBS has delayed it decision and MAY wait until Sunday to decide whether to broadcast Vanderbilt at Georgia, LSU at South Carolina or Ole Miss at Alabama. CBS has first choice over ESPN and Raycom, which would broadcast the other two games.” Unless there’s a new update I’ve missed that’s all that’s been on this site today. Please read things completely before lashing out at people & have your facts straight! The fact is that CBS is deciding today weather to pick a game or to take there six day option. So people asking about this have a valid question. BTW the Yong in my name is not there to reference my age, unless you count 40ish as being “young”. Muschamp also was at Auburn when they lost a couple of other games they were favored to win. And, as we all know, the only possible reason that any team could ever lose a game is if the defensive coordinator was totally incompetent.

I would state for the record that CWM has done an adequate job much of the time. It is those “some” of the times that makes some fans completely dumbfounded and angry as to why he is still the DC. I am not one of those fans but I can’t for the life of me understand why he waits so long to react to the opposing offensive schemes. Last year at TN he had absolutely no clue against Cutcliff in the first half much the same against Bama this year. Before you break those games down, there were many in the last few years with him as DC.I don’t know that replacing WM is the answer but our defense has not been the same since the departure of Van Gorder. Is the problem Richt? I honestly do not know. I suspect there is some serious loyalty factor there and I can respect that to a degree.
Even the fiercest of fans have to step back and be honest at times. The Georgia offense has kept us in and won more games than the defense has been winning. I think we’ll agree that we have the optimum college level talent at Georgia. But for some reason the defense is only playing up to that level in short spurts some of the time.

AR, I’ll just have to cling to the naive notion that an offense has something to do with the halftime score, and there are more rational explainations to how games go than some inexplicable refusal of the DC to adjust.
Do I really have to mention the several games that BVG’s squad failed to meet expectations? Lets hope WM makes better adjustments to TN than BVG did in 2004.
And I cannot think of a single game that our offense could take credit for winning despite the defense during WM.

They’ve had Tripp catching balls off the Jugs machine. If he can catch off of that, he can catch a rocket off Stafford’s arm. I’d hate to be a DB or LB and see Kiante coming at me! I bet we see a lot of Deion Sanders type “tackles” if Tripp has the ball!!!!!
It’s going to be nice to have Southerland back in the backfield! Chapas has done a great job but no one blocks like #36! Dawgs win big on Saturday and set up a showdown for 1st place in the SEC East against Vandy!

Altamaha, point well taken. BVG wasn’t in my mind a defensive god but he was highly effective. I don’t have the stats but they were more impressive than WM’s tenure thus far.
Don’t get me wrong I am not calling for WM’s job. I gave him ample credit for the turn around last year and believe he’ll do it again. I can understand some fan’s displeasure though. I too wish he was more proactive and less reactive. As I mentioned earlier it may be more Richt than WM. I guess this we’ll probably never know

Take the ball and SCORE! Can you imagine how fate could have twisted differently on that blacked out Saturday night? Whatever. I can’t sell this silly argument, but it was fun for a minute. I do like the aggressive approach of starting the game on offense. Ya’ll are onto something there!
Who is going to step up and prevent the new 10 Vols QB from picking apart our Defense? Willie? He ain’t gonna blitz more. He’s afraid of giving up “the big play” that WR Greg Jones can deliver. However, Bama proved that the “Bend, but don’t break” philosophy is ABSOLUTELY BUSTED! I ain’t no Lee Corso, but…UGA will never achieve greatness without a premiere DC! CWM ain’t getting it done. Who would you replace Willie Mart with? I don’t know. I ain’t no Corso, but I do like the idea of someone else in charge of the Dawgs’ D!
For the first time in my life, I can honestly say that I am greatly impressed with the aggression and skill of the UK and Vanderbilt defenses. Even they look better than the banged up Bulldogs’ batallion. I know Vandy and UK ain’t got more talent or depth!! Maybe their defensive players are better coached, better prepared, and more focused than UGA’s unit is. Just a guess. I ain’t no Lee Corso. Whatcha got, ya’ll?

To the insomniacs out there:
How do you feel about the remarks made by DT Ricky “Mean” Jean-Francois? Do you buy the spin control that he was eluding to taking Tebow out by “making him ineffective”? I ain’t no Lee Corso, but I think the young man spoke honestly from his heart, when he stated that his D would take Tebow out, if given the chance. This sounded like an attempt to injure/mame the Heisman winning QB. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! If you don’t want to get hit, don’t play football. I do think someone, maybe a memeber of the LSU coaching staff or old fashioned common sense told RJF to minimize the impact of his original statement. Thus, the spin control.
I’ll attempt to post a link to the ESPN article below.

ARdawg, truth be told he does NOT have any better numbers, and in some of the categories that would surprise you, WM actually has better. BVG was absolutely no more effective, in the results, stats, rankings, numbers, records. He was however, far more popular.

