UGA blog finds new home
Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.
Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.
Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.
See at the new place!

Dogs pull out ugly 14-7 win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Welcome to SEC play, Bulldog fans. Coach Mark Richt referred to Georgia’s games with South Carolina as bloodbaths. The teams left Williams-Brice Stadium with the field stained red.
This one followed the script of all the others. Tight. Ugly. Physical.
And most importantly for Georgia, a win for the 45th time in 61 games against the Gamecocks.
The No. 2-ranked Bulldogs needed an interception by safety Reshad Jones inside the Georgia 10 to preserve a 14-7 victory. The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown in nine quarters in the series on a fairly remarkable 4-yard Knowshon Moreno run. Moreno had only 79 yards on 20 carries. Stafford sacked four times.
South Carolina offense carved up Georgia’s secondary in second half. The Bulldogs will have to get that shored up before next Saturday’s game at Arizona State.
But like in NCAA basketball, the season is about survive and advance and the Bulldogs survived.
I’ll update with more stats soon but have to hustle down for interviews.
Until then… .

I’ll start by saying that I will take the win, no matter how ugly. I am a little disappointed with the game plan and the penalties. We cannot continue to beat ourselves by giving up so many calls. Wow… If we don’t tune it up we may not get by ASU and Bama.

Georgia was lucky to get away with the win. Any team that commits 11 penalties ( one that prevented a Red Zone TD) and drops 3 key passes (one for a TD) can’t exactly claim to deserve the W. I know this match-up is always close but the GA team gave SC plenty of help this year. If we continue the execute this poorly with this year’s schedule then things do not look promising. I’m glad UGA got the win but there are many trends that are cause for concern.

Dawgs don’t look like a Top 20 team, much less a Top 5.
The secondary has read too many press clippings and shows little interest in playing sound and fundamental coverage techniques, trying to rely solely on athleticism. I place the blame directly on poor coaching by Coach Martinez.
Also, the OL has now been exposed as inexperienced and not very physical. They were pushed around all afternoon.
Don’t see how Dawgs navigate this schedule, given what we saw today. Guess I’ll cancel those reservations for Miami.

An ugly win, for sure. Now maybe UGA fans will quit fast-forwarding the season with all the NC talk, and go back to the Bulldawg style of play, which is one game at a time. Let’s quit trying to end it before it gets going good. We have a ways to go, but just maybe we can preserve.

We looked a lot like a Jim Donn*n coached team today. Dropped passes, bad gameplan, poorly conditioned, penalties, etc…
No way Scu should be within 3 TD’s of us.
That was a pathetic effort by the coaches. Really, really a pathetic effort by the coaches.
Kudos to Brian Mimbs; he is the player of the game, without question.
We may lose by 40 next weekend.

The Dawgs are shooting themselves in the foot with way, way too many penalties. I’m glad we won but that crap has got to stop. I expected a game like this. How lucky are the Dawgs that that ball pooped out of SC’s hands for the fumble and we recover? We were lucky all day. I love the Dawgs but a #2 team should have dominated all day. But I give SC credit, they played us tough as always.

What awful play calling and defensive scheme. No pressure on defense, awful calls on offense. Why the love affair with the long pass…it is low % and you have got to run. It is a win and to play for a Championship you need luck whci we had today. I am real dissapointed in the play calling
By honest_abe

one word. pressure. where the hell was it? been saying for the last two weeks that the ends just haven’t been getting the job done. i’m worried as south carolina’s offensive line has looked real poor in their first two games but they looked like all pro’s today. the best pressure comes from georgia’s tackles but lomax, dobbs, houston and wynn have looked avg at best… slick willy still gets the job done but his blitz packages suck.
offensively, too many dropped passes. it looked like milner came back disguised as chandler and durham just doesn’t impress me. why’d the dawgs play so much of samuel? i’d much rather have seen king. when is stafford going to start seeing the other side of the field?
not everything was bad. a few bright spots include the defensive tackles, ellerbe and curran, mimbs, and aj green. can someone please let richt know that green needs to be on the field the entire time!
a win’s a win but if georgia doesn’t start to get pressure from their front four this team ain’t winning not sec championship much less a national one.

I like how the haters are saying we don’t deserve the #2 ranking. They’re just mad that Georgia would beat their team—pretty or otherwise.
That being said, Willie’s D looked horrid against the pass. How many times does it take one of our LBs to get smoked or penalized for Willie to make the adjustment???
Game balls go to Rennie and Knowshon, whom we didn’t feed that much for some reason…
AJ Green is coming along quite nicely. He could be our Calvin Johnson.
I’m most disappointed by our lack of pressure on their QBs. That MUST improve!!!

A win…I’ll take it. It was you average, run of the mill UGA/SC game. Ugly. Nerve wracking. Frustrating. You can’t deny that the penalties have got to be reduced. If this pace keeps up it could come back to bite the Dawgs in the butt.
But even the champions have to play/win ugly ones…just ask Florida and LSU. Let’s hope that we can step it up a bit on the road next week and get another ‘W’ before two huge home games with Bama and UT.

Ugly win but I’ll take it! With games left against ASU, FLA, TENN, LSU, ALA, and AUB the Dawgs need to take it one game at a time. These are the games early in the season that we usually end up losing and then play our best football afterwards. One game at a time Dawg fans, we will get better as the season goes on!

My my, how most of you haters forget….Florida and LSU also had ugly wins (against bad teams) en route to championships the last couple of years. EVERY championship team has to get an ugly win.
Even Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush’s USC team had an ugly win during their 1st championship season….Remember that Fresno State game?
Bottom line, a W is a W.

This team makes me want to puke. I’m so sick of watching UGA underperform with all-world talent. This team and this program won’t win a national title in a very long time. Martinez is clueless and needs to be sent packing. Bobo needs to stop p****** his wife and take an offensive coordinator clinic. Our defense and offense are laughable. I’ve about reached my limit with this team.
Stafford’s receivers must hate his guts. 6 dropped passes, two dropped TD passes. and 4 would-be first down passes also dropped. All the talk about a national title needs to stop. We aren’t even close. Florida, Southern Cal, OSU, Missouri, and Florida would have ripped this second rate football team. Hell, Vandy looked more impressive. If UGA doesn’t play a hell of a lot better next week, they can kiss my a**. As a graduate, it pains me to say that.

I predicted a win by 2 or 3 TDs. I was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG… Give So. Car. credit. They fought one of the best fights and almost won. Congratulations to the Gamecocks.
As for The Dawgs… plenty of talent but WAY TOO MANY Penalties. And what kind of play calling was going on today. Martinez; I couldn’t put it better than the tv commentator - why give SC the pass when that is the only weapon they have!? The middle was open all day and Spurrier took advantage of it.
Offense; Bobo, was there even an offensive game plan today ? Damn Boy - you better get it together real quick or the Sun Devils will kick out butts.
We won but didn’t look anything like a #2 Team.

I keep hearing if GA makes it through the schedule undefeated, if they make it through with 1 loss….Hell, we are going to be lucky to lose less than 4 (ASU, ALA, TENN, LSU). This season is going to get ugly real fast next week. Losing Sturdivant was huge…more so than I think most realized. That said, South Carolina was one of the best in the nation defensively, so some struggles were to be expected.

The “W” is huge for staring the SEC game run, but as said above this was ugly and not worthy of a #2 ranking.
The lack of pressure without blitzing shows the big defensive weakness. The inability to protect well or create holes shows the weakness in the offensive line. Unless the dogs can win at the line of scrimmage they have no chance of winning the SEC much less the national title. …but then again a win is a win…go dawgs…keep getting better.

Well we won buuuutt , this is too much for a old man. This was too close to going the other way. This team is so talented but as mentioned too many mistakes. Yes, Yes we should have scored more points but do give SC defense their due. WE have to get a pass rush. However is shakes our , we are 3 and o but must make major improvements.

I don’t see the chemistry or intensity for that matter yet. Dogs were lucky to have won this game and I agree that the game plan, execution along with penalities is concerning. Good news is it may have been a wake up call for everyone. I fully expect to see a much different team next week. They also know they were fortunate to win and they will be ready.

Mike Bozo needs to clear up the playing calling. Too many players were suffled in the offense today. No need to rotate when those who produce are always taken out of rythem. God Tripp Chandler needs to take up bowling, cause the hell if he can catch a ball.
Hopefully Stafford is ok. Next week will again be a huge challenge, as Rudy Carpenter will destroy the weak secondary. Need a big week of prep for the Sundevils.

A win is a win, but that game was painful to watch. The O line couldn’t block or protect Stafford, the D line couldn’t get pressure on Smelly, the secondary was horrible, the play calling was suspect the receivers dropped way too many passes, etc, etc, etc. I had a lot of hope coming into this season even with the tough schedule. But if these guys don’t shore up a lot of problems and in a hurry they won’t even be playing for the SEC title. Yes, this is a big rivalry. So what. That is no excuse for the way these guys played today. How is it that SC is at their best against us and we are at our worst against them? UGA had plenty of motivation going into this game and still played terribly. If they don’t figure some things out, the Dawgs are going to get smacked by ASU next week.

This was disgusting to watch and embarassing. I had to take 800mg of ibuprophen at halftime.
Most importantly I had to except that we do not have a very good team. On the field play was horrendous.
I will p** off a lot of people when I say this, but let the excuses begin, my fellow Dawg fans (you’re great at it). Vandy put 24 on SC last week. The reality is South Carolina is not very good and after the way we played, it showed that neither are we.
Play like this and we will lose to Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee, Vandy, LSU, Florida, Auburn and Tech finishing 4-8.
Go ahead Dawg fans do what you do best, let me hear all the great excuses…

This gam was very frustrating to watch. Georgia’s sof offensive line better get tough or we are looking at 4 loses this year. There is no pressure from the DE. As good of linebackers as we have we have got to get in better schemes to protect them against mismatches. Stafford has to see the entire field, he missed a lot of open recievers because he was looking at one side. What the H* was Bobo calling on the next to the last series when Knowshon didnt touch the ball. Finally, number 11, i think its Brown on defense, he sucks he got beat all day and I would say roll help his way all the time.I think the Dawgs will play much better next week because Astate is not as physical as south carolina and we should be able to run the ball better. A.J Green should never leave the field and trip chandler should be on the bench.

I was wrong, and USC played their hearts out. We should have taken them to the woodshed, but what is it about playing this team. Our whole team looked like they weren’t focused. Last year I thought it would be a close game, and I thought we might even lose, but this year I thought USC stood no chance. Willie, where the hell was the Nickel? Are we missing some DB’s? They might as well tell our Defense they are going to throw to 84 on every play in the fourth quarter. And we still couldn’t stop them. If we don’t fix it Carpenter will eat our secondary alive.

First of all, joe_h - there is no need for crude comments about coaches wives. Would you say that to Bobo’s face? No, cause he would take you out. But you can hide behind your keyboard. Secondly, I was frustrated by the 3 man rush. there is not a quarterback in 1-A football that won’t make completions if you give him enough time. Every time we brought the blitz the qb was hurried and made a mistake. Think about the the sugar bowl last year and how often we put Colt Brennan on his can. That’s the way to stop the pass. At least if you are going to only rush 3 put some more corners or safeties in the game that can cover vs. linebackers. I am glad we got out with a win and we will get better as the year goes on. We have a lot of youngsters who need some game time. I just hope that Martinez puts a better game plan together next week.

Pathetic. In the second half the Dawgs looked absolutely unprepared for any halftime adjustments SC made. Dropped passes, penalties, lack of execution, the list goes on and on. UGA played horribly, but give the ‘Cocks credit. They played better than than the Dawgs did; UGA got lucky. They certainly didn’t look like a top 10 team, much less a top 5 team. The only positive out of this was that the Dawgs got the W. If this kind of play continues those will be hard to come by.

Our O and D coordinators called a horrible game. That Samuel kid is not ready. He has no instinct or vision needed to be successful on this level. AJ is becoming our most dependable receiver. Why are we teasing him with the few touches he receives each game? This kid needs to be involved just as much as Moreno. Come on Dawgs! Chandler’s scholarship needs to be revoked. Martinez: we are getting roasted in that soft zone. we would give up fewer big plays blitzing than sitting back and getting picked apart. I turned the game off and played MLB 08 The Show for the rest of the game. A win is a win… I can only hope that we make the necessary adjustments and utilize our talent. Go Dawgs!

Once again Spurrier outcoaches CMR! The SCar defensive coord knows Mike BooBo like the back of his hand. Can you believe the next to last offensive series when SCar punted the ball and had us deep in our own territory. 3 plays and out! Run the ball and bleed the clock, Boobo! When I saw UGA’s ‘08 schedule and as the season got closer I wasn’t worried about Bama, LSU, Aub, Tenn, or the lizards; I know UGA will be fired up to play them, I was worried about SCar and Vandy! Get the ball to Massaquoi and Green! I give the offense a D; and the defense gets an A. Hey Coach Martinez, good job today, but you may want to read the scouting report next time. SCar has a great TIGHTEND by the name of COOK! #84! And yep he’s from Suwanee. We can only get better, but if we, the Dawg Nation, think UGA is going to go undefeated in the SEC, then we are dreaming. The SEC is just too tough. The only two areas of concern are 1) UGA has to do a better job of keeping its pass rushers fresh, 2) Rcvrs dropping passes. Keep working hard, Dawgs!

