UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Stafford key for Dogs today
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Greetings from the press box high above the field at South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium. For the third week in a row the Bulldogs are going to encounter extremely hot and humid conditions. Nice blue sky dotted with fat cumulus clouds that look like they could grow into thunderheads given the chance. Fortunately for me — and I realize you all are concerned first and foremost about me — this is an enclosed and air-conditioned press box. But a beautiful day for football.
OK, to today’s game. While most eyes are going to be on Knowshon Moreno for Georgia — I’m sitting here watching him field punts in pregame warmups, by the way — the player Bulldogs fans need to be focusing on today is Matthew Stafford.
Quite frankly, Stafford hasn’t played well at all in his two games against the Gamecocks. Combined, he’s 27 of 63 (.429) for 384 yards with zero touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Based on those numbers the real surprise is that Georgia won either game.
Now Stafford’s first game against South Carolina is understandable. He was a true freshman thrown into the fire when senior starter Joe Tereshinski went down in the first quarter with a foot injury. He threw three interceptions in that one but none of them led to points in Georgia’s 18-0 win.
Last year he threw 25 incompletions in 44 attempts and, though victimized by a couple of drops — at least two of which would have been touchdowns — he was off target all day. Stafford will be facing virtually the same front seven for South Carolina that harassed him in that game last year. So, simply put, he has to play much better, more like the quarterback we’re used to seeing late in the season. And, of course, Georgia’s line has to give him time to operate.
That said, you can bet we’ll see a lot more of Moreno than we did last season, when he had 16 touches. Unlike last year at this time, he’s unquestioned as The Man. But if his game is working or not, Stafford’s will have to be.
STAY TUNED AS I’LL BE WITH YOU THE WHOLE GAME. CONTINUAL UPDATES PROVIDED IN COMMENTS BELOW!

UPDATE #2
Lots of new things for Dogs today: Drew Butler came in to “pooch punt.” Moreno on a punt return… .
This isn’t new, however: Georgia dropping passes vs. South Carolina.
Tight end Tripp Chandler has dropped two. Both of them possession-killing, third-down drops.

Hi, I’m Tripp Chandler. In an anatomical anomole, I actually have feet where my hands are supposed to be.
So who has seen this game b4? It looks like 2007 redux. Ugly football with no offense and Tripp Chandler killing drives.
All it takes is one fluke play where SC scores to put the pressure on the dogs.
Tripp, kill yourself.

UPDATE #3
Georgia 3, S.C. 0
Sorry for the delay. Having connectivity issues today… .
So far the grade for the refs if F. If we in the press box could flag the officials for delay of game we would… .
Game has a similar feel to last year’s and that’s not good for Georgia. Dogs had three dropped passes so far. Latest was Kris Durham in end zone. Dogs settle for 42-yard Blair Walsh field goal. Stafford denied a TD vs. Gamecocks once again.

Michael G,
It doesn’t matter what it feels like. Check last year’s game for evidence of that.
There’s your play - lightning strikes and SC scores down the sideline to Mo Brown.
Pressure’s on now. Why can’t GA receivers catch the GD ball?

S. CAROLINA 7, GEORGIA 3
South Carolina’s Moe Brown beats Remarcus Brown down left sideline for a 34-yard touchdown pass from QB Chris Smelley. First career TDs for both S.C. guys.
Drive 5 plays, 62 yards, 1:40.
Again, eerily similar to last season… .

UPDATE #5
S.C. calls timeout with Georgia 2-and-5 at the SC 10… .
A.J. Green finally made a mark on the game. Hauled in a 39-yard pass from Stafford on third-and-21… .

HALFTIME UPDATE
The end zone bugaboos have surfaced for the Dogs again this year. After getting first-and-goal at the South Carolina 4, the Bulldogs wound up fourth-and-goal from the 6 and had to settle for a 23-yard Walsh field goal at the halftime horn. Chris Davis snap infraction on third and goal from the 1 was the main culprit.
So …
South Carolina 7, Georgia 6.
Dogs have some things to work out in the locker room. Namely, catch the ball, cover the deep third, cut down on penalties.

Where does the GA is great attitude come from? Beating two over-rated high school teams. If it wasn’t for bad officiating, SC would be up 8 points on the UGAY puppies.

Dawg Fans, 3 things in this game that do not bode well for the rest of today or the season: 1. Penalties 6-60 yds and cost us a td 2. The off. line is getting whipped on nearly every play 3. No pass rush from the front four
If our coaches do not get these 3 things fixed quickly, our SEC hopes will will go down the drain against SC just like last year.

SOME STATS
Stafford’s actually having a decent day considering the three drops. 10-of-17 for 106 yards.
Moreno has 10 carries for 50 yards.
Georgia penalized 6-60 compared to 2-20 for S.C.
SC total offense 81, Georgia 169.
Dogs to receive to open second half.