CUPCAKE. That is the problem; it is another cupcake.
Georgia Tech is NOT ranked whatsoever. Whaah. Whaah. Georgia is ranked in the Top 10 for the 5th of the last 6 years, and ranked in the AP Poll to end every single solitary year for 11 consecutive years and this year would be 12. Whaah. Georgia Tech is NOT ranked. Whaah.
Georgia Tech is 4-1 and Georgia is 4-1 and Whaah, Georgia Tech is NOT ranked. Whaah. Whaah.
Neither the Coaches Poll nor the AP Poll have Georgia Tech ranked anywhere even in their Top 30; Whaah.
Georgia Tech’s Strength of Schedule for the entire season, including all games played and all games scheduled this season, is No. 46. Georgia’s SoS for the entire season is No. 1.
5 SEC Teams ranked in the Top 13 teams in both the Coaches’ Poll and 5 Top 13 in the AP Poll for The SEC and the stinking ACC doesn’t even have ANY team ranked in the Top 17 of either poll.
Whaah.
Our Georgia Tech Passing Offense is Number 112 in the nation. Whaah. Our Punt Returns are Number 112 at Tech. Whaah. Our Kickoff returns are Number 112 here at Tech. Whaah.
Whaah.
We are going to spend every day not playing Dudgeons and Dragons or watching Star Trek, but logging onto the Georgia Bulldogs’ Blog whining how great Georgia Tech is and we just get no respect. Whaah.
Both us Tech fans.
Whaah.
Do not have the timidity to come over here and reply. Whaah.
Miami has a Losing Record. Whaah. Virginia has a Losing Record. Whaah. Mississippi State has a Losing Record. Whaah. Whaah. Garner-Webb has a Losing Record. Whaah.

The Georgia Tech fan base is bored.
We’ve only played 1 team, and they beat us up there in Blacksburg. Whaah.
Just Whaah.
Whaah.
We’re better than Georgia. Whaah.
We kick field goals as the clock is expiring against Duke for God’s sake. Duke. Whaah.
We Lost 6 Scholarships in Football for Academic Cheating 2007-2008 on the NCAA Major Infractions Database Probation. Whaah.
All our nerd athletes do drugs and sell drugs like Reuben Houston, Michael Hutts, and little Joey Hamilton.
Whaah.
Our Starting Cornerback for Paul Johnson is charged with RAPE and out on forty thousand dollar bond. Whaah.
Our campus is in the slums. Whaah.
Our sports venues are wonderful examples of our Georgia Tech Engineering Marvels we design and build. Whaah.
We give away a T-Shirt, 2 cokes and 2 hotdogs with free parking to every person who buys 1 ticket to our lousy games against nobodies, which is all we play before Georgia. Whaah.
Whaah. Georgia has a far better APR for our football team than does Tech in Academic Progress Rate.
Whaah. Jerrard Tarrant is charged with RAPE instead of starting at cornerback for Tech.
You sit there and talk about your stats, and not once discuss the fact that all season long, your SoS is Number 46 in the nation compared to UGA for example at SoS Number 1 in the nation.. Whaah. We have an inferiority complex at Tech. Whaah.
You only play one good team all season long, UGA. And, you know it. Whaah.
Don’t sit there and tell me you are Number 3 at this or Number 11 at that when you haven’t and won’t play anyone but us.
I’ve never seen so many CUPCAKES on ONE SCHEDULE since Auburn in their 13-0 season in 2004.
Gardner-Webb. Hell you already played Jacksonville State. Now, Gardner-Webb. Whaah. We had to play Gardner-Webb. Whaah.
I’ve never seen so many CUPCAKES on ONE SCHEDULE since Auburn in their 13-0 season in 2004.
How many people in a city of 6 million, will be there to watch Gardner-Webb you paid a third of a million Tech dollars to play. 900.
Look. They did not come begging you. . You are the ones who scheduled Gardner-Webb

http://www.ajc.com/services/content/sports/stories/2008/10/06/tennesseefootballgames.html Students are not going to vols’ games this season. They say that Coach Fulmer isn’t worth the effort any more and that Tennessee is really just a basketball school anyway any longer with 3 embarrassing losses and 2 unconvincing wins over cupcakes barely. The vols’ players are talking about all the empty seats. And, the athletics director is admitting that indeed Tennessee has lost millions of Revenue and in concessions that are down, not to mention the boos. The fans state that Phillip Fulmer is PAST HIS PRIME.

We still haven’t been able to run on an SEC defense this season. If we do get big yardage this weekend on the ground we still can’t claim that we have run on an SEC defense. UT is looking more like a low tier PAC-10 (see UCLA) or a mid level MAC defense (see N. Illinois). We better put the hurt on them this year.