I don’t hate UGA. Far from it. However, Georgia will drop drop drop in the polls. The pollsters will see an unranked team giving them a very tough game. The #2 team in the nation shouldn’t have had any problems rolling over an unranked team. That’s how they’ll look at it.

Some of you so called UGA fans(band wagon jumpers Who obviously know nothing about tough, hard fought SEC football games) need to take a deeep breath, relax, and read your blogs again…then think about what you are saying.
USC east ALWAYS plays us tough. They have a really good defence. REALLY good. We won a tough fought hard nosed SEC road game. We are 3-0. Yes we won…the same team that finished #2 in the nation last year that LOST to Carolina. Carolina WILL beat at least 1 good football team this year…..and it won’t be us. I wish to God that CMR would give you so called experts an opportunity to come to Athens and coach the offense and defense next week. It would take you about 10 minutes to realize that you were in WAY over your head, and didn t know what the h*ll you were talking about. Coach Bobo didnt drop those passes. CWM didnt blow the coverage by the safety on the TD pass. I am concerned about the pass rush(or lack thereof), however at this point we dont seem to have a real pass rush threat at DE. Hopefully they will figure out how to make up for that. In the mean time…congrats to the DAWHS for a close hard fought road win in the SEC!!!!!! GOOOOOO DAWGS and THWGT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Mutts. Good win, but hardly the blowout victory you all predicted.

See you in Jacksonville, chumps.

I don’t think the fans are jumping off any wagon; they are justifiably concerned about the Dawgs’ play. UGA got a pass on the criticism the first couple of games because they were playing a lot of reserves. That was not the case today. The Dawgs were outplayed and the coaches were outcoached. This was one ot the poorest performances that Georgia has displayed in a long time; I’m still one of the biggest UGA fans in the country, but the truth is the truth.

Poorly Prepared & one of CMR’s poorer games. Ck. the Penalties.
Martinez absolutely suxs. If SC had had ANY ground attack, it would not have been close. Pass Defense suxed also. Spurrier played 3 Quarterbacks had no faith in any of them. I didn’t understand the Linebackers on Wide receivers(Yes, I am not smart enough to figure that out, but the TV Guys did). CMR needs to take him to the Woodshed & think about a change.
Spurrier is totally washed up, except when he plays GA. It is over, quit fearing him. This should have been a Blow Out, except for the mistakes.
Now the receivers. Chandler is up to his old tricks. You can no longer count on Durham in a TD situation. Couldn’t believe T. King dropped one. Catch the ball & it is not close, in spite of anything else. You just can’t throw to some of these guys when it counts. They will continue to drop the ball. Bobo is going to realize this & so are the other teams, which is bad.
South Carolina is a very poor team. A very poor team.
Thank God we were not playing AZ St., LSU, FL, Auburn, or even GA Tech.
I think at this point we are probably about the #7 team in the Nation.
Hate to be so negative, but the game, was what it was. I am watching it again now & it looks worse than the 1st time.
OK, I admit I am an Idiot, but I saw what I saw.

A win is a win but 3 things stand out in this game:
1st - the drops, how many times are the coaches going to allow Tripp C. to drop key passes and remain the starter?
2nd - Willie did not make an adjustment to stop the only dangerous weapon SC had. Why not double cover or put a corner on the TE?
3rd - Bobo’s play calling was terrible and very perdictable. Why can’t we throw the short to intermediate pass to keep a drive alive and move the ball down the field?
I was very disappointed with Bobo and Willie in their lack of creativity and ability to adjust to the game and make the correct adjustments to expose the Gamecocks. Let’s hope CMR chews some butt this week and a different team shows up to play in AZ.

C’mon, guys,
SC didn’t cause Chandler to acquire hands of stone. They didn’t cause the ridiculous penalties. They didn’t make Kris Durham drop a pass in the end zone. And the ‘Cocks weren’t blocking for Stafford (or trying to). Like I said, SC played tough and well, but a little execution from UGA and the game wouldn’t have been as close as it was.

Bobo and CWM were a complete joke today…Bobo was a joke as a player and now as a coach…some things never change. If these guys have to deviate from a predetermined game plan we are toast…Rudy the loud mouth Carpenter will make our secondary look like an average highschool Team next week…CMR needs to get a clue and take the clipboard from Bobo..CWM is simply lost..CJV would have never let this happen…The travel and heat next week will be harsh…100 at game time…we are in trouble folks because Rudy will throw it 40 times to a talented receiver core. If we loose I will be forced to move back to Atlanta…CMR if you are out there please respond to our cries for help!! Yes, this was an ugly win, but remember that this was a win against a team we lost to last year. Yes, Vandy put up 24 against Carolina, but must of those points came as a result of mental errors by the Gamechickens. Today, Carolina played over there heads, and UGA may have been looking ahead to the showdown in the desert next week. The bottom line is the Carolina game is typically one of the sloppiest games we play every year, and you have to take a win whenever you can get it.

It’s the same thing every time. Any fan who is critical of the Dawgs, especially when it’s deserved, is called a “Fair-weather fan,” or said to be “Jumping off the Bandwagon” by the self-proclaimed “Loyal Fans.” Somehow they think a fan can’t be critical of their team. They are the real problem. They perpetuate losing and acceptance of mediocrity. I wish these fans would jump off the “bandwagon.”

USC?UGA is always an ugly display. The Gamecocks may suck, but that doesn’t change the fact that they have a stout and physical “D.” Honestly, I hope that folks think UGA is over-rated. They did what they had to to win an ugly ball game. They certainly squeaked by in some ugly ones in 1980 (including USC). First of all, we won and by December that is all anyone will remember. Flat doesn’t really begin to describe what we all witnessed on offense today by our Dawgs. The thing is that I think it will be okay in the end. Can someone name a team in the BS BCS era that hasn’t had at least one of these ugly wins who then went on to play in the MNC game? Hats off the SC East team; they left it all on the field. The coaches will make the necessary adjustments this week and have the team ready to play in Tempe. If you think I’m crazy, look back to last year’s gift of a win against the Dores and remember what transpired one week later. I am just glad we were able to see where we really are weakest while still getting the W. To all the naysayers; your jealousy is nothing but veiled flattery, so go pound sand.

Denver Dawg,
Obviously I agree with you. Of course I’m happy that UGA won. I take that back: I’m relieved that they won. It’s hard to be happy with all of the errors made by both the coaches and the players. I forgot to mention that on at least two occasions Stafford failed to see that a receiver was wide open. These tyes of mistakes are not a product of the other team’s play. They are a direct consequence of poor peparation and sloppy execution. Pointing out the Dawgs’ shortcomings is not the equivalent of giving up on them.

I think we were beating ourselves today. SC’s D came to play today, but if Tripp and others would have held onto the ball then who knows how many more TD’s we would have amassed. Penalties were killer today and is something that the Dawgs will have to work on before we face ASU and others. Overall, a W is a W. I agree that SC will upset someone this season and my money is on TN, maybe Florida. Florida was not impressive against Miami and have adjustments to make as well. GO DAWGS!

Here is my grade for the Bulldogs today;
Coaching = F What the hell was Coach Martinez thinking using a LB to cover their TE? They kept going to the well and we never adjusted or matched their athlete with someone who could keep up. Why so many penalties?
Receivers = C- If not for the Freshman from SC this would be an F, Durham and Chandler have to catch the ball.
Ofensive Line = D They pretty much got beat up today, if I was Coach SS, I would have them up at 5am doing bear crawls, they have to grow up and get mean.
QB = C Made a few good plays, but missed a blitz that could have been big play and took a sack, also missed some throws.
RB = B+ Did as good as could be expected without any blockers.
Discipline = F Too many penalities which is a lack of discipline.
Secondary = D- Pretty much got whipped today by a “green” QB. Asher played decent and Evans and Miller played better than I thought. Jones and Battle seemed a step too slow and out of position. They better get it together before next week.
DL = C+ Need to find a pass rush.
LB = B We are set here.
Kickers = C We made are FGs, but what is up with Kickoffs, we can’t keep giving teams a short field.

I am concerned about dropping to #3 or 4 after this game…that is a big difference from falling to #2. That would mean that if USC and OU run the table…UGA could still run the table and not get in and I wouldn’t have thought that possible until now. It’s still way too early to worry much about that however. I always thing back to the 2002 Buckeyes team that won about every game ugly and still finished the regular season #2…it’s a shame we have to worry about falling in the polls after a 3-0 start. Winning an SEC road game shouldn’t cost a team a spot in the polls!!

May God Bless Brad Lester for Auburn as he just left the game with what looks like a neck injury.
Bench Chandler. Can’t ever seem to catch a pass in any of the big games. Dropped three pass that hit both is hands. No excuse. Chris Durham dropped a sure touch down. Dropped a long pass last week. Plenty of guys on this team that can catch the ball. Get them on the field and put the the ones that can’t catch on the bench. Won’t win a National Championship playing guys that drop the ball. Bobo called an awful game. Can’t figure out why Moreno was never put back in to return punts after a wonderful punt return to start the game. Come to think of it, not a whole lot of what Georgia did today made since on Offense, Defense, punt and kick returns. How the heck to Vanderbilt look better against SC than Georgia? Moreno did not get enough touches. Stafford kept going deep and with a couple of exceptions was not very accurate on his deep passes. I guess the bottom line is that Georgia won the game and I am happy for that.
They better get more pressure on the Arizona State QB next week and cover the receivers better next week than they did against Carolina or things could get nasty for the Dawgs.

pretty disgusting game this afternoon. I knew we’d all know what kind of team we’ve got by nightfall, and we do. Not very good. 1. We all probably knew losing Jeff Owens was big. Now we definitely know. Absolutley NO pass rush today. Hell, Smelly and Cook looked like John Unitas and John Mackey out there. Small LB’s trying to cover a 6’3-6’4” TE is foolish. I have carried CWM’s banner for the last three years hoping the learning curve would ramp up. I can no longer do so. He is lost. 2. Very little imagaination on offense. Still have not solved the OL problem that has really existed since 2002. Why?? Yes, losing Sturdivent hurt badly, but guys like Chapas who have been in the system for years and still refuse to pick up blitzing CB’s is inexcusable. Why do Stafford and Bobo always seem so hell bent on long passes down the field?? They should review Chris Smelly’s efforts and the way he moved Carolina down the field. Say what you will, when it comes to offense, the Ole Ball Coach is still the champ. He’s just badly undermanned right now. Don’t think he’ll ever have the real talent he needs at Carolina, or it would be just like the old times against the Gators. 3. We’re in deep trouble in the defensive backfield. Cannot imagine what an experienced QB like Rudy Carpenter will do to them next week. Next week could really be ugly. And, no, I don’t think these are issues that can be “fixed” in a week’s practice. I’m just hoping to not be embarrassed. I hope I am wrong, but all the chatter about any type of NC game, etc. should cease at once. We sound foolish. My guess is that this is a 4-5 loss team right now. Can they get better? Don’t know. I don’t think the schedule allows for a lot of on job training this year. On the other hand, many of the problems evident today are systemic, and not the type that can be corrected with a minor adjustment. What was the final count on penalties?? Twenty nine in the first three games?? Not gonna win many championships that way. How many more times do we have to see the DB’s get beat on coverage and have to grab a receiver to prevent a catch?? Then pop up with that goofy look of disbelief on their faces?? I think we should all relax, enjoy the season and games for what they are. There is no championship of any sorts in the cards as this point. And let me say I have been watching the ‘Dogs since 1959, and am truly a “glass half full guy,” but I think we all read way too much into the end of last season and assumed a carryover into this year. Let’s just hope for the best.

Many of you are making the mistake of dismissing the quality of the Carolina team. They have great athletes, as you might expect from a Spurrier team. Don’t forget that GA recruits heavily in SC. We are indeed fortunate at GA that Carolina doesn’t have a crackerjack quarterback. If they ever get a good one, Spurrier has the athletes to win it all. So back off, all you armchair quarterbacks. An ugly win is fine. Sure, I’d prefer to beat Spurrier by three touchdowns. But even one point does the trick. We’re 3 - 0 and the season has just begun. What more could you ask for? On to AZ!!!!!!!

You people have very short memories. Last year, Carolina beats us in a close one and we go on to be discussed for the NC. This year we win the game and everyone thinks the season is over. I may not be the smartest person in the room but I’d say that right there is an improvement over last year.
And, I know we have this huge bandwagon now and all these folks are jumping on it, but are there really that many of you that have no idea about the history of the UGA/SC game? I actually like Carolina and always have (although I hate Granny Clampett Holtz and spurrier) but every year I dread that game because it is the same way, year in and year out.
I will say that idiot Martinez seriously needs to learn to adjust. Or at least NOT adjust when everything is working, as it was in the first quarter and a half (where did the pressure go?!).
Heck, folks say if we had only won the SC game last year we would have been in the NC. OK, wish granted. Next!

