Now what can Georgia do for Munson?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There really is no way to put a value on what Larry Munson has done for the University of Georgia, or the other way around for that matter. Suffice it to say that theirs has been a truly symbiotic relationship and a very successful one at that. Neither biology nor psychology could explain what these two entities have done for each other.
And now, we all know, that relationship must come to an end.
Now Georgia must move on without Larry Munson, and that won’t be an easy thing. My good friend Scott Howard is a capable and talented fill-in, a real pro if there ever was one. If you’ve ever had the chance to listen in, I’m sure you’ll agree that he’s an excellent broadcaster, very sharp, articulate, quick-witted, like Munson quite excitable, loves his Dogs.
But it won’t be the same. Can’t be. Shouldn’t be.
Munson’s announcement Monday was sudden and unexpected. UGA knew it could come at any time because they’d left it up to Larry, but the cold reality of it was like a slap in the face. The question now is, what will Georgia do to honor Munson? AD Damon Evans said in separate sentences the Bulldogs would do “something appropriate” at the “appropriate time.” But what and when should that be?
Chip Folendore, a loyal Georgia fan I’ve gotten to know over the years, said he thought the Bulldogs should make Larry be an honorary captain for one of the games this season, maybe this next one against Alabama if he feels up to it. Take him out there on the field in a golf cart if need be, Folendore said, let him stand at midfield and tip a hat to the crowd. Could you imagine the ovation that’d get?
That got me to thinking. I’m probably wrong about this — and I know our alert readers here will let me know if I am — but I don’t think I’ve ever seen Larry on the field at Sanford Stadium before a game. Even last year, when Damon presented Munson with an honorary Georgia letter and a letterman’s jacket, it was done at his ever-present spot in the radio booth. Might be nice to see him front and center for a change, don’t you think.
But the inside word I was getting Monday was that Munson doesn’t want Georgia to do anything. Don’t make a fuss, he’s telling them. Don’t go to any trouble for me. And I can’t honestly say I know whether Larry would be up for it with all he’s gone through health-wise.
So what do you think Georgia should do? Is there a single gesture that could appropriately capture what Munson has meant to UGA and its people? Or should they just let him walk away in quiet dignity? Tough call.
A couple o’ links:
Not too impressed
Alabama’s Javier Arenas didn’t seem too impressed with Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno when asked about the Bulldogs’ tailback at the Tide’s weekly press conference Monday… .
Saban ‘blacks out’ news conference
Alabama coach Nick Saban swears it was unintentional but the local media called him out for wearing a black shirt to “black out” his weekly news conference in Tuscaloosa Monday. Saban was then asked what he thought of Georgia deciding to black out their game.

Since the Michael Adams, President of the U. of Georgia, is holding out to change the name of “The Stadium” to Sanford-Adams Stadium, maybe they can erect a statute of Larry Munson “a mile” away next to Vince Dooley’s? Chip, it doesn’t matter what WE think, it only matters what Dr. Adams thinks. Larry Munson is a Georgia Icon…and should have a prominent place of remembrance on campus. It’s a good question Chip…hope we get it “right” this time.

What a shock. Another Bama player flapping his gums the week before the game. That really seemed to work well for them last year.

Chip, I think you have misconstrued Mr. Arenas’ comments. He did not diss Knowshon. He said he was a great player. He was obviously agitated by the absolutely mindlessly retarded questions your media collegues were asking him. I really don’t see how you can see he isn’t impressed with Knowshon Moreno after he called him a great player. That is not fair to Arenas or anyone else. It is simply not accurate.

Sad, but true. The Munson Era is officially over. But there is a rhythm to these things, and Larry has the good sense to realize that his time is up, and a new era begins.
The letterman’s jacket probably meant more to Larry than anything anyone could say now. There will be plenty written in the papers, and I am sure that every officer of the athletic department and university will be sending written commendations for his service. Given Larry’s apparently fragile health, that may the best anyone can do for now.

