UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Bulldogs back in black for Bama

So the Bulldogs are going to “blackout” the Alabama game. SEC contest, top 10 opponent, night game, national television, ESPN GameDay in the house. I guess that makes sense.

I’ve kind of gone back and forth on the whole blackout phenomena. Without question last year’s stunt was one of the cooler things I’ve seen Georgia do over the years. Thinking back, it’s still pretty amazing how they pulled that off, coming out to warm up in red jerseys and then coming back out in black ones for the game. Then Knowshon runs roughshod over Auburn and suddenly having a black No. 24 Georgia jersey is all the rage in the Bulldog Nation.

All of which is one reason why I thought they might let it be for a while. You know how hard it is to capture such magic more than once. Of course, the Dogs “blacked out” the Sugar Bowl, too, so they’re 2-0 in black. But I thought they might store the black jerseys for a while and whip them out again against an unsuspecting opponent — and fanbase — in a few years.

But clearly the Dogs’ fans love it. There had been talk since last season about if and when Georgia might orchestrate a blackout again this season. Had I been betting on it, I would’ve laid my money on the Tennessee game. Why? Just because it’s an Eastern Division opponent and they humiliated the Dogs pretty good in Knoxville last year. You have to remember, the Vols put a ton of emphasis on that game against Georgia last year. They sent out letters asking ticket holders to wear orange and get there early and be extra loud, etc. I figured the Dogs might go for some payback.

Then again, with the circumstances as they are and the night game and the Georgia seniors asking for it, I can see coach Mark Richt’s logic. He basically said it was what the players wanted so he just went with it. Here’s some of what he said when he was explaining it on his Sunday evening teleconference call with reporters:

“I don’t think you do it too much, but I think our fans really enjoyed it. Our players certainly enjoyed it and the seniors, they want to have a little ownership of that type of thing. I always meet with them at my home during preseason camp and [the blackout] always seems to be a topic of conversation. That’s basically the main thing they wanted to talk about. ‘When are we gonna do it? When are we gonna do it?’ So we talked about the possibilities that it could be. At that time, I was just saying that I didn’t want to do it in September because of the weather. There’s the possibility of a hot day and a 3:30 kickoff or even earlier, so I said, ‘let’s not really think about that one.’ But then as everything transpired the way it did, we got a night game, they found out there’s a very good chance the GameDay crew was coming, they just thought it was the time to do it. And I’m fine with it. Whatever those guys want on that deal is fine with me.”

So there you go. What do you think? Glad to see them breaking out the black jerseys again? Is this the right time? Would you rather see them stick to traditional Georgia home red? Do you think that the black jerseys should become a yearly tradition? And what if the Bulldogs ever do make it to the ultimate game — a national championship contest? Do you wear them then or go with the traditional Georgia red?

Yes, a yearly tradition. Maybe even twice a year if the timing is right, competition right and the stakes are big. Right now anything that will keep the training moving or improveing in the right direction. This is a BIG game and then our Dogs get a well deserved week our so we need to get this one won and Yes any extra motivation that helps , lets do it!!!

I wonder if this game against Alabama has any resemblance to the UGA-UA game in Tuscaloosa back in 2002. Georgia had a pretty young coach and a program that had not been able to break through big milestones since the 80’s. The win spurred the dogs into being an elite program that had the confidence to win any place any time.

Alabama reminds me of those Dawgs. Will this be there break-out game where they begin to believe they can win anywhere, anytime, under any circumstances?

Whatever helps them gain a little psychological boost is great. I believe they’d win wearing red, black ,green or blue but if it gets their motors running a little stronger, go for it. The black jerseys do look really good but I’m more of a traditionalist and the red is special to me. Anyway, I hope they don’t wear this blackout thing out because I really didn’t expect them to do this until Jax. Once a year is enough for me, personally.

I like the decision to go for the blackout. I think we’re going to need all the help we can get against Alabama as I believe they’re a legit team (as are we). The Gameday crew will be there, huge national spotlight after the Arizona State win, etc.

On a different note, when is Southerland coming back? We need him bad on those goal line runs. Chapas isn’t bad, but Southerland is in a different league as far as punching in those TD’s on the goal line. If Moreno and King are doing as well as they are without him there, I can’t wait to see their numbers when we get him back.

Oh boy! I am soooo excited that I get wear my black outfit again. It makes me feel so special to be part of a group that brings so much joy to my otherwise pathetic life. And ESPN will be there as well, oh boy! The very institution that we have been complaining about all this year and last year and now I’m creaming myself over them coming to campus. We’re dropping in the polls because of the deskperts! They dont show Knowshon leaping over a player enough! They love Michigan and Ohio State! Sound familiar? If you dawg fans had any short and curlys on your applesack, you would NOT show up for Gameday!

Doesn’t it kind of defeat the purpose if you annonce it a week before you do it? I mean, if you played for UA and you heard about this 6 days before the game wouldn’t it fire you up to come in here and spoil this blackout? I still have confidence in a UGA win but I think the shock effect that it had on AU was undeniable. I know that because they need the fans to wear black that it’s pretty much impossible to keep it a secret but they should have waited until later in the week. All that being said, GATA DAWGS!

Chip, I guess I’m feeling a bit like you on this. I guess it makes sense. And if the Senior players really want it, how could I ever question that? But it’s like you said with recapturing magic, I’m a little reserved about doing this thing too much. And as far as playing in a National Championship Game, if we don’t have to play in White, I want to be wearing RED! With all that said, I’ll be in Black on Saturday, bring on the Tide! Go Dawgs!!!

I could just cut and paste from 2 weeks ago, but I’ll restate. The TN will have its own built in excitement. Revenge is correct, what more would you need there. Plus its likely to be a day game.

