UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Dogs bring the heat to the desert
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
TEMPE, AZ. — Heat. What heat?
While it may not be the signature win people were hoping for, Georgia’s 27-10 win over Arizona State was certainly solid and made a statement that their lofty rankings and expectations weren’t all hype.
The Bulldogs came 1,900 miles to play last year’s Pac-10 runners-up in the desert heat and were clearly the dominant team all night. Rudy Carpenter and the Sun Devils’ offense got a few yards but the numbers that matter in this game were these: Knowshon Moreno 23 carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns, A.J. Green eight catches for 159 yards, Matt Stafford 285 yards passing and — THE DOOZY — ASU 4 rushing yards on 19 carries.
Georgia outgained them 461 to 212 and had two drives end on the 1 without getting into the end zone, including the last play when Shaun Chapas did not get into the end zone for the TD.
That was a notable play in that Georgia coach Mark Richt in the past usually would take a knee with the game won there. But maybe he’s paying attention to the polls and going for that six more points.
All and all a very solid victory. Of course, Alabama looked positively dynamic in its 49-14 win at Arkansas today. So that sets up for a colossal SEC matchup next Saturday in Athens.
ESPN GameDay was considering heading to Athens this week. Think they should?
And what about those penalties? With 12 on Saturday, Dogs are averaging close to 11 per game. That’ll get them beat eventually. To be sure, some of those Saturday were reaching deep in the refs’ technical bag.
What’s your thoughts on the game? Dogs make a statement or just taking care of business?

Very good win by the team tonight. Chip, 2 weeks ago you were questioning whether this year’s defense was any good. After holding the last 2 opponents to 17 total points and only allowing 4 yards rushing in tonight’s game, would you like a chance to amend your previous thoughts about the defense?

Bottom line is the “W”! Plenty of room for improvement, but we will improve as we go. Big concern would be the “West-East” jet lag for the Bama game. See you in Athens next week for a royal street fight.

Next week:
Knowshon and King combine for 60 yards. Stafford gets drilled all night, throws two picks before leaving the game with a sprained uterus. Skinny AJ spits up blood after exposing his ribcage while catching a high ball near McClain.
Bama 27-17.
UGA ranked number 12, loses three more games.

The ESPN would be smoking crack not to bring Gameday to Athens next week.
The Dawgs looked very good against a solid opponent tonight. I was very impressed, again, with Stafford’s composure and Green’s ridiculous athleticism. Knowshon is a freak.
If the Dawgs have a letdown this season, it all boils down to penalties. CMR will be working the guys over big time with their stupid mistakes this week.

No way!! Dawgs will be less distracted if they’re not there. Our run defense should shut them down…our offense needs to work on their redzone performance…tonight’s score should have easily been over a 20 point victory.

Umm, I think we need to throw it to Green a little more. Do we not have a better backup at FB? Also have a lot of work to do in kickoff coverage. I worry about our O-line. Bama defensive front will be scary compared to ASU. Good win on the West coast though. Coming out party of AJ Green and Moreno is simply awesome. GO DAWGS!

Good win…likely to be punished by the pollsters for not rolling up the 40 pts we should have. Dawgs - Bama should be a shoot out! O-line needs to pick this week to gel and bring both pass block and run block together. Go Dawgs!

Play calling is suspicious sometimes, but Im wondering what the offense is holding back for the big boys. We will see if Bobo lets it loose against bama.
The team is great, but the penalties are a HUGE problem. At least one drive killed today on a penalty, more than one ASU drive continued on a penalty. This will lead to a loss if it continues. However, I did see a few calls that looked like home cookin’.

Well, as much as it kills me to say it, I don’t think we’re winning a championship with a team as undisciplined as this one. Too many penalties, eventually it’ll bite us in a big game at a bad time. O line grew some, but not enough as evidenced by inability to score from inside the 3 a total of 5 times over two drives. Finally, AJ had a different coverage package in second half, which is why he got one catch after halftime.

Now we know how Oklahoma felt after all the bad calls by the officials but still no excuse as the Dawgs should have scored at least two more TDs. Defense looked solid most of the night, better job of mixing up the schemes. Stafford had better stop throwing off that back foot as at some point it will cost us a game. The play calling and poor execution on some plays was atrocious. But as they say the Dawgs were pretty well in control all night and it is good to get a win.

Bama’s quite good, no doubt. But Arkansas is really, really, really, really, really, really (you get the idea) BAAAAAD. (Thank you so much Bobby for leaving the Falcons for THIS. I guess those little piggies really respond well to your “coaching” style. Yeah, I know this isn’t related to Georgia-Bama, but it bears repeating any time and any place.)

