UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

No. 1 slot back up for grabs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
How ‘bout dem Beavers?!
A 25-point underdog beat the nation’s No. 1-ranked team.
So I’m lying in bed watching the USC-Oregon State game, trying to be quiet and not disturb my wife and waiting for the Trojans to make their inevitable comeback so I can watch SportsCenter.
Only the comeback never comes. Then No. 44 for Oregon State picks off a Mark Sanchez pass and nearly returns it for a touchdown. Then little Jacquizz Rodgers punches it into the end zone for a touchdown. Then the Beavers miss the extra point. Then USC almost returns the kickoff for a touchdown. Then the Trojans score. Then the Beavers handle the onsides kick.
And then it was done. No. 1 USC was goes down 27-21 in Corvallis to a team that lost to Penn State 45-14 just last week. Rogers — 37 carries, 186 yards. Monumental upset. History repeats itself two years later.
My first thought: Georgia drops a spot winning by 28 at home and then drops another spot after winning by a touchdown at South Carolina; so what happens to Southern Cal after goes down to a team that lost to Penn State by 31? Proof yet again you can’t play the score game.
Anyway, the easy answer is the Dogs will go back up to at least No. 2 IF they can get by No. 8 Alabama Saturday night in Athens. And that’s a huge, bold-faced IF. Who knows, with a very strong showing against the Crimson Tide they could leapfrog Oklahoma back into the top spot. As fickle as voters seem to be this year, anything could happen.
But that’s getting way ahead of things. More than anything last night’s events set the tone for the college football season. It indicates it may be like last season, when everybody was losing to anybody. We’re getting into the meat of the conference schedules and, as was reiterated yet again, crazy things happen in intraconference play.
Anyway, back to Georgia-Alabama. You can bet Thursday night’s game got both teams’ attentions. It’s not like they needed anything more to be jacked about this game, what with the blackout, 7:45 p.m. kickoff, ESPN’s “College GameDay” in the house and all.
I was going to test you bloggers’ creativity and ask for your best sign ideas for holding up behind the GameDay’s set Saturday morning. I guess Saturday night’s happenings can only spice those up. So let’s hear it.
Let me hear your best sign ideas. Let me hear what you think the outcome is going to be Saturday night in Athens. Name the score. Tell me what kind of effect, if any, you think Thursday’s USC-Oregon State will have on this one.
No. 1 goes down. Let the dominoes fall. Gotta love college football!

To lose on the same weekend USC loses would be agony squared.Lots of ink has been spilled about the respective lines on both sides of the ball with the edge given to Alabama because we’re so young. But I believe (hope) Matthew Stafford is the difference in this game. Dawgs by 4.

When UGA knocks off Bama it should be #2 with Florida #3. OK new ESPN media darlings at #1 with NO teams left on schedule! Look for a group of SEC units in Top 10. Man, I feel great! Glad to FINALLY see tremendously overrated USC exposed! Now if only the Mets can choke their way out of playoffs again all will be right with sports world. GO DAWGS!

I have to work in the morning to mid-afternoon, otherwise, my sign idea would win the contest.
Y’all are welcome to copy it.
A poll of some kind, like a broomstick or mop handle. On this poll is, stacked bottom to top, a box of Tide, a package of toilet paper rolls, and a box of Special K.
What’s that spell, people?
Special K ROLLS Tide!!!
That’s right. It takes those idiot redneck’s special roll tide roll sign, flips it around, and makes it all about the greatest running back in college football, Knowshon Moreno!
Special K ROLLS Tide!!!
I want to see someone with that sign on Saturday morning as I’m getting ready for work!
It’s my idea, but I freely give it away for the good of the Dawgs!!!

I flipped on the tv in the 3rd quarter after getting a call and hearing that USC was down 21-0.
I immediately called a friend on the west coast (USC fan, naturally) and discovered he was on a 7 second delay from my broadcast because he has satellite.
Do you know how much fun you can have when your broadcast is ahead of someone else’s who is already stressed out because their 25 point favorite is already 21 points behind?
Those 7 extra seconds can allow an imaginative person to fabricate all sorts of scores, interceptions, penalties, etc. I think he hung up on me 5 times in the second half.

Saban and Richt will tell there teams that You always have to play hard, and play hard in any game. If UGA beats Bama they should be number 1. Undefeated in the SEC, and ranked number three, and then beat number 8 is number 1 in anybodys book!