Why would you not make it a yearly event? Black is a school color. Sure its going to lose its uniqueness, but hey, that shouldn’t stop it. There had to be a first for every tradition. I dont think anyone at the Auburn game last year will ever stop talking about that. I look forward to wearing the black for years to come, if for no other reason, to recall that first time, with my buddies that were there with me.

Bowl game blackouts, I’m not sold on that. Seems like you kind of lock yourself into doing it everytime if that gets started.

Without a doubt, I would prefer to see the traditional Red Georgia Jerseys in a NCG.

CHIP I like it that we black out this week against Bama.

This is not a slight to Alabama at all. It is a COMPLIMENT TO ALABAMA for coming so far so soon under Saban and this being a big big big game

Its a Big game, Gameday is in town, and its a PLAYERS REQUEST.

Like Nick Saban or not, he’s a good coach.

It’s also at NIGHT. Thats why CMR agreed.

I cant wait. Go dawgs.

I think the Blackout is a good thing and should be done once a per regular season. If they are playing for a National Championship I want to see the Red because that’s Georgia. When wearing the black you just have to pick your spots. Personally I wanted to see them bust up Flordia in black just to keep the mo going from last season but the Bama game is fine. Bama isn’t on the schedule again until another 4 yrs and there a conference opponent. Of course you will never be able to generate the emotion from the first time but wearing them once per season against a major opponent in a big game is good and hey college is always about tradition and GA is breaking in a new tradition, keep it moving becasue the colors are Red and Black but when you see the Dawgs in black you really better BEWARE, just good marketing and intimidation!!!!!!

It doesn’t matter what color you wear as long as you win. The dawgs could wear that sick Ga. Tech yellow and still win. I think Alabama has a fine program in progress, however they aren’t quite ready to play with the big Dawgs yet. I believe UGA is coming to what we predicted in the summer. Just play them one at a time. Has there ever been a team that has had to play as many top 25 teams or previously ranked during the season (ASU, Al, AU, TN, VANDY, LSU, FL, GA TECH and poss. UK) than UGA? This is brutal.

voice of reason…

A blackout (or “whatever”-out) is pointless if the fans aren’t in on it. They have to be announced in advance to the fans can join in.

The surprise last year was the black jerseys for the team. Obviously, that cannot be replicated.

Or can it? ;)

I like the idea of using the black uniforms in 1 big home game a year. It’s a lot of fun and so far it has been successful.

As far as the MNC game goes, IF we were to make it to that game I think we should wear our main jersey. No need for any more gimics at that point. Just go out and be UGA.

By I-DOG

September 22, 2008 10:10 AM | Link to this

It is great to be 4-0 and highly ranked. Bama will be a tough test.

I was concerned about our goal line offense againt W. Michigan and that same problem came up against ASU. Getting Southerland back will certainly help. Until then… maybe we should mix in some throws from inside the 3 yard line if we aren’t knocking it in. Another thought is… Boling is not the ideal goal line offense guard. Why not substitute one of the bigger stronger bodies when it is 2nd and goal from the 2?

I think the season will show that ASU has a good offense. Our D played very well. Penalties kept their few successful drives alive and we can’t keep having double digit infractions and beat the best 3-4 teams on our schedule.

Gen Neyland: Take heart, Fulmer’s squads have improved tremendously after some slow starts. I do agree with you that this team doesn’t seem to have the same potential as his last few, particularly at QB at this point, never count Phil’s squad out. They will get better and win some games.

I still think we will lose one game this regular season (of course I hope we win them all). It seems like the best games to lose at this points would be AL or LSU.

We can’t lose an SEC East game as that might put us out of contention to win the SEC and that of course would pretty much mean no shot at the MNC. However, if we lose early to either Bama or LSU, we could still win the East, still probably be a top 10 team and rising… and if we keep winning and somehow win the SEC… we might just get a shot.

Obviously winning every game would be the ultimate, but those seem to be the only two games, where losing one, would still keep our goals alive.

Chip, I think you kind of missed the point. You cant suprise the fans with it now, and you cant suprise them again in the future. Once you ask the fans to wear black, its a give away. Think a bit harder next time. And, most teams in football…L’Ville, Rutgers, FSU, Oregon, Va Tech…the list goes on, wear alternate uniforms once or twice a year. I think Georgia can get away with the same. I havnt found one fan who thinks wearing black is dumb, i mean it is part of our color scheme…look at the basketball team.

I don’t think UGAy will be able to run the ball against the Tide. Bama’s D-fense is off the hook. As long as JPW doesn’t turn it over, it is curtains for the Dawgs. I guess wearing black to a funeral is appropriate.

Chip I noticed that Richard Samuel didn’t even play against ASU. Any reason behind this? I thought they would rotate among the 3 backs even more due to the heat. I was always surprised that he was number 2 over King anyways. He actually never really impressed me. Nice runner, but not great. Seems to go down to easily. I personaly think it was a motivational ploy to get King to really step it up and earn his spot. Any thoughts?

I said a week ago Bama would be the perfect blackout game due to it being a night game atmosphere (and another team from the Alabama). LSU, UT, & UF I assume will be CBS 3:30 games, and we have a week off to get pumped up for UT, not to mention, UF, LSU, and Auburn are away games. I don’t see Vandy or GT a blackout game, and this is perfect timing after coming off of a big win out west and then having to face LSU next week. HUGE GAME!!! Definitely worth the blackout! I’m not a big fan of the unusual jersey color gimmick, but, heck, if players and fans are having fun, who am I to rain on the parade. IMHO, UGA’s black jerseys should be reserved for the truly big games, and given Bama’s recent progress in rehabilitating their program, this is probably an appropriate game for their “black-out.”

