UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Stafford: Dogs offense going to be fine
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Matthew Stafford insists he’s fine. He popped up and said he was all right after two Alabama players buried his head face-first in the Sanford Stadium turf in the third quarter Saturday and he said he was all right as Georgia medical staff escorted him gingerly out the tunnel after the game.
And Tuesday, Stafford said he was fine after he was held out of the Bulldogs’ first practice of the week. He dressed out in full pads for the workout but spent the entire session holding his helmet and standing behind the huddle as the offense ran through plays.
“I’m fine,” he told me following the practice. “They just didn’t want me running around. I’m good.”
No, he said, it wasn’t a concussion. He was just left with a pounding headache following the 41-30 defeat in which he was sacked twice and hit at least three times that. Physically, yes, Stafford is hanging in there. Nothing’s broken, sprained or strained. But heading to the midpoint of the season, Stafford has been beaten up nearly as much as he was when he was going through his public trial-by-fire as a true freshman.
Georgia’s offensive line remains a work in progress — seems it has been Stafford’s entire career — and Stafford stands as a walking litmus test as to how they’re doing so far. The fact that he could barely stand after Saturday’s game tells you all you need to know.
I’ve theorized here that the Bulldogs’ offensive line is simply not strong enough and mature enough to line up and run the football against SEC defenses. I’ve suggested they just scrap it and take a pass-first mentality. It seemed to work in the second half Saturday when Georgia put 30 on the board. Stafford disagrees.
“I don’t think so at all,” he said. “I think the guys are just going to have to keep working and growing. Last year we weren’t world beaters at this point. We probably didn’t run the ball as well as we wanted to or throw the ball as well as we wanted. We’ve just got to keep working hard and getting better. That’s the biggest thing, just showing some progress. They played a very good defensive line and set of linebackers in this last game and really didn’t play that bad.”
Stafford said no conclusions should be drawn from the startling first half of the Alabama game, in which Georgia fell behind 31-0.
“I think we realize we shot ourselves in the foot in the first half really,” he said. “We came out and the second half and played pretty good football. We really kind of dominated that second half. The first half just killed us. Nothing was really clicking. Offense, defense, special teams, nobody was playing well enough to keep us in it. That’s what killed us and we understand that. We just have to iron some things out.”
So there you go. Stafford says everything’s going to be fine and they don’t need to change there offensive philosophy, per se. You agree?

Ditching the Running game when you have a back as nice and talented as #24 along with returning perhaps the best FB in the country could be one of the dumbest things I have ever read on this blog.
All I have to say is….dude.

UGA haters all will not agree with this, but Bama was not coasting in the second half, they were not playing the second team. They played against some p** off, embarrassed Dawgs in the second half. Yes, Bama won, Yes they were the better team that night….but, The second half was different. I doubt there are many teams that could have done what we did to Bama in the second half after that first half. That’s why Saban was mad, he knows it. Maybe a blessing….time will tell. Yes, I would love to play them again. and we just might !

I’d feel a lot worse if they werent still one of the top offenses in the SEC in points, 1st downs, 3rd down conversions, passing. So obviously talent wise, there must be something to them. The production is there, if not the performance yet. Not strong enough, not mature enough. Sounds about right. But if that their problem, one thing for sure..that DOES change.
Obviously its all about timing. But I plan on being a Dawg fan for a long time.

Agree with D. Ellis. Ditching the running game is simply ludicrous.
DAWGS will be fine. Just focus on getting better each week (that goes for the coaches as well) and the rest will fall into place.
I support the Dawgs 100 percent. Keep your heads up!

Good to see Stafford’s confidence. It appears he is shrugging off the loss and moving on with the rest of the season.
Maybe we as alumni, fans, and supporters can take a lesson from this. Get over the hangover.