I have a idea for a sign, “Hey tell me again why USC is the best team ever again this year.” And another thing that bothers me about ESPN,is they are making a big deal out Mark Richt calling them out about not showing Knowshon’s leap over the Central Michigan player. All they wanted to talk about was Beanie Wells. Have you heard about Beanie Wells getting injured? “Live report on Beanie Wells injury.” “Update on Beanie Wells injury coming up in ten minutes.” “Will Beanie play against USC?” This is all they were interested in and nothing else was important.
By LifelongDawg

Who’s Beanie Wells?
I’m ecstatic that USC lost. How big that turns out to be is based on the Dawgs handling Bama easily and Oklahome struggling to beat TCU. If that game is a blowout the Sooners may be able to hold off Georgia for a couple of weeks.
Most of all, though, I’m glad the Condoms lost.

USC is still loaded at every position on the field. This game to them is like South Carolina to UGA. Granted, the Dawgs pulled it out this year. USC wasn’t going to stay #1 for long if the SEC teams at the top continued to win. Their schedule is a bunch of JV teams this year. They got caught sleeping… And it was fantastic to watch. GO DAWGS!!!!!

Also, the good thing about having a schedule like ours is there is no down weeks to overlook teams like what we saw last night. Everyone was saying that the schedule is what was going to keep us from playing in the NC game. I think that it is what is going to help us.
Does anyone know why there is always a Washington State flag in the background during game day?

I predicted UGA will lose at least one game this year and possibly two. Got a feeling this will be the one. I have watched UGA’s o-line closely against Arizona St. and this matchup with AL does not look good. I sure hope I am wrong.
But if UGA only looses one game, at least it is early and against a Western Division opponet.

Chip,
Good stuff. At 9 I was watching The Office season premiere and flipping it two the game. The first time I flipped it it was 7-0 then probably 40 minutes into the show it was 14-0. At that point I was met with the do I watch the game or what if I jinx them!
Anyway, I stayed up , in bed with the TV turned down low. An occasional fist pump, but trying not to get yelled at by the misses.
I was concerned on the two 3rd downs in the second half when Riley seemed to try and out think the room. Running wide on 3rd and short then passing on 3rd and short.
USC is toast. Top contenders: OU,UGA,LSU,UF,MIZZ,UA. A one loss team out of this group goes to the NC game.

I believe USC is still one of the best teams, if not best at this point. This is what happens when the media proclaims you as the best of all time. You just show up and expect a blow out. Happens to USC all the time. You would think that USC could see that. Now, I want an explanation why UGA was dropped in the polls. Proof shows that it doesn’t matter if you win big or small; as long as you when you should be able to keep your spot in the polls. Go DAWGS #1

Chip,
I watched every play of that game last night and what I saw was truly amazing. USC was NEVER in the first half of it. The Beavers dominated the ball on both sides for two quarters. I had a feeling the third TD just before halftime would be key to winning that game. Like you I figured USC would come back in the second half.
In the second half USC played football at the beginning of the 3rd quarter but less so in the 4th quarter.
Although the Beavers won by 6 points, anyone watching that game saw the score did not reflect how badly The Trojans lost.
Congrats to Oregon State on a huge win. Hey ranking voters - how biased can you be NOW. USC lost to an unranked team that just a week earlier lost to Penn State by 31 points.

USC will sink and the Tide will rise. In my opinion, probably to number 2 in the polls because they will physically attack Georgia for the entire 60 minutes. Just like the Clemson game, the Tide has a lot to prove, and they will not let up. I do think Georgia has a great team but am not sure they have enough street fighter mentality to endure. Not sure they are willing to get as bloody as Alabama is.

USC and Oklahoma both have pillow schedules for the rest of the year. UGA is up against the best teams in the country (Florida, LSU, Alabama, Vandy, etc.) UGA, Fl, and LSU should be 1, 2, and 3. But there is no respect for SEC until you get beat by them. Southern football is real football. Go dawgs.

I stayed up way too late last night only to find out I was 2 days early to the wrong funeral. It makes ESPN’s game day look genious. This game with the Dawgs and Tide is huge now. It’s just the thing to jack up the Dawgs for this game.If the Dawgs win each game gets bigger. USC has done 2 great favors in the last week, beating the Buckeyes was the other. If Southerland is healthy to play this week-end it may be just the thing to shore up against the Tide’s defensive line and give Stafford another half second to throw the ball and just the crease to squirt Knowshon thru the hole. If things click we’ll bury the Tide and that’s a hell of a lot better than 2 funerals in a week with the BCS standouts. GOOOOO DAWGS!! WOOF WOOF!!

