UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

What should be UGA’s top priority?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It was really interesting seeing and reading about all the athletics facility expansion plans the architectural firm that Georgia hired came up with in its recent 16-month study, the findings of which were delivered to the athletics board on Wednesday.
The growth and the expansion of athletics faciliies — or the Facilities Arms Race as some of us have come to call it — have become as important to overall athletic success as having premier athletes, or so major Division I colleges seem to have concluded. The Bulldogs certainly are one of the nation’s leaders when it comes to facilities. They have everything they need to succeed. But many of them are becoming a little aged. So sooner are later they’ll all need to be renovated, expanded or replaced.
Certainly the most interesting to our readers, according to overnight page views, was the findings about the expansion of Sanford Stadium. With new donors having to lay out more than $10,000 just for the right to buy season football tickets this year, clearly it’s just a matter of time before they’ll need to add more seats. They have 92,746 now, which is the fifth-most among on-campus stadiums in the country.
Probably the most fascinated aspect of the study to me was the unwillingness of the board to consider closing in the West End of the stadium. I think all of us just assumed that’s what they’d have to do one day. But Damon Evans has always told me how they like the way the stadium opens into the rest of campus. And the way you can drive or walk down Sanford Drive and see into certainly is unique.
So we find out they have a plan that will allow them to expand to 101,766 seats without messing with that end. To be sure, it’s an elaborate plan that apparently will including building out and over East Campus Road and they will have to go to a lot of trouble and expense to pull it off. But clearly they’re putting a lot of time, effort and money into figuring this out.
Of course, it was a comprehensive study of all of Georgia’s facilities. Another interesting aspect was it doesn’t call for the building of a new basketball arena. That’s been heavily-debated point for as long as I’ve been around. In my opinion they missed the boat when they built the Ramsey Center over on College Station Road. But these latest plans call for extending the giant roof and expanding Stegeman Coliseum outward so they can build bigger and drastically improved rest rooms and concession areas.
There were contingencies for an indoor practice facility for football, which I’m sure coach Mark Richt noted. One plan calls for it to be on the current grounds where the track is (they’d move that) and another has it going up out on South Milledge Avenue near the softball and soccer complexes. But with the expansion of the Butts-Mehre Building already approved and halfway funded, I’m not sure how much of a priority that actually is.
So what do you think should be the top priority? Expanding Sanford? Renovating Stegeman? Blowing up Stegeman? Building an indoor practice facility for football?

Economics 101. You sell out now so either raise ticket prices or add seats. Everyone knows they would sell out 101,000 seats and there is a waiting list for the new 26 suites that would be added. Every year that goes by without adding seats the UGA Atheltic Association is falling further behind leaving money on the table.

I’ve gotta say that for as much as CMR and the football program bring in every year, it is LONG overdue that they should be supplied with an indoor facility. In the SEC, indoor practice facilites have become an expectation and if UGA is to continue to be an elite program they need break ground on one ASAP. That has to be priority #1.

I’d say expanding Sandford and redoing the exterior look of it. While the inside of the field looks nice, the outside of it is just a big piece of concrete. But yeah, I’d like to see us break that 100,000 mark. I don’t think they’d have a problem at all selling out of those tickets consistently.

I agree with kneeman. Anyone with economic common sense knows you expand the stadium to garner more revenue. With more revenue you are able to bankroll your other athletic projects. BUT, I think building CMR’s indoor facility is paramount in getting the best recruits to DAWGNATION so we can consistantly sell out our 101,000 seat stadium.

Expand the stadium (revenue generator) and build an indoor practice facility.
I have no idea why we need an indoor practice facility, but everyone else seems to have one and Coach Richt says we have to have one. My best friend had a 52” HD TV. I had a perfectly good 27” TV, but since I noticed “everyone else” had a 52” HD TV, it was apparent that I had to have one, too.

As a current student here at UGA, I am kind of sick of seeing all the construction everywhere I go. That said, I understand that the best way for us to get donations is via competitive athletics. I don’t think these new additions are necessary, but if they will give us the slightest edge in athletics then I’m all for them.
Also, if you haven’t clicked over and read Mr. Rosenberg’s stuff yet, you are missing out. Really funny and insightful analysis about the Dogs and other southern schools. He’s along the lines of DJ Gallo in the way that he combines satire and analysis. I’ll repost the link right here for anyone that missed it in the main blog. (http://otrsports.blogspot.com/)

I told anyone who would listen about Spurrier. You CAN NOT TREAT PEOPLE THE WAY HE DOES AND GET AWAY WITH IT FOREVER.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Expand Sanford and remodel the Steg. Burn down Williams Brice, it has got to be built on some kind of Indian graveyard and the ghosts are still mad.
I doubt they are going to be naming anything after SOS up in columbia. In fact, what is funny to me is that Rich Brooks has a great shot at having a street named for him in Lexington while Spurrier is scrambling for his job.