Second, and facetiously, rename the goal line “The Door,” as in “They’re knocking at the door.”

I also think a nice section in the Butts building dedicated to Larry.

Perhaps they can name the Journalism building after him. The most appropriate thing would be to name the press box “Larry Munson Press Box”. I’m not talking about a $6 gold stamped plate that measures 8” X 10” on one of the doors to the press box. It would be appropriate to display his name in large letters under/above the existing press box. I am just not sure that the University has the forthought to get it done before it is too late. It would be nice to have it done while Larry is still with us, not post-humously. I am not convinved that Larry has the ability to leave his home at this time. I have a “not good” feeling regarding his health.

First off, I think Munson will be well honored at the appropriate time. As someone else wrote this morning, there is too much going on this weekend to make it then.
Second:
“Since the Michael Adams, President of the U. of Georgia, is holding out to change the name of “The Stadium” to Sanford-Adams Stadium, maybe they can erect a statute of Larry Munson “a mile” away next to Vince Dooley’s? Chip, it doesn’t matter what WE think, it only matters what Dr. Adams thinks. Larry Munson is a Georgia Icon…and should have a prominent place of remembrance on campus. Get over yourself and move on. Dooley is being honored appropriately with the statue/garden as Vince was more to UGA than just football coach. Changing the name of the stadium is a ridiculous idea. And grumpy farts who keep whining about this need to get over themselves.

There’s not much I can add to your comments Chip except to say, “Thanks Larry for all the great years of listening to The Dawgs play ball from your voice.” I always turned off the TV sound and turned you up on the radio.
Larry wouldn’g want a statue of himself anywhere - he’s not into that. But perhaps, when appropriate a bronze microphone on a piece of Georgia granite somewhere in the stadium with an inscription. I think he’d go for that.
NOW DAWGS - WIN THIS ONE FOR THE MUNSON !!

What about “retiring” the number 43 Munson jersey? Or maybe the most appropriate statue would be a broken metal chair behind an empty press box counter with a microphone.
Or instead of the Redcoats playing halftime at the Vandy homecoming game, they play Munson clips for ten minutes. That would be awesome.
Honestly, I think the blackout may be the best send off possible…appropriate even.
Chip, who do you think has bigger shoes to fill UGA VII or Scott Howard? Just kidding, we know it’s Howard. We’ll miss ya Larry!

Larry Munson was and is the only voice of Georgia football that I can remember as a child. I’m 54 now and I remember that back in the 60’s and early 70’s, UGA was televised maybe once each year. If you didn’t go to the game, radio was your only option. I came to love UGA and football through Larry’s voice. I’m sure whether replaced by Howard or anyone else, it will never be the same. We knew this day was coming and it’s hard to believe that day is today. We love you Larry!
As to an honor for him, I would love to see him at mid-field. The stadium would go nuts. Honor him we must, but I would have to think about the best way. Can’t believe it’s over.

This is a quote from Alabama safety Reshad Johnson : “It’s against a great team,” Johnson said. “For us to go out and be able to dominate these guys the way we’ve dominated some of our other opponents, yeah, it would definitely send a message that Alabama is for real.”
If THATS not a call-out then I dont know what is!! Lets go out saturday night and DEFINE Dominate..oh yeah.. and to show that we didn’t forget that beer bath we got after we piled on in the endzone after we won in overtime!

This weekend is Munson’s 86th birthday
Why not set a live feed up for Sanford Stadium to sing to Larry either before the game or at halftime? If Larry is not up for us seeing him, they could do a live feed where he sees us only, and put a picture of Larry on the big screen, announcing the retirement and birthday of Larry. The news that Larry is not calling a game is sad, but the thought that we can sing Happy Birthday (maybe followed by the fight song) to the greatest commentator would make the place electric.