Pardon me for patting myself on the back, but I called ths 2 weeks ago when the Dawgs were dropped to the 3 spot. I said that USC was over confident going into their patsy schedule and would lose a game they were supposed to win easily. It happens almost every year.
The Dawgs benefit this week because BAMA is also overrated at this point in the season. Yes they played well against a mediocre Clemson squad and deserved praise for that win, but to place a team playing that many freshmen at #8 in the country is a stretch.
Clemson fell behind early, paniced and went exclusively to the pass, abandoning their running game. I think Spiller had less than 5 rushes in the game. I don’t see Bobo making that mistake.
Don’t get me wrong. This will be a tough SEC game for the Dawgs, but aren’t they all?

Hey Everybody!
I have the answer to your Washington State Flag Questions.
The Athletic Department at WSU would love for gameday to come visit one weekend. However, In gameday’s history, the crew have never been to the WSU campus. Who could blame them though? When was the last time Washington State played a nationally important home game?
But anyways, the Athletic Department at WSU send’s gameday a Washington State flag every week and they get some fan in the gameday crowd to hold it up. WSU says they will continue the flag tradition until Gameday comes to their campus.

USC’s loss has nothing to do with UGA right now.
Everybody keeps talking about UGA getting popped in the mouth in this game and how they will handle it. Seems like we hear something similar to that almost every year. My question is what is Alabama going to do when it gets popped in the mouth? This young team has had it pretty easy up to this point. Everything has gone right for them. They seem to be feeling pretty good about themselves right now from what I can tell. How are they going to respond if things don’t go right for them? UGA will not give up like Clemson did. UGA will not give them touchdowns like Arkansas did. UGA will not give them anything. They will have to earn whatever they get. UGA is a whole other animal to anything they have faced thus far. They have not played in this type of road game yet this year. They have not played in a game with the stakes this high.
The question is not whether Georgia is tough enough. Georgia has already handled adversity. The question is whether Alabama is tough enough. I make no predictions, but the media has missed the boat with this storyline in my opinion.

Ok, last nights game just amped up Georgia and Alabama, this game just got that much more phyiscal. Dawgs fans don’t forget ‘Bama has a lot to play for also so don’t think for a second that it’s UGA onl;y playing for something. Good old fashion SEC football in it’s purest form will be on display Saturday night. I made this point several times, USC can’t win the close games and that’s a problem. I am a UF alumni and a very die-hard fan living in the ATL area. However, I am not delusional. I realize my Gators are very good but not unbeatable. We have weaknesses like everyone else (inability to run the ball consistently for one, tendency to give up the big play when it counts on D). However, these bandwagon Dawg fans are obnoxious. This is my third year here and the first two I didn’t hear a peep from them. After UGA beat UF last year, they are coming out of the wood work. A message to all Dawg fans: Your team is not unbeatable, deal with it. In fact, you will probably be a slight underdog against UF this year if everything goes according to plan and we saw last night how that might not happen. Just be real is all I am asking. Enough with the Dawgs are great postings and their gonna kick the Gators a**. If I remember correctly, your “unbeatable” Dawgs have NOT beaten the Gators 2 years in a row since 1989……that is a fact!

USC Didnt get Stunned, they just got beat. Plain and simple.
Yes I said it. I said earlier in the second week of the college football season. Now I am here to say it again. I said that the USC Trojans was an over rated football Team. They were a pretender and not a contender of being the best College Football Team in the country. The favoritism that the ESPN Sports Analyst such May, Cornheiser, etc.and the Sports Media had these teams such as The Ohio State Buckeyes, The USC Trojans, The Oklahoma Sooners, etc. as being Contending teams. Now I am here again to tell you and Sports Fans that those teams were only winning because they are in a weak conference. I will give some credibility to the Big 12 because there are some a few pretty good teams there. But to say that Oklahoma is the Team in the Big 12? No Sir! There are a few teams that I believe that are stronger than the Oklahoma Sooners. You have Texas, Missouri, and Kansas that I believe will beat the Sooners if they played one another. The Sooners just like the Trojans play non contender teams and put up high scores on the board. That does not mean that they are the great team that people think they are.
Some of the teams that USC OSU, and OU play on their schedule lack so much talent, you could probably place a Northside Warner Robbins High School (Georgia) or a Lowndes County High School (Georgia) or a DeLaSalle High School (California) against some of those Non Contending College Teams and those high school will probably beat them as well. if you want to name some Contenders, Watch the SEC Conference. They are loaded with numerous talent. Practically every year there are at least three SEC Football ranked in the Top 10. Last year The Georgia Bulldogs had their national Title Dreams stolen from them with the scam voting they used to leap SEC Power LSU over them. I’m not crying over spilled milk, but I am just pointing out how the sports media have their favorites.
We all know that The Ohio State Buckeyes should not have been there last year as it was indicative of the massive beating at the hands of SEC Power LSU. The you put another less deserving team in the Sugar Bowl against another SEC Power Georgia who handed Hawaii another brutal beating as well. Now the so called experts placed The SEC Power Georgia Bulldogs at Number 1 at the pre-season and because they played a School that you thought was not a so called Contender or a Division I AA and USC palyed a Division I Virginia and ran the numbers up on them, they should be number 1. Then here goes the following week, Oklahoma University run the numbers up on another non contender and Georgia Played a tough SEC Game against South Carolina and won a close game, you again decided to drop Georgia to Number 3 behind over rated Oklahoma.
Can’t you people understand strength of Schedule, and number of wins and losses? Right now the SEC dominates the NCAA in Football with at one time Five SEC being in the top 10. It has been proven that these SEC Football teams such as Georgia, Florida, LSU, Alabama are contending teams that deserves the media respect.

