UGA blog finds new home

Morning all. As I’ve said a couple of times this week, we’re converting this blog over to a WordPress platform and it will be a permanent move the first of next week.

Those of you who are regulars probably know that I’m not what you’d call techno-wizard when it comes to these things. But from what I understand the technology offered in this new format should make the blogging and commenting experience better for all. Of course, I’ll be learning as we go along, too. But I’m hoping to provide more pictures and video and things like that which should bring the blog more to life.

Of course, this blog is nothing without all you guys so I want to heartily invite (read: beg) you to come over to the new site by CLICKING HERE ON THE NEW ADDRESS and save it in your browsers. As of Monday, Feb. 23rd, this will be the permanent home of the UGA blog you so love or, in the case of some of you, love to loathe. If you’d prefer to copy and paste or just memorize, the new address is: http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/.

See at the new place!

All signs point to close Georgia win

Well, there’s not much left to say about Saturday’s game between No. 2 Georgia and South Carolina other than “something has to give.” Georgia leads the SEC in scoring (50.5 ppg) and offense (543.5 ypg). The Gamecocks lead the SEC in total defense (181.5 ypg) and pass defense (69.5).

I’ve been going over to Williams-Brice Stadium for years and have seen all kinds of wild things there. My first trip ever was the time Georgia’s James Jackson dropped the ball on the turf on the game’s last playing thinking the game had ended while it was still a live ball. Then David Pollack makes the sack-and-swipe touchdown at 2002 that required seeing a slow-motion replay on television to tell what happened. Last time the Bulldogs were over there quarterbak Joe Tereshinski gets hurt on like the first series and true freshman Matt Stafford ends up playing and throwing three interceptions. Somehow the Dogs pulled out an 18-0 win.

So I expect it to be wild and wacky because it usually is. Georgia would appear to be the much better team but that’s usually the case and it never usually works out that way. So I’m thinking the Dogs by less than a touchdown in a fairly low-scoring game.

But that’s just me. Let’s hear your predictions.

Here’s some other stuff from around the league… .

S.C. beat guys pick Dogs

Nothing really unusual about that. But Joe Person and Seth Emerson are good friends and I had to give them a hard time about their video preview of Saturday’s game. So enjoy.

Security issues for star players

It hasn’t happened yet to Knowshon Moreno or Matthew Stafford, but it seems just a matter of time before opposing fans bomdard their cell phones with nasty text messages — or do something worse. Apparently that’s the new trend in college sports. Florida’s Tim Tebow has had it happen more than once and now requires extra security. Even South Florida’s Matt Grothe has had similar issues. Price of fame I guess.

Tigers settle on quarterback

Chris Todd’s performance for Auburn this past weekend pretty much closed the book on the quarterback competition with Kodi Burns but coach Tommy Tuberville explains how both could still play in Saturday’s game against Mississippi State.

How to win your next argument

The next time someone says “We should have won but…,” here’s a handy guide on how to turn that point around and impress your friends. You have to scroll about halfway down.

If we lose this game it will be our own doing. South Carolina is having problems at quarterback and has yet to show any kind of progress on offense. This heralded defense I keep hearing about, while I’m not saying they’re bad, they DID let Vandy hang 24 on them. The only other team they’ve played this year? Powerhouse NC State…

This all looks good for us on paper but in the world of college football, that only means so much. There is an outside chance SC could pull an upset but I think if we show up to play it could get pretty ugly for the hens.

45-17 Dawgs. Not too close. I may fall asleep in the fourth quarter.

Going to take my disabled daughter Baylie to have dinner with the UGA cheerleaders tonight if she feels up to it. Of course I will take a camera for the friends of mine on the blog.

Hey, sport you better check out what USC did statistically. Two interceptions, a blocked kick, and a botched special teams play lost that game for SC. Vandy’s offense didn’t do much but they had a short field on almost all of their scores. That’s a fact, jack.

So SC is prone to handing the game over to the opposition? Great make it easy for the Dawgs!

Also if the defense was not #1 statistically overrall after playing NC State and Vandy, returning 12 starters (Brinkly) then you would have a bigger story! The UGA offense will dominate on Saturday!

