UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

Richt: Polls won’t change his style

I’m assuming that most of you out there were like me and not all that surprised that Georgia dropped yet again in the polls and now is No. 3. Tim Tucker, Jeff Schultz, Tony Barnhart and I were all talking about it as soon as we finished writing our stories after Saturday’s game in Columbia.

It’s just kind of the nature of the beast nowadays that pollsters treat their votes like a weekly beauty contest. Ralph Russo, who manages the Top 25 football poll for The Associated Press admitted as much.

Technically this latest setback does mean that Georgia could effectively be locked out of the BCS Championship game even if it escapes the regular season undefeated if Oklahoma and Southern Cal also remain unbeaten. But both Russo and coach Mark Richt were doubtful that could happen. As Richt said, he’s just trying to win the next game.

Anyway I wasn’t able to use most of what Richt had to say about it in my Sunday reportings so I’ll share the fully unabridged version of it with you here in Q&A form. As always, let me know what you think about it after you read through… .

Q: Were you surprised or disappointed that you dropped again?

Richt: “I’m really not worried about it. We can’t control it. We can control trying to win the Eastern Division, I said that way back. When you set goals you have to set goals you can control. That’s the only thing we can really control in this whole thing. You can control whatever game you’re playing. Like this week it’s a non-conference game. It doesn’t have anything to do with whether or not we win the East. But we want to win everygame we can and put ourselves in position to possibly be there in the end if we’re able to win the league. But so much time has to pass. So many games have to be played. We all know we have the type of schedule that will put us back in business if we’re able to take care of business. The question is, are we going to take care of business. But that’s everybody.

Q: Did you expect it?

Richt: “I’m not surprised that it could happen because you see that before. Everybody kind of wants to settle in and see where everybody thinks everybody belongs. It’s hard. Shoot, I’m a voter, too. It’s hard to know where to put everybody. You’ve got to play a few games. Once the games get started you get a little bit better taste but you still don’t know. You have people playing all over the place, different regions, different conferences. Some teams start with tougher opponents than others. It’s just very difficult to get a gauge on where everybody else is. Think about last year. How many Top 5 teams got beat last year? Everybody kept moving up by default.”

Q: Since the pollsters are so fickle, would you change your approach to games in which you’ve clearly gotten a team beaten in the fourth quarter? Would you leave in starters longer or kick an otherwise meaningless field goal?

Richt: I don’t think so. If it’s the 12th game of the year, maybe. But not before then.

Q: Are you concerned your players may feel the need to earn style points during games?

Richt: “They better worry about winning.”

Q: Has all the poll talk been a distraction in the locker room?

Richt: “It’s not been that bad in the locker room. It’s been harder outside the locker room with fans,” Richt said. “Like I told the team, the preseason polls are just kind of an arbitrary stab in the dark. As the season rolls on, everybody has a better idea who they want to vote for. There’s still an awful lot of football to be played. Our goal is just to continue to win.”

We should only worry about the next game- nothing more. If you overlook someone while looking ahead, your name could be Arizona State.

The polls are basically meaningless at this point of the season. As we all remember, LSU won the MNC last year with two losses. If not every team, than damn near every team will lose at some point this season. Georgia just needs to win and the polls will fall into place.

I am so disappointed in the way the Dawgs played Saturday. You have to say either SC is better than we thought or the Dawgs are not as good, I have to say it is the latter because SC sucks. When the Bulldogs play the real SEC teams, (Bama, Vols, LSU, Gators,) I am afraid that those teams will flat run over our defense. The Bulldog defense is just not very tough up front, including the ends. And with a student body of 40 thousand, don’t tell me they can’t find a soccer player out there that can’t kick the ball in to the end zone!!! That is there biggest weakness.

By drop in the polls?

glad we dropped just one spot, we looked like a #10 team not a number team, i love the dawgs but please..a.j. green was he playing hurt or did we just decide that he isn’t that good? throw the kid the ball , come on, he could play for the falcons, right now..looked like chan gailey trying to coach calvin johnson..don’t recruit him coach if your not going to get him the ball,, heck put him at tight end that guy, tripp chandler probably hasn’t ever even caught a cold

The polls are an interesting thing…

USC jumped UGA because of an impressing win over UVA. But… UConn just had a very impressive 45 pt victory over the same UVA. I say move UConn into the top ten.

But it really does not matter unless we keep winning.

The polls have been pretty fair to The Dawgs. Afterall, we were rated #1. The fact is that if Richt and asst coaches had not convinced them the game would be a close one, forcing the team to play too tight I believe we’d have won by another TD or two. Had that happened we’d still be #2.

I love The Dawgs and am proud of a tough fought win. But they were not prepped right for this game and the playcalling was often poor.

Hey, Dawgingatorville

Let’s see hpw this season progresses- I’ll bet you that SC wins some big games. The problem generally with our defense is the pass rush- QB HAS WAY TOO MUCH TIME. Hopefully guys will step forward as he season continues. More specifically in this game-there was mis-match with our LB’s having to cover their TE who is very talented- They were getting beat pretty bad-that’s why you had the holding calls- the LB’s were holding on for dear life.

I am very very satisfied with a WIN. We lost a close one last year, and I will take a “W” AT SC anytime.

ANOTHER SEC road win for CMR. Win, and take care of US, and everything will even out in the end.

