UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Dogs need to make a statement

Phoenix — “Devils look to attack suspect Georgia line.”

That was the headline stripped across the top of the sports page in the Arizona Republic newspaper on Thursday. If that doesn’t fire up and motivate the Bulldogs I don’t know what what will.

And the Bulldogs definitely need to be fired up. They need to be supremely motivated. They need to play great. They’ll need to in order to handle the competition and they’ll need to to do what they need to do, which is to play impressively.

Arizona State has had this game circled every since it was scheduled years ago. I’m telling you the whole Valley out here is buzzing about the game. Yes, the Sun Devils lost to UNLV, but that was primarily because it was looking ahead to Saturday’s matchup with the Dogs. The fans really want to see their team take down a Top 3 team.

And based on my interactions, many believe ASU will do it. I’ll say this: Everybody seems to know the Dogs through and through. They’ll say things like “don’t y’all have some issues on the offensive line?” and “You better figure out a way to get some pressure on Rudy [Carpenter] or he’ll light you up.” So they’ve definitely been paying attention.

No, the Bulldogs need to come in here and play like the team everybody thought should be ranked No. 1 in the preseason. They need to bully. They need to impress the pollsters and re-appeal to all those people that at one time voted them No. 1. They need to make a statement.

But can they?

Your morning links …

Carpenter: Dogs ‘just guys in uniforms’

You get a pretty good glimpse inside the personality of ASU quarterback Rudy Carpenter in Ted Miller’s blog at ESPN.com. Carpenter told Miller Georgia didn’t look on film any faster or bigger than other teams the Sun Devils play, “they looked like guys in uniforms.” He also said he didn’t “get any juice” from knowing Matthew Stafford is a top-rated quarterback. The kid’s pretty intense. See for yourself… .

Gators get Vols online

Seems some Florida fans got hold of the Wikipedia page for “Tennessee football” and had some fun with it. It’s been fixed now but thewizofodds.com has a screen capture on its webpage. Warning for vulgarity… .

Georgia on ESPN’s mind

ESPN Gameday planned to be in Tempe for the Arizona State-Georgia game until the Sun Devils bit it last Saturday against UNLV. Now, of course, they’re at LSU-Auburn on The Plains. But ESPN’s Chris Fowler hints in his weekly column that they’ll be in Athens next for Georgia-Alabama. That is, of course, if the Bulldogs take care of business this weekend.

UGA can’t make a statement with this game.

They win big, and they blowout a bad team who recently lost to UNLV as well.

They win close, well they play down to their competition, not a good quality.

They lose, well, they lost.

Lose, tie at best type of game for UGA in terms of how it will appear to the media.

Kinda sad.

They’ve already made a statement. They are not as good as the hype would have had us believe. That fast closing domination last year was a joke. Georgia Tech should have beaten them. Tech left 28 points laying on the field in that game. The defense is middle of the road at best, the offensive line is young and making mistakes, the one strong thing about the Dawgs is Knowshon Moreneo. He is the real deal and can flat out get it done. The QB is good but not great. He’s really kinda middle of the road just like the defense. He throws a nice rope, he just doesn’t know where the rope is going and that is a problemo. These dawgs should beat ASU handily, then the real season starts. It’s gonna be fun watching the Nation of Dawgs turn on Mark Richt when this thing blows up in a few weeks.

Couldn’t have said it any better myself - which I hate to say - since I really, really, REALLY want the Dawgs to make a positive statement and beat the snot out of everybody they play!

UGA is not coming close to living up to its standing (and the corresponding hype). But for a couple of stupid mistakes, the Gamecocks would have slaughtered them last week. Mark is going to be run out of town on a rail before the end of the season.

It would be a statement will ESPN —Musberger & Herbsteit. If they get the offense cranked up with Moreno getting 150 or so and at least a 2+ td win it will be a statement. GA can out score if we protect alittle and don’t make the drops we had last week.

The difference in this game is that Mr. Carpenter has not seen a real defense yet. ASU has beaten N. Arizona and Stanford. They lost to UNLV. By the way, UNLV had more 1st downs and virtually the same total yds of offense as the vaunted Sun Devils. And, oh yeah, Carpenter has thrown 3 interceptions this year to Stafford’s zero.