For the record, I hate the Gators’ blue-on-blue uniforms (is that a “blue-out?”). Florida’s best uniforms are the white jersey on blue pants, and blue jersey on white pants. Personally, I think orange works best as a highlight color, but I’m a football fan, not an interior decorator, Jim!

Michael, I don’t think Chip missed the point at all. You could surprise everyone if you waited till a special game a year or so down the road and then kept it under wraps and on Wed or Thurs told everyone to wear black. Sure it wouldn’t be AS surprising as the first time, and the fans wouldn’t be surprised when team ran out in black, but it would still be a rare change rather than this new slightly more common thing that it is turning in to. I don’t think anyone thinks it’s a ‘dumb’ idea. I think some may just would like it to be a little more rare. PLUS the question has to be asked, “what happens if we lose while wearing black?” Does THAT make a difference to you?

By Brent

September 22, 2008 10:29 AM | Link to this

The original blackout was amazing, but I’m afraid it’ll lose its effect if we do it too often. Once a year at the most is all we should do (I’d prefer once every few years). I don’t think we should have blacked out the Sugar Bowl but I can’t really complain due to the result.

So far we’re undefeated in blackouts but the more we do it the sooner we’ll lose in the black jerseys. Part of the appeal/intimidation of the blackout has to be the fact that we’re undefeated when we do it. When we finally lose a blackout game, we shouldn’t revisit the idea for at least another 5+ years.

As far as the NC game goes, if we ever make it there we absolutely should NOT have a blackout. Traditional red jerseys all the way!

Chip, The Back In Black event also helps keep The Dawgs focused on the game at hand. This is incredibly crucial because of our schedule this season.

I’m damn proud of The Dawgs and what they’ve accomplished. They have grown as a team every week - one can see it in their performance.

Bama will be the biggest test yet. I don’t buy into the “Bama hasn’t played anybody” stuff. Their schedule to date has been a bit easier than ours but not by much. They are playing great ball, have a heck of a gameday coach and a strong desire to win. The Dawgs are at home after two weeks on the road and will have loud fan support with a Blackout.

Dawgs win in an SEC smashmouth game by 7.

Bama is looking good, for sure, and should have a ton of confidence. If this adds a little “Ali juju” to get in their heads…even better.

Chip, any updates on how o-linemen graded out for the game? Vance looked lathargic, but everyone else, especially B. Jones, seemed to be getting after it pretty good. I hope they get ready for Saban 3-4 Defense and the big 360-pounder at note tackle!

Lastly, is it just me or does Chapas look like a little boy compared to Southerland’s size and strength?

Gotta admit I was a little disapointed when I read about this. Just hope it doesn’t take the focus off the task at hand. If it fires up the players then great - they deserve it. Just as long as its not looked at as a gimmick to win. We don’t need gimmicks. We could wear purple polkadots and win. Seriously, we have a great team. If the leaders on the team want it, then do it. I think Richt is hiding Samuel for the big games. They have shown us a little more each week offensively. I didn’t follow the stats that close but I was suprised that Stafford had that many yards. Putting it where it needs to be. We have our possession receiver now in Green and Moore. Our fly guys MoMass, T King and Durham. The O-line looked good on a lot of those running plays. Don’t worry about that goal line offense. We didn’t another TD at the end there anyway. Besides all we would have to do is give it to Knowshon and let him fly over a gap in the line. Good to see some of those timing pattern coem through.

Chip, what was the deal with the field Saturday night? Looked slippery.

YES! A buddy called me this morn when I was heading out the door to tell me about this. Yesterday over lunch a few of us were debating when the next blackout would be. I think this is perfect timing! Coming of a west coast trip were we took care of our business, with the travel we might be a little fatigued this week, while going against a tough opponent whose coach would love to make a statement saying: “we’re back in the NC hunt.” What better way to counter act that than going with a BLACKOUT against ole Slick Nick! Brilliant! I too thought the Tennessee game would be the blackout game this year with them looking pathetic as they have we don’t need to waste it on them. For me there the rival team I despise the most so yes I still want redemption with no letting off the gas but no need to go blackout on them. To me this should become a tradition sort of like ND’s green jerseys, Clemson in all orange or FL’s blue pants where do it for big or meaningful games. If we get to an NC game then it’s the biggest game of all which meats the criteria so let CMR & seniors decide what to ware I’d be fine with whatever they went with.

The question for this blackout is will CMR give in to the players & let them go with a total blackout? Black Helmets, Jerseys, & pants? That’s been the rumor of what the players want but I don’t see CMR letting them go that far because he’s said he wants people (recruits) to be able to recognize UGA when they see them on TV so I think we’ll see red helmets & sliver britches which is my preference BUT if it takes them to another level then I’ll be good with it.

Chip, please ask CMR about the possibility of a total blackout: Black Helmets, jerseys, & pants.

GO DAWGS! Let’s BLACKOUT & blowout Bama!

Perfect timing for the blackout… and I actually think our chances of winning just went up.

I know that may sound a little bit silly, but so much of football rides on emotion and mental make-up. Our players and fans will be absolutely stoked on Saturday night.

And yes, a good point can be made that if they can’t get stoked without black jerseys, then something is wrong. However, one thing that doesn’t get talked about enough is the psychology of the game…

When the players put on those black jerseys, they’ll be thinking about last year’s games against Auburn & Hawaii: UGA’s two best-played games a year ago… and the players will feel invincible. That is significant.

I’m not trying to over-emphasize the thing. It still comes down to blocking and tackling… but when you feel like you’re going to dominate, that’s a good thing.

I too was concerned they may be overplaying the “blackout” card but I think this is the perfect game to do it. Alabama is the first of many top ten teams we’ll have to beat on our schedule if we want to win the SEC and play for the NC.