Let’s see, 21pts to GA Southern, 17 pts to Cen Mich, and 7 pts on the ROAD in a SEC game. I think the defense did just fine.

Go dawgs

By is uconn #2

September 14, 2008 9:00 PM | Link to this

move uconn to number 2 and south fla. to # 3 , make the big east the conference to watch, lets have some fun with this, if cal defeats usc will that make maryland a higher ranked team than usc since mary and land beat cal, what about osu and michigan are they still in the top 100, will tech ever be in the top 100, is navy better without paul johnson, of course, they almost beat a powerful duke team, and surely north carolina is a top ten team they beat mighty rutgers, lets really spice the polls up, uga only beat steve spurrier, heck he can’t coach a lick can he. the polls will forever be an opinion and there is nothing we can do about it

By Supes

September 14, 2008 9:06 PM | Link to this

This was to be expected. USC (the real one!) should be number 1 as long as they don’t lose another game. They are 3 deep with talent in every position and flat out dominate.

UGA was exposed saturday against the chickens. I’m a die hard UGA fan, and I still have hope that they can run the table, but they need to correct all the mistakes, penalties and play calling. Then they need to correct the poor execution in game…how about catching the fraking ball?

Most alarming was how badly our D-Line was outplayed by an average South Carolina O-line. Couldn’t get any pressure rushing 4-down lineman. Only spells trouble. If UGA could only borrow Marcus S. and Richard S. for the season on the DT spots!

Arizona State will be a tough game if UGA plays anything like yesterday, however, they…The Sun Devils were also exposed against a mediocre UNLV team.

UGA should be able to ball control, pound the ball and control the game clock. Keep that Sun Devil offense and Rudy Carpenter on the sideline. Let’s hope our receivers step up and make plays…someone outside of AJ Green…and give Green the ball! Just give him the da*mn ball! Playmaker!

Go Dawgs, lets beat those Sun Devils.

Worry about the polls when we are in November!

defense was playing a terrible offense, we let them come down the field twice in the fourth quarter and they fumbled and then we intercepted..luck prevailed not our defense, fla will hang 40 on us if we don’t get drastically better…hopefully we will..maybe we could trade tripp chandler to florida and beg urban meyer to play him the entired game

Does anyone realize that Georgia just beat South Carolina. A South Carolina team that beat Georgia just a year ago in Athens. A georgia team that finished number 2 in the country last year. Is it that hard to forget that the SC game is always a close one. A SC game that in the last 5 years, the winner scores less than 20 points. Get over it, it is a win. Defense stepped up win they needed to. The dawgs are just fine!

I AM GETTING SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING CMR EXPLAIN AWAY THE DROP IN THE POLLS AS SOMETHING THE DAWGS CANT CONTROL….THEY CAN CONTROL IT…STOP WINNING GAMES WITH LESS THAN SPECTACULAR RESULTS. THE GA. SOUTHERN GAME CAUSED THEM A DROP IN POLL TO #2 BECAUSE THEY ALLOWED THE HIGHSCHOOL TEAM TO SCORE 21 POINTS ON THEM. AND WHILE THEY DID WELL AGAINT CMU, THEY BARELY BEAT SOUTH CAROLINA, AN UNRANKED TEAM THAT HAD JUST LOST TO VANDERBILT THE WEEK BEFORE. SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. WIN BIG LIKE USC AND OKLAHOMA AND YOU MOVE UP IN THE POLLS…GOOD GRIEF IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT OF A CONCEPT.

By diamond dawg

September 14, 2008 9:22 PM | Link to this

It’s really too early to be concerned about rankings. After the first 3 weeks, I personally don’t blame the voters. If they didn’t vote until after the first month we might start the season at #3 and probably deservingly so. A couple of thoughts though:

South Carolina isn’t that bad. For years losing to Vandy was a measuring stick as to how bad you were. Lose to Vandy and you must be a pretty bad team. Not so any more. Vandy is a good team that could have beaten UGA, Tennessee and did beat USC last year. For some reason the media has decided that USC falls into this category now and it shows their ignorance of the level of SEC football from top to bottom. I give respect to USC and Vandy and just glad we came out with a W.

Is Southern Cal really that good? UVA got blown out by UCONN and almost lost to Richmond. So that win is not looking so impressive. OSU played two pansies and struggled with a mid level MAC opponent the week before. So the OSU win isn’t that impressive to me…yet. I’d like to see how they fare the rest of the season.

The last thing I’ll take away from this weekend is the mind boggling love affair the media has with Beanie Wells. To me he was a good player on an over rated team last year. The media would have you think it was the equivalent of Tebow being out for the Gators or something. Good player, but come on. Enough already. They kept showing him on the sideline like he could have prevented the disaster that was about to ensue. I think I speak for everyone outside of Columbus when I say, thank God you got it over with now and spared us all another awful NC game…hopefully. Damn you BCS!