I’m a Tech grad and bleed entomological protoplasm, but as a kid, my Dad and I would go fishing with 2 radios - one on his end and one on mine - mine Ciraldo, his Munson. So what can I say, I grew up with him and even not so grudgingly wish the Aggies -er- Dawgs success.
The classic line was “Look at the Sugar falling out of the sky!” so the best tribute might be to sprinkle the field with Dixie Crystals. Caution, this might attract angry yellow jackets.

I know Larry does not want to make a big deal of this or go through any trouble BUT he IS as much a part of UGA as ANY person I know! What I would propose is to OBVIOUSLY rename the press box at the very least;play his top play calls of all time during various timeouts of the game ( WILL KEEP THE UGA FANS JACKED ) and present him with a BLACK JERSEY for the coin toss and let him put it on in front of EVERYONE!

Mr. Towers, I think an appropriate tribute to the the second greatest icon of the University of Georgia (the first being UGA I-VII of course) and the sports broadcasting world would be to honor him by naming the broadcast booth were so many memorable calls were made”The Munson Broadcast Booth”. Like naming a stadium after legendary coaches this would be a lasting tribute and seeing it engraved into Sanford Stadium walls would be the lasting honor UGA should give.

Chip Towers….Nice try in your comments about Arenas. If using the words great player and superstar are saying he is not impressed, well, you apparently read more into it than I did. So, is it because he decided he didnt need to go out and search down Knowshon’s highlights that he was in some way disrespectful? If so, I will put in a call to coach Saban and ask him to make sure everyone respects Knowshon properly and goes to You Tube to see him jump over people!! Lord knows you cannot see that from football players around the country EVERY weekend on ESPN. I just when Moreno does it, it is just special! We are just lucky to be allowed on the same field as him this weekend.

Mike….Dominating your opponent has been a theme saban has preached since he arrived at UA. This is nothing new so try not to read into for more than it is worth. But, if that fires you up enough go for it. It seems the team and fan need much more to be fired up than just playing a top 10 team. Black jerseys. Black helmet and pants. Munson clips. Munson as the honorary captain. Whatever it takes!

It would be nice if the players wore a symbol on their uniforms to honor Larry Munson. MIght be a LM or a micro phone on their jersey or helmet. Rememeber, it was Mr. Munson who was doing the games back when Damon Evans wore the red and black. This would be a nice gestur and considering Mr. Munsons health would honor him without making him leave his home. Now is our time to remember the man who has done so much not only in servitude of the University of Georgia but college football in general. Endow numerous scholarships at the Grady school in broadcasting, a chair where we can bring in other sportscasting giants to teach students, rename the bridge after him over Sanford Drive, a DVD of all his greatest radio hits synchronized to film on one release, and pass the hat at one game (and you would get several million to start with), induction in every sports and broadcasting hall of fame he has not already been inducted in, naming the press box is an obvious beginning place, give him a golden mike, or a red and black and silver one for that matter

Sounds like Bama is pretty jacked up and eager for this game. They are even talking domination. Look for Bobo to pull a few things out of the bag early to take advantage of what will surely be an overly agressive young defense. That will calm them down in a hurry. Bama is in for a long night if it is expecting domination. The better be expecting an all out war.

I like the idea of naming the press box in Munson’s honor ( a REAL no-brainer, as has been said several times), and instead of Milledge Avenue, how about renaming the lower end of Baxter Street in Athens “Larry Munson Boulevard”m since it dead-ends at the stadium /tate Center parking lot?
The idea posted by David of putting the LM on helmets is also a great idea.
I’d love to see Larry honored at pregame, but as has been said, he doesn’t want a big deal made. That plus his health issues make that idea doubtful at best.

I thought the press box was already named after Munson…well name it anyway!!! Munson doesn’t want a lot of fanfare and I respect that but you gotta do something. I just hate that he was 4 games shy of 500 and had called an SEC games for 54 straight years and the Alabama game would have made it 55 straight. I’ll miss Munson but he went when he was ready to go and there is nothing more I could ask for. The Athletic Department just needs to make sure going forward that Munson’s voice is heard before, during or after EVERY game played in that stadium until time indefinite. You something that would fire up the fans and players.