Let people underestimate the Dawgs all they want. SC has a very tough D and they were pumped after losing to Vandy. My biggest disappointment was dropped passes; but, the flip-side is that Stafford threw the ball well overall. Let’s have a little optimisum here. If you recall last year we started out the same way in the season with a few young guys on the OL. Well, guess what we’re in about the same boat with the OL and those that have played are at different positions. Even CMR admitted that this years line might be a little worse off than last year.
Same with the defense, the defensive ends were not putting pressure on anyone at this time last and same this year.
My point is, we started out slow last year but ended up a pretty good football team and as long as we improve with each game we should be Okay.

After watching the USC/Ohio game, Georgia is 2nd tier compared to USC. USC is playing the #5 team and wiping the floor with them right now. Well, it was a Conference win and they’re still undefeated. However, they did not look good against a South Carolina team that also lost to Vandy by a touchdown. Alright, so I was wrong, and I wish we had a few adjustments to take care of the TE, but let’s keep this in perspective. It has been a couple of hours now, and I was thinking. If we had scored one touchdown last year, and the score was 19-16, we probably still drop in the polls, and most of you would still have been laying out the “let’s hang WM and MB and CMR” statements. But that was the difference between us playing in the SECCG and possibly the National Championship. Fact is, we won the game this year, at their place. Three games from now, you will all be singing the coaches praises. Yeah, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have ran my mouth after another W. Sorry Dawgs. This is USC, and fact of the matter is, this is always a tough game. The pollsters know that. We were only 7 point favorites, and we pushed.

BANDWAGON?? WTF??
Dawgs played poorly today that fumble saved us
-linebackers play well against the run -Linebackers play poorly against the pass -receivers dropped passes -Martinez does not know how to adjust coverages - 4 man pass rush is ineffective - offensive line is NOT BCS caliber
This was a good test against an average team
WE ARE NOT THERE JUST..so let’s putthe bandwagon in the garage for now..

I just have to take my hat off to Vegas. I was sure the Dawgs would crush the Chickens, but it looks like the point spread was right on. Just glad I did not bet $ on it. Look, this was a good ramp up game, but the season is all about getting better. Last year, we were the best team in the country and lost to these guys. At least we won this year, so we are a step ahead in my book. Go Dawgs!

I’ve been a long time Dawg fan. Today seemed to confirm my pre-seaon fears, though. I hate to admit it, but as others on here have said, we’re really not a number 1 team and never should have been ranked such. I don’t know what it’s going to take from the coaches to drill into our players heads that it’s hard to win games with the number of penalties we seem to rack up. This has to be stopped! Stafford needs to improve and quit throwing so many attempted home runs. Our pass rush has to improve. Our OL has to improve even though they have made great strides since last year. Our play calling has to improve too……it was terrible today!! Watching today’s game, it’s hard to believe that we wouldn’t get beat by Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Florida, just in the SEC. Number 1 team in the nation? No, not hardly. After watching today I would place us around 9th or 10th.

Tx Dawg your correct on your grading. Our kickers don’t have the strong leg however Mimbs had that awesome punt!!! I thought Knowshon had a pretty good game he didn’t have that much room to make any plays. The OL got whipped I agree but were starting 3 true freshman they will mature and get nasty….Stafford in my book gets a D today. Only reason its not an F is that pass to AJ between two defenders….Tripp should never even smell the field the rest of the season!!! That TD pass that Kris bobbled was a tough one to pull in. He has some of the best hands on the team and it was a tough one….
on the defensive side of the ball? Why in the world do we consistently give the WR so much cushion. They can make those 6-10yard passes all day on that coverage….and I agree I don’t understand why we kept putting a linebacker on Jared Cook. Dude is a best!!! How in the world did he get out of the state of GA when he was a star in hs!?!!
Anyways a win is a Win however it looks like were about to drop to number 3….OK is putting an a* whoopin on Washington…
All in all this is week 3 and remember last season we started off slow and got hot. However we won this game instead of losing it last year. This is the game that cost of a SEC Championship Game and possibly a NC!!!!

I have not read the blog yet. My view. Unless we get a pass rush, and an OL power blocking, there will be no MNC. UGA did not do anything between the tackles. If it was not for usc’s inept offense, we could be looking at a loss. I know UGA/ usc games are always close, but this was damn near pitiful. I was prepared for a close game, but both the OL and DL sucked. I am calling them both out right now. I want to see a totaly different game next week. And on a side note, Chandler #86 needs his a* benched. He can’t catch a f!@#@ cold.

Ill take the win anyday.. That being said, our two problems that need to be fixed is our line play on both sides of the ball and the penalties.. Our offense line struggled to make holes and give Stafford enough time and our defensive line did not get pressure all day. The mental letdowns and drops killed too many drives. Chandler had two key drops that stopped drives. Durham dropped a catchable pass in the endzone. Lets just hope we can come back from Arizona St. with a win! I think this may be the best defense we play all year.. Thank God! Go Dawgs.. 3-0

Welcome to SEC football - this is how we play. Every SEC game is equivilent to the Championship and is played like it.
Having said that, I have something else to add. I know its an arm-chair quarterback thing to say but….Martiniez’s schemes are really pretty crappy. Maybe we don’t have the personnel; maybe our players aren’t up to the task. We don’t get after the quarterback enough. With a quarterback like Smelley we went after him only a handful of times to get in his face (each time it rattled him)….

Glad we got the victory. After so many games that were close it felt good to watch a close game…dang near forgot how it felt.
We have GOT to play more inspired, with more energy and passion. We had that from the FLA game last year throughout the bowl game but we seem to have fallen back to the uninspired play (overall).
Again I am happy with the win but we have some work to do before ASU next week!

I’ve said before that I trust CMR to get the Dawgs prepared. I’m no less trusting now. That being said, the team responds to him accordingly. When he appears to be flat and unemotional, they seem to follow suit. No amount of preparation can ensure sharp execution. I’m not saying Richt should run around acting like the village idiot, but trying to be cool doesn’t appear to inspire these guys.
And whether he likes it or not, the national polls are beauty contests, and ugly wins fail to garner votes. There comes a time where simply winning them all isn’t going to be enough to win the NC. As has been pointed out,if Oklahoma gets in front of UGA and wins out, along with USC, then the Dawgs’ potential undefeated season will get them what Auburn got in 2004- an SEC title and a #3 ranking. I want to believe otherwise, but know better.

What’s with all the whining and dire predictions about the season? Did I miss something and we actually lost the game? You people are an embarrassment. Sure, it’s legitimate to point out all the areas that need serious improvement but this was our first real game of the season. Did anyone notice that was a Steve Spurrier team and we WON the game? How about the LB play from Ellerbe and Curran, the +2 turnover margin, and holding an SEC team to 18 yards rushing and 7 points? What about the fact we’re 3-0? Would you prefer we were overconfident going into one of the three biggest games of the season? Give the coaches a chance to make adjustments and use the ugly game to motivate the team. Sheesh.

We won a tough and hard fought game today. No disrespect but some of you need to calm down as the world is not coming to an end. Several have mentioned that South Carolina just seems to play extremely well against us. The thing that concerns me is when SC blitzed and the fullback released without hitting the blitzing DB and/or Stafford not making the adjustment to drop the ball over this DB’s head to the fullback. The other things were the stupid penalties- 11 in all and the officiating they only called 2 holding penalties on SC no wonder we got very little pressure on their QB.

Never posted before on the AJC blog, but thought I would give it a go after this game and what I’ve been reading.
Yeah, it’s easy to say that SC was a few botched plays away from winning, but the Dawgs were a few botched plays from possibly blowing it open. (penalty at the one yard line…dropped pass in the end zone…dropped passes for first downs.)
The SC defense came to play today! It was obvious they were ticked off after being beat by Vanderbilt and felt they had something to prove tonight. Their stats after the first two games were tops in the SEC as well as the country. They are the real deal.
The Dawg defense did wear down in the 2nd half and we HAVE to somehow start getting pressure on the QB, but we did hold SC to 7 points.
Playcalling confidence usually ramps up throughout the year. Our O-line is still very young and inexperienced. We saw what happened last year after a few games under their belt. Searels is the best in the business and they will only get better.
This game seemed to be in the heads of the players. I think they knew it would be tough and we needed to avenge the lost from last year. It was obvious with the penalties and lack of execution.
Are we a #1 or #2 team? We didn’t look it today, but what team that ever wins it all looks that way all year. (Florida against SC in ‘06, LSU against Arkansas last year…)

UGA sucks, but so what, they are lucky as hell and that’s really all that counts. Forget all this nonsense about great recruiting, outstanding coaching, superior athletes, tremendous speed. Luck is all you need. As long as we are lucky, I don’t give a toot that we are a relatively lousy football team. Nobody can beat a really lucky team. The only dang problem is that luck is just too hard to depend on for an entire season.

“we should have done this, we should have done that, we should have played better….”
Those are all things people say that don’t watch this game every year. We NEVER play well against SC, no matter how good we are or how bad they are. When’s the last time we went into a game against them being evenly matched on paper? Not since the Donnan years. This game is played early in the year when all the SC wahoos still believe they are decent and they hate us a lot more than we hate them because we steal their recruits, and they just play with more intensity than we do. Bottom line, that’s it. Just be glad that our running back doesnt fumble, and theirs does. It was the same game last year, except we just picked them off at the end this year.
So, shut up idiots, WE WON THE GAME!

Geez… so much criticism of Martinez… 289 total yards and 7 points; I’m not sure what we expect from this defense.
This is a carbon copy of last year, except WE WON the game. Last year it cost us a chance to play for the championship.
Doesn’t matter if OU jumps us in the polls. If we beat ASU, Tenn, FL, ALA, FL and Auburn, we’ll be just fine. And the SC game is no indicator of whether we’ll do that or not. They always play us this way.

Give USC credit - the Cocks have an excellent defense and a good passing game. But why, oh why, couldn’t the Dawgs put a cover guy on that tight end when the game was on the line? I’ll take a win in Columbia any time, but we’ve got to get a pass rush to go along with our strong run defense. Moreno and Stafford looked sharp and showed leadership. So did the LB corps, except when they had to drop for coverage.

I don’t think that Florida fans have any room to say anything. After all, you were 9-4 last season and look to suffer 1 or more losses this season. And you may very well lose to SC, TN, Alabama, LSU and Arkansas, in addition to losing to UGA. You squeaked by Ole Miss and KY last year and let’s not forget your bowl loss to Michigan. And your win against Miami this year was far from impressive. Every team will have an ugly game once in a while, today was UGA’s. Even the mighty USC (Cali) lost to Stanford last year. But a win is still a win. We made costly mistakes or else we would have had at least 2 or more additional TD’s on the board.

Tech? Better be careful there…while UGA was playing directional schools, Tech has been playing conference games and looking good. New Coach, New QB, players that don’t fit and PJ has them heading in the right direction…UGA is headed for hurt and pain..No way will they beat LSU or Florida…Say hello to the Citrus!

That game was embarrassing to Georgia’s football program. I pay and contribute a lot to our Football program. Our Coaches must put a better product out there or the coaching staff needs to be reevaluated. CMR is paid very well and our team was Manhandled by a joke of a football team. No wonder we don’t get any respect from the College football World. Our Offensive line allowed 3 sacks today and our defense had only 1 . Pathetic! Dawg Fans. we deserve better from our coaches!

i am a huge georgia fan but i somewhat agree with you, talked with a friend from navarre fla. during and after the game and he is a big fan too, but he agreed , we continue to play games like that and we could lose 3 or 4 games..but i think the coaching staff will figure some things out between now and the alabama game, plus we had 6 or 7 kids playing today that were playing in high school last year at this time ,, they’ll get better as the season goes on,,, a few ugly wins early and a week off before tennessee and we will roll, beating spurrier on the road is never an easy task for a georgia team…period and we always struggle with south carolina as there were fourteen players from georgia that played against the dawgs today ,, quite a motivation for those kids…we shall improve or we shall get beat

Well as bad as the Dawgs played( especially in the 1st half) and as bad as the game plan was ( especially on offense), the Dawgs still won so let’s be thankful for that. So let’s focus on the positives. The defense came up big when it needed to, and that’s important especially when you consider that this team’s strength is on offense. It’s a win on the road in the SEC and regardless of what people think the Dawgs SHOULD do against Carolina, the fact of the matter is that this game is always close. It’s a long season folks, and the Dawgs are notorious for finishing strong. Sure if the Dawgs played USC RIGHT NOW, they’d lose. But then again I would have said that about them last year especially after that Tennessee loss. But they came on strong down the stretch when they needed to last year and would have probably beaten the Trojans in the Rose Bowl if they played. So let’s save the knee jerk reactions for when they lose. It’s called playing a tough schedule in a tough conference, something USC wouldn’t no anything about.

Guys, back off the ledge. Is it hard to believe that USC actually has a very good defense? Half the starters are from Georgia and are very good. If they stay healthy, they can win 8-9 games. This was a good win against a tough team.