Second half comeback praise is ridiculous. Anyone that knows anything about football and anyone that watched the game could see that Alabama was of a different mind set in the second half. All they wanted was to not give up the homerun and played two deep zone. Running the clock out was the order of the day. And guess what, when Georgia got within 14 they hung ten on Georgia and that was it game, set, match. With 6:30 left it was 41-17 and Georgia with the strong armed greatest of all time QB had scored exactly one offensive touchdown. Georgia has a pretty good team and somehow might make it to Atlanta, but you should ask yourself this, do you want another embarrassment like that at the hands of Alabama?

Hey AJC, do you all realize that you are basically the only publication that seems to think Moreno is a Heisman contender anymore? There hasn’t been a real Heisman contender in the state of Georgia since Joe Hamilton got unfarily passed over in 1999! AJC, and all disillusioned fans, please get over it! And Georgia has done nothing to prove they are any better than Tech so far. So when do we get to “Meet our Yellow Jackets”, AJC? This biased journalism is nauseating!!!

Everyone should’ve known from the beginning that the line was young. Hopefully the Dawgs will use this game as a springboard (just like Tenn. game last year) and play some inspired football the rest of the year. Who knows what will happen if we make it to the SECCG and win the rings!

Saying dogs dominated the 2nd half is laughable. BAMA lost interest in the 2nd half, and the only thing they wanted to do is running out of the clock. If you take away the 2 TD’s made in the last 4 minutes when the game is totally out of reach and BAMA was totally out of the game mentally, GA only scored 16pts, compared to BAMA’s 10pts in the 2nd half, even when they are not aggressively compete with the dogs.
If BAMA kept their intensity as they did the 1st half, who knows what the score would be, 50-10? don’t really know. But once a game is out of reach, it’s not a smart thing to put the kids in physical harm any more. It’s simply not worth it. What happens to dog player in the meaningless 2nd half domination? they got a lof of players injured, which may endanger their future games, while BAMA has few injuries after a big win.
Dog fans, don’t win dumb, win smart.

Sick and Tired-AS a dog fan I totally agree. UGA was never really in that game from start to finish. Bama rolled from start to finish. There are some Dog fans who hve to take pride in something. I take pride in the fact that they didn’t quit, and judging by how well Bama played in the first half…and how poor UGA played in the first half….the score vould have been alot worse.
The onlty thing I disagree with to a certain degree is that alot of BAMA’s starters where still on the field. Any one can go back and watch the game. Young they are…but startes they where as well. And in a 2 deep zone as they where playing…there is no way you give up a fade route for a TD in a 2 deep zone, like the one Green caught.
And on another chance to play. Let’s say the roles wehre reversed. Let’s say UGA rolled to the win. Would you as a fan for Bama not want another chance in a high profile game like the SEC championship to play UGA again? Alot can happen between now and then. Bama could lose. UGA could lose. Bama could get some important players hurt. So could UGA as well. I speak for myself only as a Dog fan, but it woudl be a great accomplishment to make it to the dome number 1 and then to play you guys as good as you guys are would be a big challenge for UGA, and I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t like big challenges.
Bama has a great team and gret coaches. You guys should be proud. Defeating 2 top 10 teams befroe halfway through the season and earning that 2nd place ranking.
Good luck the rest of the year and hope to see you guys again.
And to Sting Attack-WE might wear pink…but only for you guys.

I dont think they shoud ditch the running game, but i do think they should be a little more unpredicyable in their run selections and when they actaully call a running play. Pass on first down or spread the field with 5 wideouts and run some draws. Teams are honing in on Moeno and stuffing him. Do we have any drag routes for the recievers? Its either a bomb or nuthing! Can we run some bootlegs or roll the pocket? The offense is very vanilla and watered down. Even with the stars that we have our offensive coaches are making them very easy to defend with these play calls. We seem to run the same plays over and over again.

Have to wonder when your down nearly 30 points, if running a quarterback sweep which allowed the Alabama players to head pile Stafford into the ground was such a great call. Must have been according to Bobo because he then calls a reverse with a throw down the field to Stafford. Thank goodness it was off line or the defensive backs would have finished off Stafford. And we’re worried about our offensive line with play calling like this.