This game was never in doubt, nor was last week’s game (in my mind, at any point). But, I am sorely disappointed in the play calling tonight, especially at the goal line. If the Dawgs can’t punch it in with 1st and goal, TWICE, late in the fourth quarter, they could end up with a loss or two. I read with delight the first few weeks with everyone talking about losses (feeling we can sweep without issue this season). But, with the play calling, the penalties (which come from young freshmen) and the inability to punch it in (although, I admit, we didn’t NEED it), I’m getting a tad worried. More importantly, and even my wife can’t understand, the Dawgs needed another score for the pollsters. Not because I wanted it, or even the team wanted it… it’s the pollsters who want it. I won’t be surprised if Florida and even Missou jump them Dawgs this week. However, (that’s better than a big butt ;-) if the Dawgs sweep, and I still think they can, the polls will in fact take care of themselves. They will be in the MNC after they win the SEC Championship… NO DOUBT. Come on Dawgs, FINISH THE DRILL! WOOF-WOOF!

Offense: B+…Dropped TD, missing 2 TD’s inside the 10, line needs to work, Fumbled snaps and mishandled pitch looked bad All thta said, Moreno-Stafford-Green=STUDS!
Defense: A-…soft coverage led to 10 pts, bad blitz package or lack there of no help in pressure on pass. 4 Yrds rushing for AZ state was fantastic!
Special teams: C….Walsh kicking the ball deeper but coverage stunk, Gray looked like he was running in slow motion on punt returns.

This coming from a fan of a team that has beaten who exactly? You just beat a team that had to rally from behind to beat one I-AA team in the fourth quarter and then another terrible team the next week. You sputter around against a crappy Tulane team and beat them by a whopping 13. Wow, that was impressive. You are hanging your head on beating a crappy clemson team, that would be about the 7th or 8th best team in the SEC. You Gumpers are so delusional that it’s getting really sad.

POSTGAME
Hey guys. Man, these late games are a nightmare for us guys on East Coast deadlines… .
Again, very solid performance by Dogs. Here’s a few things CMR said that didn’t make my stories:
On season so far:
“I like where we are. It’s nice to be 4-0 but we have not played our best game yet.”
On the travel plan and being 27-4 on opposing fields of play:
“We came here strictly on a business trip. We came here to win. We were not here to make a statement.”
On being balanced — 176 rush, 285 pass:
“We always want to be a two-dimensional team. If you’re one dimensional you will not win.”
On ASU QB Rudy Carpenter:
“I was impressed with Rudy’s stature in the pocket. We disrupted a couple of times. But we need to improve in the area of pass rush.”
On success throwing to A.J. Green early:
“They were primarily in single coverage in the first half and Stafford took advantage of that.”
I”ve got to get out of the press box so I’ll check in in the morn.

You have beaten nobody!!! Your program is overrated, your coach is a slimy low life, and you and your fans are the biggest idiot in college football. By the way, I’m sort of curious,”Who won the last game played between Georgia and Alabama and where was the game played? Who went 6-6 last year? Why? Who is the best offensive team that Alabama has played this year? Of all the points scored this year by Alabama, how many were actually scored by its offense? Of all the points scored by Georgia this year, how many have been actually scored by its offense? Is Clemson the very best two dimensional team that Alabama has played? Which team has played the most difficult road games this year so far? Has Alabama really played a team with Georgia’s passing talents and if so, whom and what game statistics prove it? The winner of the GA-Alabama game will be the team that is most consistent and plays with the fewest mistakes. Neither team thus far has done a particularly good job with this. Alabama is actually better than Georgia with respect to keeping penalties in check. Georgia has a far more effective passing game thus far. Matthew Stafford is far more apt to beat Alabama with his passing effectiveness than vice versa. Both teams seem to be balanced. Both defenses are aggressive. Georgia has played a team that is far better defensively than any that Alabama has played thus far. It was thought that Clemson would have been the best offense played by these two teams, but now it appears that South Carolina probably was the best team that was played between Georgia and Alabama and it seems that ASU has the better offense. It is probable that Georgia has been more thoroughly tested than Alabama. Playing in Athens certainly will not help Alabama. This will be the first time this year that Alabama has played an inspired team that matches its talent. Both teams are very talented. Alabama probably has the advantage on the offensive line, but Georgia has the better passing QB. Both teams have excellent running backs and both teams have very good defensive teams and special teams. The team that wins will be the one that is most inspired and makes the fewest mistakes and that includes penalties. Georgia will win if they play up to their potential. Alabama will win if Georgia continues to commit penalties and drop passes. It should be a good game. It is my humble opinion that Georgia will win this one, but let’s play the game anyway; it is possible that I could be wrong.

Anyone who doesn’t respect a SEC East team is an idiot anyway. The only real push overs are in the west with Arkansas, Ole Miss (can we take away their SEC Card please, and Miss State. Enough said since Aub/LSU has won the west 6 out of the last 8 years.
Everyone else is at least tough.
Bama will give us fits much like last year when our O-line was young and trying to gel. Ingram good as Special K? If you actually make it to Athens for the game do bring me some of what your smoking.
Prediction
UGA 24 Bama 20
So is roll tide trying to say that Arkansas is better than Zona State? Possibly but I can promise you that Petrino’s team will not be ranked this year and are you willing to bet me that ASU will be near the end?