Auburn Miss State was worst SEC game I have seen in many years, Auburn scored 3 points on 316 total offense, penalize 8 times for holding, ( safety), two missed FG, fumble 3-4 times. The only ray of hope we have is our defensive unit, probably best in the nation(15 points),

Whatever. Obviously the polls have become a beauty contest. We hang 100+ on two teams and we drop. We go on the road in the SEC and win and we drop. OK beats three teams with a combined 2-6 record?! Isn’t this the same OK that has lost it’s last three bowl games (all of which they were favored in)? The SEC still gets no respect from outside the South!!! What does this conference have to do to prove that every weekend is darn tough in this league. There are no OFF Saturdays in this league!!! BTW-Vandy (the league patsy) is 3-0!! May I be the first to say screw USC( Southern Cal not, South Carolina although they suck too). Their schedule is a complete and utter joke, and to call them a dynasty is a slap in the face to every SEC National Championship team that played a tough schedule and won it all. That LSU team in 2003 would have destroyed USC in the National Title game if they got to play each other. And that Ohio State team would be a 7-5 or 6-6 team at best in the SEC. To call that a quality win is pathetic, OSU barely be Ohio for Christ sakes. Yeah UGA didn’t look great, but they play a tough schedule in a tough conference. If USC played UGA right now, yeah they might win, but it would be a 24-13 kind of game. But if USC would have played UGA in the Rose Bowl last year, the Dawgs would have won that one. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. I’ve learned two things from watching college football over the years: “Never say Never” and Never say ” I gurantee”.

First of all … only ONE of the THREE polls that are used in the BCS computation have been published. Who cares about the AP, as it means nothing. The Masters and Computer Polls don’t come out until next month. If we win our games … everything will take care of itself.

Also, look at the voting … we’re 30 votes behind Oklahoma. That is pretty insignificant. USC absolutely deserves to be #1 right now, so it’s really just a battle between us (not counting the other SEC schools b/c for it to even matter we have to beat them anyway) and the Big 12 Winner (Oklahoma / Missouri). The Not so Big 10 winner will NOT be playing for the Championship (Wisconsin is not that great and will lose).

the USC,oklahoma schedules are both a joke and they could very well go undefeated even though it will be tougher for sooners to do that.

the SEC champion will not go undefeated whoever it is.

Pete, the preseason polls gave us all who were dying for the season to begin, something to talk about. Most of us agreed, it was fun being preseason number one but that did not matter at the end of the season. Just easier to stay in the top ten if you are a preseason number one. I have no problem with USC west being number one, I have no problem being now number three. I just want to get to Atlanta, the rest will take care of itself. And if CMR gets a new SEC Champs flag over the stadium and no Crystal football, then I am satisfied with our season. If we get neither, well I am a fan still. Oh and I did attend UGA with a degree in 83. Is that good enough for you or do I need to prostate myself and repeat we are not worthy for your personal satisfaction. Arizona State stayed ranked No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

There are Five (5) SEC Teams ranked in the Top 10 of The BCS Poll today :

Georgia.

Florida.

LSU.

Alabama.

Auburn.

Georgia plays this season the Number 1 Toughest Official NCAA Strength of Schedule.

Georgia plays this season the Number 1 Toughest what used to be called the BCS Strength of Schedule, applying that formuula to this season.

Oklahoma has some football games, not like us, but they play what every year is ranked way up there Big XII opponents. Of course the Big XII has the worst record in bowl games, all-time. The Big XII has the worst record in BCS Bowl Games, all-time. The Big XII has the single worst record in the BCS Championship Game.

Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina is now 1-2. This is a wounded Duck. They play WOFFORD and UAB, while UGA goes and plays Coaches’ Poll No. 24 Arizona State and AP Poll No. 9 Alabama (Auburn is No. 10 in the AP Poll.) South Carolina then has Ole Miss and then Kentucky. It’s the last 5 games for South Carolina before they play a team who should beat them. So, it’s a 5-2 South Carolina who takes on LSU. Then, the vols who they should beat. 6-3. Then Arkansas, then Florida for Spurrier. 7-4. Then, Spurrier’s South Carolina faces the Climpson Farmers.

I believe South Carolina will be 9-4 at the end of the season, after their 5th bowl win ever in football total. 5.

Best of luck 9-4 South Carolina.

Georgia Tech dropped to Zero (0) Votes in the AP Poll. At this rate, Georgia Tech should end up having the score run up on them, and no one else Coach Richt plays this season. Or, did you miss that Tech fans that he said he would run up the score on Tech, but not another team ever.

Well guys - we gave it our best - and came up short!!

Congrats on beating us at Home!

I think that UGA is definately not the #2 or #3 in the country - I think it is way too early to have polls. You just never know how or if a team will imporve during a season.

Based on where we are right now in the season - UGA is probably 4th best team in the conference - FL/LSU/Bama in the top 3.

I think UGA will lose all three if they do not improve.

Something to think about… think to years past when USC and Ohio State have been #1, with the only thing need was a win to stay there. Remember close games with Notre Dame and Fresno St for USC? and how about close ones aginst Penn St and Michigan for OSU? South Carolina was ranked last week and still recieving votes now, so point being this is a popularity contest and will continue to be until something changes..

AZDawg5: USC has good coaches, you say they are brilliant… but isn’t this the same coaching staff that lost to Stanford last year in what is considered the biggest upset based on point spread in the modern era? Are you sure that they are brilliant? Carrol is one of 3 coaches to win more games than Richt in the same time frame. I think we have a fantastic coaching staff.

PACWIN: Big win for USC, but other than that… the Pac 10 may have suffered the most humiliating weekend for a conference over a football weekend in recent memory.