I will suppose that some of you hacks that use GA or UGA or Dawg in your titles are posers or the type of fans who I wished would save your dime and jump on the Paul Johnson bandwagon (they give free coke and hot dogs at the games). The kneejerk type of jackasses that are now beating the Martinez drum. Are you freakin kidding me!!!!!!!!!! On a day when our O obviously was struggling (against a pretty darn good D, ask any good scribe or student of the game) The game was won by our D and….COACH M!!! I will give you that the stupid penalties have to stop but the FIRE COACH Martinez Bozos…keep plinking your keys and prove to all of us how little you know about football! This is what Champions do. They find a way to win (on the road in the SEC mind you) when things aren’t going so well. All of you who are whining, bickering because it ‘wasn’t perfect” or we didn’t “blow them out” You want beauty then quit watching SEC football and save your TV time for the Miss AMerica Pagent!!! Stomping OSU is going to make USC look even stronger. This, despite the fact that the Buckeyes apparently just aren’t that good. Let’s see, UM gets their #sses handed to them by a ND team that barely beat SDSU. Now OSU, who needed a lot of luck to get by Ohio, is getting trounced, and it’s not an SEC team this time. Looks like a long year for the Big 10- you know the conference bigwigs want Illinois to win the conference about as much as the ACC wanted that GT-Wake Forest title game a couple of years ago.

Tough game…then again it seems that every game with SC is tough. Don’t know what it is, but there it is. Clearly this was probably the best defense we’re likely to face this year - at least their line of scrimmage - and although I wish we’d have done better, I’ll take it.
Reading the yelping going on here one would think that these players and coaches didn’t blow ‘em out just to hurt us…for God’s sake, lay off. You’re embarrassing yourselves with the absolute worst skinnin’ of ignorance imaginable. We’ve got a lot of games to play against some even tougher opponents, so the last thing we need to do is send our guys off with a ‘you sorry mutts, if you don’t start huntin’ better I’m gonna shoot you in the butt’.

Ohio state is the most over-rated team in the history of college football. Every year they get blown out and ever year they are back in the top 5. Southern Cal looks like a number 1 team tonight. Georgia didn’t. THat simple.
No pass rush! It was evident even against Central Michigan. If we had of had a pass rush we would have destroyed that team today. Tim Tebow will take us apart without GA having constant pressure on him. WHere is it going to come from?

I have always hated the BCS system; it is flawed and robs deserving teams from playing in worthwhile bowl games…

Stafford won the game and showed why he will be a number 1 draft choice. Moreno ran hard but the O line needs to step up. Defense was fair, but some poor play calling on both sides of the ball. Spurrier eats up a three man rush, so will Erickson, wake up and pay attention Willie! UGA’s OC and DC did not do a good job today, nor did Richt. How many passes were thrown in this game? I would say about 15 too many! In short, Richt and company were outcoached by Spurrier, again. I hate Spurrier, but if He had this team He would win three BCSNGS! We had good enough athletes to win in spite of the coaching. I thought the team was uninspired and and the tactics were awful. The guys were unprepared and clueless. Worst job of coaching that I have seen since the UT debacle at UCLA. If UGA wants to win it all Richt and company need to get of there asses and go to work. Stafford and Moreno and Green are gamebreakers, get out of the way coaches and let Them win games for You. You did not contribute a damn thing to this win, so shut up and get out of the way.

A beaten down team in the trenches. That what Ga was by the end of this game. I’ll definitely take the win but let me tell you…I think the kids in vegas got this thing right. A 9-3 year is staring us in the face. My only hope was that this was Georgia’s C or D game. Otherwise…9 wins may be a reach.
The #2 team in the country getting beat to #$%^ in the trenches like that is rediculous.
As far as I am concerned…Mimbs the punter should have been the player of the game…although Moreno won the game for us with the little blocking he did get.

For whatever reason we can’t play rock-em sock-em football with SC. They were more physical than GA last year and again this year. We had better skillplayers but we just can’t seem to lineup and beat them down. Either their guys are tougher than our guys or are better coached.
Ga played like a power team against the first two opponents but today we looked like a fast finesse sort of team. Case in point on our next to last possession 3rd and 2 for a 1st down we don’t try to run up the middle we pitch the ball outside to Moreno and he gets whammed. I think our O=line is just to thin and inexperienced.

It was not an ugly game.. It was a defensive battle! Everyone will tell you that, in order to win a championship, you are going to have a few tough victories. Beside that, Steve Spurrier has genuine hate in his heart towards Georgia…did you see his halfhearted handshake at the end of the game? I wouldn’t be surprised if he had the team practicing for the Dawgs before the Vandy game? If he doesn’t retire at the end of this season, I guarantee that it will be going through his mind next year if he loses to Georgia again. Yes he is a fantastic coach, but this isn’t Duke (look back at the ACC competion he faced) And South Carolina ain’t no Florida either!

Kills me all these gators coming here and saying UGA is lucky…
Well I seem to remember a Gator team that beat south carolina 17-16 one recent year after SC missed a field goal. And you call the DAWGS lucky?
Teams that win national championships have to find ways to win the close games. Dawgs cause a fumble. Dawgs make an int…Dawgs made their own way to a win. SC’s defense was tough and you have to give them their due.I think they are going to suprise some folks down the stretch. Will be interesting to see them play the gators.
Where Georgia needs to improve
Pass Rush—-none existent Kicking Game——What the hell is kicking off to the 20 yard line all about? Secondary….need to get it together, you are suppose to be a strength of the team. Special teams….average at best. Coaching…Richt needs to coach like the last half of last season, with passion. Not like the first half of last season, like he was attending a funeral( and thats how he did it today). This team feeds off their coaches emotion. Play Calling….Bobo needs to open up the book. They played it way to safe.
Its a win…an ugly win. But I will take it.

Where is the genius from Ohio State at now? You guys looked real impressive! Some points to ponder. Why are they taking Moreno out so much? He runs the ball one time after the half and they pull him for Samuel? Especially on 3rd down, he creates chaos for defenses more than anybody we’ve had in years, leave him and AJ on the field more. OL needs to grow up quick. Martinez’s soft zone defense is killing us. Why only put Moreno back their for 1 punt return? We needed someone to spark the team and a long punt return could have changed this game. I see OK, MO jumping ahead of us in the polls. Bobo, the play calling today had many Dawg fans scratching their heads. What’s up with running Moreno 3 straight plays right before USCs last possession? Everyone in the stadium was waiting on Moreno including 9 SC defenders in the box. We got to get Green and Moreno more touches. UGA is a much better team than we showed. Hopefully, AZ State gets overconfident before Saturday.

You fans seem to enjoy runnin me down but I will never listen to your suggestions because I am your DC and I know more about coaching than you ever will. You do not how hard it is to prepare a game plan against a powerhouse offense like USC. It is true they cannot run the ball and they had a tight end that was beating my linebackers play after play but I have too much pride to change my game plan that I have worked all week on. And another thing - this is for the guy that keeps writing the same thing in all the blogs - I will never abandon the so called dreaded 3 man rush. The 3 man rush has been used by DCs for as long as I can remember and so what if it is you call it the stupidest play in football and many games re lost as a result of it I will continue using it even if CMR tells me not to because I know more than him too, Do what? Yes I used it on the play before their TD pass. IF YOU REMEMBER IT WAS 3rd and long and they completed a pass for a first down but what would you have me do - blitz the QB and make him throw the ball away. That is not my style and I would never do anything to change my game plan - I would rather lose. Beside I only use it in critical situations such as when the other team needs to complete a long pass. normally rely on my four DL to put pressure on the QB. The fact that we are not getting pressure on the QB is not my fault because I told them to rush the QB ALTHOUGH THEY AR OUTNUMBERED 6 OR 7 TO FOUR. you people expect too much of me just because I am smarter than you. I do not want to hear anymore about the 3 man rush you hear me? ## idiots.

Well first of all a win is a win no matter how ugly and I’ll take it. Sometimes you’re going to win ugly no matter how good you are in reality or how much work needs to be done before you get to where you want to be. I think we still have much work to do … starting with Coach WM. How can this man come up with such great schemes in some games and look like a complete idiot in others? He never made coverage changes in the second half and as a result that monster gamecock tight end (#87)was pretty much having his way with us. Man was he big! That’s going to have to change! Wake up Willie! Trip Chandler reverted back to his early season catching woes of 2007. We need you Trip so let’s get on the stick, son! If it hits your hands please catch it. Our offensive line is going to have to improve quickly now as we get into the meat of our schedule. Come on men let’s man up, stand your ground, and push the d-line back. Finally Stafford is going to have to learn that he can’t chuk it 40 yards downfield every play and that all we have to do is keep those chains moving and score. We don’t have to get all the real estate in one play … although I loved that laser to Green. All in all though things may not be quite as bad as many of us may think … especially considering that we don’t know how much of the playbook CMR used in this game. I’m sure he’s probably holding back some things for Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, and Florida. The offensive line and the reluctance of Martinez to make changes concerns me though. However I think after getting our faces punched a few times today, we’ll all see a much better effort next week against Arizona State. I surely hope so!

Two things hurt Georgia today- dropped passes and penalties. That’s it. Stafford & Moreno played well, the defense (for the most part) played well.
Caught balls would have led to a higher score, and penalties would have ended otherwise-sustained SC drives.

Stafford is 20-4. To suggest that little Joe Cox is better than Stafford is ludicrous! You obviously missed the ball that went through Samuel’s hands, Durham’s drop in the end zone and our TE who couldn’t catch a cold today. We’d better appreciate Stafford this season as it may be his last before playing on Sundays. Do you honestly think Joe Cox can play on Sundays? You probably thought JoeT3 should get his job back too after Stafford took over. We need to appreciate Stafford, but use the best weapons we have more like AJ and Moreno.

quaildawg,
They did the same thing a few years back with A.J. Hawk and that Carpenter kid. The jibbering idiots on TV get hold of something and just don’t let go. They have this erroneous idea that if you’re a LB at OSU you must automatically be Heaven-sent. The best thing to come out of their game tonight is that USC finally put the notion that the Buckeyes are a top-level team to bed. The worst thing? USC gets the credit for doing what several other teams have already done. The media buffoons forget that the SEC has already demonstrated this over and over, and that Ohio embarrassed THE OSU last week even though they lost.
You gotta love this. The Big 10, the ACC, and the Big East all collectively reek this year.

That game sucked so bad I slept through the first quarter and after halftime I flipped over and watched Hogans Heroes. If they are in the top 25 on monday I will be suprised. If we cant protect Stafford why dont we throw 5 yard slants on 3 step drops? Martinez should sell tacos and Bobo should be shot.

Stafford is very inconsistent, he missed about seven deep balls. He still takes sacks when he should throw the ball away, inexcusable! He lost the game to South Carolina last year by himself. Cox is very consistent, not as strong of an arm but consistent!!!

What I get a kick out of is how “fans” are so quick to throw thier team under the bus after a hard fought WIN! For all you folks saying our defense sucked, think about this; UGA gave up ONLY 7 POINTS! The ‘Dawgs started off last year looking much worse than this then found their stride and dominated, eventually finishing #2 in the nation. Defensively this is the first test that UGA has faced this year. I promise the ‘Dawgs will be well practiced and prepared for the game next week at Az. State.
Also, who cares about the rankings right now? Georgia has yet to play the meat of their schedule. Once they get there and if they are able to keep up their winning ways, their stock will rise once again. UGA has nothing to worry about right now with the polls as they are truly inconsequential at the moment. So cheer up ‘Dawg “fans”, the world has not come to an end. If you look up, the sky is still there and it is looking bright.

Matthew, Do you want to put some money on that 50+ points this year against these Jackets? I know we lost today, but at least we played a quality opponent in THE TOUGHEST place to play in college football. No excuses here though! We lost, and a loss is a loss. If you think your “dawgs” can or will beat Southern Cal you are dreaming!!!!! I guarantee you if they do indeed meet in the National Championship game (and by the “dawgs” play today, they WILL NOT) Southern Cal would beat them by at least 30 points minimum!!!!! By the time we meet your mutts in Athens this year, my Jackets will be clicking on all cylinders on offense. I would not be surprised at all if they beat the “dawgs” this year!!!!!

Good God people calm down! I would’ve thought we were beaten by six touchdowns the way some of you people are whining. Damn people it’s just mid September. Sounds like most of you guys need to relax a little and unwind like Ron White does. A 14-7 WIN counts the same on your record as a 56-3 WIN. Let’s see how it all looks at the end of November. I was surprised that we could not run between their tackles. They dominated us in the middle and for the most part contained Moreno. We cannot continue with the penalties. A well coached team does not have this many penalties. We need to work on that. After watching USC whip Ohio State like they did I’m not so sure we’re ready for those guy’s yet. It’s early and hopefully we’ll get better, week by week! We’ve got the talent:just need to do a little “fine tunning!”