Alabama has looked really tough so far, especially where we are weakest, on the line. This is our first “must win” game if we are going to make a statement. It’s a night game on national TV, and we’re playing a school who also wears read. I think this is the perfect way to generate extra buzz among the fans, players, and viewers.

The tricky part is following through on the field to win the game. Otherwise we lose the magic of the blackout for future games. Its a risk, but a very good risk and a good time to do it. Win this week, and we’re on our way. Lose, and pollsters, fans, and players alike may start doubting how special this season could be.

I think this could be the most exciting game we play this year. I’m looking forward to a great game by the “guys in black.” Go Dawgs!

But I guess the senoirs watched UT game and figured they could beat the vols in practice jerseys. we don’t have many seniors on this team and I think they want to leave their mark on the program. If the players think they have an edge by wearing black, then they should wear black. Should we break out the red pants aganinst UT? One more question, if you win the toss why would you give a team that scored 59 on you the ball?

I like the blackout concept. I thought they would do it against Tennesee, but the Alabama games is shaping up to be a big one and they need all the help they can get. And UGA is the type of team that when properly motivated can be a VERY tough team to beat. A win over Bama could be the catalyst for this young team and this season! As for College Gameday, let me be the first to say I could care less if they show up to Athens or not! They bury us all year, and then expect us to kiss their a* when they finally do decide to show up in Athens? The only reason they are coming to Athens is b/c of the National exposure that the win over Arizona State brought them on ABC. Personally I think ABC and CBS do a far superior job than anything ESPN does. The only reason to watch College Gameday is to know who to bet money on since their predictions( especially Lee Corso’s) are awful.

Totally agree with the NC scenario. Gotta wear the red jerseys and silver britches if we make it. And Chuck, I believe I said that I understand that the fans have to be involved by wearing black as well, but I meant that I would have waited until Thursday or Friday to get into Alabama’s head a little closer to game time. The 90,000+ rabid dawg fans at night in Athens will help too! GO DAWGS!

You can get a free NOBAMA bumper sticker by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Free Bumper Sticker, c/o Ted Jackson, 2306 Frankfort Ave., Louisville, KY 40206. Regardless of who wins the election, it will still say “NO Bama”. You can pack a large envelope with lots of self-addressed stamped envelopes and send one to all your friends and family while saving some postage. The free sticker probably won’t arrive before the Bama-UGA game but Auburn fans and anyone else on Bama’s schedule should be able to make it work. Also, you might make this Saturday if you use their Website and pay rush shipping.

Chip,

I say stay red in the NC game (if we make it), but let’s use whatever we have in the arsenal to get there. Blacking out the bama game is perfect, and I got a feeling we will need some extra ummppphhh’ so maybe it will work. Bama will be the best team we have faced, great benchmark for our team. I still think we will be able to run the ball on their ‘awesome’ D-line, WE HAVE TO GIVE KNOWSHON THE BALL IN SPACE!! stop running him up the center’s butt, toss sweep’s, off tackle, mis-direction weak side runs, why not??

Given the magnitude of this matchup, along with the fact ESPN is in town and it’s a night game, sure, don the black jerseys for Bama. After all, I don’t think UT, Vandy, or GT are gonna get any bigger than this one.

That being said, I really hope this is the only time UGA wears them this year - it’s becoming too much of a gimmick. I agree with a previous post that we should’ve stuck to the traditional red for the Sugar Bowl - remember, it was just Hawaii, for christ sake. If we do make it to the title game, I’d be disappointed to see us in anything but the red, unless of course, we’re the designated “road” team and wear our usual whites.

I kind of thought they may try to blackout the LSU game. My thinking was that LSU wears white at home and we could spring it on LSU and their fans, and get a big lift by taking the blackout to somenone else’s house.

Don’t like the gimmicks, especially when they’re announced ahead of time. It gives the opponent the opportunity to use it against you. I can see SaBear telling his team to get fired up make UGA look silly in their black jerseys on national TV. I also thinks it gives a team a false sense of invincibility. If you’re gonna do it, spring at the last minute. Remember red pants?

Dan, I’m sorry but CBS is terrible. Gary Danielson is nauseating and Vern’s not much better. They miss half the game because they talk too much about other things and come back from commercials too late. Frankly, RayCom does a better job than CBS and that ain’t saying much.

Folks- YoungDawg hit on a point. This should be a tired team this week, but only slightly moreso than the previous week because Richt got them out there Fri and back Sat nite-Sun AM. He was thinking ahead to Bama. If the seniors want it, that’s good enough. They may be thinking of the mental fatigue factor and the Blackout will juice them up. Now it’s up to the noise factor to help through this game and get to a break week undefeated. If the players didn’t think the black uni will work, why would they want it? I go with the players.

Before someone stole I-DOG’s ID, the statement was made that the Dawgs should lose one game and that would be Bama or LSU. Did you not see the barnburner with Aub? That was one great SEC game and I could see us on both sides of the ball. Mattered most who had the ball last with 2 mins, but we got a bonus out of that game. They both uncovered their pass games and trick plays to get players open to win the game. Probably neither one wanted to do that, but had to in order to go for the WC win. I’m sure our coaches saw plenty of what we will have to defend against concerning both teams.

I expect to see new plays by the Dawgs in this game. I’m waiting on the halfback pass and the end around since it was spoiled in the ASU game. I’ll bet that the offense pulls out the stops because we have an extra week to install new plays for Tenn. After Bama, the bigger concern will be Vandy.

Dawgs have their work cut out to gut Bama’s D and put a whuppin’ on ‘em. SIC’EM DAWGS!