Washington gives up 55, AZ State lost to Frezno State (at least that was in OT), UCLA loses 59-0, OH THE HUMANITY! Cal lost to an absolutely terrible Maryland team. AZ lost to New Mexico, Stanford got crushed by TCU, Washington State got crushed by Baylor (this is not a misprint, Baylor crushed a team). Thank God that Oregon was able to win in OT against Purdue.

Can anyone imagine the SEC losing to New Mexico, TCU, Baylor, Purdue, Maryland, and Frezno State in the same weekend.

The conference should be banned from being part of the BCS and disbanded based on these results.

This is a feeble feeble conference.

Georgia fans and Bashers alike are talking about how bad UGA looked like in a win (is that 10 in a row for the Dawgs?) and certainly UGA looked bad offensively.

I thought Stafford, Moreno, and Green all had good games (not perfect). The two drive killing drops by Chandler, two near touchdown catches dropped, the unforgivable false start by C.Davis at the Gamecck 1 and the cut into traffic by teh freshman running back when he could have scored a touchdown just by plowing straight ahead… all cost the Dawgs points.

Did anyone bother to notice that 15th ranked ASU lost to UNLV this weekend? I think it is relevant because we play them in six days. ASU went 2 for 10 on 3rd and 4th down and barely outgained the running rebels offensively.

They don’t know then either. They put teams like Southern California who play no one up at the top. In fact, in many voters’ opinion, what you are asking them to vote on is not who is the most talented. Or, who has done the best. But, who do they think will end the season undefeated. They honestly, some of them, believe that an undefeated Ohio State is better than a SEC team with a loss.

How did Florida State get some votes by beating Western Carolina and Chattanooga, you ask ? Because, again, some of the voters think they are voting on who they think will have a good won/lost record this year. Florida State plays in fact Strength of Schedule No. 71 this season.

Western Carolina and Chattanooga are as good as the rest of the teams FSU plays this year. Colorado. Miami of Florida. NC State. Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech. Climpson Farmers. Boston College. Maryland who lost to Middle Tennessee. ACC Schedules are all a total joke.

And the PAC-10 is even worse.

Ohio State Suckeyes’ Senior Experienced Quarterback Todd Boeckman is 13-3 as the Starter. He has beat not 1 single team in the Top 20 of any football poll, ever.

In fact, Todd Boeckman has only played 1 Top 20 team before Saturday night and in that game he threw two (2) Interceptions and was blown out by LSU.

Southern California has won 8 straight against the Big 10. The SEC has Won 9 Consecutive Bowl Games against Ohio State alone.

There are now Five (5) SEC teams ranked ahead of Ohio State.

Where is the Ohio State fan, LOL.

Virginia, which was such a GREAT WIN by Southern California, just Lost to Connecticut 10-45 this week. Why doesn’t Southern California talk about that ?

Virginia’s only win is over Richmond Spiders, 16-0.

Washington State is No. 93 in the BCS Rankings today.

Washington is No. 88.

Oregon State is No. 84.

Stanford is No. 75.

UCLA is right there with them.

50 percent of the PAC-10 suck.

The other 50 percent, except Southern California, all had the worst weekend of their entire 30-year PAC1-10 history.

Oklahoma’s performance against Washington ?

South Carolina will end the season 9-4 and ranked about No. 19.

I thought it was pretty interesting that whenever Moreno was taking a breather Samuel was the 2nd back in. IF memory serves me correct it was well into the 3rd quarter that CK got a touch. That speaks volumes about where his progression is at. Also Moreno should have had ALOT more touches.

Second I thought we might blow them out, but thats why I am a fan and not a prognosticator. Tough win as usual a sloppy game on both sides.

At this point the voters polls do matter a little but its the computer polls that a huge. If we are undefeated win the first BCS polls come out it is a reseasonable opinion that we will be #2.

Good win, solid effort. As Ray Goff used to say, ALOT…we just gotta get better. Every week we gotta get better.

A win is a win! We needed this game in more ways than one. 1. It shows that we have areas to work on and they will work on them. 2. It shows that our team can step up in the 4th quarter and do what is needed to when a close SEC road game! 3. It also shows that any team can play with any other team when their backs are against the wall. South Carolina is not a bad football team neither are they that great, if they had an offense that was consistent they would be very good. Every National Champion has won but has also had some luck along the way, so if it was luck that won the game so be it. Better to be lucky than good. I believe the kids stepped up when they needed to and that is the mark of a great team. Played okay and made some mistakes but still won the game! 3-0 baby, I will take it any way we can get it!

News flash South Carolina is not a good football team. South Carolina is barely average. They have lost something like 7 or their 8 games including Vanderbilt (twice?). They can’t move the ball, their QBs are inconsistant and they have no running game. Defensively they are above average. Stop trying to spin a mediocre game by UGA. Yea, we won, thank goodness. This team is just like last year’s at this time is and set up for a loss real soon if they don’t fix themselves real quick.

We are definitely ahead of where were were this time last year. We got better as the year went on last year and we will this year too.

This time last year the offensive line had not yet jelled. Ditto this year. Last year this time The defensive line was not getting pressure on the passer. Ditto this year. This time last year South Carolina had beaten us. Not this year.

Stafford looks much better. The defense held South Carolina to 7 points. AJ Green looks like a star in the making. Samuels is starting to run with better body lean and he looked much quicker this week. He has Herschel like size and speed and he is improving more quickly than I thought he would. Demarcus Dobbs has been a pleasant surprise and I predict that Tyson will start really coming on as the year progresses. John Knox played an excellent game at South Carolina. I would not be surprised to see Vance Cuff to beat out Evans/Miller to become the starter before the season goes much further.