You are right, Georgia is the most talented team, but that hasn’t always mattered. I have been to three or four games in Columbia, and UGA has won only one despite being the heavy favorite in each one of them. Martinez better play more than a “vanilla” defense for this one; if they give up 20 points again, we go home with a loss. Offensively we have to execute. All those weapons, but you still have to execute.

I seem to remember all the predictions last year before the game.

Then you failed to score a TD and got beat in your own house. Pathetic.

After the loss, most of this blog called for offensive and defensive coordinators to be fired. Most wanted to bench the chubby qb.. Moreno was MIA. Fun times.

I’m ready to see what our defense does to your heisman hack of a rb.

You better grab another keg Matthew, it’s going to be a long weekend.

Sorry, Poults, this ain’t our fathers’ Dawgs. Yeah, this game has been close. Yeah, the EG can still coach, but you still can’t make chicken salad without the meat. Too much fire + too much power = a lot of squawking. This game breaks the mold. No more playing down to the level of the opposition. The Dawgs will NOT be looking ahead. This game is big only because it’s the next one. These two programs are headed in opposite directions and the gap is already too large. If my math works, the SC defense has giving up an average of 120 YPG on the ground to Vandy and NC State. Vandy’s best weapons are passing weapons and NC State, well, enough said. The Dawgs run for 250+ and the game, for the first time in a long time, is not close. Dawgs win 37-10, unless the third D gives up more late. And yes, they EARN it!

Chip, I do agree that strange things happen when UGA meets SC, however; UGA has to much fire power and SC to little. When the genius is so desperately looking for playmakers and answers in freshmen WR’s and RB’s along with an unproven QB, it is BAD. SC may match up physically with GA on the lines and overall defense, but GA will pull away in a decisive manner, (to much offense) with a good defense; this will be to much for SC to over come.UM vs FL is a good example.

There are no indications that the Dawgs will underestimate the Cocks and the confidence level for SC has to be low if not tried to this point. If SC scores first Stafford may be fighting back some kind of repeat syndrome but the talent around him should pull the him through. If the Dawgs draw first blood the most fun place on the field will be in the booth with Mike Bobo or in the huddle for UGA. If the Cocks don’t rise to the occasion early the Dawgs will skip foreplay and create UGAliness. At that point it’s no longer a spectator sport but a witness to a crime scene on our part.Go Dawgs!

GAMECOCK CHRISSY, got some news for ya Knowshon is a little better than #31 for Vandy. South Carolina hasn’t seen a real QB yet either. Nickson is mediocre and that NC St. game would have been a lot different if their starter QB hadn’t been carried off. South Carolina is a disaster on offense right now. Don’t see them scoring many points or the Dawgs O being held in check. Good luck you guys are going to need it. The series will be 45-14-4 on Sun. Go Dawgs!

Under Richt, UGA has always been the most talented team, but the sense of entitlement has worked against them. It is sad that players from any team have to worry about their own safety. Someone needs to track down the author of cowardly and unsportsmanlike email and phone calls and prosecute them. Richt certainly fanned these fires last year, but it seems that he may have learned a lesson about game behavior.

Chip, I hate to do it, but I’m going to disagree with you wholeheartedly, 100%. If your prediction comes true, I’m going to be pi$$ed. All things considered, we should win this one fairly easily. They do have a nice defense, so I expect a few 3 and outs while Bobo figures it out. Then we open it up and score pretty much at will. Here is my prediction by end of each quarter:

1st: 7-0 Dawgs 2nd: 17-3 Dawgs 3rd: 31-10 Dawgs 4th: 37-17 Dawgs

I wish I were as confident in a Dawgs win as most of you are. However, I have seen too many unexplainable things happen at WB…2000(supposed to be a NC run) and 2002 (by far the best team in SEC and couldnt score) are just two recent examples. That place does strange things to the team. Add SOS to the mix and it is way more unpredictable.

I think it will be closer than the experts think…but then again, I thought Rutgers could beat UNC!!

I don’t think it will be that close this year. I believe Richt learned last year what happens if you abandon the run. By running more the play action passing game will be better.