Similar to Oregon St 2 years ago, TCU upset Oklahoma but it was in Oklahoma. I’m not saying it will happen again with the stars lining up like they did 2 years ago. However, TCU is ranked and has an excellent defensive team for the level of talent that they field. Don’t be surprised if OU falls this weekend too.
My best guess is OU will win but not cover the spread though.

I’m here to say USC didn’t deliver when they had to.
Sanchez isn’t the big game QB we thought he would be and the defense waited to long to make the adjustments they needed to.
They played better in the second half, but champions need to step up when it counts, and they didn’t.
I’ll keep rooting for my Trojan’s (have all my life) and hope we win the conference. However a NC doesn’t look likely.
If UGA keeps winning and doing what they need to, they’ll get their title shot, and they will deserve it.
We’ll see how it all works out, but all UGA has to do now win, or at least keep it close and lose only one.
Maybe if USC wins out and the others loose 2 or get blow out we may get back in this thing, but I don’t see that happening.
Good Luck.

I think the wild changes in the polls last year and what we’ve seen happening this year already is a direct result of the biased and poorly informed poll voters putting teams who play in weak conferences in the top five. Georgia’s situation is symptomatic of a bigger problem.
We should NOT have polls until at least the middle of the season. Frankly, I think it would be best if no polls came out until AFTER CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
I know, that would upset ESPuke and their condescending talking heads and directors. They like to hype up the games between ranked teams and those little numbers in front of the University names help them do that. But our polls are a sham. USC is a good team. UGA is a good team. Are either of them so dominant that they can’t lose a game? NO. Both equally could be ranked number 1 and each could lose on any given day.

Hello PACWIN,
Remember me? We debated a week ago about the Trojans.
The Trojans are a good team. I didn’t believe that they should have been number one because I saw that this team is young.
Sanchez has a lot of growing to do. Their undisputed players are in the NFL now. I knew that. The PAC 10 conference is weak, and they will have the opportunity to win the conference.
But for a National Title? Nah, I’m sorry. The sports need to realize that.

The PAC 10 is a weak conference. There is NO COMPARISON between UGA’s and USC’s SOS. USC plays NO RANKED TEAM while UGA’s is LOADED with them. Georgia didn’t play their best game and beat the so called number 2 team in the conference and beat them handily.
Why is it that ESPuke commentators keep hyping USC? They keep saying if UGA runs the table they will get their NC shot, but if they lose one…then USC can get back in it. WHAT? SOS alone tells you that UGA should be ranked one or two even if they lose one. USC played nobodies and got beat. At least So. Carolina had been ranked. Why should USC even be in the top ten? I’d be shocked if they fell significantly. Let’s see where UGA falls if they lose a game.
This beauty contest with corrupt judges makes me sick. All that matters is the SEC championship. Everything else is gravy.

PACWIN,
Spoken like a gentleman.
I thought USC would go undefeated in regular season this year and hopefully The Dawgs would get a shot at ‘em.
Frankly, USC reminded me of The Dawgs game against UT last year when we got blown out - I knew we had very good talent but The Dawgs just didn’t show up to play & UT slammed us.
USC looked flatfooted and uninspired the entire first half. Second half they were jacked up and scored two TD’s pronto then a let down then a TD.
I think The Trojans are loaded with talent but were just not “On” for 4 quarters last night for some reason.
Good Luck & who knows what will happen - we may play each other anyway.

Eric,
Great posts. USC West is always over hyped and over rated. They went on a win streak a few years back. They play in a weak conference. How valid a measure is it that they won so many games and NC’s? They had to be good to go undefeated. But were they good enough for their so-called legacy to influence voting today?
USC is just one of many teams that could win a NC on any given day. It is ridiculous to let the past influence votes today. But that is the bias that exists. The voters are corrupt.