The penalties are a problem so far and Danielson was right that Martinez should have put a defensive back on Cook. But holding a team to 7 points is nothing to be ashamed of.

ESPN decides the polls. Re-watch the last two weeks of College Football final where the talking heads said that East Carolina was a top 15 team and there they began at 14 after being unranked and this week they said that OK was the second best and there they are. Until we are ESPN darlings we will be overlooked. We have be undefeated and be 12th at this rate.

By Atlanta Dawg

September 15, 2008 10:36 AM | Link to this

The polls really are not the issue at this point in the season. The issue is UGA does not look like a team ready to make a run for a title of any kind…YET!

The good: Moreno is awesome as always and got most of his yards on his own. AJ Green is the real deal…we just need to get the ball in his hands. The rush defense is really good!

The bad: The offensive line is a mess. They cannot run block..they cannot pass block. The D-line is great against the run but is not getting pressure on the QB. The safeties look completely lost. They have played against very sub par teams and are often out of position…pretty good on run support but too often out of position in coverage. Stafford has been very average (I know the receivers have had way too many drops as usual) and he still misses way too many receivers deep and/or does not hit them in stride. He did not even see several receivers Saturday that were running wide open down the field. I watched over a dozen QB’s play Saturday with a lot less pub that performed much better. I am a Stafford supporter but the results on the field just are not there to support his hype…YET!

The ugly: Tripp…Tripp…we saw this same thing the first half of last year. Let’s just hope he does not wait like last year until after the UT game to improve. The D-ends again have been good on run defense but stink at pass rushing. The kick off coverage is going to cost us soon if we don’t get it corrected

Again…it is still early and I believe the dawgs can do it but they will need to be much better to win the next three games.

Go Dawgs!!

A one point win would have been fine with me. Last year we lost to SC. We’re 3-0 and last year our O-line got better as the season progressed. Any reason to think that won’t happen again? We need to throw more to AJ. He looked great Saturday when he got the chance. Samuel is going to get better each week; in fact, he’s already improved from Game one. We also need to find a pass rusher, just like last year.

By diamond dawg

September 15, 2008 12:05 PM | Link to this

Geez guys, enough already about Tripp. He had one thrown behind him - could have caught it but it was not a great throw. The other “drop” was tipped by a defender. Watch the tape and you’ll see a defender get his hand in just before it gets to Chandler. Bottom line is SC played great D for the second year in a row. They’re definitely a team you want at the end of your schedule. Once they see the season falling apart they fold in the tent. They play with more effort when they feel like they still have a shot at an SEC title. I attribute that to Spurrier. Once he feels like his team is out of the mix, he doesn’t give a crap. Rivalries mean little to him at SC. He knows his legacy is in Gainesville.

We do need to shore up the defense or another UT disaster could be looming. Kickoffs are pretty bad too. If Walsh can boom it out of the endzone then let him do it. We need Southerland back….bad. Stafford needs to work on picking up the corner blitz.

It’s still early. USC east coast may not be as bad as you think. USC west coast may not be as good.

To my SC “pals” I haven’t had a chance to say it, but I was very surprised how good that defense was. I wasnt a believer. I am now. I doubt that we see a defense as strong and quick at the front 7 as that one the rest of the year, or at the very least SC is definetely in the upper tier.

Don’t get your panties in a wad PACWIN. USC traditionally schedules tough OOC games to make up for their sorry Pac 1 conference. FSU used to do it all the time in the 90’s before the merger.

The Dawgs need not apologize to anyone for our schedule this year. #1 toughest pre season. Two questions for our coaching staff that hopefully you can ask for us:

  1. Coach Richt/Bobo- Regarding the corner blitzes and subsequent sacks- are these errors on Stafford’s part? Is he supposed to recognize and take advantage of? CBS pointed out that there was not a defender within 40 yards of our WR from that corner blitz…sure TD missed opportunity. Did Chapas miss that block on purpose and if so, what purpose could that possibly serve?

  2. Coach Martinez- Have you watched any game film on USC (trojans) defense? Their schemes seem much more sophisticated than ours. Is there anything you can learn from this to help disguise our coverage and who is rushing (i.e. show 8 rushing and drop random 3 into coverage)? Are R Jones and CJ Byrd in the wrong positions? Seems as if R Jones is more of a punishing run stopper and CJ more of a pass defender. Have we looked at putting R Jones at Strong Safety and Byrd at Free?

Thanks Chip! You are our only voice to the coaches!

Personally I think some pollsters are retaliating against UGA for the criticism leveled at them by the Dawg Nation during the 2007 season. But I also believe Richt when he says “If we take care of business we’ll be back in business.” All we need to do is just keep winning and it will all come out in the wash. If not it’ll cause such an uproar that it’ll definitely signal the end of the BCS. But first our young men must keep on winning!

THE Ohio State Buckeyes

I have to go with FLA DAWG and the others on this one. USC will crush your buckeyes; USC 41 OSU 10. I think UGA vs usc will be closer, due to the rivalry, usc will play above themselves. It could be as close as UGA 21 usc 17; more likely 28-17 with UGA winning. I will continue following UGA as long as they are the likely victim for USC in the BCS. I would love to see that game. Good luck Dawgs.