Chip: History helps us…that’s why we need to learn about it.
Last year, as Staff alluded, we struggled with the OL and our running game. Sticking with it kind of made someone a star….Knowshown????
A pass happy offense at this point would allow defenses to pin the ears back and further destroy Stafford - not a good idea.

All I know, is we need to get into Atlanta in December. We need to play the kind of urgent ball that we have shown we can play, quit playing down to our opponents, and “get after their asses.”
If we win out from this point forward and win the SEC Championship, I see us in Miami come January.
By the way, don’t you love how the Techies and Gator fans are ragging on us? My brother-in-law calls me talking about “what happened?!” He a freakin UF fan?!?!?!?! UF got beat by the SEC basement Rebels… And Tech, don’t even get me started…

Chip,
If you get paid by your blog comments you gotta love it when UGA loses!
This is crazy! A bunch of grown men coming on here acting like sandbox bully’s. Who goes to Alabama’s papers and blogs on there sites? Who goes to Florida’s papers and blogs? UGA fans don’t care about your teams. No UGA fan goes to Gamecock Central! We don’t care about your teams.
What is it with the Yellow Jacket fan who feels so inferior that they come to the UGA blog and ask where is our, Know your Jackets? Wouldn’t that be a relevant question for your beat writer?
This is laughable the comments on here. Of course the points in the second half were garbage. If the shoe was on the other foot any sane UGA fan would say this. No way could Alabama come out and emotionally repeat that performance.
Florida..Auburn..Tech..fans remember that we still play you. Do you not think that the Dawgs are a little embarrased by the performance and will not play with a little more motivation the rest of the way? If not you are very naive or not a very astute CFB fan. Feel free to bark loudly now but remember every dawg has his day (Thank you Corey Smith)!

Chip-I got you. Haven’t seen the slip screen right under the line in a while. Since we have trouble at TE spot now, line up 4 WR and use the shotgun spread run/pass.
I agree with DAWGFAN 1911-The pass routes seemed to be based upon the players ability. We could use some crossing patterns to get the WR the ball in open field-as in giving them more of a chance for YAC yards. We use alot of wr swing passes/come back routes/out routes/go routes. Would like to see crossing patterns/swing passes to 24 instead of WR’s all the time.
Didn’t mean to sound so down on my comment to you Chip. But getting the ball to #24 in other ways thanthe toss and the lead would open more for the defense to defend.

With a balanced offense, there are teams against which you should run to set up the pass, and there are teams against which you should pass to set up the run. It has nothing to do with abandoning either. The two halves against Alabama were flawed because against their defense we should have passed to open up the run, and we did not until the second half. I could see it. Bobo should have.

Not much is being said here but the injuries are really starting to take it’s toll on my Dawgs. Every team has them but some more than others. And some tend to hit the most critical areas. Ours were the Offensive and Defensive line, and we have lost our best players there. We have also lost ALL of our blocking tight ends, We have lost the best FB to ever play at UGA and may never be back to full strenth this year. We have also lost countless receivers like Walter Hill. This season is starting to remind me of the Tennessee season about 4 years ago and when they were devastated w/ injuries and lost 4 or 5 games. Overall I think we have lost way too many studs to compete for the SEC title this year.

Has everyone forgot the pattern of last years team (which is 70% this years team)???
Every team and coach has a personality. Face it, Georgia starts slow and gets better as the season progresses. Losing to Alabama was a “Wake up” call…much like the humilitaion in Knoxville last year (except Alabama is a much better team).
This team will follow the same pattern. They will be playing their best football come November 1st. The only question is “Will their best be good enough???”