I agree with him being the Honorary Captain at the next home game- black jersey too. There is alot of ways to pay tribute to one of the GREATEST DAWGS. The press box would be a great way. How bout a whole section of the stadium named after him (Student section possibly or maybe the tunnel where the players come out). HUNKER DOWN Larry we’ll miss ya.

Hey Chip,
I about died laughing when I read your BS article Sunday defending the Dawgs and their lack of playing bcs conference opponents outside of the immediate southeast in the last 50 years. Since you obviously just make stuff up as you go along I will actually take the time to correct you on a number of your silly and highly inaccurate statements.
You state that UGA hasn’t played many big time regular season games outside of the deep south in the last 50 years but then neither has anyone else in the SEC either except for Tenn. Bullsheet!
Bama played home and homes with UCLA and Oklahoma in the early 2000s. In the 70s and 80s and 90s we played home and homes with USC, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State,Texas A&M, Washington, a single game with Ohio St, NC State and BYU in the 90s, just to name a few. Your statement that it wasn’t practical or economical for SEC teams to play these big time games is utter nonsense. This obviously was all well before the 12th game which was recently added. Uga just didn’t play big time noncon home and homes cause they were always chicken Sh__t!
Let me school you further and let you know that in the 2000s before the 12th game you had almost all SEC teams except for UGA playing big time home and home noncon games. Even Ole Miss with ND in the 70s, Texas Tech in the 2000s and Miss St. with Oregon and then West Virginia in the 2000s stepped up to the plate. Auburn played USC in the early 2000s, Texas in the late 80s or 90s, Maryland and several other opponents in the 80s, etc. Arkansas played USC and Texas in the early 2000s, LSU played Texas A& M, Ariz. St and Va Tech and others, even Vandy stepped up to the plate and played Michigan a couple years ago. Florida gets FSU every year and Miami again so they are exscused. And Tennessee like Alabama, has played numerous home and homes all over the country over the last 30 years.
That’s what always separated Bama and Tennessee from the rest of the pack and made them the top 2 winningest programs in the SEC as well as the bigger, more elite national names while UGA hid in its small, comfy shell in the southeast.
You then try to justify UGAs small time status of being to chicken sh_t to play outside of the southeast by mentioning the bowl games west of the mississippi and the games against LSU and Arky.
R U just stupid? Arky and LSU are conference games and have to be played and on the bowl games its not like you get to chose where to play. You have to go where the bowl game is. How else could you drag UGA’s chicken scratch program outside of the deep south or west of the Mississippi. You think they would go voluntarily?
Instead of being a Georgia homer why don’t you do your freaking job and do a little research rather than trying to prop up UGAs pathetic football tradition or lack thereof when it come to playing big time opponents home and home.
You also failed to mention that UCLA did come to athens in 1985 to play the dawgs. Of course UGA naturally chickened out of returning the trip to Pasadena the next year.
Truly indicative of a small time, local program. There is a reason why ESPN gameday only comes to UGA once every 10 years. And if you think they’re coming this week to see UGA you’re dead wrong. They’re coming to UGA because UGA is playing the REAL big name in the SEC, BAMA!
I’ll give Richt a little credit though. At least he’s trying to change that pathetic mentality of being small timers.