It was nice while it lasted, but the slide from the top of the mountain begins this weekend in Athens. Mike Dodo and the always happy and complacent CMR will be driled by Major Applewhite and Nick Saban further galvanizing the fact that CMR does not have the staff to win a title.
Bama carries many more national titles than the sub-par program in Athens and Saturday will prove UGA is overrated. Bama’s front four will dominate the line of scrimmage and the front 5 on offense will do the same, so just another W for the Tide.
After UGA drops to UA, the next demise with be death in “Death Valley” (aka Baton Rouge).

Predictions are our wild a$$ dreams come true, except with our Dawgs. To prove the ESPN and other media bias, I will make their predictions.
“Since the Dawgs think we are biased against them and their conference as evidenced by us putting our big-10 favorite(OSU) up top and setting up another conference to be #1 if they beat OSU (USC) then we run a Big-12 team between them and watch them squawk. Either way, we win because the winner of that Rose Bowl-contracted conference game will not lose a game and the loser can slowly be raised in the poll until we have it our way at the end of the season. The worst that can happen is to put OSU/USC in the Rose Bowl again. What a plan. The dummy fans will never catch on!
Since our second favorite conference has now lost, here’s the new plan:
1. Slowly raise BOTH USC/OSU in the polls over the next 8 games.
While doing #1, we need to prove we are not anti SEC or their teams. After the UGA/UA game we place FU as our choice behind OK when UGA wins. They (Dawgs) would really squawk then. We show that we are not anti-SEC and we reward the biggest(and only) bloggers from the SEC in our top 10 bloggers(Look to the right of ESPN’s title web page to see how many bloggers from each school are online with OSU far and away the largest #). We have a thing for Urban Crier anyway since he doesn’t like the Dawgs either. Think of it as the biggest diss we can ever come up with against the Dawgs. What can they say now? Who cares since we have everyone thinking they are dilusional paranoid about us.
When UGA beats FU, we run up the flag for Mizzou, Kansas or Texas as 2nd and declare the Big-12 as best conference since so many SEC schools have 1 loss. It works perfectly!
Since no one has caught on , we can do the same with the players, college and the coaches. What the hell! The College Presidents and the NCAA don’t object. Slive won’t call an SEC exec committee meeting until the season is over, too late for the Dawgs.
Ain’t life grand when you can make College Football political?
The above scenario is as sure to happen inversely as you place its probability in your mind. The more you think it can’t happen and you don’t have to speak up, the greater probability that it will happen.

Let me get this straight, UGAY hates ESPN because they tell the truth????
Knowshon for Heisman - hasn’t he only rushed for 100 yards in 2 out of 4 games this season? Mark Richt has whined him back into the top 5.
Maybe the reason that ESPN and the rest of the world aren’t impressed with his “leap” over a MAC defender is because we all have seen Sam McGuffie do it repeatedly for the last 2 years on Youtube. Apparently everyone but UGAYers have seen it and seen it repeatedly. It kind of lost its luster before Knowshon did it.

Take a look at the Heisman candidates. Can’t you see a Trojan runner and QB in there last week and Knowshon was out? Where are those candidates today? What great players that are unable to beat a 1-2 unranked team over which the trojans are rated by 21 points. The entire team only got 79 yds rushing. Their Heisman candidates (placed in the running as Knowshon got “only” 79 yds vs the best defense in the SEC at that time) didn’t even show up. I’ll give them this, though, they both were men enough to admit that it was on their backs. And Carroll gave “THE OSU”(we now have America’s new “THE OSU”) team full credit for beating them up front and running all over there big ole’ linemen. Sounds like something we can plan on Sat nite?
Who the hell is Sam Mcguffie? What? You had a small streak of wins after The Dawgs had beaten you like a drum for most of my lifetime and it was a “new series” for those pitiful years. Get used to it , gator. Your tail is ready to be fried and thrown into the yard for the Dawgs.

First off, I’m a huge Bama fan and hope we have a chance when the fourth quarter rolls around. I like our chances as our strength seems lie in our offensive and defensive lines.
My mother was a Corolla girl at Bama and she and my Dad had gone to a Bama game in Atlanta for Tech’s homecoming. She saw this sign painted on a sheet hanging from a fraternity’s window and I’ve never forgotten her telling me about it.