Absolutely loved the article linked above from the Gamecock Campus paper calling for Spurrier’s head. Thank you Chip!
While I am not a Spurrier fan due to his lack of respect for his opponents (those he has beaten and even those who beat him) over the years and his general lack of class… so I am clearly baised. I belive this article is even handed. Spurrier really hasn’t done much better than Brad Scott or Lou Holtz did at South Carolina. This is year 4 and unless they go on a huge winning streak, they will struggle to make a bowl game.
I believe he sold his football soul for a lifetime membership at the Augusta Country Club in choosing to coach at Suth Carlina.

I love the idea of adding seats to the stadium. As a recent graduate, I have a long way to go before I can get season tix and hopefully this can speed up the process for the other recent graduates as well. UGA fans would fill up Sanford no matter how many seats they added.

I too was surprised that they wouldn’t consider closing in the West End of the Sanford. It sounds like they want to take 3rd deck all the way around which would give the stadium a more symmetrical look. Our seats are near the West End during the GSU game while waiting in line for concessions I looked up they could easily move the score board back so that it’s next to the bridge then add a few more rows on. That would not change the ascetic of it being open to the campus but would give them a few more seats. One thing they really need to do as apart of this expansion is to spruce Sanford up. All of the entry gates & outside perimeter should be made to match the look of like gate 6 so that everything has the same look & feel. Get rid of the chain link fence where possible & replace it with the black rail type of fence that’s at gate 6. Speaking of the west end zone the gates & that entire area need to be redone. It would be cool if there was a plaza entry way area sort of like what Turner Field has that started outside the Tate Center & led you into the where Gates 1 & 10 are. The concourses & bathrooms need MAJOR renovations! Just go look at what AL & TN have done to there stadiums Sanford needs to be brought to that level or higher. Something needs to be done with Stegeman if they can basically gut it while keeping the roof since it’s a separate structure then build essential a new arena underneath it. If it’s doable I say move the roof then use it for another new building on campus then blow up the arena bowl. If not just implode the whole thing in order to build a new arena that matches the look of the new training facility. They need to ask CMR which he wants first the indoor practice facility or the stadium renovations then do those two projects first. Next would be the arena then the baseball stadium. The list if you’ll notice is in order of revenue generation so let CMR decide what football needs first then do then work in the rest of the list.

Chip Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have not been impressed with Georgia’s kick coverage unit. With Javier Arenas in town, this game could change drastically on one of his returns. Can the Dawgs keep him out of the endzone?
Alabama’s defense is very physical and just plain nasty. I expect their DB’s to jam AJ Green at the line and double team him early. Will this create an opportunity for Mo Mass and Tavarres King to make huge plays in the passing game? Every SEC football fan knows that in order to win on Saturdays, you MUST be able to establish the run AND shut down your opponent’s rushing attack? The battles between the tackles will be tremendous. Can the UGA defense hold Coffee and company in check? Also, can the Georgia offense have success moving the ball on toss sweeps and screens to Moreno?
Go Dawgs…Roll the Tide!

I want the 101K stadium, then maybe I can afford seats along the top row somewhere… I also want Richt to have his indoor facility. What about a “big top” style canopy of the the B-M track location? Hey, what about building a copy of “the cube” from Beijing? Show Dawgs highlights along the outside… Can you tell I don’t care much about round ball? However, b-ball teams need Stegman to me much improved, or replaced, or we’ll never get good recruits. So, how about another “All of the above” vote?

Quit planning, expand Sanford now — and reserve space somewhere for an expanded Student Section. I am in shock that students are shorted on tickets now. If a $10,651 cumulative donation is needed now for a shot at season tickets, I imagine that number will float upwards after Sanford is expanded (yes supply increases but demand will still outstrip supply). Figure (i) hold 2K tickets for students, (ii) balance of 8K tickets tied to at least $12,500 donations, and (iii) 8K tickets x $40 per ticket x 6.5 home games and you have $100 million upfront in donations and a yearly cash flow from ticket sales of at least $2.08 million (more when costs increase). In fact, with UGA’s share of the recent SEC TV package, UGA should waive the student ticket prices. Finally, because of the blackout, Bama’s funeral comment, and Munson’s retirement I think Sanford Stadium should be referred to on Saturday as “No Stadium for Old Men.”

The most important item is the indoor practice facility. The coaches have been asking for it for a few years. It definitely needs to happen.
Also, I didn’t take much in what the Alabama commit from Ga said. He wasn’t offered by UGA, neither were either of the other two players mentioned in the article. I don’t expect them to have good feelings toward UGA.