I believe South Carolina will not be able to run the ball and turnovers by South Carolina will be a factor.

The DAWGS are going to run the football (Moreno/Samuels/King). The DAWGS are going to stop the run(deep rotation of good DTs and good LBs). We will control the ball and control the time of possession. Occasionally we will throw deep to keep ‘em honest (Stafford/Massaquoi/Green). We will play error free on special teams.

The DAWGS will make your QB cry and the Ol’ Ball Sac throw and stomp his visor and yell at his son (he might just throw somebody under the bus).

The DAWGS are at the top of this peckin’ order. Higher in the food chain. The COCKS are gonna get picked clean.

The DAWGS are gonna punch ‘em in the mouth and steal their lunch money. We are going to knock the bejezus out of you and watch the snot bubbles fly. By the fourth quarter the chickens are going to be eating dirt.

Although I would dance with glee if we hang half a hundred on little Stevie, I think it will be more along the lines of 38-13.

If Georgia comes out and matches SC’s intensity, which they did not do last year, they will be fine.

The SC defense will be amped up to start and may force the offense to punt the first few series, but there will be no need for panic. Stay the course. Execute the gameplan. Keep pounding on them. The SC defense will wear down.

I do expect Spurrier to have some things “up his sleeve”. South Carolina may even pull off a couple of big pass plays. But again, no need for panic. Its a 60 minute game. Man up and stop the run and everything will be alright.

This may very well be a close game as most non-UGA fans seem to predict, but it could just as easily be a blowout in Georgia’s favor in my opinion. Spurrier will be taking some risks and if those risks don’t work this could get ugly in a hurry.

Richt was too sentimental in using Thomas Brown as the starter and giving him more playing time than Morino. I wonder if we would have beaten Florida and finished with 7 wins had Brown not been injured? I know Richt became a father figure to Brown, but his one weakness as a coach is putting seniority and sentimentality before objective judgment of what is best for his team at times.

Well first of all, tell your gal crissy, if she wants to come into a UGA blog and talk trash she needs to get ready for a rebutal. Otherwise she is welcome to stay away. But I agree with her, I cant wait to see what that 57th ranked rush defense can do against the second leading scorer in the country.

Secondly, not going to be a close game.

And for pete sake, you SC fans bragging how we didnt a TD, but selectively forget you didn’t score a point last time in “your house”…as if any of that matters now… We were “lucky” to beat Vandy, But no luck played into the SC win in Athens….Protected that house great last week did ya?

BTW, if you looked up “insecure” I’m sure there would be a picture of somebody trolling in an upcoming opponent’s blog.

CockBoy you are delusional. Do you really want to go back to last year? I mean yes Carolina barley beat UGA that is true. Which direction did the teams go frome there? This team’s offense is running much better than last years and I think any three of UGA’s backs are better than what the GameFlops have. I expect to see total domination. UGA is going to put an end to your silly SEC East hopes on Saturday. But you still have a chance for bragging rights with Clemson so all is not totaly lost.

I’m tired of hearing about Spurrier. He left his coaching abilities in Gainesville for some reason. I think the stint with the Redskins robbed him of his aura.

The fact is, South Carolina brings their best against Georgia. We usually win, but barely. Sometimes they win, barely. Spurrier hasn’t changed a thing in this series. I’ve seen a dozen Ga.-S.C. games that look like last year’s game.

Georgia should win, but then again we should have won last year. If we are a national championship caliber team, now’s the chance to step up and prove it.

Whatever “tricks” spurrier might have will not be anything like he’s had before. He’s typically saved some surprised for good teams, but short of Garcia coming in to the game (which isn’t really a surprise) he’s got nothing that he wouldn’t have pulled out to use against Vandy to win that game. It will be relatively close, but the Dawgs should take care of business.