That will be BAD mistake to ditch the running game. Don’t allow the Bama game to change your offensive scheme. The Running Backs (ALL OF THEM) are fine. The Dawgs just didn’t show up the first half.
They allowed too many penalties, and they didn’t do a good job protecting Stafford. The young offensive line has to do a better job pulling and making some holes so that the running back can gain yardage.
Other than that, they will be just fine. I’m quite sure that they have a wake up call after playing BAMA. Now that the media pressure wont not be as focused on them as BAMA, LSU, and members of the BIG 12 Conference, Georgia can concentrate without any distractions and play some serious football.
Georgia can, and will be right back in the BCS Picture by winning out the remaining of their games, the S.E.C. East, and the S.E.C. Championship.

The second half gameplan wasn’t designed to impress the Bama fans. If you choose to believe that your team lost interest and just agreed to give up the 30, great. I doubt your coach sees it that way. No question there are strategy changes protecting the lead. That’s not the point. Not to us anyway, and we don’t care what you make of it frankly. The point is that you dont want to have a 2 week period and the last half of football you played, you didn’t even compete. Wondering if you have lost the ability to move the ball. Much better to at least know, although too little too late, you are capable of producing, when you actually get your act together. We will never be down by 31 points at halftime again this year, so the next time this team is behind in the score…..that’s exactly why this second half mattered to UGA. Didn’t matter to you, great. Why are you still in a UGA blog here on Wednesday? Don’t you have the college football world to go conquer?

Nobody is “ditching” the running game folks, but in light of the fact we do NOT have a sloberknocking line blasting open lanes for Knowshon right now, relying on the short passing game to help open up the space to be able to run seems like a sound suggestion.

In the third quarter Bama played a three man defensive front line / prevent defense - go back and view the game.
But to The Dawgs credit, Bama had to change tactics because the talent of our Offense began to show racking up 30 points.
Finally, even if Bama had not scored 10 points in the second half we still would have lost by 1 point.
Bottomline: When Bama wanted to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, they did.
The Dawgs must have a big win against UT to prove to everyone (especially themselves) they are a very good team.

Chips ideas sound goos but UGA is handicapped by a {guess what} young O line. The line is just getting their timing down on simple run blocking and pass protection. Now you want themto learn a whole new system of blocking for the spread O? AU has been working on the spread since last year and still hasn’t gotten the hang of it,now a bunch of freshmen and sophmores are supposed to learn it in two weeks? That is freakin’ brillant! I have an idea, now that the starting O line is finslly set why don’t they work on plays already in UGA’s playbook? Coaches should perfect the blocking for the power I, UGA’s bread and butter, before installing a five reciever set. It is amazing to me how much more effective CWM’s defense is when the dawgs ground game is eating up yardage and clock.

When CMR was offensive coordinator we ran a red zone offense down the field, churning out 1st downs and hardly ever went for the big play, this was frustrating. Now we are going for the big play too much, we are not setting it up and that is very frustrating. We have the receivers to play a spread just like FLA did when they won the NC. Stafford can get the ball out early and under the coverage and let those guys make plays and 1st downs. This will set the deep ball up, all were doing is going three and out, not good against an ALA team that has been scoring alot of points. What the hell was Bobo thinking having Stafford take the ball and run a sweep! He could have at least gave the guy a chance with a bootleg or better yet spread the field and gave him the option of running it or thowing it! BOBO YOUR PLAY CALLING JUST STINKS! AND FOR YOU MARTINEZ THAT GAME WAS AS PAINFUL AS THE TENN GAME LAST YEAR! A SOFT ZONE WITH NO PRESSURE AND RECEIVERS RUNNING THROUGH GAPING HOLES FOR A QUARTERBACK TO JUST LOB THE BALL TO!

Stafford is right - the Dawgs’ offense is going to be fine. You have to say that the Bama game was a fluke. By the time that UGA works its way down through the SEC schedule, and meets Tech, I’m afraid that they will be more than ready to put it to my beloved Jackets again. That’s only if Stafford, Moreno, and Smith stay healthy through it all. Let no Tech fan pray for any of them to get hurt, because the Devil does not answer prayer.