I am not a pathetic loser, just a loser will do. Pathetic is a bit too descriptive for the kind of loser that I aspire to be; besides, there are far too many losers described with this adjective. In the future, if anyone wishes to ascribe the label ‘loser’ to me, please be a pal and just keep the pathetic part to yourself. I would like to keep the ‘loser’part unique to me. Assign the descriptor, ‘pathetic’ to all the others who don’t mind the boilerplate moniker that is entirely overused. Losers, like me, deserve better treatment and respect. Thank you so much for this simple, but kind consideration. It will mean so much to me. Peace out!

That was a lot of fun watching Phillip Fulmer’s vols being booed by their own orange-pajama-clad fans.
vols What’s happened to your football program ?
You call that a quarterback ?
Jonathan Crompton is horrid.
Oregon Lost to Boise State. There are now no Pacific-Ten (1) teams ranked in any poll except for the looking awesome Southern California team. How can 1 team be so good, and no one else in the conference ? Sounds like what we hear out of the Big 10 every year.
How far are Oregon, East Carolina, West Virginia, Florida State and Auburn going to fall ?
Georgia Bulldogs are No. 1 in the BCS Computer Polls. Southern California is 5th and Oklahoma is 9th average BCS Computer Poll Rankings.
SEC is now 25-4 Non-Conference.
18-4 versus Football Bowl Subdivision SEC.
10-12 Pacific-Ten (1) versus Football Bowl Subdivision.
10-11 Big East against Football Bowl Subdivision.
The Big XII has lost 8 games against the Football Bowl Subdivision.
The Big Ten ((11) [0] has lost 8 games versus Football Bowl Subdivision.
The ACC also has 8 Losses against the Football Bowl Subdivision.
A.J. Green now has 16 catches; Mohamed Massaquoi has 14; both have 2 Touchdowns.
Knowshon Moreno has 7 catches for a hundred yards and 455 rushing yards including 9 Touchdowns.
Perhaps the most impressive of Matthew Stafford’s Junior season will not be his 3,000 yards passing against this level of competition, but his zero interceptions to-date.
Alabama’s Nick Saban, who no one likes, now faces its toughest test of the season at Georgia. Alabama only plays 3 football games all season long, UGA, LSU and Auburn.
And, yes Tennessee vols, that is a dissin’ of you - the dead last worst team in The SEC East.

Yeah, I agree, Barkin’Dog, that the play calling in the 4th quarter was extremely conservative. I too would have liked to have seen, at the least, some type of option play or QB bootleg down inside the ASU 5 yard line.
While I’m not totally in agreement with the called plays down there in the 4th quarter, I think that you can probably attribute this to Coach Mark Richt not wanting to appear to be trying to run the score up on ASU Coach Dennis Erickson as CMR just seems to be much too considerate that way at times. Particularly, when playing against coaches with more tenure than himself.
He seems very concerned with showing that his team has class, IMO, sometimes overly so. Hey, at least that’s a very nice problem to have, if indeed it actually is one.

Please explain to me how only 1 catch in the second half , you’ve got to free up yopur playmakers by putting in different places within the offense . Not scoring from inside the 5 twice shows how much the offense misses Southerland. Also it seems to me that every positive gain the sun devils made , had #3 Mr Evans attached to the play . I’m not for slamming anybody down , but the facts speak for themselves, to much cushion all night long , bad angles , etc. It was not until Coach Martinez brought them up did we finally slow em down . The penalties have to be cut in half going forward , not a Great effort but never the less a really good one on the road . Now comes the tide , We’ll know just where we are next Saturday . Roll Tide:
Bold prediction.
Hope your Alabama players are as smug about the outcome of next week’s game as you are.
Georgia’s young OL could be hurt by the Alabama DL. It’s true that the matchup there could be a problem. And AJ Green’s not as good as Julio Jones, and Moreno’s overrated, and John Parker Wilson’s the QB Matthew Stafford hopes to be.
Georgia won’t score, and the Tide will roll up 100 points in Athens against the pathetic Georgia defense.
You just go right on believing all that. Spread it around. Tell all of your friends. And while you’re at it, you can tell them that Nick Saban’s a man of his word, that he is honorable and decent and never tells a lie, sort of like George Washington. You can tell them that he’s an upright guy in recruiting, and that he would never, ever get you guys put on probation. You could tell them that you can guarantee that the Tide will win big in Athens, because those Dawgs ain’t nothin’.
Go ahead. Flap your jaws all over the place, if it makes you feel better about yourself.
We’ll see you on the field. Next Saturday.

My thought on ESPN College Gameday in Athens.
Just wondering if they could set up on the bridge with the stadium as the backdrop if there are logistical problems with setting up on the student center as last time.

ASU let UGA beat them two weeks in a row. We were in their heads last week too. As for you tide fans talking trash, enjoy being undefeated for another 6 days because it all ends in Athens with ESPN and the whole world watching. UGA 42 UA 14.

The fact that Stafford hasn’t thrown an INT is huge. He doesn’t put the defeense in a bad position and gives the Dawgs a couple of more offensive series a game to do something with the ball.

KonaBuzz,
I think the reference to the computer polls was composite, not specific. And it figures that the opponent is downgraded by you immediately after defeat. If the Sun Devils had won, they wuld have been USC’s chief rival for the Pac 10. Now they’re lower tier. Whatever.