Is there a Chicago Cubs fan anywhere who doesn’t fondly think of Haray Caray during the Wrigley field 7th inning stretch?
At Yankee Stadium, doesn’t the Irish Tenor’s singing of “God bless America” help all remember the lives lost and the commitment to move forward stemming from 9/11?
Yes, Larry Munson deserves the Press box naming, he deserves LM on Bulldog helmets, he deserves to be welcomed at midfield on national TV greeted by Vince Dooley and Herschel Walker and a very select few others. Yes, he deserves meaningful permanent tribute recognition that will live forever around the campus and where the game is played. But he deserves MORE because he’s given so much more - and we NEED so much more.
Munson audio/video highlights should be at the start of every 4th quarter of every UGA home game hence forth!
Play them during pregame for the players to see, Play them during pregame to let the opposition feel the sacred bond between Bulldog faithful and team. AND YES, REPEAT THEM at the start of every 4th Quarter to close out strong.
The Techies have their “When you say Budweiser” theme and its fun and a rallying cry.
But Larry Munson TRULY IS the UGA 12th man. Knowing his voice will be forever remembered at every home game as both pre game and 4th quarter motivation for fans and players and coaches alike, should do Mr. Munson a world of good. AND, it will do UGA fans, players and coaches a world of good for all games - and all seasons - that lay ahead.
G-d bless the one and only Larry Munson.

All are very, very good ideas.
How about a couple more:
A Larry Munson Schalorship to the “Munson” Department of Sports Information at the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Rename East Campus Street to “Larry Munson” Boulevard - in recognition of his “workman” like approach to broadcasting Georgia games for 42 years. East Campus is not named for anyone else, as are so many of the other streets on campus, and serves as the “working” access to the Sanford Stadium.
God Bless Munson … God Bless the Bulldog Nation!

Watch this around the 1:04 mark, turn it up and listen to the “Class” and notice Nick Saban a couple feet away.

Granted you have a good team this year but you are about to step up to big boy football on Saturday night and you know as well as I that you guys are not ready to compete with the big boys of the SEC. When Saban leaves after this year to take another job, you will be back at the bottom of the SEC, where you belong. GO KISS YOUR SISTER, YOU INBRED REDNECK. THE A* WHIPING IS COMING IN FOUR DAYS. Name the tunnel after Munson that the players ENTER the stadium (next to the big UGA statue), but AFTER they name it Vince Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium. Maybe this would speed up the correct thing to do.

I like several of the ideas - microphone sticker on the helmet, honorary captain, and of course Dooley-Munson Field even though it won’t happen since Adams hates all things in football history associated with the Dooley era. Whatever we do, it’s been a great ride and we need to do this tribute right!
Thank You Larry!
Also, I, too have been wondering why Richard Samuel did not play. My personal theory is that he is only going to rotate two backs per game to keep Knowshon in a rythym. When all three rotated, he didn’t run as well. Also, did Erickson apologize to Richt for the uncalled chop block that injured Lomax? (I think it was him)

I think that a ceremony with Munson brought out on a cart if needed….just as was suggested. I think thats the best idea, but what do i know?
I was born in 1975, and all i have ever known was when Munson gave us the Herschel call in K-Ville and beyond. Munson IS UGA on the radio to me. I began season tixs in 1999, and I would like to be able to applaud him in the stadium where he gave us such great moments.
Lets thank him in person.

Stephen….I find it funny that a fan of a team whose coached order (and whose fans openly support) his team to get an UNSPORTSMANLIKE penalty call because he was “desperate” to motivate his team, can call out ANY ONE else on the basis of class!!! Nice try.
But, maybe our strength coach, during warm ups, should do is read them bible passages like they probably do at UGA. Give it a rest. You guys can think into Johnsons comments all you want. It is philosphy in sports. I have never played a sport where I wanted to have one great play and then let my oppenent have one next!!!