31-0 at halftime. Yeah, UGAs offense is going to be just fine. Whats gonna happen when you play against another physical defense, Like LSU,Flordia,Georgia Tech, and Auburn. Georgia your in a rude awakening if you think your offense is alright. You have a “heisman” candidate that doesn’t even get the ball but 5 or 10 times a game. Know”Show” Moreno is overated. But to see TECH fans, AUBURN fans, and OHIO STATE fans on here talkin SMACK to UGA,now that’s shocking!!Then again all you’ve got is talk.We lost to Bama by 11 pts. thats a fact. But we WOOPED Auburn a lot worse TWO years in a row!! GA tech EIGHT YEARS STRAIGHT !!! AND OHIO STATE ??? Do I really need to say it ?? ok I will. You might be able to beat an SEC team in your DREAMS!! Then again I doubt it.Keep talkin SMACK.I bet your coach is smart enough to know better!! We will see how OVERRATED we are when ya’ll have to PUT UP and SHUT UP!! Just like you did last time.KEEP TALKING.

Stafford is absolutely correct. The wheels simply came off in the first half due to us shooting ourselves in the foot. Had the fumble recovery not been negated by a major penalty on the first Bama drive, we might have won that game. Momentum can create strange situations in the heat of a battle!

Hey, Buckeye:
Georgia was beaten by a great team, but at leats they had the tenacity to put up a fight. I’m amazed that you have the gall to come on this website and diss the Dawgs when OSU loses to every decent non-Big-10 team they play!
At least Georgia plays a challenging schedule—not that dishwater midwestern slate. And now you guys still have to face Penn State, a better team than OSU in every facet. Imagine—competition from inside your own sorry conference! Will wonders never cease?
Close it up and leave the football talk to the big boys, wingnut. Your team’s done. Again.

UGA does deserve some credit for playing better in the second half., bc I think teams can build off that momentum for the future. AL did beat up & I realize part of that was probably bc they got a little bit complacent in the 2nd half. I know AL scored 10 pts. once we got back into it when they had too. You need to remember though that we converted a 4th & 18 that was called back bc of a penalt, then we were stopped on 4th & 28. We pretty much had t oso that to try to come back…so it wasn’t too hard for AL to score that TD, considering that they only had to go half the field to score it. So don’t discount our comeback by saying that AL scored 10 pts. once they were threatened, when the only touchdown they scored was pretty much handed to them. UGA’s youth & injuries have caught up to them, & not to mention the penalties, which may have a lot to do w/ the youth. CongrataAL fans, you beat us, but I was just glad we came back to at least make iot respectable.

We all knew what a big loss Sturdivant was… we did not know just how good Bama was! I think Bobo has to mix it up… continue to run it regularly, but what is wrong with quick slants and short out patterns? We should run a lot of timing passes that hit quickly. The play action attack will mean nothing until the line can block the big boys… LSU is right around the corner.

Saturdays loss rests squarely on Mark Richts shoulders period. If Richts wants to get his team to ratchet up a notch , well he himself must do the same. While Richt is a remarkable person and has a lot of qualities he must lean a little harder on his team. Case in point, Richt lets his team off a few days before practicing to prepare for Tennessee that yes, is two weeks away. I think Richt should have sent his team a message and done just like what Urban Myer did at Florida. CMR should have his team practice hard this past Sunday for an actual timed 30 minutes of called plays. That would get the teams attention for standing around for the first 30 minutes of the first half. The guys who committed stupid penalties would run the bleachers until they puked. Richt needs to lean on his coaches as well and stop the Fabris and Martinez bickering and start coaching. Sadly Martinez has some issues in his defensive coaching philosophies. Everyone including Fans, sport pundits and opposing fans know that UGA for the past few years know Martinez has soft coverage issues. The solution if it doesnt improve by seasons end is simple…Will Muschamp. Now before all you dawg fans who think that I think Richt should be just like Myer are wrong. Richt has character and Myer doesn’t and that is enough to make my point. Richt also needs to take a hard look at his strength and conditioning program at Georgia because of the mounting injuries. Lastly the players need to stay away from the media and quit making silly videos and answering questions on who they would like to be stuck with on a deserted island. Its time to get focused , players and coaches alike. Go Dawgs and GATA!!!!

aarth, it was respectable on the scoreboard because Saban has class. He chose to quit scoring. UGA did not stop the Tide from scoring. From the looks of things, we should pull Florida into the SEC west and let the SEC East be annexed into the ACC or Big East or somthing. Stupid blackout gimmicks aren’t needed by real teams.