BP Dawg: doesn’t matter, they still won’t run Southerland. Here’s the deal: Southerland is having to miss games NOW because he rushed back too early after the first surgery on the foot. It’s a very slow-healing bone that he broke and they have to make certain that the screw is going to hold. This kid’s a potential early NFL draft pick. So they’re sticking to the plan that is to ease him back onto the field this week, then let him try full tilt after the off week against Tennessee.

Chip- I’ll just be happy to see him back on the field, but it’s too bad his recovery isn’t coming along faster to where we could get him in those goal line situations. Obviously CMR doesn’t want to risk re-aggravating the injury or hurt his chances in the NFL draft, but he has been sorely missed so far. Like I said before, nothing against Chapas, but Southerland is a bruising fullback, and I have missed seeing his blocks so far this season. I’m sure Moreno and King have as well. I suppose it’s helped Moreno’s TD stats though in goal line situations where in the past we would have used Southerland. I believe Moreno is at 7 TD’s at 4 games in, compared with 14 for all of last year.

Why even bring Southerland back for this game on special teams? Seems like a waste if he tweaks that foot injury. I would think he could get his hitting down in practice. Since he won’t be playing any downs at FB in the game, give him the extra two weeks to heal up w/o risk and go full bore at UT.

in future coach could say: “We want our fans to come prepared to every home game by wearing black T-shirts underneath their red. We aren’t going to say before hand when we will be in black. Everyone will find out just before kickoff.” By making that same routine announcement week by week, without any emphasis, we could pull it off. That’s the only way I can think of to pull off a surprise and capture that magic as we did against Auburn.

It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if we did it just once every two to three years. But I am pretty sure Richt said last year that it would be at least once a season.

It’s my personal opinion that there is nothing more beautiful than our road unies … red hats, black numerals and stitching on a white jersey, silver britches … priceless … stunning. Outside of that, our red jerseys are outstanding, too.

By Huh?

September 22, 2008 12:46 PM | Link to this

It is not a gimmick. Its just a freakin’ jersey. The seniors want to wear them so Richt is going to let them wear them. That is all there is to it. I promise. I’m pretty sure we’re not calling off practice this week because we think the magic of the black jerseys will propel us to victory. I’m pretty sure the team will still be working as hard as ever preparing for what they know will be a very tough game. If we lose you can rejoice because you probably won’t see those black jerseys again for awhile. If we win I look forward to hearing everyone’s b!tching and moaning next time we wear them. At the end of the day I don’t really care if its a gimmick as long as it works. I think its the winning part that bothers the haters the most, not the jersey color. After all, its just a freakin’ jersey. What kind of loser would get bent out of shape over the color of someone’s jersey? That would be PATHETIC.

You are dismissed.

Energy and enthusiasm is an important part of who we are right now. Our best player thrives on it and we rely on a lot of young guys who need it to stay focused. On top of that we’ve had two tough road games in a row, missed some sleep Saturday night travelling and we need the boost.

I always saw this game a sort of “trap game” for us and now it will hold the importance it needs to for us ‘cause Bama is going to be geared up for this and we’d better hit ‘em in the mouth early and often. Then they will crawl away and talk about how they were once really, really good.

thanks j, then ok the coaches have my blessing. I know they will appreciate that.

I don’t think Chapas has missed many blocks, in fact I think he has drawn praise. I also dont think Southerland would have punched that in on the last play. It just wasn’t there. I dont think we’ve misssed him too much in those respects.

However, we used to involve the FB in a variety of ways and we obviously arent right now, so in that respect we are missing a weapon. Doesnt let the 5 yr line reach up and trip him either.

Best Chip Towers blog comment ever — from 1/4/07 on speculation on who would be UGA’s new O line coach:

I’ll probably be assassinated by the Bama Mafia for leaking this secret, but the new OL coach at UGA will be Nick Saban. The Coca-Cola Company has agreed to pay the former Bama coach $5 million a year to be UGA’s OL coach. As part of the deal, the coach formerly known as Saban will change his name to Mello Yello. Coach Yello will distribute Mello Yello coupons and samples to fans in attendance at games, and will get to drive the Mello Yello race car. Coach Yello will have a press conference later today where he will deny that he will be UGA’s OL coach, followed by a press conference tomorrow where he will deny that he will ever be UGA’s OL coach. I think you know what will be the subject of Coach Mello Yello’s Saturday press conference. When asked about his reasons for leaving Bama before getting to Bama, Coach Yello said, “While I’m not going to be UGA’s OL coach, the reason I’m leaving Tuscaloosa, even though I’m never going to leave LSU, I mean Auburn, or whatever the school is called, is because or not because of the big bag of cash, and mostly because of or not because of, as the case may be, the fact that I want my kids to be able to read and/or write, which frankly just won’t happen in the state of Alabama. By the way, have a coupon for delicious Mello Yello. It’s the greatest soft drink in the world. To summarize, I’m not ever going to leave Michigan State, LSU, the Dolphins and/or Auburn or Alabama or whatever that school is called.”

Good job on the black-out, CMR. Let’s just take care of business and please not look ahead to that juggernaut GT team (to hear their giddy fans tell it) so we will be undefeated when we kick their insect tails in November. Prediction: UGA 37, Bugs 20.

I’ll be there in black! Let the seniors have their day. It’s a great gimmick to make the fans feel a part of the game, and it generates a lot of excitement! If it helps the team, who can be against it. We love our Bulldogs!

Crimson Forever, I would think that your team might elect to wear PINK since you got punked on national TV in your own house last year when Stafford threw the TD pass for the win. You do remember that, don’t you? Yes, you do and there are likely still some holes in the wall of your trailer to remind you, cousin kisser boy.