I’ll echo your sentiments about Fulmer. Although this UT season looks like last season in the W and L columns after 3 games, that’s where it ends. I don’t see the 2008 team Atop Rocky being able to do what the 2007 group did without a Cutciffe and an Ainge dealing. Gonna take a huge leap and me and 107,000 don’t see it happening. May the team prove us wrong.

Hey UGAly Fans! Not so soon my young redneck pups. Your season is just beginning, as you still have played NOBODY worth a crap. GT rushed for more yards against your so called powerhouse SEC foe Miss State, then UGAly had in totoal offense against a team that lost to UNLV the previous week. Let me explain something to all of you. First, you will not go undefeated, Second, you will lose at least 3 games, with one being GT. Third, None of your players will win the Heisman. Your team is overated every year. BAMA will beat you, as will LSU, probably Auburn (Although, they only beat MSU 3-2 lol!), and GT. Another team will squeek in a win somehwere along the way. Keep dreaming, but it ain’t happening this year! Sorry DAWGS! GO BAMA!

The Pac 10 will have one team ranked in the top 25- USC at #1. The SEC should have 6 teams in the top 25, 4 in the top 10, yet their best team rates no better than #3 in the polls? It’a almost as ridiculous as those phantom calls last night.
UGA now has a better Pac 10 record than the Condoms.

A couple of points from the game. I noticed not alot of rotation with WRs. Green and Massaquoi played alot. Also, I don’t look at the penalities. The officiating was so one sided. One drive (35 yrds) in penalities. The result… A FG. The holding call on Asher was a joke. The Wr grabbed him first. The leap on the FG… Guess the refs never seen anyone other than MJ jump that high. If UF would have won more impressively, they would have probably jumped UGA in the polls. We don’t have a tough schedulr(sarcasm) Our scedule is a joke. That’s what all the haters will say all year long. After we beat UA, they will lose to ole ms. or someone , and then the win will be discredited yet again. Did anyone see Carpenter’s body language in the first half after that sack by Rennie. Almost looked like Colt in the Sugar Bowl last year. So, Rudy UGA is just another team ; nope not fast , not USC. Care to make an amendment on that comment you dumb#$@! Go UGA; DAWGS #1

Hey KonaBuzz,
I agree with your statement above. They beat a lowly Pac 10 team. So lets see what they have done this year! 1) Beat Ga. Southern (Top Team - Powerhouse) 2) Beat Central Michigan (Top Team - Powerhouse) 3) Beat SC (Top Team - Powerhouse) Lost to Vandy and almost Wofford. 4) Beat ASU (Top Team - Powerhouse) Lost to UNLV! A team that has won just two games in 4 seasons. All this bragging and you have played no one!!!! GO BAMA and whoever plays UGAly. Oh, you better worry about the Jackets, as they kick your azzes this year between the rotten hedges. LMFAO!

Good Game Dawgs - HERE COMES BAMA!!!!!!
From what I have seen this year - Bama will roll in Athens - UGA IS SOLID _ BUT OVER RATED!!!! * UGA will lose 3 to 4 games this year - starting with BAMA!!*
Why do I say this?:
Dawgs have not looked overwhelmingly good this year - except for Central Michigan. Even then pass defense looked only good - not great or dominent.
NO pass rush
Corner and Safety play is only good - not great - right side where #3 CB & #5 Safety is not that good - was exploited against SC and AZ State. Very average and in fact poor play at times - neither are solid tacklers.
Special Teams on kickoffs horrible - this will bite against top notch competition - UGA consistently concedes great starting position
Penalty prone - UGA has committed stupid penalities that give your opponent life and extend drives - this is a solid trend that you can not just stop in one game - it is where and who you are.
Both are good very YOUNG teams - but based on what I have seen - Bama has not only caught up to UGA - but has passed them.
Should be a very good game - but Bama is clearly playing better - disciplined, tougher, and looks like they have their act together on defense and offense - much more so than UGA.

Shucks, if Bama comes into Athens and wins…ain’t gonna happen. Come on in and talk smack, Tide Rollers, the game is played on the field. It feels a lot better AFTER you go into the other team’s place and take them out, e.g., last year’s game when we hadn’t quite jelled. Yesterday, Casey Dick tossed a couple of softballs straight to your DBs for TDs- Matt is going to launch rockets straight to MoMass and AJ between Knowshon and King slicing and dicing. Have fun deciding who you’re going to defend. And when you go on O, watch out for our LB duo shutting down your rushing game. Having to win by the air will be “interesting” for Tide Fans as Georgia systematically adds points and you fall steadily behind. Our guys are not only better than yours, they’re smarter.

Just a thought. A potential season-ending chop block (not called) is a helluva lot more serious than a phantom tripping penalty (called). While I am disappointed that the Dawgs didn’t score more points and had so many penalties, I did notice that there were many true freshmen and other names I didn’t recognize on the field. Just wait until the young ones get more experience and CMR quits substiting so much. If you remember he did the same last year. I expect to see less players on the field starting this week against Bama.
Also I think CMR was not more open on the goal line plays because he wanted the OL and blockers to EARN it. That they didn’t should provide motivation for hard work to get ready for this week. Go DAWGS.

