UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Vols or Vandy? Which looms largest?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
So which of Georgia’s next two games concern you more?
Tennessee? Or Vanderbilt?
The politically correct answer right now, I guess, is Tennessee because, well, that’s the next game. And of course the Vols were the last team, before Alabama, to beat the Bulldogs.
But if Vanderbilt ever looked like a respite in the Alabama-Tennessee-Vanderbilt-LSU-Florida stretch of Georgia’s schedule, it no longer does.
Vanderbilt is unbeaten (Tennesee thrice-beaten). Vanderbilt is ranked No. 19 nationally (Tennesee unranked). Vanderbilt beat South Carolina by the same margin Georgia did (seven points). Vanderbilt beat Ole Miss, which beat Florida a week later.
Mark Richt had some interesting things, I thought, to say about Vandy on the SEC teleconference Wednesday.
“Your fans don’t want to hear you lost to Vanderbilt. And then they don’t want to hear Vanderbilt is a heck of a football team. But they are a heck of a football team,” Richt said. “They do have athletes; they do have speed; they do have what it takes to win.
“We played South Carolina, and South Carolina had just gotten beat by Vanderbilt, and everybody is like, ‘If Vanderbilt beat them, you guys should certainly kill them…’ I’m sure everybody was expecting Florida to kill Ole Miss because Vanderbilt beat Ole Miss…. But we got out of that South Carolina game by the skin of our teeth, and of course Ole Miss pulled the upset.
“Vanderbilt is not some kind of one-time lucky deal. These guys are legit.”
First, though, a week from Saturday, Georgia has to deal with that other team from Tennessee.
A few links for your perusal:
CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd finds it amazing that Vandy, Duke and Northwestern have combined for one loss, while Florida, Georgia and USC have combined for three.

After Alabama’s big win in Athens, Sporting News’ Matt Hayes and Dave Curtis ask themselves if Alabama can run the table. No, they decide.

Tim: I read where Vandy is last in the SEC on offense….and defense.
You can only rely on turnovers and special teams for so long.
UT is a bigger game.

Mr. Tucker, Interesting point, and your right. Vandy is in my opinion a better team than UT, at least right now and I believe will prove to be at the end of the year. UGA needed this week off to game plan for UT and Vandy. I know coaches and players always say one game at a time and that is absolutely true. But you must get in as much preparation as possible when you have a week off. UGA will spend more hours preparing a game plan for Vandy than UT because of the type of offense they run.

ALL games from this point are important-EQUALLY! It’s Thursday morning, and the game with AL needs to be in the rear view window. BUT, the obvious shortcomings exposed in the AL game CANNOT be overlooked. The poor coaching preparation; poor game plan; and, lack of focus by players and coaches alike. These factors cannot be ignored or repeated if the Bulldogs are to win the majority of their remaining games. Yes, the final score was respectable. Sort of. Bottom line, GA got smoked in the first half, and the game was over. This trend if big games is troubling. You bet, the national media is rocking the Bulldogs. The big stage was set, and the team, coaches, et al spit the bit. They have a long way back in earning respect. That road begins with Tenn. and continues with Vandy. Bobby Johnson has quietly built a solid program. To take Vandy lightly sets up another Homecoming loss like 2006. Sadly, college football has been turned into a big revenue producing blood sport. Coaches and players are paid big bucks to generate the income stream. Time to earn their pay. The season is still their’s to make or break.

It is amazing to me that so many people in this part of the country (and I’ve lived here 57 years) don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re”, “want” and “won’t” and “there”, “their” and “they’re”. I guess “backwards” is right.

Tennessee? Or Vanderbilt? They both loom largest! This team cannot overlook anyone. Even Bill Lewis looks like a defensive genious compared to Willie Martinez. Martinez is a decent position coach. As a defensive Coordinator he holds his own against lesser competition; but his soft defensive schemes are no match for a real SEC opponent. The offensive line is light years from being even adequate. Our kick coverage has to be the worst in the NCAA. This team has AT LEAST three more losses coming unless they pull a complete 180 like last year. Would everyone please stop talking about a national title!?! This bunch is going to have trouble winning the state title!

A LOT of people are overlooking UT. The main problem has been at QB and some stupid plays.
UT’s defense has been very solid.
If Crompton doesn’t fumble another handoff vs. Auburn, they beat them. (same thing vs. Florida…it could’ve been a much closer game)
I think you’ll see a much better UT squad this week with a new QB.