Darius Dewberry is going to vandalize South Carolina. I look forward to seeing the Moreno/Stafford/Massaquoi/A.J. Green show. Oh, and Moreno will have two spin moves, a hurdle, and two stiffarms, will score 2 + touchdowns (one a Herschel leap over the line into the endzone) and will get 3 seconds on ESPN while ESPN argues for 30 minutes about a Southern Cal - Ohio State rematch because it’s just not fair because Beanie was injured. I actually laughed out loud Thursday night. ESPN bozos are attempting to ballyhoo the USC-Ohio State showdown as the clash of the century. How truly sad! Is USC good. Yes. Is Ohio State good? Highly debatable! All announcers agreed that if Ohio State wins it should vault five spaces all the way to No. 1. What about three teams (not acounting No. 1 USC) above the Sickeyes? Makes no difference to these biased scumbuckets! Ohio State is terribly overrated. I just wish they played someone besides techical colleges after the Saturday clash. So what if they run the table after USC? Vanderbilt would STILL be able to clean their clock! So, beloved Dawgs, one loss offers barest of outside BCS opportunity. Two or more losses means wait until next year for BCS spot. Just drop the SEC bouts next season to face ACC and Big 12 squads. That will show USC and Ohio State!

“Richt was too sentimental in using Thomas Brown as the starter and giving him more playing time than Morino. I wonder if we would have beaten Florida and finished with 7 wins had Brown not been injured? I know Richt became a father figure to Brown, but his one weakness as a coach is putting seniority and sentimentality before objective judgment of what is best for his team at times.”

Uh, Moreno actually got more carries than Brown last year against USC Captain Clueless. If you’re going to criticize someone else’s “objective judgment” it might help to get your own ducks in a row first.

Gamecock Fans,

I’ve always had alot of respect for you guys because you never fail to support your team no matter how bad your season is.

The dismal performance The Gamecocks displayed against Vandy is all the proof you need that Spurrier is just exactly what most of you are thinking - washed up. Your team has little depth. Spurrier cannot recruit anymore.

I believe you’ll run him out of Columbia on a rail at the end of this season.

By the way GamecockSEChamps - you actually have to WIN SEC Games to become SEC Champs. You’re 0 - 1 and about to be 0 -2 in the conference.

Not sure if the dawg nation will be able to handle the loss! There will be cry babies everywhere on Sunday. It will be hard to miss one! THE Ohio State Buckeyes

I have to go with FLA DAWG and the others on this one. USC will crush your buckeyes; USC 41 OSU 10. I think UGA vs usc will be closer, due to the rivalry, usc will play above themselves. GamecockSEChamps, fair is fair my friend and I agree you have the bragging rights till tomorrow afternoon that is just the way it goes. That game last year cost us the chance to play for the SEC title and possibly the NC. It hurt when it happened and it hurt even more when our season ended like it did and everybody realized it that all we had to do was beat SC like we do many occassions. Did we know that your 6-1 season and #6 ranking would turn into what it did? I sure as heck didn’t and I am sure that you didn’t either. Another difference this year is that the team has been playing on a different level that carried over from last year. Our first two games were just a warm up, stay healthy, and work out the kinks. Can’t wait till tomorrow. And if you guys win again (stranger things have happened right? SOS two straight loses to the Commodores) then God help our souls to deal with it.

gdawginkalamazoo, honestly though… I agree with you. I’m afraid that there’s just too much firepower in the visiting sideline this year. I’m going to the game tomorrow, but I’m hoping for a close game… sad when we have to hope for a close game… I do want also mention on a better note that the Gamecocks have been without their starting LT (who is returning tomorrow), Frosh RB Eric Baker from Jacksonville and Soph Brian Maddox from Anderson, SC will be sharing carries with Davis (no more Rank), and it is possible that McKinley will come back. Another difference that UGA fans do overlook is the fact that we have a new D Coordinator who is much better than Tyrone Nix… All that said, it’s just enought to fall short of a victory against a better opponent. Just wanted to be the informant as UGA fans tend to only pay attention to what has changed on one side of the field…

PACWIN, we should have seen that game last year in the Rose Bowl. However, it would be even better this year for all the marbles not just bragging rights. Let’s hope we both make it throught the season unscaithed and healthy. I also believe that USC will beat the Buckeyes in SEC fashion.