I thought we (UGA) looked really good last night. Some of the penalties called on us were crazy, you might not see a tripping or personal foul for trying to block a fieldgoal again for a really long time (both of those calls were ridiculous along w/ the pass interference call on Asher Allen after he the INT). Green looks like he is going to be a bigtime player. Both offensive line and defensive lines looked better, both still need some work. How about Rennie Curren he’s awesome. If they can continue to tighten up in certain areas they are going to be tough to beat. How about Urban Cryer looking like a PHYSCO yesterday in the Tennessee game, did anybody see that? (there is something about that guy I just don’t like). Dawghater your a moron! Bama is very tallented but they don’t scare me they had 2 absolute gift TDs. They look good but they can be beat. Black it out & bring it on Bama.

The Dawgs looked pretty good last night, certainly not great. Lots of room for improvement. Not that it matters in the polls, but a good barometer for a team is how they fare against the point spread. The Vegas line takes into account all of the variables and says that team A should beat team B by so many points based on those variables. So far this year the Dawgs are 2-0-1 against the spread. While the fans and pollsters may want them to run up 40 or 50 points, Vegas oddsmakers have more realistic expectations and UGA has exceeded those expectations. Like I said, there is lots of room for improvement. Penalties are really hurting us. So are bad passes and dropped passes. A huge weakness is the inability to get pressure on the qb without blitzing. Bama will be the biggest test to date. On paper we should have laid wood on every team we’ve played so far. On paper Bama should be a worthy opponent and if they don’t work out some of the problems it could be our first loss. It will be the first true challenge for both teams and I like our chances, but they know our weaknesses and will try to exploit them. The emergence of Green should open up the running game a little, so we need to mix it up and play smart football. Another 100 yard penalty game is unacceptable.

Alabama has possibly the best run-stuffing DL in the country in Cody and the LT is called by some the best OL in years. Andre Smith may be the no. 1 pick in the NFL draft next year. He was out for the Tulane game but he’s back and dominant as ever. You have an edge at QB, but the backs and receivers are very comparable (we’ll take your Moreno/King, Green, and Mass and raise you an Ingram/Coffee/Grant/Upchurch, Jones, and Maze. Oh, and OUR TE (19 catches) doesn’t suck like Trippy) and our line is clearly superior. Mark my words, your OL will be treated like Clemson’s but your D will play better than theirs. Again, 27-17 Bama sounds about right.

I agree. There were some very bad calls last night. I was glad to see that they didn’t call a late hit on the qb on that late AZ drive though. Thought for sure they would given the earlier calls. That leaping penalty was probably the biggest b.s. penalty I have seen this year. I wish the refs would heed what the announcer said on that qb hit, “after all, its still football”. The refs and the NCAA should remember that. So should the NFL for that matter. I understand protecting the players but they have gone overboard in recent years.

What type of blogging investment can I make to maximize the disagreement and controversy in this blog? The most insulting lines have already been taken and it should be duly noted that they seem to be ineffective. I would like to post the most virulent invectives but I’m afraid they wouldn’t work either. It seems that the individuals on this blog are far too intelligent to permit a few slanderous and acerbic comments to intefere with their sports opinions. This is rather annoying and it disappoints me to know that even if I should exhaust my impressive lexicon of the most guttersnipe remarks and offer the most outrageous lies that I can’t get even the slightest nibble from an ignorant blogger. If all of you bloggers who post on this sight are going to ignore all the negative, nasty, and outrageous insults and lies, then I’m going to take my insults and lies elsewhere. Now,,,for the last time, here they are: Georgia is an over-rated, over-hyped, very average SEC team that might win 8 games if they, indeed are very lucky. The Dawgs win games by the grotesque benefit of sheer luck and undeniable help from sypathetic officiating crews. (They need all the sympathy they can get) UGA fans always proclaim that they have ‘All World’ players, but never get ‘All World’ results. One would have to wonder why this is necessarily so. Georgia players never play with the mental discipline and intelligence that real championship teams must have. They surely must be dead last including all NCAA football divisions in this area. UGA fans perpetually bemoan the amount of media coverage and attention they receive. All reasonable people know that they get entirely too much. The media usualy give in offer a few undeserved kudos to the Bulldog nation only for the purpose of silencing their obnoxious and uninformed fan base. Georgia fans will want to remain the top team in college football even after the Alabama Crimson tide soundly defeats them in Athens this weekend. A sound defeat has never stopped these obnoxious fans from continuing to insist on being #1. Even four defeats is not going to stop them from insisting on being #1. After the season is over and UGA is 8-4 and after they have lost their non- BCS bowl game, they still will want the nation to deem them national champions. If they would all send me a self-addressed stamped envelope, I promise to mail each of them a nice Certificate of Accomplishment using photo shop with a picture of a crystal football and a gold star to go along. Now I’ll wait and see if some fresh, original venomous insults worthy of my attention can now be posted. Given the serious absence of imagination and originality in this blog, I am resigned to believe that my hopes are for naught. Did anyone note the impressive manner in which GATech soundly and utterly bested MSU, a great big ole SEC team?