I have had the privilege of knowing Larry Munson since the mid 70’s. So many of his calls are etched in my memory, but one began the legacy for me. I recall his words when Richard Appleby threw the surprise tight end around pass to Gene Washington against Fla to beat the highly ranked, highly favored Gators in the old Gator Bowl ‘Appleby to Washington, Appleby just stopped and threw the ball, Washington was thinking of Montreal and ran out of his shoes, the stadium is rocking, the girders are bending now’ .There are so many, many more. We all knew this day would come, but who among us knew Larry Munson would do play by play for 42 years? 42 years, is simply AMAZING, nearly 1/2 century of play by play of Georgia football.
What is appropriate to honor Larry? Certainly something which will last for years to come. I have two suggestions: 1) at whatever game is chosen to honor Larry, the Ath Dept should announce in advance that there will be a collection to endow a Larry Munson Scholarship for a Broadcast Major in the Grady School of Mass Communications. Georgia fans can endow the scholarship when they enter the Stadium by placing money in collection containers located at the entrances to Sanford Stadium. By doing so in this fashion every fan entering the game has an opportunity to contribute. The contribution will be a tribute to Larry’s enormous popularity among the Georgia fans. If each fan contributes $3 that will raise over $250,000, enough to properly endow the scholarship. Plus, Larry would understand just how much he means to the average fan. 2) since the Press Box carries the name of Dan Magill, I would suggest the bridge to the west end of the stadium be named the Larry Munson Bridge.

The minimum required to endow an undergraduate scholarship at UGA is $25K; the minimum for a graduate scholarship is $50K (this amount can be paid over five years). Endowed chairs typically run a million dollars. I’d like to think that “Munson” scholarship funds could be raised in one game.
In my opinion, UGA fans should also pay tribute to Munson by getting in their seats early and being loud during the game!

Bobby…you seem like a very bitter person. Maybe if you put on your black now, you will feel better. Such hostility for a team that is not even a rival. Stephen…Fair enough but that doesnt change the fact that he told his team he wants a celebration penalty, does it? I have always thought pretty highly of Richt and I still do. I think he was exactly what he said he was….desperate. But after seeing that, I just feel no one else who supports UGA and what they did has any room to talk. Saban, this week, has been NOTHING but respectful to UGA. If you want to judge him on what he did with Miami, that fine and he has commented on MANY occasions how he didnt handle the situation correctly.
As for teh SC coach, if you want to see it as fuel, fine. That guy is crazy and yells like that at every practice and I dont fault him for motivating our team. If you think the UGA players care for a second about that, you are insane. They care that they are playing a top 10 team and will be prepared for it if they wear red, black or pink! So will BAMA and they will play hard no matter what color UGA is wearing. This is football….not a fashion show!

I think the honorary captain is a really good idea…especially if it could be pulled off this weekend. If not, then at the TN game. In addition while he is out on the field, we present him with an Honorary Doctorate in Journalism and have Loren and the rest of the broadcast crew on the field with him!
Play some of his clips at that time….there would be an ovation like you’ve never heard before at Sanford!

My Tribute to Larry Munson a Great American and a Greater Dawg!
My very first baptism into Dawg football was in the late sixties, early seventies as a young lad in our small town barber shop…. The ole men and me would seat and listen in awe as Larry would describe each play as intense as the first……. I can still hear him say …….. what cha got Loren…… and…… Now get the picture the Dawgs in red and lined up in a staggered formation facing east and now the sun has just slide in behind a cloud and the temperature just dropped a bone chillin 30 degrees, thousands are still pouring in the stadium hurrying rapidly to get to their seats before the dawgs tee it up……. With tears in my eyes and a standing ovation ……. Larry thanks and May God bless!

Stephen…I agree with him maybe using better judgement but for the most past, practices are closed at UA and I am sure he didnt know nor was he looking for a camera. Maybe he could have chosen better words but I can assure it it was not meant to fuel UGA but rather BAMA so we had an intense practice. From what I heard, things are intense as they really want this game. We will see Sat and I cant wait!
As for Munson, I am not a huge fan but then again, I dont listed to UGA broadcasts. I think a great tribute would be to endow a scholarship in his name. It is a great way to honor him while helping someone else get through school. If I am correct, he has been helping kids get through school for years through scholarship and fundraisers! It would be the perfect tribute!