Tennessee’s defense is very solid. If our lines don’t shape up, it will be a long game. Skill positions are a big advantage for UGA, but they can’t do anything lying on their backs. There will be no more “easy” wins with this group of dawgs. Our Oline is not what we thought they would be. Our Dline can’t pressure the QB. Even Crompton may step up and have a good game if he has all day to stand there. Stafford and the backfield will have to play extraordinarily to make big plays and break tackles, because our line can’t slow anyone down. Stafford has 3 seconds MAX to get the ball off.

The best and worst thing about our schedule this year is that NO GAME if a gimme. No week is a “sleep walk” win. This will do 2 things. First, it will keep us focused week to week. Secondly, it will speed up our teams learning curve, helping us mature more quickly.
You can bet UT believes they can beat us. Bama sure did and you see what happened there. UGA coaches and players better no look forward because UT knows how to embarass UGA and they will if they get the opportunity.

CMR needs to evaluate EVERYTHING. Way TOO MUCH TALENT in Athens to have the deer in the headlights look. Yes, like somebody said before this post, We do ok with middle of the pack teams. Big teams, big stage ( except Fla last year, and they were not that good last year) we kind of get rolled over. We react to much on defense instead of attacking. CWM takes very few chances. With no pass rush, he better start. Hell, Smelley at SC might get drafted because of the Georgia game. These are all 4 and 5 star players……..Coaching ????????????

GA SOUTHERN & CENTRAL MICH were not sleep walk games? If you had of played someone from the Big 12, ACC, your current weaknesses would have been exposed, and corrective action could have been taken..With the schedule you have left, 2-3 losses are possible….UGA fans made such a big deal of the pre-season ranking, a wiser course would have been to say whats our record and ranking after eight games….During my travels to various SEC schools, I can assure you they all dislike UGA…

Good morning southerners,
I think the Outback or Chick Filet Bowl looms larger for Georgia at this point. Possibly the Music City.
Whereas, THE Ohio State Buckeyes will likely “loom” to the BSC Championship game in Miami or worse case, the ROSE Bowl in Pasadena. For those of you who have television, you can plan on watching us play when your season is complete.

tjs,
“During my travels to various SEC schools, I can assure you they all dislike UGA…”
Everyone in the entire country dislikes UGA primarily due to their obnoxious fan base. That’s why they always get shafted in the polls and bowl games. In my opinion, Georgia could go undefeated in the mighty SEC and the pollsters would still try to find a way to screw them over. And rightfully so.

It’s simply unacceptable the way we played against Bama in the first half. We’re at home, we know what Bama’s going to do, the crowd is into it, and we lay an egg? I don’t get it. We’re supposed to have all these top 10 recruiting classes every year….well where are all these “studs”? I’m sick and tired of GA having a young & inexperienced O line. When are we going to have a line like Bama’s? Oh, and the defense! Don’t even get me started there. No pass rush at all! We only lost Marcus Howard from last year. We need to attack more instead of reacting. Typical Martinez defense. I wish we could get Will Muschamp to come back home.

Gut feeling tells me this one will be blowout. In favor of Dawgs! Vandy riding high now but I do not anticipate this to last. Do not get me wrong. Ofcourse this is the only way possible to gain respect on the W.W.L. and of the numerous sportswriters in non college football towns across america. They will also have to do this to overcome the atrocity of the maniacal frenzy that is officiating UGA games this season.

Dumb question. Tennessee.
Altamaha, I’ve suggested several times but never had any comments on an idea; try and bring David Pollack aboard as a position coach and groom him for the DC position. His beliefs would fit in with Richt and his energy and enthusiasm would be great!
By Mobile Dawg
October 2, 2008 12:40 PM | Link to this
Biff, Richt is still developing as a HC and he still has a way to go to answer the question from earlier in the year. Is he a great HC.
I too get frustrated with seeing the same mistakes seemingly repeated and our lack of discipline. My humble suggestion would be to research the War Room and mix some old school SEC football with the new and innovative offense. Dawgs need to learn to play physical with the Bama types. We lost that game IMO in the first quarter when we totally abandoned our formerly “vaunted” running game, along with the continued penalties. We should have continued pounding, or trying to pound the football against Bama’s front but going mostly outside the tackles. That’s the only way to wear them down. They didn’t have depth and we didn’t exploit it.
The difference between you and I are, as frustrated as it gets sometimes, I never get sick and tired of supporting the Dawgs.