Pretty damn close. I expected sc to play you close; the truth is you didn’t play well. If you expect to be playing for a NC you’ll have to step up your game.

USC is playing very well, if we want to play for a NC, we’ll have to continue playing at this level.

The truth is the way you played Saturday you couldn’t hope to stop the Trojans. If you think you could play the way you did Saturday and score more that 10 against the USC defense; well referring to an earlier poster, maybe you are drinking the cool aid.

See a lot of Dawg names mentioned, but don’t see the big love for Curran, a favorite of everyone. He saved 7 big ones from being posted on the boards. Perfect hit with helmet on the ball. No accident. Pure athleticism to give us more great game to watch. He is big pro material and hits like Odell and Thomas. Good Dawgs!

Sic ASU. We will watch closely to see every big play by this defense. I have worried about this game as a sneaky one that could get away. They may have been looking ahead to us, but that is no longer the case with this defense having big playmakers that only seem to multiply. Just think, we didn’t have 3 of our top 10 players. Asher Allen made game saving plays when some were committed to the rush and he came up for solo tackles. Look at the film on CSS today and you will see many plays that some of you buried in the outcome of the game. Defense held them to 7 pts. So what, it was a good effort to stop Spurrier’s tricks against the team he seems to prepare most against besides FU. Don’t worry, he may beat that arrogance from Crier this year. Go Gamecocks-beat’em all!

A lot of love toward Richt now after most people begin to focus on the end result and begin to listen. Let’s don’t get off this set of coaches. After all they put it together last year and are better so far this year.

Uga- can’t we get a trainer for you to pee on objects like Cocky’s shoes or feathers? Everyone think of objects we can train him to or to pee on command. Write them here. A toy glider shaped like an eagle, yellow socks on a bee, a box of Tide next to his fireplug, etc.. Too late on grabbing the Devil’s tail.

Get rid of Trip Chandler. He can’t catch the ball even when it hits his numbers and both hands. Remember him dropping touchdown passes last year against USC, TWICE? Remember him dropping 3 passes yesterday, two of which were on 3rd down and would of been 1st and ten? He’s terrible. Richt gave him a chance, he sucks, get rid of him.

And it sucks that the other team catches the ball on the 20 yard line after a kick off.

Shoot, I didn’t come back to the SEC to lose to Georgia 3 out of 4 years. Dang, I should have stayed in Gainesville for another year or two and retired a genius. Now I’m just another underachieving South Carolina coach who’s gonna get canned unless I turn this thing around real fast.

Herbie, I share your frustration with Chandler but he’s better than Milner a few years back and will get better as the season progresses. He just had a bad game. Last year he started out slow and finished well and I’m confident he’ll do the same this season. Don’t give up on the kid yet! Regarding kickoffs I agree but I think Walsh will be better when he gets a year or two under his belt in the strength and conditioning program. He seems sort of puny even for a kicker but he’s a weapon for field goals. In the meantime lets hope that someone else can step up and boot it out of the end zone on kickoffs.

It’s amazing: UGA wins a close game (by the way the spread was 7)against a conference opponent and they “aren’t as good as we thought”. USC loses a conference game last year to a 40 pt. underdog and “they didn’t take their opponent seriously”. To completely different outlooks towards a team.

What else is very unfortunate is that you can’t expect an SEC team to go undefeated. What Auburn did 4 years ago was amazing! However every year you look at USC and OSU schedule and say “if they lose it will be a HUGE upset”. Therefore, every year those teams are automatically in the NC picture. Their schedules are laughable.

UGA won’t play in the NC because their is no way they can go undefeated with that schedule.

By AltamahaDawg

September 15, 2008 3:36 PM | Link to this

Not to copy EZ but Chandler was critical in that run last year, and its not just receiving to factor in to examine who needs to be playing TE. Coulda, shoulda, BUT those were not the best passes coming to him, with LB camping out on top of him. He had one horrible game last year and pretty solid other than that.

And nobody is ever going to boot it out of the back of the endzone with any regularity from the 30 yr line. Through the 3rd week, they are less that 9% of kickoff resulting in touchbacks so far. Compared to only 30% last year , so its not as easy as it sounds. Estimate are that the average KO will land somewhere between the 8-12 yr line from now on with this new rule. Our guy is landing about 5 yards shy of that. He’s a 3 game old freshman.

It is too bad that the sports writers, network sports analysts and many fans do not have Mark Richt’s perspective. He has common sense and wisdom. Thank God we have him at UGA.

Mark Richt: I’m really not worried about it.

We will get better..the scores will come..AJ is good but not the second coming..yet! The game was contested by two good coaches..two good teams. There will be more like this..not because of the lack of preparation, nor ability but because other teams have good coaches and players, too. Fellow Dawgs you need to calm down for everything will be Okay, the world is not coming to an end because we only beat South Carolina by 7 points. What has you and ME as well upset is that you thought and expected that we were going to blow them out. Unfortunately that didn’t happen but you know what this team showed true grit and character and in spite of their poor play found a way to win the GAME. This will pay off as they get better and as the season goes along. This team expects to win even when they don’t bring their A game.

USC has played nobody as proven by UConn when they beat Virginia this past weekend by 45 points and we all know how overated OSU was and is as they had been previously exposed by Florida and LSU in the last two BCS National Championship games.