PACWIN:
I like the fact that you came back on here after the tough loss by USC. The Trojans have a good team but they obviously played poorly on both offense and defense against OR State.
USC will not have a shot at the title unless the other teams have 2 losses. Their schedule is just too weak with the PAC 10 going 0-5 versus the Mtn West last week. The Trojans can still win another conference title and go to a BCS Bowl which isn’t too shabby
The national title game will be a Big 12 versus SEC affair, even if both conferences best teams have 1 loss.
LSU, AL, FL, and UGA will battle for the SEC title and the winner will get ino the MNC.
TX, OK, and Missouri will have a similar battle and one of those teams is likely to have 1 loss or less.

Chip, after the C. Michigan game you stated that you believed UGA’s defense this year would be “average at best.” After watching the Dawgs last 2 games where the D gave up 17 total points and only 4 yards rushing in last weeks game, are you ready to amend those thoughts about the D?
I know today’s blog is about what signs to display in front of Gameday, but this is the 3rd time I’ve asked you this since last Sunday morning, and I now believe you’re ducking the question.

LifelongDawg-
You must have just seen College Football Live on ESPN-
I posted last night that I thought Holtz was starting to show a little respect toward the DAWGS-Cancel that thought. Alabama is going to win because it has a great running game. Whoppee crap-the DAWGS have a good running game also and a great defense.
I sure hope the Gameday analysis covers more of the different elements. Both teams have playmakers and very good technicians on both sides of the ball. Why isn’t Curran getting any recognition?
Either Holtz still has a stick in his craw when he lacked success at South Carolina. Maybe because the DAWGS record of 1000% against his beloved Notre Dame is his problem. Marks Nay’s problem is simple-he’s just an idiot.
These guys are not qualified to analyze Southern football.
PS-I just detected a typo above on Mark. Decided to leave it for obvious reasons.

Man up, go ahead and use a name, and talk football. Leave the insults and get into this blog. The amount of time you spend pretending to be me and my friends would be better spent analyzing the teams and why which one will win or lose. Go ahead and try it once, you will find that an intellectual discussion is more fun than pretending to be gay me and my friends. There is no way that Southern California should have jumped UGA to the Number 1 spot because the Pacific-10 is such a lousy conference. Oregon State ? Please. That team has zero defense, cannot punt, cannot kick even missing extra point kicks, and were not that good of a team in any game they have played. After all, it is the 1st time in 18 years that a Number 1 team lost to a team with a Losing Record.
Oklahoma, likewise, has played very poor opponents. Ohio State is a mediocre team that The SEC wipes the floor with every single solitary bowl game 9 and counting. And, because of that win that jump UGA who beat South Carolina who will go 9-4 this season. Oklahoma beat Washington. Good Lord Alive. Washington has a Losing Record every single solitary year.
If you look at the body of work, Alabama and Georgia have both done very well this season against good opponents. Now, we face off against each other, blacked out for 1 of our funerals.
Florida has an easy road to hoe this season, not facing Auburn or Alabama both of whom are obviously 2 of the top 3 SEC West teams.
UGA plays all of them.
And, UGA beat the best team, including their bowl game, that Southern California beat last season, Arizona State. We beat them at their house.
Alabama’s win over Climpson Farmers is a win over a mediocre team who cannot run the football and never has been physical. But, it’s a good win. So is Arkansas, but again, Arkansas cannot run the football either. Alabama has not faced a team who can run the football. Alabama most assuredly will face teams who can run the football the remainder of their schedule. Best of Luck to Alabama in facing teams who can run the football.
Alabama claims Alabama has an experienced senior quarterback. John Parker Wilson is not a leader. He might lead Alabama all-time with 42 Touchdown Passes, but he is not a team leader. And, at 17-13, he faces dropping to 17-14 as the Starting Alabama Quarterback. What kind of experience is that ?
By ............................................BuLLdawg
September 27, 2008 4:23 AM | Link to this
Alabama lays claim to the trenches.
I am of the opinion that Alabama can make that claim, after the game, not before it.
Ohio State made the same claim when pre-season once again Ohio State got lots of love to be Number 4 in most of the polls, that they too had an experienced quarterback. Again, experienced at what ? Losing ? Not being a Leader ? Exactly what they offered.
Southern California’s Mark Sanchez, Junior Starter who started 3 games last season, and Ohio State’s Todd Boeckman, Senior Starter who started 13 games last season, are like Alabama’s John Parker Wilson, Senior Starter who has 26 starts in the previous 3 seasons.
None are any damn good.
As for the dead last worst performer in the under-achieving over-hyped Big XII every single year. Oklahoma jumps UGA for wins over Chattanooga, Cincinnati and Washington ? God Bless America.
TCU horned frogs are a great team ? B.S.
Not that Oklahoma has beat them.
Or, Texas, or Kansas, or Nebraska, or Texas A&M or Texas Tech or Oklahoma State.
I am not concerned about Oklahoma.
I would like to point out that Okalahoma has a better quarterback than Southern California, Ohio State and Alabama.
Alabama fans are overconfident that they can shut down UGA’s running game and pressure Matthew Stafford in max protection mode then.
UGA will out rush Alabama.
And, John Parker Wilson is no Matthew Stafford.
As for Alabama being back. You are not back this season with a 17-13 Starting Quarterback after 30 starts.
And, as for next season, you will not even have John Parker Wilson, loser he is.
To all the Bama fans with their heads in the clouds saying you are going to jump all the way to No. 1 in the nation by beating UGA at Sanford Stadium tonight, you have not proven anything, yet.
By ............................................BuLLdawg