Dawgs are so overrated it is ridiculous. You’ve played to patsies, proving only that the bully can beat the little kids at the playground.
Your defense is highly questionable. GSU scored on your D without any problem. Call it your 2nd and third string, but these guys are 4-star recruits. Whatever. Excuses, won’t win against SEC offenses.
Your offense has been able to put up those big numbers with no pressure. Wait until Spurrier (and better SEC defenses) throws unrelenstless blitzes at Stafford and stuffs Moreno in the box. AJ Green will get picked right in front of the fans he screwed over.
Picture this: Stafford and Moreno sitting on the bench with their heads down, when time is running out and the score is:
Carolina 31 Georgia 17

Eric - yeah 20-4 is real inconsistent. We must have watched 2 different games. I saw Samuel let one go through his hands and Durham dropped a long one in the end zone. You need to face the facts that without Stafford this team is average. Also, Joe Cox is not as talented as Logan Gray. Gray is the future if Stafford leaves after this season. Give Stafford the credit he deserves. USC had the 4th ranked defense coming in and Stafford stepped up even after they continued to blitz and hit him. Stafford is a winner.

WTF,
As far as UGA scheduling USC, why don’t you turn the question around? I don’t see them knocking at the Dawgs’ door. Fact is, there’s not enough games in the season to schedule the Condoms and guarantee UGA the necessary home dates to generate revenue. You see, the Dawgs play one game a year on neutral turf, so scheduling is a little tight. And they have to pay to travel to a BCS bowl game as well as the neutral site. They don’t get to save money by playing in their back yard.
As far as USC ducking the Dawgs, the Rose Bowl wouldn’t break the agreement with your Big 10 harem so UGA could come to the Rose. The Sugar Bowl was willing to give up the SEC representative to make that matchup happen, and with just a modicum of arm twisting the Trojans could have gotten the game done, but instead they hid behind those ludicrous conference tie-ins instead of pushing for a real opponent.
I hope UGA doesn’t demoralize Ariz. State too much by taking them to school next week. The Sun Devils are possibly the only team on USC’s schedule capable of putting up a fight. Oh, my bad. I forgot about Stanford. I’m sure you didn’t, though. Still, it must be nice playing in what is essentially a one-team conference.

Eric - your argument has no merit. You bring up a game that was Stafford 2nd or 3rd game as a college player. Did you forget that Joe Cox had a red shirt season? Stafford has matured so much as a player and leader on this team. Has Stafford lived up to all the hype?Probably not, but he is a winner and in the end most will judge him based on his wins and he’s certainly won some big games for us. I hate to say it, but Stafford has very little left too prove in college and most want blame him if he leaves early. Supposedly, the NFL is considering a rookie salary cap after this next draft so don’t be surprised to see several UGA players to include Stafford leave early.

Just thow the football to Mohamed Massaquoi and AJ Green.
As for going PRO, both Matthew Stafford who can throw the football and looks like an NFL Quarterback back there scrambling and running as well already 3 games only after his Sophomore Season and Knowshon Moreno who is only 3 games into his Sophomore Season are both going to go in the 1st 5 Picks of the NFL Draft, if they declare.
Where are our pass rushers ? Don’t have one ? Not a good sign for this schedule. Dannell Ellerbe will be drafted in the 1st few rounds too. There are not that many stars on this team. It is a team. Not 5-Star and 4-Star team, but a team of players every single one of which were ranked in the Top 15 at their position in the nation. And, that, my friends is all it takes in college.
That, and play in a real football conference.
There is no doubt that the nation will report that the UGA South Carolina game was a more interesting, better game, and a game watched more than this crap about the PAC-10 beating the Big 10. Hell, everyone beats the Big 10.
Especially The SEC.
3 Weeks in, The SEC is the Top Conference again.
Kansas’ loss really hurts the Big XII.
The Big XII not only has the single worst record of every single conference against The SEC, but the Big XII also has the absolute worst record in BCS games period.
I get so tired of the hype of the PAC-10 and Big XII by ESPN.
Excuse me, Kansas and Arizona State both Lost. They both play cupcake schedules. They both beat no one.

CC Whitlock, gang member of The Reds gang, who the day before had the ever-loving crap beat out of him by The Bloods at the South Carolina football lunch table while The Bloods yelled at CC Whitlock repeatedly, “What’s up Red” is inserted into the game on 4th down with the clock winding down to end the game, South Carolina gang-member football team losing by a Knowshon Moreno Touchdown. CC Whitlock lines up wide right. He is covered. He breaks off his route. The play continues, and the ball is floated ON 4TH DOWN to where gang member of The Reds CC Whitlock is supposed to be. He broke off the route, covered. On 4th down. South Carolina loses, as the ball floats to the open space where gang member CC Whitlock of The Reds, is supposed to be.

Does not matter WHAT I FIGURED, point is, we won on the road in the SEC. I wish we could take off two weeks from our SEC schedule and play a couple of nobodys like ohio state or the condoms, or Nebraska, or Kansas or any other team that thinks they are all that. If we really wanted a candy a** team we could do it right and play Michigan or those Irish wannabes that control national media. mark richt must be losing his mind. how could u not use your biggest weapon(moreno)in crucial situations?
when the should be running the football they’re passing the dawn football! moreno had only 20 carries.
from the beganing to the end of the game clueless richt let stafford make plays instead of moreno.
vince dooly would have ran moreno until he couldn’t run anymore the way he used hersheal walker back in the day.
when is clueless richt is going to realize that aj green is his best reciever.
we would have scored 28 points against sc had clueless richt given moreno 30 carries and throwed the ball to the best hands in the nation aj green.
when is clueless mark richt going to realize that moreno and aj green is this team only hope to win the se and national championship - when they lose 3 games this season?
when is clueless mark richt going to realize that he need a new defensive coordinator.
if pete carrol or nick saban was the coach of this team we would still be rank #1 and we would blow teams away because they would realize that moreno and aj green is the cornerstone of this team not mattrew stafford.

Last yr at this time, we had lost an ugly game.
This yr we won an ugly game. Celebrate!
We beat Spurrier, again! Yea!
Yesterday I blogged on DawgSports to an interview with Gamecock Man. Read it. Mine was the only post to a good article of work and forethought. In the posting I finished by saying that there was no reason to believe that the first half wouldn’t be like last yr and I wouldn’t be surprised if SC was up at halftime. They were, so no surprise. I also said it would be late in the 3rd qtr and the 4th before we pulled away. So the D from SC was no surprise and accounted for our “average” offensive showing. What I didn’t expect was their offensive success, but have predicted Spurrier would put something together for us as a surprise. Last yr it was a moving defense that could have been caught out of position, but wasn’t because it rattled Staff. It was a big Spurrier gamble. This year it was the timed pass that our defense couldn’t stop until the last. It was another Spurrier gamble and it worked! So, where are the surprises to a knowledgeable fan base? I’m getting impatient at the ignorant part of our fan base. Start reading before you blog about plays and criticize the team and coaches. If you are POed, then learn to hunker down and imagine the fight the players have on their hands. If you want to criticize, ask what the hell was going on at the D sideline! Martinez and Fabris.
Stafford performed well. He didn’t drop the passes, fail to block the pass rush and he didn’t panic. He won the game. That’s what Green used to do. Staff had a couple of good runs as well. That and Green’s catches were the bright spots. Let’s build on that. Two dropped TD passes is all that separates us from feeling high on the win.
ASU will be sky high after seeing how we play at this time of the year. Last yr’s gel will happen, just not on the same schedule some of you expected. Hopefully the smack blogging will subside or be channeled toward a worthy object like Rome. Think of the ASU game as a repeat of SC without the great defense. Oh, and 15 degrees hotter.
Someone got to ESPN with our complaints and it was nice to see the Moreno piece on Gameday. Do you think they did it out of a good conscience and didn’t listen to complaints? I doubt it. They saw your angry blogs and knew it was not “whining” as some putdowns tryed to make you believe. It was a damned uproar of outrage that produced that fairplay piece. And only an uproar will kick Rome in the butt for calling CMR a “pimp”. We have only partially achieved depolitization of college football by ESPN. They need to be stopped from slurring our coach. We are the only ones who can stomp our coach or players. And neither one deserves anything near this kind of high-handed treatment. Rome should be censured by us all.
Every team on our schedule that I have viewed this year can be had. Now we know that we can also. Resolve not to lose is a funny thing. You have to actually believe it before it will happen. We will build from this day forward. We will resolve to go forward together with our team and give them encouragement when they are down. That’s one of our responsibilities as fans. If you can’t then get the hell off our wagon!

Forgot-The penalties showed poor discipline sometimes, but how many of you saw the poor officiating that cost us great plays? Two QB hits that officials imagined were late and use of helmet that was beyond imagination. The SC QB was hit squarely and fairly each time. We got homered. Several other calls were noticed by Verne Lundquist and Blackledge as easily going the other way. If it was that obvious to them and us, then I can’t get too cut up about our effort. Next time we will have better officiating and that will cut down on our sturm and drang.

I don’t mind the criticizing Oledawg.
But, they have to be right. I mean Good Lord. Matthew Stafford was clearly the class of the game. He really performed well. As for South Carolina’s offense you didn’t expect to do as well as they did. They screwed up big time. They broke off their routes CC Whitlock gang member of The Reds beat up by The Bloods the day before the game at his lunch table, The Bloods yelling with each punch to the punk, “What’s up Red.” This break off of his route by CC Whitlock was on a 4th down, for Heavens’ sake. They had 1 lucky play or they don’t score at all. They could not run more than 1 yard at a carry and even then, we forced the fumble. Even Spurrier noted that South Carolina could not get either an interception or **any of the fumbles, all of which UGA recovered.
South Carolina’s offense stunk coming into the game, and we tore up their offense. South Carolina dropped passes. Critical passes. Losing, they had to have those receptions. They were wide open.
That was the worst Officiated Football Game I have ever witnessed. They ultimately got most of the calls correct. But, they called them wrong on the field, and South Carolina knows that.
We won.
On the Road.
To a team who was Consensus No. 24 in all the Polls last week. They lost to a good Vandy team, maybe the only Vandy team to be in a bowl game in the last 26 years. They is no argument that South Carolina has a Defense either. Their special teams are good. They have good coaching. They were at home.
We won.
We had a better offense. Had we thrown the football to AJ Green and Mohamed Massaquoi, we would have scored 3 more Touchdowns. We probably could have kicked a field goal on the opening drive.
They called us for late hit on their Quarterback, which was not. And, did NOT call 1 on them, when they bounced on Matthew Stafford and he limped off with cramps in the calf.
They called us for pass interference when we did not. They called us for holding when their receiver grabbed our Defender, and then fell down to sell the call.
Spurrier will start his 5th season, if he is back next year - which is a big question because of this game. He has beat Coach Richt once.
We got revenge for that one loss.
After we dispose of pretender Arizona State who beat no one last year and no one this year either, we get revenge for the other loss.

Kudos to Mimbs! Not since the late 60s have I seen such a kick when Spike Jones hit a similar kick for over 80 yds. Special teams did an all around good job, but it looked like some signals got crossed by the coaches.
Anyway, thanks for the memory, Mimbs.

Mimbs had the 1 bad punt to begin the season, and since has been the class of College Football as Punter. I’d say standing 4 feet deep in your own end zone and punting to South Carolina’s 9-yard line with the clock running out that the Offense could not gain the 1st down on to run out ourselves, that that was critical. Yeah.
But, we did not kick-off well again. And, we did not do well on stopping their kick-off returns as a result. We also did not have kick-off returns.
We go through the motions on punts and put no pressure. When they bounce their snap twice to their punter, we should be there. We go through the motions on extra points, standing their looking good and doing nothing. We get no pressure on anything beyond their lines, on special teams or on Defense. For the bragging I gave Logan Gray for letting one go over his head on a punt that went in for a touch-back last week, this week it went side-ways and pinned us at our 3-yard line. No, I would not agree that our Special Teams were good Oledawg.
We have now played 75 players the 1st 3 games. We play 3- deep at every position and 4-deep at as many positions as our opponents play 2-deep.
We haven’t had a pass reception all season long by any running back, except Knowshon Moreno, until Richard Samuel - who blew a TD catch - made two 5-yard receptions today.
How in the hell can officials call a holding penalty on South Carolina, a pass interference AND a block in the back on the return on a would-have-been interception, and (1) give the ball to South Carolina and (2) give us the penalty for 15-yards ? Now, they got the call right, ultimately. Was this when Coach Richt called the time-out to help the officials ? But, that shows the total stupidity of these SEC “Officials.” They were paid off.
They had to stop the game so much that it had no flow to the game. Thank God for the replay booth, or we might truly have lost this game.
In the old days, we would have.
And, all been in here saying we were jobbed.