ASU is one demensional on offense. We know what they are going to do on most every play. Georgia, on the other hand can run, run, run, and the kill you with the play action.

The keys to this game for the Dawgs are:

Minimum of 4 sacks +2 in turnovers Less than 50 yds in penalties

If we do that, we win. I predict Dawgs 38, ASU 21.

When Texas won the national championship in 2005, they had to come back and beat OKST when down by 28. They were close on some other conference games and did not peak until the right time. So don’t over-react to the SC game. They are not jelling yet. But they need to hit their stride soon. The Arizona St. game will be close too. So what if they win? A win is a win and USC has a patsy schedule, so don’t believe the hype about USC. The media loves USC and Ohio state, but winning solves all the BS for the BCS.

Chip, If you want to be #1 you better play like #1. There should be no fretting about ASU or anybody else for that matter. You better have the confidence and swagger that you will win every game and dominate your opponent. Some how Columbia tends to suck that out of the Dawgs every other year. Rudy might be comparable to Ainge in his efficiency so they better look out and adapt the D if needed. Maybe he is comparable to Brennan? That would be good. I don’t know what kind of running game ASU has other than there #1 RB might be out? Anybody got info on that?

Atlanta Gator, just like SC knew it would be there bowl game and BCS NC game. That’s as close to #3 that SC will ever get. Playing on the same field. Where are the Gamecock fans anyway?

Longhorn fan, I appreciate that sage advice. It’s always nice to have the perspective of someone who’s “been there, done that” so to speak.

Chip and other loyal bloggers…give me your take on this opening speech by CMR (my version of course).

We’ve just recieved the opening kickoff. Touch back. Ball on the 20. TV timeout. As the team huddles around CMR before running onto the field, he says this “Men, this is SEC football. See the 20,000 red shirts in this stadium? It’s practically a home game. So, we’re going to show them SEC football at it’s best. I’m throwing out the first drive game-plan. We are not going to pass the ball 1 time. We are going to line up, hit them in the mouth, and run Knowshon 15 straight times all the way down to the goal line. If you don’t like this or aren’t up for the challenge, sit your butt on the bench. Otherwise, get your mind right and that we have 1 objective right now…punish the guy lined up in front of you. PERIOD.

Now that, men, would send a message to all…to the Dawgs, the the Devils, to the pollsters, everyone!

GO DAWGS….EARN IT!!!

Jferg, I agree. We need to play an old style Dooley game and give the rock to Knowshon 30 times. We contol the clock and keep Carpenter off the field.

By uga_b

September 19, 2008 9:44 AM | Link to this

I agree that the main form of “domination” I would like to see is time of Possession: 35;25 or preferably 40;20. I think we need to keep Rudy off the field as much as possible and try to bury him into it whenever he steps on. I don’t care if we win by a field goal or a TD if we control the ball, fly around on defense, hit them in the mouth, and get some d@%$ pressure on Carpenter. You can dominate without running up the score… at least on this coast.

I would love to “hang it on them” so to speak, but let’s get the W and bring it back home.

jfergNCdawg, good take. Smash mouth it down the field on the first drive. No passes, let Moreno and the RB’s pound the rock on the first drive. Maybe that would wake up the O-line and get them into game. We can’t forget though that Searles is one hell of coach and that O-line maybe shuffled around but I think it will do a fine job.

Alta~Dawg——The Gamecock fans are cooked and done, as far as UGA is concerned. Don’t worry, though, the Evil Genius will have them plenty motivated for their annual match against the Gators, and USC will still win a couple against the SEC big boys.

Here are the facts….The dawgs offense will overwhelm the sun devil defense. They are no south carolina. We will be able to either run or pass on them fairly easily.(maybe both) If we avoid untimely turnovers and penalties we will score a lot of points in this game.

I see the sun devil offense as being a lot like central michigan’s. Good qb that likes to throw the ball. We will shut down what little running game they have and force them to pass. They will get some yards…score some points, but in the process, they will have a couple of turnovers that will lead to some more UGA points.