I wonder how many of you actually watch the OL and DL because if you had then you would have seen what I saw in that SC’s OL was holding on everydown and these were obvious holds that weren’t called. Next you would have seen that SC was stunting and gambling a lot with their DL, LBs and DB’s and where our DL was playing straight up. By SC gambling this exposed some weaknesses on our OL and the fullback which will be fixed by the coaching staff. So please just calm dowm and try and enjoy the season.

Excuse me, we Won over a 9-4 SEC powerful team who would kick your No. 71 Strength of Schedule Florida State Criminoles, and did it without 3 of our Top 7 players. Their back-ups are nearly ready now.

Breather with Arizona State this week, who plays a cupcake SoS, like all ACC teams do.

As for bowl game, no FSU is not going to any BCS Bowl Game like we are. You got 2 votes for beating Chattanooga and Western Carolina, both of whom Georgia Southern, South Carolina and Centeral Michigan would wipe the floor with.

I would have to disagree with you about who the best team is right now for it is too early in the season to tell. USC and especially Oklahoma have played no one. Virginia was exposed again by UConn this past weekend and we already knew The Ohio State Buckeyes were overated as they had been exposed by Florida and LSU in the last 2 BCS National Championship games. There is still a lot of games left to play and only God knows what is going to happen. I personally would like to see GA and USC in the BCS National Championship especially since we haven’t played each other since 1960 when we lost 10-3 to USC out in LA. GA vs. USC in the Rose Bowl last January IMHO would have been the Best bowl game and that is why it didn’t happen, because it would have overshadowed the BCS Championship game and I believe the winner would have been voted # 1 by the AP and the powers that be didn’t and wouldn’t allow that to happen. I wish USC good fortune for the rest of the year and hope that we both go undefeated so this question as who is the Best College Football Team for 2008 can be settled on the field of battle. Take care and BTW I went onto and read some of the USC blogs last year (but I never posted) and you have fans that are just as whinny and critical as ours.

AZ State ruint the game of the century. Just kidding the game between the mighty Pac 1 versus the SEC. Now if we don’t beat them by 24 points we will drop in the polls again.

Heck, screw the polls, just win baby. Get us back to Atlanta. One tough test over, and props to USC east.

Heck why not blackout the Bama game. Sounds like a good idea to me. No way we blackout the Vol game, we have no right after losing, and badly, the last two years.

I see a pattern: Teams look ahead before playing us and lose… onoy to give it everything to make up for it when they see us. What do you think chip? We also learned a few things this week:

1)Spurrier can still coach. His play calling in the second half was inspired. Bobo, on the other hand has some work to do. The fourth quarter is clear indication that he gets a little rattled playing against Darth.

2)Repeat after me… get AJ Green the ball…. do you hear me mike?

3)Imagine what would have happened if Spurrier had a quarterback! Somebody had better learn to rush the passer or ASU will drop 40 on us.

4)Losing your best linemen on both sides of the ball is not a good thing.

Uncle Dave, SOS needed an ugly game to have a shot at winning. He got just what He wanted, good coaching job. His problem is what every other coach at tUSCe has had, not enough quality athletes. He will upset someone this year, as He does every year. For You jerks that want to boo UGA players, I want to see You hang on to a high fast one from Stafford, even without Jasper breathing down Your neck. Then again, Jasper unloading on You while You were reaching for a high pass might teach You d******* a little respect. I would bench Tripp for a game or two and get His attention, if I had another TE with His speed that could block. Richt probably would too, if he had a TE like that, unfortunately, he doesn’t.

By AltamahaDawg

After seeing the replay: That particular pass, was 80% the fault of Stafford and 20% of not making the outstanding catch it would have taken. Chandler also played a near perfect blocking game, very obvious on several occations. He also dragged the LB away with a decoy route on several big plays going the other way. Oh yea, the SC TE, Cook….dropped 4 during the game.

Incidentally whoever was it earlier saying Danielson knows more about who best to cover that guy than Martinez did, Uh was that you RC? I’m guessing now seeing the replay you realized that we DID have R Jones on Cook more times than a LB. Gave up a couple of completion, 2 pass interferances, a break up and an INT to end the game. We rarely had a LB in one on one coverage once he became the target.

Tech fans will feel good, however, beacause the next 2 “games” are Duke and Gardner-Webb. Georgia Tech’s Official NCAA Strength of Schedule for all games this season played and futre is No. 73. Good Lord, that’s worse than Southern California. I didn’t think that was possible to have a softer, easier schedule than Southern California.

The Georgia Bulldogs lead The SEC in Net Punting and in Passing Efficiency.

All 12 SEC teams play a Far Tougher SoS than Southern California.

9 of the Top 25 SoS are SEC teams.

Only South Carolina plays an easier schedule than Arizona State, with 11 SEC teams having a Far Tougher SoS than Arizona State.

Arizona State beat not 1 single solitary Final BCS Poll Top 25 team last year, including their bowl game loss, which they earned for such a Cupcake Schedule last season, a bowl game on 27 December.

Nice.

Your fans were asleep last week.

They never show up to the games.

The PAC-1 has the worst attendance of all conferences.

No one cares about your cupcake schedule telling us how great you are.

You are NOT. You’ll see. We will fill your stands. We even bought up “Season Tickets” to your stadium for $209 each just to watch the 1 game, and throw all the rest away - like your fans do.**

Powder Puff.