RAGIN ROBSTER: I share your impressions of kick coverage and stats validate it as well. Georgia’s 11th in the SEC and I don’t know what nationall in kickoff coverage at 40.3 yards net per game (that’s from the spot the ball is kicked off, so avg. field position is almost at the 31-yard line). Meanwhile, in Bama, LSU and Florida dogs will meet three of the nation’s best returners in the next month. Got to get it shored up… .
I, too, think this could be a big game for Mo Mass, TK and Kris Durham. A.J. will draw a lot of attention from the second, as he should, and that should create some opps for others. Stafford is experienced enough now to know that and get Dogs into the right play… . I think Geogia may throw the ball a good bit. that will almost completely eliminate the threat of 380-pound nose guard Terrence Cody… .
On your last point, I actually think Georgia is perfectly suited for blunting Coffee and Bama’s running game. They’ll have to find another way to move the ball than run between the tackles, IMHO.

Read this. Better think about expansion because evry person and every team has a breaking point. UGA will not ALWAYS be at the top of the heap. When a coach leaves or the team doesn’t live up to expectations (which will happen) then you are left with a stadium that you can’t fill. Just look at Nebraska,PennState (thay have got most of theirs back) Tennessee etc. All these teams ALWAYS sell out.But….it is harder to do with the cost of tickets and the cost of a donation. AT that point people want 100% results, and that is very hard to achieve. Just think back a very short time ago, UGA wasn’t packing them in while winning 7-9 or 10 games. It’s easy to think it will always be a big boom. but to me a stadium that isn’t to the capacity is really a sad site. I think it is best to have the 90k and fill it, making the tickets a harder find.Plus is there a real difference in 5 or 10 more thousand? Do you really notice it?

While Alabamama is recruiting 2nd and 3rd tier players from GA, Georgia is recruiting lst tier players from Alabama. Alabama could have at least 1 first tier player that GA would get. They aren’t a big recruiting state. That’s why they have to invade GA schools to get enough players to have a team.

I grew up in Athens and have seen the growth of the university and it’s facilites since the early 90’s. For get about Stegeman, Sanford Stadium and and indoor practice facility is most important. As long as Damon Evans stands firm on NOT closing the West end I’m in favor of it. The brige is as much a part of the stadium as the hedges. Pop another upper deck level on the South side of the thing above or around the sky boxes and wrap it around the top to meet the north side upper deck and call it a day. Oh and don’t forget to name the press box…The Larry Munson Press Box and it’ll be all good.
Stegeman is old as dirt but where you gonna play if you blow it up? Gwinnett Arena? The gym is nice, fixed the restrooms and call it a day. You don’t need any more seats becasue how many times is the place full anyway.
Foley Field, yes blow it up, I know little league teams with a better stadium and with all the NCAA Regionals they host the dump must be replaced.

UGA has the money, spend it and do it all. Expand the stadium, it’ll pay for itself in the long run. Stegeman needs to be blown up so we can start over again and get the BB program going. Come up with something innovative on the indoor football facility. Football is the golden goose that pays the bills so take care of the program.

How about tear down the West endzone and redo it completely! Move the seats as close to the field as possible, and make the seats straight up and down. Then make it rise, which would require moving the scoreboard, farther than the previous deck. Reserve this for the STUDENTS! More students first, alumni later. This would mean that a new handycapped section would need to be put in the east zone. This plan would create more seats and make our stadium louder and hold in noise better! Also, the view is kept.

The expansion sounds like it would ruin the looks of the stadium. I do not want an erector set like Nyland, leave Sanford alone! Renovate Stegeman and build a B-Ball program to make UGA proud. Also build the indoor practice field. Several practices have had to be cancelled or postponed due to lightning over the past two summers. This frustrates coaches trying to prepare a young team poised for a possible title run. We had one senior and one jr O linemen to start the season, the freshmen and sophs need all the reps in practice that they can get. IMO, the indoor facility should come first because football and Coach Richt pay the bills, then renovate Stegeman to make it more appealing to the fans. UGA needs basketball fans, let’s make the games a more pleasant experence. As to Chandler, nothing’s “wrong” with him, he is a 6’ 6”, 260 lb tight end, not a ballet dancer. Get the ball down and in front where it belongs and he will hang on to those passes. High passes over the middle expose a reciever’s ribs and mid section to lbs, not a good thing with tUSCe linebackers. Saban recruiting in Ga? What else is new, everybody recruits in Ga. OSU, AU, ND, UM, UF, UT, FSU, Clemson, tUSCe, the real SC, and God knows who else have been recruiting here for years. Richt is getting 90% of the players he targets, if he’s happy I’m happy. UGA “loses” a few kids every year to other schools, but they “steal” a couple also. Most of these guys were not offered by UGA. I am glad the kids have a chance to play and get an education somewhere.