Statistically?? Yeah great job. Check this statistic: 0-2 against Vandy the last two years. Damn that’s gotta hurt, I don’t care who you are. This will be an easy game. Uncharacteristic, i know, but the Dawgs are up by 14 at the half and end up winning 44 to 17.

Spurrier still sucks and it is too bad for the Chickens that they have to be hated by the rest of the conference because of their coach. I think Spurrier peaked as a coach at Duke and then had the players at Florida, but he has neither innovative coaching or the position players to do anything in South Carolina. Are you “Gaycocks” tired of being “Dominated” by the big, bad Georgia Bulldogs…Tired of being “Spanked around” by all those mean SEC teams..Come to my place, Esmerelda’s of Spring and College. See my girls, Heather in Leather, and her bratty sister, “The Whippersnapper”, they will spank, yank and tied you down..and you will “Love It”..Come see me, and I will show you how being Dominated can really be Fun.

Now boots, I’ve got to draw the line on that one. I may be the last Gamecock fan to defend Spurrier, but his innovative coaching is the only reason USC has not gone back in the tubes (remember 1-21, not too long ago) Lou used Juco guys and recruits other teams would pass on who were talented but had questionable character issue. He hasn’t had a quarterback, an o-line, or the receivers to effectively run his offense (see Rich Rodriguez in 2008). The guy unveils a new offense every week, he has in with and beaten many teams in the SEC since he’s been back with USC. Now, his ablility to recruit at South Carolina has been bad and his teams’ discipline has been poor (on the field and off) Richt has had some issues with discipline as well. Do not question his playcalling or Xs and Os. As a student of the game, I can see that is still there (don’t believe everything these guys write). If Steve were at a better program or had better offensive personnel, then his Fun & Gun would still be effective. You can quote me on that one.

Red Roosterette- that’s the difference between an average program and an elite program. We expect to compete for NC and will take BCS bowl games as a consolation prize. You expect 8-4 seasons and will take any bowl you can invited to. Way to “keep your eye on the prize”!!!

AltamahaDawg, not really. You pointing out that someone is has no substance by pointing out typos puts you on their level. I just like picking on Georgia fans that refer to their team as the “Dawgs” because it’s hilarious to me (I grew up in south Georgia and some down there would argue that it really is an alternate spelling of the word). I mean, there are 1st graders that mispell the word for real. C’mon! Catch that bawl Green!

No, I didn’t say that he had no substance BECAUSE he can find typos. What I said is that he addressed the typos RATHER than my very specific points. It’s a pretty old trick. Kind of like intentionally twisting somebodies words, or rediculously pretending not to “get” something.

Dawgs are so overrated it is ridiculous. You’ve played to patsies, proving only that the bully can beat the little kids at the playground.

Your defense is highly questionable. GSU scored on your D without any problem. Call it your 2nd and third string, but these guys are 4-star recruits. Whatever. Excuses, won’t win against SEC offenses.

Your offense has been able to put up those big numbers with no pressure. Wait until Spurrier (and better SEC defenses) throws unrelenstless blitzes at Stafford and stuffs Moreno in the box. AJ Green will get picked right in front of the fans he screwed over.

Picture this: Stafford and Moreno sitting on the bench with their heads down, when time is running out and the score is:

This game boils down to an intense rivalry between two teams that have a lot of reason to be motivated going in. SC just lost to Vandy and most likely spent this week pulling a visor out of the collective arses. I’m sure they have been thoroughly worked into a frenzy by the ol’ ball coach. On the other hand, we all know what last year’s loss to SC cost UGA - a shot at the SEC title and possible the National Championship. We know it and the players know it. I imagine they will be more focused on this game than any game since that loss. The fact is that on paper UGA is a far superior team here, but funny things always seem to happen in this matchup. My guess would be UGA by 3 tds, but you never know when these two teams collide.

Lesson to enemey bloggers, you mess around in this Junkyard, your’e gonna get bit.

USC east goes down hard at the Fairgrounds. Chickens will get plucked. Feathers will fly and their will be yardbird on the table by dinner.

I warned many last year that USC was coming to play at Sanford and most thought I had lost my mind. USC played to win in 2007 and got the victory. This year the Dawgs are coming to Brice with one thing on their minds, PAIN!. We will blitz the USC offense faster than Rommel through France in 1940. And the dynamic duo of Moreno and King will rack up the yards faster than you can say cockaboose.