Alabama has not beat UGA the last 3 times in a row, 2002, 2003, and 2007. All 3 were high-scoring close football games, won by the team with the better quarterback obviously.
You will have to beat UGA among other teams, before you are back. And, that is not going to be this year, or next year because John Parker Wilson is a nobody who will not be drafted by anyone.
I concede nothing in the trenches. UGA will out rush Alabama.
And, I have news for you that we have a lot more than Knowshon Moreno, which you don’t have one of.
And, you also don’t have a Matthew Stafford, nor have you played against a Matthew Stafford while UGA has played 2 better quarterbacks already than John Parker Wilson will ever be. In fact UGA has played 4 better quarterbacks than John Parker Wilson including both of Georgia Southern’s quarterbacks, both of whom are also better than John Parker Wilson. I don’t think Spurrier has a better quarterback than John Parker Wilson, but if they had have, they would have won. You don’t. You will not win either.
ESPN College GameDay, Black-out, Alabama – Georgia in Athens, no gas, Prime Time Saturday Night Match-up, over-rated Southern California loses to a horrible football team in Oregon State, Oklahoma has played no one either, Funeral, and now game time with the No. 1 slot back up for grabs they cheated us out of last year and tried to cheat us out of again this year. I’d say we have a chip on our shoulder.
We have a football game, a very good one, ‘Tween the Hedges, where the game will be decided by who has the better quarterback. Sorry. That’s NOT John Parker Wilson. How in the Living Hell is this not a game between 2 college quarterbacks ?

What has UGA done THIS SEASON? The only decent team you played - the seventh best SEC team- would have been in OT with you save for a STUPID fumble on the goal line. If the kid runs to the pylon it’s tied. And SCAR doesn’t have half the front 7 Bama has yet they held you to 14 and abused Matty. Be as confident as you want but your team is about to run into the meanest, toughest, most physical bunch they’ve played in two years. Seriously, LSU is the only team I’ve seen that matches this Tide team’s physicality.

i am a dawg fan and have been for a long time and what gets me is the trash talking that goes back and forth and how people like to compare their teams success based on who and how they played and further more, i keep seeing all these negative conotations on how UGA played South Carolina and how UGA is a bad team based on this. Seems most of these people haven’t looked at history with UGA and SC, esepecially in recent years. that is always a close game, even in the David Green era when we dominated (well except for against FL), SC played us close then. That is the nature of the game. As for those who say UGA hasn’t played a physical team like bama, well, lets see if Saban is there in 7 or 8 years and compare their success then, because since richt has been at UGA, we have often played many games like this and won many of them. I expect it to be a good close game as is the nature of the SEC and for fans of either team to think this game is going to be dominated by one or the other, well, those with that mind set are sadly mistaken. GO DAWGS 27-24.

Winning is winning, i dont care how you chop it up. If you beat a bad team by 3 or a good team by 21, a win is a win and a loss is a loss. It is ridiculous that people keep making reference to our 7 point “LUCKY” victory over SC. A Win is a win and i promise, i would rather win every game by 7 points, “yes even against the bad teams” than to loose one. I guarantee you that if Georgia runs the table, their margin of victory wont matter. Winning is everything and UGA has never been a team to run the score up on anyone which people seem to forget all the time.