I asked you this question after last week’s game and I did not get a reply, so I will ask again. After the C. Michigan game you said that UGA’s defense was “average at best.” After watching the last 2 games where the defense gives up 17 total points and only 4 yards rushing in last weeks win, do you want to amend your opinion about the Dawg D this season?

Man am I ENOYING watching impotent USC gets its overrated A++ kicked. BIG TIME! The pansies from the West Coast may rally to win (HOPE NOT) but they are far from a #1 team! USC might not be able to handle Mississipi State. Forget any top tier SEC teams! Love S++T announcers with their LAME excuses. Forget ‘em losers. GO DUCKS! Oh yeah, zebras obviously for Trojans. See that non-call on helmet removal late in half and bogus down call? Execute the crooked B++++++S!

Poser, the wit of humor is brevity. Leave it short and sweet. I guess you know what sweet means. I mean really dude, do you think my pals think you are me? And the rest don’t care. If you won’t face up to your butt whipping, I gave you the chance, well no one even me cares. Go ahead, use my name and others, you won’t face us, we know you are a wimp. Heck I was gonna sell tickets to our fight and make some good change, but you are the Momma’s boy I knew you were. Calling you out just proved it. my phone never rang when you were coming here. Guess you got beat up alot in high school. Welcome to the big leagues. If you cannot back it up, everyone knows you are just a school boy wimp that had his lunch money taken away because you were to busy wetting your britches to fight back. Dude, it must really suk to be you. Ever made it with a girl, inflatabels dont count. I have seen trash on this blog, been here awhile. You are the most pathetic piece I have ever seen. Just checke my vacation schedule. I have over two weeks left of vacation before the end of the year. Name the day and place, I will be there, or do you have to get your Mom to drive you there, if that is so, I will whip your Dad. your choice WIMP. Go tell your dad and mom that I am being mean to you. You can give it, can you take it, I think not.
Get a life of your own and stop stealing others, or go hang yourself in a closet, trust me, no one will miss you. Make an undertaker happy. B1tch.

Announcers were begging for field goal so beloved Trojans would only be down by 17 points at half. FORGET IT! How about 21-0? SWEET! Almost as good as a UGA victory. ALMOST! GO DUCKS! F++K USC! Cheap shot crybaby overrated C++Ksuckers!

Logically speaking, USC should NOT be ranked #1 even with a rally win. A completely undermanned team outslugged them for 30 full minutes! USC may (I said MAY) be tops in THEIR conference. Only bottom tier in SEC! F++K ‘em!

Sorry, Beavers! Damn USC has cut deficit to two touchdowns! Still not top ranked team! Do not get conservative OSU! Looked like S++T on critical fourth down! Could have castrated Trojans with stop. Too much time!

Condoms will win, but it’ll be close. Oklahoma and UGA get a chance to take some votes away from them with impressive wins.

Beavers remind me of those nights I would peek into the Glamour parlour of the brothel my moms used to work in before she took her own live for confessing to being a lesbian. Mamma, we really miss your ways and hours of hard work at that place pleasing so many hard working men in the Athens area. The called her Beaver Symms.

I think you might have shut that pathetic sub-human up for a while. Thanks. I called him out, too, but he just hides behind others’ names. Maybe he’ll figure out how juvenile and unfunny it really is.

Poser, just for your future comments about me. I am divorced and a single father raising two girls. There is no Mrs. Mark Symms. Nice try, just did not make it between the uprights. Let me know if you run out of ammo before you put the gun in your mouth and pull the trigger. I know Barney, he has got one bullet.
Really other than I want you to die a slow and painful death, before that, what did I do to you? Kinda fuzzy on that one. Now I hope you choke on your own vomit after your third beer bong. Good luck, may a tractor trailer squish you soon. BIIT#H. Let me know where you will be burired so my Dawg can Pi$$ on your and your mothers grave.

Oregon State is a miserable football team.
The PAC-10 is not a good conference, and neither is the Big 10. For that matter, the ACC is not a good conference and everyone knows the Big East is not.
We are in control of our own destiny.
Oregon State cannot punt.
Oregon State cannot pass.
Oregon State cannot kick field goals or extra points, even.
Oregon State has zero defense.
Bwwaaaa. Bwwaaaa. Pac-10.
Where is the PAC-10 poster ?
Hiding now imposter ?

How about Herbstreit voting us 5th?
That genius will find a way to get Ohio St back in the mix by the end of the season. He’s a homer that has it in for UGA, as evidenced by his immediate dismissal of UGA last year during ESPN’s BCS show. Even CMR commented on it.