What in the h#ll kind of effort is this? First and goal from the five, and we can’t get a TD? Matt making a run in open field is one thing, but is he really our best option on third and goal?! Where is Caleb King (R. Samuel has made some weak runs)? Tripp Chandler clearly left his head and hands back in Athens!

Not really a good effort YET, I look for a better 2nd half.
Stafford’s stats OK but he seems to have nervous feet, SC bring a lot of pressure unlike us.
Few highlights but to me we seemed headed in the wrong direction. Why throw so much? A balanced attack would seem to be much better.
We lose this and the coaching staff is going to have to withstand some serious heat.
Go Dawgs, first possession we have to score, Dawgs 13-7 or else it may be a long tough road to the finish line. We still prevail.

KNOWSHON MORENO SCORES TOUCHDOWN. That was about as good a four-yard run as you’ll see ever see, keeping his balance after getting his legs cut on toss sweep left. Refs had to review of course because they couldn’t what they saw.

The OLine has not shown any ability to block the GAMECOCK D. With all the talented WR and Backs on the roster why is Logan Gray returning punts is he faster than those guys? Chip can you ask Mark the reason for this, I think it is nonsense. It seems that with all the abundance of riches at Georgia, the coaches do not know how to use them. This sure does not look like the top team in the east, not the Defense not the offense not the special team. Based on this performance so far they will not beat Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, LSU and may not beat Vandy. This coaching staff needs some shaking up, and I suggest it starts with the OC.

If UGA wins they should consider themselves extremely lucky. The ‘Cocks have been moving the ball better than the Dawgs in the second half. There seems to have been no adjustments made at halftime that worked. Not a stellar performance. SC is killing UGA on the inside slants, and our pass rush is nonexistent. The offense has shown no imagination, and has not executed well at all. Some credit goes to SC, but the Dawgs’ miscues haven’t helped.

UPDATE
Sorry but connectivity issues still dogging me. Crashing when I try to post… .
As I wrote before Rennie Curran’s tackle of Mike Davis forced a fumble that Asher Allen recovered in the end zone for a touchback… .
Georgia forced to punt deep in territory and gets a 77-yard punt from Brian Mimbs. …
S.C. came flying back down field and gave the ball over on downs on a strange pass call on fourth and 2 at Georgia 32. Fade pass wasn’t close to anybody… .
Georgia couldn’t knock out a first down on three Moreno runs so that’s where we are.
This is last post here. NEW BLOG GOING UP.

Well, it’s a win, but the Dawgs have a lot of work to do. The coaching staff has to get the penalties under control. Wasn’t it about this time last year when everyone, including me, was calling for CWM’s head for lack of pressure on the qb? He almost let a really Smelly qb beat us by not bringing the heat. SC owned the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. We got no push all day. We will have to play better to run the gauntlet.

Congrats SC, you played a great game. UGA, well, IMO the coaching staff runs steps at practice next week. Not very well played or coached throughout, again IMO. Like I said earlier, a few highlights to build on. Green looked good when they went to him.
Seriously, when is this coaching staff going to get a clue. 7:55 to play, we’ve just saved ourselves with a great defensive play. Who called the home run effort on first down from the 20? Totally idiotic, damn near cost us the game. How many times do we have to see this? Control the football, run out the clock. You got KNOWSHON, bobo or richt who ever is making the calls, I could care less about staffords stats, give us a W.
Team wins this one despite the coaching! ! ! Just the opinion of one frustrated Dawg.
Whew, I needed to get that out of my system. Tough game, most of us expected it, but hoped for much better. SC is always tough. Not pretty but a win. 3-0 going to the desert for another test.

These coaches are a joke. Heisman candidate running back barely touches the ball. Instead, they use him as a decoy. What a joke. The dawgs played scared, the coaches coached like idiots, and of course, its “all about a W.” This is college football, and unfortunate, you gotta’ do more than get a W. Terrible.

Most pitiful coaching effort I have seen in a loooonnnnnngggg time. Reminded me a lot of Ole Miss ‘96, Auburn ‘97, Auburn ‘99, etc…
The game today should not have been within 2 TD’s. We are light years ahead of Scu talent wise, yet we just kept letting them hang in there. Pathetic coaching today. Really, really pitiful.

State next week, or another SEC team will be embarrassed nationally by a Pac 10 team. I would safely say, that Florida’s defense this year looks like your defense at the end of last year, and the Georgia offense looks like Florida’s defense at the end of last year. Yum! Yum!

CWM is not up to the standards that the UGA D deserves. He tried hard to choke during the last 2 SC drives- fortunatly w recruit great playes that mae plays-
Why did we not cove Cook- He was their # 1 weapon today and we stick a lb on him all day.
Why can t we get a 1st down in either of the last 2 UGA drives- we know CWM is goig to choke up and risk a loss- Not impresed with thecoahing at all today. We have the weapons, the players give the effort- but we really play like we have a lot les talent than we do.
The W belongs to the players today- they dd not get much help from the brain trust today.