Predictions: Georgia will accumulate on ly 220 yards of total offense on the evening, Matthew Stafford will throw five interceptions against Bama. UGA will have 200 yards of penalties. Knowshon Moreno will fumble the ball three times, Matthew Stafford will be sacked 7 times, Georgia will lose three more starters to injuries, Blair Walsh will miss 4 field goals, the black jerseys will make the Alabama team outrageously inspired, the Georgia defensive coaches will be fighting before halftime; Alabama will accumulate over 500 yards total offense. Alabama’s QBs will throw 5 TDs, Julio Jones will catch four of them. Julio Jones will have 250 yards of receptions. Nick Saban will be smiling before halftime! Georgia will be ranked 14 while Alabama will be ranked #4 the following week.

Total penalty yards are not as bad as they appear. Several of you have stated that well. When we had 55yds in penalties the first half, only 5 looked legit to me. The Dawgs are flagged on close plays and phantom plays for the second game in a row when they are playing their hearts out. We can say it is unfortunate and look forward to the odds making the flags even out in the future. Miami got a “bad boy” rep and still has flags thrown unevenly against them when they play as evidenced by last week’s game. We need to look closely to determine if that may be getting into ref’s heads concerning our team. There were too many out-of-bounds hits that were not called against our opponents to suit me.
Some UGA fans don’t seem to take other teams seriously when our D plays against good QBs. Good D has kept QBs from reaching their marks enough times that, overall and without the trashy flags, the D would look great. I believe they are good enough to have been a big factor in our wins, especially against good QBs. Like BuLLdawg I don’t believe JP Wilson is very good, certainly not as good as 2 QBs we have defeated(CMU&ASU)and he may not be as good as Smelley. Just like the ASU game, the next defense will not look the same against Bama by a long shot and I do think we are getting closer to gel time. Hope it’s not like the last game with Bama in Sanford where the camera panned on Croyle with his arm in a sling standing next to the second stringer with the opposite arm in a sling and their 3rd stringer slow to rise from a tackle. Course, it could happen again.
thefuture-Your team(Vandy) and your coach have enjoyed much respect from this Dawg. If you had read several blogs over the last month you would have seen practically the entire SEC defend you from ignorant hacks in the media. Your team and GT are shaped to be serious opponents this year. Good luck with the media and the polls. The higher you are ranked before we meet you, the better.
No! Don’t bring Gameday here this weekend. We are not interested in their thinking or comments. They are a poor excuse for sports journalists and bait UGA fans every chance they get. Where is your pride in our University? How many insults does it take for every Dawg fan to catch on? They (ESPN) should not be allowed on our campus. They deride the fans, the team, individual players and have stated our Coach is “pimping” players. You would have them on our campus after their derisive comments? I’m blogging the Red and Black and sending an e-mail to Adams to not allow them on our space. We don’t need the type of “publicity” that they put out.

I used to pull for Tennessee except when they played GA, when Johnny Majors was your coach. He was a gentleman, other than the drinking, and had class. But it seems that Fulmer isn’t as good a coach without Cutcliffe which should tell the powers that be at UT that they should fire Fulmer and hire Cutcliffe.
Now as for the Dawgs and Bama next Saturday, I expect a hard fought game and that the Dawgs will continue to improve and to win in a close game. Some of this smack talking does get a little over the top though.

But please don’t tell any of them that I said so, because these psychos can be dangerous. I am in the phone book in Athens Ga, and if any one of you honkey Bama Ramas say another unkind word about my beloved Casey-Tiffany and her New Look surgery, you will have to answer to me, and I am big, 5ft7 and 155 lbs..Have been working out to gain all that extra muscle too…, Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

If YOU will remember, they had the ball 5 times before they scored. Is that when the “cushion” just appeared?
Or is it more likely that we played pretty conservative coverage, not letting a good passing team to rattle off big gains, very successfully, till they finally adjusted thier plays, and then we adjusted to that?
Your third party declaration of your own ball acumen aside, I am going to go with the proven professionals on this one.

I’m an ASU fan and was at the game. The complaining from your fans about the refs were way out of line. It wasn’t that bad. There is no way UGA can beat USC.

Ok man, you have some points “ideally”. Seriously, have you watched all the games man? When the WR’s have a cushion they move the ball everytime. Its rediculous. If they would just close the gap, they would not get squat. I mean , I see what your saying, and it sounds ok. But when we play the tougher SEC teams ( like this wkend ), if we do it they will dink and dunk all day. (Maybe not with John Parker Wilson though) Hehe

Good game UGA. You did what you had to do.
I think you played about the game I expected. I figured it would be closer, ASU didn’t play as well as I expected. Maybe their RB would have helped, but UGA would still have won.