I could care less about black. I don’t wear it, it makes me hot and sweaty. I care about the dawgs preparation, the coaches preparation, will the coaches communicate with each other and the players, etc. I want to see precision, like 11 players on the field for special teams, not 10 or 12. I want to see the offensive line protect Stafford. I want to see Richt get mad as heck again till the coaches and players get it right, like a huge reduction in penalties!!!!! The final score, the results, is what gets me excited, not rinky dinky black shirts. Cut out the foolishness and GET THE JOB DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While watching the Ga/ASU game on ABC, did anyone notice the unusual crowd roar on TV, which seemed to continue, non-stop during the entire game. It sounded “piped in” like the bird chirps which are dubbed during golf tournaments. Flipping back between the other games on other networks, I didn’t notice the roar being so loud or continuous. ASU’s stadium didn’t seem to be that large, nor did their fans seem to be that vocal. And, the roar mysteriously disappeared when the commentators spoke. Just a question if anyone can comment. Thanks and GO DAWGS!!!!!

LOL Ole Slick Nick is not coming into a team that’s dead tried worn out from a west coast trip instead Coach Richt flipped the script on him…Bama thought they were going to be able to take advantage of a tired but oh contraire there coming to play a team that’s fired up ready to prove they deserve to be #1 in the land with the emotion of the BLACKOUT & the bigness of the game firing them up…This will also counter act all the media’s questions to the players about the trip now the electric atmosphere of the blackout will be the focus…You might just see more than black jerseys it could be a TOTAL BLACKOUT: black helmets, jersey’s & pants. The rumor is that’s what the player’s want to do. Personally I want to see red helmets & silver britches but if it takes a total blackout to get the players geaked up then I’m all for it! Football is a game of emotion & things like this can give one team the mental edge… Richt has winning record against the dreaded Nick Satan! I’ve been worried this game for months due (more so since they beat Clemson) to the west coast trip now instead I’m fired up & ready for the teams to GET IT ON so bring on Slick Nasty Nick! Coach Richt has sent the message to the players & Dawg Nation that it’s time to GET UP! for Bama.

Dawg Dunk 1988 - Everybody knows, but you obviously, that UGA is the “COW” school. Thanks for the heads up, we would not want to park our clean tractors and trucks within 25 MILES of that stinking place you call home, Sanford Stadium, not UGA stadium, you red neck, nose picking UGA fan. You certainly didn’t graduate from any high school, much less UGA High. By the way, would you make sure that all the chicken houses are cleaned out by Saturday so we don’t have to smell you UGA fans with that chicken “S—T” on your shoes!! I personnally think this a great idea to get our team and fans hopped up. Sometimes it is a little too quite between the Hedges. If Dooley had done this maybe he would have won a couple of more National Championships. BTW I would like to see us wear the black pants, white pants and red pants occasionally as well on the road. Maybe we will do a whiteout at Auburn, wouldn’t that be great since we haven’t done it since January 1, 1967 in the Cotton Bowl against SMU.

I don’t think UGAy will be able to run the ball against the Tide. Bama’s D-fense is off the hook. As long as JPW doesn’t turn it over, it is curtains for the Dawgs. I guess wearing black to a funeral is appropriate.

Ray Ray- I believe Alabama will be team that has trouble running the ball as the Dawgs have been improving each game and getting a little more aggresive on D each week. Anyways it should be a great and interesting game.

I think that the black jerseys are the best uniform mix with the red helmet that I have ever seen. It makes the “G” stand out beautifully because that’s where the focus goes. First set foot on campus as a student 46yrs ago. When the “G” changed shape to mimic Green Bay’s “G”, very few wanted to hang onto our beloved “square G”. This uni is dynamite! Before it’s intro, the red top was my favorite, but change is good. The seniors show good sense and taste. I don’t think they will accept a loss in this uniform, no matter who the opponent. The team has the most clout on this issue because they have to wear it and last I heard everyone likes it.

UgaVII-Get those chip clips situated for your smile this weekend. You have more wrinkles than honeymoon sheets. It wouldn’t hurt if you accentuated that octopus so Bama knows where to kiss.

I hope UGA fans don’t claim the guy posting as blackout to be one of their own. What a pathetic piece of crap. I wonder what your parents would think of you putting down a dead Downs syndrome kid.

From the posts earlier this preseason you would have thought UGA fans were going to send their practice squad to play in this game. It seems your perspective has certainly changed and I see that you now adequately fear us enough to call for a blackout.

You can’t win because of some gimmick. This is Alabama you’re playing. Its not Hawaii or Vandy or whoever. We have our own tradition and mystique that far surpasses your own. This is not a program that can be intimidated by anyone or anything.

The mammoths that we are bringing on our offensive and defensive lines are coming to play a physical style of football you haven’t seen.

I can’t wait to see All American offensive tackle Andre Smith and all conference center Caldwell pound your d lineman into that red Georgia clay. Likewise I can’t wait to see our nimble footed 365 pound noseguard tossing 2 UGA offensive lineman around at a time like they was ragdolls. Deep down inside every dawg fan on this post knows da_n well that we are going to absolutely dominate the battle in the trenches. Even Richt knows this and is trying to pull out all the stops to gain every little edge he can. Doesn’t matter. It won’t help.

When these boys punch your guys in the mouth on the first play on both sides of the line you will then at that point understand what intimidation is all about. And it aint about the color of a jersey.

Sobedawg,

U must not have watched much football this season. Nobody at all has been able to get to Parker all season or did you not notice that. He can take a nap back there if he wants to with all america tackle big Andre Smith protecting his back. Conversely our defense has been harassing qbs all over. Cullen Harper can tell you all about all the sacks he took and this was without blitzing.