Georgia Fans/Haters /Neutral Observers….
Yeah- the Dawgs played a terrible game, but you know what…the last 3 BCS Champs had games during the season that they won UGLY, yet they won
UGA doesn’t have to worry about style points because if they make it to the SECCG and win ,then they can punch their ticket to play in the BCS Champ Game in Miami 2009.
With that being said- this was a good win because now UGA will go in ASU focused.
Finally, South Carolina Defense is top 3 in the nation…just thought you should know.

Chip, your comments were prescient. Without Stafford, the Dawgs would have gone down. Although it wasn’t a pretty game, Stafford did just enough to keep the UGA offense in the game. Hand it to Spurrier, though. He had a beautiful defensive plan. God help us if he ever finds a quarterback over there.

As the game was transpiring some fans were responding with shouts of..”POROUS, POROUS, POROUS!!!, obviously referring to GA’s defense as one of the very worst offenses in South Carolina Gamecock history easily made its way down field. And the ‘all world’ Georgia Bulldog offense was as incompetent as Congress. The coaching staff for the Bulldogs might as well have stayed home for the meager benefit they gave this team. Georgia will be lucky to win any of their remaining games if this is an indication of this team’s talent…….and it is. It was nearly impossible to tell which team was worse, but in the end, a person with a modest amount of intelligence would believe the Gamecocks were…..although not by very much.

Predictable play calling on Bobo’s part. Trip C. costly drops have become his norm. Knowshon looked good as usual. O line looked questionable. Willie M. back to his weak, lack of pass rush prevent D. Typical UGA-SC game though. We were extremely lucky to get away with a win but we’ll take it. Now on to ASU, kinda worried now… GO DAWGS !!!

Can’t believe that Smelly would have been the better QB today either. Props to Mimbs on that 70 yard punt. Great play kid. I hated to see the D turn around and waste it. If the inept SC offense, which can’t decide on a QB can do that to our D that easily better be watching a lot of film on ASU all week. Willie, why does it have to be that way. Please get to mid season form by next week.

Some of you people on this board are absolute idiots. You should know that one game doesn’t mean anything as to how you will play another. Georgia got creamed last year against UT and I bet a lot of you thought no way they beat the gators. Different day different circumstances. Sure it was an ugly win but show me any team that has steam rolled the entire SEC.

Why would Willie Martinez not make an adjustment? Danielson for CBS was shocked that Mrtinez wouldn’t bring in extra DB’s to put on the receivers. Instead they kept linebackers on all of these extra receivers all day. I don’t blame the defense at all for that. It’s scarey that the adjustment that should have been made was so obvious to everyone except the Georgia coaching staff. D-line got no pressure on the QB. Ugly win on the road but you are going to have those in the SEC. Better than a bad loss.

One team that can steam roll the entire SEC is the USC Trojans…..and probaly with the greatest of ease. But a team wouldn’t have to do much to steamroll either South Carolina or Georgia. If the rest of the SEC is like these two teams, steamrolling all 12 teams wouldn’t be much of an accomplishment.

Ga Tech fans need to go to their own blog and discuss their loss (yes, loss) and not our win today. I was disappointed in the performance by our O today. Our D played sloppy at times but overall got the job done. Tripp needs to hang on to the ball this season if we are going to run the table. I was one of the few fans who didn’t think this one would be close. I underestimated SC’s D because they obviously stepped it up for UGA. The win feels good though (much better than last year’s result) and hopefully will be the 3rd of many this season. One SEC test down, many more to go. Now we need to prep for ASU and find a way to avoid racking up the penalties. Without the penalties I think we would have put 1 or more additional TD’s on the board. Let’s go Dawgs, learn from this one!

To william cranman:
The defense was able to penetrate the line; however ,the D backs were getting burned because the QB had all day to throw. When we put on a pass rush we got to the QB. But when we played the front man four they were double teamed which allowed the receivers to get open. I would credit that to the type of pass rush or lack thereof by W Martinez.
On another note: Unless Bobo has something up his sleeve…his playcalling was horrible to say the least. There’s no excuse for not scoring more than 1 touchdown with the wealth of offensive talent on the Dawgs team

I’d like to add that those of you who are dismissing South Carolina are making a big mistake. These guys are talented and will end up beating some people. Their offensive and defensive linemen can play with anyone. UGA will improve and we’ll see some offensive fireworks later on, but right now we are fortunate to be heading west undefeated. Some games you need to be lucky. We got lucky and my hat is off to a plucky UGA defense for holding Carolina to seven points. That is something to cheer about.