Darn, an Ohio State fan in here talking sh*t already? Nice. Better watch out for Penn State, you know the team that will most likely win the big 10 this year? Maybe that will shut you all up for a few months.
Now, since this is a UGA related question…the answer is easy. Worry about the Vols. That’s it. One game at at time after the beating we took last weekend. It’s the only thing UGA can do. It’ll take the week off, and a great coaching job to beat the Vols, who while horrible on offense, have a tough and strong defense.
UGA has to come back and win, and win with confidence, not some close last minute win. They have to get their swagger back.
The main goal is to win the SEC East. That is still very much in reach, and it starts again by being able to beat the Vols on Oct. 11th.

I don’t think anything in my blog suggested that I am “sick & tired of supporting the Dawgs”. What are you talking about?

Vandy are you kidding? UGA shouldn’t lose to Vandy period. Auburn hasn’t lost to Vandy since Eisenhower was president. The series in the recent past with South Carolina shouldn’t be close as well.UGA was whipped thoroughly and in the second half Bamma was on cruise control. Even when the score became 31 - 17 Bama was able to score with ease to make it 41 - 17 and quash any hopes of a comeback. UGA doesn’t need to worry about Tennessee or Vandy, UGA needs to worry about themselves. I’m still the biggest dawg fan around but the game this past Saturday was a debacle and also was very embarrassing. There is a pattern developing here and the blowouts along with tight games with lesser opponents are very frequent. I’m sorry to other dawgs fans who think I’m too critical but I for one have taken off the rose colored glasses and don’t see the Emperor’s new clothes.

Dawgs will lose to Tennessee if they come prepared like they did against BAMA!! After UGA was physcially whipped - team psyche is low - injuries are mounting, OL is too young - Defensive pressure is lacking unless their is a jailbreak blitz. Yep - UGA is in trouble.
I would rate UGA in the SEC “PACK” where teams beat each other and need a fumble recovery in the end zone to win (like UGA over SC).
BAMASTAN”S PREDICTIONS FOR UGA SEASON
VS Tennessee - Vols shock Dawgs for third win in a row in low score “Knife Fight in a Ditch” game (like UGA/SC) UGA record 4-2. Say what you will about VOLS - they have blown UGA out the last two years in a row. The Vols brand of football is more physcial than UGA - and their back is against the wall.
UGA record 4-2
VS. Vandy - Dawgs win UGA record 5-2
AT LSU - LSU wins - Dawgs fight - but OL and DE’s still and issue - 28-17. UGA record 5-3
AT Florida - Gators WIN - Revenge is sweet for Gators. Tebow throws plenty in this game . Percy Harvin gets plenty of catches - which will open up the run and GATORS will control clock. in typical fashion Gators go up by two scores minimum by the time UGA gets something going and has to play catch up. Urban scores additional points at the end to rub it in. 42 - 17 UGA record 5-4
AT Kentucky - UGA wins - KY hangs for three quarters. UGA record 6-4
AT AUBURN - Low Scoring affair - another excellent “KNIFE FIGHT” between two teams going at each other. What the heck - UGA wins at Auburn. UGA record - 7-4
VS GT - UPSET Special - GT is improving and their new offense is tough to plan for. GT is playing physical - which is not good for a finess team like UGA. GT wins. 7-5.
UGA is overhyped, overrated - and too young in key positions - if Stafford and Knowshon return in 2009 - Dawgs will be a force to reckon with.
UGA plays Peach or Music City.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t UGA come very close to getting beaten by Vanderbilt last year? I seem to remember Vandy being close to scoring to go ahead near the end of the game, but fumbling it away to UGA. Georgia needs to worry about the next game first, but they can’t consider Vandy, or anyone for that matter, a pushover like they have in the past. That’s when they get cocky and lose.