The media acts like Georgia owes them some debt for voting them #1 in the preseason. Get over yourselves!!! Georgia does not owe you anything. Their goal is not to impress you. Newsflash to the media: You are not that important. The games are what’s important. Their goal is to win the game. This is not a beauty contest. Well, maybe it is, but it shouldn’t be. This is football.

I have never seen a team take this much crap for one close game in my entire life. Its as if the media wants them to fail. Am I whining? You’re damn right I’m whining. Deal with it. This is a joke.

It’s all about Defense. We have to get a pass rush going. Our offense will get it going. South Carolina’s defense is a very good defense so I don’t worry about only scoring 14. A win is a win.

If we have a consistant pass rush and hurry their QB we win big. If not, it’s a very close game. GO DAWGS!!

Actually, the Valley isn’t really buzzing about this game. If anything, the Valley is focused on (1) whether our D’Backs can pull out of their tail-spin with enough time to make the NL West a competitive race and (2) the Cardinals being 2-0 for the first time in 15 years. No one but the relatively few ASU alums dotting the Valley really cares about the Sun Devils or the Bull Dogs. Make it the center of your universe if you want, but it isn’t here. By the way, your grammar is horrible and no one here says “ya’ll.”

I think the SC-TN game is going to be interesting. The SC-FL game is still just bizarre to me, given the OBC angle.

All these people sayin that CMR will be run outta town have lost your minds!! CMR is the savior of our Bulldogs! Since 2001 he has never had a losing record, only twice losing less than 10 games (2001:8-4, 2006:9-4) brought our DAWGS to a bowl game every one of those years! Also in 7 years at Georgia, Richt has won 2 SEC titles and played in the SEC Championship Game 4 times and has put up an amazing .791 winner percentage in the toughest conference in college football! So I dont know about the rest of you, but I hope CMR sticks around for the long haul! Its gonna take alot more than one disappointing season (this not being that season) to run him outta town! Georgia will win confortably. But right now the Dogs aren’t playing nearly well enough to get to the SEC Championship game, much less the National Championship. The way they are playing, they could easily lose to Alabama, Florida and LSU, and struggle w/ Auburn and Tennessee. Maybe this is the week they turn it up.

Take heart Georgia fans. From ESPN.com:

“Georgia is the fourth team in the last 25 years to be ranked No. 1 in the AP poll and then fall as far as third without losing or tying a game. The other three to do it — Oklahoma in ‘85 and Nebraska in ‘94 and ‘97 — all went on to win the national title (in ‘97, Nebraska won the coaches’ poll title but not AP’s).”

Hmmm…

“But right now the Dogs aren’t playing nearly well enough to get to the SEC Championship game”

Why? Because they “only” beat South Carolina by a touchdown? The past three SEC East champions have ONLY beaten South Carolina by a combined 6 points. So I guess scrapping by the Gamecocks is enough to get it done after all.

I think Tennessee has a chance because Florida has not been very impressive on the road under Urban Meyer. He is only 7-5 on the road, with Kentucky, Vandy, and Ole Miss accounting for most of the wins. And Florida had to fight like mad even to win those games. His performance on the road against the SEC heavyweights has been nothing short of pathetic. The one and only worthwhile road win of the Urban Meyer era was a one point victory over Tennessee in 2006. He’s a big O-fer at LSU. Lost at Auburn. Lost at South Carolina. Got drilled at Alabama.

The point is, Florida is very ordinary on the road. I think the noise and atmosphere disrupts their offense. Tennessee needs to get loud and stay loud. This will be a very close game in my opinion.

Don’t you people who are criticizing the Dogs play realize how ridiculous you sound?? Hello, we’re only 3 games into the season. Like it or not, nobody is going to blow out USC because of the style they play. They make it an ugly game. The first two games we blew out Ga. Southern and Cent. Mich. early and had reserves playing late in the game. CMR isn’t going to kick a FG late to rub it in, ala Urban Meyer, since he’s got a thing called class. Anyway, people just settle down. The SEC will sort itself out. I just worry if USC and the Big12 champ finishes undefeated, or w/ one loss, would both get selected over the SEC champ w/ one or even two defeats? But that will take care of itself as well.