Cream Puff.

It is best to just ignore BuLLdawg, he is one of those stat guys who will take over a blog. Most of the regulars on this blog are reasonable and like to discuss football without the ignorant and inflamatory comments of some posters. So I hope you keep posting as that will mean my Dawgs and your Trojans are doing well. BTW that 2004 team was truly one of the Great College Teams of all time and they were a pleasure watching. Most of us would have rather seen Auburn vs. USC since IMHO they were a Great team as well and beat a pretty good Georgia team quite convincingly.

Thanks for the link.

BTW

USC sells out every home game 93,000+.

USC plays 3 OOC games. Virginia was 9-4 last year and played in the Gator Bowl; OSU was 11-2 last year and played for a NC.

The Norte Dame game is one of the longest traditions in college football. There are more NC and Heisman’s out of the rivalry than any other in history. We play them good or bad.

We play our conference games like every other team in every other conference. We don’t avoid anyone and we schedule much tougher OOC games (under our control) than UGA and most other schools do.

If we meet Georgia in the NC count on one thing, we’ll bring it. Look back over the last 5 years and tell me how often we lose by more that 7.

Thanks Big Dawg

I will say this. The people (most) on this blog know football. I just need to make them understand USC is best :).

If you like numbers here’s some.

USC is 10 and 2 against Top 10 Teams the past 5 years. They are 3-0 against the SEC (Auburn was rated #6 when USC beat them, and Arkansas (twice) 2005-06 the razorback went 10-4 in 2006).

USC has lost 6 times by a total of 20 points the past 5 years (never by more than 7, the average loss is by 3.3 points.

2 of the losses came against teams rated in the top 5, 1 of those was to Texas in the NC.

The USC Trojans have won 11 or more games the past 6 seasons and have 6 BCS appearances, both NCAA FBS (1-A) records.

PacWin,

Virginia was 9-4 LAST YEAR. They’ll be lucky to go 4-9 THIS year.

OSU was 11-2 LAST YEAR. They play a weak schedule and you played them without their star running back this year. Also, they got whipped by and SEC team in the nc.

Notre Dame was a poor, poor team last year.

USC is a good team. But truth is they don’t play too many teams of the caliber of LSU, Florida, Georgia, or Auburn (usually tough). I think USC could beat any of those teams, but I also feel they could lose as well. One game between SEC powers and USC really proves nothing. When we’ve played a series, then we will know just how good USC really is.

The PAC 10 is a NON CONTENDER Conference with USC being THE ONLY CONTENDER inside of that Conference.

Lets face it. Let the truth be told, it’s the Sports media and the ESPN Analyst that have their own picks and favorites. Mark May likes Oklahoma, the others like USC, and Ohio State.

At least now the ESPN Sports Analyst can keep their mouths shut being that Ohio State oh excuse me, THE OHIO STATE has loss a game. Michigan has been losing as well. I said it last year, and I will say it again that the PAC 10, The Big 10, and the Big 12 are OVERRATED.

The SEC Conference is by far the strongest and toughest conference in the NCAA today. With five SEC Teams being in the top 10 this year should come at no suprise. For years the SEC would have three to four Schools in the TOP 10 anyway. Go back and check the previous years Polls.

They cheated Georgia last year whom should have played in the national championship title and place THE OHIO STATE Buckeyes in there with SEC Power LSU. You see how they got demolished. Then Georgia Demoralized Hawaii whom they gave so much publicity to.

They said themselves that they have never played against a team like Georgia that was so strong, so physical, so fast before. They were just man handled on the field inside the Georgia Dome.

To this day, the sports media continue to disrespect Coach Richt, the Dawgs, the Dawg Fans by jumping over the Dawgs in the Polls just because the Dawgs have not run the numbers up on teams. South Carolina gives the Dawgs a good game every year.

Coach Richt, Please let the Dawgs run the number up on this PAC 10 team that we are playing on this Saturday to show the world that the Dawgs are number 1.

Now to all of your naysayers and Dawg Haters, I will say this to you all.

“LIKE IT IT, OR DON’T LIKE IT, LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT, BECAUSE THE DAWGS ARE THE BEST TEAM GOING TODAY”.

GO DAWGS. BEAT ARIZONA STATE………. ROO ROO ROO ROO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eric,

I see you are feeling what so many of us are about the media and the whole polling process. I was enraged when Auburn got shut out in favor of the media darlings that year. Those teams went undefeated playing the same sorry schedules they play now. We need a new system that holds poll voters accountable.

This is not just a UGA thing for me. Our current system cheapens the sport by making it more about money than sportsmanship. ESPuke’s agenda is market share and ad dollars, the conferences want TV contracts, the college presidents want money, the bowls want money and guess whose money they are getting…OURS. We subsidize the crappy beauty contest that exists today to determine NC’s. We perpetuate the unfairness and inconsistency of the current system because we keep tuning in to the pregame, ingame, post game and countless scoreboard shows on ESPuke.

If you care about competition on the field as most fans say they do…then start complaining. Let the networks know you’re tired of the bias. Watch the games, but tune out of everything else. Write emails to the college presidents, the SEC Commish Slive, and especially to ESPuke. Tell them you are sick of the biased reporting that influences voters in the crappy system we have.

Give us a playoff.