AJC Beatwriters:
Could you please hire some Techies to fix your “Post a Comment” section.
(1) It shouldn’t load, run - essentially lock up - (which is why you get the double and triple posts), for 2-4 minutes after clicking the “post” button. That’s slower than my Commodore 64 from 1985.
(2) Half of my posts never show up (and other people are having the same problem).
(3) It also shouldn’t take “a delay of up to 5 minutes bofore your comment appears.”
You shuld make it so that when people log in to the AJC, they can only post comments AUTOMATICALLY under their login name. And only one person can have one login name. People hijacking other people’s Names is BS.
Bottom line is that your “Comment” section is way behind in the times and needs a serious overhaul. Pass this on to the geeks in tech support, better yet, fire them and hire some guys that know what they’re doing.

Cheez! In case you have forgotten it, CMR is taking this schedule one game at a time, so Tenn is on the scope. And for good reason. They probably are licking their chops to knock us out of the SEC East so that they may have company. I think the diagnosis of last year’s loss came out to be mental. What do we have to do to prevent that? One element of prevention is not to be looking ahead. Another is for all players to make sure we don’t have any scratchy internal team matters. Another is for coaches to all be on the same page.
You bet Vandy is good. We were lucky to win last year. LUCKY! And Vandy knows it. The Vandy , Tenn, Ken and FU games are the most important games we play for the rest of the year. I’m sure the off weeks are not all dedicated to one team except the last one, before Tech. If we don’t beat the tar out of each SEC East team, we don’t take the first step toward our goal, the SEC Championship and then the NC.
The dogs had to be encouraged by our fans remaining loyal despite a 31-0 score. Same with the recruits sitting in the stadium. Thanks go to you people in the stands. A good bit of the comeback, bulldog spirit the team demonstrated in the second half goes into the Sanford stadium crowd, especially the students.

Hey ARDawg - 31-0 at the HALF!!!!!!
You say I don’t know squat about the Dawgs?
This is what I do know - Dawgs were overrated, overhyped, are a finess team, good QB that still overthrows or underthrows off his back foot - Good DL in the middle - ineffective DE’s - atletic LB”S and DB’s - but defensive scheme is soft and easy to prepare for. Matinez is a deer in headlights.
Coaching staff is good - but not great. Good head coach and a nice guy - by the way - Ray Goff is a nice guy too!!!!
UGA will never win a National Title under Richt. Will lose 3 to 4 more games this year as UGA is too young is some key positions and injuries are starting to mount. Key injuries to your Soph Oline Left tackle and DL - Owens put UGA behind the 8 ball early.
While BAMA is a younger team this year overall - we were more senior in both lines - and much tougher and physical - which is the mentality of the program.
Richt recruits well - and will win games on athletic superiority - but not coaching. Look how West Virginia outcoached Richt a few years ago on the punt return.
UGA will basically be a little better than South Carolina - OLE Miss - and Vandy. But will be Donnan-esque - if you will - and average 8-9 wins a year. Very traditional for UGA over their football history - with an occasional double digit winning season.
For 2008 and beyond as far as trends are setting in - BAMA, LSU, Florida are the three giants in the SEC. Auburn, UGA, TN is the second tier - which is more distant this year as all 3 teams are breaking in OL’s, QB’s or whatever. Vandy and Ole Miss are trying to break into the second tier this year - which is excellent for them. KY and SC are behind Ole Miss and Vandy - but not by too much. Arkansas and Miss STATE absolutely suck this year.
AS for UGA - Defense needs to mix it up more - quite playing soft on corners - and attack - excellent sideline to sideline speed. Need to be more physical or better coached on getting to the corners. A BIG ISSUE that I see is that your DE’s are athletic and fast - which is good against Hawaii. But can’t do aquat to rush the passer.
OL is too young - starting true freshman last year and this year - not a good group at this point - too young - too weak - immature - does not f******* as a unit. The good news is that it is taking its lumps this year and has a promising future. Next year could be your payoff.
If Stafford and Moreno stay - your offense will be better - but again - UGA has never been a physical smashmouth offensive team - and it shows against the Big Boys.

Tenn and Vandy? Both should be close games since UGA obviously is vastly overrated. They have been ever since late last year. But LSU, dawgs aint got a prayer against the tigers. That will be a wholesale slaughter on par with the Bama game. UGA will definitely lose to Florida, probably a tossup with Auburn and Kentucky, and as Ga Tech continues to improve its pretty obvious the bugs will probably beat UGA along with everyone else. Let’s face it. Dogs were way overrated before the Bammers destroyed them. I hear dem dawgs went from black to black and blue after the Bama beatdown. Dem Bammer boys put a hurtin on Moreno, slammed Stafford to the ground like a ragdoll on more than one occasion and hurt him, and messed up a couple other dawgs. Dawgs just aint too good.