Hey, the Ohio State Buckeyes. where are you?
(crickets)
At least we don’t have to watch yet another episode of media-anointed Ohio State waltzing through another cupcake Big 10 schedule (with out-of conference games against FCS opponents) only to be destroyed by a real team. The Buckeyes got their annual dose of humiliation out of the way early. Looks like Penn State may be the heir apparent. No other Big Ten team impresses me a bit (Illinois? Wisconsin?).
PAC-10 has one great team and nine mediocre ones. ASU lost to UNLV looking forward to next week’s Georgia game. Washington was annihilated by Oklahoma, Stanford lost, Cal lost to Maryland, UCLA was crushed by BYU, etc. etc.
Georgia’s got some issues—no pass rush, DBs playing out of position, lack of execution on offense (especially in the middle of the OL). Tripp Chandler cost us two or three first downs with dropped passes. Richard Samuel didn’t make a TD play when he could have put the game out of reach. WAY too many penalties. And kick coverage remains a concern. But close games help you get better, and this one was, indeed, a “W,” as Coach Richt said. A road win against an SEC-East rival is nothing to take for granted. Every great team has a few ugly wins (LSU last year even lost a couple of close ones, and UF beat this same South Carolina team 17-16 in 2006 on the way to their national title). You take ‘em, use ‘em to get better and move on.
ASU is next. Hopefully, we’ll be ready.

BuLLdawg- Its nice to be on here with a knowledgeable game man. I don’t mind criticism either, it’s just the ignorant criticism that gets to me.
I really shouldn’t be speaking of ignorance either because there are decades I have forgotten. But that’s old brain farts, not ignorance. The memories that I retain are sufficient to last the short time that remains. Bill Stanfil dumping Spurrier for Spurrier’s only loss in his Heisman year. Jake Scott was big with his record-setting interceptions, many at FU’s expense.
You youngsters need to hear some of the old off-the-field stories involving Jake Scott. He had been in the service before coming back to college at UGA so he was a little older than most players. One of the things that didn’t suit him about Dooley’s rules was curfew which he broke as often as he could and got away with a few. Dooley’s habit as an early morning riser didn’t change after wins. On Sunday mornings he met the AJC truck delivery of papers in downtown Athens. One Sunday after a hard fought game he was there at 5:00AM picking up his paper when who did he see heading back to the dorm?-Jake Scott walking across the square. He was the most surprised football player ever when Dooley sat him down on suspension for breaking curfew. He was paranoid for the remainder of the season because he couldn’t figure out how anyone knew.

Jake Scott is one of my friends. I talk with him a lot. He is really mellow now, and I tell him that the only reason why he isn’t already in both Hall of Fames, College and PRO is because he needs to speak up more. Be more available. I see Jake as mellowing now. He lives here in Hot Lanta, now, you know ? Jake is Super Bowl MVP. He played very well in 3 Super Bowls actually. He told me he played in Canada. I guess I can be honest and say somehow now, I didn’t remember that. Maybe they hold that against him, Jake offered to me. I told him. No. It’s not showing up the Super Bowl with all the other Super Bowl MVPs. Stuff like that. I really like Jake. He truly is a good guy nowadays. I think we all have things in our past. Save Jesus.
I remember when he was not allowed to play by Vince. Jake still has the record all-time at UGA for interceptions and returns of them. Miami Dolphins never go undefeated for the only team ever, without him. Number 13 earned Consensus 1st Team All-America for UGA. Dooley was undefeated and won 3 National Championships for UGA, listed in the Official NCAA College Football Records’ Book. Jake Scott has 1 of those. 1968. Undefeated Regular Season. I love reading these Tech homers say they have 6 NC, then denying UGA has 6 as well by the same exact polls who ranked Georgia Tech with 6 in the Official NCAA Football Records’ Book. Tech, of course, has NEVER won an AP Poll National Championship for Tech, UGA has.
Alabama is another game you mentioned from the RR tracks in the cemetery. We sat side-by-side for that game Oledawg. Do we know each other ? Did you live at Rivermill or Russell Hall ?
That was 1976.
21-0.
We left the tracks and went into the stadium at the end of the game. I walked into the locker room and Matt Robinson was who all the writers flocked to. I went in with them. Did they think I was a writer ? Maybe I am. Anyway, he hung up his No. 17 Jersey to the hook in his locker, and it fell to the floor. I said, if he doesn’t want it, I do.
Matt has tried to buy it several times through the years, through a mutual friend Stewardess for Delta. I love her. Don’t know about Matt; she never told me.
Some of my fondest memories of being a small boy are watching Fran Tarkenton fill the air with balls in Athens on Fall days with my dear old dad, who had season tickets before I did. Those afternoons left an impression on a 7-year old because my dad would tell me that that just wasn’t done to fill the air with thrown footballs. I was just amazed at Fran.
But, Matt’s my hero for the Alabama thrashing he alone administered ‘Tween The Hedges. Baxter Street will never be the same as that hallowed night (And, frankly the night before the game when no one could sleep.)

I’m sure the Dawgs will drop in the polls this week. I really don’t care. The Dawgs need to stay focised on winning the SEC East followed by the SEC. Everything else will take care of itself.
Coach Bobo. PLEASE FEED THE GREEN!!! A. J. Green is a human highlight film. He’s making plays in double coverage He’s coming back to ball. He makes spectacular one-handed grabs. Most importantly, HE DOESN’T DROP PASSES.
FEED THE GREEN!!
FEED THE GREEN!!

After all, if you don’t feed the green, it withers. No one likes those brown spots. In this case, those brown spots represent a lack of a passing game.

DROPPING IN THE POLLS
Problems this year that must be corrected:
1) O line can’t run block; 2) Corners can’t cover; 3) D Line wilts in second half; 4) Penalties; 5) Dropped passes; and 6) Lack of preparation by coaching staff.
We’re a long way away from how finished last year. Really disappointing.

Is it just me or does BoBo seem to fall into the trap of trying to be more Spurrier than Spurrier when we play SC? He seems to always try the cute way or go for it all in one play. We have the tools to wear them down but he insist on gimmicks.

We have three real problem areas that must be addressed if we hope to continue winning. The first is DE, unless we can find a pass rush without the blitz we are in trouble. The second is OL, this group just does not have what it takes to play with the big boys. The third is TE, we someone to step up and play (catch the ball).

First & Foremost, I will say this once again, If you are not a dawg fan, blog your crap on your own blog site. No real true dawg fan cares what your opinion of our team is. Now, if you are a true dawg fan, you will accept this for what it was, it was an ugly win, but still a win. You bandwaggoners need to just get off now because you are not the true red and black. It amazes me how short minded or short some peoples memory are about the dawgs. We started slow last year, got in a little trouble and then came on like gang busters in the end. I played football my whole life and I know for a fact how challenging each game is. You guys seemed to forgot that SC had to play also. They where not going to let us come to there home, lay done and roll over them. The SEC is without a doubt the toughest coneference there is and on ANY given saturday, anybody can be upset. Now, all you haters who think they know everything, if your where that good, then you would be the head coach, but since you are not and can hide behind your keyboard,,,,just shut your pie hole and let’s see what happens the rest of the way. All you true dawg fans, hang in there brothers, we will get through this and come out for the better from this.

Nobody is going to go undefeated in the SEC. Alabama, Florida, and Auburn’s defense is as good as South Carolina and Bama and Florida’s offense is definetely better. Georgia will lose as will Bama, Florida, LSU, and Auburn, and anyone else still undefeated in the SEC. The league is too tough no matter how good some people on this board think Georgia is.

I would have much preferred a 42-7 ballgame but let me say this. Last year the dawgs lost to SC and much of the Bulldowg nation still thought that UGA still should have played for the national championship! This is the SEC people. Everybody needs to settle down, this is a good coaching staff. Remember last year? In 1980, Dawgs beat USuCks 13-10 at home. You can’t blow everyone out. Remember we will get everyone’s A game, we have a giant number 2 on our back. The thing to remember here is this is the SEC anybody can lose, and we went on the road and played a well coached team and left with a win.

It was net a by-in-large a poorly played game from a superior team. If our UGA was an eight cylinder vehicle, you’d might say it was running on 4 1/2 cylinders. Just enough to keep the vehicle moving. There is no greater way to ruin any momentum than to have 100+ yards of penalities. Intermediate passes must be thrown for us to succeed against a strong pressing defense. Our offensive lineman looked confused most of the afternoon as did our blocking backs. Not throwing quick slant patterns allowing SC to stunt the entire afternoon. They certainly threw their share of 7-8 passes and obtained first downs. As far as stunting, either Martinez becomes convinced that we need to stunt and stunt often or we could easily lose 4-5 games this year. Not attempting to block punts on special teams drives me crazy! What are we thinking? Give their punting all the time in the world unhindered? And, please kick the football in endzone and make our opponents start from their own twenty rather than their 28+! No more we will stop them on a high kick at the 10! Moreno was tough as usual and so was AJ Green. Boy, was the south end hot at the Brice Williams stadium yesterday.

At what point do the coaches realize that they need to make an adjustment. Seeing SC continue to exploit the linebackers inability to cover a wide receiver is inexcusable. Also, when did Stafford become a great option as a runner. It worked early but after a couple of times SC figured it out and UGA continued to run it. UGA’s offensive line was exploited today. UGA’s inability to catch was exploited today. UGA’s poor coaching was exploited today. UGA’s inability to rush the passer was exploited today. This was a game that Stafford should have made a statement in. I didn’t see it. Great arm. But something is lacking.

Do you ignorant people not realize that a year ago we lost to the cocks. You fools said that the season was over after that. Correct me if I am wrong but I think we turned the season around last year and did pretty well. Everyone wanted to fire Martinez last year, me being one of them. You have got to have faith in the coaching staff that they will get things patched up. We have a very young team. Our most athletic wide receiver is a true freshman. If you remember what coach Richt said last year, we will get better as the year goes along. This should be the same motto this year. I believe this will happen. Arizona State lost to that powehouse UNLV last night. Do you think they have bigger problems than we do? Last year at this time we were 1-1 and pretty upset. This year we are 3-0 and 1-0 and leading the SEC, the greatest conference in the nation. We will get better as the weeks progress and you haters will be back saying we are awesome. I can see it now when we stomp the Gayturds you people will come out and say we knew we had it all along. Until then keep the faith that the best coach in the country will get things rolling.

I feel like the officiating played a part in the performance of both UGA and usc. The first quarter was trying with the play clock malfunction. It seemed like it zapped the intensity and adrenline of both teams. Actually taking the entire half for both teams to get in a groove. I posted last night , I knew the game would be close; at least UGA scored a touchdown this game. I am concerned with the pass rush. It exposed the DBs. No disrespect to Smelley, but 270 passing yrds. thats tough to take. It wasn’t Tebow or Carpenter… OL struggled the whole game, I believe that’s why Bobo, threw the ball three consecutive plays on that drive late in the game. I thought Stafford played decent. He missed a couple of throws by mere inches. The only negative I really saw was the two recievers that were wide open one on a go route that would have been an easy six. I don’t see him leaving early. He showed me today that he needs a little more expierience. He does look like the leader of the offense though. That QB keeper for 30 yrds. was a beauty. You will see alot of that the rest of the year if defences keep fearing Knowshon. A win is a win no matter how ugly, especially between UGA and usc. That’s why I think it’s funny that the haters are so UGA is not a #1 team, they will never win a MNC, They suck, and yadda, yadda, yadda. It’s apparent they don’t know enough about either UGA or usc to understand how this series runs. It has been close just about every game, even before SOS came to usc.

The game yesterday at South Carolina just shows how hard it is to win an SEC championship. In the SEC it’s a war every week. I bet if you could ask Fla. and LSU players (who won the NC the last two years,) they would tell you the win at the dome for the SEC title was much tougher than beating Ohio St. SEC football is still king, no matter what ESPN says!!!

I agree with a poster ealier, Green and Massaquoi, need to get the vast majority of the passes. Maybe work Moore and Troupe, but definately Green and Massaquoi. Has MoMass dropped a pass this year? Is this the same guy? He has really stepped up his game so far this year. That deep pass on the sideline in the first half ( was incompleted ) was beautiful. Just inches from getting a foot down.

To all of you who are now on suicide watch and ready to mail-in the season, here’s a couple of points to ponder… 1) last year we lost this game, went on to lose, REAL ugly to UT and finished #2 in the polls. 2) Think of how many players SC has on their roster from the state of Georgia. This was their NC game. Think emotion doesn’t play into it just a little?? (look at our roster and last year’s results against UF). Love him or hate him, Spurrier can still coach. 3) CMR and WM are still the same two guys that “made adjustments” last year and took us on that memorable run after the UT loss (and oh-yea, that UGLY win against Vandy). My point is this - take a deep breath and hang on for the ride. Every NC team in recent history has had at least one UGLY win. I think it says as much about our resolve, grit and determination to go into a hostile environment, against a desperate team, play UGLY and win as it does about our inability to cover a tight end. GO DAWGS!!