I guess I am of the conclusion that you simply cannot shut down every last aspect of another team, and we have played a couple of pretty good QBs. Maybe they do move the ball more if we drop back, but that doesnt mean you just dont ever give a cushion and there is no risk to that. SC only score was when we got beat deep. WM knows his player’s capabilities too.
I should have been more specific, in that WM has said on many occations, that all he worries about is points, not yards, not who did what. 17 in 2 games is pretty good.
Besides how can you doubt me? AltamahaDawg knows Black Outs. called it two weeks ago. Where the hell did you get $60 tickets?

The AU-LSU game was typical SEC. The competition in this conference is akin to a BCS Bowl every week. Greatest training ground in America for the NC.
UgaVII-You nasty Dawg. We heard about Mill Ave in Tempe you used as your personal toilet. Hold up on that this weekend because the Bama players will want to kiss your a* after the game. Oh well, the taste in their mouth after the game won’t be any different, so go ahead.

60$ Jerseys. 60$ tickets, i wish. I guess maybe its to do with, like you said our players strong points. I am of the belief that our DB’s are more physical that adept at good pass protection. (Especially #3 Brian Evans. It seems he gets picked on alot). Great debate AltamahaDawg. good stuff man

Bama game great for a blackout. Baylie and I will be wearing our black cheering on our Dawgs.
Still 4-0, getting ready to get in overdrive. I’ll take a matchup between Stafford and Wilson any day. Looking forward to another great game Saturday night. I gotta work on Saturday so I will miss game day from Athens. Oh the inhumanity. Here is hoping Courso puts on the Pachyderm head.

I think Evans is more physically able to tackle than he is an excellence cover guy too. Wouldnt that be a reason to play back and give the short stuff?
I misread that price tag, funny. Yea that’s about right, 200 for the ticket. I decided a long time ago that if you wanted to go to the big games, and I only get to go to a couple of them a year..you just have to pay the man and shut up.

Still may be able to swing a couple of tickets for the JAX game through the company. If so, I’ll take a few days off and meet up on the island.

Now let the battle be joined!! …23-4…that’s the record of the teams we have left on the schedule. For all of the hoopla about dropping in the polls ..running the tables should make it to the NC game(1loss too for that matter)A couple of thoughts heading into Bama at home. 1.The offense is coming together-AJ made claim to back up his pedigree as a top 10 player coming out of HS..we all saw the talent..Now it’s time to feed him some touches.his rise will have ripple effects on the offense With two big play threats running down field; it opens up the underneath routes for the other WR’S and TE.Im looking for more RB’S out in the flats..I like our chances with Moreno and King 1on1 with linebackers in space.I think King is the clear no 2 at tailback. The kid just seems to bring a little more to the field than young Samuel.Moreno and King in the backfield together has some serious potential.Skill positions are definitely our strong suit .The OL will improve as the season progresses.I know ASU may not be a SEC level defenses but in case you missed it..the two freshman( Anderson and Jones) played pretty well.It is somewhat amazing that we have relied on true freshman and 1st year players on the line in the last two years and still been able to win 11 straight games. The future is bright there with everybody coming back battle tested plus Sturdivant. Looking ahead I see the sched shaping up this way. FLA and ALA are the teams with enough fire power at offense to put up 3 plus touchdowns on our D.The flip side to that is we match up well against their D and I see two high scoring affairs but we a little more juice on offense.Ten,Vandy,Kentucky.Ga tech all these teams have some players but overall we have too much well coached talent to lose these games. You don’t win 11 straight not being able to coach..the bigger point being ..these teams need to run the ball to be effective..that is the strength of our defense.the DT and LB play is stout against the run.The final margins may vary some scores higher or lower than expected but we should win those games. LSU and AUB present the most difficult challenges for different reasons 1.LSU is great on defense and special teams. They have the edge on the DL and some good cover guys.Enough cant be said that they are the defending NC playing at home and by the time we get there they will haved played FLA and either they are a sky high 6-0 or looking to get back into the top 10 with a win over UGA.2.AUB-also great on special teams and defense but the thing that nags me the most is the HISTORY my family are generations of dawg fans and the no 1 most respected rival has to be the plainsmen.Throw out the record, how teams are playing, match ups what not THAT game is the one that makes me nervous.ALL in all I haven’t seen anything to scare me with the up coming teams if we can stay healthy I like our chances with EVERYBODY.

Stafford is going to show Wilson what an NFL caliber QB looks like,Moreno is going to show BAMA’s second string running backs what an NFL caliber running back looks like, and A.J. Green is going to show Julio Jones who the top wide receiver really was coming out of high school.

I[m the biggest GA fan there is. But I don’t think GA has played a “complete” game as of yet. Not like they did at the close of last year. THe offense goes in spurts and at times looks as if it could dominate until a penalty or a poor pitch to the tail-back or a dropped pass.
I question this teams desire to grind it out on offense.(Mike Bobo) I questioned the way Ga came out last year and tried to go deep right away on South Carolina instead of playing physical and runninig the ball. The same thing happened again this year in Columbia and again last night. A bomb to start and then 2 poor shorter routes. Three and done. THat won’t work against Alabama, If this team shows it has no desire to get in a war, and tries to finesse Alabama it will be a mistake.
THey need to bring the intimidation factor up a notch like we did against Florida last year, they totaly caught Fla. off gaurd with their intensity level, It wasn’nt the same ole laid back Mark Richt team of previous years. They were jacked up like a Miami team, ready to do battle.