I am a big UGA fan. I pull for UGA every game. However, unless something changes they look like they could easily loose 3-4 more games. They just don’t look that impressive. If they truly are one of the top ranked teams in the nation they should run up and down the field all game long on teams like Arizona St. & South Carolina. I have a feeling if they beat UT it is going to be another “ugly” win. I know UT has some talent but they are way down this year. UGA 17 - UT 14.

Hey Bama Stan - your observations on the Dawgs are good - but here is where I think you are wrong:
In 7 years - Richt has won 72 games - winning 8,13,11,10,10,9 & 11 games - average of 10.29 games per season. This is a very good record - not Jim Donnan-esque.
Just so you know - Saban in 5 years at LSU won 48 games: 8,10,8,13,9 = 9.6 wins a year - also very good.
Throw in last years Bama team - which was looking very good - then collapsed winning 7 games including a bowl game - in 6 years - Saban has won 55 games = 9.17 games per year.
BAMA beat our butts - hey ….. it happens!!!!! But humble pie can be a good thing for a young team.
Good luck to Bama the rest of the year - I hope we can meet in Atlanta!!!!

Biff, you’re wrong about the run. We tried running with some success but abondoned it so quickly it never had a chance. Moreno gained 6 running around the right side on our first possession. You’re not going to do that every play against a physical defense but you have to keep trying. Seems I remember Bama not being able to run against our D that successfully the 1st quarter. They kept pounding us and with a balanced attack wore us out.
I agree with you on the physical aspect, both sides of the ball. Some games aren’t won with finesse, just blood, sweat, and tears. Also accept my humble apologies, I reread your post and your “sick and tired” comment was aimed at excuses, not the Dawgs.

Mobile Dawg, I accept your apologies, and you’re stand up guy for saying so. Bobo panicked and we had to abandon the run because we got behind so early. The problem with this past game was our pathetic defense. That first half was atrocious and unacceptable. There is no way that Alabama’s offense is that much better than our defense.

BAMA STAN, just curious, what football championships has Bama won since 2001? UGA has won 3 Eastern titles, and 2 SEC titles. Newsflash buddy, you need to win a few RECENT titles before you can say that Bama is now among the elite in the SEC. The reason that I say “recent” is because I know you Bama fans like to live in the past of the old man who wore the houndstooth hat. That being said, you guys played great the other night, and I congratulate you on a nice impressive victory. The fact of the matter is that in football, I don’t care how good you are, you’re going to get your butt kicked every now and then. That’s the chance that you take when you walk on that field. You might want to listen to your coach when he said “don’t drink the kool aid”.

Listen little man you are more than welcome on the blog if you wish to discuss football and even talk a little smack but to be an arrogant little s** you really should move the fugg on because you’ll most likely be ignored unless its some other arrogant s** that responds to you.
We welcome all college fans with good conversation. Bama spanked us and we accept it, for now. Theres no need to be an azzhole. If someone is pretending to be you I apologize for the NATS but let up on the bullschinitz. If you are a punk, get off the computer and let your mother cruise the porn chat before she tans your little fanny

If I am not mistaken Bama has beaten Georgia once in the last four meetings? There is also a very good possibility they may play again this year. You saw the second half of that game. Are you so sure it will be the same result? Bear was a great one but he is dead and gone. I even like Saban but he is no Bear

If your satisfied with conference championships, than be happy, but don’t try to compare that to a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Georgia is 28+ and counting, this year will pass and you’ll still be outside looking in, 29+

UT is just plain awful this year. All UGA will have to do is show up Saturday and they will kick UTs sorry rear ends. UT’s offense is almost as inept as is Fulmer and his “coaching” staff. There is no discipline on that team. Please beat UT by 40 or more and help put an end to UTs misery!

Hey Bama Stan, Time to move on Bud, don’t you think? I guess all Richt has to do is read your post, make the necessary changes, and the DAWGS will be good to go for another double digit win season.Truth is we lost last weekend,ya’ll jumped on the DAWGS early, thats to your credit, however Georgia made adjustments at halftime and ya’ll nearly give up as many points in the second half as we did in the first. If we win out in the EAST and ya’ll get by LSU, I betcha the rematch will look entirely different.