An update from out here in Phoenix..just rode through the ASU campus with my Georgia car flags a flappin’ and got some honks ( even passed a car with a couple of Arizona Wildcats waving and saying beat the Devils ) and a couple of pitchfork gestures..also passed quite a few other cars with the Georgia car flags a flappin’ … point is..its is a GEORGIA invasion here in the desert .. had lunch at In-n-out burgers and mostly red and black dressed fans in the joint.. had to laugh at the sportstalk radio this afternoon saying it was gonna be pac-10 offense vs. SEC defense..I laugh because our headliners are on the offensive side of the ball!..I see the game shaping up as our depth ( particularly King and Samuel ) simply overwhelming their depth.. Looks as if their best tailback ( K. Herring) wont play so I DEFINTELY dont think they will have ANY success running the ball ..so with that said..we need to send more than they can block..especially on 1st downs and not give Carpenter time to establish a rhythm..make them trade their fieldgoals(they have the nation’s best kicker) to our touchdowns! Gang tackle..and DEFINITELY cut down on the stupid penalties! oh..and as for the heat.. its tolerable..its hot but it doesn’t stick to ya..unlike back home where 80 degrees feels like 100 so I dont think we will have a problem with the heat..rotating guys early and often and by the 2nd half we should roll! Go Dawgs!

Sooo many questions about this team:

*Will they put pressure on the ASU passing game?

*Will they execute in the heat and noise?

*Is it in their nature to show off for a national audience?

*Was last week a step in a process of growth or a revelation that this team is not ready for the national stage?

One thing is certain: we will know a lot more about whether they were overrated after this week and next. I think they will rise to the occasion, but I thought they would crush the Gamecocks last week. I do not like a second game on the road against another team that underperformed the week before. ASU will be pi$$ed, just like South Carolina was last Saturday. If the Dawgs do play to potential under the heat of such a spotlight, then everybody better watch out. Remember the steam rolling machine that they were at the end of last year? We have not seen a team this year of that quality… not yet!

JUST BACK FROM TEMPE AND THE ARIZONA STATE CAMPUS

Wow. It is beautiful and it is hot over in Tempe.

I’m staying in Phoenix, not far from the airport in the southeast area of downtown. Tempe, where ASU is located, is short drive to the east.

The main restaurant and entertainment area is known as the Mill Avenue District. The campus and the stadium are just a couple of blocks away. It’s a beautiful and very different scene over there. Palm trees, 30 feet high and taller, line many of the streets. Red rocks and sage covered hills pop up throughout the landscape and form a backdrop for the campus and the city of Tempe. A bright yellow “A” adorns the top of one of the tallest hills next to the stadium and I’m sure it will get some airtime tomorrow.

The Mill Avenue area is great. It’s kind of like Bourbon Street in New Orleans, only cleaner and with a lot of automobile traffic. It’s bumper-to-bumper all day and all night to get through there. As an alternative for getting around is what they call their “light rail system,” which are some very modern cable cars that run east-west along north of the entertainment district and out to the stadium.

Georgia fans are everywhere! As early as 1 p.m. local time you could hear Georgia chants, people barking and horns that play the fight song going off all over the area. The Arizona Republic estimates that 25,000 UGA fans are in the city this weekend and will be at the game Saturday night. But it’s going to be hard to get an official number since so many of them got tickets through brokers and by buying up some of Arizona State’s allotment. The fans seem to be treating this trip like a bowl game. Even early in the afternoon many were throwing back beers and more than a few sipping on the famous magaritas at Z Tejas. They brag that their magaritas have one-tenth a percent below the legal limit of tequila in them. Should be interesting to see how these folks are when I head back down their tonight to have dinner.

It’s 100 degrees today but, as has been said so often this week, it’s not as unbearable as you might think. If you sit still in the sun or, gosh forbid, try to lay out in it next to a pool, it feels like you might burst into flames any second. Otherwise there’s a light breeze and it’s not bad at all in the shade. Most of the restaurants around Mill Avenue have outside patio seating but they have these misting cooling systems that project a fine mist out at the edge of the awnings. So when you’re walking down the sidewalks you often get a little blast of that to one side.