Georgia did not look very impressive but I will give them the benefit of the doubt since they usually struggle against USC. The one thing I know is if they play like that against Ala., LSU, Fla., or Auburn they will get beat. Also where is Roswell Ed this morning, his offense was very impressive. They will get it handed to them next week if they do not plat a lot better. As for my Vols we played better but not great. I think one of two things happen next week against the Gators. I think we show up and we pull the upset, or make it very close, or we will get our a** handed to us again. Regardless of who your team is next week is a great week to be an SEC fan. Check out the lineup. 11:30 Alabama at Arkansas on Raycom, 2:30 Florida at UT on CBS, 6:45 LSU at Auburn on ESPN , 7:00 UGA at ASU on ABC

The sun did rise in the East this morning! I was disappointed in many aspects of the Dawgs’ performance yesterday; however, I think that Coach Richt and his staff have proven over the years that they and the team will improve over the course of the season. I refuse to be a fair weather fan!

you dogs are some lucky folks this morning. If USC had even some semblance of an offense UGA would have lost the game. Watch out next week…AZ State is not happy about losing to UNLV—and they have an offense. You NC talkin dogs better re-evaluate your smack because you ain’t even in the NC cvonversation with yesterdays display of mediocrity. Your offensive line was particularly exposed…wait until LSU’s D line gets in your collective faces—not to mention Bama, Auburn and ofcourse UF. Play every game like yesterday and you’ll lose at least 4 games…take it to the bank. NOVEMBER 1 in J’ville….GATORS 48 puppies 17

OK GA, the thing that scares me the most about UGA this season is MIKE BOBO, the offensive sets, formation, and plays are straight out of my highschool playbook! GA will not stay undefeated this season and it’s because of offensive predictability! Richt had better open up the offense and BOBO just doesn’t have what it takes to develop a complex scheme!

Chip: After watching USC’s Cook create the obvious matchup problems for the Dawg’s Defense - then watching Tripp Chandler struggle again - it left me asking: where is Aron White? That said, I’m off to the Valley of the Sun this week for the ASU game, and I have some advice for Coach Bobo: spread it out with one back sets, lots of quick passes to give the young O-line a break and set-up the run with the pass. Coack Martinez: let’s see Cornelius Washington and some more inventive blitz schemes. GO DAWGS!!

Anyone who expected a blowout against South Carolina was dreaming. The Gamecocks have a very good team and a defense that is as fast as anyone in the SEC. Once their quarterbacks settle in, they are going to cause nightmares for fans of other teams, who blogged on here to poke fun at UGA. I was unhappy with the number of penalties, the dropped passes and calls that went against us, but I was happy to wake up Sunday morning with a win. Go Dawgs!

Well, the Dawgs made a fool out of me (again). I expected a UGA blow-out; instead, a determined USC made it a war. Nevertheless, Spurrier can’t be anything other than frustrated with another tantalizing close loss. He hates to lose. A win is still a win, and a “moral victory” is still a loss. And most importantly, it was an SEC win within the East Division for the Dawgs. So, everyone take a deep breath and relax.

Oh, yeah, that’s right Phillip Fulmer for the 7th Consecutive Season and Counting is ranked worse than Coach Richt. That’s because the vols are not ranked.

UGA’s offense is pathetic. How can a team with all the media hype UGA has received score only one TD ? This offense is third rate. Yet the announcers just marvel at how far Stafford can throw the ball. He could’nt hit the ocean. The South Carolina defense revealed all the warts that the UGA pig has. The UGA defensive line was in slow motion. The game was saved only by the UGA secondary which is the only part of this team that is of nat champ quality.

I can’t wait for TrailerNation to start telling us how, after this years RECRUITING’ class, UGA is going to maul SC in Athens next year. I know its just going to be a rout. The fact is that UGA will never beat SC by more than 7 as long as Spurrier is alive. You may beat FL by 30 but you won’t beat SC by more that 7. I can’t wait to get Stafford and Moreno and King in the backfield at the same time so that Vance Walker can tackle them all at once.

Just win. Win by 7, by 10, by 14, win 3-2 (Auburn), win on a last second field goal or interception…does it matter? Dawgs are 3-0, and I don’t care where the expert pollsters place them this week because it doesn’t matter. One more win, and one step closer to the real goal at hand: The SEC Championship. If UGA runs the table against SEC teams this year, but only wins each game by 1 point, will we be disappointed and griping on this blog?? No. Just win the game.

Our main problem won’t be dropping in the AP or Coach’s poll, it will be how bad our strength of schedule is dropping. Tennessee’s loss to UCLA looks even worse now that BYU put up the big number against the Bruins and UNLV goes and beats Arizona State last night. That was going to be a win against a top 20 team next week, but now it will be just another win against a bad PAC 10 team. South Carolina’s win would have been much better had they beat Vandy last week. We have to have the teams that we are playing late in the season to continue to win, but that is hard now that the SEC schedule is coming up for us all.

This is the same old March Richt and Wille Martinez. I hoped that the 2nd half of last season was a new start, but clearly it was a deviation from the mean.
I previously said we would never win a NC under Richt, but he shocked me halfway through last season when he changed into a completely different coach. I didn’t think it waas possible. AND it wasn’t. I was fooled. This is the same Richt that will never win a NC. Something is flawed with his leadership skills, the talent is there. I have always said and never stopped saying that Willie Martinez sucks a$s and should have been fired a long time ago. Quit fooling yourselves, SC’s poor offense is what made our defense look good, H3ll, our defense even managed to make their bad offense look great at times. PATHETIC.

Well it just goes to prove the old adage that USC east plays it’t best against UGA year in and out. If they played that way every game, they would be world beaters. Has anyone noticed all the state of Georgia players on the SC team? Huge quantity. A D lineman made a big hit for SC and the announcer said he was from Augusta, my brother not paying much attention, he is a Falcon fan please forgive him, said look another Dawg from Augusta, our home. I said nope, another Georgia guy that is playing his heart out against the state team where he grew up. Case in point, Jasper Brinkley, Thomson Georgia High School football legend.
Congradts to the gamecocks, you guys played a heck of a game. I will take the win though. Looking forward to renewing the rivalry next year. Although if you live in Augusta, it never really goes away.

If there is an award for team of the week, it needs to go to the SC defense. Not only because they shut down both UGA Heisman trophy winners made it look easy. They deserve the award because of the time they spend on the field in 95 degree heat. What an example of superb conditioning.

Little has been said about the Dawgs penalties, which were early, often and unnecessary, 90% of them came against the defense. If UGA expects to continue the march to the NC, the penalties have to be reduced significantly. I understand playing aggressive, but come on. Most successful teams are disciplined enough not to commit that many in a game. Against a better team, they may have made the difference between winning and losing. Several times, a penalty kept an SC drive going. Thankfully, the athleticism of the defense was able to overcome them. Go Dawgs!!!

You armchair quarterbacks need to shut up and know what being in the SEC is all about….winning the close ones!! Any week can be a loss…as SC found out at Vandy last week. SC has a good team and a good coach and diehard fans that want to believe every week that their team will win. Be more critical about what you know and not just an opinion…and lay off the TEAM….they will get it done. Think…. we lost to SC last year and still finished #2 in the nation. Georgia’s got THE toughest schedule in the nation. Sturdivant and Owens out for the year and hopefully Southerland will be back soon. This game showed the coaches exactly what the team needs to work on. When you practice against your on team or play against less competitive teams it’s hard to gauge. When playing a more talented team it exposes those areas that need improvement/correcting.
I’ve always fully supported the Dawgs and just because it was a close game I’m not about to stop. As long as we do improve we will be alright.
I do think that CMR needs to get a littly more animated on the sidelines like he did last year. It’s time for the players to have fun playing the game. When they’re having fun they seem to play better.

Look, if some fans, myself included, are a little disturbed with the Dawgs performance it does not mean we are fair weather fans. I graduated from UGA and contribute to the school every year. I never considered going anywhere else. I’m as happy as anyone that we got the win yesterday. Am I happy with how we won? No. That doesn’t mean I am any less of a fan. I just happen to believe the Dawgs are better than they showed. Is it so wrong to point out deficiencies that need to be addressed? I doubt it, since Mark Richt isn’t reading this blog for coaching pointers. It’s just an honest opinion that some other fans don’t agree with. I’m not calling for Willie Martinez, Mike Bobo,or Richt to be fired. I simply think that UGA didn’t play well.

Where do people get this notion that you have to beat everyone on your schedule by 30 points to be a national champion? This attitude is especially perplexing coming off a year in which a two loss team won the BCS title. It couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m not saying Georgia is going to win it all this year, but if they do it was never going to be easy. Some of you need to get your head out of the clouds and adjust your expectations. Georgia won yesterday and that is all that should matter. Mistakes were made but there is time to correct them. It is a very long season.

The defense and WM gave up 7 points! Too many pass yds in the second half. Real problem is QB pressure.
Don’t worry too much about the offense. This SC defense is very good. OL needs to get grow up.

Gamecock Henry,
You and Gamecock Chrissy are two peas in a pod: you are the same insufferable boors that you were before losing. Is it so bad at SC that you have sunk to the level of GT fans, i.e. you put stock in “moral” victories? Those don’t count in the standings. I guess since you can’t beat a top 5 team moral wins are the best you can hope for. Whether it was by 7 or by 70 you guys still lost (again). Hope your sofa is comfortable during bowl season so you can rest comfortably watching UGA, Vanderbilt, et al, playing while you take solace in the fact that the ‘Cocks played everybody close but still lost. How does it feel to be pulling up the rear of the SEC East? You see, UGA doesn’t know about that since they’ve never been in that situation, at least not since the forward pass was introduced. Have fun down in the cellar.

I hoped that beating ASU would get the Dawgs a little love in the polls. UNLV ruined that. If UGA beats them now, it will mean nothing to the voters. They’ll just point out that the Sun Devils couldn’t beat a bad MWC team at home (the Rebels were 2-10 last year, and the year before). Thanks for nothing, ASU. Now it looks like Oregon is the only team with a chance to beat the Condoms. And with Oklahoma now in front of the Dawgs, we have to hope that Mizzou can take the Sooners out. Of course, if that happens the Tigers will probably jump in front of UGA, too. We might have to settle for the SEC title alone if Oklahoma and USC run the table. I know it’s a long season, but the Dawgs were at one time in control of their own destiny. Now they’re reduced to hoping for upsets. The farther the season progresses the harder it will be to make headway in the polls, no matter who UGA beats. Lest we forget, the Sooners and the Trojans are poll pets. An undefeated season and an SEC championship would be nice, but it would be a lot better if we could play for the BCS title.

Going to #3 ain’t crap. What is crap is letting Jim Rome get away with insulting a college coach by calling CMR a “pimp”. Does anyone watch him? If you do, then please post his advertisers in order that we can let them know how we feel about his political comments in college ball. I went by ESPN looking for my weather channel last week when I noticed a UGA helmet. I stopped and heard him for the first time in over two yrs so I heard the remark. He went off on the mild remark CMR made about ESPN missing the boat by not showing the Moreno clip. It was bad enough that they slighted a player, now our coaches are fair game for slurs. If you are waiting for this to go away, it won’t. It impacts our recruiting and our team. I realize that it stuns you, but this is not some innuendo he uttered. I’m not used to that happening to any coach. Others on these blogs have heard anti CMR remarks for some time from Rome. I’m only familiar with what I heard last week and it was denigrating to players ,CMR and UGA.
Please post advertisers daily where we can catch it on any blog we read. Thanks.

Half the top 10 teams are from the Southeastern Conference.
Georgia is the first preseason No. 1 to drop to 3rd after starting 3-0 since Oklahoma in 1985.
This after being the first preseason #1 to fall from the top spot since UF in 1994.
The fact that the polls did this to Oklahoma before gives the Dawgs a little hope, I guess. The Sooners ended up #1 that year.

Oledawg,
I emailed Jim Rome last week and CC’ed the ESPN ombudsman. I doubt anything changes, but we can’t let this guy get by with comments like that. It denigrates the entire University. I encourage everyone to email ESPN’s ombudsman (skip emailing Rome himself; he’ll just delete it and move on). I know Rome is just an ESPN hatchet man, but they need to know he’s overstepped the limits. Whatever Richt’s shortcomings are, there is no questioning his integrity.
I also encourage Dawg fans to get their college sports news from FOX as much as possible. I realize it’s impossible for FOX to match ESPN’s coverage, but they are at least fair, and you won’t have to watch Lou Holtz give another one of his spit showers while lisping his way through another biased, inane, and factually incorrect commentary. Not to mention Mark May and his smug assertions about the strength of the Big 10, or that @ss-wipe Chris Fowler, who ought to be sent back to covering the X Games, whatever that is.

And maybe somebody can explain how FSU, apparently trying to win the Southern Conference of the FCS, moves up and into the rankings after taking out mighty Western Carolina and Chattanooga (combined record of 2-4), yet UGA loses poll votes for beating Ga. Southern, which may actually compete for the FCS title. It’s this kind of hypocritical voting that costs the polls their credibility. It’s farcical to think that FSU has proven anything since thay have yet to play a FBS team.
I take back my laments about UGA not impressing the polls. It’s clear that nothing the Dawgs do will earn their respect.

I feel better about the Dawgs than I did last night. It just seems that some of the coaches and players are required to check Their brains at the stadium gate every time They play the gamecocks. Dropped passes and a penalty cost the Dawgs at lest two and possibly three touchdowns. I think Tripp will get it back, he dropped passes early last year but was a good weapon by mid-season. Durham has dropped a catchable ball in the last two games, and He is supposed to have good hands, a possesion reciever. He needs to get His head in the game. Does anyone know what was going on between CWM and CJF on the sidelines? Must have been the wrong people on the field for the punt.