If Stafford got sacked several times by the chickens and then again several times by a Pac 10 team than you can count on him having a very long night against the Bama D. You have absolutely nobody that can block our massive 365lb nosetackle. Your o-line is in trouble!

Going strictly by sack totals through 4 games on both sides of the ball you can count on Stafford being harassed all night while JP can take a nap back there if he pleases.

The Bulldogs don’t need any extra motivation this week against a Top 10 opponent in front of the Gameday Crew. That’s why I was hoping they’d wait until the Tennessee game to break out the black. But I agree that heat is a concern in black, and that game against UT could be a hot 3:30 kickoff. I don’t want black jerseys in bowl games because a blackout really only works at home. Likewise, in Jacksonville, a crowd of 50% black just isn’t very intimidating.

to Bama is Blacked Out - i love how everyone wants to bring up how much money Saban is being paid. Go ask Mark Richt if he would turn away a contract like that - I bet he’d say, “Where do I sign?”. Trust me, he’ll be getting that kind of smack very soon - what will you say then?

to Blacked Out - nice comments about Stallings son. Very classy - i’m sure your mother is proud. Know this - when Munson passes away - you won’t hear any “true” Bama fans say anything derogatory about this hall of fame Broadcaster. So, nice move on your part you fuggin moron.

to Dawg_1988 - you mentioned last years game and the overtime victory. I’m glad you did. Let me remind you that you were playing a team that was nowhere near as talented as this year’s team. Plus last years Tide squad had a few “me” players that didn’t buy into CNS’s “process”. That is not the case this year.

to Phone Guy - yeah, both teams have had some “cupcakes” on the schedule. But, for some reason, when we win those games we go up in the rankings and when you win your games you seem to slip. Go figure…

Now, I love the Tide and I have been a fan since the Curry years. I live in Ga and root as hard as i possibly can for UGA. They are my 2nd favorite college team. This game is going to be low scoring (like last years) and will be decided off special teams and turnovers. I think both of the offenses and defenses are a wash. It will be a great game and may even be the college game of this year. Knowshon scares me - last year was his “coming out” party.

to the point of the post - i think the jerseys are a gimmick to try to give a team that needs help a little boost. it won’t make knowshon jump higher or run faster and it dam sure won’t intimidate the Crimson Tide. Wear whatever the hell you want to wear. The Tide is for real and you better not look past us…

For more than 40 years the dawgs have lined up and hunkered down in two colors; Red & White. It’s tradition. We don’t need stunts or gimicks. We’re Georgia! Not Oregon! It’s great that it got the team and fans up last year, but making it a regular part of the rotation is a bit Jim Donnan-esk to me (black stipe down the helmet). Wearing a different color shirt doesn’t help me do my job any better, and it doesn’t make us a better football team. When we tee it up between the hedges, wins will be earned by being the better team with a rich and glorious tradition; not because of a jersey. But hey, either way; GO DAWGS!

JW , how do you know what its like at an Auburn or TN game? Lets me guess, you were there when they were playing UGA. (or more probably, you are just guessing) Ya think that might have been a big game for them?

Oddly enough, when its not CMU in town (which the students were that last to get there and the first to leave) it tend to ratchet up a few notches, just like every other place.

Obviously you were not at the last Auburn or LSU, or TN game in Sanford.

I guess it totally slipped past you that 20,000 UGA fans just treked across the country this past weekend.to support thier dawgs. It’s only Mid September.

I’ll be there for this one, screaming along with the rest of the Dawgs fans. And yes, it will be loud. And yes, you know you are full of crap saying its not going to be so after the first quarter.

1UGADWG, you are obviously too old to be on a computer, dude. I would surmise that you have been there for the entire 40+ years - even through the ^%#$@& Goff & Donnan years that you mentioned. Here’s a hint - Donnan and Goff both sukt and it was all because of Dewlee not wanting anyone to up his record. Got it? Think about it. Just go into your kitchen, open up a Coke, take a few sips and think about it. It ain’t that hard, man. Dewlee didn’t want anyone else in there who he thought might beat his record…..there’s a nugget so just let it sink in for a moment. Okay now, back with me, geezer? It does absolutely make a difference what color jersey UGA wears, old timer. If CMR is able to motivate the team (and fans) on Saturday with the BLACK tops, then it is all worth it. College games are based entirely upon emotion, old timer. Don’t you get that? What’s wrong with you? I hope that you have a blanket to hold while UGA kicks some major butt this Saturday, geezer. Hey, it’s a late game so the chances of you catchig it are way, way down. Have a nice nap there, boy.

In all of sports, Larry Munson is the best announcer of all-time. Baseball had a few like him. College Football used to have some like him. None have endured to this day, but Larry Munson. We Georgia Bulldogs have always turned off every broadcast volume except for his. Our opponents recognize that in post-game comments, they are forced to respond to his call of the game. Everyone knows Larry Munson is a Georgia Bulldog. We are worried about this team’s strength. They are good; very good. Can we contain that guy. Our guys are there; who’s got it. Run. Run. Run. We just broke them. We’re open in the end zone. Down the sideline, we go. We just ran right over them. A Freshman. They just can’t stop us; it’s been a battle. We’ve got a man there. I wish Larry Munson nothing but the best personally. For all the kids who never will get their play at Georgia immortalized, we can always imitate Larry Munson and how he would have told the world how the play actually looked. His grovel voice pleading that our opponent not be as good as they seemed to Larry Munson, clearly endeared himself to every opponent each week. My God, they are good he would exclaim. If you haven’t already, you might want to read the comments by other teams’ fans about how much they Love Larry Munson. One would think that his partisan Georgia Bulldog viewpoint would grate on our opponents. It never did. They would just sit there and listen in awe with all the rest of the sports’ world. There might never be another who can emulate, but there should be a School of Journalism course designed to do nothing but study how a game is described for their fans. In closing out his illustrious career, it is only fitting that he would think of us. If you want to be a broadcaster, you must have a thorough study of how he so enjoys life and knows that he is there for us to color the pageantry of a sports’ contest. “I can’t express enough my deep feelings toward the Georgia football fans,” Munson said in a release. “They have been so friendly especially during this most recent period of time. I feel I owe them so much more than I can give. I’ll remember all the great times with the Dogs and have the fondest wishes and good luck toward them all.” It is not us that you owe, but we. Thank you.