On the other hand, the temperatures here plummet at night. It’s positively cold if you remain out for an extended period well after dark. Several folks had on long-sleeve shirts or light jackets last night. I had on cargo shorts last night but I think I’m going to rock the Levis this evening.

That’s about it. I’ll be blogging before, during and after tomorrow night’s game as always. So those of you that weren’t fortunate enough to make it out here count on me to try let you know what it’s like in and around the stadium. The game will of course be televised on ABC and kickoff is scheduled at 8:13 p.m. EST. That’s 5:13 local, so it will be very hot to start and cool off fast.

Until then I’ll try to answer any questions you might have.

C-ya.

Tybee, don’t know if you’re still around, share your sentiments on Gators losing, however, best thing that could happen for the Dawgs would be for UF to come to Jax undefeated and run home with their gator tail clipped and jaws taped shut.

Off the subject, but while I was watching WVU-Colorado last night ESPN showed their player of the week, Michael Crabtree, in highlights from Texas Tech’s game against SMU. Rece Davis was talking him up from the studio when Chris Fowler said “Don’t show highlights of him against SMU.” Obviously that was a reference to their omission of Moreno’s hurdle in the Cent. Michigan game, and the asinine excuse they came up with. Looks like they won’t be forgetting that for a while.

You are right ridiculous how much ESPN overplayed Richts stance on that highlight. Time and time again they mocked Richt during college football live.

He was hunkered down scrubbing the whitewall tires as water was leaking around the nozzle where obiviously a rubber washer was missing. As he held to the fender well and pulled for additional levergein order to scrub even harder, he busted a dingy windy in his jeans and Gladys next door heard it. She died laughing and his face reddened with embarrassment. So he broke into her house the next day and popped mudd in her cornflakes. They plan to marry in the spring. ….Pewtus

There was Doy and Deyoob and then there wasn’t . Thats when they sent out Dutta-Dutta-Dutta out to seek it out. Steam arose from the balgum and folks could smell it. I drank dark liquor for a time till I could feel the sting of the spirit. The room began to spin and I felt a warm sensation run down my leg. I heard a distant wild ox fart and immediately began to eat pounds of corn bread real fast. I’ll see ya tomorrow and GO DAWGS!!!….Pewtus

What a slap in the face for Arkansas Chipper Towers, sir. Reading your latest oversight, one would conclude that Arkansas cannot play with Alabama. A miserable Arkansas team last year came within 3 in Tuscaloosa. And, Nick Saban’s Bama squad lost to far worse teams than Arkansas this year, last year when he lost to Louisiana-Monroe at home. Bama also lost to Auburn last year on the road, for the 6th consecutive season. Bama lost to Mississippi State on the road last year too. And, LSU and UGA both beat them too. Even FL beat Bama last season when FL lost in fact 4 of the 5 games they played against Final AP Poll Top 25 teams, which Bama was not. That’s 6 losses Chipper Towers, but Arkansas cannot play with Bama. B.S.

And, as for this further B.S. that UGA has to make a statement every week for you since we were preseason consensus No. 1 in the nation in 17 of 23 preseason polls, I have 2 comments.

1, you said Chipper Towers that UGA was NOT No. 1 but No. 3 because you looked at 6 of the 23 preseason polls and chose 6 that had Ohio State No. 1. Or, have you FORGOTTEN THAT TOO ?

2, UGA was when you wrote we were NOT No. 1, Number 1. Ohio State was not. And, the advantage of that is that there had to be some B.S. about how great Virginia is and how great Washington is. And, how not great South Carolina is when they will end the season 9-4, while Washington and Virginia will be combined 8-16.

UGA does NOT have to make any statement. We are No. 3. We play the No. 1 SoS. All we have to do is drive 2,050 miles to Tempe AZ and win the game against an over-matched football team.

I’m so tired of this, UGA does not impress you Chipper Towers. I’m impressed with the win over South Carolina. In time, you will come in here and say so too.