Southern California’s all known opponents, are 17 Wins and 19 Losses on the season.
That’s SoS Number 62.
UGA’s all known opponents are 24-8, the toughest SoS in the nation still this morning.
Georgia Tech’s is worse than Southern California.
So is Notre Dame’s worse than Southern California; but, there are no other teams you have ever heard of who in fact have an easier SoS than Southern California.
Would someone tell Chipper Towers that there have been 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, and have been for years ?
Both Georgia and Florida jumped Oklahoma in the BCS Rankings today.
Arizona State dropped to Number 37 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. This is because Arizona State ended up being the highest ranked football opponent Southern California beat all last year, including their bowl opponent. Arizona State is after all the 2nd best Pacific-10 team in football.
I didn’t read yet where Arizona State’s smack-talking QB took it all back that he said about football players pre-game. He talked smack about how much better he is than our players, and pointed out he is better than Matthew Stafford, too. Then, he was blown out by UGA, who just look like some guys wearing a uniform to him.
Alabama fans confirm to me tonight that indeed John Parker Wilson is a senior and this his last season. His passing offense is No. 105 of 120 teams. He had a grand total of 73 yards passing against Tulane. And, this past weekend had 74 yards passing against Arkansas.
Alabama QB Wilson has rushed the football 14 times for 11 yards total. Which gives him 542 yards of total offense as a Quarterback. Amazing. That has to be the worst in the nation. His back-up quarterbacks are Greg McElroy and Nick Fanuzzi.
I guess signing a quarterback over there in Alabama is pretty difficult with Coach Richt signing them all over here, instead.
We beat him in 2006 and 2007. Now, in 2008, we face off again. Excuse me, if I am not impressed. John Parker Wilson has never beat UGA.
Terry Grant, is he injured again at running back ?
Alabama, of course, is atop The SEC West standings, but then again Alabama has not played their only 3 football games this season yet. Now, have they ? LSU, Auburn and Georgia are Alabama’s entire season.

John Parker Wilson, The SEC’s 2nd Most Wins Active Starting Quarterbacks, is only 17-13 as a Starter. He just hasn’t done anything.
7:45 p.m. Saturday night with ESPN Game-Day on hand ‘Tween The Hedges.
There are 8 SEC teams with votes in the latest AP Poll this morning. The vols are not 1 of them.
Alabama is the 4th best SEC team in both the AP Poll and in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. UGA is the top SEC team in both polls.
The SEC has 6 teams ranked in the Top 25 of both polls. The Pacific-10 has 1. The ACC has 2.
John Parker Wilson has already set the all-time Alabama passing touchdown record, 42.
UGA leads The SEC in Rushing Touchdowns with 11 and Knowshon Moreno has 9 of those. Alabama has not given up a rushing TD all season long. Something has to give, and it will not be Knowshon Moreno.
While these match-ups do not favor Alabama, one that does is penalties with Alabama leading The SEC with the fewest and UGA leading The SEC with the Most.
17-13 John Parker Wilson, Senior Starting Quarterback. Nice. And, of the 17 wins as Alabama’s starting quarterback, 0 are against UGA. 17-14 most TD passes in Alabama history, but he will have a similar record against UGA as he has had against every other football team.
25-35-4 is one of the best series records Alabama has faced of all of its opponents, ever.
A win Saturday night will get it to single-digits.
In the past 11 years in a row UGA has been ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25, Alabama has not beat UGA 1 time.
Knowshon Moreno will rush for 2 TD and Matthew Stafford will throw for 2 TD, while Alabama determines it cannot run the ball against UGA, leaving John Parker Wilson to have to pass, which is not what Alabama does with John Parker Wilson.

Congrats to Georgia. As an ASU season ticket holder for 20 years, I was very impressed with how classy and knowledgeable the Georgia fans are. They’re better than LSU fans and on the same level as Nebraska. Georgia has superior talent and played a better game. When that happens, it’s best to just tip your hat to the better team and move on to next week. However, I do have 1 issue with the coaching. I thought it was classless to run 3 consecutive plays inside the 3 yardline as time was expiring with a 17 point lead. Taking a knee is the only appropriate thing to do. I understand “style points” and the polls. I also understand karma and I hope it doesn’t bite the Dogs at LSU or Auburn.

Ray,
Good post and appreciate the kind words about our program and fans.
On the running plays at the goal line at the end of the game, your opinion is what it is, but I don’t think Richt has much choice in trying to score there.
Remember, this guy’s team started the year #1 and has dropped a place in the polls after each and every win??? The explanation? Your team doesn’t beat teams badly enough ad we are going to punish you for it.
UGA did not throw a pass on the last drive and in my mind, kneeling down at the 2 yard line against ASU would have been at least as humiliating as punching it in to score 34.