Ga has the talent edge and the experience edge in the big games. Add in home field and it makes sense to me why Ga is a 6 1/2 pt favorite.
Over the past 2 years…Ga has played great at times and yes…at times rather bad.
Ga will be up for this game and there will be an extra intensity to there step in the beginning of the game.
But what will this Ga team play like for the remainder of the game?
Sorry Bama people but you really dont have much say here. Either Ga comes out with there A-game and you get destroyed or Ga has one of there bad games and you may very well win.
If they play like they did against SC then Ala will win the game. If they play like they did at the end of last year…Bama fans will be heading for the exits by the second half.

jay,
UGA is not respected by ESPuke. I know they do some coverage. But many of the announcers are condescending to the UGA fans. They think we don’t understand that they hype games and teams because of television market shares. They are not really an objective sports news organization. They pretend they are “dispassionate” about the teams but “passionate” about the games. Of course that is bull.
Television and news media have too much influence on college sports. Their capitalistic bias is clearly seen in ALL sports. College presidents don’t want to marginalize news orgs because of the payout big games bring their schools. So they won’t give us a playoff.
We need a new system. At least hold the polls until conference championships are completed. Require all BC$ conferences to play a conference championship game. Then take the top four ranked teams(using BCS rankings)and use bowls as semi-final games. Add a NC game (plus one).
Give us a playoff.

The Gators were horrible today and deserved to lose. You can’t fumble 5 times, overthrow receivers open for multipe TDs, drop about 2 wide open passes for a first down and a TD (Louis Murphy), not make 4th and 2 with the game on the line, allow an 86-year TD pass on 4th and 12, and get a extra point blocked to cost you a game. The Gators are a much better team than Ole Miss, with a lot more talent, but they played like they were being coached by Ron Zook. Dan Mullen is the worst offensive coordinator in the SEC. All he did in the first half was run the ball up the middle. I was screaming about the play calls all day long. Percy Harvin…86 yards rushing and 186 yards receiving…and Dan Mullen only has him on the field half the time due to his having two tight end in the game most of the time. The best running back on the team is Moody and he does not play until the 2nd quarter…then runs the ball all over Ole Miss until he gets hurt and is out of the game almost immediately. Next to Florida losing to Miss. State under Zook a few years back, this was the worst I have seen a Florida team play in years…and certainly the worst I have seen them play under Meyer. Someone please tell Dan Mullen he is loaded with offensive talent and he does not have to run the ball up the middle every time with Tebow. I just knew the Gators were going to come out in a wide open set and get the ball to Harvin for a first down…no, they are running Tebow up the middle against 10 men up near the line. Mullen, you are killing the Gators with your idiotic play calls. But, you have not heard the last of the Gators, Georgia fans. Florida is still a very good football team and Meyer will get them back in the game, believe me. They will be ready for your team, you can count on it. This just makes the Gators an even more hungrier team. They still control their own destiny in the SEC East. And they will even get back in the NC hunt, too. Go Gators!

TampaGator,
Why is the offensive failure all Mullen’s fault? Meyer is the head coach. It is his offensive system and his Off. Coord.
The spread is a gimmicky offense that can give teams fits. But like all systems, it can be defensed. Tebow seems to call his own number too often.
As for going wide on offense…that works to a point. Unless you establish some offense up the middle, you can’t go wide consistently on screens. The other team must respect your run enough to give you good matchups on the outside.
I make it a point to watch UF play. They didn’t look any worse than they have in the other games I saw. They turned the ball over, but other than that, they looked the same. I think they just got out played and out coached.
UF and UGA are good teams. They are young and need time to develop. There will be ups and downs. I just hope tonight is not one for the dawgs.

The SEC East is certainly up for grabs. 12-2 still looks about right. Alabama looks to have to beat LSU to get to play us. We do better against Bama on neutral fields.

A word of warning to the bama fans…don’t get too hyped up. The same folks who ranked USC, UGA, and UF ahead of you guys are ranking Alabama too. Alabama is not all that either. UGA’s loss was a combination of things. The first half was the result of poor play calling by our defensive coach and unpreparedness of our team to play at the smash mouth level they should against good SEC competition. They were not prepared to do anything but what they’d been doing against lesser teams either.
The second half was more indicative of what the team can do. We blitzed more (a necessity when our D Line can’t get pressure on the qb. We did more hurry up offense (a necessity when your O Line is young and has not played together enough).
So to put it more plainly…UGA got whipped…out played and out coached. I tip my cap to the victors.
While choking down my portion of humble pie, I think it is good to remember that UGA is not out of the SEC race. Remember the second half and come out playing that way in the next game. Dawgs, true fans are behind you. It ain’t over yet. We might even get a second chance to beat Alabama this year in the SEC championship. So keep your heads up!

BCS Slave, the 2nd half could have been as bad as the first half. Alabama was set on cruise control in the 2nd half.
….and lets not forget about the clear block in the back that “wasn’t” called on GA’s kick return TD.
To put it honestly…Georgia only actually earned 10 points. The rest came during garbage time…and as I mentioned earlier the no-call on the punt return.