Don’t blame the polls when you play like cr@p. USC and OU look like far superior teams than UGA, and they’ll be big favorites to run the table. Looks like the Dogs should start studying film of Eastern Carolina if they want to prepare for their big bowl game THIS year. Based on their performance yesterday, they might even be underdawgs in that one.

It’s obvious UGA has to play a lot better than they did yesterday…but a win in Columbia is what it typically is…ugly with a sigh of relief.
As far as NC chances go…I really can’t see USC or OU slipping along the way. That will be our BCS championship game even if UGA wins out…which wasn’t going to happen anyway. Just forget about the polls for now.

I would have liked to see the DAWGS blow out South Carolina and I especially hated the stupid penalties!
Just be reminded of this… In 1980 Georgia only beat South Carolina 13-10 and that was more than halfway through the season and they still won the National Championship!
They have a lot to fix but I believe in Coach Richt to get it done.

UGA is #!!!! We are 3-0. The USC Trojans are merely 2-0. We could beat them by at least 4 touchdowns and that is after we spot them a couple. OSU, like Virgina was a little boy scout club with scant talent. UGA is ‘da men’s club’. We have a better offense, a better defense, better special teams, better coaches, better fans and better cheerleaders than the USC Trojans. They have more connections with powerful sports journalists. That is the only reason they are rated #1 and we are not. Furthermore, we’re in the SEC and they are not. Look at their whimpy little PAC-10 schedule. Now I ask, who is the better team? (Please don’t offer honest replies.)

Can we establish a rule for this blog that no one is allowed to call for a coach to fired after, 1) the team wins the game and 2) the defense gives up only 7 points in same game?
Is that too much to ask?

Ok, so we have played 3 ballgames and have gotten the wins we wanted. Now it’s time to predict the outcome of the next game. To qualify for participation, all participants must cite the winner and the predicted score for the game, Georgia vs. Arizona State. As the PerfectPredictor, I predict that our beloved Georgia Bulldogs will defeat the Arizona State SunDevils by a score of 2-0. We get a saftey and they get nothing. Our offense will continue to be horrible. All rabid dawg fans please note that I did predict a win. Pay no attention to the predicted score and don’t let my perfect prediction affect your own. PerfectPredictor, It’s possible that your prediction overstates the ability of the Georgia offense. I think the offensive score for the Dawgs will be lower. It is impossible to say how many points the SunDevils will score on the Georgia defense. It depends on how porous they choose to be. It is enough to say that UGA will have a very porous defense. Since I must cite a score, how about 44-0 with the advantage going to Arizona State.

This game was an ugly game. I was a little sissapointed in the execution of our plays. I agree that the Dawgs should have pasted USC. Poor execution on offense and defense, is the reason why we had SC hang around on us. lets start with the offense first….it all boils down to NOT controling the line of scrimmage. There was hardly anything rembling anything close to pass blocking or even worse no run blocking for Moreno, King, Samuel. The Dawgs need to start knocking the defensive line on its tail if this offense is ever expected to go anywhere. On defense, we need a better and much more consistant pass rush. The defensive line needs to find a way to get into the oppostions backfield, put some heat on the QB and Tail back. Perhaps even come up with some kind of blitz packages to offset the non exsisitant pass rush at various times. The defense needs to devise better pass coverages than what was on display Saturday. I believe the player of the game should go to our punter (MIMBS). It appeared our defense let SC come right back down the field to eventually put the Dawgs in the proverbial corner and pull out a miracle.
I believe in our coaches and our players. The Dawgs are a young team still, but time is becomming critical with better and more skilled opposition looming ahead. It’s time to hunker down Dawgs

OrlandoDawg, What you propose to solve some of these issues is entirely true, but our opponents are working to do precisely what you suggest and with at least the same amount of enthusiam, believe the same as you. Sometimes, like yesterday, you face an opponent that is very difficult to block because the athlete on the other side of the line of scrimmage is either your equal or better, whether you play defense or offense. Sometimes even excellent teams run into teams that are excellent also and are as well coached in the suggestions you make. Your suggestions are valid, but sometimes the result don’t show. They didn’t show for us yesterday for this very reason. We played a very talented, well coached team and it showed. However, we could have played a lot better than we did. The dropped passes, penalties, and poor execution sometimes were areas that can be improved.

What I love to haer are armchair QBs talking out of their but. CMR said himself they had to comb back the offense because the OL could not handle their DL. Watch the game, it’s true. Now look at the defense. With no pressure coming from the DL, they basicly had to play zone. There is no way the DBs could keep man coverage with all the time in the world to throw the football. On a side note, the LBs were not the only ones covering the TE. I saw #9 Jones get burnt twice covering him. That TE is a freaking beast; do you put a corner on him? no, to freaking small. It’s not like the TE had his way. Mo Brown did the damage against our secondary. What we got was a nasty football game. Typical of UGA/usc. The main thing that worries me is no pass rush from the DL. We can’t blitz every play. Do that against ASU, and Carpenter will kill us.

Get real. The season when South Carolina isn’t a “big hurdle” for UGA is when your program will have truly risen to a national title contender (like LSU. I realize the Dawgs don’t play in the Picnic 10, but the poll voters don’t care. Why do you think they keep putting USC at the top spot? This attitude of “just win and the rest will take care of itself” is delusional. At this point if UGA, Oklahoma, and USC win out, the Dawgs will watch the other 2 play for the national title just like Auburn got to watch these very same teams in 2004. And their chances of going undefeated sre substantially better than Georgia’s. I don’t particularly like it, but that’s how it will turn out.
UGA now needs to win decisively over a couple of highly ranked teams to get the voters’ attention. Squeaking by will not help.

It seems that the rating was way too high, I told that to my family but the blind loyalist they are they only see good in Red and Black. In my posting after the dawgs fell from 1 to 2 I stated that dawg fans should be more concerned of the play calling by Bobo and Martinez than where the dawgs are rated now, because if thay play to their capabilities, then all will be well in the end. Bobo and Martinez are imposters posing as OC and DC, and will continue to stoke our blood pressure. Marcus Howard is gone and none of the DE seem able to get to the QB, but Willie does nothing to apply some pressure on their QB. They beat our LB’s all day with their TE, but willie did nothing to counter that. Poor willie he does not have a clue. Despite everything I am happy for the win, it is still better than the alternative.

I read that CMR and CMB say AJ Green needs to get more touches, how about him been on the field more. I am sure he will be happy for that, and all dawg fans who sees his potential and ability displayed in his limited appearance wants to see him on the field more. Why are the best receivers not on the field more, and is not there another TE other than Tripp Chandler. Edwards may be the fastest RB on the roster, but it is evident that he is not ready, and should be used more on special team than getting playing time ahead of Caleb King.

We should be able to put at least 4 touchdowns on the ASU team and maybe a field goal or two. Rudy Carpenter is a concern. He could hurt us real bad if we don’t have enough pass rush and coverage. But I think we can hold them to three touchdowns, if not less.

As a lifelong Georgia resident (born in Athens) and UGA graduate, I have more connection to the state and university than PMR [Pimp Marc Richt] will ever have. He is overrated, and his bible-thumping is insufferable. Soon UGA’s football team will lose a game, and this will, in turn, put the quietus on the pick-up truck alumni and the genuine graduates regarding a “national championship.” The current team is nothing special, but it it is about what a lower institution like UGA deserves. I know this assertion is highly offensive to the red & black defenders, but, well, truth hurts, don’t it? I remember when I was a student, and they actually had the audacity and hubris to boast about adding the millionth item to the library. Columbia has 8 million. Well, give UGA 200 more years. I guess it’s consolation that PMR’s squad could annihilate Columbia’s.

Folks…I will take a win any day but there was a hard reality that came Saturday that we are not a top 8 team. No pressure on SC (one of the worst lines) means we will struggle with a good QB.

With running backs like Moreno & King, Stafford does not need to run the ball that many times. Maybe this was a wake-up call. Look for the dawgs to learn from this outing. Hey, we had an ugly win in 02 against Clemson early on. We won the SEC that year and was one play away from playing for the title. This year we have our most talented team since the Hershel years and get Southerland back very soon. He is a difference maker in our offense, both rushing and passing. It is good to get Chapas playing time experience, but he is not a top rated player like Brannan is. Plus, Battle will return to solidify our pass rush. Secondary is very seasoned and experienced and will get better as season progresses.

I believe if UGA can find a way to put more pressure on the opposing quarterbacks and refrain from goofy penalties we can play with any team in the country. Saturday was an “ugly” game and I know Oklahoma, Missouri and USC look like they are in a league of their own. However, before the season is out I believe 2 of those teams if not all 3 will meet their match. Show me a team in the last 10 years that hasn’t had a couple of “ugly” wins that went on to win it all. I do believe UGA should take full advantage of the best players on the team (more reps for Green more oppurtunities for Knowshon, etc.)

Mega Ugly. 1. If the quarterback and center don’t wear gloves, because they need all the ‘feel’ possible, why do tight ends and all pass receivers have to wear thick welding gloves? Its beyond me. It looks like the pass receivers have absolutly no feel whatever in their hands. 2. I saw disorganization in the coaches. 3. Why do we still get so many penalties? 4. Are our guys uncoachable? 5. Weakness in pass coverage was exposed in the first 2 games, and got worse against SC. Why is that? Somebody help me understand this mess…………….

I watched all of the inportant games this weekend. I called my OU buddy (I live in Dallas TX so I know a couple) after their game and told him they were #2. The season is filtering itself out. If we want to compete for it all, we have to make it through the wash. This is what we have always talked about. “We only get small moves in the polls after a big win.” You have to play the whole season. Now we have to prove that we are better than a very impressive group of teams. I only wish the rest of the SEC would do what we have done, elevate our conference to national attention by winning out of conference. I don’t want to win a Nat’l Championship when people can say “the level of competition was weak across the board.” I welcome the chance to fall back a bit and then do what we have been known to do. Rally through the end of the season. Believe me OU and USC will have theirs. They ALWAYS do. We just have to keep hanging around. Kind of like last year. Where did we end up? Hope for wins my friends, ugly or not, and pray for our players’ health. Oh…one more thing…Go Dawgs!

Yes, I was upset at the way UGA played USC. But I am also going to let tthe season play out and see what happens.I am not smart enough to do what they do. what I did see in looking at the standings is that of all the teams in the new top is that UGA is the only team that will play (5) teams in the top 25 with (3) of them in the top 10. The media darlings of the West coast will play (2) both out of the top 10. Oklahoma plays (3) one in the top 10.So lets see what happens come January.Until then GO DAWGS.

Forget all the naysayers, journalists, polls, fairweather fans, pundits, ESPN commentators; all we need to do is simply win, whether by 50 points or 1 point. That simple little term ‘all’ is difficult enough. We don’t even need to bother being the best team on the field on a given night if we can manage to benefit from just a little bit of luck. To heck with all the if’s and ain’ts, and cain’ts!!! The Negative Realities: 1. Georgia has experienced from fair to extremely poor coaching over the first three games with South Carolina being extremely poor.
Georgia players are not mentally in the ball games as evidenced by so many penalties.
Georgia’s Defensive Linemen appear to be either too lazy or too tired to lift their arms when the ball is thrown. Even if a pass is not blocked, an outstretched hand can hamper the perception and vision of the quarterback. Really great defenses do this with regularity.
Coach Richt attempts to play an inordinately large number of true freshman as opposed to playing the true freshmen that he really needs. He does not need to play Richard Samuel so much. It lessens the opportunities to play Knowshon Moreno who is far more likely to offensively accomplish what the gameplan should be. These players can just as easily be inserted into practice as games to acclimate them to Division-1 football.
We would greatly benefit by speeding up our offensive plays, perhaps even going to a no huddle. This would have really halped in the South Carolina game given the frequency of the Gamecock defensive substitutions.
We would improve pass protection for Matt Stafford by keeping some of our receivers home to assist. The 5 reciever sets that we use make pass protection very difficult for a young inexperienced offensive line.
The Georgia team would benefit by seeing a bit more emotion from their head coach. Stoicism is not a behavioral trait that makes for effective college football coaches, especially the head coach.
Trick plays are not to be overused, but inserting some risk into the offense wouldn’t hurt. We need to use them if for no other reason than to make the other team guess when they might be used. We have use very few, if any, thus far.
Using at least a modest number of screen passes is a good idea. It keeps the two safties from wondering too deep on every play. We haven’t been used it much, if at all, to much effect.
The kickers are going to have to kick the ball in the center of the field to avoid the automatic 40 yard placement. This can be improved. We also need to improve on kick-off coverage. It has not been particulary good even when the ball is fielded in bounds.
We need to improve on blitzing the QB. I noticed on a 3rd down and 7, we applied no pressure whatsoever on Smelley. The result is that he easily threw for a first down. Sometimes QBs can still make great throws even when blitzed, but not blitzing on an obvious passing down will certainly diminish a defense’s chance at thwarting a pass play.
Positive Reality:
Georgia has a very good football team; one that can become outstanding. It is up to the Georgia coaching staff to ensure that this happens. I believe it will.