Stafford will become a very accomplished qb in the pros. But he can’t hold a candle to the top 4 Big 12 qb’s. Accuracy and “touch”, the lack of both, will continue to plague him throughout his college career.

Bama is the most awesome team since the stuffed Bear Bryantm Give me a break. They played good football, we sukked. Penalties wiped us out of the first half, oh and the fumble reception. You take away those, we win. But to Bama’s credit, they took advantadge, as a great team should, and waxxed us. We were the problem, Bama had the soloution.
If running up the gut does not work, try something else. I hate it when a coach says we are not going to get off our game plan. Battles are won, not strategicaly but tactically. You take what the enemy gives you. See the battle of Midway for answers.
Screens, dumps, toss sweeps and shovel passes will open up the running game. Heal up an get ready for the Vols.

Well, let’s see now. Remind me again what is going on ? 4 Top 10 teams Lost Saturday. Florida Lost to a horrid Ole Miss team, and Tim Tebow CRIED AFTER THE GAME FOR ALL TO SEE, apologizing through the tears. vols’ Phillip Fulmer is ONCE AGAIN 1-3 with the lone win over hapless UAB, not that UCLA is not hapless, or how un-hapless is Florida losing to to the likes of Ole Miss, and as for hapless a 1-4 team Mississippi State holds Auburn to a 3-2 win, and the vols lose to them too.
Excuse me, we are in The SEC East, last time I looked.
True Florida doesn’t play either Alabama or Auburn this season, like UGA does. But, I hardly think that we are not fine too.
Despite the ramblings of 1 writer found daily in the back pages of the AJ-C sports section, never on the Front Page.
The AJ-C prefers to talk up Georgia Tech on the front page anyway. Let’s see Georgia Tech plays Duke.
Nice “game” Georgia Tech. And, Georgia Tech has already Lost to an Unranked horrible Virginia Tech team. In a lousy conference who doesn’t have a good team.
But Tech is doing great, and UGA who lost to the Number 2 team in the nation 30-41 at home, is not.
Excuse me. Georgia Tech is not ranked in any poll and UGA is Top 10 in the only BCS Poll that is out so far.
Good try on that spin.
We are fine.

Dear SickandTired - I disagree with anyone who thinks that Bama let us back in it in the second half. To say they laid back and tried not to give up the homerun is meaningless, bacause that was Willie Martinez exact strategy in the first half! We just didn’t execute. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that no team “lets” the other team score 17 straight points. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that the second half is where the rubber meets the road. It is where teams adjust to the package they have seen in the first half, and it is where the stamina and depth of a team are displayed. Any team can come out and play great in the first half - while they are fresh and pumped up. But you got to play all 4 quarters. Face it -the Dogs adjusted at half time, fought back, and won the second half, 31-10. Yes, it was too little, too late. But take it from someone whose other team layed down in the second half (see UVA lose to Duke, 31-3), the Dogs put up a fight and made a game out of it.

FIRE MARTINEZ then we have a change to beat Tennessee and the others. I do not believe in him. He can beat mediocre teams but UGA has enough talent to do that on their own. Martinez is out of his class. He needs to go to a high school or class AAA.

Four receiver sets seem to work well in the second half of the alabama game. hope to see harris used more this game. fifth year senior with good hands who averaged 15 yards a catch 2 years ago. wonder why he has not been utilized more this year?