2-faced.

All we have to do this week, is win.

Oh, Lord, The Dawgs are No. 3 and cannot play in the mythical damn national championship game. You are so full of it. Can I say that ?

Every blog; it’s the same thing from Chipper Towers. UGA has to win big and put on a show for him. Not good enough to be No. 3 in the nation with games like this one to play for him to fly at my expense to Tempe AZ and watch us play a team that lost to Los Vegas last weekend. And, games like last week against Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina team who will end the season 9-4.

The single biggest reason why Washington and Virginia are determined to be so much better than South Carolina, is because of Chipper Towers daily saying this same B.S..

Dude, i really don’t get that perception from him. Well sometimes, but not as much as.. say Terence Moore. They just say things like that to get a reaction from bloggers and readers. Which they obviously do.. So lets just let the season play out. And if the Dawgs win out or even lose 1. With this schedule.. They should play in the Super Bowl man. Besides.. if you don’t calm down you’ll have a freakin’ stroke.. or blow an O ring or something….JK

The success or failure of this team rests in the hands of the Ga offensive line. An offensive line that SC basically mauled for 60 min last saturday.

Forget about coaching…S Teams….the Ga defense…Stafford or even Moreno.

If the offensive line does not block well enough…Ga will lose.

It’s get said a lot in The SEC because South Carolina is going to be 9-4 at the end of this season. They were consensus No. 24 already when Vanderbilt beat them. Vanderbilt is No. 26 in this week’s AP Poll, and with West Virginia’s loss, they are certainly in the Top 25. The SEC has 5 of the Top 10 today in the Polls. Arizona State certainly has not beat any team such as South Carolina. Washington and Virginia are certainly not as good as South Carolina, either. Or Vanderbilit, for that matter.

There has only been 1 team in the PAC-10.

It’s the same again this season.

Which is why the attendance records of the NCAA show The SEC with 3 million more fans at our games every season than PAC-10 games. We will be there tonight. We bought Arizona State season tickets to have tickets to this game. What ? That cost us $200 ? You cannot get season tickets to UGA without spending $10,751.

Our players may ” look like more than just guys in uniforms Rudy Carpenter. For a guy who hasn’t beat 1 single solitary football team to say that about UGA who beat 3 Final AP Poll Top 25 teams last season out of 4 games against The Final AP Poll Top 25 is just smack talk.

Do that before the game.

You will not be able to do so, after the game.

This State should really be called “Loserville”., our four Pro teams are an embarrassment, so we all hop on the UGA Loser-wagon, what you saw USC do to Ohio State will happen to us too, we are more like Ohio State than USC. So stop the nonsense about a National Championship, and play each game as if it was your NAMBLA Subscription.

Alabama will play 3 games all season long, and lose all 3 to UGA, LSU and Auburn - like they always do with John Parker Wilson.

I don’t see any predictions you made.

I predicted Vanderbilt would be ranked and play in its first bowl game in 24 years, Phillip Fulmer would be fired, Rudy Carpenter would not smack talk after the game about UGA just being guys in uniforms who don’t impress him, or how he thinks he is better than Matthew Stafford, that the Pacific-10 is but 1-team conference as now Oregon is beat by Boise State - an, unranked football team, that it would seem as though it were a home game for UGA with our fans the louder fans, that the vols would lose big, that John Parker Wilson nor Jonathan Crompton are any damn good as quarterbacks, that South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier would end up 9-4 this season, that South Carolina would be ranked No. 19 in the Final AP Poll this season, that Ohio State was not Number 1 in the nation when Chipper Towers said they were and that they would not be in the MNC Game, that the Big 10 would suck this season, that the PAC-10 would suck this season, that more people would watch UGA-South Carolina than they would Ohio State suckeyes against Southern California, that our Offensive Line would be 1 of our major strengths this season, that our Defense would be extremely good, that our Strength of Schedule would be the toughest of any BCS Bowl team this season again as it was last season, and that we would go 12-2.

Now, what was it that you predicted ?

Oh, yeah, that’s right…nothing.