I agree with Elvis when he said that Williams Brice does strange things to people. Just look at Lou Holtz - A legend in his own mind. Got to SC and forgot how to coach. He still gave a heck of a motivational talk, but couldn’t coach.

Now, Look at Spurrier. He has done a great job recruiting and keeping a lot of the instate blue chippers, but all he wants to do is play golf. He has forgotten HOW to coach! Who loses their final 6 games of the season ….A man who can’t coach.

Game-for C** Chrissy will be needing some c** by tomorrow night when she wants to forget the drubbing the Dawgs put on her Little Red Cocks.

If Andrew Pinnock had not muffed a toss dive 4 yrs ago from the 2ft line with about one minute to go with a hole in front of him big enough for ME to run through untouched, no one would have even cared about the Pollock strip for the TD. As CMR said, last year, a motion penalty blew a muffed punt which would have given the Dawgs the ball deep in SC territory, but no deal.

Check the history, boys and girls, this one has been close for years. “LAY DOWN, you guys, LAY DOWN! Tannyhill, gonna give the ball to Bennett, and he SCORES on the last play of the game! Brandon Bennett, a great athlete, LEAPED over the pile and broke our hearts with two seconds to go!

I think it goes 21-18 today, just now sure which way, but maybe it’s us again. For now, we’re still up 16-12! Go Gamecocks!

Cuz, thanks for the picture, take care of that sweet little girl. Chip, thanks for the links. The question of security has bothered Me since the Jax player was shot. I know coaches talk to the players about the dangers out there, but yet We have two players hit with bottles in a barroom brawl. A bottle is bad enough, thank God it wasn’t a gun or knife. I hope those guys realize how lucky they are. A high profile athlete must be very careful, some people will harm Him just for the publicity, or just for “street creds”. We can’t have a cop following every player around so the individual athletes must assume some responsability for themselves. One basic rule, nothing good for Your future career is going to happen in a bar, especially after midnight!

Why is that they don’t want to press charges ?

Because they don’t want you to know that as they hit CC Whitlock repeatedly yesterday at the lunch table that they yelled What’s up Red.

It was a retaliation gang war between The Reds, who started it, and The Bloods who came in for revenge at the South Carolina Football Players’ Lunch Table to specifically beat up, which they did, CC Whitlock South Carolina freshman football player, who is a member of The Reds.

There was a lot of vitriol, and no Gamehens that is not an aftershave, thrown at ESPN this week by Georgia fans, coaches and players who thought we were dissed by ESPN last weekend. I just think they got the message. I don’t fear the Courso factor today, he did not put on a Dawg mask so we should be safe. Here is hoping when they do gameday from Sanford for either Bama or UT he picks the Elephant head or the Coonskin cap.

NOW GO DAWGS, EARN IT, PROVE IT, TAKE IT!

Hey Cuz, I too googled Baylie a couple nights ago…what an incredible little girl. I can only imagine how much strength you get from her. Glad it went well last night! I’ve struggled most of my life with an affliction that has no cure…I can relate. Y’all are in my prayers.

GO DAWGS!

Ms. Commodore, I was unaware bluebloods of your kind even have a website. I guess the poser who wants to be me, went to your site also. Seriously, there is actually a Vandy web site? Why?

Bless you Tybee. I have my own medical problems that will follow me the rest of my life. I got the handicap tag for Baylie but now I can honestly use it myself. I know the feeling. Baylie has been an inspiration to me and has made me a better father and a better human being.

THE Ohio State Buckeyes

I have to go with FLA DAWG and the others on this one. USC will crush your buckeyes; USC 41 OSU 10. I think UGA vs usc will be closer, due to the rivalry, usc will play above themselves. It could be as close as UGA 21 usc 17; more likely 28-17 with UGA winning. I will continue following UGA as long as they are the likely victim for USC in the BCS. I would love to see that game. Good luck Dawgs.

I NAILED IT

If you play the way you played Saturday you won’t make the show. Step up your game.