I nominate Larry Munson for The Legendary Larry Munson Award.

Alabama hasn’t played anyone who can run the football. UGA can with Knowshon Moreno. John Parker Wilson, Pat Dye former assistant to Bear Bryant who absolutely was certain that he would replace the Bear, might be the more experienced QB of him and Matthew Stafford, but John Parker Wilson will be 17-14 after he plays Matthew Stafford. UGA lines are better than Alabama’s.

What’s this - the 3rd time in the last 5 or 6 games. Alabama’s a big game - but all of ‘em are if UGA wants a shot at getting in the NC game. I don’t really see a reason for the black jerseys now. Surely the players and fans will be up for the Alabama game regardless of the color of the jerseys. Let’s not overplay this thing to the point that the ‘black-out” loses its edge.

As a dawg fan in Alabama, it’s awful, but just make sure the Bulldog Nation knows, the Alabama Players are actually saying they think its CUTE we are going to wear our black jerseys. Its on the actual news of players saying this. UGA Defense, get the smug little quarterback - JP- and set him down a few times, quickly!!! Get up on them early Dawgs and get up Big - LEAVE NO DOUBT should be our slogan for the remainder of the year…. LEAVE NO DOUBT- UGA is one of the top teams in the nation.

I think the fans should choose the blackout game once a year. Tell the fans what they think is the biggest game and come wearing black to that game. Then once the dawgs start pregame workouts red look in the stands and if they fill they want to black it out then come back out in black. That way the opposing team never knows!!!

I know its said in the locker rooms, but hey, he was stupid enough to say it and have it on record in PUBLIC…

so we should shut him up in public

STephen, glad you translated that for me because I couldn’t understand a word of that. Yeah, I’m sure that will get to the UGA players and coaches before gametime and it WILL NOT be good for the tide. UGA kills…42-3! Third string in for UGA by the 4th qtr. JPW cries just like Colt Brennan. Gonna kind of feel sorry for him.

Oledawg:

Just to clarify… my statement wasn’t that UGA SHOULD lose to LSU or Bama. Of course, I hope we win them all.

With an SEC schedule winning 20 games in a row is a tall order and IF we lose a game I hope it is LSU or Bama. Auburn while being a West opponent, would likely be too late in the year for UGA to overcome and get into the NCG, but that would probably be my 3rd pick.

Bama is getting better under Saban, lets just hope that they aren’t quite there yet and that we get the W Saturday night.

Jennifer Parker Wilson is as overated as Beanie “my toe is killing me” Wells. UGA will dominate and Julio and Jennifer will look like Calvin Johnson and Reggie Ball. I would like to quote my close friend, PBR=AMERICA IN A CAN, BUCK FAMA. Bama is almost as overated as Clemson was.

Wasn’t UGA helmet’s silver without the “G” before Dooley changed them to red with the “G”? Silver helmet with the “G”, I think I would like them with the black jersey and silver britches.

Why ROBBOB?

Then they would look like the criminals of the NFL…the Oakland Raiders….come to think of it….

Yes!!!! DING, DING, DING!!!! That will work perfectly for UGA. Black and Silver= the ghetto Raiders, and the Criminal Crime DAWGS!!!!

I love the idea!!!! then the both teams representing the NFL and NCAA football will officially don the black and silver combination as nothing more than criminals and ghetto superstars!!!!

HAHAHA!!! What UGA d*******!!!!!!

I am kind of torn between this. I am sort of a traditionalist, I love those red jerseys with those silver britches, nothing to me looks finner in the land. Yet, those black jerseys look really good to. I don’t mind wearing the black jerseys more often. Obviously this is a big game. It is a night game televised by ESPN, Game Day is going to be there, and two top ten teams playing against each other, it kind of makes sense to wear the black jerseys. Now I don’t want to see them every other game but it is nice to sort of get that feel we had at the Auburn game. Everyone is pumped about this game because it is a blackout, so whatever motivates our team and gets us a W, I am for it.

Here is another proposition for everyone, what about bringing out the red pants with the white shirt for the Tennessee game. As everyone recalls, the 1980 game when Herschel ran over Bill Bates they wore the red pants. I personally love the red pants and would like to see them pulled out again, and by the way, we won that game against Tennessee.

Let’s face it. Big time college football has evolved into “gladiatorial combat” that reminds many of the Roman Empire. I grew up in Georgia and have lived in Birmingham for 32 years. Many misconceptions about Alabama football in Georgia….and vice versa I’m sure. I think Georgia should leave the uniforms alone. They have been tinkering with the red, white, and black for years now. Why …? The uniforms of the 70’s looked fantastic. As for Alabama, they’ve left theirs alone. I think it’s the classiest look out there.

The blackout is fine and fun. Nick Saban was wearing a black golf shirt in his weekly press conference. When asked why, he replied that it was his last clean shirt. So have some fun with it I say.

It will come down to Bama’s O line vs Georgia’s D line. And it will be the hardest hitting game of the year. The mentally toughest will prevail. The jersey thing will be fun but have no effect on the outcome. The winner will remain the team that executes the best. It will be loud for both teams.
